Evangeline tightly grips your hand, wherever Hestia teleported you to is dark. It looks like the burnt-out remains of a building to you. The ceiling and walls are collapsing in and rubble is strewn all over. Focusing again for a moment you are confident that there is no one around since the only life you sense is yours and Evangeline’s.

“I can’t see a thing and my gear didn’t have a light source,” Evangeline says as she tries to calm down, coming to the rustbelt has her on edge.

With your enhanced senses you can maneuver though the remains of this building just fine. Past one of the caving in walls you can see the faint flickering of fire, you are not totally alone here it seems.

“So what is the plan?” Evangeline asks, “It is dark and quiet here can’t we just put the portal here?”

“No it isn’t secure here, the building is falling apart and I see a fire outside,” you answer her.

She squints into the darkness but can’t see anything, she thinks you are just messing with her.

“It is pitch black how can you even see anything?”

“I ate the soul of a giant cat monster that was leading a group of wild saber tooth tiger beasts,” You explain to her, “afterwards I’ve been able to see in the dark.”

Your answer makes her a bit afraid and confused.

“How is that even possible?” She asks, “Doesn’t it feel wrong or evil to do that?”

“When strong enough things die they leave behind these orb things that contain their soul,” You tell her and with a tiny surge of mana you make a gentle white glow to illuminate the area. “I can just consume the orb to gain their power, it hasn’t seemed particularly evil to do it so far.”

“Eating souls sounds pretty evil though,” Evangeline says while thinking about trying it herself, “thanks for the light, at least now I won’t fall through one of these holes.”

She motions to a hole through the floor, it opens up to nothing but a fall to the pit.

Leaving the ruins of the building you see the area is filled with what looks like the remains of a bombed city. Ruins of destroyed buildings are numerous, but they have all long since been picked clear by scavengers.

“So the higher we go the better maintained the city gets,” Evangeline mentions, “from the looks of it we are at the bottom the floor could give out at anytime so we should be careful.”

“Any points of interest here in the lower areas that you know of?”

“I don’t know how far up it is but there is the casino, and,” she gets scared and angry thinking about the slavers again but just shakes her head, “closer to the top there should be slums though.”

This place isn’t very secure with the floors collapsing.

Near the fire in the distance smaller lights break away and start heading towards you.

“Something is coming our way,” you inform Evangeline and let the spell fade away.

“What is it?” She asks while getting mad about being blind again.

“To far away for me to see clearly but it looks like some people with flashlights.”

“So are we just going to hide from them?”

“No, we will intercept them, stay close.”

After Evangeline stumbles over debris and nearly falls into a hole you give up on guiding her though the wreckage and instead pick her up. She doesn’t protest when you life her into a princess carry, but her heart starts racing and her thoughts are not very mission oriented any longer. She tries repeating the thought ‘it is just to stay silent and to move faster’ over and over to calm down.

>45 vs highest dc 40

Not needing to wait for Evangeline to move through the darkness enables the pair of you to travel quickly towards the lights. Three men are clumsily staggering through the dark with only their flashlights to guide them. They don’t notice you at all when you stealthily approach.

“I’m telling you there aint nothing down here,” One of them says.

“If there aint nothing here what were those lights?”

“Coulda just been some sparks from something falling.”

“Sparks aint that big, besides why would the Don send us down here if there was nothing?”

“I dunno, one of you piss him off or something?”

The guys shake their heads no and continue slowly searching for your light.

With the distance you’ve traveled you can now see that the fire is coming from a few burning barrels around a dull metal tube. The tube looks to be in much better condition than the surrounding area, as if it is the only thing being properly maintained.

“Stay calm and just think your response,” You echo your thoughts to Evangeline, “There is a large tubular structure ahead; it vanishes into the floor above.”

She squeaks and nearly tumbles out of your arms to the ground. Her thoughts become a flurry of embarrassment and anger.

“You can’t read people’s minds like that!” she firmly thinks, “it sounds like an elevator up, you need an access card though.”

“We will try talking to these men then.”

“That is a bad idea, we don’t know what they are up to down here.”

You set Evangeline down anyways and make enough noise to act convincingly enough like you two are stumbling though the darkness.

“Anyone out there?” You call out to them to get their attention.

The men’s thoughts are racing with fear of their drinking being discovered. They back track towards you and illuminate you with their flashlights.

“Who’s this then?” One asks.

“Some lost love birds,” another says.

