Light shines through the small open gap of the windows curtains and gently caresses the girl's sleeping eyes. The girl's eyes twitch slightly at the disturbance and turns over to the other side of the bed, intent on sleeping past the morning. In fact, sleeping is all the girl has been doing since the unfortunate incident a week pass.

“Lady Ornesia, wake up!”

The bed sheets are removed and a squaky voice commands the girl to awaken. The girl struggles, but finally gets up from her bed. She sighs in a tired, sorrowful manner and looks down.

“...I know you're sad about your father's passing, but it has been a week now Lady Ornesia,” the maid says with an equally sad expression. “It's time for you to rule this kingdom and we are looking for your guidance. Please, for your late father's sake and for the people of your city, we need to start now.”

You are Linette Ornesia, seventeen years of age, princess and heir to the kingdom of Seraphia; a small and unimportant territory in the land of Lucedonia. You were spoiled as a child; kept to the walls of the palace and out of the harsh real world. The politics, wars, and monsters outside were unknown to you. Life seemed a bliss until your father passed away a week ago, leaving you unprepared to rule your kingdom. You have been keeping to your room in mourning but it seems time has come to finally follow in your father's footsteps. Or not.

>You are right, I must get up
>I do not want to. Is running the kingdom not why I have servants?
>...I am too afraid

This is a quest inspired by the game, Long Live the Queen. The setting is fantasy medieval with magic. You play a princess attempting to rule a small, unimportant kingdom rise back to the glory of former past. The only problem being, you are COMPLETELY USELESS and CLUELESS as you have been spoiled as a child. It is up to you to quickly learn and overcome the easy life that has hampered you. Whether becoming a charismatic queen that draws heroic servants to your cause, a battle-leading amazon conquering land, or a foolish bumbling tyrant is all up to you.

The game is not harsh like Long Live the Queen where everything can kill you and end the game. It is however imperative to think about the consequences of your actions and decisions. Too many mistakes may cost you reputation, friends, the love of the people, and maybe even your rule. All in all however, common sense is a fortuitous guide.

And remember that is sometimes better to play through consequences for the sake of story, character, and roleplay that just trying to win something.

You move to the side of the bed and remove flakes and dust from your eyes with your delicate fingers. Looking down sorrowfully for a few seconds, you reply to your servant.

"You are right. I cannot sleep forever. There are responsibilities that befall me," you say as you rise from the bed.

"There you go," the servant says with a smile. You take a glance at the servant, a short-black haired girl and small in height. Her name is Tammy and she has been your servant since you were a small babe. She may only be a maid in your service, but what you know is that she is completely trustworthy and loyal.

"Lady Ornesia," she says as you both move to the drawers so that you may change from your pajamas. "There are already guests in the throne room. Nobles from various houses and some of your ministers. You need to dress and attend to them; today is after all the time you take the reigns of our kingdom."

A lot of things go through your mind. How should you deal with these nobles? What kind of presentation do you want to give? How are you going to rule? You should be mindful of a lot of these things as a ruler.

For now, your attire.

The nobles of this land are a bigoted and lofty lot. They stand to make themselves above others and expect the same from their peers. As such you know you must dress in their manner if you wish to mingle successfully with them and keep their loyalties. A ruler without the support of nobles can be disastrous.

>Linette gets Basic Court Etiquette

Tammy helps you to your outfit, a velvet purple dress with a gaudy ribbon around your waist. The design has small flower petals as artwork and full of fluff trims around the edges. You put on a pair of gloves and when looking at the mirror you look quite dignified. Your servant smiles.

"Let's go meet out guests," you say with a nod and smile. As you walk out of your room and head to the throne room, your heart beats a little faster. You may have interacted with friends a bit, but never a full court.

When you enter the court, dozens of eyes come to you. Men and women dressed the same way as you are. You take a look around to see their faces; some look sorrowful, some with plain expressions, and others with worm-like, parasitic looks. You should make sure to know who are your allies and those that are not.

