Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you tracked down a band of slavers to their campsite and suffered a touch of memory loss.

It is currently the 19th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

From your position perched upon the ridge of a dune you're afforded a view of the entire camp. It's at times like these that you wish you had some way to magnify or otherwise enhance your vision. Regardless, you're still able to glean quite a bit of information about the warband arrayed before you.

Assuming that there are two soldiers to a tent, as is standard procedure in the Shah's armies, then you're facing a force of about four hundred men, give or take fifty or so in either direction. You're finding it incredibly hard to focus your will, but it's safe to assume that at least some of these soldiers are trained Vatis. Most probably know a little bit of Fire or Water magic, with maybe a few among them gifted in Earth or Nature. You doubt any untrained soldier is going to know Metal magic.

You can't make out much about their equipment but they seem fairly professional. The armor on the soldiers patrolling the edge of the camp gleams in the light of cook fires and torches. Metal armor isn't cheap, so if they're all equipped similarly to the guards on patrol they might be more than simple bandits. Mercenaries would be your first guess, but anyone caught hiring Aghtaki to do their fighting for them would surely meet a fate worse than death should the Shah ever discover their treachery.

With the sun sinking below the horizon and a new day begun, most of the camp will probably be settling in to rest and relax. That means you could probably safely try to sleep off this fugue that's affecting you. On the other hand you do have a dragon for an adoptive son. If these are slavers, as the row of cages flanking the right side of the camp packed full of men, women, and children imply, you could probably just torch the lot of them without robbing the world of anyone vital.

However, Zahak is still young. With a trident and a knife you managed to kill a dragon several years, if not decades, older than Zahak. Plus a force of this size is almost certain to have a sizable division of archers in its ranks, meaning his ability to fly might not be quite as useful as it would be otherwise.

From what you've gleaned the plan you'd previously concocted entailed poisoning their supplies and then presumably letting some actual military force crush them in open battle, or at least forcing them to withdraw. Judging by the fact that your cloak has dissolved into incoherence and clings to you like some sort of ghostly shroud, you'll probably be the one forced to do the sneaking in and poisoning part. Low on vys as you are, is that really such a good idea? Sure if you're lucky you won't need to fight, but if you are spotted at some point and need to quickly and quietly dispose of a handful of people you'll be shit out of luck.

>Whatever you decide to do, tonight you need to rest. Tell them to wake you at sunrise and crawl back into the carriage.
>Maybe that potion the human woman in the green dress offered actually will help? Sure she's admitted to being a poisoner, but you're willing to take the risk.
>Mount up on Zahak. It's time to burn this place to the ground, risk to you and your son's health be damned.

After a moment's hesitation you slide down the side of the sand dune you're laying on top of, standing only once you're confident that you won't be seen from the camp. Your caution is probably unnecessary, but better safe than sorry. Dragging your feet back to the confluence of freaks and mutants that you apparently call friends you shoot a glare towards the human woman in the strange armor made of layered cloth and metal. “So what is this slime you want me to drink?”

The woman, whom you presume to be the leader of this little group, turns towards the other human in the green dress who smells like sulfur and blood. They babble on in that barbaric language of theirs for a time, much to the confusion of the pretty Samjan woman who begins speaking it herself. Are you the only one here who doesn't understand what they're saying?

The pretty Samjan, your driver you think, turns towards you and addresses you in your native tongue. “Mikhael, you speak Rhynian better than any of us. What in the Gods' names are you having Fulvia translate for?”

So the leader is Fulvia, you'll need to keep that in mind. “If I once spoke Rhynian I don't remember any of it. If I did I certainly wouldn't be having a human translate for me. Her accent is absolutely atrocious.”

The mutant with the horns frowns just slightly, the most facial expression you've seen from her yet. Really, she seems a terribly droll 'person'. You're about to turn your attention back to the human woman when the mutant bolts out Samjan almost as good as any native. “I don't like this Mikhael. Is this what most of your people are really like, behind the veneer of disinterest?”

Your driver shakes her head. “No, this Mikhael is just being a pompous ass. Which is weird, because before he didn't seem to care very much at all about race, just competence. The same is true of his master, come to think of it.” She glances towards you. “Maybe he got it from his father?”

