Stage 95: Point of View, Point of Contention, Point of No Return.

Killing your own kind is always a waste, as far as you are concerned. Still renegades must be dealt with. Especially Water dragonettes and dragonnes, who always seem to think they know what is better for everybody. On the other hand, when you were told that Ryuu Ryukusa was working towards self transformation, you didn't expect her to have become a monster. You wouldn't have believed it if anyone had told you, but you've seen it for yourself. A limb that was grafted from something unnatural, her alien aura, her sheer power. Hopefully Hebiki Akari will stay out of your way it would be a tragedy to have to kill her, and her uncle would be....unhappy with you.

The sensation of Akari hitting the ground a three kilometers away is as clear to you as if she had landed a few feet away. You slowly peel another millimeter of ogre-steel from the edge of your sword with your thumbnail and wait until you feel her leap into the air again. She has been covering almost a kilometer a leap, with about half a kilometer give or take. Her 'Seven League Boots' skill is powerful, and fairly predictable. There are only a few places she can safely land, and she has to spot them during each leap. You've already scouted the area and know the best place for her to land nearby. Of course, you could also meet them in mid-air, which removes a few variables. It impossible to dodge, and you're much stronger than she is. Of course, there is also the tried and true challenge methodology.

Ryukusa is a talker, rather than a doer, but the fact that she is a Water dragonette means she would immediately sense any killing intent from you. So you can't turn to subterfuge. It's not really your style in any case. You prefer to be up front and plain in your efforts, even if that is technically an assassination. On the other hand, she could try and sway you, but she would realize you can't be. It's a difficult problem, and the sensation of Akari landing on the ground only two kilometers away leaves you with just a little time to decide.

>Choose only one.
[] Meet them mid-air, where Akari cannot dodge and Ryukusa won't allow you to attack Akari in her place.
[] Meet them where they land, since there are only two places for her to land well nearby and you can reach whichever one she aims for – her aim will be obvious by how she leaps.
[] Attack Ryukusa when they land immediately, avoiding any attempt to escape and bypassing the clever wordplay of that damn monster, so that your positions are clear.

>[] Meet them mid-air, where Akari cannot dodge and Ryukusa won't allow you to attack Akari in her place.
Man, the office politicking up in the Heavens must be fierce, what with line managers trying to interfere with the President's secretary coming back to work from disability leave.
>>
>>42578865
It probably works on bureaucracy and spite.
>>

>Ryukusa is a talker, rather than a doer

Well, this guy is as delusional as he is pretty
>>
>>42578921
Let's hope he's as incompetent as well!
>>
>>42578865

The guy is probably from Clan Ryo, which is more of an independant contractor than part of the bureaucracy.

Also, Ryukusa is the President's personal black ops. captain, not a secretary.
>>
[X] Meet them mid-air, where Akari cannot dodge and Ryukusa won't allow you to attack Akari in her place.

You stand up and stretch, your muscles creaking and your bones popping easily. You heft your sword to your shoulder and look up at the sky.

The main problem with this method is that your not actually attacking the leaper, but the passenger. On the other hand, you've seen first hand that Ryukusa values her brainwashed groupies more than most of her type do. She might actually care for them, deluding herself that the choice she is making really is the best for her and those around her. She's wrong of course; they always are. It's not honor that keeps the clans together, it's necessity. The world is a hostile place, and humans are making it more and more difficult for the spirit-children with every passing decade. Their self-involvement, even with the Emperor's power to keep them spiritually stable, always leads to suffering.

Still the two biggest advantages to this method are that Akari cannot dodge in any way, and Ryukusa is most likely going to defend Akari, to her own risk. On your own part, that does mean you won't be able to dodge either, but you're tougher than Akari and Ryukusa, even with the curse that Akari is functioning under after breaking the Crystal Mask. Why Lady Jinyuu would give something so precious to a child, you haven't the slightest idea. Still, even if you miss, you have a much better range than Akari – they can't exactly outrun you.
>>
>>42579017
So the final decision is the method of your attack.

