Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you explored an ancient tomb, fought a party of bandits, and experimented with another man.

It is currently the 17th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You first become aware of something sharp digging in to your armpit, and second of the fact you seem to have been encased in some sort of leathery prison, most likely Zahak's wing. It's very dark and were it not for your Warlock Armor you get the sense that it would be unbearably hot. Recalling the last time you took that meditative aid you bought from Ghada, the moment you took your helmet off you started vomiting blood. Your armor is probably the only thing keeping you going right now.

When you try to shift your weight away from the bony spike digging into your side your head swims, your stomach churns, and pain flares through your limbs. With blood pounding in your ears you haul yourself forward, away from the wall of scales and spines that is Zahak's flank. For a moment you think you're about to pass out again, but then as if removing a blindfold Zahak lifts his wing, his long neck craning around to nuzzle into your chest.

Even that gentle pressure is almost enough to knock you backwards, but with surprising care Zahak takes your forearm in his jaws and pulls you forcefully to your feet, your armor preventing his teeth from scoring jagged cuts in your flesh. {When I got here you were sleeping, and there was another man and he was sleeping but he was standing in a weird position. I had to keep you safe because there was a pack of weird wingless dragons wandering around to the south and I didn't want them to find you, because they'd probably try to hurt you.}

You wrap an arm around one of Zahak's horns, scratching at the base by way of response. The pain burning through your skull prevents a more detailed response. Taking a moment to inspect your surroundings, you find that Zahak hasn't moved you far. You're still in the shallow cave formed by the waterfalls which feed into this canyon system you've found yourself in. The standing stones still hover all around you, their surfaces increasingly glowing in blue geometric patterns as the sun dips towards the horizon.

Having taken a few minutes to collect yourself, you reach out to Zahak using the strange telepathic connection the two of you share. The connection seems tenuous, as though an errant breeze might break your concentration and cut off the line of communication, but it's good enough for you to pose a question. {What happened to the other man? The one who was sleeping on his feet?}

Zahak shifts his weight towards you and lifts his other wing, revealing the prone form of the bandit you captured. He's slumped over unnaturally, his ass in the air and his face pressed against the stone floor. One of his hands is extended as if to grasp some nonexistent object, his arms bent oddly and back strained in the midst of exertion. It's a pose frozen in time and removed from its original context, the result of a paralysis spell.

The poor bastard is sweating like a field slave at midday, but otherwise he seems fine. You get the sense that he's unconscious and he's probably going to stay that way for a while. You did shred his soul after all, if you woke him up now he probably wouldn't even remember his own name, let alone who you are or why he's here.

>Put a dagger through the bandit's throat, then mount up on Zahak and go in search of the camp he told you about.
>You should definitely seek out the bandit camp, but this poor bastard's harmless. No need to kill him.

Quick announcement regarding the magic system:
I'm going to be making some changes to the way permanency works. I'm going to be introducing a new system of magic called, unimaginatively, "Ritual Magic". It's already been introduced in a way, the divination that Ghada did was a ritual and it's been mentioned that the elves maintain their immortality through rituals passed down to them by dragons.

Rituals will require a set amount of time to prepare at which point they can be activated at any point later on for 1 vys assuming nobody tampers with the preparation. Things like divining distant places, or seeing a glimpse of a possible future, or constructing a barrier to protect an area from spirits, or communing with spirits too weak to insert their thoughts into your head, are all going to be rituals. However, I'm still working out a few kinks and debating a few points of doctrine internally. I hope to hammer out all the details by Monday.

You reach up and tightly grip your brooch, concentrating on the connections between you and your companions. It takes more effort than usual, but projecting your thoughts across the pathways created by the brooch actually proves quite easy. {Where are you all? I got a little side tracked exploring this old ruin, fighting bandits, that sort of thing.}

Your headache seems to be redoubling its efforts to cripple you, the faint wisp of thought you get from Darzi as she responds black spots swirling through your vision and pain blossoming from the base of your skull. {We're resting at a fork in the road. There's an inn here, The Shah's Rest, and since the sun is starting to set we thought it would be better to end the day with a hot meal and mulled wine rather than hard biscuits and water.}

You can't really say you can blame them. Liquor and good food sound like exactly what you need right now. {I'll be with you shortly.} Is all you can bear to say before severing the connection.

You try to haul yourself up into the saddle on Zahak's back, but you end up needing some help from Zahak himself. He lets you use his wing as a footstool of sorts, lifting you up enough that you can crawl into the layers of cloth, leather, and wood. You're a little hesitant about soaring through the air on dragonback when you can barely stand, but you don't see any alternative. Gripping the post at the front of the saddle so tightly your knuckles turn white, you urge Zahak onto his feet.

