PREVIOUSLY ON MAGICAL GIRL LIBERTY: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=Magical+Girl+Liberty

With a click and a snap, the anti-magic collar came onto your neck before you could react. Nope. This was not another nightmare. Knives was very much real, and she was very much as insane as ever. “Was ist los?” She leans in, her nose nearly rubbing up against yours. “Not happy to see me again?” She looks down. “You know, wearing something like that, it’s quite cute.” She gently jabs the knife into the nightgown you’re wearing, tearing a hole right through. The anti-magic knife stings at you as she pokes you. “I’d prefer to see it on the floor though.” She grins, licking her teeth a bit.

“… what are you doing here,” you whisper. “Where are my friends?”

She sits up, immediately proceeding to place her stocking clad leg on your chest. “Oh them?” She waves you off. “We captured them. They’re with the other monks, but as for me…” She takes off of one of her white gloves, now gently picking at her carefully manicured nails with the tip of her knife. “We followed you here.”

“How?”

“Oh it wasn’t hard,” she says. “Honestly, we were only in the area to observe how the bucktoothed Japse were using their dinosaurs. But we happened to notice this.” She reaches into her breastpocket, and then pulls out a photograph, showing one of your shields being thrown into the air at Tiny. The angle of it makes it imply that it was shot from above. There were no Zeps in the sky, unless it were the Little Lady, stealth capabilities and what not. Or worse, they have another Stealth Zep in their arsenal. “So, we simply tracked your movements from the air, followed you up here, and raided the monastery while you were sleeping.”

“Clever.” You squint at her. “For you.”

She grins, going red in the cheeks as she pulls you up and kisses you on the neck. You have to stifle out a hiss as she happily rubs herself along your body. “Aaahhh! You complimented me! That is something I have always wanted from you!” She holds you away. “That, and your delicious body.” She glances away, thinking. “Now that I think about it, I suppose I could dump the head and keep the body.” What. “… nah, I think I’ll keep you whole.”

“Listen, Knives.” She blinks, tilting her head. “You won’t get away with this.”

“You’re right. I’ll mostly get away with you first.” She grabs the hem of your skirt, then forces the cloth right into your mouth, exposing yourself to her. She grins, quirking her eyebrows up. “Come on, it’ll be fun!” She flashes knife, and then licks her teeth again. “There’s a lot you can do with a knife in bed you know!”

To your relief, the door opens, revealing a gasmasked Nazi soldier. “Major.” Knives turns her head, glaring at him. He steps back, apparently stunned and scared by her. “The monks.”

She sighs, then presses her forehead against yours. “Wait here.” She stands up, dusting her uniform off and then giving her cape a quick flick to loosen it up. “I will be back for you. Soldat, stay here with her, don’t let her move.” He nods, and steps past Knives. Once she’s gone, he locks the door and stares directly at you, resting his hands on his assault rifle.

The Magisch Korps really got… a downgrade actually. You remember they used to be shipping anti-magic rifles to every trooper available but now, it seems they’ve switched back to regular ballistic weaponry. Even the gas mask lenses no longer glow red, and are simply dark without being able to see into it. They must be desperate for cash after losing Engelhardt you guess.

He doesn’t even the armbands or any markings signifying the Tiered Wundersoldaten system. Maybe they’ve completely abandoned it with Knives in charge.

But enough talk, you have to figure out a way out of the room. It’s small, and while you’ve got an anti-magic collar on, she didn’t bother to restrain you with anything else. You’re basically free to do whatever against a well-trained soldier of the Third Reich.

Poor guy.

To heck with waiting to get your virgin body ravished by a Nazi, you’re bugging out! You point past the soldier. “Look, over there!”

He points to you, glaring at you from beneath his gas mask. “Nice try, Amerikaner! But I am falling for zat!” Damn.

You cross your arms. “Fine.” You look past him again. “Oh. Knives. It’s you again.” He stiffens in fear, then turns around to the door. Ha! You quickly burst away from the bed and lead out the window. Your nightgown tears at the edges, and you can feel your skin get scrapped by the masonry, but you made it!

“Hey!” He leans out the window and watches as you escape into the alley. “Alarm! Alarm!” he shouts as he runs back inside to alert other soldiers. Okay, good. Now, the monastery isn’t THAT big, but you should be able to find a place to disappear into. Like for example, a wood crate big enough for you to crouch underneath! You quickly pick it up and duck underneath. A small slit in the wood lets you see out too, perfect.