A small girl in a wheelchair comes slightly forward. Small tears in her eyes, she bows her head.

"I am sorry to hear of your late father," she says.

"That is Lady Vivian of House Yorin," Tammy whispers in your ear. "She has been unable to walk since birth and is quite fragile."

Though for the past week you have been in sorrow and unmotivated, you decide now is the time to change. You cannot be the small fragile girl forever. You look at the girl and nod with a smile.

"Yes, his time was unfortunate," you reply with a brave look. "I am glad to know there are others who would sympathize with me. But now we must move on and make certain our kingdom of Seraphia still lives on and pray his spirit watches over us."

Vivian looks slightly surprised, perhaps a little shocked. She bows her head and smiles a few seconds after.

"You are truly strong, Lady Ornesia," she replies as she retreats back. You continue to make your way to the throne but another man steps up.

"Lady Ornesia, truly a saddening event," a fat, bearded man says. Her is dressed gaudy as they come and his fingers are full of rings. His head except for the side are bald and the girth of his stomach is extraordinary. Despite his words, the man seems happy and genial. Maybe a little too genial.

"I am here for you Lady Ornesia. I know the burdens of ruling and governing on one so young is hard. Please, feel free to pass me responsibilities and aid in administration. In fact, think of me as a second father."

You glance at your maid, and she looks slightly uncomfortable. "That is Lord Barrington," Tammy tells you. "He is the most, if not one of the most, prominent Houses in our city."

"Of course, of course!" the man replies rubbing his hands. "Any time you need my help feel free to send me a message. This man will be ready for your beck and call."

You reject Barrington in goon manner and play the game of politics. Dislike or not you want to keep the nobles placated. You make your way to the throne, and address all before you.

"Though it has been a saddening week it it to my hope that you all will continue to serve this kingdom. I thank you all for coming and I ask for your continued support."

The court bows in reply and you talk with them a bit more before they are all dismissed. You sigh in slight exhaustion once all the nobles leave and you are left in the court room with Tammy. The court etiquette have been dealt with, but now where do you begin?

Right now the biggest concern to you is obtaining the love and loyalty of your people. You remember that your father was a kind and well-liked man and you want to follow in his footsteps.

"Tammy," you say. "I want to keep my people happy and make sure they love me, you say with a determined look and your hand balled to a fist. "What should I do first? Where do I begin?"

"Ahh well... Errr," Tammy replies scratching her chin. "I think you did fine with the nobles, they left happy it seems. But there are also the commoners too who usually keep out of political stuff like this. If you want to get their support... Maybe you can open a suggestions box? Allow petitioners? Go out and greet the people? To be honest, I'm not really an expert on all these things..."

"What are you good at?"

"C-Cooking and cleaning?" she replies with a shrug and awkward smile.

You sigh a bit. Looking over things now your administration is full of old men and mundane people from your father's days. While maintaining the happiness of your people you should also get some talent on your ranks.

Should you start working immediately? Or perhaps do other things beforehand? It is after all only your first day.

You decide working immediately is a bad idea and decide to overview the situation of your kingdom beforehand. You and Tammy get the papers, ask the ministers around, look over the map of the city. All in all it is overbearing tiresome work and reviewing everything takes the entire day. It is nightfall by the time your are finished and both you and Tammy are exhausted.

"Lady Ornesia let me go to beeeed," Tammy whines.

You find out that amongst other cities and kingdoms, yours is a rather small and unimportant part on the land of Lucedonia. The population is small, about 10,000 in your city and another 10,000 on the surrounding various villages countryside. Much of your people are humes, but some elves and dwarves exist. Your castle is situated next to a small river that divides your home from the other parts of the city. The castle is somewhat old and dusty, perhaps in need of some refurbishment. Almost little to not talented people serve you.