>Choose only one.
[] A literally direct assault from below, using all the speed and power at your command to drive the attack in a line to your target and at the very least separate Ryukusa and Akari.
[] Striking from above in silence, leaping over them both and coming down from high above them. Perhaps not quite as accurate, but if Akari using a princess carry (which is the only thing that would make sense) there will be no way that Ryukusa can do anything save attempt a block.
[] Meet them head on, matching their velocity and speed; it's an obvious maneuver, one that lets them know you're coming for them, but Akari's only defense would be to drop Ryukusa....and you're pretty sure Ryukusa won't allow that.
>>

RIP this dude
>>
>>42579006

Well, he seems to have some ammount of tactical skills, and to be a pretty good fighter compared to his peers, but his reasoning and perceptiveness appear to be very poor.

I mean, from his internal monologue alone (which, to be fair, is somewhat unfair), I'd be more worried to have to face the water dragonette who tried to spook Ryukusa with sea snakes.
>>
>>42579007
Secretary doesn't just mean "taker of notes and organizer of schedules".
It can also mean a person deputized to act with the full authority of the person they represent in a given capacity or field.
That's why the Secretary of State is, while not the President, is still a big deal.
This depends on the corporate culture, of course.
Given the age of thy Heavens and of the position, I think they use the older meaning.

I wonder: is it possible to open a Barrier around yourself when attacked, excluding your opponent, use the difference of time flow to dodge, and then drop the Barrier?
>>

It's so interesting to see alternative perspectives. I wonder how much is speculation and how much is just lies. Based on the time-frame, it's possible it's all just the former.
>>
>>42579592

The dude seems to have both witnessed Ryukusa's behavior frist-hand and to have a poor opinions of Water dragonettes. I'd say it's his interpretation of what he saw and was told, with the "becoming a monster" part being mostly lies to make him attack
>>
>>42579577

I would assume that there are a couple of issues with doing that.
1 - a strong opponent could forcibly include themselves in the barrier
2 - Creating a barrier to move a bit then dropping it would likely be an excessive waste of energy for what it achieves, especially considering the number of abilities and skills which could fill a similar role.

But a good thought none-the-less.
>>
[X] Striking from above in silence, leaping over them both and coming down from high above them. Perhaps not quite as accurate, but if Akari using a princess carry (which is the only thing that would make sense) there will be no way that Ryukusa can do anything save attempt a block.

You crouch, and consider the best angle for the attack. True, the direct assault is effective, and could be quite devastating, but a miss – unlikely as it is – would leave you traveling a greater distance than you feel comfortable with them having on you. The head-on approach, as honorable as it is, would also let Akari and Ryukusa both react or respond, and that's exactly what you don't want at this point. So the stealthy death-from-above it is; sometimes simplicity is truly the most effective method of dealing with a problematic mission. And both of these girls are problematic in their own ways.

Slowly you crouch, feeling the earth and stone around you, under you, and feeling her land. A kilometer and a half this time. Not out of the range you expected from her. Akari still only has two landing points. The trees are making things difficult for her, you suspect, as they will for you when you land, since neither of those two places are going to be in your arc. She leaps, choosing the further of the two landing points, which gives you a very nice diagonal angle of descent to intercept her with. You close your eyes, imagining her flight, and with a swirl of dust you are in flight, en route to the kill.

>>42579853
Akari didn't actually expect you to make her carry you, but you weren't kidding when you told her she was going to carry you there. As fast as you are, you'd outdistance her in seconds, and so it is much faster if she uses her powerful jumps to get both of you to the island as quickly as possible. Of course, there was a little time spent indulging her fascination and getting her calmed enough that she wouldn't be distracted by having you in her arms while she was leaping a mile or so at a time.

You had no idea exactly how much your enjoyment of haute couture flipped her switches, really. And it really, really does.

Typically, you only get the view of the world you have in her arms at the moment when you're in a Barrier, and everything is washed out and grey. By starlight and Tsukuyomi's light, the world is beautiful from up here, even though you only have a few tens of seconds to enjoy it.

“Do you feel okay, aniki?” she asks through the rushing wind you suspect she's concerned about your blood pooling when she leaps, something you already thought of from the previous time she leaped with you in her arms.

