Once in the Seireitei, after dispensing with the typical formalities surrounding the return of a Captain from deployment, you make your way straight to the First Division meeting hall where you find several other Captains waiting.

“I suppose this is the best that can be hoped for,” the Head Captain mutters darkly. “Very well, I shall inform you all why I have called this meeting. The Lieutenant of Third Division has lost several of her shinigami to an unknown assailant. She is currently having difficulty locating the enemy, but it is presumed to be a hollow.”

“Is it a menos?” Ukitake asks thoughtfully. “Or is it another one of these mystery hollows we've had reports about?”

“You mean the ones that can hide their presence?” Shunsui muses half to himself. “I certainly wouldn't rule out either possibility.”

“Regardless of what it is,” the Head Captain continues, “we have received a formal request for a Captain to kill it. I have suggested to the Central 46 that Captain Kusajishi respond as she sees fit.”

“You are to take command, locate that hollow, and exterminate it.”

You frown. At the moment Kai and Mirai are deployed to reinforce Shunsui's Division, and Rangiku is off on assignment in the outer Rukongai with a few of Zaraki's seated officers... Ayesagawa and Madarame, you recall.

You quickly depart once more for the world of the living. It takes a little bit longer to arrange the transportation, but you soon find yourself in the middle of a sweltering jungle hellhole: Guadalcanal. By September of 1942 there are almost a hundred thousand fighting men on the island, and none of them want to be there. It's all standing water, razorgrass, and dense jungle, riddled by a thousand different kinds of tropical disease. So many ways to find an agonizing death.

“Lieutenant Iba!” you call out as the small band of shinigami stationed here, led by Tetsuzaemon's mother, comes into view over a grassy hilltop.

“Captain,” she bows sternly. “Good of you to join us.”

The older woman grimaces, and her companions seem to avoid your eyes. “We... lost another one last night, Captain.”

Chikane shakes her head solemnly. “We already sent the bodies to Kurotsuchi... or at least what was left of them. It wasn't pretty.”

You sigh, regretting that there wasn't really enough information for your tastes. But as far as you can tell nobody has seen the hollow you're tracking and survive, so it's unsurprising that the shinigami here would be so unhelpful.

With that in mind, you wait until the sun sinks low in the sky: typical time for a patrol along the stretch of coast you think this hollow has set up as its hunting grounds. The patrol takes you along what seems like a game trail. Normally you would criticize Iba for setting up on such an obvious route, but fighting your way through the rest of the jungle may just have been enough of a problem that you'd have made the same mistake yourself.

You motion to the three shinigami who came along with you to keep quiet, and try your hardest to catch any unusual sounds that may not be natural to the jungle around you. Birds, insects, and the odd burst of gunfire make it difficult as night falls.

You kick one of the Third Division shinigami out of the way as a trio of green vines lash out at him from the jungle... it seems like suddenly the whole jungle is writhing around you. So that's how it happened, the hollow just had to wait for an opening and ambush its prey like this. Even you had trouble spotting it, and you can't sense its spiritual pressure.

“A hollow!?” the man you saved manages to sputter as your little team circle around, as if readying to keep the jungle itself at bay.

A second burst from our of the foliage scatters your formation, and one of the vines leaves a shinigami's arm hanging at an odd angle as the man screams in pain and rage. This time you spot a shadowy, lumbering figure in the dark that seems like it could be the main body.

“Haien!” you shout, firing an unincanted spell into the dark. At your current reduced level of strength it's weaker than it should be, and much of the bite is taken out of it when it passes through a few trees to reach its target, but you can tell that part of your attack hit what appears to be the main body of a hollow.

It cackles loudly despite a tone of pain in its voice. “I see one of you has an uncommonly strong bite! I shall have to dispose of you first!”

Suddenly the beast's many vine-like tendrils seem to lose their focus on anything but you, and they snap viciously through the dim undergrowth towards you. Too late you realize that their aim is not for your body, but instead for your drawn zanpakuto.

This thing killed several ordinary shinigami before you got here. Keeping your power reduced was a mistake, and now you can see why.