No one is supposed to be down here they think. Then they focus on Evangeline, just need to remove you from the picture and they’ll be able rape her until it’s time to report back to the don.

“It’s your lucky day then, we’s was just headed back up,” One of them says.

“That’s right we’ll even take the pair of ya back up no charge.”

“Unless you have money, we don’t mind payment,” another says when earns him a couple punches.

“If they tumbled down here, they aint got money ya moron.”

They plan on attacking you as soon as possible, their minds race with plans to kill you and dump the body.

“So you really know the way back up?” Evangeline tries to sound scared, which isn’t hard as she thinks these guys may be slavers.

“Of course dear, why don’t ya take lover boy and come along with use, we’ll get ya back up in no time at all.”

They want to lure you both back towards the elevator before trying to kill you.

Welcome to /tg/.

“Thank you guys are lifesavers,” You hold out the credit stick you found, “here you can have the money I was saving up, it isn’t much but-”

One of the men is too greedy to not take you up on the offer, he come forward and grabs at the credit stick.

Before he can even react you snap his neck and rush towards the other two.

Evangeline is shocked at your sudden action.

“Holy shit he just kill-” The man’s words are cut short when your fingers break his skull and tear his face off.

The last man is now terrified, he drops his flashlight and tries to run away. He is much slower than you though so when your hand clenches down on his shoulder he pisses himself in fear. You bind his arms and prepare to question him.

Evangeline comes up with the flashlights disgusted and confused.

“Was that really necessary?” She asks you.

“They were planning to attack me and rape you, so yes it was,” you respond, which makes her pale and calm down.

“The other two didn’t have elevator access,” she tells you while coming to terms with your actions. When she says this the man laughs with triumph in his mind, they don’t have card for the elevator.

“Ya won’t get away with this the Don will end ya!” the man cries out, but he is afraid that no one will ever know and that the Don will not care.

“Who is this Don?” You ask the man, he is completely confused.

“What the hell? Ya been living in the pit or something? Don Viennetta the boss of the rustbelt, ya made bad enemy today.”

That is the same name as the letter you found with the credit stick.

“Who is Joey?” You ask, the man thinks about dozens of men.

“The fuck ya mean who’s Joey,” the man says, “I aint know anyone named Joey.”

“The elevator, when is your pick up?” You ask your last question, the man is now thinking that this whole thing was a hit, someone is moving in on their turf.

“Too bad for ya we aint being picked up and we aint got access, we was suppose to stay down here,” He repeats the story in his mind dedicating himself to it.

For being nothing more than a disposable pawn in the bottom of this Don’s operation he has a surprising amount of loyalty.

You don’t have time to deal with this nonsense so you snap his neck and dump the corpses down a hole into the pit. It’s enough of a pain in the ass that none of them had access to the elevator.

“You could have let him live,” Evangeline comments while trying very hard not to think about anything.

“He was a loose end, the less people notice our operation the better.”

“Why did you talk to them at all then?”

“We gain some information, would you rather go in blind?”

She feels bad about them dying, but can’t find a way to argue with you over it.

You then go over to the elevator, the area with the burning barrels is strewn with empty bottles and broken glass. There is an access panel with a slot for a card next to the elevator door.

“So now what? We can’t do anything without access,” Evangeline says, she is worried you’ll sit here until someone comes down.

You look through your backpack to see if Hestia packed that red keycard for you.

>You find - A prototype firearm, two combat knives, six refilling flasks, an elegant case with a note saying to be careful with the contents, some mission gear, a pouch with gold coins, and the keycard.

“Wait how do you have red access?” Evangeline asks.

“Killed some guy with it,” Evangeline is torn between being impressed and angry at your response.

“Well that makes things a lot easier, you have access to all the lift systems then,” She explains, “If you want to get very high in the city we just need to get to one of the main elevators.”

The card slides into the slot and some lights turn green, then the card is returned to you.

“What is the difference?” You ask her.

“Most elevators only go a few floors, ten maybe twenty at the most. A main lift will take you at least a hundred in one go, much faster but also monitored.”

The door opens as the elevator arrives, “military override accepted,” A voice chimes out from inside.

Inside the elevator’s controls have been nearly completely destroyed, the only viable options have been helpfully relabeled to read casino one through five and the pit. You assume you are already at ‘the pit’ floor so your choices are a casino floor or trying to fix the panel to go someplace else.

"Where should we set up, you think?” You ask Evangeline, “You know things better than me. We need a secure area for the portal."