Where did your life go so wrong that you ended up as the sort of degenerate who associates with humans, elves, and their sympathizers? When you get your memories back you're really going to need to reassess your life choices. “So are you going to passive aggressively gossip about me and my family like I'm not right here for the rest of the evening? By all means, feel free to do so. Just keep in mind you're the ones that are so cripplingly incapable of independent thought or action that you apparently traipse through the desert following my whims.”

Before either can respond Fulvia clears her throat, drawing your attention away from the other two women. “Mortia says this potion her mother taught her to make that's supposed to promote spiritual health. She says that her mother knew a ritual which entailed tearing away a piece of her soul and forcing it into an object, making it in many ways an extension of her own self. She would drink this after the ritual, so she didn't have to waste time sleeping.”

Huh, so you've sustained some sort of damage to your soul? You weren't aware such a thing was possible. Fulvia proffers the crystalline vial and you snatch it from her hands, holding it up to the light. Its contents are thick and opaque, a vile black in color. Pulling off the glass stopper you're immediately assaulted by an overpoweringly acrid stench. Out of instinct you recoil, holding the vial at arms length to spare your sinuses. “Gods above, woman. What on Earth did you put in here? It smells like death!”

There's a brief conversation between Fulvia and the other one, Mortia you presume, before Fulvia answers your question. “Your people would call its ingredients jaya, hing resin, and erandela oil. She extracted the acids from the jaya plant and mixed the hing resin and erandela oil to alleviate some of the bitter taste.”

(2/4)
>>
So it's basically acid mixed with oil and the concentrated resin of a plant which taste like rotten meat. Wonderful. Simply wonderful. Well, down the hatch it is then. Plugging your nose you raise the vial to your lips and kick it back. You gag almost immediately but force your mouth to stay closed, struggling to swallow the vile substance. Your tongue is left feeling burnt and raw by the time you finally send the goop slithering down your gullet. It's almost like you just swallowed a living thing, and now it's trying desperately to climb back out of you. The sensation is absolutely terrible.

It hits your stomach like a sack of bricks and just sits there, churning. At first you feel no different but then bits and pieces of memory start to filter back, slowly but surely you begin to remember just who these people are. Chryssa, the woman you met in the ruins of an old watched tower just a few short days after the Shah ordered you banished. Profectus, the forgotten Rhynian experiment you discovered in an old ruin north of Licae. Fulvia, that same facility's AI you dragged away from an otherwise desolate life.

You recall rescuing Darzi from those bandits, and your journeys through the mines of Longia. Unfortunately you only vaguely recall the time you spent in that strange realm beyond the portal at the bottom of the mine shaft. All you can really remember is that it's there you met Mortia and another person who's name escapes you at the moment. You also don't totally recall why you're here right now, just that there are bandits to poison.

Everyone's staring at you expectantly. Waiting. You're at a momentary loss as to what you're supposed to tell them, so you cough into a closed fist and pose the first question that occurs to you. “Are there any side effects to this potion, Mortia?”

There's a collective sigh of relief, a sigh that's abruptly cut off when Mortia starts running down a list of horrible things that the potion might do to you. “Well, from what I recall it's highly addictive. My mom would usually keep herself dosed up for a few days at which point she'd crash and spend the next week bed ridden. Internal bleeding, an inability to generate vys, dry mouth, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and muscle pains were the usual symptoms of withdrawal. She also used to complain about hallucinations, a sensation like bugs crawling underneath her skin, disembodied voices telling her to do things, random bouts of memory loss... really I don't know why she insisted upon using it so often.”

>Well shit, looks like you've only got a limited amount of time to get down to that camp and poison their supplies before you turn into a miserable wreck.
>Can't you just... leave? It's not like these raiders have pillaged your family lands, yet. Sure they're on the border but they probably won't cross, right?

We should either use them for practise (anatomy, soul manipulation, torture...), kill them, or turn them over to Kadir for execution (earning a bonus in doing so).

