You are ROY POWERS, a Vertical Tank Commander!

You weren't sure how to deal with this situation. Here you were, standing on a stage in front of what looked to be the entire damn nation of Breton, staring at you in awed silence. You were amazed at the various colors, heraldry, and patterns represented in the audience, as lords and knights from all over had flocked to the event. However, near the front was a noticeable knot of black where the Reikland delegation was sitting, their glowering glares boring holes in you, even from this distance.

"Ignore them." Tarin whispers.

"I'm trying." You whisper back, still wary of their stares.

Up ahead, you could see the King, standing up from his temporary throne as he bequeaths wreaths to Axel and Alfie, the winners of the Duel. Axel seems to be basking in the attention, while Alfie is practically sweating bullets, and pale enough that she looked like she would drop dead of stage fright at any moment. After they exit the stage, an attendant holds a microphone in front of the King.

"And now, I call upon the Champions of the Joust!"

"You're up!" Bannon hisses as he gives both of you a little shove forward. You and Tarin walk up the stage to the king, where he presents you both with a large golden trophy of a knight riding his horse at full tilt. It looked very detailed and very expensive.

"In addition to being Champions, you and your fellows will also be honorary Lords, and will be granted status and privileges as befits your rank in Breton , for all time." The King adds.

Jeez, you... you weren't prepared for THAT. You were honest to god nobility now? Well, nobility in name only, now that you thought about it, but even symbolic nobility was a pretty big step.

"Wow, thank you, sir." You manage to utter. Tarin meanwhile silently nods her acknowledgment.

"The Champions, everybody!" In a surprising show of vitality, the King steps forward and raises you and Tarin's arms in the air in victory. The crowd cheers.

"And with this victory." The King continues. "I have made my decision. Tilea has proven that it has brave and virtuous warriors worthy to fight by our side. There are also past grievances with Reikland that have yet to be rectified! With this in mind, I, King of the Bretons, declare an Errantry War on Breton!"

Suddenly, the cheers even more loudly. You were starting to get the feeling that THIS was the real reason why they were all here.

"To all those who would ride to battle, raise your banners!" The King roars. One by one, dozens, no, hundreds of banners, all unique, are raised into the air as knights, lords, and everybody in between joins in. You see Lord Artois and his followers enthusiastically holding their banners proudly in the air. What was also very noticeable was Lord Sylvan and the nobles allied with him opting out with glum looks on their faces. You also see the Reikland delegation storming out, no doubt to hurry back to their homeland to send warnings.

"You're not going to stop them?" You whisper to the King.

"They came here under the flag of negotiation, and they shall leave under it. To violate it would be a grave violation of our knightly vows." The King explains simply and gives you a sly grin. "Would you be asking me that question if you had ended up losing?"

"Good point." You concede.

Very quickly, the gathered lords and knights disperse as they ride back to their castles to rally their troops while the lower ranked nobles, who possessed little or no land, rode straight for the border, eager to be the first on the battlefield to win glory and fame. However, you and your platoon are drawn into an impromptu war council with the King and Lord Artois, being held in a secure room in the castle. In the center was a large map of the border region between Breton and Reikland. You suspect they were planning this for quite a long time.

"We have communicated our intentions to your leadership back in your home country." Lord Artois explains. "They plan to coordinate a counteroffensive at the same time we attack Reikland."

"So the question is," The King says as he settles back in his throne, "will you stay and fight by our side, or will you return to fight with your countrymen?"

"While I understand your loyalty is to your country first, I would ask you to stay and fight by our side. You've become rather popular among the younger knights, particularly the Knights Errant." Lord Artois adds. "I think your presence among them could be a great morale booster to them."

"And a way to control them, right?" Parker grins. "The Knights Errant have always been notoriously difficult to control, right? You're hoping that they'll actually listen to us."

"The thought as crossed our minds, yes." Lord Artois admits.

Bannon, however, looks uncertain.

"I don't know what the Colonel would say about this..." He mumbles.

Wanted to get my vote in first, but...

GOOOOD EVENING, /tg/! It's Saturday Night, and Vertical Tank Quest is a go-go!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc_F3PaYgl0

Let's rip up some Reikland steel and have a good time! I've been looking forward to this all week. This quest thread series has a sort of crazy-1940s sci-fi vibe that I love. Merc is good at what he does and it shows, but best of all is the gang of anons who follow this quest and post great pics, roll hot dice, and generally have a good time together.