“Since you just killed those guys, the higher the better,” Evangeline says, “it may not be a good time to antagonize anyone at the casino.”

“The slums maybe? They don’t get patrolled so it could work for now. The higher you go the more regular patrols become,” She thinks about it some more but seems to decide on the slums.

“We’ll go to the uppermost floor of the casino then, we should be able to leave quickly enough if necessary,” You tell her.

The elevator travels surprisingly quickly and in no time at all the door opens onto the first floor of the casino.

The thoughts and sense of life is palpable. There are many thousands of people here, most of them angry about losing money. A band is playing an upbeat and catchy tune in the background and slot machines are reeling everywhere. With all the busy action your entry seems to have gone unnoticed for now.

>Awareness

You see that there are cameras everywhere, checking for anything going on in the casino. Several armed guards walk the floor mingling with the casino patrons. They don’t seem to have been alerted to you arriving via the elevator so you may have a chance to just leave.

“Ok then, act natural, just walk to the exit, we didn’t do anything,” Evangeline is thinking, trying to psyche herself up.

You’re too out of places you decide, you and Evangeline are dressed in rather drab clothing compared to the suits and dresses of the casino’s patrons. You guide Evangeline to the exit in a quick but not overly suspicious manner.

Outside you are clearly back into the rustbelt, aside from the casino there is no maintenance to the area at all. It shifts from Las Vegas to war zone in just a few feet and a single road stretches away from the casino. An excitable man runs up to you as you walk away from the casino doors.

“Hey there, you two don’t look like the normal clientele here. Say you wouldn’t happen to need a lift to the lift would you?” He asks you, his thoughts indicate he really wants to help. His taxi service isn’t doing too well right now. “Just fifty credits for the both of you, what do you say?”

Evangeline would very much prefer using the taxi service to walking you notice.

“You would know if this is a fair price,” your thoughts echo to Evangeline as some quick sleight of hand passes the credit stick to her, “pay the man if it isn’t unreasonable.”

“Very well, we shall accept your offer,” Evangeline says, “if your vehicle isn’t disgusting.”

“No, no its clean as a whistle,” The man is very happy that you’ve accepted and leads you to his cab, “I have to ask you to pay in advance though, I’ve been made a fool of too many times.”

“That will be acceptable,” Evangeline isn’t happy about it though.

“Good good, it isn’t safe these days what with the Don deciding to let the goblins spread all over the area,” the man says when you get into the cab.

“What goblins?” You ask him.

“Didn’t see ‘em on your way in? Lucky man,” he takes the payment from Evangeline, “or not so lucky if she’s already got your stick,” he jests, thinking about how damn lucky he is not to have a woman spending his money right now.

“Well you know how the tribes are all classified by color right?” He asks you while driving along towards the elevator, “the Don made a deal with the orange ones, they can have free reign down here so long as they don’t attack the casino, road, or elevator.”

(1/2)
>>
(2/2)

“How horrible,” Evangeline comments.

“Nearly been caught by them a few times myself, blockades just happen to fall across the road some times,” he thinks about once when he had to shake a pile of goblins off his car, “no worries today though, it is all clear.”

And true enough the road is clear for the rest of your trip to the elevator.

“We may have over spent a bit, any suggestions for a good place to stay on our way back up?” You ask the cab driver.

“I feel you there that’s what got me into driving,” he chuckles at his past misfortune, “I’d try four hundred or three seventy five, they both have decent enough places to stay. More slavers in the three hundreds, they don’t dare come into the four hundreds because of the Don.”

Evangeline gets upset at the mention of slavers.

“Here we are, the lift,” the man says as you pull up to another elevator, “thank again for helping me out, most people book rides in advance.”

As soon as you leave the cab he runs off to try and get more customers. He mentioned goblins, but you are on another mission right now you can always come back later.

You notice that this elevator only stops every twenty five floors, so you hit the button for four hundred. The casino is on floor four hundred fifty, perhaps you’ll visit again later.

“Alright move along,” some guy with a nightstick acting as security for the elevator directs you to leave, he really hates his job.

You are clearly in the slums now, rather than a burnout warzone you have buildings crammed and stacked together as tightly as possible. Shops, stalls and pedestrians crowd out any remaining space. People bustle about on the business, sorting through all the thoughts is a bit tricky but most people seem happy enough with their lives as is. You can’t a blimp of something thinking about an easy mark.

