Become The Dragon Quest 13

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you took one of the pills Kat gave you so you could struggle through the first part of the day, and the side effect was numbness. It let you ignore your wounds for a little while, which was nice. You sat through a lecture with Professor Ulvirahoy, the man who keeps the capitol city running smoothly, and learned about magic items and how the city itself functions. You didn't catch most of it, but you did get enough of it that you can survive the ball without blowing yourself up, and you could probably hold a conversation about it with someone without seeming like a total country bumpkin.

After finishing his lecture he went to leave via a door he conjured, only for debris to explode out of it and into your den. He hurried through to find out what was going on, completely missing the fact that a construct got blown through the portal. The construct, Epsi, freaked out upon finding out that the portal had closed, so you decided to take a day trip to take her home. You had a brief encounter with Millie and learned that they're “sisters”, and headed of on your way.

You spent most of the trip in pleasant silence, focusing on the road to avoid accidents and to make sure you made good time. You arrived at the outer wall and saw a woman arguing with some knights while some other knights tried to get her broken cart upright. Seeing an opportunity to make yourself known, you helped the knights lift the cart and managed to not lose your cool upon hearing something hissing and growling in a half-broken crate.
>>
With the cart saved, you told the woman to fix her crate, and she ran over, tore it open and hugged the huge cat-thing inside. The knight called out a telepath to give you a mental pat down to make sure of your identity, and the girl, Vein, is like a creepier version of Millie. She gave you the go-ahead to pass through the gate, glancing at your carriage from time to time as though aware of Epsi. You then totally botched talking to the knight at the gate, jokingly insulting him but sounding all too serious and pompous.

You went through the gate to the outer city, following Epsi's directions to the stairs to the lab, only to find that the stairs lead to a giant underground cavern with giant pillars serving as conduits of magical energy, swirling storms of elemental power, and in the center, apparently, the lab you're heading to. From the platform you descended to you got aboard a hovering metal cage and descended further to the lab itself.

As you passed through the storms you felt sick, and threw up your breakfast, followed by fire. You managed to figure out that the cage, meant to deflect and disperse magical energy away from the riders, had a leak, and was instead letting a slowly growing amount of magic inside and trapping it there. You also managed to figure out how to let the magic flow around and through you instead of just welling up and overcharging you, netting you a new trait.

Your visit to the lab was short-lived and full of smoke, so you didn't have much of a chance to see it properly. Epsi ran off ahead and found Ulvirahoy, dead under some rubble, but then he also ran over to her and hugged her, took a ring from the hand of the dead one, and said something about temporal clones while the dead one turned to dust. You don't know what to make of him now. As thanks, Ulvirahoy let you take an item from the lab and gave you access to his portal to get home. You snagged some snazzy earrings and headed for home.
>>
After arriving home, you decided to see about those healing potions Kat promised you. You slammed all three at once despite the warning that there might be some intense pain, and you struggled through it in your den, managing to overcome the pain and accept it. It's just before dinner time and the pill has clearly worn off completely, but all your wounds are healed and you're ready for sword lessons.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

Also, a quick note. "Sir Black and the Red Scale" won't be done today because my boss called me in early. Apparently someone at work was dealing pot and got his ass fired, and I've gotta cover the end of his shift on top of mine. I'll do my best to finish it, but I'm not gonna make any promises. You can enjoy the title though. All you people wanting more of Taret will enjoy this one a lot.

Evens relax, odds earrings
>>
You carefully remove the earrings and examine them. The stones are rubies and they glow faintly. A quick glance with your sight tells you that they're magical, but you don't know what they do. Putting them in did nothing as far as you can tell, so you'll have to experiment or find an expert.

As you're sitting there contemplating the earrings you feel a sudden tiredness come over you as the pill wears off completely. You struggle to your feet and yawn. You could head to your room and pass out, or take another dose and be awake for dinner and sword practice, but you might be up all night.

You pull out the bottle and take out a pill, cracking it in half and taking part of it. It's not as potent like this, but you at least feel like you're not about to pass out standing up. You slip the bottle back into your pocket and head for the dining room.

