Welcome back to NeolithicChalcolithic Pokemon Quest.

Link for new players:

A quick summary if you want to participate/can't remember the older threads
You are Cain, a 17 year old hunter gatherer from the Endless Forest. A mysterious forest fire separated you from your tribe, and you have so far been unable to find any hints as to their location. Cain journeyed into a mountain range, which is covered in snow for much of the year. Along the way, he befriended a Swinub and named him Dire. Fighting together, the new friends managed to kill a Beedrill. Further up on the mountain, Cain met an old man and helped butcher a slowpoke. Helping the man carry the meat up the mountain, Cain learned of another pokedex in the man's village. Arranged to see the holder of the Pokedex, Cain participated in the village's annual celebration of summer that was in no way meant to be sexual, it was literally just a fountain

I was wondering how you guys picture Cain, seeing how we don't have any real physical discription.

As promised, there will be a drunken Dire in this episode.

I've been seeing Cain as thin but muscular, sort of a runner's build to fit his nomadic origins. Close-cut hair to prevent parasites from getting a hold, you do not want to see what sort of lice exist in a world where 90% of the arthropods have lasers. Coloration is probably something vaguely middle-eastern, to fit with the name Cain. Clothes are just a basic shirt and pants, leather or simple wool, but brighter colors than would be available in our world due to the more colorful nature of the Pokemon they're harvested from compared to our animals.

Good to know. I'll try to incorporate that into the story.

"Um, okay. Thanks Cato," You say, then start walking. A few people spot the street, talking in bright clusters of red. They wave drunkenly at you, before turning back to their friends.

Along the way, your Pokemon manages to find you. It's nose lowered to the ground, the brown ball of fur snuffles through crowds blindly. He manages to knock over one man that's particularly enjoyed the festival, slurring something about a living rock. Finally, Dire catches up with you. The Pokemon bumps it's pink nose into your bare foot, leaving a purple liquid behind when he bounces off. Raising his head, Dire stares out of a mop of fur with eyes glazed with drink. How he managed to get at the alcohol, you do not know. Given his size, even a small amount would be enough.

Lifting the drunken boar to rest on your shoulder, Dire greets you with a small squeal. Yet another thing to put onto the pages of your book. Loaded with your friend and pokedex, you follow Cato's directions through the village. It's a strange environment, made of dead stone and wood in place of lush green vegetation and skins. How people survive within it is a mystery.

You reach Rosalia's house quickly, a small wooden building set off from the rest of the village. A wall of chest level plants blocks entry, it's sharp thorns hidden in the dark green leaves and red flowers.

>A thin tree blocks you path! It looks like it can be CUT!

You step around the bush like a rational person, then pass into the building. A girl dressed in red is hunched over a wooden table, scribbling on a piece of snow white skin. Her short brown hair is tied back with a piece of hide, a stub of a ponyta tail with flyaway hairs sticking out.

Close one

Transitioning Dire from your shoulder, you cough slightly. The girl looks over, the feather in her hand moving independently. Her eyes stand out, a deep green like tropius leaves, in a round face.

"What is it?" She asks bluntly. The feather keeps moving.

"Uh," caught off guard, you pause for a moment, "Cato told me you have a book of beasts. He said that you might like to look at mine too, so he sent me here. I'm Cain, of the Blueskin tribe of the Endless Forest."

Her eyes pass over you, calculating innumerable things. The pools of green halt at your waist, and you shift slightly. It takes a moment for you to realize that your pokedex is right there.

"Okay. Do you have a stylus?" She asks. You nod, and slide the case's plant leather strap from your shoulder. The braided skin is made from the characteristic blue organic vines of Tangela, a Pokemon hunted specifically for the vines. It's meat is close to useless, used only for fish bait.

Pulling the book from its case, you carefully hand it to the girl. You squat on the opposite side of the table, resting on your heels. With great apprehension, she opens it and thumbs through the pages. "Amazing. How long have you been working on it?"

"Around two years? People in my tribe have been adding to it for decades. I lost a lot of the pages though." Rosalia pauses when you say that, thinking of the knowledge lost.

"I'm sorry. Mine is by no means as complete, but if you would like, you may copy the pages of it." She pauses, then pulls a thick sheaf of the same snow colored parchment from an alcove. Pulling two sheets from it, she hands them to you along with her pokedex. It's much smaller than your own, but still well made.

"How long have you been working on your's?" You ask after finishing the two pages(Cubchoo family and Amaura family), the pictures redrawn in the reds and blacks of your kit. The originals are in slate grey ink, but it should not effect them overly much.

