You are a Magical Girl, and you've narrowly avoided drowning.

...Wait, no. Where did that come from? What you did narrowly avoid was trying to get into someplace you obviously have no business in - especially when the person you're looking for isn't really in that place to begin with, but rather somewhere else. Somewhere that's probably high up, or at least with enough elevation to give her a clear line of sight with the high-powered sniper rifle scope she's more than likely peering through right now. A bent cigarette burning between her lips as she grumbles something about casuals underneath her breath.

You can't believe you didn't think of it sooner, though. After all, your sempai IS the type of person to hole up inside a building, riddling every entrance with booby traps and shaped charges before barricading herself at the very top - all in preparation for a bloody final stand. The type of person who would look at a losing situation and decide to make the most out of it - not by surrendering or bargaining for an easier fate, but to make her attackers work for their kill. To make them bleed for it. To go down swinging, taking out as many of her enemies with her as she can.

Murder Mayumi did the same, when she was surrounded by Homicide Holly's gang of operator thugs, and she did it while laughing through the entire bloody, corpse-filled chapter.
>>
>>42474640

But to do exactly that while not having to pay that ultimate price? Of not actually having to be there in the first place, instead being somewhere so far away that even your Soul Gem is having trouble pinpointing her exact location, forcing you to concentrate just to keep a solid lock on her whereabouts? Being this cunning that she was able to take advantage of her other selves' obvious tunnel vision, leading them all by the nose, directing them to bark up at the completely wrong tree while she chuckles at their dogged efforts from miles away?

You're relieved that you managed to second-guess her before you yourself fell into the same trap, of course. But this...it's a chilling reminder that even with you being able to bring out her softer, warmer side, there will always be that part of her that earned the name Murderface.

The part of her that could kill as easily as she breathed.

The part of her that could run headfirst into a huge firefight with a gun and a single magazine, headshot everyone, and still have enough rounds left to blow out everyone else's kneecaps.

The part of her that would eventually earn her wings and be called the blight of the universe by mutant alien cats.

...

Someday, you'll be able to tell her how much that murderous, dangerous side of her excites you just as much as it frightens you.

Maybe then you'll be able to tell her the truth, too.

About everything.

Anyway. With your Soul Gem leading the way, you and Wendy carefully extract yourselves from the death trap that the other Homuras have decided to throw away their own lives into assaulting - taking care not to leave any trail behind you, just in case one of them gets the bright idea of shadowing you. They may have fallen for your sempai's ruse, but as they do share your sempai's own kind of frighteningly-focused intellect...well, you just don't want to take any chances. The last thing you want to do is to blow your sempai's cover and lead them to her.

A few minutes' of walking - followed by ten minutes of hitching a ride on Wendy's rather ridiculous-looking flying broomstick, a mode of transportation that she had to literally threaten you to take seriously, as the mere sight of it made you giggle like a maniac - and you finally reach the location that your Soul Gem had been pointing to. And for the most part, your prediction fits - your sempai has indeed holed herself up in an elevated position, just far enough from the actual building to escape detection while being high enough to offer a wicked vantage point to pick off targets with. A Vindicare's dream.

But at the same time, it's...not really what you expected.

Embedded in the bleak, featureless scenery's many random outcroppings of jagged rock and marble, on one high enough that it could be considered a small mountain - is an apartment-style condominium. One literally sliced away from the high-rise building it was a part of, and stuck there like a clumsy children's project.

But it's not..it's not your sempai's. Not the one you know of, anyway. For one, it doesn't look like the expensive unit that Kyuubey gave her before her ratification. It certainly doesn't look half as nice.

[2/3]
>>
>>42474687

"...Holy shit." Wendy's eyes go wide as she makes the broom you've both been riding on touch down near the apartment's doorstep. "...It's...it's her old apartment. The shitty one, before she got roped into being a watch-wearing dildo. Before...everything, really." The American Callidus shakes her head. "Jesus. I didn't think I'd ever see it again."

Her old apartment...? You echo, looking back at the cheaply-made door barring your path, the thinly-applied paintjob doing a commendable job in flaking away bit by bit. ...Oh. That...that makes sense, then. You've never really seen it yourself, only having heard of the events that had taken place that had necessitated her moving out. Not...really all that pleasant to hear to be honest, but then again, nothing about your sempai's past has been particularly cheerful, with the rare exception here and there.