“We should find someplace to sleep if things take too long.”

As you continue talking you lose the pickpocket for a moment because a fight spills out of a bar and into the street.

You pull a single gold coin from your pouch and throw it at the pickpocket. It flawlessly zips through the crowd of moving people and hits the thief in the back of the knee causing them to become acquainted with the ground as they try to flee down an alleyway.

“Let’s go meet a thief,” you tell Evangeline who is confused.

“What do you mean a thief?” She asks as you guide her through the crowd.

“You got pickpocketed, lost your knife and the credit stick,” you tell her.

She checks her stuff in disbelief as you walk up to the thief, “I didn’t even notice, sorry.”

“Just be more careful in the future, with this many people around there is bound to be more thieves.”

Your thief is trying to stand up as you collect the coin you threw, their knee was nearly shattered by the force of the blow so they will not be walking any time soon.

“Alright, alright you got me, just take your stuff back, I don’t want any trouble,” the thief says, they have some sort of voice scrambler on, your credit stick and knife are dropped to the ground.

So she can walk.
It'll still hurt like hell.

Besides, informants are useful as fuck.
>>
>>42461525
So then the thief can tell someone we have magical healing powers.

Always assume the worst.

Pain is the least impactful form of discipline.

When she's limping around for a week she isn't going to be stealing very much, and she'll have plenty of time to think on what she's done.

Even though it's probably not a she, and the disguise is just that of a little girl to drop someone's guard.
>>
>>42461582
I definitely misread it, and thought we'd fully shattered her leg.

Still, though, it wouldn't be noticeable to partially heal it. Can be explained away by the pain fading off.
>>
>>42461694
There is no reason to.

So why?

We didn't pat Max on the back and try to make him feel better when we crushed his fucking soul with the letter.

Why should we do anything nice for someone who stole from us?
>>
>>42461747
The first part was acknowledging there's no need too.

The second part was saying that we should be able to use the healing skill in public without it being noticed.
>>
>>42461779
But there is no point to it, so why do it at all?

Why are you dead-set on healing this person's leg?

>"they'll tell us something useful"

Yeah, they'll do that if we throw them a bone and give them some money then ask.

Instead you're going to subtly heal them, hopefully so they won't even notice, THEN ask them for something?

If you ask and say you'll make them feel better, red flags for them.

If you just heal them then ask, they'll think "fuck this dude, fucked up my leg"

It's pointless.

You pick up the stolen goods and pass the knife back to Evangeline. The thief’s face starts to flicker, and she gets very worried.

“You got your stuff back, leave me alone then,” she tries to get you to leave.

“I need to know some things, I’m willing to pay for the information.”

“You have got to be kidding me, does he really just pick up every woman he sees,” Evangeline thinks.

“Look, uh, this isn’t a good time, how about I find you later and we can deal then,” the thief says, starting to panic as her disguise flickers even faster.

“You can’t walk and your disguise is about to fail, I could heal you if you help us,” you tell her.

She is very conflicted; if her leg worked she could escape she thinks. She really doesn’t want her disguise to drop but sees no other way out of this.

“Fine heal me then we talk,” the thief decides.

“You’ll try to run as soon as you are healed, we can talk first,” you tell her which sets her back into panic, “we need someplace off the radar, big enough to store vehicles.”

The disguise blinks out completely, revealing a terrified set of pink eyes. The thief looks much younger than the disguise and her hair matches her eyes. Her thoughts are racing about -them- coming for her.

“Full confidentiality no one needs to know you helped us, and we didn’t see your real face,” you try to ease her fear, which puts a twinge of hope and confusion into her.

“Full confidentiality?” She asks, “what about the reward?”

“What about it?” Evangeline asks.

The thief relaxes at this question, she is happy you don’t know about the bounty.

You must not be from around here,” she grins at the two of you, “Name’s Aurora, so you two just need a big safe house?”

“That is the idea,” Evangeline says.

“That sort of thing isn’t cheap, you’re looking at fifty thousand for no questions asked,” Aurora the thief tells you, “More if you go higher, but I can work out a deal with you.”

She holds up one hand, “Five thousand a month and I’ll let you use my place as a favor for not turning me in. The blues get a bit close from time to time, but they can’t get in.”

Evangeline seems doubtful, like this is a trap.

The thief however is being completely honest, she really doesn’t want to be turned in.

“Do you know anyone named Richie?” You ask Aurora the thief.

