I rise from my bed, tired by every definition of the word and yet sleep is something I can hardly even imagine. An unwelcome change afflicted upon me by Mistress' blunt and yet vague words of warning. Words that still echo through my restless mind, cruel and uncaring of my desperate need for sleep.

"Will it be dangerous?"

"Extremely. Good night."

My Rite of Initiation, which I must complete for Mistress will fully accept me as her witch apprentice, is to take place the night after tomorrow... or maybe it's today by now? And still all I know is it is to take place on the night of the Joining and is apparently "extremely dangerous." There are many things I am afraid of, like spiders, toads, thunder, and of course Big Sis' wrath, but I am not afraid to admit that I thoroughly terrified.

But who am I going to admit it to? My best friend is still out of town with her father, Big Sis has rushed off on another adventure to save the world - or was it just a country this time? - and I need to keep my plan secret from Papa or he might suspect that I want to use "unfair" methods to help him defeat his rival blacksmith. How am I supposed to be brave on my own?

I slowly open the window of my bedroom, careful not to wake Papa - though if a bit of noise would wake him he would surely have been woken by his own snoring already! - hoping but not really believing that some fresh air will help clear my mind. The sight of Mara, the Azure Sister, proudly shining her gentle light upon the town, only serves to feed my mind with visions of the perilous trials she and her sister are to witness me undergo. And if this goes on, I will be performing those trials sleepless and beaten.

I need to do something.

My name is Nadja, and I am afraid.

I can't stand any more of this. I need to get out of this room, I need something to distract myself. Out, that's where to go. After all, what could possibly happen on a perfectly innocent evening walk through Hinde? It's the safest place I've ever known! I'm already two steps out of the door when it hits me, the realization that my tired mind has led me to make an inexcusably stupid mistake.

It's cold!

I rush back inside and grab my favorite coat - soft, warm, and safe, it's like having a papa you can bring with you anywhere you go! - button it up nice and tight, and swing the hood over my head for good measure. Sure, it's not even Fall yet, but you shouldn't underestimate the cold of night!

Rearmed and safe from the elements, I begin my second foray into the dark. Well, truth be told, between the street lights and Mara's light my room was probably much darker than the streets, but I can't lock the door to the town so it's way different! And even if it's my safe and cozy home the streets really do seem quite intimidating now that I'm out here. But so does my bed.

With no real destination at this hour of night, the choice of direction really is meaningless. On a whim, I decide that down is the way to go, the direction where most of the homes, including Amalia's, can be found.

The next test of my nerves immediately presents itself as I take my first step down the stairs and the sound of my boot against the smooth surface echoes back and forth, startling me and nearly causing me to slip! You wouldn't notice at all in the day with all the sounds around you just how far the walls of the houses can carry even the slightest sound, but now that the peddling merchants, playing children, and cheerful birds have all fallen silent, the only sounds to be heard are my own.

I am halfway across the town when I see him. Nothing more than a silhouette, but I know it's him. The boy, the strange one, the same one I saw yesterday. What is someone his age doing out this late. And...why is he... staring at me?

With animals in the forest, staring is like a contest of dominance, Amalia taught me that. So if an animal is staring at you, you have to stare back at it to show you're scarier than it is. And boys are kind of like wild animals sometimes, so it should work on them too!

I take a deep breath, and prepare myself to stay as still as a statue. I just hope I'm better at it than he is. He looks like he can run a lot faster than me, and I definitely don't want him to do nasty-mean boy things to me, like pulling my hair or slipping spiders down the back of my coat!

I barely suppress the shivers as I begin imagining the feeling of spiders trickling down my back, creeping around my back, spreading all over my body... No, no, no!

"EEEEEE!"

My hands reach my mouth far too late to silence the scream. Stupid, stupid, stupid, it's just my imagination! Now I've gone and ruined it and he's sure to-

Wait, he's running away? Did I... scare HIM?

>Chase him! I have to apologize for frightening him!

The way this character is turning out, which I should add is absolutely nothing like the character I was expecting to write so you'd damn well better like your girly girl, I'm starting to have trouble even justifying her having the nerve to keep a secret from Papa at all. I guess I'll just call it power of love.

>>

Of course not. I look forward to having fun with her trying to be all witchy despite her nature. It'll probably be MUCH better this way.
>>
>>42458980
All i'm wondering is where we could have gotten a different personality, i mean we were kind of girly and all from the very beginning.
>>
>>42458421
I guess... I win? I win! Yay!

Still, I feel kind of bad for scaring him. I didn't mean to do that! But it's probably best I leave him alone, I might just scare him again. Though I don't really know why anyone would be afraid of me?