But that doesn't matter. Not right now. Not when you've finally found her - a step closer to getting her out of this Nightmare and back into the real world.

You just need to get inside and find her. The patina-covered doorknob all but calling for you to reach out and grab it.

...It's...it's strange, though. For some reason, instead of your feeling elated, all you feel is dread. A cold sort, the kind that twists your gusts from within and dumps ice in the pit of your stomach.

"...Well?" Wendy turns towards you, confused. "Aren't we going in? We still have to give her the Desert Eagle, right?"

Y-yeah. Of course.

"So what the fuck are we waiting for?"

What do you do?

You shake your head at Wendy and signal for her to stay completely still. The brown-haired Callidus frowning at you, but nodding - her sleepy eyes narrowing at the sight of your Soul Gem pulsing in a slow, steady rhythm. The both of you watching it for any change, any errant misstep in the beat that would clue you in to someone occluding themselves from sight with magic. Someone who may have followed you here.

Finding none - the both of you heaving a simultaneous sigh of relief - it's here that you signal Wendy to keep a look out as you make to pulse your sempai, while keeping away from the door yourself. ...You're not taking any chances here, either. If your sempai had been canny enough to not only trick a thousand gun-toting maniac clones of herself to infiltrate the wrong building, then she's certainly canny enough to rig her apartment door with a few traps - just in case some idiot decides to barge in unexpectedly. And you know she hates unexpected guests more than anyone.

+ Sempai? + You pulse into your attunement with her. + Sempai, I'm outside with Wendy. Can you let us in? +

For a couple of moments, you receive no answer. No reply, not even a psychic nudge of acknowledgment pulsed through the connection.

A few minutes later, it comes - in the form of what sounds like multiple locks being undone from behind the door. Followed by the slow, menacing cacophony of guns being unloaded and cleared of ammunition. ...Quite a few of them, if your untrained ears are any judge. Most also qualifying as the sort of firearm with the word 'machine' somewhere in their descriptor.

"...Guess that's as good as a reply as we're going to get, then," Wendy remarks, and you can't help but agree there. Under the current circumstances, it's as good as your sempai welcoming you with a big grin and wide-open arms. Not that she would ever smile like that, no. Not unless you stuck your fingers in her mouth and pulled them apart.

You reach out and grab hold of the doorknob, before twisting it in your grip and then pushing the door itself open. Wendy following you close behind, one hand on the scruff of your hoodie, just in case you needed pulling away at the last moment.

What greets you at the other side of the door - besides an empty room and another door leading out of it, labeled - is a pile of guns. Literally a pile of guns hanging from the ceiling, all haphazardly lashed together in a complicated web of nylon rope and duct tape - and all of them aimed at the door. From the looks of things, they were set to empty their bulky magazines the moment someone entered the doorway, sending a veritable hailstorm of bullets at near point-blank range.

"...Jesus, Kong. Not even Mickey could've survived something like this." Wendy mutters as she beholds the booby trap to end all booby traps. "All of them set to fucking full auto, too. Jesus. What the fuck was she expecting?"

The worst, you reply, spying a small wooden chair in the corner of the room - in the middle of a pile of empty Kong bottles and spent cigarette filters. Beside it, laying open on its side, is a half-full suitcase full of grenades.

Ever since you've met her and became a part of her life, that was your sempai. Always anticipating the worst, always expecting the universe to shit itself as it always does, always bracing for the karmic gut-check to come screaming down at her. ...Some could call that paranoid, sure, but when even the universe makes itself known that it was out to get you, in the form of a pink-haired demon haunting you at every corner, even in your dreams...well, no one can blame her for being realistic, at least.

[2/3]
>>
>>42475772
You want Midori dead, anon!?
>>
>>42475816

You shake your head, and it's here that you see a shadow take a seat in that wooden chair. No, not a shadow - a ghost. A gray, faded ghost of your sempai, sporting long hair, sitting very primly on the wooden chair - the ghostly equivalent of a sniper rifle laid down on her lap.

This...this reminds you of something. You've been through this before. Back in Siberia...