You start creeping around to the main square of monastery, and then immediately stop once you see the gathering of all the monks, all twelve of them including the one you spoke to last night, and Sumire and Rana. Knives is looking over at all of them, accompanied by a squad of other Stosstruppen, and Tiny. Knives in particular looks to Tiny. “So, little one?” Tiny looks up at her, obviously peeved at having been freed instead of freeing herself. “What relation do you have with Lady Liberty?”

Tiny places her hands on her hips, glaring holes into Knives. “No relation. She’s another Magical Girl for me to kill. What’s it to you?”

Knives scratches her chin. “The Japanese hired you, yes?” She nods. “Very well. We’re hiring you now.” Knives holds out her hand, and one of the Stosstruppen immediately dumps an NCO’s Peaked Cap into it. “From now on, you are a member of Kampfgruppe Messer, the Magisch Korps.” Tiny looks confused as Knives places the hat on top of Tiny’s head. It immediately slumps over, very much too big for her. “… we might need a bigger hat.”

Tiny grabs the hat and crushes it in her hands. “I don’t care about hats! I care about killing Magical Girls!”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Knives holds up her hands. “Slow down!” She grins. “I like your straightforwardness.” You look to see Sumire roll her eyes, while Rana simply cowers in distress at having been captured and bound. “However, ground rule, Liberty is not to be killed, nor are her friends like these two, ja?”

“Why not?”

Knives smiles. “I want to break Lady Liberty myself, ja? Have you ever corrupted a Magical Girl and turned her into a mindless slave for pleasures of the flesh?” Tiny stares up at Knives in disgust. “I’m taking your look as a no, well, neither have I honestly. But I have always wanted it.”

You shake your head. Knives, just stop.

“Major!” The soldier assigned to guard you runs out and grabs her attention. He communicates to Knives further in German, and Knives’ characteristic vicious grin suddenly is replaced by a look of pure fury.

“Why you!” The soldier cowers a bit as Knives advances on him, drawing one of her glowing anti-magical knives. “I-…” She stares at him, gritting her teeth, clutching her knife and drawing it below his neck. “I… can’t kill you. It’s too time consuming to replace you lot now. Now go-“ She stomps her foot. “Why am I still speaking English!? Los!” She points to the other soldiers. “Schnell! Los, los!” The other soldiers quickly disperse, leaving only two guards for the monks and for the girls. Knives herself along with Tiny begin sweeping the monastery looking for you.

You quietly sneak around the sides of the monastery. Occasionally you have to stop and act like a crate to any passing soldiers who sweep the area. You’re not surprised they’d overlook a regular crate that’s just lying around, you’d probably do it too. It takes the better part of nearly half an hour to inch your way closer and closer to the guards overlooking the prisoners.

You’re getting cramps in your legs.

Finally, you’re behind one of them. You pop up and surprise him, dragging him underneath the box and choking him out. The other soldier looks over to see his companion gone, and goes to investigate. You stop it with another choke and slam into the ground. Sumire and Rana look back to see you rise out of the crate, torn up nightgown and everything. “Libby!” Sumire grins, then looks down at your torn dress. “… I like that look.”

“Shut up.” You toss the crate away, then start ripping up their binds. Rana smiles at you, giving a quick thank you before freeing the monks. “I don’t know how long we’ve got but we have to make a run for it.”

“We can’t make a run for it,” says Sumire. “We’re on a mountain in the middle of occupied China surrounded by Nazis surrounded by IJA in all directions. And I don’t think a very lewdly torn nightgown like yours is going to help us. Japanese don’t have good taste in women.”

“Oh shut up!” You quickly grab a cloth rag lying on the ground and wrap it around your waist for modesty. “Now think with me, we need a plan.”

The Monk stands up, pushing his glasses up. “I am sorry we could not protect you, Liberty.”

“It’s fine,” you say.

“No, they have our notes on the spirits we have been taking care of here,” he says. “They have already taken it to their ship. I only fear what they mean to do with such knowledge on how spirits function.” You hesitate a bit, trying to find words. What ARE the Nazis planning to do with a bunch of ghosts? “But I believe we can help you now.”

“How?” asks Rana. She comes over, fidgeting at the anti-magic collar sitting on her neck.