There's a large roast on the table, and a few plates ofroasted vegetables, pasta and fruit. There's no sign of the others though. You sit down to your meal and sigh. Another meal alone.

After dinner you take a moment to reflect. You've already blown off one lesson, you could blow off another and maybe dabble in the alchemy lab or something, maybe finally make that list of things to buy or write that letter to home. But the lessons are toughening you up, and your sword feels a lot surer in your grasp now.

You grab your sword and armor and get ready for Captain Pucelik to kick your ass again. When you get to the courtyard, though, you're surprised to find Gimbly there with the captain, both chatting amicably about something. As you arrive the captain smiles at you.

You accept the challenge, draw your sword and ready yourself. Captain Pucelik tosses his scabbard away and holds his sword in both hands, stretching a little bit. Gimbly pulls a long, thin blade from nowhere, grasping it like the bow of a violin, and he weaves it through the air. The world around you shifts, turning into a ruined battlefield with lines on the ground in place of the walls.

The fighting is intense, both of them giving you very little breathing room. It's the same story as last time, being worn down a little at a time and occasionally landing a blow. The odd thing is that every time you glance away, both of them seem to reposition themselves too quickly. You stop when you realize that they're an illusion too, and smirk, letting Gimbly know you can see through his ruse. The illusion fades, fake teachers and all, revealing Captain Pucelik and Gimbly finishing their warm up.

"An excellent display of skill and perception. You did well to notice the gaps in the illusion. Now we will come at you with our full force."

Gimbly shrugs a bit.

"You heard the man. If you die we'll say nice things about you at your funeral. Ready for round two?"

As you lay on the ground in the middle of the courtyard in your ruined armor and clutching a broken sword with straining fingers, you reflect on your life. You can hear Gimbly groaning nearby, probably still tending to the cut you gave him on his leg, and you feel a sense of pride. Between Gimbly giving you illusory wounds and Captain Pucelik giving you real ones, you feel almost as bad as when you were in the cage on the way to the lab. Still, it was worth it. You managed to hold out long enough to cut the captain on the arm, just below the shoulder. It had cost you in blood, and he had almost torn your arm off in retaliation, but you had done it.

Captain Pucelik pulls out another container of salve, patching you up and carefully adjusting your arm so the bones will set properly.

"Well done, Kotijah. That's the warrior's way, eh? Shame about your sword, I did mean to hold back, but the sight of my own blood makes me all riled up. Good job staying alive through it."

Gimbly mutters something about berserk idiots, and Captain Pucelik laughs heartily.

"She bested you quite nicely, Gimbly, are you sure you shouldn't feel more pride in our student?"

-

Swords increased to 6
Dodge increased to 3
Block increased to 2
Parry increased to 3
Perception increased to 2

-

As the salve kicks in you can feel your fingertips again, muscle and bone reconnecting, and he helps you to your feet.

"Give it til morning and you'll be good as new again. It's a shame I can't put my recruits through that sort of trial by fire, but it's always nice to see what relentlessly beating a lesson into someone can do."

You presently have no spells to cast. SP can't exceed your cap unless you over charge, and that will give you wounds. When you absorb magic you don't learn the spells, though given enough practice you might be able to gain that ability due to your draconic blood.

It's the social skill. It comes up in social interactions. If you didn't expect this, that's entirely on you.

>finding a way to level it
Choose it during level up.
>>
>>42504960
Oh, I wasn't saying I wasn't expecting it. Just that in comparison to a combat situation it's less obvious when precisely we'll roll for it. And I certainly intend to. I just hope the vote's not drowned out.
>>
>>42504989
You mean like it was for the strength and spirit?
>>
>>42505019
Beg pardon?
>>
>>42505310
Everyone in the vote said schmooze was useless we never use it, we're going to be a dragon we must level strength. Then they voted spirit for maximum dragoness.
>>
>>42505362
Indeed, with the combination of high spirit and strength we'd be able to both resist/cast strong magic while also defending ourself from physical dangers.
>>
>>42505362
I disagreed with that, personally. (Also sorry if that's a non-answer; I'm still trying to ascertain what you meant. I personally am not looking to powerlevel Schmooze, just maybe up its base from 0 by 1 or 2 points. After that, we can refocus on Spirit, Strength, Int and whatnot.
>>
>>42505402
I wonder if upgrading our eyes more could let us read situations better and therefore give a bonus in Schmooze...
>>
>>42505362
I don't think anyone said that at all. Looking back through the archives, the only thing remotely close to that was more a disagreement with the logic behind the one vote for Schmooze than a problem with the stat itself. Nobody else even commented on it.