“I'm fine – it's beautiful up here!” It is too. Only a few clouds lingering after you summoned them, and it's too early for the fogs to be rolling in from the ocean. She lands with a practiced crouch, easing you down rather than landing with a bone-jarring thud like you first expected. It has more to do with her power stemming from the earth, than it does with her technique. “We're more than halfway there,” you mention to her, the map she showed you in your head as clearly as if you'd drawn it on your arm. Which you didn't do, as that would interfere with your hug.

She smiles, and leaps skyward once more, aiming for one of the few places she can make an effective landing. The lift off takes some effort on your part, as her own body can withstand a few hundred G-forces. You have to actively keep your blood where it's supposed to be for the first few hundred feet, or you'd black out. It couldn't actually harm you, no, but you like being awake.

….especially when you catch glimpses of people darting into the air faster than Akari can.

“Did you see....”

You stop the sentence short, because it's obvious what's about to happen. An ambush, by someone who is incredibly skilled, and incredibly confident. You only have instants to react, which for you feels like forever.

[X] He has to be coming from above – an uppercut with your left hand might change the way he sees things!

With Akari still rising, and your enemy falling down towards you, you are in the unenviable position of having to make a defense from a position of literally zero leverage. At least, that ~would~ be the case for almost anyone else. You have two advantages that no one could have possible expected: an invulnerable left arm, and the absolute trust of your niji-chan. Well, three, if you count being immortal.

On the other hand, there are plenty of ways to kill an immortal, and most spirit-children have access to several. So you'd much rather not test your immortality at all and react as though your life is on the line. With a single word, “Ambush,” you let Akari-niji-chan know that you're about to pull some stupendous nonsense out of your grab-bag of insane tricks. And this one is a fuckin' bad one.

Whipping a pair of long chained handcuffs out of ~Nowhere~ you whip it against Akari's wrist, hard enough to close it. She stiffens, not out of shock or fear, but so you can use her as a point of solidity to work off of. You glance up at the dragonne falling towards you – he's bare chested, with a lot of heavy looking gold ornaments, and a long-handed, short bladed Chinese dao (more of a cleaver than a sword, for all that he's holding it like a two-handed sword) – and calculate the velocity and angles in your head instantly.
>>
>>42580552
>he doesn't even Dragonette
>>
>>42580589
There's no two ways about it, you and Akari-niji-chan are going to take a fall. But at least it will be a fall under your control. Pushing yourself off her shoulders and out of her carry with your arms and falling backwards, you straighten your legs for an instant....and then bend them, catching her other arm under your knees. The momentum causes you to flip over so you are once more right side up, and then you tug on the chain. Akari takes the hint immediately, and even as the dragonne – SHIT! It's Sakomu-sensei! A STONE dragonne! – even as Sakomu-sensei reaches you both, she hurls you up towards him, assuming the direction he is in by the tug you gave being opposite him.

You wrap your right hand around the handle of Okurimono-sama, but it is your left hand you lead with, extending just as he swings. The grimace he makes is fleeting, merely a twitch of his lips, but it's enough; he redirects his swing into your fist and he's definitely unhappy about the fiasco you've created between yourselves. You don't alter your aim for his solar plexus, and the jarring shock to your left arm aches deep into your skeleton, slivers of sapphire and chunks of hot metal exploding from the impact.

While ordinarily it should have driven you into the ground with the force of a meteor strike, the fact that you took the impact on your left arm gives you a reprieve by having transformed the momentum and force into heat. Yay for supernatural strength and invulnerability. He's only tossed back a few feet, and then falls towards the ground twisting so he'll land feet first. You're falling as well, but not flung backwards as you might have been if you'd blocked with anything else.
>>
>>42580589
>you let Akari-niji-chan know that you're about to pull some stupendous nonsense out of your grab-bag of insane tricks.

Yui has probably been taking notes of all the ones we've used to far
>>
But that's why you handcuffed Akari-niji-chan. You glance down and then yank her towards you with the chain, catching her as well as changing your angle and velocity. While you are still going to hit trees, it's not nearly as many of them. You're not falling quickly yet either.

“Was that...?”

“Yeah.”

“Aniki....”

“I know. We're going to be hitting branches, but only branches.”

“....kamidamnit, aniki!” Wow, that's about as pissed as you've ever heard her. They're wood, and she's not going to be invulnerable to that. In fact, shes going to be downright helpless considering they're alive.

