You are Dean Walters. A week ago, you were a completely ordinary loser. Now, you’re a superhero. Apparently.

Frankly, sometimes you expect to wake up and realize it was all a dream, but that usually doesn’t stick for very long. And, hey, life could be a lot worse. As a hero, you’ve got a pretty comfy life, comparatively. That’s probably because you haven’t really started your heroic career. The days since you’ve picked up your hammer, which you now know is called Mjolnir, have been hectic. Since meeting with Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Reed Richards, three of the biggest names in superheroing, you’ve been whisked off to some military base in Virginia, where you’ve spent most of your time training.

You say training, but you’ve mostly been spending the week getting your ass kicked by Captain America.

The novelty wore off quickly.

Still, you feel like you’ve been learning, albeit slowly. You feel like you’ll be more prepared to face actual combat, although you still aren’t able to do a lot of the things Thor was able to do with Mjolnir. You’ve been watching videos of Thor’s combat maneuvers, but watching him do it, and actually being able to replicate it, are two very different things. Still, you’re making progress. You’re able to shoot lightning now, and you can almost fly!

Today, you’ve been called in to meet Tony and a few other new heroes in training, apparently about some proposal the man’s prepared. You get dressed and prepared to face the day. You still don’t have an actual costume, or armor, or anything, but every day you feel more and more like an actual hero.

You realize you have a few hours to kill before you need to be at this meeting.

Question why they decided a girl who's only power is to generate clouds to fly on should be trained in how to use a sniper rifle.

Question why they use deadly lasers in their training regime.

Question why supers are held without due process.

Question the use of mind control nanobots in the Thunderbolts program.

Question why SHIELD, a supposed world wide organization is only ever concerned with policing America.

You decide the best course of action is to explore the base more. Pretty much the entirety of what you’ve seen has been the room assigned to you as your room, the training field, and the hallway between the two. Sure, you might not strictly be allowed to wander around the base freely, but who’s gonna stop you? You’re a superhero now! And it’s not like exploring’s gonna hurt anything.

So, you decide to head out. To your surprise, security seems to be lax enough for you to wander with seemingly no issue. Soon enough, the hallway you were following splits off in three directions. To keep you from being totally lost, there are signs, which you’re suddenly very grateful of, seeing as the entirety of this base seems to be made of grey, winding corridors. To your left are the server rooms, ahead of you, Stark’s office, and to your right, more dorms.

You turn to your right. It seems to be the safest option, and hey, you might even meet another hero in training. You haven’t met any since you got here. For some reason, they seem intent on keeping all of you separate, or something. Knowing a few of the people in the meeting would certainly not be a bad thing. You enter another, long, gray hallway, although this one has doors occupying the walls.

You begin to walk down the hallway, only to be startled by someone tapping your shoulder. You spin around quickly, stepping back a few paces as you do so. The person who, presumably tapped you on the shoulder looks at you curiously. It’s a woman, with long blonde hair that’s tied back. She seems to be at roughly the same age as you, if perhaps a bit older, and she’s dressed in a conservative suit. You swear, she seems familiar in some way, but you can’t exactly place her face.

“Excuse me, I don’t think you’re supposed to be here,” she says, and although her voice is casual, you can tell she’s just as unsure of your identity as she is of yours.

You hold out your hand for her to shake, and smile at her. “No, I guess I’m not supposed to be here. But, that makes it fun, right? I’m Dean, uh... I guess I’m the new Thor?” You pause, trying to check her reactions. The woman has a very good poker face, at least, since you can’t get any sort of read off of her. If she turned out to be a robot, you wouldn’t be surprised. “And you are?”

She shakes your hand gingerly, raising one eyebrow. “Carol Danvers. Ms. Marvel.” You nod and try to act like you really know who that is. Sure, you’ve heard the name before, but... Ms. Marvel isn’t exactly one of the major superheroes, and you weren’t really a superhero guy to begin with.

