Jessica pauses and takes another sip of her drink.

"You don't remember where we left off, do you?" You ask.
"Not a damn clue" She says. "I've been busy fretting over... well, this. To be honest I'm kind of disappointed by how well it went. I had like... a million different plans in case you tried to betray me"

"Sorry to disappoint you?" You say, unsure of whether or not to apologize for that.
She shrugs. "Better to be disappointed than dead" She says, before her eyes go wide with realization. "Shit! That reminds me!"

Jessica pulls out a device of some sort and taps a few buttons.

"What did you forget now?" You ask.
She bops herself on the head with a lighthearted smile. "I forgot to disarm the charges" She says.

"The charges... you mean like explosives?" You ask.
"Yep. I had this whole place rigged to blow if things went sour" She says.

You blink a few times, and squeeze your eyes shut. "You... you said that way too casually" You say.
"Right, you aren't in the loop" She says. "That is actually pretty normal. Any property or territory belonging to a decent mage is self defended in some way"

"Doesn't that usually mean like... barriers or something?" You ask.
"It can" She says. "But setting up a barrier is like setting up a beacon: everyone is gonna know. Much simpler to rig the whole place to blow sky high if somebody tries to fuck with it"

"Out of curiosity, what would I have had to do to get you to blow this place?" You ask.
"Brought friends and tried to raid the place" She says. "But if I thought you had friends, I wouldn't have set it up here in the first place"

"Ouch Jessica. That hurt my feelings" You say.
"Not friends like that, I meant something more like partners" She says. "Call it a hunch, but you didn't seem like you had many contacts"

"Well, your hunch was right" You say. "What tipped you off?"
"You brought an unenchanted length of low quality chain in as a weapon on the first night" She says. "And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you also can't swim"

"Right again, but it was a bit more obvious that time" You say. "So do explosives get used a lot in your line of work?"

"Of course" She says. "Magical traps can be detected by the right mage, and even if you plan ahead and know what your opponent can and can't detect; they could bring a buddy with keen senses and an old affinity and the whole plan fails"

"So you stick to mundane traps like explosives in the world of... uhh..." You say.
"Mage hunting" She says. "I'll tell you a bit more about that too, if you want. A lot of the tricks in a hunter's arsenal will serve you well in the arena"

"I'd be down for that. Later though" You say. "I didn't understand most of what you just said about senses and affinities, so i think magic theory 101 should come first"

"Right you are" She says. "Let's get that going"

>[1/2]
>>
Jessica takes another sip of her drink. "So it's cool with you if I start from square one?" She asks.
"Fine by me. I haven't really had time to commit anything to memory" You say.

"Do you at least remember what the base affinities were?" She asks.
"Uhh... Time, space, energy, matter, body and mind?" You ask.
"Close" She says. "Energy is split between high and low, with matter sitting in between them"

"What's the difference?" You ask.
"Remember, affinities are ranked by how old they are" She says. "High energies don't require matter, low energies do"

"So a low energy would be something like... heat, or... sssound?" You ask.
"Sound doesn't really count, as it's a bit specific" She says. "But yes, heat, and also gravity"
"Makes sense" You say. "What would the high energies be?"

"Electricity, light, EM stuff" She says. "Complex systems that take a long time to learn"
You nod. "So that makes sense. I guess matter would involve, well... matter" You say. "Solids, liquids and gases"

"Yep" She says. "You've seen "aquamancy" being used before, so it saves me a bit of time having to explain it"

"And pyromancy" You say. "The Traitor uses fire magic"
"Does she now?" Jessica asks. "I'll file that away for later"

I'm not saying Saif should be 100% sure. But to be like, y'know, she's probably the traitor is like, pretty on the money. Especially since Jessica literally just said "I heard there were some teenagers in this thing".

"You said that magic could be sensed, how does that work?" You ask.

"I could explain that, but it would take hours. Also I'm lazy and a little buzzed, so..." She says, holding out her hand.

Her hand begins to glow blue, and it gets brighter and brighter with each passing second.

"Getting anything?" She asks,

You're supposed to be feeling something from this? Just what exactly are you supposed to b-wait. "Kind of" You say.
"Describe it" She says.
"It's like a hum, but it's not in my ears... it's in my head" You say.
"That's pretty much it" She says. "With practice you can strengthen that feeling. Eventually you'll be able to pinpoint directions and distances, and distinguish what magic is being used by the pitch of the humming. There is a catch though... which doesn't even apply to you, so I don't know why I brought it up"

"You mentioned something like that... something about how you could only sense your own affinity and anything 'newer' than it" You say.
"Bingo" She says. "Which is why it doesn't apply to you. As of right now, there are no known affinities older than time. You my friend, could make damn good money as a sensor if you put in the work"

"That's good to know" You say.

"How would I go about training this sense?" You ask.
"Remember that feeling and focus on it" She says. "There are a few pretty sizable barriers in this town. If you focus hard enough you could probably get a feel for them... just don't go tracking them down, at least not until you've done the test"

"Is there another way?" You ask.
"I use magic pretty regularly. Mostly mind stuff to see what people are feeling" She says.
"That isn't y'know... invasive?" You ask.