>>42505402
Schmooze is at 1, not 0.

>>42505415
Reading situations might fall more under Sleuth than Schmooze, and would definitely let us apply the Perception skill.

You decide to talk to Gimbly and Captain Pucelik for a little bit before you head inside. You head for a nearby chair and take a seat, letting your arm set properly while you watch Gimbly pointedly refuse the healing salve.

"I'll see my own healer, I don't want your damn ointment."

Pucelik seems to take great offense to that.

"This was handcrafted! The herbs were selected by my gardener himself!"

Gimbly scowls.

"And I'm telling you that I don't want it. I'm fine."

You watch them go back and forth like that before you interject.

"What's the difference? Between healing magic and alchemical healing, I mean."

Gimbly smirks a little bit.

"Alchemy isn't a scientific approach. You just go by feel like cooking and there's no telling what exactly you'll get until you use it. Magic is a lot more precise though."

Pucelik crosses his arms.

"Alchemy is better than magic because it's potent, portable and doesn't require a mage. It's affordable, and even the good stuff is cheap compared to professional healers."

You nod slightly.

"Pros and cons to both then. Sounds to me like it's a good idea to keep an emergency stash of alchemical goods handy. But I also can't dismiss the power of healing magic."

Gimbly smirks slyly for a moment before taking the salve from Pucelik.

"Sounds to me like you're trying to play peacemaker."

He applies the salve and stands as his wound begins to mend.

"I can respect that."

Satisfied that you've managed to resolve their argument before it devolved into violence and learned something new about healing, you head inside, bidding them both good night. You can hear cheering from the den, the voices of your friends. You could head off to see them before bed, or just turn in for the night, though you're honestly pretty tired from getting your ass handed to you all day and taking enough alchemical supplements that your bones feel weird.

“I've been pushing my body too hard and not relaxing enough to recover from it. I'm sure you know how fragile humans can be.”

He nods slowly.

“I could remedy that for you, but then I would miss the surety of being able to speak with you as I please. Remember your time in that village? When you don't sleep, I have no way to commune with you as we are now.”

You nod a little bit yourself and glance around.

“I have a question for you. You want me to find the sword and the rose, but why? How are they connected to me? I've heard the stories, I've seen the parallels. A hero with second sight, a princess lured by something she shouldn't have and a monster seeking to control everything... Which one am I supposed to be?”

Allegiset blinks, and then starts to laugh, head rearing back as he bellows and guffaws.

“You... You think that...? My dear child, allow me to illuminate... Long ago a blade of starlight struck my heart and dealt the killing blow. With my last gasp I cursed my own blood to the very core, and exist forever more now as a mere phantom, able to act only through my bloodline.”

He looks you dead in the eye.

“Without a blade of starlight bathed in blood, I cannot lift my curse. To awaken your blood now would be to give you pain beyond measure. As for the rose... I need that for the blood. What do you think of being associated with the moon among the sun and moon church?

Speaking of theology, do dragons have a religion?

“I plan to. Though I have to ask... Did you know about my parents? My mother was a dragon-blooded sorceress, apparently, and my father was a knight.”

Allegiset shrugs nonchalantly.

“When your blood awakened I saw you clearly, did I not? I knew nothing of her until I saw into you and knew your lineage. Say what you will, but I know only what you do, and perhaps less, about your father and mother.”

You sigh softly, and then decide to change course as a different question forms in your mind.

“What do dragons worship? Do they believe in religion?”

Allegist gestures to himself.

“My body is my temple, and my spirit is the deity that I worship. I am my own god, and I have no need for and anyone who finds such use for it is an idiot. Belief in oneself is enough to use divine magic of both sorts. It is the faith that drives it. Tacking on unnecessary babble and ritual on top is worthless.”

