The large black tower surrounded with writhing tendrils of pure darkened energy outlined your slow pace. You hold your sword in one bloodstained hand, pointed to the side the sheen-less metal, chipped and near broken dripped the steaming and slowly evaporating ooze of demon innards.

The surrounding ground is beaten, burning and littered with the same steaming gunk. Each one had fallen to your blade, each life even if corrupted you had taken. All that remains is the tower and the ending to your unwritten contract.

Your eyes move over the battlefield while your hands search for a cloth, you turn your sword over, cleaning it as best you can.

'No movement, good.'

You sigh, checking the blade that you hold.

Non-magical in every respect, the blade is made of impure iron and forged by a competent blacksmith. The best blade you have ever used, perfectly balanced for your style of fighting. A lucky find and you knew it well. A small smirk curled across your lips.

"Now then... Not the place for a tankard of ale? Water? No?..." You sigh from the excursion glancing around for the chance that a demon carried some water. No luck. Wiping your brow you head towards the tower.

Huge black wooden doors greet you, opening wide to your presence, allowing you passage. At least there's theatrics, wouldn't be right without those.

You continue down the blackened hallways, everything here seems so morbid and empty. Probably because you've slaughtered all of the occupants who had charged out, seeking to end you. You shrug then smirk. Fighting a horde was much easier than expected. The countless blessings enriching your body does wonders for ones fighting capability.

Open rooms pass by you, tables and chairs tossed and turned. Though honestly is that really a table? It has hollowed bones on it, they seemingly resemble cups, though the 'table' is just a massive skull. Demons built the castle?

You shake your head, throwing the thought away. Soon you reach a hall that has nothing but mirrors on the walls. Who in the world designed this place? Nether the less you continue forward, glancing to yourself every so often. You are...

You eye yourself, still as normal as ever hell, you've always looked like the average stable boy. A little muscle but still somehow scrawny. The blessings didn't do anything for your looks that's for sure. Still other people underestimate you for the most part. So it works out.

Continuing walking in this endless castle of hallways, you start slouching as you move, one hand in your leather pocket while the other keeps a firm hold of the sword. Two weeks of fighting has got you here. It's been slaughter after slaughter. You've lost count of how many demons you've felled, or how many people you've saved. Hell you feel like you'd rather be back at the city, going from backstreet to backstreet.

That isn't an option now however, having accepted the first blessing a contract had been arranged, without your consent. The demon lord must fall and by your blade have its head removed. The fact that you can't wield magical items was a problem at first, though with the blessings it doesn't come to light now. You swing your sword and they fall.

This hallway ends, in a large black ivory door. It's closed but you feel the darkness behind it. The demon lord must be there. Your grip tightens on the swords grip.

Walking down the final stretch of blackened marble seems to weigh you down. It's annoying for sure. You believe it's some kind of presence of the demon lord. Though quickly it vanishes as each footstep you take, you silently prey. Resounding command words inside your head, blessings being intertwined upon one another. Your body now lighter than before and much much stronger is ready for a real fight.

You grit your teeth, five feet away from the large door before it slowly opens into the next room. A huge floor the size of four imperial courtrooms meets your eyes, pillars perhaps a hundred feet tall reach up to support the ceiling. Black marble, turned white at the thresh hold of the door leads up to what you see as a throne. There, a female sits. Armored with what appears to be a kind of scale mail. Only the head remains unprotected, horns grow from her head.

You give the slightest of pauses, you see from this distance her head cocks to the side.

"Hero! Protector of humans, slayer of demons. Welcome to my sanctuary!"

You take a step forward, unsure whether to sprint forward or not. Her voice is echoing across the chamber, resounding on the pillars before turning upon itself and traveling further. Very. VERY, theatrical.

"Come to slay the last? To vanquish evil and finish the story? You would not be able to fight against me hero. You will fall to my-"

"-magical might. What you have hero is a stick of iron and your borrowed power. I have worked my entire existence to bring my kind to a greater place in this world! You pathetic humans who do nothing but scrounge and scrape in the dirt, dare to stand within our way. The only reason you live is because of that borrowed power."

The demon lord stands up, looking to you as you stay still, waiting for her to continue. She appeared to have expected you to do something while she spoke, she looks somewhat confused.

"You believe yourself strong? Powerful... I shall give you a demonstration of power shall I?"

Her hands raise and begin moving in quick and precise gestures, faint blue arcane energy flicks around them. That, is not good. At all.

With snapshot thinking you direct the blessed energy into your legs, strengthening them to near breaking point only to release the energy in one huge leap. You can hear the cracking from behind you and the expression crossing the demons face sure means you made one hell of an impression. She seemed frozen before her hands snapped forward, aiming directly at your incoming face. However, like a fury filled starving seagull after food you attack without mercy. Smacking her hands towards the ceiling while your body shoulder bashes her back against her throne. Magical energy blasts upwards in a whirlwind of discharged mana, fire and pure force.