You stare at your friend and companion for a long while, letting the silence stretch on until she starts to fidget uncomfortably. “So what you're telling me-” You begin, pausing really just for effect. “-is that I have only a few hours to accomplish what I need to accomplish before turning into a miserable, bed ridden, pain racked dead weight?”

Mortia's fingers are nervously picking along the sleeves of her dress and she refuses to meet anyone's eyes. “W-well, I mean. Maybe. My mother took much higher doses than the one I gave you and for much longer stretches of time. You'll probably just feel some discomfort, and maybe vomit blood a few times. I don't know, Mik! I just brew the potions, I don't test them!”

You allow the serious facade you'd been maintaining to crack, your mouth splitting into a wide grin. Resting a hand on Mortia's shoulder in what you hope is a comforting gesture you try to calm her nerves. “Relax, Mortia. I'm just having a little fun at your expense. Honestly, I'm glad you happened to have the ingredients necessary to brew something like this. Now where's this poison I'm supposed to taint their supplies with?”

Mortia pouts, punching you lightly in the hip. She probably would've gone for your shoulder if she could reach, but as is the top of her head barely reaches up to your chest. “Don't be a jerk, Mik. I was really worried you were mad.”

“I think any normal and sane individual probably would've been mad.” Darzi interjects while Mortia is digging through a pouch strapped to her belt. “It's fortunate that Mik is neither of those things.”

Triumphantly Mortia retrieves a carved wooden container shaped vaguely like some sort of gourd with a cork stopper crammed into the neck. She holds it up towards you, but when you try to grab it she jerks it away from you. “Mik, this is powerful stuff.” She cautions. “All you need to do is dump a little bit into each of their water barrels. Too much and they'll be able to taste it, so ere on the side of caution. A brief splash will be more than enough to leave everyone who drinks from that barrel confined to the latrines for the next two days.”

She offers the wooden gourd again and this time lets you take it. You tuck the poison into your cloak and pull the loose garment just a little tighter around yourself. “Right then. A splash in each barrel of water, no more and no less. Wish me luck, and keep an eye on the camp. If things go badly I don't know how long I'll be able to last in my current state.”

Chryssa taps the mask of her armor. “I'll be keeping an eye on you the entire time, I'll probably know you've been discovered before you do.”

Turning on your heels you start marching towards the rise of the dune. The further you get from your companions the more you seem to blend in to the encroaching darkness of night, as if your cloak is responding to some unconscious signal. Cresting the ridge of the dune the camp spreads out in front of you as if some vast, sprawling city of white cloth.

A brief survey allows you to pick out the six carts arrayed amidst a confluence of tents on the right side of the camp.

Your available vys is far more limited than usual, so you decide to err on the side of expedience rather than caution. Crouching low you run across the sands, yet sparing a brief glance backwards reveals no footsteps. You can feel your feet sinking into the sand but the moment your cloak passes over the depression it's smoothed out, as if you'd never set foot there to begin with.

At first progress is swift but as you near the outermost rows of tents you slow your pace and channel vys, forcing yourself to fade from visibility. You pause to let a guard, dressed in white robes covered by a heavy lamellar coat, pass by before entering the camp proper at the northern end. The supply train is almost on the direct opposite end of the camp, to the southwest.

You're starting to think you've made some sort of mistake when you realize that there are surprisingly few soldiers inside the camp proper. They crowd around campfires or snore away soundly in their tents, unaware of your passing. A few times they look at you, sometimes seeming to stare straight at your face, but always they glance away without suspecting anything might be amiss.

The light from their fires blinds them, making the dark of night seem far deeper than it is. You find that merely by avoiding well lit areas you make swift progress through the camp. As a result of this policy of avoiding well lit areas you find yourself creeping but a few feet from the massive command tent. The brief snatches of conversation you hear inside pique your curiosity, and so you pause to listen further.

The speaker at the moment is a woman, you think. It's either an effeminate man or a masculine woman. “-here much longer, Damodar. I'm telling you, we push through the lands of these feeble westerners to the coast and meet with the smugglers where we arranged. None of this foolishness with the other villages.”
(1/2)
>>
They're speaking Samjan, you can easily understand what they're saying, but their accents are strange. They don't sound like native speakers but they also don't sound like Fulvia does when she speaks Samjan, or even how Chrys used to. Everything they say sound horribly nasal. “I have already made my decree Madhu, we pillage the villages of these 'Hakim'. From what the slaves have told us they have no strong military, it will be simple.”