You feel the world shift around you slightly.

“What do you believe in, daughter? In your own power? Or the power in your blood? You wish to become a dragon to fill some void that you believe exists within yourself. That is what holds you back. That will make you weak. You must become a dragon in form, yes, but within? Within you must be a dragon already, because that is what I see. You'll get there, I'm sure.”

Allegiset's image blurs slowly, and you find yourself being gently shaken awake by a maid.

“Madam? It's almost time for breakfast and you're still not out of bed yet. You have to get ready, it's your last day of classes before the ball.”

You look around a bit. You're in your room, someone changed your clothes, and your wounds have all healed. One more day of listening to people prattle on about things you're slowly finding either interest you greatly or don't impact you at all, and then you get your showdown with Gimbly and, possibly, your uncle.

You can hardly wait.

We can either do the final day as rolls or work through it normally. If you go through the classes there's very little to act out unless you decide to deviate from the path in some way. So, shall we rollplay or roleplay?

You grab a piece of toast and head off to wake up your friends, but a maid appears in the doorway and blocks your path.

“Madam, you need to eat a hearty meal so that you'll be able to take on your lessons today. It's of the utmost importance. If you don't, your debut will not be as successful. You do want to retain your title, do you not?”

Something seems a little off about the maid. Her hair isn't styled quite the same way as the others, and her voice doesn't carry the same disciplined respect.

You attempt to push past her but she doesn't budge an inch, her eyes opening very slightly, irises glowing faintly.

“I'm sorry, madam, but I simply can't allow you to leave until you've had a good meal.”

You nod a bit and shove the toast into your mouth, taking a running start this time. The maid grabs your arm and twirls, tossing you so you land in your seat at the table. It's starting to get on your nerves, frankly.

“Cenere? A word.”

Cenere appears beside you, but instead of his usual suit he's in the robes he wore when he first revealed his nature to you. The fabric is torn in places and he's panting, resting a hand on the table.

“Thank goodness you called for me... I'd have never gotten out otherwise...”

A bolt of lightning goes sailing over your head and knocks Cenere into the wall, and when you look at the maid her hand is smoking, fingers pointed at Cenere.

“You aren't supposed to be out of your cage, Cenere.”

Cenere pants softly and smiles at her.

“A good butler... always comes when he's... called for...”

He looks at you, eyes burning as he opens them.

“I think a walk outside would do you some good, madam... It's not a day to remain indoors, don't you think so? The sunlight is lovely, and it's just so stuffy in here...”

He touches the wall, burning a hole in it big enough for you to squeeze through.

“Shame about the walls... I'll need to get a carpenter in here...”

He smirks at you, before another bolt of lightning strikes his chest and he grunts, slipping to the floor again as the maid advances on you both. Cenere struggles to his feet, his breathing unsteady, the robes covering his chest scorched away to reveal flames beneath.

“I'll hold her... as long as I can... Please, my lady... run...”

You bolt from the chair towards the hole in the wall.

“I won't forget you, Cenere.”

He chuckles softly.

“Good enough for me...”

As you run through the hole in the wall you hear the woosh of flame and another bolt of crackling electricity as the two elemental constructs try to tear one another apart. The hole puts you close to the main entrance to the manor, and you could try to sneak out through there if you're careful, but you also don't know how your friends are doing or where they are.

You rise from your seat and start to sing, moving towards Cenere. He's made of fire, or at least elemental fire, and you try to focus your song on helping him, healing him, anything. As you sing you pour your meager reserves of magic into the flames, and you remember something from your first day in the city.

Dragon fire is hotter than normal fire. Dragon fire, you realize, is packed full of raw elemental fire. You have never felt quite so good about being educated before, especially when you see Cenere's robes patching themselves up, his eyes burning brightly and raw power crackling along his fingertips. A bolt of lightning strikes him and he almost shakes it off completely as your song finishes.

“Well, madam, I had expected to go down swinging.”

His voice is slow, calm and collected, but there's a soft roar like a distant inferno every time he parts his lips.

“Permission to hold nothing back? I'll try not to damage the furnishings.”