You hear a sickening crack of the demon lords head against the throne. She's awake, sitting and looking at you with pure hatred while you right yourself in front of her.

You stare at her before wryly smirking. "Once i've killed you, the rest of your race is next. On that point. You have my word."

She stares at you, jaw slack before she retorts in fury "D... Damned human!"

You start to pause to think about the choice of words she spoke, though the thought quickly vanishes as the snapping sound of claws ripping through both flesh and metal stir you. It seems her own bones have grown a new weapon.

The clawed hand attempts to strike at your stomach. However your speeds are much faster than hers. You don't know if it's the blessings or the adrenaline you feel pumping in your system but it does feel very good to be standing above the one who ordered the butchering of whole towns. You can't help but let a small smirk cross your lips as your sword takes off her claws. Flipping the blade around you position it against her chest not allowing her any space to move.

"You might want to keep seated. The show is just beginning you know!"

Her eyes narrow at you, then she snarls. The beautiful human visage is quickly wiped away as black sharpened teeth are shown, hissing soon following.

"Does the hero think he's won? No. You've lost human! You just don't know it yet!"

Her hands coil into fists, one gripping the arm of the stone throne. Cracking sounds, the chairs arm rather crushed from her bottled up anger.

You stare at her for a few moments only to grit your teeth and ready yourself. Using the higher blessings you start employing an incredible force forward, the blade cracking against the scale mail. It chipped before snapping. However this only caused the rest of the broken blade to slam down against her. Her eyes widen as her snarl turns to shock. Gauntlet hands swiftly moving to grip the blade in an attempt to remove it before it goes further. This however did nothing as the armor started to snap and chip from the sheer force. You give a grunt before smiling.

"What does fear taste like, demon? I hope you can see into the heart of this matter. Mhh?"

This seemed to not reach her as all of her attention was focused on stopping the blade, her gauntlets appeared to have faltered from the pressure, leaving warm steaming demon blood sliding down the edge of the blade. The contest continued in strained silence before finally a sickening crunch echoed around the throne room. Her armor had finally given in, her chest filled with iron. Wided eyed a low groan escaped her lips.

"Hu...an... scum.. St... ry, 'old... Azarn... A....rn"

You watch her twitch, more blood flowing off from the throne. Her life draining on your now broken sword.

"I really do hope you realize you're mi'stake'n with your views on humanity."

...

"No?"

....

"Damn."

You grip the hilt of your broken blade, removing it from her body. It jolts slightly before turning limp again. You look down at the steaming blood. Not a very clean kill, then again none of them are clean kills. Still you would have thought that the demon lord would have given you more trouble. With a sigh you shrug it off. Turning around and heading back out towards the doorway.

Two weeks has taken you from scurrying around a city into the heart of the demon land, only to slay the biggest threat to the whole human race. The blessings granted by countless beings of good will, or so has been said of them. Glancing around this huge room you spot a side door, left of the throne by perhaps three-hundred feet. The door you entered upon is still open however.

You pause looking between them only to feel your higher blessings snap violently from your body, leaving you rather weak at the knees. You curse under your breath. Normally they fade once danger has passed, not twang off. You shake your head grumbling.

After taking a moment to collect yourself for the blessings strange backlash you head to the offset door. Easily opening it and entering through. Another hallway greets you and you curse at the sadistic architect that designed this place. However this hall seems to be both smaller and shorter than the rest. Very few doors are there rather the only direction of note is up the stairs at the end of the walk.

You head up them, huffing to yourself with every step. Even if climbing stairs wasn't exhausting due to the blessings, the thought of climbing was certainly mentally tiring. A few hundred stairs later you reach the top. Here is seemingly an observation room for the front of the tower. Magically enchanted material allowing you to look out upon the wasteland, and the steaming bodies below. You don't recall a huge hole in the tower before so it's a good guess.

Several comfortable seats sit across the room, all looking out. A small... kitchen is off to the side with a pan bubbling with water inside of it. Between two chairs is a chessboard half way through a game. Black winning by a clear margin. Scattered across the room are clothing of different fabrics, all dark. You try to mentally block it out but yes, underwear, female underwear is included in this collection. At least you know that demons don't go commando.

You look around the room, thrice to triple check only to slowly lower your head into your hands and rub it. Attempting to wake up. It doesn't work, rather your face feels itchy now and you sneeze twice. You pick yourself up before entering the small kitchen. It's black like everything else, other than the white stitched kitten mug mittens that cover every cup you can see. You shake your head before checking on the pan. It's boiling an egg and what looks like a small sundial points to the twelve. Probably some kind of magical device so you leave it alone.