You feel your stomach roil as soon as Zahak starts moving, but you don't vomit. You think that urge might be somehow suppressed by your armor, though you can't imagine how such an enchantment might work. He makes his way swiftly out of the shelter of the cave, then finds a stretch of mostly straight canyon where he can launch himself skyward and spread his wings without fearing that he'll clip the canyon walls.

(1/2)
>>
Your stomach settles once you're in the air. Zahak makes sure that his turns are gradual and that he doesn't make any sudden changes in altitude, making the flight back to the road surprisingly smooth. Unfortunately your companions are at least four or five hours ahead of you, and though Zahak can fly far faster than any carriage can rumble along these ancient roads, poorly maintained as they are, it's still going to take hours to catch up.

Zahak tries to talk to you but you're so out of it you can't really respond. You're just focusing on not falling to your death. By the time you spot the inn in the distance the sun has sunk below the horizon and the night sky is filled with stars, Pani's river carving from one end to the other like some sort of vast wound.

The inn itself is a squat, two story construction of brick and plaster with a flat roof and a stable built adjacent. You spy your carriage parked out front, and can only assume that your camels are being fed and watered somewhere out of sight. You probably don't want to just land out front on the back of a dragon, but nor do you feel like walking very far in your condition would be wise.

>Have Zahak land near the road so you can climb off, then find a secluded place to sleep the night.
>Tell Zahak to let you off then scout ahead, towards the city of Nazir, and report back to you in the morning.

As you sail towards the inn you spot a dune spilling over the short stone fence which flanks the road on either side. They're intended to help keep back the desert sands, but at best they delay the inevitable. You direct Zahak to land behind the dune, but he's still hasn't quite gotten the hang of landing safely yet. He ends up crashing into the sand and sending you flying from the saddle. You land in a heap at the bottom of the dune, which Zahak is now partially buried in.

Your entire body feels like its on fire, your legs especially so, but you pull yourself to your feet by using the fence as leverage. It's only thanks to Pani's infinite grace that nobody spots the giant winged lizard struggling to free itself from the sands. That and cover of darkness.

Only once your adoptive son has finally shaken himself free do you wearily force your thoughts to mingle with his own. {Could you scout ahead? There should be a city to the southwest, near a river. I want you to look for any signs of bandits or raiding parties, then report back to me in the morning. I don't think it should take you more than a few hours, and I'd like to be able to avoid as much trouble as possible.}

Zahak bobs his head up and down once, the gesture seems strange coming from a creature with such a long neck and massive head. {I can do that! I'm not even tired, I've been up for the last two days straight hunting and exploring. I even caught a fish yesterday! I swooped down and snatched it up. It was really big, and had sharp teeth, but it tasted really good!}

A giant fish with sharp teeth... the only creature that comes to mind is a shark. You've never seen one personally, you're not even sure if they exist in the waters near Pidjata, but you've read about them. Apparently they're common on the northern coast and on the western coast of the Rhynian mainland. Just how far is Zahak roaming from your estate?

You can't muster up the energy to lecture him about straying too far from home right now, but you'll need to remind yourself tomorrow. Tensing his legs, Zahak propels himself upwards and snaps out his wings, a rush of air nearly knocking you off your feet as he struggles to gain altitude. Only once Zahak's profile has grown so indistinct that you can barely pick out the pale sliver in the night sky do you turn and start the long trek towards the inn.

Even using the stone fence as a support, walking is difficult. You have to frequently stop to catch your breath or wait for a cramp to abate. What should have been maybe a ten minute walk at most ends up taking nearly an hour. When finally you reach the inn you're practically delirious, the sounds of music and revelry reaching you only in brief snatches of distorted noise. Stumbling through the doors you're greeted with looks of confusion, and then fear.

In your armor and cloak, you probably cut a pretty intimidating figure. A faceless soldier wreathed in a cloak as black as the void itself, the dozens of golden beads dangling from your limbs each marking an enemy defeated. Of course, the beads don't really mark the deaths of your enemies, but the enemies of this suit of armor's previous owner. Not that anyone but you and your companions would know that.

You think you hear someone shouting your name, but that might just be your imagination. Then your vision clears for an instant and you see a man in front of you with a naked blade held confidently at his side. He's dressed in long robes, with all manner of pouches, daggers, and decorations dangling around his waist. In your admittedly fevered, barely lucid state he looks enraged, the blade poised to run you through.

It's ok Soma, I forgive you.

If it's any consolation, the only thing I though of when you wrote that is,

1. We're going to castrate our brother if we ever see him again.
2. Vasuda is going to need alot of consoling.
3. We're going to murder everyone involved in this.