You smirk a bit.

“Granted.”

Cenere's human visage melts away to reveal a human-shaped coal bathed in flames. The eyes and mouth open wide, and the scream... You can't really call it a scream. It's like someone mixed the frenzied battlecry that Captain Pucelik had uttered while shattering your sword with something exploding. Regardless, the whole room suddenly becomes too hot for you to stay in, and you duck through the hole in the wall to avoid getting caught up in the fight that breaks out.

Go get 'em, champ.

You activate your sight to try to get a good look at the situation, but there's so much magic all over the manor right now that for the split second it's active you almost blind yourself. You can tell most of the magic is coming from downstairs though, with only a little of it up above you. Whatever is going on, it's going on underneath you.

You decide to head upstairs first since that's where everyone had been sleeping, but the appearance of another maid stops you in your tracks. She looks a lot like the one Cenere is fighting, and she smiles sweetly at you, walking over to the staircase, one hand dripping water as she goes, the other emitting little sparks of flame.

Keep in mind that a lot of what I've been doing up til this point has involved throwing things at you and then working out the reasons after the fact. It's only recently that I've begun laying the groundwork for long-term plans as it's become clearer that this quest has more of a shelf life than I initially expected. So it could very well be your uncle.

Or I could just be making shit up as I go along again and the real reason that I invent is, in fact, your uncle. Or something else entirely. Who knows! It's a mystery!

In all seriousness though, I hope you guys are enjoying the sudden tonal shift. It was getting more bogged down with the classes than I expected, and while the worldbuilding and roleplay aspects were very fun for me personally, I feel like the story was grinding to a halt in some regards. There is a point to it all, I assure you (I just have to find it. Or do I!?), I just hope it doesn't feel too jarring.
>>
>>42513241
S'all good. The tone shift was sudden, yes, but not entirely out of left field. There's reason to think, 'some folks don't want us around, it's not unfeasible that someone might try the direct approach', so I think you're fine.
>>

Well, one thing that my buddy's recent Shadowrun game taught me is don't foreshadow too much or you will have smoke coming out of your ears by the end.

You decide that going for Sena first is your best bet. Unless she loses balance and transforms enough to be able to fight them before they realize what's happening, she's in worse shape than the others. You sprint for her room, and as you do you hear the sound of an explosion and a cheer from Gil and Kat's room, before there's another scream. You quicken your pace to get to Sena and skid to a halt by her door, kicking it in to find... nothing. No maids, no Sena, just an empty room. There's another scream, louder this time, and this time you can make out who it is.

Would be cool to have a kind of barbarian fighting style where we use so much force using the weapons that we break them, then we always have a stash of swords with us ready to use.

You grab the downed maid by the leg and hoist, lifting her and spinning as you lift her up. She screams in panic as you swing her hard at her companion, who grits her teeth and punches hard. There's the loud crunch of stone on stone, and the maid you're holding falls apart into chunks of marble, one of which glows faintly, motes of dust swirling around it.

"You fight dirty. I like that. My turn!"

If she's doing something physical, utilize her own momentum against her. If she's coming straight for us, slip to the side, grab any outlying extremities, make like a throw rug and start slamming.

If she's using a weapon, dodge, get within close range while she's on the backswing, then use said weapon as leverage to grab and toss.

If it's a SHARP weapon, just get in front of something, and move so that it gets stuck in whatever, then go to town.

If she's trying something magical, then just dodge it, get behind her, German Suplex or something, bring her down on her head.

You watch the movements of her blade carefully as she charges. You don't even flinch when strange patterns form along the blade, horizontal stripes of black and white, obsidian and marble. She lunges, and you prepare to step in to throw her again when her sword suddenly grows longer, catching you in the shoulder. She lets out a cry of victory as she shoves forward, slamming you up against the wall and moving her face an inch from yours as the blade sinks in deeper, the end piercing through you and into the wall behind you.

“So weak... Was that one attack all you had in you!?”

Behind her you can see Sena trying to struggle to her feet. Her eyes look unfocused, her dazed stare locked on the blood slowly dripping from your wound down the blade.