The steel of your sword bubbles and seethes before seeming to boil away, right down to the hilt. You can feel Tenkotsuki's alarm in your mind as you're suddenly weaponless, but you can no longer hear her frantic shouts. The zanpakuto's physical manifestation is the contact point between your inner world and the outside world, and now that the blade is gone you feel strangely alone. You can feel her in your heart, but she offers no words of beratement at your obvious mistake.

The silence in your mind is deafening.

“Crawling queen of iron!” you roar as the technique limiting your reiatsu strains from the sheer power of your hatred of this nameless creature. “Eternally self-destructing doll of mud!”

“Wait... wait! We can make a deal! I can... I can...”

The beast's words falter as your reiatsu reaches its full potential

“Unite, repulse! Fill with soil and know your own powerlessness!” The black form of your kidō warps the air around the hollow as it springs into existence, the overwhelming might of your reiatsu causing the seated officers around you to collapse unceremoniously to the ground.

“Kurohitsugi!”

When you're done, and the sigil on your arm steams as it struggles to re-form, there's nothing left of the hollow... or anything else within the half kilometer between you and the sea other than bare dirt and rock. In this case there's no such thing as “overkill”, but you're still stuck with the numbing silence in your own mind.

“Ma'am, are you okay?” Chikane asks as you reappear, still shaken by your release of reiatsu earlier despite having been several kilometers away. “Where's your zanpakuto?”

“Same place as it always is,” you grown, “even if the sword's gone for the time being.”

Once you're sure nobody can see you, you tear open a portal to the Valley of Screams. You figure that if the Garganta is the void between spiritual realms, a space generated within that void is technically just one portal away from any other realm.

You're sure that your guesses were right, but as you open a second portal the membrane between the Royal Realm and the Garganta isn't cooperating with you. With an unearthly roar you briefly hollowfy, Rosa pouring her own reiatsu behind yours as you focus the massive combined power on a single spot in the Royal Realm's defensive bubble. And on the other side, beyond your fingers, you start to see daylight. One last powerful push tears an open wound in the universe, through which you launch yourself just in the nick of time. The wound seals itself not even a full second after you pass through... but the downside is that you've built up a lot of force to manage the feat. It's enough to send you shooting towards the ground like a champagne cork.

“Shitshitshitshit!” you shout as you try and fail to slow your descent, and eventually are forced to circle your hand in front of you before slamming into the dirt. Your impact gouges out a crater several meters across, and sends up a massive pall of dirt and dust... though having reduced the ground in front of you to loose sand you've managed to avoid injury. If you'd held out any hope of arriving stealthily, that hope vanishes amidst the ear-splitting crash.

The first responders to your invasion of the Royal Realm seem to be spirits of some kind... they have reiatsu, but it doesn't feel like they're shinigami. There are five of them, each seemingly quite different from the last.

“You're not supposed to be here,” the readhead glares angrily. “Who are you, anyway? Are you a hollow?”

Next to her a busty blonde laughs before giving a loud proclaimation. “You're asking too many questions again, Mera. All she needs to know is we're the bodyguards of the God of the Sword, and we're here to kick her ass!”

“How bothersome. You're too loud, Hasuka,” the gloomiest member of their group insists, wrapped in several sashes and bearing an ornate crescent-shaped hairpiece.

A shorter girl, not much bigger than Rangiku was as a child, addresses you next. Her eyes are curious behind her fluffy hair, and her tone is more one of amusement rather than aggression. “How did you manage to get here?”

The fifth one a brooding girl with dark hair and many bandages wrapping her skin, remains silent as you look them over. Their attention is drawn away from their own arguments as you reply.

The door of the shack slams open as a dark-skinned shinigami storms out, his hair seemingly wet. You may have just interrupted his bath.

“Come on, now!" he shouts as he walks towards you. "What's all the ruckus out... oh, son of a...”

“Don't you turn your fucking back on me!" you shout as he spins on his heel and tries to reverse course. "I need a favor!”