“There is a secret escape passage, which leads directly down into a disused mineshaft. You will be able to escape through there.” You nod. That’s a good start, that’s a very good start. “It will lead to the bottom of the mountain and there you may be able to make your escape.”

“Good,” you say. “Where is it?”

“The library.” Damn it. They’ll be looking for you in the library.

So the plan now is…

> “I’ll create a diversion. The Monk will lead people down to the passage and I’ll follow behind.”
> “We can all go together. There’s strength in numbers.”
> “No. This monastery is too important to give up. We have to throw them outta here.

“As attractive as the idea of escaping sounds, think about it, if we just gave the Nazis access to this little spot, who knows what they could do.” You walk up to the Monk. “I know that… actually I don’t know what kind of Buddhism or whatever stuff you practice, but we have to stay and fight. We have to throw them out of this monastery for good if we want to make sure the Nazis don’t get their hands on any more ghostly… stuff.”

The Monk looks down on you, concerned. He looks back at his fellow monks, who all nod in approval at him. “Very well. We will fight.”

“Great!” Sumire grins, clapping her hands as she walks up to you guys. “… but you know, collars. None of us have the Clippers to take them off.”

“#5 should have a Wing over the area to deploy something, we can signal him,” you say. “But first it starts with drawing them into an ambush. Do we have any guns?” Everyone shakes their heads. “… do we have any kind of weapons whatsoever?”

One monk motions to the gate. “We have the spirits.”

The Monk looks back at him. “We can’t let them loose in the monastery! Who knows what they will do!”

“We don’t have any choice,” says Sumire. “Besides, the spirits probably won’t kill us, right?” The monks all look at each other skeptically. “Wow you guys are bad at this.”

“Fine, we let the spirits loose.” You place your hands on your hips. “Open the gate.” The monks nod, running to the gate. Rana and Sumire grab the guns off the unconscious guards. “Once that’s done, hide. Pick off any lone stragglers. Don’t try to be a hero. We’ll do the talking.” The Monk nods, running to the gate.

Sumire looks over the gun, then hands it to you. You shake your head. “Oh? What? Guns kill your dad or something?” You stare at her, then nod slowly. “… oh. Okay.” She takes the gun back. “Too soon. Sorry.”

As the gates open, the Monk picks up an incense burner and lights a torch. He calls out in Chinese to the foggy wasteland that is the graveyard. You, Rana, and Sumire go hide behind some nearby crates as the spirits come flooding. Their ghostly green forms wash and splash all over the monastery walls and through the gates, coming into the buildings. You suddenly hear the shouting and shooting of the Magisch Korps soldiers as they come upon them.

“Yes!” Rana pumps her fist. “It’s working!”

Knives busts through a wall. A ghostly soldier roars, charging at her. She responds in kind, swiping her knife across him and splitting the ghost apart, permanently. It fades into the air, never to be seen again. Another spirit tries coming up behind, but she immediately cuts him apart with a flurry of knife strikes. Tiny follows up, holding onto an anti-magic pistol that Knives must’ve loaned to her as she blasts and snipes spirits and ghosts left and right.

“It’s not working!” yells Sumire.

Knives holds up a radio, yelling into it in German. More soldiers come up to support the two, blasting ineffectually at the ghosts trying to kill them. The monks all run into hiding positions.

“Now’s our chance!” Sumire stands up, taking a shot. One of the soldiers takes it, falling to the ground with a hole through his mask. Everyone runs for cover as Rana and Sumire begin suppressive fire. You see Tiny run off to one side, holding an anti-magic pistol in one hand. You see Knives on another side, holding a briefcase with what looks to be some important papers.

Okay, go for the one who wants to kill you, or the one who wants to kill you and have sex with you (not necessarily in that order).

You grab yourself a small crate and rush across the crossfire at Knives. “Hey, Kraut!” you yell. She looks over from stabbing a ghost to death. Not enough to save her from getting a box over the head. Splinters and shrapnel fly out as you slam it over head, dazing her. And in that moment, you grab some of the papers sticking out of the briefcase and stuff them down your gown.

She rips the crate off of her head. “Eh, what’s up, Doc!?” she yells. “You think you’re in a cartoon!?” She throws it at you, ineffectually. As you step out of the way, you rush ahead and give her a punch to the gut, sending her back in another stunned daze. “Oh! So much fight out of you!” She grins, brandishing her knife towards you. “Show me more!” She licks her lips.