You decide to play your last desperate card and sing for all it's worth. You pour out the magic you absorbed from the spell earlier and focus as hard as you can on obliterating your opponent.

You hadn't counted on the backlash. Trying to vaporize someone up close like this was a bad plan. There's a snap, a bright flash, and the last thing you remember is the sound of an explosion.

You awaken somewhere dark. There are voices but you can barely hear them. You can smell smoke and something burnt, and your whole body hurts. You try to look around but your vision is blurry. You feel a gentle weight against your chest and, after struggling to get your body to move even an inch, realize that the blond blurry blob is probably Sena.

You wish that you could see, or hear what everyone around you is saying. They're yelling a lot, and it doesn't seem like they've realized you're awake. You let your eyes slide closed, too tired to try to speak, and drift back into an empty, dreamless sleep, without even Allegiset to keep you company.

All is black, and still.

You grab the letter and open it up. The paper inside is stained red, and the ink is silver, almost white.

“Madam,

Trust no one. We got you out of there, but we had to leave you behind. Your friends will be safe for now, and so are you for the time being. But get out of there as quickly as you can without arousing suspicion.

Another noble house caught wind of you through their connection to the Order of Defense and decided to nip the problem in the bud, so to speak. Your manor is compromised, the shield was deactivated from inside by some kind of device. Your uncle did nothing to stop the attempt on your life, because if you died then he could try to inherit the title and your fortune without any risk at all. If you go to the ball tonight then you will most surely die, and if you don't then you'll get caught up in the web of deceit and betrayal at the heart of the capitol. No one has blackmail on you yet. No one has leverage against you yet. You are a rogue element and they will seek to destroy you as quickly as they can now that you lack your defenses.

Contained inside this envelope is something you might find useful. Keep it close at hand and do not let anyone take it from you.

-Cenere, your eternal servant”

“I don't care! You will wake her up this instant! I need to know what happened today and make sure that she's alright! If she isn't at the ball tonight then it'll have all been for nothing, do you hear me? We will lose everything!”

Bye, bitches.

>Get out of here
Only problem now is finding our friends and all that.
>>
>>42522951
We still have to make the escape.
>>
Did we find out what the earings do?
Maybe they weakened our magic defenses.
>>
Sneak roll, unless you're just gonna flat out sprint

Is it too late to sprint?
>>
>>42523107
We'll probably get spotted and then it's action movie time. Someone find a good theme, I dunno any off the top of my head.
>>
>>42523043
I would've wanted to sprint, but now when we've already got 3 rolls it would look like trying to avoid the result.

You run out the door and away from the direction of the footsteps, doing your best to be quiet about it as you try to hustle down the hall. Your efforts, however, are for naught.

“Kotijah?”

You hear Tirio speed up at the sound of your own footsteps, and he runs around the corner before you make it to the end of the hall. There are doors along the hallway, and a set of double doors at the end you're running towards. His eyes are wide with shock.

“Kotijah, come back. You don't want to go through that door. I can explain everything just please, come with me and talk this out. You're safe now, no one is going to hurt you. I know the alchemical medicines can make you feel a little paranoid and dizzy, but don't go down that hall. Please.”

He sounds sincere, which just makes it all the worse in the end.

>Go down the hall, fuck the police
>Listen to what he has to say from here
>Go with him, maybe you'll get some actual clothes

Shit, now he can get us "wanted" by the local guards as a bit mental unstable or some bullshit like that.

"I can't stay here. I'm late."

I have an idea. Let's make him think we're acting loopy so he underestimates us (in as far as rational planning)

>>42523340
If we escaped, he was going to want us anyway, better they treat us with kid gloves as a paranoid schizo than a hardened escapee (at least for a while).

You turn and run for the doors. You're done with Tirio and his schemes, done with his plots and done with whatever he has planned for you next. You head for the doors and throw them open. Beyond is a long white hallway, just like the one you were in, but the doors are all painted black and have strange symbols on them. The moment you open the doors they all start to leak black fluid, and you can hear thrashing from inside them. Tirio's voice grows distance, your eyes drawn to the door at the end. You can almost see a face when you look at the door, and the hallway seems to shrink as though the door were coming closer. There's a voice, soft but insistent, reaching into your head.