This is gonna be a fun night, I can feel it.

inb4 this is the "Empire Strikes Back" episode of VT Quest, where the Reiklanders are aided by the Dice Gods and drive us toward desperate measures
>>

I think the overall sentiment is "stay here and show these knights how a platoon of real soldiers fights... as long as it doesn't get us in trouble with Tilean High Command".

While it's fun to be a hero, it's not fun to be court-martialed for deserting or disobeying orders. So, as long as High Command is okay with us staying out here, let's raise some banners and get stuck in!
>>
>>42467593
I agree with you overall, I just don't think Merc would offer the option if it were going to get us court-martialed and, likely result, end the quest. Ya know?

I dunno, Merc might be planning a "Law and Order: VT Quest" episode...

>"VT-tan, please show us on the blueprints where Captain Powers touched you."
>"H-he didn't mean it..."
>"Please, just point with your main cannon."
>"I... I... there. Right on my coaxial mount. A-and... there. On my exhaust piping. And... and then he unsealed my hatch, and... and... WAAAAAH! I'm sorry, Roy! I love you too!"

The episode would end with Tarin waking us up to inform us that instead of being court martialed, we're just being sent straight to the front lines as part of a penal division. If we survive and defeat the Reiklanders super super-VT, we may be absolved of our crimes.

"Sir, why don't you ask Command if we can stay here? Surely they can afford to spare a single platoon, and it'll improve Tilean/Breton relations." You suggest.

"You know, he's got a good point there." Parker grins as she prods her commander in the shoulder. "How about it? At least it puts several hundred miles between you and Sawyer!"

"Well, if you put it that way..." Bannon nods as the gears in his head begin to turn. "All right, I'll go suggest to them that we stay here as official Tilean liaisons!"

Bannon then strides out of the room to send word back to Command. Parker gives you a little wink before following him out.

"I'm glad that you've decided to stay with us." Lord Artois gives you a respectful nod. "Breton must prepare for war, and, no offense is meant, but I find your steeds a little... underequipped."

"I'm sorry about that, sir." You frown.

"Well, that's why we are here to rectify this problem!" Lord Artois nods to Willem. "Willem will show you my personal armory. Given the service you have shown us, I will allow you to take possession of one of my prized relics."

"My Lord-" Willem gasps.

"It is my decision." Lord Artois says firmly and turns to the rest of your platoon. "As for the rest of you, my royal engineers will give each and every one of your steeds a personal overhaul. They will be almost completely different machines afterwards!"

"Thank you, sir!" Axel smiles.

"Th-thank you!" Alfie bows her head.

"The old girl always did need a bit of repair work." Rock grins.

"Thank you." Alex says simply.

"Now, this way!" Willem waves at you to follow him. He leads you out of the war room and to a large preparation area where Lord Artois' party had set up camp. There, you see a large number of VT weapons laying about.

"Please, have a look!" Willem says proudly. "These are the finest weapons that have served the Artois family well for years!"

THE SILVER LANCE
An immaculately built, silver lance that can be mounted on a VT. In addition to the contact charge located at the tip for close in attacks, the Silver Lance can also be fired like a missile. Wires connecting the lance to the VT allow the gunner to control the flight of the missile. The armor piercing tip is guaranteed to pierce even the thickest of armor plating. It is boasted that this weapon has never missed its mark.

THE SCREAMING CHOIR
A set of several dozen rocket tubes that can be mounted above the VT. This allows the the VT launch a destructive volley of fire in a wide area. However, being unguided, this weapon is highly inaccurate. The rockets' small size also makes them unsuitable against armored or hardened targets. It is said the screams this weapon makes can send the enemy running in fear.

DRAGONBREATH
A set of six recoilless rifles that can be mounted atop a VT. They can launch rocket propelled projectiles at high velocities, capable of destroying all but the most heavily armored of targets. This particular system is also has incendiary material incorporated in the warhead, bathing the impact zone with unquenchable flame.

Well, dragonsbreath provides an incendiary element, which would absolutely fuck infantry.

The choir would be great for it, too, but it also runs a huge risk of collateral damage or friendly fire.

DB is more versatile, really. And since the 76 mm is pretty fucking good at its job currently, we need to pick up a new trick or two. Overspecialization can be bad.