I decide to turn around and start to head up towards the upper part of town, where the town hall, barracks, and church is. If it wasn't so late, I could visit Kerstin & Klemens, but I don't think they'd appreciate that now. Maybe the night watch would like a visit? Though more likely, they'll tell me to go back home.

I notice my pace is much quicker now, though not because I'm afraid. On the contrary, I actually much better now. I guess it's comforting to know I'm not the only one who gets a little frightened out here at night. In fact, I feel a lot tougher and braver now. If I can feel this way tomorrow night, I'm sure to do great at my Rite. What a great feeling!

That is, right until I notice it. That wasn't an echo, no, I definitely heard steps behind me. I look back, but everything is still, nobody in sight at all. Only the empty market square, littered with empty stalls and crates lined up against the walls of every house. But I'm sure I didn't imagine it. And there are plenty of hiding spots in a town like this...

"Hello?" I call out.

As expected, nobody answers.

"Uhm, Strange Boy?" I don't think that's his name, but hopefully he'll know I'm talking to him, "I'm sorry if I scared you before. I ju-"
>>
>>42459576
A sudden, forceful push from behind promptly blows the wind out of me and sends the ground flying toward my face. No wait, it's probably the other way aro- OW!

Glistening cobblestones fill my entire vision as an uninvited hand closes shut around my mouth. There's a weight on my back, keeping me from standing back up.

"Don't even try to move." A boy's voice. The boy? Back for revenge?

"Mmmghmgh!" No no, he's going to do nasty boy things to me!

"No talking!" The voice sneers at me.

The weight shifts slightly, and I soon feel the warmth of his breath against my cheek. I tense up, imagining the thousand horrible things he could be planning to do. No spiders, I hope!

"Now, are you going to send me back?"

...Wha-? I don't know what he's talking about, but... I can't ask him if I can't speak?

I don't understand! Send him back? I don't even know where he came from! He seems really serious and will probably get really angry if I give him the wrong answer. But...what does he want to hear? Yes or no?

"Answer me!" He cries into my left ear, feeling like it's about to burst, pain merging with that coming from my forehead.

But why? I don't deserve this! I'm a good girl, I deserve praise and pretty things, not being hit in the head and yelled at! Who does this boy think he is, doing all these crazy things! What a meanie! Someone like him deserves to...

Yes, yes he does.

Well, I tried to warn him. Here goes.

I bite down, as hard as I can, though only managing to bite onto a bit of skin. Still, the effect is apparent as he quickly pulls his hand away, easing the weight on my back as he does so.

"What the fu-"

Using both hands and knees I push myself up from the ground, sending him stumbling to the ground beside where I was lying just a moment ago. He's grabbing his hand with the other, holding it up to his mouth, whimpering helplessly. I think I even see tears glimmering in his eyes.

It's strange, a moment ago I feared for my life and now instead...

It's such a strange feeling. On one hand, I'm angry about what he did. But, he's also just a child, like me, and he's hurting. Wouldn't it be wrong to hurt him more? Papa would definitely say so.

>>42460741
The boy looks up at me, eyes flaring with anger. Not distress. Not pleading for forgiveness. Anger.

"Fuck you, w- UNNNNGH"

The kick is swift, effective, and honestly feels good. For me.

"Stupid boy! I was going to help you, I was even going to forgive you, but you don't even feel sorry for what you did!"

He doesn't respond, both hands still clutched between his legs.

"What are you even doing, attacking random people in the streets? Are you crazy?"

He's still just lying there.

And now I'm starting to feel bad again. Even if he wasn't nice, this is... Mean! I'm the meanie now! But I don't want to be a meanie! Papa taught me to be nice, not mean! If Papa saw me now he would...

Papa would...

My knees give in and I stumble to the ground, landing flat on my butt. I feel my breath failing, I gasp desperately for air, the world slows down around me. The boy weakly lifts himself back unto his knees.

An eternity seems to pass as a hole grows in my stomach, growing larger. Finally, the void explodes and the pressure releases, pouring from my eyes. Air fills my lungs again, only to be quickly pushed out as I wail uncontrollably. Not cry, wail, like I remember doing many years ago when I got separated from big sis on a trip to the Imperial Capital and thought I'd never have a family again.

I wail, even after the boy has stood back up. I see him talking, but I don't listen. It's not important now.

The boy runs off to somewhere, but it's not important.

My eyes start hurting so bad I have to close them, but it's not important.

Time passes, but it's not important.

Because mean girls don't deserve a Papa or a big sis.