Other than that, I though your writing was good (other than Mik coming off as much more of a uncaring asshole than usual, and the dark subject matter, I found it totally believable that our brother went off the deep end and did this to his wife.)

As your vision begins to fade again you channel Metal magic. All at once your vision clears and the weariness in your limbs fades. You realize that the man's talking to you, though you missed the beginning of his question. “-look so good. Why don't you sit down?”

You shake your head. “No, no. I'm fine. It's just the weariness of the road. If you'll excuse me, I think there should be some people here waiting for me.”

The man reluctantly slides his sword back into its scabbard, though he keeps his hand on the hilt. “Are you sure? You smell like rot and ash.”

You wave him off. “Yes, yes. I'm sure. If you'll excuse me.” You push past him without another word. You can only keep yourself lucid for so long this way. The crowd is slowly returning to their revelry, but as you survey the room you don't see any sign of your companions. {Alright, I'm here. I'm standing in the common room. I'm roughly ten minutes from spewing the contents of my gut all over the floor. Where are you?}

Fulvia's voice filters through the connection. {We have acquisitioned rooms upstairs, you will be sharing with Profectus in the room at the very end of the hall. Mortia and I are next door, and Darzi and Chryssa are sharing the first room on the right.}

You quickly retreat towards the stairs at the back of the common room, ascending to the second floor. Smoke from the floor below fills the air, cloying and sweet. Mortia's voice fills your thoughts as you make your way towards the door at the end of the hall, her tone colored with concern. {What's wrong with your stomach? Did you get attacked on the way here? I could probably brew up some sort of tonic if you give me some time.}

>>
You push the door to your room open to find Profectus clumsily trying to unclog the bowl of a hookah pipe, his strategy seems to be just burning out the gunk crusting the brass, but he doesn't seem to be having much success. When he sees you he smiles, waving cheerily. “Good to see you didn't get lost on the way here Mik. Find anything interesting in that temple you were exploring?”

You wish you could match his enthusiasm but if you keep this spell up much longer you're going to have to start actually exerting yourself, and that's not something you want to do right now. Stumbling over to the open window you reach up and undo the clasp on your helmet. Rather than sliding off as usual when you try to tug it off, it feels stuck in the back of your neck. Each tug sends pain shooting up and down your spine, but eventually you free yourself and the spike retracts.

Almost immediately you drop the helmet and pitch forward, your hands barely managing to find the window sill and prevent you from falling to the sands below. You spew bile and what little food was left in your gut out the window, gagging violently for the next six minutes as your stomach spasms. At some point you must pass out, because you wake up on the floor with Profectus running a wet rag over your face.

You try to push yourself up, but in the end you need Profectus' help. Once you're on your feet you gesture weakly towards the bed opposite the one he's claimed for himself and he walks you over. Only once safely seated do you risk speaking. “Thank you, Prof.” Your voice is hoarse, and your throat burns with every word you speak. “Tell Mortia a tonic sounds good.”

He doesn't even ask, just pushes open the door and starts pounding on the door immediately next to yours. Mortia opens the door looking both confused and vaguely annoyed, though when she sees you struggling to remove the cuirass of your armor her expression shifts to one of concern. She and Profectus speak in hushed tones, before they both march off down the hall. You hear their footsteps descending the stairs to the common room.

You assume they're going to gather ingredients. Fulvia peaks out of the doorway once their gone and, seeing that you're struggling, moves to assist. Though you'd like to tell her that you can remove your own armor, the sad truth is you probably can't. At least, not without risking another fit of gagging. After several minutes worth of struggle you're finally left in only your underrobes and your pants, your armor tucked into your cloak and your cloak folded neatly on a bedside table.

Fulvia pats you affectionately on the head, a gesture you find a touch patronizing. “There you are, Dux. I recommend that you avoid indulging in narcotics in the future. Fever, chills, joint aches, nausea, and intestinal spasms are common side effects after the drug wears off. If you use frequently, you might develop a physical dependency. In that case the withdrawal might kill you.” She sounds like she's reciting off a list, was this sort of thing common in the Rhynian arm?. “You should rest.” She finally states matter-of-factly.

You sigh, crawling wearily underneath the covers of your bed and trying to get comfortable. “Thanks, Fulvia.” You mutter weakly. She simply nods before sweeping out of the room. The next thing you know you're getting shaken gently awake by Mortia, who's sitting at your bedside with a massive cup of something black and oily. Oddly it smells quite sweet, like citrus and poppy flowers.

She pushes the cup into your hands with little warning. “Drink this, I didn't have much to work with since I'm trying to save most of my materials for the jungle.”

