On this morning, you awaken to the sounds of shouting outside. The royal family’s elite soldiers, the Edenian Knights, are preparing for something. Sunlight pours in through the nearby window, obscured by magenta drapes, made especially for you. As you stretch your limbs, you feel a distinct absence in your bed; you fell asleep with Tanya at your side, but the limber and acrobatic edenian is now gone, like most mornings after your sweaty entanglements. In a way, it makes you feel strange to not be able to wake up to see her. It hurts.

Were he here, would Kaito do the same? Could anyone stand to wake up next to you with a face like yours?

You shake your head and push aside such thoughts. It has been difficult adjusting to life here in Edenia. You mustn’t fall prey to self-pity. You are a strong warrior, capable of killing anyone who would dare come against you.

And yet, you do not feel like the princess you are hailed as.

Heading towards the window, you stick your head out so as not to alert anyone to your naked form. You look out and see a column of Edenian Knights marching alongside the palace, conducting sweeps of the area.

Nearby, the emerald-leotard-clad assassin, Jade, is speaking to the captain of the knights, Shendu. Something must have happened in the night to cause this kind of mobilization, but you did not attend last night's festivities, a contest of martial might between Edenia, Earthrealm and Outworld.

Seeing the Earthrealmers brought up painful and conflicting memories of Kaito, so you kept to yourself until Tanya came up to visit you.

Where is she now, you wonder?

You hear someone enter. It is one of the palace handmaidens. When she sees your nude form standing near the window, she immediately respectfully averts her eyes (or perhaps out of fear of your frightening teeth).

"A thousand pardons, princess," she says. "Is there anything I may do for you?"

"What's happening outside?" you ask her.

Still keeping her head turned, she answers, "There was an attack last night. Something was stolen from the queen's chambers and some men were killed. The Earthrealmers were attacked. The... The sorcerer is gone."

You look at her with curious eyes before turning them back outside. Who would sneak into the palace to free the demon, Quan Chi? One of his own, no doubt. Perhaps Scorpion, or the one clad entirely in black...

You turn and take your veil off of the nearby marble table and place it around your face, securing it behind your ears. "Prepare my clothing for the day," you tell her as you walk by her towards the bath.

"Yes, my lady," she says and goes to work.

You close the door behind you and prepare the water. It is warm and soothing, and you take your time washing yourself, but do not take too long to do so. You're curious to hear from others about the attacks that occurred last night.

You step out of the bath when you are finished, entering your room to find the handmaiden waiting for you. She assists you in dressing and doing your hair up into a simple yet elegant ponytail. She excuses herself as you take off your veil and clean your teeth; it takes some time, as there is quite a bit to clean.

You pause after you are done and look nearby to a small chest. Inside are two weapons gifted to you by your adoptive father, Shao Kahn, the former Emperor of Outworld. A pair of sai blades, enchanted with great vicious power.

You have not touched them since coming to Edenia except for a rare few times when you felt the need to practice with them.

Approaching the chest, you open it and take out your sai. They feel comfortable in your hands and you give them an experimental twirl.

You should a neck to stab them into and lick the blood off the blade.

You shake your head again, suppressing the murderous urges that were given to you when you were born. You slide the weapons into the sash around your waist and close your eyes.

You are not surrounded by enemies here. Merely having the weapons makes you feel as though you need to use them. You quickly busy yourself with other thoughts, such as where to go from here and who to talk to.

Approaching the balcony once more, you stride out onto it and look over the side into the palace courtyard. You can see the Edenian Knights searching the grounds for evidence, looking behind bushes and underneath benches. The main gate has been sealed shut and four guards are posted at it.

As Jade and Shendu speak to each other, you see that she is approached by one of the Earthrealmers; Sonya Blade. Your history with her extends to some of the earliest moments of your life, as Shao Kahn planned to marry her and merge the realms instead of through kombat. You helped him nearly complete this task before his defeat at the hands of Liu Kang.

Speaking of which, the shaolin monk himself now comes into view, walking alongside your sister Kitana. They walk quickly and say very little to each other as they approach Jade, Sonya and Captain Shendu.

As you stand along the balcony looking at them, Kitana scans the courtyard and briefly looks up at you, her gaze connecting with your own before she turns back to speak to the others.