You rush at her again, dodging and evading her knife strikes. You try to keep her at arms length, just enough to get a couple of punching blows in, but far enough that you can react to her knife thrusts and slashes. “Come on!” she says. “I can do this all day!” You charge at her again, hoping for a solid uppercut to knock her out.

Only for her to nick your chest in a wild slash. You scream, falling to the ground. She blinks, staring at her knife, then down at you. “Huh.” You try to gather yourself quick, going down on all fours. “So, I’d heard that you had some sort of weakpoint now.” She grabs your hair, pulling you up. Your head stings as she tugs hard on your hair. “Guess I found it~!” she says in a singsong manner.

“Leave her alone!” Sumire tackles Knives off you, letting you drop and recover yourself. Sumire quickly points the gun down at Knives, who stares up at Sumire in shock.

But it’s rendered moot by Tiny shooting the barrel off. Sumire drops the now useless gun and watches as Knives and Tiny jump up the side of a building. There, a few cables await them. You look up as something begins casting a shadow over the monastery.

They do have another Stealth Zep.

> EXPERIMENTAL STEALTH ZEPPELIN #2 <
> ?? <

It fades into view like a paper being burnt to ash in reverse. The hangar bay is open, revealing a dark interior where planes hang on arresting wires and hooks. Rana comes over, as do the Monks. Before anyone could get a shot off, a smoke charge quickly explodes around Tiny and Knives, allowing them to escape.

“Damn it!” Sumire stomps her foot as the Zep starts rising. Knives waves at you from the hangar bay as it shuts closed. It then begins rushing away from the monastery. “How do they escape, every time!?”

You pull the papers you stole out of the briefcase from your gown. “Don’t worry. I got this.” You hold it up, and Rana and Sumire look at it.

“What is it?” asks Rana.

You look down, and narrow your eyes. “… I can’t read German. What is it, Sumire?”

She takes it from you, skeptical, then reads it over. “It’s… it’s research notes towards merging a spirit with a robotic body. Apparently the Magisch Korps are short on manpower since Engelhardt bit it so they’re trying to figure out how to replace it all.”

You sigh, groaning. Well, at least the monastery is safe for now.

The Monk walks up to you. “We are in your debt, Liberty.” You smile, nodding to him. “If you ever need anything from us, we will do it.”

“Thanks, but that ain’t necessary,” you say. “If you could…” You groan, holding your chest.

“Hold on,” says Sumire. She takes a look at the wound. “Yikes. Let me get that fixed up for you.”

“No, no, I’m fine,” you say.

“Alright, fine.” You sigh. “Rana, go radio #5 for Clippers, tell him what happened, tell him we need transport too. Alright?” She nods, quickly heading to the watchtower. You watch as the Zeppelin speeds away, then immediately fades into away like burning embers, completely gone in the colors of the day. You lost them.

You sigh. You could have had them if it weren’t for that shard.

Rana is busy talking with #5 while you sit in the baths with Sumire. She wears a towel as she cleans up the blood and muck all over the body, but especially around the cut on your chest. “Anti-magic,” says Sumire. “Not even once. Not even that deep. Guess it must have just made the shard just uh… hurt you I guess.” She tilts her head. “Ever think of wearing a breastplate or something?”

“No,” you say. “I’m a girl first, not a knight. So is it good yet?”

“Almost…” She places down the bandage and tapes it down. “There.” She smiles, patting you on the shoulder. “You know, you scared me for a second there, Libby. I really thought that she had got you, you know?”

“They won’t kill me.” You cross your arms. “Besides, I’ll get used to it.”

“Really?” She tilts her head, not really looking faithful in that statement. Well, fine, Sumire, have no faith in anything then.

“Look. It’s fine. As long as nobody punches me or stabs me in the chest.” You gently thump your chest, and still you grimace in pain. “… I’m fine.”

Sumire crosses her arms. “Libby. We gotta talk.” You tilt your head. “You gotta get that thing out of you.”

“We can’t. Not without killing me.” You fold up your arms. “We just have to accept it for now, and I just have to sort of… stop rushing into things. I got two big shields after all and-“ There’s a loud boom outside. That must be the drop capsule. “… look, Sumire, you don’t have to worry about it, okay? It’s my thing, not yours.”

“Well…” She shrugs, nonchalant. “Alright.” You pout a bit. Really? “What? You said not to worry.”