“Uh, no offence but even if I did I don’t snitch,” She says adamantly, she don’t even think about it slightly.

“Tell me about the blues,” you ask next.

“Ha, you live in the pit or something?” she laughs, “Blue goblin tribe, they are at war with the orange below and the white above. Been like that forever as far as I know.”

“Any recent rumors, I’d be interested in anything about the pit, the directors movements, or the research division.”

Aurora goes pale when you mention the researchers. She doesn’t want to talk about –them-.

“Nothing about those last two, but I heard some soldiers messed up an operation in the pit,” Aurora tells you and Evangeline shifts uncomfortably, “no one seems to care though.”

“So we have a deal or not?” Aurora asks you, ready to try and run at any moment.

“Sure, we have a deal,” you tell her as you extend your healing aura to envelope her healing her leg near instantly, “and now you can walk so lead the way.”

“Give me your disguise,” You tell Aurora.

“What?” She is confused.

“I’ll fix it, just let me see what the problem is.”

“Alright, but unless you have tools or something I don’t see how you can work on it,” She passes a necklace over to you, a small mechanical pendant seems to be the device in question.

Evangeline also wonders how you expect to fix it without any tools at all.

But you have a plan, willing tools into existence may not be a good idea, so you try to control the air around you to unscrew the device.

>67 vs dc 60 to improve the device

The screws spin as though forced to by some unseen power, and you manage to pry the little pendant open. The insides are a jumbled mess, the results of poor repairs. While memorizing the design you strip it down bare and rebuild it back up. You are confident that you can replicate a similar device in the future, it seems to be a purely technological version of the illusion projects you found in the research rings.

You manage to fix the device, solve the issues introduced by the shoddy repairs from before and a clever rewiring job will have the device working better than before and for longer.

After reassembling the device you give it back to Aurora. She puts the necklace back on and turns the disguise on.

“Woah! You fixed it better than I could, I think I could even load some new faces into it now,” Aurora is happy with the results.

“You some sort of psychic?” She asks next, “that looked like telekinesis with the screws.”

“Please don’t give him any ideas, he will figure out how to do that next,” Evangeline says feigning disapproval and walking away.

“You can’t do that right?” Aurora asks you before chasing Evangeline and calling after her, “That isn’t possible right?”

You walk through the city and Aurora chatters constantly, she really doesn’t interact with people often due to the bounty on her head. The slums continue away from the elevator for a few miles so just when Evangeline starts getting sick of walking Aurora vanishes and returns moments later inside an obviously stolen car.

“Well come on then, cars are pretty noticeable, so we’ll have to go fast,” She announces.

Her driving is jerky and inexperienced but it is fast. An hour or so later of driving through empty rusty supports for the city’s super structure you come to an abandoned outpost like the one in the pit. Aurora pulls the car up to a doorway punches in a code and drives through the now opening door.

“Well here you are, not bad for five thousand huh?” She is very proud of the fact she was able to get into the abandoned outpost.

“This looks military?” You ask.

“There are many abandoned outposts like this, new ones are made when they need to be used,” Evangeline tells you.

“Yup, and I think this one has a teleport jammer cause that is what the door I can’t open says,” Aurora tells you.

“Teleport jammer?” You ask, “I’m interested in acquiring one, why can’t you open the door?”

“Its painted all black and there doesn’t seem to be anyway to pry the card slot open,” Aurora shrugs, “if you can open it, you can have it. If you tell me what you need something like that for.”

Black, that is a problem, no doubt it refers to needing black level access.

“I think we can get the door open no problem once we have contact with our expert,” you tell Aurora.

“You have a door expert?” Aurora asks, “this I gotta see.”

“We need to ensure the outpost is secure first, will that be a problem?” You ask her.

“As long as you don’t take anything that doesn’t belong to you, then sure you’re paying to use the place,” Aurora says, “and speaking of payment, five thousand credits.”

“I’ll look the place over, you can pay her and start the prep work,” you tell Evangeline, tossing the credit stick to her.

“Alright,” Evangeline agrees.

A full sweep of the outpost later you find that the main door is the only door, could be bad news if you come under siege. There is plenty of unused space, Aurora has packed all her stuff into one corner of the bunk room. Then you find the teleport jammer, equipment is scattered about from failed attempts to hack the door open, you try your red card on it anyways. You just get a red denied light flashed back at you, it must really be black access.

The base is secure enough for now, Hestia will likely make her own improvements.