You glare at it suspiciously for a moment before taking a tentative sip. It taste awful, and burns like hell going down. Not to mention it's the consistency of pond scum. Pulling it from your lips you let it rest in your lap. “Mortia, what's actually in this?”

She frowns. “What, you don't trust me?” She starts counting off the ingredients on her fingers. “It's powdered poppy straw, grain alcohol, orange juice, liquorice, and the dried penis of a bull.”

You've already finished drinking half of the vile concoction before you quite process what she'd just told you. Did she just say she put the dried penis of a bull in here? Why? How would that benefit you in any way? Is she just making a joke at your expense? Pulling the cup away from your lips you peer into the thick, oily liquid in an attempt to discern any chunks of penis, but it all seems fairly homogeneous.

Before you can further agonize over the ingredients of this tonic you start to feel unbearably tired. True to her word, your stomach isn't churning any more. You think your fever might be breaking too, you're not freezing cold anymore and you're pouring sweat.

Mortia carefully plucks the cup from your hands and smiles wide, clearly pleased with herself. “Glad it worked, I was worried it might just make you lose control of your limbs. Sleep well, Mik!”

You try to respond but you're already slumping back into your mattress, your eyes sliding closed despite your best efforts to keep them open.

When you awake the next morning you feel remarkably better. Your muscles aren't sore, your head isn't pounding, your throat doesn't burn. It's like the events of the night before have been washed away. You're not sure it's just the result of a good night's sleep or that tonic that Mortia gave you.

Leveraging yourself into a seated position, you find Profectus snoring away in the bed opposite your own. Judging by the light outside it's early morning, but already you can hear the chatter of the patrons in the inn below. It smells like fried pork and scrambled eggs, your stomach is quick to remind you just how unbelievably hungry you are.

You'll also be getting some runes.
I'm thinking I'll give you
>Remote: A modifying rune which allows an enchantment to effect a target not in direct contact with the enchanted object
>Mark: A rune which designates an area for a Remote rune to effect.
>Touch: The enchantment will effect whatever touches the enchanted object. Can also be used to make an enchantment that only activates in response to touch.
>Vys: A base rune. Enchantments built around this rune will effect vys.
>Destroy: An affecting rune. Will create an enchantment which destroys whatever base rune the enchantment is build around.

So putting these all together. Destroy+ Remote Large Vys in the presence of Touch is an enchantment which would destroy vys in a large area designated by the Mark rune. It would be activated whenever anything touches the enchanted object..

You slip as quietly as you're able to out from beneath the covers and grab your cloak off the bedside table, draping it over your shoulders. The lengths to which you go in order to avoid waking Profectus are probably unnecessary, considering how heavily he sleeps, but it would be rude to just stomp around the room.

You don't bother pulling on your Vatis robes or anything like that, you just slip out the door and shut it softly behind you. You don't encounter anyone in the upstairs hallway so simply continue on to the common room below. A pot of lentil stew is buried within the coals of the hearth in the center of the room, bits of pork added in to flavor the soup. Next to the pot a long plate of black iron has been laid out, on which slices of fatback cook in long rows.

The eggs seem to be cooked on demand in a small pan wielded expertly by a grey haired Samjan woman you presume to be the inn's cook. You grab a plate off a pile of clean dishes arranged next to the hearth and move down a line of other patrons, plating yourself up as you go. The soup isn't quite ready yet, so you leave it alone. Instead you heap your plate with bacon and a fried egg. Finally you pour yourself a cup of diluted wine and look around for any sign of your companions.

It doesn't take long for you to spot Chryssa, Darzi, and Fulvia all sitting together at a table. Chrys and Darzi seem to be in the midst of enjoying their respective meals, while Fulvia waits patiently for them to finish. You move to join them, but as you're passing a table populated by fishermen you catch a brief snippet of conversation which draws your attention.

Have you got a good feeling about Aethertouched quest?
>>
You pause, sliding into a seat at the same table as the two fishermen. They watch you warily as you set your plate down and make yourself comfortable. “What's this I heard about a dragon?”

The fisherman who you'd first heard talking is the one who answers. “A friend of ours heard there was a dragon off to the west, nestled in a rock outcrop on the coast Said it was the size of three camels, with a long neck, four wings, and two legs. When he came stumbling in here shouting up and down about how this thing was just sleepin' away a couple miles west of the inn, Vasant gathered up a hunting party and headed out west to try and kill the thing.”