"Seven years." Your eyes shoot up from the table, looking over the girl. You'd guess she's close to 16 name days, no more than 17. No wonder so many of the pages are in the same cramped handwriting, over half. What's more, they are incredible extensive. Apparently, Pidgeot fly even fast than the sound of their bodies.

"How'd you get so many? Most of these dont seem like they'd let you watch them."

The girl's face lights up here, a topic she obviously doesn't get to talk about often. "On the northern slope, there's a large lake. I go out onto it in a coracle, and wait for the Pokemon to come for drinks. If it's something new, I'll try to follow it for a few days. How did you do it?"

"Watched them from the canopies usually. Made getting away if they were aggressive easier. Some of them though, I had to get into the water with if I wanted to get a good sense of their sizes. Water can make them look smaller or larger, or sometimes there'd be a film of muck that I couldn't see past; so I'd need to get down and close. If they were predators, I'd try and lure them out onto shore with some meat, or at least close enough to the shallows to get a good idea of how they looked." You remember the vivid encounter with the Feraligatr two years ago. If not for that handy vine you'd secured, you may have come away less an arm. Your tribe had had the last laugh though, the creature's meat sustaining them for the better part of the week, while the hide, teeth and bones had made valuable tools and weapons.

Well that's unexpected

"In the Endless Forest, the branches were the easiest way to travel. I'd hide up in canopy to get my first look, before deciding to get closer." You answer, recalling the peaceful days lounging in the branches for hours on end. A short rope, topped with a pair of wooden hooks, would often hold you while you spied on the herds of Sawsbuck that passed through the forest like a river of leaves.

"Clever. I will have to remember that when I travel to the Endless Forest."

You start work on another page, and are suprised to see a drawing of Dire. Two other pictures are on the page; one of a tusked Pokemon that looks much like a larger and humped version of Dire, the other a massive Pokemon as tall as a small Tropius, but with a massive pair of tusks.

You look down at the page, then at the sleeping Dire at your feet. Back at the page, now back to Dire. Blessed Celabi, that is awesome.

"Hey, uh, is my Pokemon going to turn into one of these any time soon?" You ask, then spin the pokedex around and point at the 'mamoswine'.

Rosalia takes a moment to look at Dire as he sleeps, then looks down at the page again. "I doubt it. He doesn't have any of the characteristics of a Swinub close to evolution. If he starts growing defined tusks, he will be close to the change."

Huh, well, that's somewhat reassuring. As much as you like the idea of riding such a massive creature, Dire doesn't seem like the type to mellow with age. When he isn't drunk off his ass, he's full of energy and constantly seeking attention. At the size of a waterskin, it's not likely to cause damage to houses.

You begin copying down the page on the Swinub family, taking extra care with it. This page, even if it is not entirely your own work, will be one of the most extensive. You write a small note on behavior section, adding some of the knowledge gained from the scant time you've know Dire.

"You mentioned you wanted to go to the Endless Forest. Why not stay here?" You ask after finishing the page.

"Look at me. Notice anything, I don't know, odd?" Quick Cain, think of something...DAMNIT, not that!

"YOU HAVE TINY BOOBIES!" You shout. Her face contorts with rage, a deadly fire growing behind the green lenses.

Suddenly, the door bursts open. A massive, four armed Pokemon splinters the wood into kindling, small pieces of it stuck in its skin. The four arms grab onto your arms and legs, and pulls your body onto his shoulders. The monstrous Pokemon begins spinning. Just as you're about to black out, he slams your limp body into the table. Gore paints the walls red, while the Pokemon circles you, waving his hands in front of his face.
You shake off the sudden image of your death. You pray to Arceus that such a horror never is inflicted on you.

"You have brown hair. Everyone else has red hair." Good job Cain. Everything else you thought is going to be locked away in that little place in your head.

"Well, I'll be heading back to the Endless Forest soon. If you'd like, we could travel together." You suggest, thinking that she might help with Dire. Growing up here, she probably knows a lot more about his species than you.

Her eyes narrow momentarily, before returning to normal. "Thank you. I would like that." She pauses, then goes back to copying the pokedex. You do the same, slowly working your way through her notes.

"Have you actually seen the evolved form of Dire? What were they like?" You ask as you finish another sheet, and take a moment to stretch. Candles and a small fire in the kitchen area light the house in red, which seems somewhat festive. Dire is still asleep at your feet, snoring softly with each breath. As you watch, he starts waving his feet in the air, much like when he runs. His tongue flops out of his mouth, panting slightly as he stops moving.