Closing your eyes, you focus and teleport down into the courtyard in a flash of purple-pink energy. As you reappear on the grass, two nearby knights go silent.

You have that effect on people. Rumors about the "monster princess" have kept most from approaching you or speaking in your presence.

Jade notices your approach first. She alerts Kitana with a quick flash of her green eyes and a tilt of the head in your direction. Kitana excuses herself from Liu and the others and approaches you.

"...Mileena. It is surprising to see you out of your room."

"Sister," you say to her as you both stand several feet apart from each other. "I heard that Quan Chi has escaped."

Kitana's eyes briefly scan you up and down before she replies, "Yes, that is true. We're currently conducting an investigation and questioning everyone who was not... accounted for last night."

Those last few words of her voice seem to imply suspicion of you. It's not very surprising, coming from her, given your history.

You place a hand on your hip. "Well sister, I was with Tanya last night. We were conversing in my chambers."

Kitana's eyes narrow every so slightly. You know that she does not like being identified as your sister. "Perhaps you were. Tanya and her family are still here, as none have been permitted to leave the palace grounds until they have been questioned by father."

You look at her as Jade approaches her from behind. Your "father"--that being the soul of the edenian King Jerrod, currently trapped in the soul construct of Ermac and keeping the other souls under control--is likely using his telepathy to read the minds of others to detect if any are guilty.

You are not afraid to speak to him. He was the first to approach you in Outworld and offer you support after Shao Kahn's failed invasion of Earthrealm.

Kitana looks at Jade and nods. "Jade, if you would, please take Mileena to the throne room to see my father."

Jade nods. "Of course."

As Kitana parts, she gives you one final look before rejoining the others. Much like yourself, she isn't quite sure what to make of you being part of the royal family.

Jade approaches, one hand idly drifting over her hip to gently brush against the metal rod hanging from her belt, which you know from experience can turn into a deadly bo staff at will instantly.

"Please come with me... princess."

Jade, being Kitana's bodyguard and her oldest friend, clearly shares the distrust that Kitana has for you.

"I suppose I would be the first one you suspect, wouldn't I?" you say to her as you and she head towards the throne room.

"You isolate yourself from the rest of the royal family. This makes it difficult to know where you are and rule you out," she replies.

"A tactful way to dance around what you're truly thinking," you say to her. She stops and turns around.

"Mileena, everyone knows what you are. Why you were made. Your refusal to appear the court and entertain your guests with the rest of your family doesn't help disprove what people assume."

You look her in her green eyes and say, "I'm alone in my room, and alone when I sit in court, with the way the rest of you treat me. Take me to father. He'll see that I am not lying, unlike the rest of you."

Jade says no more as she leads you into the throne room. Here, Queen Sindel and King Jerrod in the form of Ermac sit upon two central thrones while various subjects fill the room. Guards flank the thrones as Sindel and Jerrod question them.

Jade walks up to the queen and whispers in her ear. Sindel places a hand on her husband's arm and points to you. He turns his blaring green eyes upon you and beckons you forth.

You stand before the thrones and you hear whispers throughout the room.

"Mileena, my daughter," Jerrod says, making a point to call you as such, "I would like to know where you were last night."

"I was in my room, with Tanya."

Sindel raises an eyebrow. "And what were you two doing, exactly?"

Along the edge of the room, you see Tanya with her family; her parents, two siblings and niece. She parts her lips as if to say something, but keeps silent.

"Tanya, come forth," she then beckons after you are initially silent. "Is this true? Were you in Mileena's chambers?"

"Yes, my queen," she says.

"And what were you two doing?" Sindel repeats her earlier question.

"Talking, my queen."

You look up at Jerrod and say, "Talking. We were just talking. Tanya has been a good friend to me."

Jerrod looks at you and you cannot help but wonder if he is reading your mind. He puts a hand to his forehead as though he has a headache, but speaks, "She is telling the truth. She knows nothing about Quan Chi's disappearance."

Sindel looks back at you, her expression lightening somewhat. "I trust my husband's judgment. Mileena, I am sorry you were suspected."

You avert your eyes slightly. "I understand... my queen."

The room is silent for a moment. You and Sindel both know that you are not yet on a mother/daughter level of a relationship. You look at Jade, standing near her, who maintains a neutral face.

Jerrod dismisses you and allows you to return to the crowd. Tanya goes back to her family.