[+] ….what a bunch of interesting ideas...
[Y] Situation FUBAR, but luckily, you're Clever and Dangerous.

Despite Akari's panic, not all is lost. In fact, you think you have a lot of ways to cope.

She's going to hate all of them.

Too bad.

You snap the cuff about her wrist with your left hand. “Sorry, Akari-niji-chan, but I didn't know it was him until he was on us. Any other kid of dragonne or dragonette I could have handled.” Which was probably why it was him of course. You grab a pillow out of ~Nowhere~ and press it to her midriff, wrapping the chain around her and the pillow with one hand and twisting the links into a knot with your left hand. “When you get close enough, use some kunai or knives or rocks and break off anything in your way. Here. You know how to use this?”

You push the para-sail into her arms and continue before she can say anything. “Good. All you have to do is land safely. He's not interested in you, he's just after me. I'll survive the fall – if worse comes to worse I'll make a Barrier and fly down, even if the kami get pissed.” Her eyes fairly blaze in alarm, because the last thing you want is to face Sakomu-sensei in a Barrier, even in a forest. He might not be an oni, but oni don't normally fight in Barriers either.

“When you do land, try and distract him long enough for me to heal completely.” You glance down. Three hundred feet. Time's up. You kiss her in the single second you have left....and then kick her as hard as you can in the direction opposite of down.
>>

….which means you slam into the branches and the ground harder, but it was worth it to save Akari. When you stand up, you're a mess of bruises and scratches, but otherwise you're actually pretty intact. Aside from the broken ribs, fractured skill, and torn ligaments in your shoulder. More importantly you aren't hearing Sakomu-sensei yet. If you're here, those stars there....he should be off to that side.

You take a moment to look at your left hand, which is actually bleeding, a line across your third finger joints like you'd punched a blade. Wait, you did, technically. The shattered sapphire is repairing too, though slowly, more slowly than the broken bones. The bleeding is thick and dark, and only stops when the healing is finished. You glance up and see the para-sail drifting off to the side. Some distance away.

Sakomu-sensei was one of Oba-san's personal bodyguards. He personally forged about half the weapons the main warriors of the clan use, and he's extremely skilled in combat of course. Every promising warrior got personal time with him, and that's almost every Water dragonne and dragonette, you included. He was strict but fair, and all business.

It's that last bit that has you worried.
>>
>>42581868
He's probably a few hundred years old, but he's never disobeyed any of the leaders of the Ryo clan that you've ever heard rumor of, and that makes him extremely unpredictable in a Barrier. As powerful as you are, you'd be a massive disadvantage in a fight against him....unless being a demigod has changed you that much. On the other hand, you've changed enough that you might be able to defeat him outside of a barrier. One thing is absolutely certain – he won't underestimate you ever again.

Your bones are all almost knit, and the ligaments and bruises are definitely gone, when you hear him approaching slowly from the direction of the ocean. He's probably already felt the vibrations of your heartbeat through the ground.

[X] Fill the area with fog since you can't sense his water personally.

You leap up into a tree and land lightly in the branches. It will counter his sense of vibrations, at least. Filling the area with a light fog is easily done, and you can now feel where he is within it, moving towards you still. Not directly, but close enough that you move through a few other trees. That makes him pause; he's listening for you now.

You slide Wakaba's gift from her sheath and that prompts him to hunker down. He has exceptional hearing, apparently, because you didn't make that much noise. He pulls another weapon – similar to the one you utterly destroyed – out of ~Nowhere~ and waits silently for one minute. Two minutes. Three. Long enough that you're fully healed, though still low on shen in comparison to him.

Gunshots explode some distance away: Akari clearing branches out of her way. Good. The para-sail rustles leaves and makes soft crashing noises. While you haven't the foggiest idea if she can counter his vibration sense, she knows how hers can be countered, so most likely she'll be up in the trees too.

[] Take the high road and get closer to him while she's still making noise.
[] Head to where she is while you have the opportunity.
[] See if he'll talk at least, perhaps postpone for a formal duel.
[] ….cut down a bunch of branches yourself and make the terrain as much a weapon as you can in your favor.
[] Contact Akari through the Void and see if you can get some kind, any kind of plan together.