“I mean- a little worry would be nice.”

“You can’t always get what you want.” She pinches your cheek, jiggling it a little.

“Hey guys!” Rana comes in, holding the anti-magic clippers in hand. “Collar clippers came in!” She kneels down between you two, then snaps her own off. She quickly snaps Sumire’s off, then your own. You feel the magic powers start to flow in your body once more. You could transform whenever you want now. “Oh, and I talked to #5, he said he’s talking to a contact in the resistance towards getting us transport to Japan.”

“We’re going to Japan?” asks Sumire. You’re sure you told her about this earlier. Is she now getting doubts about it.

“Yeah,” you say. “Problem?”

“It’s just…” Sumire scratches the back of her neck, frowning a bit. “I mean, I would really rather not go back.”

You cross your arms. “You don’t have to if you don’t want to you know.” You a pout a little bit. “I mean, it’d be nice to keep you around for a little longer, and me and Rana’d be pretty lost in Japan and everything…” Sumire tilts her head, looking quite guilty.

“I-… I mean I can go,” she says. Sweet! “Just don’t expect much alright. There’s a lot I’m not proud of in Japan. So… try not to like push me or anything.” You pat her on the head. The very fact that she’s willing to go home to her old stomping grounds is enough. You won’t push your luck with her for now.

“Anything else, Rana?”

She nods. “#5 had the documents copied over during our talk, and he can back up that the Magisch Korps isn’t what it used to be. Our real big threat for now are the Japs. For now, he wants our top priority to be finding the Atlas, nothing else matters.” Fair enough. “As for our transport, he put me through to a guy in the resistance.” She leans in. “They sounded like communists.”

Of course it’s communists. “What’d they say?”

“They said they can provide us a boat. They’re down near Hong Kong.” Rana smiles. “Isn’t that great?”

“It is.” You stand up, rubbing your chest down, sighing a little in suppressed pain and a little bit of relief. “For now, let’s take the time to rest, and then we’ll move on from the monastery. Alright?” Everyone nods. “Good, good. We’ll leave after lunch.”

The monks were very gracious in their goodbye, showering you with gifts, food, supplies, and even horses to help make the trek a little less arduous. Still, it took a while traveling from the mountains. Rana had pretty much fallen asleep in the saddle, and even you and Sumire were trying to fight off sleep by the time you got to the outskirts of the city. One of the few bastions of western civilization left. You suppose #5 meant to land you here but circumstances must have gotten in the way.

You, Rana, and Sumire step off of your horses and settle around the Hong Kong area. You’re in a square, a bustling market square. Docks should be further east, but the roads are getting quite tangled up. “Come on,” you say. You motion them on to the docks. Walking on foot should be healthy for you right now, and the horses. You obviously can’t bring them with you to Japan, but they are still beasts of burden. Might as well lift the burden a tad.

Rana blinks, stepping next to you. “It’s so lively here.”

“Enjoy it while it lasts,” says Sumire. “Couple of years, people here are going to be speaking Japanese.”

“Hey, we can beat them,” you say.

“America can, China probably can’t,” says Sumire.

Hmph. You never figured Sumire for a pessimist.

Alas, you reach the docks. You meet with an old Chinese sailor, operating out of a rusty, creaking, boat that looks barely like its floating. “Hm?” He turns his cap up, looking down at you three. “Alright. Get in,” he says. Rana smiles, stepping aboard, happy to be on a boat. Sumire as well hops in, bringing in the luggage. That just leaves you.

The sailor steps up to the wheel and starts the engine, and the boat slowly floats its way out of the harbor. Sumire and Rana sit on the edges, watching the moon. It’s intensely late at night, and you really should be getting some sleep after all that happened today. You sit down next to Sumire, and find her already cradling Rana’s head in her lap. She’s fast asleep. “… really?” you whisper.

Sumire narrows her eyes. “Hey, this could be you.”

“As if,” you mutter. She pouts a bit, still petting Rana as she slumbers peacefully. “Sumire, I want your honest answer.” She tilts her head, attentive now. “… am I soft?”

She looks down at your chest. “… in the right areas, yes.”

“I’m guessing you ain’t soft then.” You cross your arms, a bit annoyed that she’s treating your simple honest question like a joke.