“Uh, so... you’re like, a real superhero right? Not in training? In that case, why are you here?” You try to make casual conversation, and look as casual as possible. She seems slightly bemused by this, and crosses her arms over her chest.

“I’m here for Stark’s meeting, which, unless I’m mistaken, you should be going to as well.”

She’s here for Stark’s meeting? It must be something major then. You weren’t expecting any major superheroes to show up.

You nod, “Yeah, I’m going too, but uh, you’re early. We have a couple hours before it starts.” Suddenly, you get an idea. You’re sick and tired of getting your ass kicked by Captain America. So, now you can get your ass kicked by someone else! Someone who’s even more attractive!

“Oh, uh... we could train for a little bit. I’m still learning, but it could be fun, right?” Carol seems to take it into consideration. “Sure, why not? I’ve got a few hours to kill and some aggression to work off. Lead me to where you do your training.”

You show her the way, and luckily enough, you manage to make it to the training grounds pretty quickly. It’s not exactly high tech, a dirt field that occasionally has stands of bad guys set up for target practice, really. But, it works well enough. You watch as Carol pulls over her suit to reveal her costume which is certainly something. You kinda wish you had a costume to change into, but Stark still hasn’t gotten you that armor he promised you. Instead, you’re in jeans and a t-shirt, holding a mystical hammer.

You and Carol stand in opposite sides of the field, and then... the fight begins!

You decide to play it defensively, at least until you know how she fights. Honestly, you don’t even know her powers, so taking the time to see what she can do seems to be the best idea. You watch her movements carefully, as she seems to be doing the same of you. After a few moments though, she gets impatient. She flies towards you. Fast. Like, faster than Doom, fast. You try to dodge out of the way, but you only succeed in making sure her fist doesn’t turn your face inside out. You’re pretty sure she hit your shoulder pretty bad. Under different circumstances, you’d be hurt far worse, but Mjolnir was doing it’s job pretty well. You struggle back to your feet, and hurry to put some distance between the two of you. Okay, so she can fly, and she’s strong. You can deal with that.

You get into a stance, and hold Mjolnir at the ready. You doubt she’s only got close attacks, so you’re ready to dodge if need be, but you’re ready if she tries to fly at you again. You’re in luck, actually, because she does try it again. You’re about to crack a joke, when you remember. You fucking suck at baseball. You swing way too early, and your grip on the hammer slips. Mjolnir is flung across the field, and you haven’t exactly gotten good enough to make it come back to you.

Next thing you know, Carol Danvers has tackled you to the ground. You hold up your hands, “I give, I give!”

She lets you up and gives you a smirk. “You did pretty good, for a newbie.”

You give an exaggerated sigh as you get up. “I think I broke something,” you wait a moment before finishing. “Yup, it was my pride.”

Carol laughs, and you can’t help but join her, despite the fact that she totally just kicked your ass. You give her a grin, “You’re really good. How long have you been doing this?”

Carol shrugs, “Oh... a few years now. It does get easier, especially when you have people to help you. I was lucky enough to have people who were there to support me when I was having trouble with it.” She goes to gather up her clothes and get dressed again, and you check your watch. It seems like the meeting will be starting soon. You let Carol know, and the two of you head to where the meeting is taking place.

By the time you get there, you’re a bit late, and the room is packed. There’s a table and chairs, but all the chairs have already been taken. There are superheroes from all over in this room, some you recognize, some you don’t. You filter into the room, and stand near the back.

Tony, seeing the last of his guests arrive, clears his throat. He’s standing at the front of the room, Captain America, and... some guy in a suit you don’t recognize standing behind him. The guy in the suit is on his phone, which strikes you as a little odd.

“Good afternoon everyone. I know a lot of you guys must be confused as to why I brought you out here, but believe me, this is gonna be well worth your time. I’ve been trying out a new idea I’ve been kicking around, and I gotta say, it’s working better than I expected. The idea is simple, and frankly, isn’t all that new. But the execution is where it shines. I propose an initiative, which takes young, upcoming superheroes, and--”

Tony’s interrupted by the guy in the suit whispering something into his ear, and he looks well and truly shocked.