When you get back to the hanger you find Aurora chatting with a red faced Evangeline, from their thoughts the topic was you.

“What are you talking about?” You ask them anyways.

“Nothing, at all,” Aurora says and it sounds extra disingenuous with the false face and voice scrambler on, “so what are you doing here exactly? This tech you have here doesn’t look standard issue.”

Just how much are you going to trust your new thief contact / landlord?

“Why do you still have your disguise on?” You ask Aurora.

“Sorry I just wear it all the time,” She says while worrying about the bounty, “I guess it’s fair to not wear it if you let me stay and see your secret.”

“Well then it looks like you have new faces to install,” you tell her, “I’m not sure we can fully involve you with all of this.”

“Fair enough, we all have secrets,” Aurora says, but is disappointed, she was really hoping you would let her in on your plans. “Just call me over if your ‘expert’ can get the jammer door open.”

Aurora wanders off to her little area so you work with Evangeline to finish constructing the portal and placing the scanning probes into place for Hestia to do the rest of the work. You use the few spare probes to create a link with your laptop and try to contact Hestia.

You receive a simple ping back as a reply. Then a few moments later the probes begin to glow with mana.

It takes longer than normal to build the charge.

Eventually the enchantment is complete and drones file into the room and construct something.

“Signal boosted to within acceptable levels,” Hestia’s avatar appears on your laptop, “Scans of the location complete, an abandoned military base with teleport shielding. A good choice, are you able to acquire the jammer for further study?”

“It is locked behind a black access door, I figured you could take control of the base’s systems and open it,” you tell her.

“I will look into it then,” Hestia tells you.

“Phew, mission over? It was short but I’d rather go back and try to get some more spells than stay up here,” Evangeline says, she is eager to leave.

“You will need to come back to maintain cover if you leave,” You tell her.

“I know, I just don’t like it here.”

“Hestia what will you need to get the door opened?” You ask.

“I am accessing the base’s systems now, the door is not linked with the main system,” Hestia states, “You can try to open the paneling to override the system and open the door, or with time I will crack the security.”

“We should hide the portal first,” you mention.

“Scans are complete, I will construct a façade and disguise the portal as the wall behind it, the loss of space will be unnoticeable by most,” Hestia tells you as the drones set to work, “You should focus on other tasks.”

“Trying to open the door will not hinder your efforts to break in should I fail, will it?”

“Unlikely, good luck in trying.”

You make you way to the black level access door and try to access the keycard panel, you successfully manage to pry the cover off. Working with the mess of wiring you trigger what you think is the pathway to open the door.

>72 vs middle dc 60

The access lights flash green and the door starts to slide open with a rumble.

“Security breech detected, sealing access door,” A warning is announced once and the door starts to seal shut again.

As fast as you can you try to stop the door from sealing in the process you fry the panel. The door has a gap only a few inches wide, but you can see it is fully open to the other side. A drone floats up to you shortly after.

“You triggered a security lockdown I see,” Hestia says through the drone, ”I will be able to slide a portal to the other side through the gap and gain access to the room, so over all you have succeeded, well done.”

“Anonymous is cool, like I said before I can keep my mouth shut,” Aurora says, she is getting pumped to meet another person who doesn’t care about her bounty.

“You know that breaking open that black door is going to give you a pretty high bounty?” She says while you walk, “I mean, if they ever notice. This place has been abandoned for a while.”

“Speaking of bounties, just how bad is yours?”

“Really, really bad,” Aurora tells you, she is very nervous about this topic and scared of the researchers, “you have secrets and so do I.”

You get your laptop and open it, check to see if Hestia is there and to your surprise there is a feed of her body displayed.

“Woah your expert is a chick!” Aurora says while sliding up next to you to see the screen, she then waves, “hi mystery lady, I hear you are a expert at opening doors.”

“You should consider your interactions with this on carefully,” Hestia says while her body lip syncs, “with the signal boosted I have been able to retrieve the following information.”

The screen switches to a display of a wanted poster, and a very long scrolling list of offences, all of it is related to theft. They are offering up to a forty trillion credit reward for Aurora’s capture. She is reputed to be the number one most wanted criminal from floors four hundred fifty to two hundred. Aurora’s mood sinks instantly, she is already planning ways to escape.

“ha ha ha, only forty trillion what a rip off right?” She starts slowly edging away from you.

Some thing seems a bit off here, her reported crimes don’t add up to such a drastic bounty.