Not much trade comes here nor much visitors. There are many fields left unworked and a lot of room to expand your city. Your kingdom grows some wheat and barely for the most part, rather lacking in diversity. To the south some miles away from the city is your port to the open sea where some fish and little trade from other lands come.

You have 2000 gold and 5000 supply food in total. Taxes will get you more but you are unsure how much you get.

...It seems there is much to do in maintaining your kingdom. And quite frankly starting almost anywhere will help your kingdom better.

"Oh, one more thing Lady Ornesia," Tammy says. "You should work up a schedule where you study and train in the morning, manage your kingdom in the noon. I don't think you have much skill in... well uhhh.. anything..."

You look at Tammy with a frown and she laughs in embarrassment.

The jokes aside, the dull of the night brings thoughts back to your father. The days when he would read you a story as a small child in your room. Your excited smile turns to a slight sorrowful one as you gaze out the window.

"Hey Tammy, how was my father's rule? He was a good ruler right?"

"Lady Ornesia..." Tammy looks at you sadly. "Yes, your father was very kind. He was the one who hired me and raised me in this castle despite being a commoner. I think a lot of the ministers and workers here loved him. But... well," she says looking down.

"Go on, it's okay," you say looking over the girl who seems hesitant.

"Some people also say your father was weak. Your father never really ruled but let subjects do the work. He spent a lot his days in leisure, drinking tea and writing poetry. Some say he's the reason why our kingdom of Serpahia is small and underwhelming."

You nod and make sure to remember the thoughts. Though your father may have been kind, he never achieved much. Should you follow the same rule, or become something better?

"Well, let's get to bed Tammy," you say rising from your table. "It is only going to get harder from now and I hope I can rely on you. You are the only one I trust for now."

The next day comes and you are shaken awake by Tammy. You rub your eyes and yawn.

"I think I need another hour, let me sleep," you say.

"Well, you can go back to sleep, but that would keep our guest and your tutor waiting..."

"Ahh, you got one!" you say rising. "Quickly, get me my clothes. Where is she now?"

"At the courtyard where she will teach you," Tammy says helping you to dress. You both quickly make your way to the courtyard. The thought of what wizard here to teach you excites you. Some legendary old wizard? A bearded hermit sage who lived in the mountains? A beautiful sorceress woman that charms men?

What awaits before you at the courtyard is a pink-haired, small girl around your age. A girl that looks nervous and fragile, but definitely has the look of a mage to her what with the frilly wardrobe and the metallic staff by her side. You blink a few times.

Not at all take aback by the fact that the tutor before you is not some legendary wizard or the other images of powerful mages you had in your thoughts, you enthusiastically walk over to the girl and shake her hand.

"Nice to meet you, nice to meet you!" you exclaim as you grab hold of her hands and shake them furiously.

"Eh? Eh!?" the girl can only reply in surprise as you latch on to her.

"You shall be my teacher yes? On my path to become a famous mystical ruler? Tell me your name, Teacher!"

"I-It's Rorona Frixell," the girl replies. "I-I can't say I'm the best but I'll aid you in any way I can."

"Let us kindly start right away," you say with a smile. "Tell me about magic!"

You both sit down on the courtyard's table and the pink-haired girl nervously look around the place. It doesn't seem as though she is used to being around a castle.

"Well, to begin with, there are lots of different kinds of magic..." she says. "Elemental magic of all kinds like fire, wind, water that manipulate nature. Healing magic that bases itself on the Goddess Petra. There are also magic that enhance and weaken others. You can for a short time make yourself or someone else fight better, run more quickly, vice-versa and the like. We usually call them Support Magic. And ummm... There are some dark arts as well... Forbidden ones. I know nothing about those. If you want to learn magic you should try and focus on one."

Support magic seems good to you. If such magic can alter others perhaps it would be the first step in obtaining your goal. You tell Rorona of this.

"Okay, we also need a subject to use on then. Umm... should I cast a spell on you? And then you can try some on me?"

"No need, Tammy is here for that!" you exclaim as you motion for the maid to come over. "She can be our guinea pig!"