Suddenly I feel myself lifted off the ground. A soft voice whispers in my ear as I feel myself pressed gently against its soft chest. I stay there, in the comforting embrace, even as a soft bed arrives to offer itself to me. Even as I feel the thin layer of cloth between myself and the soft and warm become soaked, I stay.

When next I open my eyes, I find myself in a strange bed, bright light shining on my face. The room is well decorated, far more than mine, walls lined from end to end with fluffy toy animals, interrupted only by the bed I'm in and a sizable closet across from it. This room must belong to...

"Gee Nadja, about time!" Kerstin calls out the moment I step out of her room. "It's already noon, you know!"

I'm in the church. Kerstin's domain and to a much smaller extent, Klemens'. He's here too, head burrowed in books and silent as ever.

"Wait, noon? I need to go, I'm late!"

"You're welcome." Kerstin grunts in annoyance, promptly inducing a chuckle from Clemens behind her.

"Stuff it, ne-"

"Thank you, Kerstin! Thank you, Klemens!" I interrupt before they get each other going, and rush out the door, completely ignoring the beautiful glass mosaics decorating the temple, or the way the light refracts in these causes colorful rays to flow gently across the room over the course of the day, or the masterful painting lining each wall. They're not important now, because I'm late!

I rush through the town, right past my own house as I'm reminded that I haven't eaten yet, my stomach crying in despair at my negligence. It'll have to wait, because I'm late!

I rush past the lower quarter, barely acknowledging shouts from Klaus and Klarissa who appear to have received the dubious honor of patrolling the road, because I'm late!

I pay no mind as I hit the wall of rotten stench in the bog and almost fly up the stairs to knock on the door, ready to apologize deeply for my tardiness.

After a few minutes of banging, Mistress finally opens the door, rubbing her eyes sleepily.

"Nadja, why are you here so early? Oh well, I suppose since you're here I may as well make use of you."

"You remember the tea instructions I gave you yesterday, I assume?

Sleepiness says I have to end the thread soon, and this seems like the most appropriate point within reach. Tomorrow, we'll talk a lot more about what it means to be a witch and what it doesn't mean, since you guys seem eager to learn more about that sooner rather than later.

I aim to start the next thread same time tomorrow, so I hope to see you there!

>>42463030
Apologies, I unintentionally woke up far too early today so I don't think continuing much further will be healthy for me or the quest. On the upside, tomorrow I should have more energy, making this weekend effectively the opposite of the last one. Sort of.

>>42463204
Either she'd go the route "Even dad says i'm a bad girl now, therefore i must be." or it would lead to some sort of insanity in her/mental stuff.
>>
>>42463117
I don't personally see how that would be interesting.
>>
>>42463263
Your answer is >>42463250
It'd be an interesting turn for the character
>>
>>42463263
Well, it would bring a pretty big change in the story (at least for a while depending on if it's fixed or not) and i like changes i suppose. Especially the change between "niice and happy" to "grim dark" or reverse.
>>
I don't want to see a turn in the character when we've barely seen anything. Maybe a couple dozen threads down the line.
>>
>>42463317
Obviously, if we get that far anyway

>>42463296
>Especially the change between "niice and happy" to "grim dark" or reverse.
That's called tone whiplash. Stop liking bad things.
>>
>>42463317
Yeah, i didn't mean soon, just a change of pace some time pretty far ahead.
>>
>>42463338
Not sure if meant story tone or character tone.
>>
>>42463357
Meant mostly the emotions of the character(s).
>>
>>42463290
But it really doesn't seem like it could possibly result in anything interesting. It would completely remove any character motivation.
>>
>>42463385
Yeah that's what I thought. Dunno why people don't think you can't have a darker moe/hugbox quest.
>>
>>42463338
But it's great if used correctly and consistently
Just look at Gintama
>>
>>42463418
So you know the ins and out of the characters motivations? Maybe Nadja would use it as an excuse to hex people since she's already "bad".
>>
>>42463426
Because it usually goes horribly in quest format, Look at Re:Kobold.
>>
>>42463484
Oh god, you're one of those guys who hates that quest. Lotus never promised a hugbox, everyone just expected one.

If Nadja pisses off her father, the only proper response is to desperately try to reconcile.

>>42463114
It is as you see. I don't track character traits numerically. If your goal is to help Nadja become tougher, simply doing wicked things repeatedly won't do that. She'd just be insane if she kept doing something she hates.

It's more of a way for me to measure roughly in which directions you'd like the character to develop, so that I can try to facilitate such developments.

I will note however, no matter how Nadja develops the quest will never, ever, be grimdark. Serious emotions, sometimes sure, but even if Nadja does manage to LEARN to act truly wicked, she must never stop being cute about it.