A flash step later and Oetsu is right in your face. If he's trying to intimidate you, the towel, wet hair, and rubber duck are making it harder to do so. “I'm under no obligation, get it? Why should I give you a new sword? And how are you even here?”

“I don't take no for an answer. That answers both your questions.”

“Go home!” he demands, turning away from you.

“Sounds dangerously close to a no.”

The God of the sword stares at you like you've grown a second head. “You mean to say you talk to her even when you're not in jinzen?”

After looking you over for several minutes, during which the duck squeaks constantly as he thinks, Oetsu seems to make a decision. “Alright then. Normally I don't facilitate these sorts of shenanigans, but I'll get you an asauchi.”

A thought occurs to you... it could result in your losing your hollowfication, but you may never get a chance like this again. It may well be time... in a way, you suppose losing Tenkotsuki like this has helped you understand how she must have felt back then.

You follow Oetsu's zanpakuto to a forge, where the man presents you with a pair of asauchi: one in each hand.

"I've made all the arrangements," he tells you. "Your move, lady."

You take a meditative attitude, and are greeted by the sound of Rosa's voice echoing through your mind. “You're forging me into a zanpakuto? Why?”

She sounds more confused and uncertain than anything else.

“It feels right,” you explain calmly.

“You know I'm a being born out of hatred and emptiness, right?”

“I do.”

She sighs. “Did you hit your head in the fight with that hollow?”

“I didn't.”

“And yet you're somehow okay with this?”

It's your turn to sigh in frustration at this endless line of questioning. “You may not be my favorite part of me, but you're still a part of me. It wouldn't do to keep ignoring you, and maybe like this we can at least learn to tolerate each other.”

After a moment, you feel the hollow mask on your face shatter as reiatsu pours from your body into the two blades you've thrust into the forge.

The fires flare to massive new heights, threatening to scorch even the heavens above as you pour your reiatsu into the twin blades in your hands. The metal burns a blinding white, just as pure and as wild as the swirling aura of shunkō that swirls around you, crying and sighing as your reiatsu glows.

The zanpakuto who are helping Nimaiya at his forge have to brace themselves against the massive vortex of energy to keep from being blown off their feet.

“She's gonna bring down the whole palace if this keeps up!” Mera shouts, and if anyone disagrees that such a thing is possible they keep it to themselves. Feeling the way the ground around you is shaking, you have to admit that you think it could very well be true. That doesn't stop you of course, and you somehow manage to pour even more of your energy into the process. It feels amazing, how could something like this be a danger to you?

n your right hand is Tenkotsuki, her blade somehow even more beautiful now than ever before. Her graceful waisted hilt, her gently-curving blade, the fluid undulating temper line... she's your sword alright. Her guard is the only real difference, as it now features openwork like an iron magnolia flower with nine overlapping petals and a fine, misty pattern of silver filigree across its black surface. Your fingers, filled with a new strength, tighten resolutely around her hilt.

“Happy to have you back too, my dear Riku,” her voice greets you warmly in your mind as you guide her almost lovingly into a sheath offered by Oetsu. As it slides in the blade seals for the first time, retaining the shape of a kodachi. “Though I must admit some surprise at your decision. Not displeasure mind you... just surprise.”

Your left hand holds a similar blade, new to you yet somehow familiar. It's just a little shorter, and curved ever so slightly further down the length of the blade than a proper kodachi. Into this blade you've forged the part of your soul belonging to Rosa Rosette's thoughts and memories, which had become your inner hollow. As it slides easily into its own sheath, it seals into the form of a short sword.

After a moment you can hear her voice as well, no longer a distorted mockery of your own.

"What am I?" she asks.

She literally described herself just now as a being "born of hatred", and Riku's mental narrative claimed that she "understood how she must have felt" when she was enraged at losing Tenkotsuki. Not to mention the fact that Tenkotsuki is Riku's "pride", making it that much more reasonable for Rosa to be another aspect of her soul that had been split off after her death.

I was sincerely hoping you wouldn't resort to diplomancing, and would instead consider the nature of the character you're dealing with. Let this be a lesson that from here on pretty words won't solve everything... in this case, they'd make things worse.