“Ah, come on!” She gently pushes you. “You aren’t soft, Libby, is that you want to hear?” You look back at her, and find her genuinely smiling at you. No laughter, no snide smirking, no nothing. Just a warm smile and a look that reminds her that Sumire is less of a co-worker and more of a friend. “Seriously. You might’ve lost some bite with the shard in your chest, but that doesn’t mean you’ve lost your bark or your teeth. You’re still Libby to me.”

You bite your lip a bit, blushing now. “Oh. Well, thanks.” You place your hands on your laps, fidgeting a bit. “Honestly, it really means a lot, you know.”

“Hey, look, I told you once and I’ll tell you again, even with that shard in you you’re still the Libby I know. You’re just…” She rolls her eyes, not mocking, more in contemplation. “… a little easier to beat now.” You quirk your brow, giving her an angry frown. “Just saying.” She points to your chest. “How is it by the way, has it healed?”

You pat your chest, grimacing slightly at it. “Yeah, the cut’s mostly healed.” You unbutton your blouse a bit, then look down at the bandage, and peel it off gently. “Yep, mostly healed. Barely a mark. Still hurts a little bit though.”

“Awww…” She leans over. “You want onee-sama to kiss it better for you, imouto-chan?” You push her face away. Get out of here. “Hehehe!” You can’t help but giggle yourself now. What the hell is an oneesama anyway?

Maybe it’ll come to you with a good night’s sleep.

“Thanks, sir.” He nods, tipping his cap as he lets you drop down into the cold waters. The lonely beach on Japan’s shore is a good place to drop off. Rana shivers as Sumire holds onto her, dredging themselves ashore. You start shoving your way through the water, keeping your backpack high as you make your way to the sand. You watch the fishing boat leave, and go back to Hong Kong, hopefully not to be intercepted by the IJN.

Sumire lays down on the beach. “Ugh, it’s been ages since I’ve been to the beach. Did you bring my bathing suit?” she asks you. You gently kick her, rousing her up. “Ow! Come on!”

“We’ve got work to do.” You pull out a map. During the night, you marked out locations of interest that you might want to explore. “Here, everyone take a knee. Here’s where we can go.”

“There it is.” You point ahead to the castle on the coast. The towering high structures within are dilapidated, old, worn, and condemned. Even the walls look they’re falling apart, with a very visible breach on the end you’re currently facing. “Well, as the poem says, once more unto the breach.” You nudge a very tired Sumire and a tired Rana as you head down the hill towards it.

Rana asks you, “So if we investigate this castle, we’ll find something?”

“That’s the hope.”

She bites her lip. “Is it haunted?”

“Probably not,” says Sumire. “If it were, I’m sure the Japanese would find a way to weaponized that too.” Dinosaurs and ghosts, that’d be a heck of a mixture to fight. Japanese ghost dinosaurs. Hilarious when said altogether but not so when you’re probably going to fight them. You make it to the breach, then help Rana in first, then Sumire, and then the two of you help up the stoney sloped cliff into the castle’s high walls. You all look around at the aging wood and paper of what was once a mighty battlement.

“Look at this!” Rana points to several holes in the wall. “These look like bulletholes!”

“Those are,” says Sumire. “This castle might’ve been a bastion for the Samurai during the Meiji restoration, Imperial soldiers must have really let them have it.” Rana scratches her chin, no longer scared, but now curious as you begin exploring the castle.

“Scared?” you ask to Sumire. She shrugs.

“More superstitious,” she says. “The Samurai are long gone you know?” She sighs a bit, crossing her arms. “But looking at Japan now, you’d never believe they were.” You grimace a bit, now kind of regretting asking. It’d be best not to push Sumire on any topic regarding her former home.

[1/?]

>>42425087

“Up there!” Rana points up to the tallest building of the castle. “That could be where our Atlas is, it certainly looks important.” You nod. Good call.

“Alright, let’s go.” You move up to the doors of what seems to be the palace, and then bust them in. In there to greet you are dusty cobweb covered walls, rotting and moldy wood floors, and what look to be bloodstains and bulletholes strewn all about.

Yep, this place was definitely a battlefield once. You wonder why they just abandoned it here. You start heading upwards, up the stairs. Thankfully, there’s a lot of natural light coming in from what seem to be holes created by cannon balls. So no need for a flashlight or anything.

“Hey, look at this!” Rana walks over to something on the floor, and picks it up. “It’s a katana!” She playfully slashes the air with it. Admittedly, it does actually look quite good. “What do you think?” She grins, taking a mocking samurai pose with it. “Do I look threatening?”