Tony clears his throat before speaking again. “Um... there’s... something happening. In Connecticut,” he pauses, and looks around the room. “It’s big.”

Tony pulls a remote control out of his pocket, and turns on the television behind him. The television is on some sort of news channel, everyone watches in silence, as a town is completely destroyed. A caption on the screen lets you know it’s Stamford, Connecticut, although you’ve never heard of it before. A newscaster appears on the screen.

“The estimated casualties number in the six hundreds. A good third of which were children. We don’t know much yet, but based on footage that was broadcasting live from a superhero team known as the ‘New Warriors’, it appears to be related to masked heroes and villains. The New Warriors were apparently a team of so called ‘heroes’ that were broadcasting their adventures live. Their latest stunt was apparently meant to increase ratings in anyway possible. Due to some mixture of carelessness, greed, or just plain stupidity, these ‘heroes’ have cost the lives of hundreds.”

A quiet murmur goes through the crowd, and Captain America speaks up first. “We need to go and see what we can do to help for now. This is serious.”

No one disagrees.

People begin piling into whatever vehicles they can, those that can fly, do so. Tony’s important meeting seems much less so now.

You catch up with Carol on the way out, and suggest you go together. She gives you a weak smile, but agrees. She picks you up, and the two of you begin the flight over. You consider making conversation on the flight over, but decide against it. Beyond the horrible timing, it can’t exactly be easy to talk while flying at super high speeds. By the time you arrive at Stamford, a lot of the other heroes are already there, and are doing there best. Captain America and Iron Man seem to be helping direct the others, a few heroes are doing their best to save civilians, while others are moving rubble out of the way. There are heroes from all over helping here, and not just costumed heroes, but firefighters, cops, everyone.

You start to clear rubble out of the way, moving it so that you might be able to help. You feel almost useless. You never signed on to be moving rubble, you signed on to help people, and although you can make the conscious connection between moving rocks and helping people, it’s still frustrating. It’s hard to feel anything other than depressed though. The atmosphere is so thick, it’s practically choking. The hammer does it’s job though. You feel stronger than you’ve ever felt before, you just wish it was in a different circumstance.

Eventually, you and all the other heroes have done everything you can. The rubble’s cleared, a few people even managed to save some civilians. But the estimated death total is still 600, and people aren’t happy with you. Even though all of you tried your best to clean it up, no real heroes were there to stop it. Carol flies you back to the base. She seems hit by it as much as you, if not more so.

You say goodbye to Carol, and you head into Tony’s office. You’re tired, and you’re not exactly thinking straight, which is probably why you didn’t knock, and just barged in. Tony’s sitting at his desk, looking troubled. He looks up as you enters, and nods. “Hey,” he says, his voice quiet, and lacking his usual bravado. He gestures for you to have a seat, and you do so, hesitantly.

“What happened today shouldn’t have happened. Ever. We have how many teams of superheroes? And none of them were able to save any of the people. 619. That’s how many people we failed today.” He rests his head in his hands. “Frankly, we fucked up.”

You nod, “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about,” you reply, “I want to take the people who did this to justice. The New Warriors.”

Tony, shakes his head. “The New Warriors, I mean, the ones who aren’t dead, have been captured already. But... they were part of it, but there was someone else. Steve and I noticed it when we were cleaning up. There was someone there, someone that caused the explosion. He was a minor villain, he’s never really posed a threat like this before, but... well. I guess we didn’t pay enough attention to him. He’s called Nitro. He must’ve been who they were trying to stop. And we have no idea where he’s gone. We’ve got people looking for him, but... ”

He turns to you, and sighs. “You should really get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a very important day.”

You return to your room, and get some sleep. Your rest is plagued by nightmares of Stamford.