You approach the ghost, gently prying Wendy's grip from your hoodie. She glances at you, then at your destination, before darkly murmuring something underneath her breath. A moment later, her signature weapon - a plain-looking kitchen knife - manifests in her hand with the juicy sound of a sharpened sword being pulled from the spine it's been using as a temporary sheath.

"...I fucking hope you know what you're doing." You hear her grumble, and you give her a nod. ...It's funny how things are working out. Before all this, back during that awfully-early meeting, you were pretty sure you'd end up trying to stab each other's faces in. Now you're actually covering each other, in this hellscape where your sempai has found herself trapped in again.

As soon as you move a couple of steps closer to the ghost is when it turns towards you, its featureless gaze swiveling milky gray eyes towards yours. You freeze for a second - just as you feel Wendy tense behind you - but instead of leaping off of her chair to bludgeon you to death with her rifle, the ghost begins to talk. Her voice oddly disembodied, as if being piped in from the outside.

"...Sleeper agents are usually the common tactic when dealing with high-risk, high-import targets." The ghost begins. "It should need not be mentioned that Callidus are the perfect choice in this matter. While there are many schools of thought on how to actually go about creating one, the premise usually follows as such: a fresh contract, on the track to a Callidus classification, is intercepted before she receives basic training."

"Are you ready to fulfill your main objective, Hanegawa Midori?"

Though that scene could also have occurred when Midori was in the hospital as well. It's not really clear so far as to whether only one of those stories is right, or if both of them are.

It might also be Chiaki was pushed so hard to her breaking point for so long, and also operating so hard for so long that she's broken as a person and can only just focus on the "mission". Whatever that is.

>Midori's hair turns pink

I don't think the midori failsafe is to make sure the memory's get wiped. I think this is specifically for the scenario in which a Homura has enough balls to fight the memory wipe and learn what's really going on.That they are fully ready to accept and handle the responsibilities all of this shit entails. That would cause a horrible persona-cascade though so the key then becomes this: how do you make sure the right Homura survives.

By making absolutely sure that the right person will be in the right place to ensure it. Without Midori here would anyone even think of using the golden weapons for this? When your warmaster is apparently becoming consumed/turning into a demon god the answer isn't usually 'lets throw more shinier demons at it, I'm sure it'll sort it out.' Instead you make sure there is somone the homura has an emotional connection with and trusts enough to handle this for you.

>>
>>42477344 >>42477349

What? What is she talking about? A...sleeper agent? Is she saying that you're one, and your main bjective involves your sempai somehow?

...That's...that's stupid! That's insane! You remember your first day reporting for basic Callidus training - you were never pulled out of formation, you were never 'intercepted', and you sure as hell didn't go through any hypno-therapy or whatever...! You're just here to save your sempai, that's it!

B-besides, Chiaki...Chiaki could have killed you back then, the first time you met! What kind of sleeper agent would have you been then, huh? What, is she saying that whoever set you up as a sleeper agent predicted that she'd spare your life, too?! Because no one can plan that far ahead, that's just crazy!

Wait...is she insinuating that this is one of Malal's plans, or whatever? Because that's...no, that's not possible. Malal wouldn't do something like that to your sempai. Not after everything else she's put her through. It's stupid--

The ghost seems to consider this, before smiling. A small, sad smile. "You underestimate the dedication of those who placed you on the game board, Hanegawa Midori. They play the long game, just as we do. Just as Malal tried to and failed." It lets out a small chuckle, one you can't help but feel insulted by. "Then again, I agree. I would've picked a more practical approach."

You stand still for a moment, trying to reign in your temper - before shaking your head once more. For...forget it. Where the hell is your sempai? You're not sticking around for this kind of crazy talk. You've had enough thrown at your face already, and you're worried about it catching.

"Just beyond that door." It gestures politely to the one door leading out of the room - besides the one you entered from, anyway. "Send my regards to the Nameless One when the final moment dawns. ...And don't worry. I don't think she'll take it personally. Not right now as she is, anyway."

[1/2]

"...Green?" Wendy calls from across the room, her eyes wide. "What the fuck was that about?"

Just some illusion trying to freak you out. Not like THAT hasn't happened before.

You give the room a cursory once-over before going through the door. Just in case you missed anything. Wendy, still confused about your own deflection, helps out a moment later - not that you needed it, anyway. You wanted to do something, anything, just to occupy yourself from thinking about what the ghost just said.