Making your way back outside and out of view of those whispering court nobles, you step back out into the courtyard. Sonya has departed and is being escorted through the main gate by two guards, and alongside her is Johnny Cage. Kitana, meanwhile, is still speaking with Liu Kang and Captain Shendu, while the shaolin's own companions Kung Lao, Bo' Rai Cho and Li Mei stand nearby.

You look around the courtyard at all the knights searching for clues and close your eyes, sniffing the air. Your tarkatan genes allow you a much greater sense of smell and you pick up a scent that does not seem normal to Edenia's normally sweet scents, but seems strangely familiar.

You approach Kitana. "Sister," you get her attention. She turns to look at you. "I smell something strange."

Kitana takes a sniff of the air. "I smell nothing."

"You do not have my nose," you remind her.

"No... I suppose I do not. What do you smell?"

"Something familiar. I cannot quite place it, but it does not belong here. Come with me."

Kitana looks at Liu and they share a brief glance before they both come along. You pause every now and then to sniff the air before continuing onwards.

You come to a stone bench. The smell is strongest here. You kneel down and inspect the ground, finding a strange discoloration to the grass. "This is a mixture of vomit and something else," you say, your nose scrunching up as it grows particularly foul.

Jade approaches you three then. "Princess, I saw something here last night. Captain Shendu was... ill, for a moment."

"So this is his vomit?" Kitana says.

"And something else," you remind her, sticking your finger in it and lifting it up to the light. Everyone looks and sees that it is black, like tar or oil.

"What is that?" Kitana asks.

You sniff it more closely. "It is foul, like a corpse," you tell her. "I have smelt this before... In Shao Kahn's palace. I fought an intruder in a strange metal mask who could run faster than I could see. I fought him alongside another warrior, one of Quan Chi's assassins. His skin was as dark as his clothing, and his eyes glowed white."

"I know that one," Liu Kang says. "Kuai Liang, Sub-Zero, told me that his brother Bi-Han had been turned into a wraith in service to the sorcerer."

"So he was here," Kitana says. "Last night. But how did he make Shendu vomit?"

"The captain complained of a bad drink," Jade says. "I believe we may still have the same bottle."

You ask Kitana to summon Captain Shendu over. He admits to the act, and that he had another guard who helped him. Kitana asks him to go find the bottle of wine and then turns back to you. "Do you smell anything else?"

"Here, I can only smell this," you say, pointing to the fetid pile in the grass. "We need to search elsewhere."

A guard walks up to Kitana. "My princess, I beg your pardon, but a woman from one of the nearby villages is saying that her husband never returned home last night. He is usually not one to vanish, and he has done just that: there is absolutely no trace of him."

Kitana thanks and dismisses the guard. "This does not bode well," she says. "How can we protect our people from such an assassin?"

"The dungeons, perhaps," you suggest. Kitana nods and you, she, Jade and Liu Kang all head into the palace and walk down the stairs in the dark dungeons. Guards move aside for you as you approach Quan Chi's cell. Inside, you see the broken shackles and manacles, as well as the destroyed anti-magic runes on the floor.

You can pick up faint hints of the same smell as before, as well as something else. "There's more here," you say. "Not the smell of the demon, or the wraith... but something else. I can't quite make it out. It's somewhat... flowery in nature."

Jade kneels next to where the runes were blasted. "These were not destroyed by magic. Something blasted them away like sanding paper..."

Liu Kang looks around, but finds nothing, as does Kitana, who speaks to some of the guards. She returns a moment later. "Four guards were posted here last night. They all disappeared. The two guards that were posted at the top of the stairs have also disappeared."

You sniff again, committing the smell to memory. You then open your eyes a bit and look towards Liu. You approach him and sniff him, detecting the smell on him. He looks strangely at you. "What?" he asks.

She looks back at Liu. "Well, he wasn't in here. He was with me all night."

"All night, sister?" you ask, raising an eyebrow.

She looks back at you. "As long as you were with Tanya."

The two of you say nothing more as you turn back to the others. Kitana tells Liu about the scent, not making anything more of it, but asking him if he may know anything about it.

"I do not," he admits.

You fold your arms and think about what to do next.

Moving out of the dungeons, you proceed upstairs and try to sniff out the source of the scent. But you cannot; there are simply too many other smells to be found here amidst the nobles and other guests.