Even if we face something with armor we cannot defeat, we can knock out limbs or even weaponry with well placed shots. Or outmaneuver them flat out.

Kill them with fire. This will burn zombie hordes, and also punch holes in enemy VTs while setting them on fire to crash into zombie hordes. We're a sniper VT, remember? Let's do some long-range damage!

Well, there's no doubt it would be effective as fuck, but even with it's reputation of "never missing", as the projectile can be tracked with the eye unaided, a very nimble VT (something that Breton apparently lacks almost entirely) could conceivably dodge aside of it at the last moment.

I have no doubt that, in a real fight, the Panther model VT would absolutely fucking destroy us.

Still. Do love me some guided munitions, but it won't make much of a difference in my mind.
>>
We ought to put some claymores or similar strapped to the legs. Pop them off when surrounded by enemy infantry.

As for the dragonsbreath, pop out from behind a hill, salvo fire or fire against independent targets (Troop transporters, supply trucks, VT transporters, etc) pop-pop-pop-pop, then manuever back into cover for reloading.

Similar to a recoillless rifle carrier used in Vietnam

(con't)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M50_Ontos

"Consistently reported excellent results when they used the Ontos for direct fire support against infantry..."

AND its a tank-destroyer (I still think it is b/c incendiary rounds work ok against armor if you hit it right) . All that and a bag of chips.
>>
>>42468657
I agree with you there, but I still had to vote for the Dragonbreath. Anything pulpy enough to be MLRSed to death needs to be dealt with by another VT, our infantry compliment, or chopped with the Ma Deuce we have on the coax mount. If the battle seriously comes down to us having to MLRS a massive enemy infantry rush, things have already gone to hell.

And if things have gone to hell, we might as well tear open the ground and set the world on fire with some incendiary rounds.

>>42468606
I like it too, but it's one-shot without any hope of reload. We already have a pretty good hole-punching cannon on our VT, and if the Dragonbreath fires rocket-propelled projectiles too... it's gonna do a mean number on anything it hits. At the very least, it will soften up the armor by superheating it so that our 76mm can blow through.

If we're being frugal, we could always try to get our hands on a double-barrelled shotgun (can't imagine it being too hard to find), and saw off the stock and the barrel to fit our needs.

Maybe get a combination gun if we want to be able to use a variety of ammunition.

"How about THAT." You say, pointing to the set of six recoilless rifles, the head of each barrel fashioned to look like a dragon's mouth. "That looks like it's got a story behind it."

"Ah! The Dragonsbreath!" Willem nods. "A good choice. This was used to great effect to suppress the rebellious Mountain Clans, as well as quite a number of peasant uprisings. It was quite the effective weapon!"

"I'm sure it was." Tarin says as she walks forward and gently runs a hand along one of the barrels. "Looks difficult to reload, though."

"Yes. They'd have to be manually reloaded after fire. That's why there's six." Willem confirms. "However, if you do manage to use them all up, we will have squires prepared to resupply you if you call for them."

"I guess it's the perk of royalty." You whistle. "How soon can you get it on Clementine?"

"Before the night is out. These weapons were designed to able to be mounted on any steed, after all!" Willem says happily.

"That's great." You smile.

"Anyways, I must part ways here. There's much work to be done!" Wilem says. "I trust you know your way back?"

"Yeah." You nod. "See you later then."

Willem then jogs off to a small knot of squires, rallying them to start doing the modification work.

"So, what do we do now?" Tarin asks as she watches the tournament grounds were slowly being dismantled.

Make sure we're not getting court-martialed. Also, let's find out how the homefront is doing. The Reiklanders have to have been pushing hard while we were having fun jousting and playing James Bond.

>Go see if you can find Hess before she leaves. You never got a proper chance to say goodbye.
But be discreet. If her superior officers catch us, not only are we in trouble, SHE will wind up stuffed in the deepest, darkest hole they can find. I think we avoided any suspicion of her "throwing the match" by absolutely wrecking her VT, but if she's caught fraternizing with us, she will be doomed.

Somebody run over to /k/ and ask them what a good alternate-history 1940s pulp-action tank officer sidearm would be.

I think pic related would be pretty good. 45ACP, some nice flair, easy to find ammo for (hopefully), and good power without breaking your wrist.
>>
>>42469221
You can get it smaller by shaving off most of the barrel, you're only using it as a hold-out, after all.