[X] Contact Akari through the Void and see if you can get some kind, any kind of plan together.
[+] CAREFULLY center yourself in the Void.

You use the distraction - and more importantly the vibrations – of Akari's landing to your advantage, and leap in and out of the trees several times, covering your landings with those of the branches you slices out of the trees using Okurimono-sama. The heavy thuds and crashes, not to mention the rattling of leaves and the rushing air seems to work well at masking your movements as you leap in and out of the trees.

When Akari has landed, you've turned the forest floor around you into a quagmire of fallen branches, leaves, and stout limbs stretching for almost a hundred feet in every direction , with you now off-center of it. The fallen branches and leaves won't protect you from his vibration sense – only live wood will do that – but it does mean you have the advantage of terrain and a bounty of weapons and tools at your disposal now.

The worrisome part is that even though he is aware of your new advantage, he hasn't simply left yet, or entered the earth.

….

Which makes no sense whatsoever.

Unless....

It's a decoy. It would have to be. Wouldn't it?

You lean against the tree your sitting it, pressing your back to the cool wood, and close your eyes, taking deep, slow breaths. Meditating, breathes slow, steady. The Void is the source of thought and calm, of mind and the ephemeral. It has no great strengths against Stone, but it has no great weaknesses either, save that Stone can overact the Void, much as Wood was used to overact your meridians by Hidesato. Calm, calm, calm. [X] Contact Yui-niji-chan, get her here.

As much as you'd like to have the most competent of your family here, it would require taking Yui-niji-chan away as well. That would be leaving your principle – and wife – nearly unguarded. On the other hand, she might have intel....

(Yui.) She wakes up instantly.

(Wake up Kiku-chan. Tell her Ryuu Sakomu is here to kill me.) You could have tried to wake her yourself, but you suspect it would have been useless – shes a priestess, after all. Yui's sense of agreement is immediate and total, and she doesn't freak out or pester you. Definitely underrated, your niji-chan.

Kiku's voice is in your mind moments later. (Is it just you and Akari?)

(Yes.)

(What is he doing?)

(Waiting.)

You can feel her nervous tension increase. It's not a pleasant feeling. (How defensible are you?) The impressions and understanding you give her are far more detailed and succinct that words would be. (The branches and leaves aren't going to stop him well. They're weapons only, not deterrent.) She's worried. Really worried.

(Would Yui even the odds?)

To her credit, she considers the question seriously. (Yes, aniki. I would be better, but....)

(Akari must protect you. Stay right there as long as you can.) You feel Kiki's sleeping consciousness slip from your awareness as well. One minute. Three. Five. Then you feel it. Strength, flowing into your body. Power....Shen.

They're praying.

You close your eyes, reveling in the sensation....and you can feel them, their love, their affection, their belief in you. Er Yin-sensei's consciousness fades from your awareness....then Jinyuu-onee-sama's. More power, more love, more hope. More strength. Your head feels clearer, your mind and body strengthening quickly. The world comes back into focus....and so does your mind. Your scattered wits solidify, and you return their prayers with your love, your awareness, your gratitude.

You open your eyes to the Void and SEE.

Power, flowing through the air, the living forces, the disruptions your work with the blade has caused, the strength that will come from that decay, the life that will sprout where it could not before. You can see the breath moving in Akari's presence, Sakumo's breaths, slow, steady. His immense strength, tied to the earth, grounded in it. The prayers, floating through he void to you, your own power, growing. You can see Yuuhi's ghostly form....her ikiryo, her living spirit, floats before you, her hands touching yours, her eyes closed as she channels their prayers directly to you.

He's waiting because he has nothing to lose and everything to gain. He's not using Barrier Combat because he isn't sure of your capabilities inside a Barrier. Otherwise he'd use that and try and overwhelm you with age and skill. Here, in the physical world, he ~has~ age and skill. He's older than you...but not as old as he believes he is. Nor are you the same person you were two hundred and some odd years ago. You have other, more dangerous skills now, ones Clan Ryo is not privy to.

[X] Create a Barrier – take away the few physical advantages he has despite his greater experience.

(Akari-niji-chan, tell me about your techniques.) You're so much calmer, so much more relaxed, and your lack of tension eases her tension measurably. The prayers might have helped too, if she was praying.

