You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

"A frontal charge? Is that it?" Bannon grimaces as he looks down at the strategic map.

It's been about one week since the tournament had ended and Breton officially allied itself to Tilea. Since then, Breton had been slowly massing forces along its border with Reikland, preparing for a massive offensive. Reikland, aware of the buildup, has been doing the same. Currently, the bulk of the forces on both sides were focused around a castle called Round Top, which sat atop a large hill. I was the lynchpin of Reikland's border defenses in this region, with its commanding view giving whoever controlled it advance warning of any attempts to cross. Obviously, if any offensive into Reikland were to succeed, Round Top had to be taken.

The only issue was figuring out exactly how. It seemed the Bretons were advocating for the most direct route. A full frontal attack to take the castle with brute force.

"Didn't you see the defenses Reikland is setting up? You're going to taken heavy casualties!" Bannon says in exasperation. "Trust me, I know."

"And it will be glorious" Lord Artois, who was the overall commander of the Berton forces here, says proudly. "They will sing songs of it!"

"I give up..." Bannon groans.

"If I may." Parker politely interjects. "Would you be opposed to us forming a small skirmishing force?"

"A skirmishing force?" Lord Artois raises his eyebrow.

"A small unit of fast, mobile VTs." Parker explains. "There's lots of forest cover here on this section of the border, which a small force can sneak through and flank the Reikland positions."

"Hmmmm." Lord Artois nods sagely. "The idea has merit, but who would lead such an expedition? I know none of my knights will."

"I can do it." You say, standing up.

"Are you sure about this?" Lord Artois frowns, still skeptical.

"Of course! Roy here was born in raised in remote environments like this!" Parker nods. "His crew is more than qualified for this!"

"Even so." Lord Artois frowns. "I doubt any of the knights would be willing to take such an unglamorous mission."

"What about the men at arms?" Tarin asks. "They're pretty much there to do whatever the knights won't right?"

"That's true, but I hesitate to trust your lives in the hands of mere peasants." Artois frowns. "Besides the lack of knightly fighting skill, they also have inferior steeds, if they even have access to any."

"I can work with the Men at Arms." You assure him. "Actually, the lighter and faster we are, the better we are as a skirmishing unit."

"All right, then I'll assign you some peasant riders." Lord Artois nods. "I trust you're familiar with their steeds?"

"Yeah." You nod. From what you've seen in the camp, peasants were given "ultralight VTs". They were tiny machines, barely even larger than the person piloting them. They carried pretty light armament, but they were light, fast, and maneuverable. Moreso than larger VTs, anyways. "That works for me."

"Maybe we should have Rock or the twins accompany you?" Parker suggests. "Just to give you some extra support.

"Rock and Alex can tag along." You say. "Axel and Alfie's VT is a bit too slow and unwieldy for this type of job."

"That's a good point." Parker nods and turns to Rock and Alex. "Are you two fine with this arrangement?"

"Yeah, no problem." Rock grins. "Frontal charges aren't exactly my cup of tea, either."

"Then it is agreed." Lord Artois nods as he rearranges a few pieces on the map signifying force dispositions. "You two will lead a squadron of twelve mounted yeomen to attack the enemy from the rear."

"Now, the biggest issue is the timing." Parker speaks up again. "You can either try to infiltrate before the attack or during it. If you go before, you'll have more time to set up, and we can get the battle done quicker, which means less casualties."

"But then that means we'd have to sneak in while the enemy is still at full alert." Alex frowns.

"Correct." Parker nods. "The alternative is to wait for the attack to start proper, and then flank them while the enemy's attention is diverted. Of course, this means you'd have to operate as conditions on the ground dictate."

"It'll make sense to infiltrate ahead of the battle." You say. "We'll most likely have to do it the night before. The darkness will help us get through their lines, and I don't think the yeomen are trained for extended operations."

"Makes sense." Parker nods. "The first charge is scheduled for tomorrow morning, so you'll need to move tonight."

"Got it." You nod. "Tarin, will Clementine be ready by then?"

"She's been ready the moment we got here." Tarin crosses her arms. "We can go right now if we wanted."

"Well, I suggest you get going, then." Bannon grunts as he takes the lead again. "If you got any other business, better take care of it now."

You decide to take one last look at the frontlines. This was one of those rare occasions where the lines were close enough that both sides could see each other clearly. Behind the defensive palisades, the gathered knights all give you respectful nods, and a few even salute. You give them a few respectful nods of your own as you head towards one of the forward observation posts atop one of the palisades.

"O-oh, I didn't know you would come here, Milord!" The young squire manning the post stammers.

"Just passing by." You say simply.

"W-will you be here long, Milord?" The squire asks cautiously, not sure how to act around you.

"Not long. I'll be out of your hair soon." You say as you take out a pair of binoculars.

As you survey the lines, you note how the Bretons' brightly colored and heavily customized VTs were all arranged in neat and straight lines, all ready to charge at a moment's notice. Up in front of them, thousands of peasant infantry were milling about in camps. You wonder if they felt any sort of anger or bitterness or sadness at the fact that they were merely living shields for the VTs. Or maybe they were proud about it.