“As threatening as a rabbit,” you say. She pouts a bit. “Drop it and let’s go.” She nods, following along again.

You actually manage to reach the top floor, the palace. Sumire frowns a bit, looking around the hall. No furniture, no paintings or livery, no weapons, no nothing remains after the fact. Just emptiness and lots of spiders. You sigh. Maybe the Atlas isn’t here, or maybe it was already looted-

“AAAHHH!” Rana screams, coming around for a corner. “There’s a body!”

Oh.

You and Sumire rush towards her, and indeed find the body of a Samurai, having been speared by what seem to be multiple bayonets. His armor is still pristine however, and the mask does little to cover up that its nothing but a skeleton underneath. But in his hand lies a book. Could this be the Atlas? You kneel down, and look at Sumire and Rana. They nod, standing around you, ready just in case it explodes or something. You gently pull on it.
>>
>>42425105
[3/3]

“NO!” You jump. Sumire and Rana step back as well. The not-actually-dead Samurai lies back again, clutching the book even further. “No.” You can see emptiness beneath the mask, but his bony fingers twitch as he keeps the book closer and closer. This Samurai is alive somehow, maybe through the magic of that sword in its seathe or his armor or some sort of curse.

> SKELETAL SAMURAI <
> A Loyal Soldier <

You stand up. “How is this possible?” you ask.

Sumire shrugs. “Maybe it’s a really good book.” She kneels down, and asks the skeleton something in Japanese. It shakes his head, communicating back in the language. “… he says it’s not the Atlas, but it will lead you to the Atlas’ true location. He is sworn by oath not to let anyone know of its location.”

“Why didn’t he burn the book?” you ask. “He could’ve burned it, lived on, been done with it.”

Sumire asks him that particular question, and to which the skeleton says, “Tried. Not enough time. Fought soldiers to the death. Died here. No one came here since. Too afraid. Started rotting. Cannot do anything but keep it in arms.”

You place your hands on your hips. What a dilemma.

You kneel down next to Sumire. “Sumire, ask him if he loves Japan.” She tilts her head, as if to ask why. “Just do it.” Sumire pauses, then nods and asks the Skeletal Samurai if he loves Japan. The skeleton turns his head to you, and stares at you through his war mask. You can see the faint glimmers of life beneath it, before there was emptiness but now.

He responds. “I love Japan. I died defending Japan. But I do not love war. I fought so my children would not. So my people would not. It broke my heart fighting fellow countrymen. All I want is peace.”

You nod. “We want peace too. But there are some bad folks who want to take the Atlas, and use it for some godawful purpose. We’re here to make sure that doesn’t happen.” You reach out for the book, and he quickly hugs it even tighter. “… look. Please, we’re not trying to break your oath. We’re trying to help you.” You grit your teeth a bit, then nod. “We’re trying to help Japan.”

The skeleton continues to stare at you. “My oath cannot be broken. Cannot let this book be moved from my arms.” You sigh, looking down. “I am sorry. But I trust no one with this book. Not even nice girls like you.”

Darn it.

“Um.” Rana looks out the window, calling you all over. “We have company.” You blink, then you and Sumire run over. You take the binoculars from Rana and look out. Out there come a huge squadron of tanks, a huge mess of infantry, and leading the assault is Knives, and Tiny at her side. Strange. You would’ve thought Knives would be backed up by the three much saner girls. Even stranger, she knows you’re here, she would’ve brought the Storm Ace too.

“It doesn’t look like they know we’re here,” says Sumire. “We might still have the element of surprise.” You look back at the skeleton, who still clutches the book. If you leave him now, Knives is sure to get her filthy grubby little hands on that book. You march on over. “Libby.”

“The enemy is coming,” you say. “You have to give us the book.”

He looks up at you, then shakes his head. “My master said no one is to have this book. My master cursed me for fleeing during a battle, and said the curse could be lifted if I guarded this book to the world’s bitter end.”

“That’s not going to mean much now,” you say. “They are coming. They want the book. We’re trying to help you. Please help us help you.” You look at him, pleading, nay, begging for him to just give up the book.

He lifts one boney hand. “Help me up.” You nod, grabbing the hand. It felt warm, even by all rights it should be cold. His armor clanks and clatters, banging against his skeleton. The lights in his eyes start glowing even brighter. “Must defend book.” He reaches back, and pulls out the huge sword rest on his back. The blade glimmers, having been pristine after all this time.