“Open the door... Let me out... I need to get out...”

The face on the door contorts into a giant gaping maw about to swallow you whole, when you feel yourself being yanked back. The double doors close, and Tirio is beside you, panting hard and glaring at you.

“When I tell you not to do something it's for a reason! That wing is off limits!”

>What the fuck was that?
>Fuck you, uncle, you left me to die

I'm not sure how we're gonna get away.

“Right, of course. I'm sorry. Can we get out of here?”

You turn and walk away from the doors, the chill still running down your spine as Tirio begins to speak.

“Let's get you some proper clothes... I need to know what happened today... Your friends couldn't be located, your staff are all gone and your manor is... It's not in a good state. I'm considering cancelling your appearance at the ball if need be, but... If you can pull through this, handle this blow with grace and tact and recover from it, it would go a long way towards cementing your position at court.”

>I'm not working with you anymore
>Fine then, let's get this over with
>I've been looking forward to this, why would I back down now?
>Other (write-in)

>>42523637
Uncle my house was attacked by constucts, someone made an attempt on my life. I get you desperately want me to appear at the ball to strengthen your image, but I am not appearing anytime soon. Not until I can protect myself from the den of vipers the nobility in this city are.
>>
>>42523637
>>42523694
Seconding.
Might also talk about not getting into the mansion or whatever
>>
>>42523637

Something kiiinda like >>42523694 but not exactly. Not sure how I want to word it. Maybe.

>"Uncle, are you mad? I had an attempt on my life made in an act of subterfuge! Outright hostility I could deal with, but I REFUSE to deal with those vipers called the nobility (I like that term) until I know I can protect myself. I don't even trust the manor anymore."
>>
>>42523637
>Glare at him.
>>
You stop in your tracks and look at him for a moment.

“I've lost my friends, uncle. My home, the place I thought was safe, was broken into and destroyed from inside. I can deal with someone coming for my life. I can accept that and deal with it. But as I told Gimbly, I don't tolerate bullshit, and unless I can defend myself from the vipers that decided to attack me, I won't be going to the ball at all.”

Tirio draws a slow breath.

“Then perhaps what you need is the right equipment. You've trained in the sword with Pucelik, yes? So you know how to protect yourself in single combat. I'll have guards in place at the ball, and with a few items you'll be safe from poisons and the like. I will do everything in my power to protect you, Kotijah, and to help you protect yourself.”

His eyes drift to your earrings for a moment, and he pauses.

“What are those? I didn't take you for the feminine sort. Well, they do look good on you at least. Still, they won't match the dress I picked out for you.”

>Did you not hear me? I'm not going
>Can you promise me that I'll be safe?
>I'll put together defenses of my own, thank you
>Other (write-in)

You would think a real man would care more about his flesh and blood.
>>
>>42523974
>"I'm not going. Politics are being stacked against me as we speak. If they see not attending a ball so soon after a concerted assassination attempt as weakness, they're a snobby sort anyways. I have bigger concerns than them."
>>
>>42523974
>>Can you promise me that I'll be safe?

>Nonetheless, I'd like to make a few preparations of my own.

We're totally not going- we're going to bail two hours before showtime- because they always expect cold feet AT the 1 hour mark.
>>
>>42523974
I want to see our armory uncle.

I'm not the only one who needs to be armed.
>>
Also, guys, he's gonna try to force the issue if we don't go. He's got plans.
>>
Do you tell him you're going to go then? Or do you fight him on the issue?
>>
>>42524181
Tell him we won't go or do anything he wants until we find the house that went against us and at least retaliated against them in some way.

also tell him where we got the earrings.
>>
>>42524181
We'll go, but we want to pick out our own blade and take our own precautions.
>>
>>42524227
Which reminds me, I never finished that list. You know which house has the closest ties to the Order of Defense. The Aston family, which has two minor houses, the Felcom family and the Pucelik family.
>>
>>42524227
Don't tell him about the earrings

>>42524274
Yeah we're not going. Tell him we will then ditch Asap. Armor mind against Millie.