You weren't sure which made you feel the most uneasy.

You then turn you attention to the Reikland line. Of course, you can see the same defenses you saw erected on the border of Tilea. A maze of trench lines, bunkers, and anti-tank guns comprised the first line of defense. Further back, you could see the barrels are artillery poking in the air, as well as Reikland VTs and other reserve forces lying in wait.

So far, you didn't see any elite units, though. These looked to be regular line and garrison troops. No sign of those undead soldiers, either. Maybe they were all deployed at the Tilean front?

Perhaps the odds weren't so stacked against you as you thought.

"Hey, Roy!" Rock calls out. "Quit sightseeing and let's go already! We're rounding up our little skirmishing unit!"

You finally pull your gaze away from the frontline and give a grin to the squire on watch.

"As you were." You say before leaving the observation post and joining Rock.

"So, notice anything special?" Rock asks as the two of you make your way back to the staging point.

"Nothing out of the ordinary." You shrug. "Just the standard Reikland defenses."

"We should all know by now that Reikland is anything but normal." Rock reminds you.

"Point." You nod.

"And one thing I gotta know." Rock's expression turns grim. "That girl, Hess. If we run into her, what are you gonna do?"

Dammit, missed yesterday's thread about a certain idol...

I can just imagine how a Narrator would act:

You are Cole, regaining consciousness after jumping into that hole.
Perhaps if you had a bit more foresight, you wouldn't be as blind as a mole.

'Who, and where the hell are you, why are you rhyming, and why am I wearing this dress?!', you shouted full of rage and anger
'Oh, Cole, I am the Narrator and I am everywhere, free from your ire and danger
You see, I'm here to "Help You" escape Wonderland with my almighty power as long as you follow my story writing
I can alter the universe of the written world, so I'm not the one you should be fighting.
The trees, the people, and everything you can imagine are subject to my Godlike-might.
I can even dictate what underwear you're wearing tonight (perhaps they are white?).'

Your face turns red as an apple, and your hands are filling with power!
A shock, a flash, and a flicker that would make any man cower!

"I'd fight her just like any enemy." You state flatly. "That's what she expects of me, and I'm pretty damn sure she'd treat me the same."

"Man, war makes some really complicated relationships, doesn't it?" Rock shakes his head and laughs.

By this point, you've reached the rally point for your little skirmishing unit. Of course, it was situated farther behind the line and in a covered area so Reikland observers wouldn't be able to see you. You see twelve men in rather grubby clothes gathered, each ones standing at attention next to an ultralight VT. Lord Artois was standing there as well, no doubt instructing the yeomen. Meanwhile, Alex and Tarin were preparing their respective VTs.

"Roy, these are my very best yeomen." Lord Artois says as he walks up to you. "They may not be very bright, but they're extremely loyal and will follow orders. Just tell them what to do and they will do it with no question. I have already instructed them to follow your every word."

"Thanks." You say as you look at the gathered yeomen. They all look at you, their eyes showing that they weren't sure what to think of you.

You decide to be realistic about things. After all, you were pretty sure these guys wouldn't understand anything other than blunt orders.

"Men, I'm not going to lie." You say as you pace in front of them. "What we're going to be doing is important work, but it's going to be dangerous. I can't promise that all of you will come back alive, but what we'll be doing tonight will save lives. Not just noble lives, but the lives of your fellow peasants on the front. Just stick close to me and follow my orders, and we'll get out of this alive. Are we clear on this?"

"Yes, my Lord!" All the yeomen bark in unison.

Well, they certainly were obedient.

"All right, then follow us!" You say as you starting climbing up Clementine. "You stay within visual contact of us at all times!"

"Yes, my Lord!"

"So how are we going to handle this, Roy?" Rock asks as he boards his own VT as well. "We try to sneak in with no fuss? Or do we cause a bit of a 'distraction?'"

"What kind of distraction are we talking about here?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Well, how do you think the Reiks would react if a flare were to 'misfire' over a certain part of the line?"

Try playing the game if you get the chance. The controls aren't actually that bad once you get a grip on them. The first mission doesn't give you that much breathing room, though.

Really, the only tough part is learning to use the right stick to aim. It's a bit weird having to use a full-size joystick for that. At least, it was for me. Maybe not so much if you're an Elite and/or Descent vet.

Face it, Merc: if you were an anime studio and all your quests different shows:

VMQ would be the classic that everybody recommends to start with

ACQ would be the new hotness

HEIST would be the one-hit wonder that has a small fanbase that appreciate what it did but hate that there was a lot of untapped potential

And CIMQ would be the runaway hit that spawns all the merchandise and has all the OVA's--which are pretty much what these fucking specials are.

"Then let's get moving." You say as you settle down in the hatch. "Tarin, forward at half speed. No running lights."