“That’s a big sword,” says Rana.

Sumire grins a little. “It’s what we call an Nodachi.”

“Must defend book,” he says. He starts marching out the door. He’s not seriously going to go out there and just try go up against tanks and machine guns is he!? “Must defend book!” he yells. He slams through a wall. “Banzai!”

“Come on,” you say. You, Sumire, and Rana begin following the skeleton closely. He stumbles his way down the stairs. He even completely collapses into a pile of bones during one particularly bad trip, but he reforms himself quite quickly and begins trundling down to meet the opponents at the gate.

“We’re not seriously going to let him fight,” says Sumire. “Are we?”

“It might be the only way we can let him be at peace,” you say. “Come on.”

The Skeleton Samurai barges out of the door and into the open sky. Briefly, he looks up, as if entranced by the clouds and the sun bearing down on him. This might be the first time in nearly a hundred years that he’s even seen the sky. The gate into the castle is blown open, and then crushed by a Type 89 Chi-Ro tank. As it rolls in with Knives and Tiny standing atop it, infantry in the dozens storm the castle.

But when they see the Skeleton Samurai standing alone at the palace doors, they stop, standing in awe.

Knives looks at him. “Hey! That book is legal property of the Empire of Japan! Hand it over!” She doesn’t seem particularly surprised that a walking talking skeleton is holding it.

“If you want it, come claim it!” yells the Samurai. He brandishes the great two-handed sowrd, the nodachi. The soldiers step back, scared witless. Knives yells at them to get moving, and claim the book. One brave soldier charges at him, stabbing his bayonet through the Skeleton’s armor. His bravery is rewarded by being pushed away, and then decapitated.

Knives looks down, banging on the tank turret. It fires, blasting apart one of the Samurai’s arms and sending him to the ground. The bones are no longer there to form up the arm. The Samurai places the book on the ground, then grabs his nodachi.

“We can’t just sit here!” says Sumire. “We have to help him!”

You blink, looking at him. “He’s letting himself die so we can claim the book.”

“Yeah, but…” She squints.

Knives waves her arm forward, and the rest of the infantry charge forth. This time, they fire their rifles first, blasting holes into the armor, shattering his mask with accurate fire, even blasting his nodachi to pieces. The tank machine guns shoot right through. He kneels down, trying to stay standing.

“Must…” The Skeleton Samurai yells out, shocking the soldiers. Even the tank stops firing. “Defend…” He raises his head. “Japan!” He grabs what’s left of his nodachi and throws it at the nearest soldier, impaling him on it. He grabs a katana from his belt and tries charging once again, leaving the book down. Knives and Tiny drop down from the tank while the Samurai battles it out with the soldiers.

Now’s your chance!

You jump forth and plant your shields down, sitting right on top of the book. Tiny and Knives stop, surprised by your appearance. “Not so fast,” you say. You kick the book up into your arm and keep your shield right over your chest.

Knives grins, holding her arms out. “Lady Liberty, nice to see you again!” She points to the book. “If we could just have that book…” You shake your head. “No?” Tiny pulls out a pair of anti-magical pistols, and Knives as well brandishes a pair of anti-magical knives. “You asked for it! You always ask for it! That’s what I love about you!” She licks her lips lustfully, grinning.

> MAGICAL GIRL BOMBER! <

Lightning and Bomber step up to your side, ready to help you. “You want this book, you can have it when we’re dead.”

“I’d be happy to oblige…” She snaps her finger, and overhead the stealth Zep comes into view, decloaking. The hangar opens up. “Since you brought a ghost out here to fight us, here’s a ghost of our own to fight for us too!” You see a big box drop down in front of you, clouding you in dust and dirt. It opens up, revealing a boxy automaton machine. It stands up on two puny but heavy tree-trunk like legs. One arm is equipped with an autocannon and below that a flamethrower, and the other arm with a hand more like a claw than a hand. On the back was a heavy engine you’d expect to see on a tank, spewing with smoke and fire. And in the center was a small slit, where two glowing blue eyes seem to glare holes in you.

“Wh… what is that?” asks Rana.

It twitches, standing tall over the three of you. It whirs to life, almost like a wounded animal.

Knives grins. “One of the greatest heroes of Germany. Otto von Bismarck!”