Rifle caliber rounds are bigger than pistol caliber, and they do make .50 cal pistol rounds far as I can tell.

But I haven't slept in two days. So I could be delusional.

All this talk about crew weapons to get, but why a shotgun? That range dropoff could be problematic. Grab an SMG, grab a carbine--something compact that we can stash with a couple extra mags and use in addition to a service pistol while all the while having a decent range.
>>
you know what would be cool.

A shotgun/UZI combo.
>>
>>42469273
You have no clue. You think of .50 BMG and think it could fit in a handgun reasonably. FUCK NO. Your .50 Desert Eagle is .50 AE, far smaller. And it's a shit round. Just use a SMG, you don't need a holdout.

>>
>>42469305
Actually, if you really wanted to, you could fit a .50 BMG into a handgun.

Only two or three in a revolver type set up, and still have it smaller than the M3.

M3 is 22.8 inches long without the stock IIRC, and the .50 BMG is about 5 and a half inches long, and just short of an inch in diameter.

The .45 ACP is about half the diameter of the .50 BMG, so while it would be twice as thick of a gun, it could certainly be shorter.

Of course, it would fuck your arm seven ways to sunday, and be unwieldy as all hell, but you could do it.

"We should go say goodbye to Hess." You say. "I never really did get a chance to properly say goodbye to her."

"Really?" Tarin raises an eyebrow. "Wouldn't the rest of her party... disagree?"

"It's not like they can kill us." You point out. "They'd never risk doing such a thing here."

"Possibly." Tarin frowns. "But there's still a big risk. They're still the enemy, after all."

"Well, Hess is good at separating from her handlers." You shrug. "I think she could use a bit of help this time."

"Fine." Tarin sighs. "Let's go."

The two of you head over to where the Reikland delegation had camped. Already, you can see them packing up all of their gear and belongings. However, around their perimeter, you could see quite a number of Breton guards, bearing both Lord Artois and the King's crests. No doubt there to make sure they didn't cause trouble and left the country peacefully. That was good for you. The Reiks wouldn't try anything in that case.

"So, how are we handling this?" Tarin asks, eyeing the Reikland soldiers scurrying too and fro. You could not immediately see Hess anywhere, though you could plainly see Gregor standing in the midst of the ruckus, directing the packing as efficiently as he could.

"Looks like it's a sneaking mission." You note.

"Really?" Tarin nearly groans.

"C'mon! It'll be like old times! Like sneaking into Old Man Tucket's moonshine still!" You say happily.

"And remember when we nearly got shot by Old Man Tucket?" Tarin reminds you.

"But we DIDN'T. And that's all that matters." You say.

"Honestly..." Tarin shakes her head.

The two of you head down to the Reikland camp. The Breton knights don't pay you any heed, and let you pass without any sort of protest. Thankfully, you manage to find a blind spot in the camp's perimeter defense. After all, the Reiklanders were too busy packing up to bother guarding the camp.

"Where do we go?" Tarin whispers.

"Probably there." You point to one of the larger and fancier looking tents, with gold trim and heraldry on it. "That definitely looks like Hess' tent."

"I guess so." Tarin nods in agreement.

For reference, so we can all bask in the glory of those crits once more...

>"Without its leg for support, Hess' VT goes down and goes down HARD, smashing into the dirt with a loud CRUNCH. You can see the hull and the armor plates warp and crack from the impact. However, it doesn't end there. Thanks to Hess' speed, her wrecked VT still has a surplus of momentum, and her VT continues to roll on the ground, the second leg snapping off from the force and the main hull receiving a punishing battering as it clatters along the dirt like a discarded toy."

I think everyone here is missing the point that the argument was about what constitutes the "head" of a VT.

What does, anyway? Because arguably it would be the most valuable section, which if you generalize, would be the main body section, since everything is in it, but that's like saying that the entire chassis of a sherman is the important part, you know?

Oh, and, everyone is a dickhead, this is 4chan, no one here is normal.

"I guess it has to be this way, huh?" You say sadly.

"Of course. That's the way things are." Hess nods, not looking sad at all. "However, there is one thing I'd like to give you!"

Hess then digs into her pockets and pulls out a small piece of paper, and realize that it's a map.