"Half speed, no lights. Roger." Tarin says simply as she fires up the engine. With a muted roar, Clementine stalks forward. The yeomen fall in behind you while Rock and Alex take up the rear. By the time you reach no man's land, the sun is already fully down, and darkness reigns, only interrupted by the searchlights that illuminate both sides.

On the one hand, the searchlights would make it easier for the Reiks to detect you. On the other, it was an obvious tell to let you know where the gaps in their surveillance were.

VTs are by no means quiet machines, but with enough ambient noise emanating from both sides of the line, mostly from running VT engines and generators, it was a simple matter for your small VT force so sneak through the Reiklanders' thinner line on the flanks.

"Doesn't look like anybody has noticed us." You say as you open up your hatch and look around, letting your eyes adjust to the darkness.

"No tails. I think we're clear." Rock confirms.

Not really--it still had gunplay and explosions and it just went loud every time.

What I'm looking for is something quiet--a mystery to solve that has tense moments but nothing too overt action-wise until the plot calls for it. We've had blood and guts and explosions for awhile now; a left-handed turn into some lighter fare in a different genre wouldn't exactly be uncalled for.

But then again, I suppose that, to an extent, that's what all the CIMQ one-shots are.

"There are no monsters." You try to assure them. "Your eyes will adjust to the darkness. Trust me."

"I-if you say so." The yeoman says nervously. You guess there wasn't much that could be done about inexperience and superstition.

Your small formation creeps further through the trees. After a few minutes of forced marching, you duck back into Clementine to consult the map.

"We should be right around here." Tarin points. "That puts us in a position to flank their main defensive line and roll it up. If we can coordinate it with the main attack, we should cause their first line of defense to collapse."

"Hey, but if we're in this far, we can move further and scout our their rear lines." Alex suggests. "It'll give us a better idea of their defensive capability, as well as gives the possibility of better targets of opportunity."

"Sounds risky." You frown.

Hey I've got a Model 12.

With the barrel cut back to just in front of the tube and the stock cut off behind the grip it would be a big ugly unwieldy weapon as long as your leg and awkward as hell to maneuver through a hatch.

You want a handgun and maybe a compact submachine gun. No one with real killing to do uses a shotgun.

"Roger!" Tarin nods as she bends down Clementine's legs as far as they can go, lowering the VT's profile. She then cuts the engine, silencing the machine.

Now all you could do was sit and wait.

You and Tarin watch through your viewports intently as the Lynxes pause and start scanning the forest, their red optics glinting in the dark. You keep your hand firmly on the trigger. Even with the engine off, the gun was still operational. You just hoped you wouldn't have to resort to using it.

Well shit.

As the rules say, you can downgrade a crit success to a normal success if you decide to bank the 20. Do you want to bank the 20 for a FATE POINT?

>You gained a FATE POINT
>You currently have 2 points!

The Lynxes, having apparently found nothing, turn back and begin galloping off to whatever it was they were previously doing, leaving you alone. Once the searchlights were out of sight and you couldn't hear their engine noise any longer, you finally let out a sigh of relief.

"Should we continue?" Tarin asks. "That was a close call. Maybe we should link back up with Rock and Alex."

"We keep going forward." You maintain. "We didn't go this far just to back out now."

"Roger." Tarin nods as she powers up Clementine's engine again. Your VT slowly stands back up on its feet, and once again you trudge deeper and deeper into the forest.

You figure you're about ten miles past Round Top when you come upon a large road. It was big, wide, and paved.

"So what to do you think Tarin? Supply route? Reinforcement path?" You ask.

"I think we're going to be finding out soon." Tarin says as she looks through her viewports. "Incoming vehicles."

"Get us into an observation position."

Tarin dutifully guides Clementine to a raised hill, which was still covered with enough foliage to conceal your VT. You crack your hatch open to see a large column of VTs marching down the road. All painted black, denoting them as some sort of special or elite unit.

And they were the newer model panthers, too.

You briefly wonder if Hess might be among them...

NEW TANKS

THIS IS BAD

We need to strike them in the side or rear from a vantage point

Of using the recoilless rifle to ambush them from the rear, mid range to rapidly down some of them.

Either way I'm getting bad vives.

Thanks for running, Merc. Another good thread, if a bit slow starting. We spent a lot of time on front-loaded tactical choices. Could those kind of votes be resolved more quickly and efficiently by asking readers to pick more than one option at the same time? For example, after an extended expository post, we might be able to respond with:

>I'm willing to work with the men at arms.
AND
>Axel and Alfie can tag along.

Since we are voting on who to bring for our crew, combining these two choices would be understandable. To clarify, in the above example, even though a person's vote for ">I'm willing to work with the men at arms." might be in line with the majority, the vote for ">Axel and Alfie can tag along." might be in the minority. Just like in real elections, some issues on the ballot may succeed while others fail!

>tl;dr if we have ballots with more than one logically-related choice on them, we can spend less time choosing our team and more time rolling dice for action! Keep up the good work, Merc!
