You see Nibbles working on the drills you left him with. He’s gaining confidence on his own. He can’t wait to show you.

You see Robin and Vernon. He’s teaching her the same stance he was showing you earlier. Good for getting in just a little more power in a physical attack. He’s been giving you both a million small pointers like that all summer. You feel like you've gotten years of experience through him.

You see Devon lying in the sun. His thoughts are behind a dark thick cloud. You don’t need to read his mind to know he’s relaxed, watching the training and feeling the rays on his coat.
You see Aria. She seems to notice you and Raistlin looking at her through his powers. She hurls an insult at Raistlin and he moves you both on.

You and Raistlin are physically in the nearby woods, meditating. He’s showing you everything, but letting you nudge the focus a little here and there. You’re hoping this will help you with mega-evolution. Mega-evolution is all about being on the same wavelength right?

A strong wind blows and your perception and concentration gets fuzzy. Things come back into focus as it dies down. Raistlin told you it takes a lot of concentration. Too much physical or emotional disruption and you’ll lose the connection. That makes things tricky.

You counter her attack with memories you’re proud of. She’s pushed back. They’re not as numerous, and most of them are more recent, but they hit harder.

She steps back under the weight of it all. You push her back and back, harder and faster. Her territory shrinks as yours grows.

“Okay! I give!” She throws her arms up. “But you’ll regret this. You can just sleep with him like Clair until he forgets what a bad person you a-”

You push her face back with your hand and guide Raistlin in. He’s a bit shaken, but he follows.

“Sorry about that. She’s not really friendly.”

He responds with a confused nod. You sweep your arms over the area. “Take a look. Whatever you want.”

Raistlin cautiously looks around, poking his nose under things, lifting potted plants and seeing the stains under them, checking under the beds and seeing the garbage, wiping dust off the windowsills. Everytime he does so, the connection flickers.

But he doesn’t judge you. At least, not that you can see. He seems almost jealous. You got to make mistakes. He was always in the mill.

Dark Kat puts an arm around your shoulder. “You got a rough deal, Raistlin, but a lack of freedom is better than knowing you became who you are on your own.”

You pull her as you both fall right in.

You land at the time you’re play-wrestling with some of the kids. They’re new. You’re still the cool older kid in their eyes. Well, you’re older because nobody wants to take you but they always want the new cute kids, but that doesn't matter. What matters is you’re not going to screw this up.

Except you do. Well, you don’t Raistlin does. He accidentally rips an amulet off a young boy and stomps on it when trying to keep his balance. It breaks into a million pieces. The kid looks up to Raistlin. “That was my mom’s!”

Guilt hits Raistlin hard. He does what you did in your panic. You messed up hard, but you’re the cool kid, remember? “Get over it! It’s not like she’s going to punish you.”

You didn't mean it, you just tried to act cool and instead acted callous. You grab the rest of the words before they reach the kid.

You and Dark Kat go through the rest doing the same. Raistlin is in long enough to know what’s happening, but you protect him from the worst. It’s just too much too fast for anyone.

But things get harder. You’re losing the connection. Each memory fuzzes it up even more. He has all your memories, but he’s not through living them yet.

You’re losing your grip. Raistlin is going to face the rest without you. He’s struggling to keep you connected.

You take a deep breath. You can’t panic. Raistlin’s smart. He wouldn’t be too proud to ask for help if he needed it. You let him rest for a bit while watching him, then head back.

He seems fine. You’ve led your Pokemon through battle and they’ve come out looking worse. Pokemon are tough.

You head back and work on training with the others, sending Raistlin back to Professor Fir to get a routine healing on his machine. What else can you do? You’ll figure a way to get your darkness out of him. Until then, you’ll have to trust the personification of your self-hate not to do anything she shouldn’t.

Just as you end that call, you get another. It’s Clair. She has tears in her eyes and anger all over her face.

“He’s hurt! What happened!”

Your heart stops. “Wh-what do you mean?” She sense Raistlin from there on her own? DId you mess up that bad?

Clair’s eyes open in surprise. “You don’t know? I just assumed he was doing something stupid with you.”

Now you’re confused. “What are you talking about?”

“Vance! I got a voicemail from the hospital. I’ve been calling back but now they’re telling me they can’t talk about it!”

Before you can answer, the phone beeps. There’s another call coming in. It’s...a hospital. “Hold on. I have a call from-”

“I know! Answer it!” She taps her head.

You flip lines. It’s Vance. he’s bruised up. “Hey.” He weakly mutters. “I’ve been trying to get through to Clair.”

You shake your head. “What happened?”

He explains that he and Jeanine have been working with a group of rangers taking on Team Imperium. They were being careful. At least, they thought they were. There was a slip up and they got caught. He and Jeanine got out, but things were pretty rough. He got the worst of it. Jeanine took a few blows but nothing serious. “I'm going to tell Clair a sanitized version.”

You tap your head. “She’s tuned in.”

He scratches the back of his head, then coughs. “Oh boy.”

“Is Jeanine there?”

She pops her face onto the screen and waves. “Hey Kat!” She has a nasty shiner on her eye and a bandage on her nose.

Just as she comes on the screen, Robin comes in behind you. You decide to flip it to a threeway call. Might as well now.

Clair chews out Vance and Jeanine while you fill Robin in on what happened. She goes on and on about how they shouldn’t do anything dangerous like that, and threatens to call in a complaint about the rangers. Vance explains the ones he was working with weren’t exactly sanctioned on some of the stuff they were doing.