(Most of our techniques center on our strength and toughness. Our dragon form is all sharp edges and terrible blades, and even our least physical techniques are centered on being inscrutable and unfathomable. We're really the very opposite of everything you are. Our elemental techniques involve commanding earth and stone.) You remember that – the last time you met Anonimous you fought an oni-child with that ability. All very physical, and what isn't physical is designed to foil your ability to deduce nearly everything. (But he may have different techniques than I do, too.)

That is possible – he's probably going to prefer a weapon than use Akari's open hand techniques. The elemental powers will be almost useless against you in a Barrier, being able to fly. So, most likely, dragon techniques, weapon and strength. You don't think he's the kind to be inscrutable, patient as he is. He seems far more interested in direct confrontation, regardless of how long it takes.

Closing your Void eyes, you open your Water eyes, and things fall into place even faster. The reason Kiku-chan warned you would would only be a weapon is because with his level of strength he would just move through it and push it aside – dead branches aren't a threat except as weapons used against him. The living trees would be a hindrance, but that's why he'd carry a weapon. It would be less effective, but not IN-effective.

With sharpened clarity comes sharpened memory. (Akari. He was with Musumi Kanako when we met them on the way to deal with the foreigners. His true nature hidden, but he was there.) He must have been one of the ones who broke off early. If Kanako had known he was there, you have very little doubt she would have pushed for a fight. A simple disguise is sometimes best when you have as vast a reputation as his.

(No wonder he found us.) She considers and then says something which is a little surprising. (Perhaps you should make a formal duel after all. At least you would have the opportunity to come to terms and see what techniques he would choose.)

(....if it comes to that, I'd rather have you fighting at my side, Akari. Even against someone like him. Especially someone like him.) Her blush isn't visible to you, but you can feel it well enough now.

Using the wind and fog, you swirl your voice around him. “Ryuu Sakomu, greetings. I'm afraid you've caught me at a bad time. Is there anything particular you would be interested in aside from my head? I think Oba-san wants it attached still.” It's a good bet. Hard to possess a corpse and get any real use out of it. You think. Actually, you're not sure. Is that Chinese black magic? Oh, right, bad guy!

He speaks in a normal tone of voice, sure that the wind will carry his voice to you. Ohhh, clever bastard, he was going to home in on where his voiced ended up with that sharp hearing of his! You'll have to remember that trick! As a workaround, you make HIS voice echo all around the debris-strewn glade as well.

“Ryuu Ryu....Ryukusa.” Yes, that earned you some grudging respect. “I am afraid I am here to put an end to your renegade activities. I have very little doubt you'll renounce them, so I must take matters in hand.” Yep, he definitely heard that speech.

“I see. Ending the problem before it starts sort of thing. Well, in that case we have a problem. You're certain there's no way we can end this amicably?” Even as you speak, he's sinking into the earth and moving forward, sliding into the ground and moving towards the center of the destruction you caused. Too bad you're not there.

“If you were to renounce your renegade activities and return to Clan Ryuu, then we could end this here and now. I would even accept your word for it.” He would to – he knows you're a demigod and your word would be binding. You stand up on the branch and take the nodachi in both hands. He slides deeper into her earth, only his head showing. “Be we both know you cannot do this thing.”

You don't bother answering – he can't hear you, as he sinks into the ground, vanishing without a trace. Hunting you.

Too bad he's going to find you.

Thanks for running XS.

As a side note, I have mentioned that I will remember for the players things that are relevant to the situations Ryukusa is in - she is a Clever dragonette after all. Strength from prayers is not somethign she should indulge in often, but on rare occasion, especially after she's earned them, it can be a lifesaver.

Well, he is an adult. Ryukusa is still young, despite her horrible experience.

It didn't help that Ryukusa was severely out of Shen - it's not just life force, there is a physical component to it for spirit-children.

Thank you for running, XS. Be careful, the temperature's going up after the rain, and the combo of that and the winds could start the fires up again.

Oh, the fires weren't subdued by the rain, sadly. I live in a position between thee two massive fires, and the smoke meets in the middle. But hopefully the next few days will be okay. I'm hoping for monday run.