You find what you're looking for - or at least, what you were supposed to come upon - in the suitcase of grenades, or at least.

A fragment of a Soul Gem. One that used to be whole, and one that glowed with a deep purple light.

Remarkably similar to the one you put together a lifetime ago, with the help of a pink-haired goddess. After the first time you died.

Wendy says nothing as you place it inside your inventory. Her mood - which had already been dark before - has mellowed out somewhat, although now tainted with concern. It's obvious that this is the first time she's seen you like this - and had it been any other time, you would have tried to set perceptions right. Explained things before going about them.

Not right now. Just...not right now.

You open the door leading to the next room with such force that you very nearly rip it off its hinges - causing its one lone occupant, another gray ghost in the form of your sempai - to squeak and nearly drop the bomb it was putting together. Its hair tied into two thick, heavy braids that fall to the floor on either side of her, framing a youthful bespectacled face of innocence. It looks up at you, nervous and fidgety, from its place in its heavy, comfy-looking kotatsu.

Beside the floor cushion it is sitting on is a large, wickedly-curved sword, one seemingly made of rusting black metal. It looks too murderous, too violent, to be a parrying weapon. Its purpose is singular - to main and kill and rip and tear.

>>42479215

"That's--" Wendy starts, but you raise a hand, stopping her even before she can continue.

"Sleeper agents are...I think they're horribly unfair." The ghost murmurs as you step closer to it, its eyes going wide. "N-not just to the target, but also to the agent itself. They spend all this time being with the target, becoming their friend, companion, e-even lover...a-and then they're expected to carry out their duty after hearing a particular command phrase? It presumes that, even with the weight of hypnotic suggestion, that the agent will just magically ignore their feelings towards the target, forsake their morals and convictions and belief...and for what? To follow the order of a superior who had the sadistic need to turn them into mindless, murdering robots with no free will of their own?"

"..."

"Are you...are you really going to fulfill your main objective, Hanegawa Midori-san?" The ghost asks, her voice quivering.

Why is everybody assuming that Midori was a sleeper agent from the start?
Isn't it more likely that she was made into a sleeper agent when her Soul Gem was recreated by Godoka and Malal?
They had complete access to her soul at that point, and any number of hidden failsafes and backup protocols could have been inserted into Midori's very soul.

Midori is a Vessel of Faust; maybe there's some hidden dangers or side-effects whenever Godoka has to use Pinky's powers.

Yeah but how many of those would have had a chance to plant Midori as a sleeper agent here?

It would have to be someone who has a motive to plant her near Chiaki in order for the current events to occur, someone who knew how to make her likeable to Chiaki, someone who had the power to plant things like that in the mind of a callidus without her knowing and someone with the opening to do so.

You force yourself to remain calm. Fine. It's going to be like this, is it? This is how they want to play? Just making you out like the bad guy, when all you've been doing is trying to save the one person you love?

"My...main objective is to save Chiaki." You say after a moment, inwardly horrified at how hoarse - and tired - you sound. "That's what I've been doing all this time, and that's what I'm going to do. And no one is going to tell me otherwise."

The ghost looks up at you with eyes wide with naive surprise - before it slowly lowers its head and cries. Not like a child bawling its eyes out after its toy had been broken into pieces in front of it by a vengeful playground bully, but rather the silent, shaking tears of heartbroken gratitude.

She disappears without a smirking rejoinder, leaving behind another Soul Gem fragment on the table, amongst the spare parts of the bomb she was constructing. Placing it in your inventory, you immediately go through the door leading to the next room. Because of course there's one.

Wendy, still silent, still reluctant, follows you close behind. Her breath tickling the back of your neck as you forge onward.

The person you stumble into in the next godforsaken room is....a surprise. Enough that you feel the brimming rage bubbling at the back of your eyes suddenly grow cold in your shock.

It's...it's the Armored Fragment. The crazed, brutishly-clawed fragment of your sempai that could only talk through pulsing - her mouth unable to facilitate regular speech due to the steel-sharp ivory of her blood-pinked teeth. Also ghostlike, also completely gray, but even in this diminished form you could feel the danger coming off of her in waves. The tension thick in the air around her, even as she sits slumped forward on a bench in the corner of the room, scarred face buried in her claws.