As you move upstairs further, to the second story, you pick up the original smell of the wraith from the queen's chamber. Kitana tells you that a handmaiden was found inside with a wounded hand; she claims to have seen some kind of monster.

"That sounds like our wraith," Jade says.

At that moment, Captain Shendu walks upstairs, holding a bottle of dark red wine. "My lady, this is the bottle I drank from last night." He hands it to Kitana, who hands it to you. You smell the lip of the bottle. Amongst the scent of the wine you pick up the same scent of the wraith. You nod at Kitana.

"So it was the wraith," he says. "That must be how he lifted the key to the sorcerer's cell from me... My lady, I am sorry. I have failed in my duties."

Kitana forgives him and sends him on his way; there was little he could have done to stop the wraith's efforts to free his master. She folds her arms and thinks out loud. "So, he came here to get the sorcerer, then left by attacking our Earthrealm allies and stealing their Nethership. Elder Gods only know where they could be by now, but I'd wager that Quan Chi is already back in the Netherrealm."

Liu Kang looks concerned. "We should warn Sub-Zero that his brother rescued Quan Chi."

Kitana agrees with him. "It is best that you return to Earthrealm for now, Liu Kang. I will contact you when we have more information."

"Are you certain?" he asks her, and she nods. "We will handle things here in Edenia, for now. Help your fellow Earthrealmers who are now stranded here back to your home."

He bows his head to the princess and turns to leave.

You look at Kitana and ask her what her plan is. "I do not intend to idly sit by while the Netherrealm attacks us. But I must ask the king and queen."

Jade follows her downstairs, and you do the same. In the throne room, you report your findings to the King and Queen, who then bring you, Jade and Kitana into a private chamber so that you may speak without unwanted ears prying in.

Kitana approaches her parents about the subject directly. "I want to go to the Netherrealm and collect intelligence on Quan Chi's current whereabouts," she says.

This surprises everyone, but especially you. "I forbid it," Sindel says. "The Netherrealm is far too dangerous."

"I will accompany her, my queen," Jade is quick to jump in. "With our skills, we will be undetected."

"I do not doubt your prowess of stealth and assassination," Sindel says, "but I hesitate to send you into that accursed hell."

She looks to Jerrod for support. "I will consent to this," he decides after a moment, "but only if you are joined by Mileena."

"Jerrod!" Sindel objects. "We cannot send all three of them! What if something happens?"

"Three are better than two," he says. "We have a way to send all three of you into the Netherrealm, and a way to bring you back when you feel you have completed your mission. I will not allow the Brotherhood of Shadow to freely attack my people without responding in kind."

Kitana looks at you, but then back to Jerrod. "I will follow your orders, father."

"And I, my king," Jade adds.

They both look at you. "I will go," you say. "And I will make sure we all return in one piece."

Jerrod nods. "Then prepare. I will send you when the afternoon sun reaches its highest point."

Heading to the courtyard confirms this. They are leaving together in a group, and you approach them and call out Tanya's name. Her niece Nadia is the one to get her attention and she turns around, quickly moving up to you.

"My princess," she says in a hushed tone. "What news?"

You quickly explain most of the results of your investigation, including your forthcoming trip to the Netherrealm.

"Be careful," she says, moving in for a hug.

As you hug her, you detect something strange. You take a sniff and detect the same flowery scent upon her that you did before in the cell and on Liu Kang. What does it mean?

A second whiff tells you that it may not have originated on her, but rubbed off somehow, much like Liu Kang.

She smiles as she parts from you, giving you a lingering touch on your hand before she moves back to leave with her family. You watch her go, feeling slightly empty from her refusal to do anything with you in public at the risk of others knowing about your relationship.

Jerrod must have known you both were lying. You wonder why he lied himself and told Sindel that you were telling the truth.

Heading back into the palace, you continue to search for any more signs of the scent, but so far, you have no luck. Heading into the throne room, you find Jerrod by himself, standing near one of the thrones.

"Father?"

He turns to look at you, his green eyes slightly surprised. "Mileena," he says, stepping down onto the main floor. "I hope you aren't angry with me."

"Of course not, why would I be?"

"I do not wish I had to send you to such a vile place," he admits. "But Kitana is set on going... and she rarely changes her mind. Much like with you."

You tilt your head a bit. "Father?"