"Eh? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!? Wait a minute, my job is a maid Lady Ornesia, I'm already doing a lot than what my initial contract entailed!"

You refuse to hear her complaints and unfortunately for the poor girl she is chosen as the subject of magic for today. Rorona politely asks her to start jogging.

"Ummm... Okay, here we go!" Rorona says as she raises her wander and aims it at the girl running, chanting a few words. Small lights come forth and envelop Tammy who has resigned herself to jogging around the courtyard. The lights circle around Tammy's feet and in a few seconds you can see that the girl is running a bit faster. A round of jogging and Tammy is back with you.

"Well that's the gist of it," Rorona says. "You chant the spells, focus your mind and spirit, then cast the magic."

"Errr... I didn't feel like it had much effect on me," Tammy replies.

"S-sorry," Rorona says looking a bit downcast. "I'm not the best mage around. In fact, I kind of only graduated a year ago... A more trained mage would have given better results."

"Amazing! Magnifeco! Truly a sight to behold!" you exclaim, the words of both Tammy and Rorona having bypassed your head in the excitement of it all. "You are really the best Teacher, with you around I think I can dazzle the entire world!"

"R-Really? Do you mean that?"

"Of course! Tammy did a great job finding you! Please, remain my tutor for as long as possible!"

"Ahhh! Maybe I have what it takes!" your tutor exclaims happily with fists mid-air. It seems your attitude has unexpectedly given the mage the confidence and attitude to further this lesson. Tammy can only watch is disbelief at the sight of you two.

The training begins. Rorona teaches you the basic of chanting and casting. It takes numerous tries, but by the hour you learn to cast. You do various buffs on Tammy, from increasing her speed, strength, to changing her moods, and the like. By the end of the morn, you have gained a small grasp of Support Magic. Your ability to learn is in fact exceptional than most people, likely aided by the fact that both you and Rorona's moods were heightened when doing the training.

>gained Beginner Support Magic

You feel slightly tired by the end of the training and Rorona explains using magic drains away one's spirit and energy, and it should be used excessively. But the one most tired is Tammy who has been the target of your spells and is lying on the grass.

You thank the girl for a job well-done.

"Umm, no, thank you Lady Ornesia," Rorona replies with a smile. "It's been hard getting a job since I left my home. This will actually help me greatly."

"Where are you currently staying at?" you ask.

"At the local inn. I take job requests from healing to adventuring for pocket change. Lady Tammy found me around the guild when she got me this job," she states.

"Why don't you stay at the castle," you say, thinking it must be a bit difficult to pay at an inn every night.

"What? Oh no, I couldn't impose," the girl replies shaking her hands.

"It is quite fine," you say with a smile. "There is a lot of room and it would actually be nice to have you around. With my father having passed away, I am actually in need of more people really. Ah, and of course we would give you meals as well. Would that be alright in return for your continued tutelage and support?"

The pink-haired girl stays silent for a moment. And then sniffing, she begins to cry.

"Wahhhhh! No one has been this nice to me! In fact my own teacher was downright abusive! Thank you Lady Ornesia, I won't forget this!"

With the morning’s training done, you now set your duties to managing your kingdom. As reviewed before, your kingdom is still small and your funds limited to 2000 gold. There are endless things to be done for your kingdom and obtaining support is one of your first goals. What should you do first? Go out and meet with people? Open the court for petitions?

Before you make a decision, the chambers of the court room open and a man enters. The man has black-hair, is young in his twenties, and wears a white overcoat. Clasped to his side is a sword. He comes before you and bows.

“Greetings Lady Ornesia, it has been a while,” he says.

You are confused, but after a few seconds, you recognize the man. He is your cousin.

“Raymund! It has been... It has been long,” you say. The last time you saw him you were around still a little girl.