You interrupt. “Look, you guys stay out of trouble and keep a low profile, okay? Just worry about getting better.” Clair and Robin second your notion. You’ll see them soon enough. You hate being separated for this long though.

A doctor comes along and insists Vance and Jeanine rest. “In separate rooms,” she makes sure to emphasize.

You make a mental note to order flowers and a saucy little number for Jeanine.

That leaves you, Robin, and Clair. You didn’t get a chance to really notice, but she’s looking different. She has her hair up in twintails. And you can’t tell for sure because of her sweater, but she looks like her chest is growing. A lot.

Robin nods in agreement with you. Clair rolls her eyes, but you see a smile. “Shut-up! I just got sick of people comparing me to a horror movie girl when my hair covered my eyes.”

You fold your arms “And what’s with the sweater puppies? When did that happen?”

Clair’s face turns red and she looks annoyed. “I thought the hoodie would hide them.” She unzips it now. “Damn that’s hot.”

“I’ll say,” you give her a flirtatious lip bite. “Robin thinks so too.”

Robin blushes as you put her on the spot. Clair blushes too, but not as hard. “It’s not. It’s annoying! I’ve got stretch marks and they get sore and it makes it harder to get a read on people’s intent because their surface thoughts are always ‘wow! tits!’”

You feel a little bad, but not enough to stifle a laugh.

“Look, while I have you, I need your advice.”

You tell Clair about Raistlin. She listens, looking extremely annoyed as the story goes on. “This is why you don’t mess with heads if you don’t know what you’re doing!”

She’s right, but you don’t want to hear it right now. “Can you yell at me later? I want to know what I can do now. After that, I promise you can say whatever you want to me.”

She growls. “Just...ugh. I don’t know. He probably just needs sleep. I can take a look if you get him in front of the screen, but it might not go well if he’s too tired for it. How can you be so reckless? You know, you did exactly what a certain champion would do to get mega-evolution!”

You slam your hand on the desk. “Hey! I didn't mean for this to happen. And since when are you the moral authority on physic ethics?” You stop short of mentioning her mess up with Vance. She doesn’t need that thrown in her face. Yet.

Robin puts a hand on your shoulder. “Clair...”

Clair huffs and folds her arms. “Okay. I get it. I'm just sensitive about this stuff, alright?” She closes her eyes and signs again, slower. “Sorry. It actually wasn't a bad idea, you just have to be careful with this stuff. Raistlin doesn't have a lot of his own experiences to put your entire life in context.”

“You’ll help if he needs more than rest?”

“Yeah. I’ll help. But make sure there’s a good connection on the screen. At this distance even I need a visual.”

You spend the rest of the call catching up. Clair’s been handling a huge load of challengers at her gym. She thinks they’ll be a lot of people at the tournament this year, which means heavy elimination rules to thin the numbers. “There’s even a rumour they’ll let the top four challengers take on the Elite Four. They haven’t put that to a vote yet though.”

If she didn't, she wouldn't be able to mega-evolve pokemon. Remember that she doesn't have disdain for pokemon like Hornbeam does. If anything she idolizes them in a kind of twisted RULES OF NATURE way. It's just that she's able to open herself up to pokemon without being a less terrible person.

You follow Robin outside and listen to Vernon. He gives you some more general pointers on how a Pokemon can roll with blows. Nothing game changing, but every little bit helps. You drill on that until sundown.

Just as you’re getting ready for bed, you notice Vernon slipping on a backpack and heading out. Where can he be going at this time of night?

You stay back and take care of Raistlin. There really isn't a whole lot you can do for him besides be there, but you occasionally feed him a poffin and vitamin or get him some water. He can do it himself, but you want to make sure he just concentrates on getting better.

He looks pretty stressed. You ask if you can get him anything else. You feel him reach out to you with his mind to answer no instead of nodding his head. He must be feeling better if he’s doing that.

Man, you’re bored. With nothing to actively do, you feel like a caged animal. You and boredom don’t really mix. As a kid, you’d go find trouble. As a trainer, you’d train or study or get frisky with Robin.

You hear her snore in the other room. She does that when she doesn't have you to snuggle against. She’s been training really hard, and you can see that with how strong her Pokemon are looking.

You look back to Raistlin. He just slowly blinks. How is he always so okay with doing nothing?

“Are you sure you don’t need anything?”

He reaches out once again to let you know he’s fine.

Huh. Now that he’s in your head again, maybe you can get Dark Kat back, or try to help out another way.

You sit next to Raistlin and just relax. It’s hard not actively doing something. You’re a doer. t’s who you are.

Even Trunks was working towards a goal by being a tree. Trees do things slower than everything else, but they still do things. You recall as you stayed with him and the entire forest very slowly followed the sun and felt the wind and watched the animals.

But you’re just sitting here. You can’t even try to relax because that defeats the purpose.

You’ve been over this before. You breath. You’ve meditated with Jeanine and Raistlin. You get it. You start by relaxing your toes and working your way up. One muscle group at a time, until you’re no longer thinking about anything. You’re just sitting in peace with yourself. You lose track of time. No, that’s not true. You don’t lose it, you just let it float away. You’re not going anywhere. You don’t need anything but your own mind. It’s not so bad in here without your self-loathing running around. Sure, you’re mostly at peace with it, but not having it at all is a whole new experience.

You feel a soft glowing light.