"I can sense your emotions," he says, wincing a bit and putting a hand to his head. "I know you are having trouble fitting in. It's partially why I am sending you to go with her... So you two can grow closer, fighting on the same side with each other. That is why I hope you are not angry with me."

"No," you shake your head. "I'm not angry. But I don't know if Kitana will ever look at me like a sister."

He places a hand on your shoulder. "My child... You are as much my daughter as she is, no matter how you were created. She's lived longer, is more set in her ways, but you are young and experiencing life for the first time in so many ways. I'm envious, you know. An old soul like mine tends to grow weary of the smaller things in life after so long. But to experience them for the first time like you get to..."

You wonder if he is referring to your affair with Tanya, but he says no more on the subject.

You swear it on Shao Kahn's grave that you will undo the vile dark magic that he used to create Ermac and free King Jerrod, even if it's the last thing you do.

As you part from him, you head up to your room to gather a few final things and change into a more combat-ready outfit. You sit on your bed and adjust your pillows, mentally preparing yourself for the trials ahead.

You give your self-stitched teddy bear a hug.

As you step outside your room, however, you are suddenly met with someone you haven't seen all day: Rain.

The prince steps in front of you, tall and strong, with a curious look in his amethyst-like eyes. "Princess Mileena," he says in a light tone. "I was wondering if you have a moment."

You look out the window at the sun and you know that you do not have much time left before you are to leave.

You take the time to explain your encounter with Rain upstairs. Kitana listens diligently, as does Jade nearby. When you mention that the same scent was found on Tanya from the cell, and it stemmed from Rain, the princess grows very concerned. "Rain... What role could he have played in Quan Chi's escape? He was questioned and Jerrod found no trace of deceit in his mind..."

"Do you think Tanya may conspire against us?" Jade boldly asks.

"I do not know," you admit. "I know nothing beyond what I have told you."

Kitana seems deep in thought. "I cannot think of a reason why Rain nor Tanya would free Quan Chi. It's possible they may be framed, but if they are, then it may mean treason is afoot. We will need to investigate this further when we return. Until then... perhaps we should keep this between ourselves."

"Is that for the best?" you ask.

"Tanya is already gone," Jade says. "And Rain would never dare make a move against the royalty, even if we are away. Sindel and Jerrod could overpower him. If there is some kind of power play at work here, I doubt that he will make his move now."

Jade picks up her bo staff, commanding it to shrink to its rod-sized form, and Kitana banishes her enchanted steel fans. "Father is expecting us," she says to you as the three of you walk to the throne room. It has been cleared so that Sindel and Jerrod can perform the ritual to send you to the Netherrealm.

As dedicated servants prepare the runes, Jerrod takes you off to the side. "I do not mean to be overly concerned, my daughter, but I am sending you into hell. Please be careful."

You smile beneath your veil and give him a hug before saying, "I promised I would."

"I know you will, Mileena," he says with pride in his voice. You join Kitana and Jade in the middle of the room as Sindel and Jerrod make the final preparations.

"You will be sent not far from Quan Chi's fortress," Sindel tells you. "Far away enough that you will not be detected by any magical means. See what you can find. If you can bring back the orb or the Nethership, do so. They are invaluable resources. If you can bring back Quan Chi... Well, I will leave that to your judgment. He and his assassins are dangerous."

"The Netherrealm is dangerous for more than the demons who inhabit it," Jerrod warns. "It will attempt to play tricks on you. Do not stay any longer than necessary."

The three of you nod and prepare yourselves. Jerrod and Sindel speak a series of ancient magical words and a blazing orange light encircles you all and grows into a fiery whirlwind. The three of you get ready as you are whisked away from Edenia and into the infinite hell of the Netherrealm.

A wasteland of ash, fire, lava, skulls and red skies stretches out in all directions. Towers of brimstone, spiked columns, tortured souls impaled on spikes forever doomed to wallow in pain, mountains that stretch high above the clouds are just a few of the sights laid bare before you.

A hot wind strays in your direction as you, Kitana and Jade wordlessly take off to get a better vantage point from which to see Quan Chi's fortress.

As the three of you reach the base of a nearby mountain, Kitana turns to look at you and Jade. "We will have a password," she says, "so that none may fool us."

She moves in close and whispers into Jade's ear, then yours. "Dildos."