A gasp draws your attention and your head whips to one side, where you find a young man, a boy really, probably no older than sixteen carrying a pitcher of water in his hands. He's dressed in lamellar armor, like the guards you saw patrolling the perimeter, and wears a long sword on his hip. Your concentration must have slipped while you were trying to get a better of idea of what was being said inside the tent.

You act almost without thinking. The boy has to die, or he'll alert the whole camp. Channeling vys you start rotting the tongue from his head, so he can't raise the alarm, but a streak of color in the corner of your eye catches your attention. All of a sudden the haft of an arrow is sprouting from the back of his neck, the barbed point poking out of his open mouth. Unceremoniously he slumps forward, his expressions still frozen in shock.
>Vys Pool: (25/[29])

At first you're not really sure how to react, but then Chryssa's seeps into your thoughts. {Try to be more careful, Mikhael. That was close.}

That manages to spur you into motion, and you quickly fade once more from visibility. Disposing of the body is as simple as sweeping your cloak over the still-warm corpse of the soldier. He's dragged silently into the void, you can only assume to become Ricky's next meal.
(2/3)
>>
That taken care of you quickly continue on towards the supply train. Curious as you are about the goings on in the command tent you have a mission to accomplish and further delays will only endanger that mission. You manage to reach the wagons without further difficulty and, though a guard sits at one end of the clearing where the bandits keep their supplies, you're able to easily splash a bit of poison into all twelve of their barrels of water.

>Mission accomplished, time to get back to your companions.
>See if you can't sneak back to the command tent and continue eavesdropping.

Right, so. For a while now I've been thinking your companions aren't really useful enough. I've been thinking that a good way to change that could be something like a saving roll you get (that I roll) when you have a friend looking out for you who's in a position to intercede on your behalf. This saving throw will only apply when you have a free companion, so if everyone is engaged in combat then you won't get that saving throw due to the fact none of your companions will be able to pull themselves away from their own opponents to save your ass.

Still deciding on whether or not it should cut the amount of vys you spend in half, or reduce the vys yo would've spent to zero.

Oh, and yeah. Chryssa gets a +20 to ranged combat.

You've accomplished what you set out to accomplish, so you start slowly creeping your way back across the camp towards the ridge where your companions are hiding. Your progress is slower on the way back because a lot of soldiers are starting to retire to their tents, stumbling half drunk or exhausted through the night. Several times you very nearly bump into someone or knock into a tent, but fortunately you manage to avoid any catastrophic mistakes.

Initially you set out to avoid the command tent but your curiosity gets the best of you. They've already mentioned that they plan on raiding your family lands, what else might you glean from their conversation? Creeping up along the side of the massive tent you keep yourself crouched low to the ground and focus on maintaining your invisibility.

At first you hear only silence, but then a woman dressed in strange armor sweeps out of the tent flap. Hte armor is unlike anything you've ever seen, a layered iron cuirass with a sort of gold inlay. A massive lion's head wrought in gold adorns a pauldron covering her left shoulder but the right is covered by a richly embroidered cloak. The woman herself is rather... well, large would be a good way to put it. Muscular but also just fat.

However, the figure who next emerges from the tent is even stranger still. Garbed from head to toe in resplendent armor and rich silks, you can't help but notice that he doesn't actually have legs. Instead he walks on a pair of articulated metal prosthetics, far too thin to be normal legs. You're not really sure what to make of him, to be frank.

From your position hidden behind a fold in the side of the tent you're provided a good vantage point both to watch and listen in on their conversation. The man, the leader and the one you presume to be Damodar, speaks with the same nasaly accent you head earlier. “Rest, Madhu. You deserve a night's sleep for the quality of your work these last few weeks. I must see to the treatment of my ailments, but meet me here before dawn.”

The woman grabs the hilt of a massive sword hanging off of her hip and crouches down until one knee rest in the sand. The sort of respect you'd see a vassal pay their lord. Domodar turns away from her does Madhu rise and march off into the camp, towards the east end and the slave cages.