You take the pan from the heat allowing the bubbling water to settle down. The egg appears to be a normal egg, one you'd get off any good goose. To the side of the heated stove, probably magical since the damn stone is glowing red. Is a plate with what looks to be toast, cut into thin long strips. It also seems to have butter on, albeit cold. You do however also spot some mulled wine bottles in one cupboard so you pour the water into the basin looking thing that swallows it up then replace it with wine.

The egg you put on the toast still with its shell on. You're not sure you want to eat those things... though it is food. Right now you focus on placing the pan onto the red stone and wait until the wine is heated enough. Then take one of the kitten cups and fill it full. That should be enough.

You bring over the food and drink, setting them down on a side table while looking out towards the battlefield you, yourself created. You sigh, thinking of the insanity of this whole thing. This thought quickly passes as you eat the first stick of cold toast... It's not actually that bad. Two weeks for this situation... What was the contract again? Taking down the demon lord, that was done. So why did nothing try to contact you? Oh... The contract stated a beheading. You can probably do that when you return downstairs. You take another stick of toast.

You sip on the frilly cup of mulled wine. The demon lord had it damn good here. Your eyes wonder around the room, you spot a set of draws, a bookcase with very few books on it. There's actually a book on the seat next to yours, giving it a glance the title seems to be 'The Lusty Lizard-Folk Maid'. Okay, forgetting that. You focus back on the wine while un-shelling the egg.

Perhaps a vacation would help? Might be good to unwind after thi-

The thought was interrupted by a voice not sounding unlike a thousand pebbles being crushed against one another rang out.

"Congratulations on your resent victory. One story has been completed, perhaps you'll enjoy another? Hero..."

Technically an ex-hero now that the demon lord is dead.
>>
You freeze still at the sudden voice, slowly you turn you head from side to side. Even more slowly chewing on the half stick of toast that's inside your mouth, having the other half bob up and down in the air. Nothing appears to be around you, the room is empty accept for you. A small grumble escapes you before the voice returns, loud.

"A hero, enjoying his victory with the spoils of his enemy. Normally this wouldn't be toast but, you are an unconventional hero."

It pauses for a moment.

"The story of the human hero and the demon lord has been told, it has been accomplished. Your blessings are soon to fail and the corpse is gone. You shall soon have little power left in this world hero... There are more stories to be told and I will give you an offer to act in them."

You finish the stick of toast with a deep gulp, placing the cup down on the table.

You give a moment before speaking up to the air around you.

"Nice to meet you disembodied voice... No offence but, who exactly are you? Following this rout of questioning, what. Are you? Hopefully not a demon."

It returns, gravely chuckling following it.

"I am... Zaran, but a player in this game of life. An observer that does more than observe, I make things right. How they should be, I make things told always told. Your story has been told. I do not have a name for what I am. Just what I have said."

You sigh, eating toast and drinking wine really was too good to be true.

"Right then. So, what's with the failing blessings and the corpse being... gone?"

Zaran chuckles throughout the air again... Creep.

"Those who granted you a blessing gave you a contract. Behead the demon with your blade! This was actually meant to be the killing blow, they just didn't tell you. Should you have done this by the contract you would keep your blessing till the day you die. Not now however... The corpse! The demon lord is gone. This is due to the deterioration being much greater for the demon lord. Where it takes hours for a normal demon to steam and evaporate it takes her a fraction of that."

You nod slowly.

"Got it... So, what's with this offer thing?"

Zaran replies simply.

"Another story to be told."

"Another story? You said that the hero and the demon lord was a... story, right? Sure I've heard bards tellin' tales of this stuff but calling it a story doesn't give it justice. What do you mean by this anyway? What do I need to do in the... 'story' and why?"

Zaran mutters in the air, in your mind. Your whole body gives a shiver.

"A story is the best justice anything can have. To be told is to exist, it is power beyond anything you could imagine. A story is creation, pure creation at its finest and the stories that have been created must be told! Somewhere they must occur, differing worlds, differing circumstances it must happen and you shall make it happen for the reason that it HAS to happen. You shall be an avatar of the spinning words, worlds and wonders."

"..." Silence rings out after this.

Never one to waste food you slouch into the chair, biting into the egg before sipping wine and enjoying toast. You get the faint impression that is Zaran had a head, it would be slowly shaking from side to side in pure disappointment. You enjoy yourself so that's all that matters. To decline the offer would leave you where you started, without power and alone. In a world you don't exactly care too much about.

To accept however could possibly keep you holding power, power and strength you've come to like, even if slaughter is part of that. Not to mention another world, interesting things could be seen there... With a final gulp of mulled wine you let out a long sigh.