What a strange word. What could it possibly mean? A concern for later.

You and Jade both watch out for Kitana as the three of you scale the side of the mountain. Along the way, you make only the briefest of conversation; you do not want to attract unwanted attention.

Halfway up, you take a momentary break to regain stamina for the rest of the climb. You look up into the red sky and see the bleak landscape around you. You have only heard very little about the netherrealm, but you know that it is comprised of many layers, some radically different from the others, but only the top layer has a sky with no ceiling. This must be the top layer, then.

Alright, no bullshit; I won't respond to other trolls like >>42534057, but you've been consistent in arguing your stance and polite so I will respond in kind. The fact is that I don't want to change the name. I think "Kon Quest" and "Kon-Quest" or any similar change just isn't good, and the word Konquest means something to me, even if it doesn't mean anything to anyone else. It goes back a long ways for me in a series I hold very dear.

So thank you for bringing up your points, but no, I don't want to change the name because, for me, it's about maintaining an integrity to the source material and paying homage to the Konquests of old. I appreciate the fact that you don't like quests, that's fine, there's threads I don't like on /tg/ either, but I simply ignore them. You get Kitana's attention and point up at the owl. "Are those native to the Netherrealm?"

"The Netherrealm has many strange qualities," Kitana says. "In theory, anything could appear."

Jade narrows her eyes and takes out her razor-boomerang. "Perhaps we should dispatch it. It may be spying on us.

Kitana is about to give the order when the distracting owl allows a humanoid figure to leap out and surprise you three; with a club on one arm and a green mask on his face, he roars and smashes his iron club down where Kitana was just climbing. His body is without skin and his flesh drips gore; flies circle around his flesh, buzzing constantly. You are surprised you did not smell him before he snuck up on you, but he blended in well with the environment.

You three look at him as he growls. "Welcome to hell! You pretties do not wear the garb of the Brotherhood of Shadow, though you dress closely enough... I wonder if you taste as good as you look, mmm..."

Kitana's steel fans appear in her hands and she scoffs. "You are but one, oni. What chance could you have?"

The oni cackles. "We shall see!"

He leaps off the cliff face and attacks you three from above, preparing to drop his iron club down upon you!

You curl into a ball and roll towards him, propelled by magical force. He leaps overhead and kicks you along, nearly knocking you off the mountain. You catch yourself on a rock and hold yourself steady as your fellow assassins attack him from both sides.

You teleport above him and hit him with a dropkick. He roars in fury as he swings his club around, but you duck under and deliver a fierce uppercut to the oni's jaw that sends him flying back. As he does so, Kitana leaps into the air and slices him across the chest and Jade waits for where he lands to hit his head with her bo staff, knocking off his mask.

He hits the ground and crawls off to one side, searching for his mask. The three of you gather as he begins to cackle. At that moment, a shrill cry from above draws your attention as the owl returns, this time carrying what looks to be an iron ball with a chain attached to it.

He drops the ball and it hits the ground, cracking the stone slightly. At that moment, a large, blue, clawed hand emerges from the ground and attached to it is a hulking hunchbacked beast with three glowing yellow eyes. It roars as it picks up the ball in one of its massive hands.

The other oni gets to his feet alongside the monster, his eyes white and colorless as he roars in primal fury, all semblance of control granted by his enchanted mask now gone. The larger of the brutes smashes his ball against the ground, creating a small earthquake that causes the nearby cliff to break somewhat, the rocks tumbling down into a raging river of lava.

Both oni charge in for the kill!

You throw a sai into his hand, holding him in place, as Kitana and Jade attack the larger oni. You spy his mask and kick it towards him, hoping that it will go over the edge. However, his eyes glow bright white and the mask is summoned directly to his face once it is near him, not unlike a magnet. It slides over the stone and back onto him as he tears his hand through the blade of your sai while using his club arm to get back up.

He laughs as he charges back at you; however, you instead roll towards the blue brute, tripping him from behind as Jade pole vault kicks him in the chest, causing him to fall back on top of the smaller oni.

"GET OFF OF ME, YOU FOOL!" the smaller one shouts.

In his attempts to get up, he raises an arm and slams the iron ball down onto the ground, creating another earthquake. Part of the cliff cracks in half and all five of you find your footing lost as you start to tumble down the side of the mountain!