Meanwhile the armored figure goes north, in the direction of the ridge behind which your companions hide. You notice a subtle hiss of air with every step he takes, a curious thing. You find yourself following him for a time, for no other reason than you seem to share a destination, but then he takes a detour west towards a large tent with a strange little chimney at the top, from which smoke is pouring.

You stare for a moment at the tent which apparently houses the leader of this band of mercenaries or soldiers, or whatever they are. You could investigate what he meant by his 'ailments', but frankly that's not really relevant to what you're doing and you don't know how much longer this potion is going to last. Instead you continue on North, towards the distant ridge behind which your companions are waiting for you.

Getting past the patrols is easy, considering you're invisible and leave no footprints. Once out of the camp you break out into a jog, keeping yourself as low to the ground as you can manage. Scaling the massive dune atop which your friends are waiting is a far more daunting task than sliding down it had been, but you manage to scramble up with only minor difficulty. The cloak seems to help you maintain your balance.

Finally cresting the ridge of the dune you let your invisibility drop, suddenly feeling incredibly drained by the effort of maintaining an illusion for so long. Chryssa seems to melt out of the stone itself, just sliding down the side of the dune with her bow in one hand and an arrow in the other. The rest of your companions are gathered around the carriage, Mortia and Fulvia sitting in the driver's bench while Profectus has sat down on the steps leading up to the cabin and Darzi paces in front of the camels.

At the sight of you Fulvia speaks in her usual clinical tone. “Mikhael has returned unharmed, just as I assured you that he would.” She looks to Darzi, who's finally stopped pacing and whipped around to face you. “Your concern was entirely unfounded.”

Darzi sighs, shooting Fulvia a look. “Walking into the middle of a base filled with hostile soldiers is a death sentence for most people, Fulvia.”

(1/2)
>>
>>42659857
Probably. But on the other hand, Japan sells distilled virgin piss bodywash, so it takes all kinds.
>>
You stand up, your cloak seeming to recede as you step closer to the carriage and your friends. “Then it's a good thing I'm not most people, eh?” You turn towards Chryssa. “Thanks, by the way. That was a spectacular shot. I mean, how far away was that? It must have been well over five hundred feet and you sent that arrow straight through his throat.”

Chryssa clears her throat demurely. “By my estimates it was around six hundred fifty eight feet, and a few inches. Really, it was not so impressive. I'm sure with a mask like mine-” She taps the complex combination of metal, wires, and lenses that is her Elaudian Death Mask “-almost anyone could've made that shot.”

Darzi interjects. “We need to get to Nazir, you said that's your family's new seat, right? If we can convince your father or brother or whoever's there to raise the levies and muster the guard, we should be able to crush these bandits in the field.”

>You agree. Take the driver's bench and get this show rolling again.

You're honestly starting to feel terrible. Your stomach is roiling and the edges of your vision are starting to blur. “That sounds like a fine plan, Darzi. A fine plan. In fact-” You glance between the faces of your other companions. “-why don't I just leave things in your hands here, Darzi? You seem to have it all under control. As for myself, I'm going to crawl into a dark hole and try to sweat out the poison Mortia fed to me.”

“By your own request!” Mortia is quick to correct you. “Don't go painting me as some sort of bad guy in all this, Mikhael. You're the one who elected to drink it.”

Darzi nods, the helmet of her Elaudian armor flowing away from her head like water pouring off of wax. Elaudian Steel is such a strange material. “Get some rest, Mikhael. The Gods know you need it.” She glances towards Chryssa, some wordless communication passing between the two of them. They trade places with Mortia and Fulvia, who pile into the carriage along with you and Profectus.

You spare only a few moments to strip your armor off. You don't both stuffing it into your cloak, but somehow it ends up in there anyway. You suspect Ricky has something to do with it but you're honestly too tired to give it much thought. Almost as soon as you crawl into the literal hole in the wall that serves as a bed on this carriage, you're asleep. Your dreams are plagued by visions of a city on fire and the perpetually grinning faces of the three skeletal spectators who seem so fascinated by your life.