"Yes. A sounder of Piloswine and Swinub will often be accompanied by a number of Mamoswine, at a ratio of one mamoswine to every twenty Piloswines. The largest Mamoswine lead the sounder, as they are often the oldest and know of the locations for food. De to the size of the Pokemon, they knock over trees so that Swinub and Piloswine can eat the nuts and acorns of the tree. Mamoswine appear to like the roots more than the rest of the species, though I could not figure out why. Conventional knowledge says that they like the dirt just as much as the actual food."

"Okay, good to know. So, do you have any Pokemon? Dire helped me a lot when my food ran out." You say, petting the subject of the conversation.

"I don't have any Pokemon, no. Perhaps I will find one elsewhere." She sounds almost wistful, as if she's off in her own world now. "How common are Bulbasaur in the Endless Forest? They sound interesting"

"They're fairly rare. Someone managed to steal an egg once, but it was still a newborn when the fire..."

why that over a sling slings have much easier ammo requirements can throw berrys and i hear are easier to use. Both do similar amounts of damage IRL.

I vote Atalatl. It's going to do more damage than a sling and it will help when we face something a bit more resistant to high velocity pebbles.

Atalatl sounds like a pokemon name
>>
>>42465584
>Atalatl use arrow!
>*Throws Atalatl and pierces a bidoof's head*
>Critical hit!
>>
I'd say go with the Atlatl. Better range, more damage, and easy enough to make the arrows/spears out of fallen branches.

On the other hand, the sling means that so long as there's a rock at-hand small enough to fit in the pocket of the sling, we'll always have ammo.
>>
>>42465517
I vote sling
>>42465552

I like the piercing factor of the Atalatl versus the bludgeoning factor of the sling.

>>
>>42465705
also remember that the sling can chuck berries so that we can send them to pokemon whe we cant or dont want to get close to to bait them. it can probably also chuck proto pokeballs.
>>42465731
I dig that but i like the slings versatile ammo.
>>
>>42465705
Actually, changing my vote to sling. It can be used as a melee weapon as well as ranged, and it can also be used as a sort of hammer. Overall it's got more versatility than the atlatl.

>>
Weren't we supposed to craft daggers out of the beedrill arms we got?
>>
>>42472853
I had to doublecheck to be sure, and bee stingers are made of chitin. You can't carve those and still keep the sharpness and toughness.

It would be less of a dagger and more like very small lances.
>>
>>42472899
The image Hickory used and the way the beedrills were described sort of imply that beedrill arms are more like knives than lances. Also, he kind of said we could do it.
>>
>>42472941
Anyway, if it's not possible, we can just craft it into a spear.
>>
>>42472941
I haven't seen the pic, but real(and I assume "realistic") bee stingers are indeed barbed. Those barbs just aren't designed for slashing motions. Rather, they are HORRIBLE at it, since they are blunted in every direction except one.

>>42472951
But yes, more than serviceable, a stinger that big makes a damn good spear. If we get into the metal age, they can probably still remain competitive by finding ways to retrieve intact paralysis sacs.
>>
>>42472985
>>42472941
Of course, OP might not have known that and I just screwed everyone by mentioning it.
>>
>>42473138
You did.

Not really, the Beedrill lances are made of a chitin/ceramic composite(yay, alliteration!). This allows you to knap them much like stone, but with one major difference. Thanks to the wonders of evolution, Beedrill lances are incredibly strong when hit at the point. This is due to a inner layer of compressible cells, which cushion the impact. These same cells also allow the Pokemon to inject poison, as the rapid compassion of the cells puts pressure on the poison sacks, which forces it up through a series of tubes.

So, yes, you crafted the spear and dagger from the Beedrill lances. However, you lack the means to refill the poison sacks at the moment. They are on par with flint blades for cutting, but slightly better when stabbing.
>>
>>42474030
Wait, we already did the crafting?
>>
Also, were the stingers more like http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/42308852/images/1441494349065.jpg
Or more like http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/42332769/images/1441571612186.jpg
?
Because I like to imagine that it's both, and that the latter is simply a higher level beedrill

*can craft

Messed up when typing, and didn't see it cause 4chan is annoying. You can craft them, but are yet to. Both your spear and knife are workable stone at the moment
>>42474075
The poison sacks are housed in the brownish part, you guys still have the physical sacks, but the poison drained out when you cut them off.
>>
>>42474149
I guess it'd be better to craft a spear if that's the shape.
>>
>>42474149
Did we also get the abdominal stinger, or just the arm stingers?
>>
>>42474370
Just arm. The tail stinger is launched and rapidly regrown when using Pin Missile, but after the move is used, it takes a while for the stinger to regrow. It is advised that you force the Beedrill to launch its stinger, then advance before it can recuperate, when fighting them.