Yeah.
She is the sleeper agent.
That's the reason why Mami didn't want her to get close to Chiaki.

Finally, somebody who can put two and two together.
>>
>>42480738

"I--" You begin, but your answer is a wet leopard growl that bounces off the walls like a gunshot. A growl that ends in an almost pitiful whine, almost like that of a kicked dog.

The fragment is there, by her feet, and you slowly and carefully pick it up. You look back at Wendy, and she isn't even looking at the fragment - in fact, she's doing all she can not to look. Her eyes averted from the creature, her hand clamped tight around your wrist.

You pick up the fragment, put it in your inventory, and make to leave.

Just as you do so, though--

+ I. TRUSTED. YOU. +

You look back in alarm, just as the door you just stepped through slams shut.

. . .

. .

.

The next room isn't a room at all. It's...it looks like an apartment balcony, looking out into the night. And far in the distance is the black tower - the building under siege by your sempai's many clones. The night illuminated with the lightning-flash of muzzle flare, and made loud by ordnance thunder-crash.

Someone is...at the balcony. Someone familiar, yet a few years younger than she should be. Wearing the cream-colored Mitakihara Middle School uniform rather than the white-and-purple costume you've always seen her in. Perfect, pale unmarred skin in place of calloused, scarred swathes of flesh, with just the slightest hint of a tan, from actually spending time outside rather than secluding themselves indoors.

Her back pointed towards you as she peers at the tower in the horizon through the scope of a high-powered rifle. Snickering something about casuals underneath her breath the entire time.

"Is...is that...?" Wendy murmurs behind you. "...Kong?"

"...Chiaki's fine," The younger version of your sempai replies flippantly, with a voice yet to be ravaged by years of alcohol and nicotine abuse. "Don't misunderstand, I find the nickname cute, just that I'm not that eager to start adopting it yet."

This... is quite probable, and it's not impossible that the Homus are either confused, OR they're warning Midori of the existence of a sleeper agent without risking to trigger the commands by accident.

Which means!

More shadowruns...

Great...

After a few more moments of awkward silence, she disengages from her rifle, turning to face you fully. And you very nearly sob at how...different she looks.

The bobcut was there, sure. No longer looking like it was styled with a combat knife. Clear purple eyes, without even so much as a hint of eyebags. A quick and easy smile, a disarming one, as opposed to the perennial scowl you've grown to love.

...Sempai?

"Doubt it, I'm a few years younger than you. Kind of off to consider someone your junior your sempai, right?" Chiaki Matsuda grins, both hands on hips, a stance that your old sempai would have balked at pulling off, much less attempt.

"What took you so long?"

How do you react?

Look, let's think this through. This one seems nice and well-adjusted. Sure, she's obviously not the Chiaki we've known all quest long - but don't we want the best for Sempai? Don't we want her to be happy? Wouldn't it be best, if we have to choose one to be real and the rest to die, to save the only one who could ever know joy?

>You are an idol.

>A world-class idol.

>In fact you're the best goddamn idol there is.

>You're pretty, you're talented, you've got legions of adoring fans, and you have a new security detail competent enough to separate you from the unwashed masses. Your songs are always number one on any chart that matters, and even some that don't.

>You're number one, and you've made everybody who tried to usurp you into your friend or your bitch.

>The world is yours.

>And yet, you feel unfulfilled. Empty, as if there was a chain-smoking, binge-drinking, foul-mouthed magical girl shaped-hole in your heart.

>Oh, certainly, she was beyond crude, and she hated you like you hated idol boot camp, but having the new Warmaster as your guard dog... well, it was the most fun you'd had since you first learned how to kill.

>Which is why you plan to pay her a surprise visit. You'll drag her kicking and screaming out of her tomb of paperwork and responsibility. Really, you'll be doing her a favor. How could she refuse -you-?

>No, not a surprise visit. A surprise concert. For her. At her Officio. And you're bringing all your friends.

>The only question is... what are you going to wear? As tempting as it sounds, you can't just show up naked. The press, and your production company, would never let you hear the end of it!

>No, it has to be something bold, but tasteful. Something that screams "all eyes on me, because I'm calling the shots now."

>You'd think having a wardrobe bigger than a college campus would make this easier. Truly, nobody appreciates how much you must suffer for your art.