Cute is imperative.
>>
>>42463454
Why would she act badly on purpose just because she thinks she was acting badly before?
>>
>>42463531
>this punctuation

Yep, I made the right call ending the thread. Good night!
>>
>>42463418
Well that's hopefully where we come in and makes a decision for her. For example: Either we choose that she thinks since she's already done bad things and she's bad so we might as well do more. Or maybe we think that she should flee into the woods where noone can call her bad things. Or we choose for her to think more and more "crazy" things to develop her wicked side. There are a lot of things we could do there that we'd never be able to as we are now.

>>42463484
Lotus didn't really do things the right way though, he'd plan ahead to do stuff that was nearly impossible to aviod just to get his version of what should happen. There are different ways to go about things.

>>42463531
I can get behind crazy cute.
>>

>>
>>42463531

>>42463544
Because she's bad in her father's eyes, since she's already bad she might as well do bad things if they have results
>>
>>42463531
I love you.

I don't want Nadja to be wicked so much as capable of chewing someone out for attacking her without feeling bad about it.
>>
Can we have a chance to meet her friends that isn't placed alongside meeting Mistress? It's clear our priorities place Mistress higher, friends won't win like this.
>>
>>42463571
>Well that's hopefully where we come in and makes a decision for her. For example: Either we choose that she thinks since she's already done bad things and she's bad so we might as well do more. So, basically you want to remove any semblance of a story or a collective goal?
>>
>>42463656
I think she's making us hers
But that's quite normal with magic and apprenticeships so I am okay with it
Also it's my fetish

I see what you're saying and I agree she seems to have achieved a monopoly. It's honestly just poor management on my part as I should have seen that coming, so now I need to consider what the best way of rectifying the issue is. But it will have to come after the Joining.
>>
>>42463727
I honestly don't see what else you could mean, the reason we'd never be able to do those things as we are now is because they are out of character, and detrimental to our goal, and the only way to change that is to change character and throw away the goal.
>>
>>42463912
A couple more "Mistress doesn't need you, what do?" votes would do it. It just feels worse cause our attempt to meet sis was met with her being absent.

what the fuck this captcha difficulty
>>
>>42464016
Our current goal is a very fragile one, helping our father is something that would be possible relatively fast. Or on the other hand, if he forbids us from it/disaprooves about it then suddenly we're without a goal. So i'd say we need some bigger goal later on anyways.
>>
>>42464016
This>>42464099
Also good characters are people, their motivations and personalities change over time.
>>
>>42464099
Becoming a fine witch is enough goal. We don't need more than that.

I'm looking forward to Mistress's opinion of our helping dad goal. She'll probably scold us for wanting to be a witch for something like that.
>>
>>42464132
Basically this, our goal right now is something that's brought from our desire to help our father, but that could change just as fast if we feel like someone else needed help more or something like that.

>>42464151
I'll just say that i disagree, just "being a fine witch" would feel a bit too booring for me, things will happen in the story and those things may reveal a goal for our character that she didn't know she had and so on. And also, being a fine witch could mean a lot if things since witches are probably vastly different in their definition of fine.
>>
>>42464099
Why would he disapprove help? He might disapprove the methods but that just makes helping him more difficult.
>>
>>42464245
The methods which we are trying to help him with are the methods he disapproves, which means that then our witch learning would be for nothing since our whole current goal for becoming a witch is to use it for our father.
>>
>>42464338
We do not currently have any methods to help him, being a witch opens up a lot of possibilities, and they're probably not all bad.
>>
>>42464338
>for nothing
If Nadja seriously believes witching would be useless if she couldn't help her father, I hope Mistress smacks the shit out of her. God damn.
>>
>>42464099
New goals are fine, but not having any is extremely problematic.
>>
>>42464411
Well, our father doesn't really want help from anything that has to do with magic in any way from how i read it so that would be a problem considering all things witches do are kind of magical.

>>42464452
So do i.

>>42464476
Yeah.
>>
>>42464476
We're a witch apprentice. We won't be without a goal as long as we're learning to be the witch.

It might not be the most glamorous goal, but it's a goal.
>>
>>42464500
I think he just doesn't want anything dishonorable, which probably encompasses most whitchcraft, but I'm sure there's something.
>>
>>42464778
Well I'm of the thought that what he doesn't know won't hurt him.
>>
>>42464878
Yeah, but we should still try not to do anything too bad.
>>
>>42464878
Indeed, if we're actually going to still try to help him after we've learned enough to do it (which we probably will), we have to make sure there's no suspicious thing about it at all.
>>
>>42464951
we're not gonna kill anyone, maybe a bad luck hex, or a laxative potion....
