Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a vast amount of allies and friends, and defeated every threat to Tianna up to now.

Hesitatingly, she picks you up, spreads her wings, and takes flight.

It's quite hard to keep faith to your promise: the temptation is great. But, you steel your will and carry on, and she floes you over the mountains without a hitch.

Seeing her white veil fluttering in the breeze, and with still the memories of your shopping trip in your mind, your curiosity slowly grows. You know she doesn't talk much about her past, but...

"Say, Tia. Did you always wear this wedding dress because..."

"Because I wanted to marry you." She replies.

"Will you keep it even after the ceremony?" You wonder.

"Well, we will still be married. So yes."

Tia's logic is a wonderful thing.

"Where I was first." She replies, looking distant for a moment. The strange wording strikes you. Not "before", but "first"? "Halta." She adds.

She already mentioned Halta as her birthplace (of sorts?) once, but it's a remote country you know basically nothing about. But her answers are getting shorter and snappier and more nervous.

She never liked talking about her past, and this isn't changing now.

"Silver Pact?" That sounds interesting. "Did you have a mentor? A teacher?"

She frowns. "Fragrance."

"How was she?" You're getting somewhere, finally.

"Ever heard the story that lions throw their cubs off cliffs so only the strong survive?"

"Yes." Oh, one of those.

"Like that but worse." She replies. "Threw me in the Pure Chaos at the end of the Wyld once."

"...Isn't that... incredibly harmful and dangerous even for an Exalted?"

She nods. "Removed all my arms and legs before throwing me in." She adds, making a cutting motion with a hand. "regrowing them before reality failed was part of the test."

"...Are you sure she didn't want to kill you?" You have to doubt.

"Wanted me to grow up strong. As strong as her." She mutters. "Still working on that."

You're not sure how to reply to that. That sounded downright abusive, but in her voice you feel nothing but respect for this Fragrance person.

"What happened then?"

"Ma-Ha-Suchi happened." She snarls angrily. "He challenged her. She lost."

"Why?" The plot thickens.

"Ritual combat. You defeat a Silver Pact Lunar, spare his life, can ask him for something. He asked for me. Fragrance had to give me to him."

You'd argue the merits of Tia's "sanity" in other circumstances, but for now, you'll pass. By "bond" she probably means the pull Lunars apparently feel towards their Solar mate. Hearing what other Lunars had to say, seems like it's something they all experience with varying degrees of intensity, and Tia just happens to have an extremely strong one.

"I broke a lot of things." She nods. "Ran away. Someone helped me. Hid me, gave me food, a place to rest and heal. Gave me the dress as a parting gift. Said that I'd find you here in Tianna."

With the Dark Omen wreck we got from the Abyssals, the various warships from the Silver Prince, and the Titan Val is already on her way to learning how to make and build one on her own, she's the one who suggested the airship back when we talked about it.

The flight turns to uneasy silence for a while as you leave Tia some time to recover and think about it. You arrive at Pearl in the early morning to find it already abuzz with activity.

Your mate swoops down and flies straight through a, thankfully open, window in the massive walls of Golden Reach. The inside of the fortress is still for the most part barren and unfurnished.

You crack your neck and stretch a bit after Tia sets you down. "Alright. Time to get back to work."

Once you settle in and take care of formalities (checking the situation and making sure everything's under control, hearing reports, etc) you head to Lynne's room.

(In the meanwhile Tia has offered herself to help with the work crews. By now they know her, and she gets a cheerful welcome.)

The door to his room is half-open, and you see him sleeping inside, in his smaller form. Sleeping quite soundly.

His "room", to be honest, might be one of the guest rooms of the Manse, but that's just by design: right now, with no furniture, all he has is a mattress and a cloth bag thrown in a corner of an impressively large yet empty hall lit by white crystals set in the walls.
Properly arranged and decorated, this room, like most in the Manse, would be quite luxurious. Like this, it's just empty. Your steps, and his snoring, echo loudly from wall to wall.

As soon as you make more than a bit noise, however, he's startled awake, and you see for a moment his castemark flickering and his body shivering as if on the verge of a change for a second. "WHA- oh. It... it's you." He yawns. "...Sorry. Had to stay on my guard at all times when i was in Skullstone. Trying to lose the habit." He stretches. "It's been... years since I could have a restful sleep without watching my back."

"Must've been rough." You sit down next to him.

After wandering about inspecting the fortress for a while, you ask around a bit for the whereabouts of your two servants and then head to the kitchens to meet them.

There, you find Regis in front of the fire, a large frying pan in hand filled with... minced pork, spices, chopped onions and olive oil by the smell of it, in hand, and Millian next to him with a wooden ladle in hand, clearly threatening to bop him upside the head with it.

Much to your surprise, Pyre Spark is there too, sitting at the nearby table (one of the few pieces of furniture in the manse right now) with fork and knife in hand, clearly eager.

"Not so far from the fire! Don't be afraid, damnit. The pan isn't going to get hurt- oh." They both turn around as you enter.

"I'm back home."

"Lady Maka!"

"DIVINE MAKA!"

"Regis! You're spilling the oil!" *whack*

Once the panic has cleared a bit, they welcome you properly. "How are things going, Lady Maka?" The little maid asks, setting up the table.

"Busy, but not frenetic anymore." You sit down as Regis lays out on a large plate his fried bits of spiced pork with onions. The smell is really inviting, and you try one.

"Wow, you're getting really good." You have to give it to him. "Someday you might even be as good as Millian."

"Hah. As if." The maid replies haughtily, hands on hips. "It's a long way to the top if you want to cook like a pro."

"Sorry if I've been jumping around back and forth between Pearl and Tianna." You tell them.

It takes quite a while for Millian's snark and Pyre's silly determination to simmer down, both tempered by Regis' presence as the only sane man in the entire kitchen.

It's a useful lesson for you, too, Since Exalting, you've been taking your body and health for granted, but Pyre has reminded you that that's no reason to stop caring for your own well-being.

And it turns out that properly prepared southern-style seasoned marble lard with oven-baked potatoes, parsley, finely chopped spring onions and a sprinkle of salt is amazing. You're nearly in tears.
You almost forgot how good a large, hearty meal can be when it hits the sweet spot.

Millian and Regis are basically the best servants that a Solar Queen could have.

Just the right level of loyalty balanced with snark, no meaningless platitudes, and they seem to be able to keep Maka mostly on target even when she is in vapid whore mode.