"The story? I shall be apart of it. Grant me your favor Zaran. I accept."

A long drawn out chuckle follows, words of delight spreading across you, even if it did sound like twelve shovels having intercourse with a pile of rubble.

"Good! good! Now hero, you shall be sent to a new world where a story is in progress. A variable is required however so you shall go to this place. The story shall be told by your deeds, I might make requests, do see that you complete them."

You sigh, giving a simple nod before your sight, sense of balance and touch vanish from you. A darkness that could challenge the deepest of unlit caves. A light that streams forth, blinding in its wake and finally. A very, very painful thump.

...

...

You raise your head from the grass. A forest is what lay before you, you give yourself time to pause then realize you're somewhat cold... This could be the fact that you have no clothing. You glance around and allow at the very least a small smile. Your sword is laying on the grass, not shattered or broken in anyway, shape or form. You pick it up and wonder where to go.

You lower yourself closer to the ground, listening and watching around you. Wherever the crazy voice has sent you, you're willing to bet it's not safe.

You snap your head to the side as a section of bushes rustle before flailing humans run out, armed to the teeth and panting heavily. Even with you in plain sight they don't seem to see you, mostly because they're looking behind themselves. You can see why, as other figures, monstrous ones charge out after them. They're evenly numbered. God those things are ugly. It's like an orc bred with a pig... and something with very sharp teeth. You look down at what can only be described as your manhood, then to your sword and finally back at the groups of charging humans and... things.

You ready yourself, this should be easy. Orcs don't compare much to demons so even without the full power of your blessings, if any remains it still shouldn't matter. You jump out with incredible speed hurtling past the human men with a scream that could scare the undead stiff. You hear a few exclamations as you fly past.

"Oh Maker! First darkspawn now THIS?!"

"Oh no..."

"RALLY UP MEN!"

Then you come into contact with these... things, your blade moves with the fluidity of a master swordsman, sadly however your defense does nothing of the sort and you find a large thick shield hitting your face with explosive force. Soon you witness the world flying past your clouded sight only for the back of your head to slam against a tree. Forcing your body limp as you collapse into unconsciousness.

We chumped the demon lord easily, and got knocked out by common orcs after a single nat 1?

>>42668377
You had the higher blessings of gods during that fight, currently you're in a different world where their touch cannot reach. Zaran did not give you even close to that amount of power. You're basically a slightly stronger than you look scrawny stable boy right now. You'll have the chance to get that strong again. Not even close to now however.

There's a lot to be said for superior numbers. A 1v1 is nothing like a 1v10.

I think it's partly just the ebbing and flowing of traffic on the site, and partly the pause. But also, that just tends to happen with new quests.

I wouldn't worry about it.

(Some time ago)

She cursed violently, looking through the enchanted stone that allowed her to watch the battle below. Not much of a battle now, her brothers and sisters dead and slain. "This... This isn't fair!" She spat out, whirling around and striding from the observation room. Leaving her poor egg behind.

"This is wrong! Where is our hope now Azarn!" Her voice bounced down the corridor she walked through, her voice reaching the ears of nothingness.

A voice not sounding unlike a thousand pebbles being ground against one another rang out. "Hope? I don't recall offering you... That. Rather I offered power and the chance for your kind to rise above the injustice, or what you perceived as the injustice placed upon your people."

Silence, other than the clicking of boots sounded for the remainder of the corridor. "That, is hope for us Azarn, it is the same. Now it is gone!" With a hard turn to the left she barged through the door and into the throne room, only to pause at the entrance. "This... isn't the portal room... Azarn."

"Another chance then my dear. This hero must be challenged, the weaved story demands it. I shall gift you power enough to meet him in battle. A chance for success and... hope."

>>
>>42670003

She grit her teeth, starting to turn before she felt the familiar pull, it was another chance what more did she have to lose? After standing still for a few moments she started to walk towards her throne, hands curled into fists. "This shall not do damage to my kind, as the last promise had done. Swear it Azarn."

"I swear it. There is no more damage to be done."

A sigh left her lips before she lowered her head reaching and sitting upon the smooth black stone throne. "This will be my end. What powers shall you grant now defiler?"

A chuckle came from the air. "Nothing, you are matched already and hope you have. You have accepted the story and my work is done. The words care not for who tells them. Only that we are told! We shall be told!" The door she had failed to shut now slammed closed at the last word.

"AZAR-" Her mouth clamped closed, hands magically bound to the black, thrones arms. Her eyes looked about as her head raised of its own accord. At the end of the long pillar filled room held the opening entrance door, a bland human stepping forward. Her mouth opened without her control, then she spoke.