Most of the actual researchers aren't bad people, The higher ups like steve are the people she'd really be afraid of.
>>
>>42465681
Exactly.
It's easier to count the people who do like us than the people who don't.

She'd love us!

Let's tell her we killed Steve!

We won't be able to kill her, we'll have to deal with her in unorthodox tactics.

It's like you don't even spy, bruv.

I dunno, I think she might have let us survive and dropped us down the pit on purpose. It sounds like she doesn't like the way the afterlife is run currently.

“Is this facility secure enough for our needs?” You ask Hestia.

“Yes, this is the only possible flaw in your choice of locations,” She replies.

“Then who cares?” You say, which makes Aurora freeze in shock.

“Very well, I will adjust our plans accordingly,” Hestia informs you, “you have secured the main objective, just be careful that future actions do not compromise security here, I suggest locating a secondary base within the slums.”

“You really don’t care?” Aurora asks you, she is on the verge of tears, but she doesn’t seem sad.

“It doesn’t affect my plans, so no I do not care about your bounty,” you tell her, “I am interested in why the researchers are after you though.”

“That is a secret,” She says trying to not cry, “I can’t tell anyone, when I did before they came for me.”

“Well I doubt that they will be after you anytime soon.”

“Why not?”

“Their facilities were just destroyed.”

She is surprised, happy and confused when you tell her this.

“Wait, are you implying that you did that?” Aurora asks you.

“I’m going to retrieve the jammer now, why don’t you rest for a bit, clear your mind,” You brush off the question for now.

She just nods, thinking about if you really don’t care about the bounty. What are you hiding that forty trillion credits doesn’t even make you stop and think about it for a second.

When you leave her she starts crying.

Back at the black door Hestia has already completed the procedure, to create a portal into the room.

“Would you like to go in yourself, or shall I just retrieve the device for study?” Hestia asks you.

it's sad, but hay we have scavenging to max, so we still get some cool stuff
>>
>>42466369
Plus we know the teleporter jammer is in there, so we might find several jammers, to secure other places or to tinker with.
>>
“If I go in myself perhaps I will find something more,” You tell Hestia, “but I notice that Evangeline is gone, did she return through the portal.”

“You only mentioned that she should remain for cover purposes, so yes she entered the portal,” Hestia responds.

“That’s fine for now then I suppose. There appears to be three goblin tribes up here, would you acquire any information you can on them.”

“There are only a few connections I can access remotely, but I will attempt to learn what I can.”

A pair of drones prop a portal up on the wall for you to use.

Inside the room a few drones bustle about scanning everything, you assist their search and find –

>A metal square, six teleport jammers, research papers labeled superluminal computation , a black keycard, and a dusty sealed envelope.

“As usual your ability to break physical reality is concerning,” Hestia comments when you finish, “I will prepare one of the jammer units to continue functioning in this location.”

You are so focused on your looting with Hestia that you didn’t even sense that Aurora has moved away from the hanger and is headed towards this room.

You exit through the portal in time to maintain your cover.

“Where did Evangeline go? I checked everywhere she isn’t here,” Aurora asks you, she is very suspicious of Evangeline’s disappearance.

Any magic items amongst that? Can hestia identify if the square is weird, the contents of the envelope, if the keycard is legit, and what the hell is superliminal computation?

also what are we researching atm

New reseach
Communication upgrades over long distances.
Better teleportation technology
Motivation systems (We need to motivate our populace to do things and work, either reseach, or self improvement via training.)

Maybe create schedules hestia can enforce for people to work or train a number of hours everyday if they want to live in our city.

Sitting around doing nothing all day but drinking is being a waste of space.

No magic items, but you can identify the cube and envelope contents

The cube: Reality stabilization matrix
Envelope: Tachyon particle physics research notes

For more information the objects need to be studied in depth.

Current research is:

Spatial folding
Multi-phasic shielding
Force-Energy structures
Holograms
Defensive and enhancing symbiotes
Statistic implant improvements

The motivation program reminds me.
Maybe we could use some desire enchanted items for motivation, but using some research on the cancelation spell, we might be able to create desire enchanted items that have its enchantment decay over time. Thus would have them work for the items, but they would eventually be no longer be satisfied by having them, and could return the unenchanted item to Hestia for a small reward.

The twins and Marissa were not supposed to be very important so no. It is seems to be hard to find something I think will fit now. Perhaps a draw friend will come along and help with that some day.