"Directions to my family castle." Hess says happily. "If we fail to meet each other on the frontlines, head here, and I'll be sure to come running!"

You're... you're honestly not sure how to respond to something like that. She was practically inviting you into her own home.

"I'm actually looking forward to it!" Hess smiles. "Until then!"

Hess gives you a quick hug before her ears perk up at shouting in the distance.

"Uh oh, Gregor is coming! Better hurry!" Hess hisses, pushing you and Tarin away back to the edge of the camp. "Until we face each other again! I vill not lose next time!"

"So you say." You retort before ending up at the edge of the camp again. Hess gives you a little smile before spinning around and marching back in, no doubt to deal with Gregor. You think it was best to get as much distance between you and this camp as possible.

"Let's go." Tarin says, knowing what you were thinking.

All-right, Hess gave us directions to her home!

Plus, since Roy and Tarin are nobility now, this means it'll actually be practical for Tarin to defeat Hess in honorable oil-wrestling and claim her as a handmaiden.

"Let's go find Parker." You say. "It's been a while since we heard anything about what's going on back home."

"Sure thing." Tarin nods.

The two of you make your way back to the main castle, where the communications center is. Of course, Parker is there, fiddling with the radios. She spins around on her chair when you and Tarin enter, apparently having heard you. Sharp ears, you figure.

"Ah, Roy, Tarin! Come in!" Parker says happily. "It's not often I get visitors in here!"

"Bannon's not here?" You ask, looking around.

"Nah, Bannon doesn't really like talking to Command or the Colonel for too long. He usually just routes his reports through me." Parker shrugs. "I don't mind, really. As CO, it's in his power, after all."

>So, what's the word back home?

"So, what's the word back home?" You ask. "Any updates on the front?"

"Well, thankfully, the line overall has been holding." Parker explains, rolling out a map of the Tilea/Reikland border. "Reikland made a few more small pushes. Thankfully, they've mostly been repelled, but they did manage to advance a bit deeper into our territory in some places. Nothing too serious. However, there's one bigger problem."

"Which is?" Tarin asks.

"I don't know how, but word of Reikland's undead corps and brain controlled VTs leaked out." Parker sighs. "All of Tilea is in a panic."

"I thought the idea that Reikland would resort to such measures would galvanize the populace." You frown.

"You'd think, but that's not the case." Parker shakes her head. "There's a wave of fear sweeping through the country. Lots of rumor and hearsay going around, too. Nobody's too certain how Reikland's making these things, so people think it might be caused by some sort of virus or chemical weapon, and it might be used against them someday."

"...so some people want to negotiate with Reikland to prevent that." You conclude.

"Correct. Now, we're not only fighting Reikland, but our country's own public opinion." Parker sighs. "Our propaganda department really has its work cut out for it."

"Well, that seems really dumb in my opinion." You frown.

"People fear the unknown." Parker shrugs. "There's not a lot you can do about except try and educate them."

"Still, it seems pretty silly from our perspective." Tarin says.

"That's true, but that's because we've actually fought these things face to face." Parker adds. "All the people back on the homefront have to go on are their imaginations, and imagination is honestly one of the most dangerous weapons on the planet."

"I guess." You sigh, and you remember the map Hess had given you. Maybe Parker could do something with it?

Then again, should you really tell her about it?

My guess is that Hess may have been trying to tell us something other than trying to get cozy with us.

Keep in mind that she had the map already prepared, and pulled it out at a moment's notice. She didn't draw it for us on the spot, meaning she fully expected to give us the map on short notice.

You opt to not tell Parker about the map. After all, Hess entrusted it to you personally. It seemed kind of wrong telling somebody else about it. You keep the map safely tucked away in your pocket.

"Is something the matter, Roy?" Parker asks.

Damn, she really was pretty perceptive.

"No, it's nothing." You shake your head.

"Well, okay. Better go get some rest then." Parker turns back to her radio duty. "We'll be heading out to the front once the overhauls on our VTs are done. Expect to get back into the thick of it."

Finally, you think. Time to take the fight directly to Reikland again.

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week. Don't forget the Cyberpunk Idol Special on Sunday and Ace Combat on Friday!

Thanks for running, Merc. It was a bit rocky at times, and public opinion was sharply divided on a few choices, but this was still a good run! Can't wait to see that Dragonsbreath in action against the Reikland VTs!