Four wings? Well, you suppose it doesn't totally rule out that possibility that the dragon in question is Zahak, but it would be pretty difficult to mistake Zahak for having four wings.“You know, I've actually fought dragons. I was journeying in the north and came across a young one feeding.” You roll up the sleeves of your robes to display the bright red tattoos which cover your forearms. “Dragged the corpse back with me and ended up encountering a nomad tribe who started calling me Parbau. Think you could point me in the direction of this dragon?”

The other man, an all together older gentleman with a long beard streaked with grey and a pug nose that's been broken at least twice, nods. “You go west until you see a plateau with a canyon cutting through the center. Pass through the canyon, you'll pass an old Hiacian fort if you're goin' the right way, and when you exit on the other side you should be on the coast. Start heading to your left and you'll eventually see the outcrop we're talkin' about. It's a great fishing spot. Probably about... oh, ten miles out over all.”

(1/2)
>>
Huh, an old Hiacian fort? That might be worth investigating in its own right. You thank the men and politely excuse yourself to go join your companions, feeling out the connection you share with Zahak on the way. You can tell he's close by, but you can't quite seem to open the connection. If you had to guess it's probably because he's still asleep. Still, you know he's closer than ten miles.

You take a seat next to Darzi, who greets you with a wave before going back to tearing chunks off a strip of bacon. Chryssa merely inclines her head in greeting. Fulvia does the same, though she at least bothers to actually speak. “It is good to see that you are feeling better, Mikhael. I take it the concoction that Mortia produced worked well?”

You smile contentedly. “It worked perfectly, though I do question her choice of ingredients. I appreciate the help, by the way. Without you I probably would've been uselessly trying to pull my armor off for another hour at least.”

Darzi covers her mouth politely while she finishes chewing. “If I'd known you were in such bad shape I would've fetched you something to eat or drink, and scolded you liberally of course, but I was already asleep.”

>Tell them about the dragon to the west. You don't think it's Zahak, but you're still not totally certain.
>Keep it to yourself for now, just enjoy your meal. The dragon probably isn't any of your business anyway.

How about we tell them about the dragon, but mention it's probably not Zahak and we shouldn't worry too much about it.

Can we ask Fulvia if she knows of any significant Hiacin events or battles nearby? Referencing the floating geoliths in the valley.

You lean forward, lowing your voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Did you hear about that dragon that they found hanging out off to the west? I don't think it's Zahak, it seems like it's too big and too far away to be Zahak, but I wonder what it's doing this far south.”

Darzi adopts a look of concern. “Wait, I hadn't heard about this. Who discovered it? Has it attacked anyone?”

You shake your head. “No, I don't think so. Some local fisherman discovered it at a local fishing hole and came running here. Someone gathered up a hunting party and set out to kill it. Seems like a bad idea, if you ask me. It's three times the size of Zahak, and it hasn't attacked a soul. It's just sleeping in some rocks by the sea.”

Fulvia interjects as politely as she can. “My Dux, I think it would be wise to avoid this creature. As you said, it is thrice the size of Zahak and Zahak is already quite powerful. Trying to fight such a creature will no doubt simply anger it without the proper equipment, equipment I'm sure these peasants lack. If it does not interfere with our journey, why should we disturb its rest?”

Chryssa nods her head. “She raises a good point. While no doubt a danger to the locals, it poses no real threat to us. It would be best to simply leave it alone.”

Unfortunately before you can respond a great bellowing roar tears through the early morning quiet of the tavern, forceful enough to shake the various pots and pans hung up around the hearth and send a handful clattering to the stone floor of the inn. The ground shakes as a heavy thud reverberates through the tavern, followed shortly by the clattering of stones and the scraping of claws along tile.

It would seem that the dragon has decided to interfere with your journey.

kek wouldn't this dragon attack our families territory thus be our problem?
>>
>>42450330
Feasibly, yeah. You're not in your family lands yet though. You're about to enter the contested lands held by many minor lords.
>>
>>42450351
can we slay them and lay claim to their lands?

That's not typically how feudal nobility works.

banish conquest quest when?
its about miks kid who can only master one element so that he can't go down the mage route, and the reason he can only do one element is because mik tried to make a super magic kid by messing with us in our mother womb.
we can go above grandmaster.
>>
>>42450414
He's gotten bored with questing. He doesn't like us anymore.

Soon he will leave us for good.
>>

>we can go above grandmaster
So Grandmaster?

There is no upper limit to it. Not all GMs are the same. Stop with your Dragon Ball nonsense.

I actually have been really putting some thought into how to run a dynastic quest without turning it into a Civ Quest. I think I'd probably run it like a Game of Thrones Quest, but those tend to be crunch heavy and short lived. I'd need to tweak that formula to make it work.
>>
>>42450741
And then rumors will spread when we hop on that niggas back and dogfight the other dragon like a badass.