“Yes,” he says with a nod. “Unfortunately, I have received news of your father's passing away. Before he passed away he told me I was to aid you when you took over for him. There was still a few years before I was to come to court but...” he looks down sullenly for a few seconds. “But it seems I should be here now. Please allow me to serve here,” he says.

You decide for now the best way to interact and gain the support of the common people is to open your court for people to come at a given time and offer their problems to you. You give the orders for guards to spread the news around the city and the surrounding villages.

For now you are unlikely to gain many visitors as you just implemented the policy. A few hours in, you receive news that you have received two petitioners. You allow the first person through.

The man who comes before you is a old man in commoner's clothing. His skin is tanned and despite being elderly his body is quite built. The man looks to be in his prime and healthy.

"Lady Ornesia, thank you for taking the time to see me," he says. "My name is Hugh and I make a living as a fisherman at the sea. I am in charge of a group of men and we typically bring back fish to sell at the port. However, the ship we have is old and ragged and we typically cannot venture out too far. If you could give me 50 gold coins I could put new sails on my ship, change the deck and oars, and bring back more product back. I believe it would be good not only for us but for the city as well should we be able to bring more food to the city."

And btw QM, do you have a twitter/scheduled session time or something you could give us to inform us of the next thread? I'm rather enjoying this one and have to leave soon.
>>
"I cannot give hand out money, but I can loan you some guards to help you repair your ships. I will instruct them to follow your orders as they would for me."

Hugh frowns and scratches his beard.

"Well m'lady I dunno if soldiers can really help me. I mean, it would be nice to get some help but I would have to babysit them. And I'm not sure if your men would appreciate being sent to take orders from me..."

He does make a few points. Do you take back the offer and give him his original plea, or stick with the guards helping him out?

"I see your point," you say thinking it over. "Alright then I shall give you the gold. It is to my hope that you will bring more fish for our city and open up our markets just a bit more."

"Of course, thank you m'lady!" he says happily. "With the repairs we can go further than the shallow waters. On the deeper parts of the water there are much more fish to find, I hear on some small islands there are crabs as well. If you ever like some free fresh sea products, please feel free to visit us. Our ship is called Bluefish and you only need ask for us at the port."

>-50 gold, 1950 in treasury.

"M'lady I'm a small farmer and I am here to talk about the local boys around my farm. Every few nights these boys get drunk and make loud noises at night. They sing and shout and it wakes not only me but the neighbors. Sometimes the animals get disturbed and my cows start moaning. "If they are disturbing the neighborhood at night, then they must be stopped. I will send guards to inform them that they must cease their night time activities or be punished by the law."

"Thank you, oh thank you m'lady," the woman says bowing. "I can finally sleep peacefully."

With the matter settled, you wonder if you should start a small civil force to keep things in matter. If people like this lady are going to keep coming to court for small problems such as these, it might take too much time.

You overview your guards. As of now you have 500 soldiers under your service. Since your kingdom hasn't been at war for a while they spend most of their time patrolling around the city and villages. They are definitely spread too thin to keep order everywhere.

What should you do?
>send out recruitment posters for more soldiers
>spend 250 gold in assembling a civic force that focuses on humanitarian aid and dealing with the smaller problems

Note that as you implement more policies, hire more soldiers, and create things that require expenses, they will cut in to the amount of taxes you get. Taxes you get will automatically be deducted from things like soldier payment, policies, and the like.

As of now you only have a vague idea of taxes you get. Right now it seems you will be getting around 500 gold monthly after expenses. Improving trade and your city could help more. Raising taxes would give you more income as well, though that would certainly make the people less happy.

Can we like, discuss this later?
With other people, who actually know things about running a kingdom?

We should probably go over all the numbers first

While you were intent on running things on your own for the start, you decide after some thoughts to keep any decisions that cut in to your funds withheld until discussed with the others. You dismiss the civic force idea for now.

A bit tired as dawn comes, you head to bed. The first few days of your job as a ruler is complete; from now on the days will go by faster. There is still much to be done and you are only the first stepping stone towards your legacy.