"You're confusing telepathy with empathy" She says. "Emotions have a weird way of broadcasting themselves, thoughts don't. Using the bare minimum of my magic, I can tell what a person is feeling; it takes a lot more to get actual thoughts, and even more than that to do it undetected"

"Have you been doing that to me? Can you do that to me?" You ask.
"I can, and I have" She says. "How do you think I knew about your thing for Claire, and your thing with Abigail"

You let out a nervous laugh. "It must have been quite the emotional show..." You say.
"It was certainly interesting" She says. "But once I realized what was actually happening, I tuned out. Privacy and all"

"Thanks, I guess..." You say. "Changing the subject, is there anything else I need to know for the test?"

"Just some details, and then you're pretty much good to go" She says. "We get this done tonight, and I can give the Coven a call to set up the test tomorrow. You'll be initiated before the week is through"

"Sweet" You say. "So what's up next?"

>[1/2]
>>
"Off affinities" She says.
"What are those?" You ask.
"Using magic outside of your affinity" She says. "Simple subject, should take like ten seconds"

"How?" You ask.
"You know how you can focus your mana into your arm, and cast a spell to strengthen it that way?" She asks.
"Yeah" You say.
"That's technically body magic" She says. "Body magic is not your affinity, therefor you are using off affinity magic"

"Is that it?" You ask.
"Not quite" She says. "There's a thing about how it'd more difficult to learn off affinities the older they are..."

"Are you going to explain it?" You ask.

"If I have to..." She says, letting out a yawn before continuing. "It's not really on the test, but it could come in handy. Even if it's more advanced than what you can do now... Do you still want to hear it?"

"It's not so bad" You say.
"You're not 30" She says.
"Neither are you" You say.
"I'm 30... 2... and shut up" She says. "Late nights aren't so bad when you're like 14"

"I am not like 14" You say. "I'm 17"
"Until you hit 18 it really doesn't make a difference" She says.
"Then you'll be happy to know that I will be 18 this Wednesday" You say. "Which also reminds me that I need to get Yui a present"

"You two share a birthday? I thought you were adopted siblings" She says.
"We are, but neither of us remember when our actual birthday is" You say. "So we go by the day Boss found us, and our approximate age"

She nods. "I'll have to remember the day then" She says. "Are you throwing a party?"
"Maybe. If it happens, it won't be planned by me. I'm garbage at planning" You say.
"Keep me informed" She says. "I could probably score you guys some booze"

"That is definitely not something you should do. Couldn't that get you fired?" You ask.
"I'm kidding" She says. "Did you really think I'd do that?"

"Well, you keep offering me alcohol" You say.
"Shush" She says. "It was an offer extended as a partner, not a teacher or an adult. And that offer is still on the table, by the way. I'd say you've earned a drink after all this... shit"

"Had I earned it that night in your apartment?" You ask.
"Technically yes" She says. "I just didn't know it yet"
"You're avoiding the question" You say.
"Alright, fine" She says. "I didn't want to drink alone. Do you wanna know what's more depressing than drinking alone?"

"A puppy abandoned on the side of the road in the rain" You say.
"Okay, that... yeah, that tops it" She says.

"But if drinking alone bothers you that much, I guess I'll take you up on that offer" You say.
"Well alright then" She says, standing up and heading over to the bar.

"But I'd just like to point out that this behavior is woefully inappropriate for a teacher" You say.
"Partner" She says. "We're not in school right now, we're in base. And you're almost legal drinking age, right?"

"It's still a year off" You say.
"Really? I thought it was 18 here" She says.
"In Quebec and Alberta, and maybe one of the other provinces" You say.
"Huh" She says. "You're still lucky. back in the States it's 21 across the board"
"I didn't know you were American" You say.
She shrugs. "I've been just about everywhere, so I don't really think of myself as 'from' anywhere"

She comes back with a pair of glasses, both containing an amber liquid with ice cubes suspended in it.

"Cheers" She says, handing you a glass and holding out hers.
"Cheers" You reply, clinking your glass on hers.

Fuck, almost missed the thread.

Remember, we need to tell her what Kyla told us: if she tries to wish her husband back, and he's dead, then he's going to last all of one second before he dies again; she'll have a wasted wish.
>>
>>42388546
Makes you wonder if Kyla is the only god who'll be kind enough to tell you that little detail.

How much did Scholar actually tell her about this?
>>
"Now I'm curious" You say.
"About?" She asks.
"I've basically figured out by now that mine and Yui's memory loss is somehow magic related, but what could do that sort of thing?" You ask. "If a mage can't go in to another mage's head, how would someone wipe another's memories?"

"First of all, it's only hard to get into an awakened mage's head" She says. "You're pretty much free game before then. It used to be common practice among those trading in 'magically equipped' slaves to nab kids who they thought might awaken and get in their heads before they had any defenses"

"It used to be?" You ask. "What changed?"
"The group I used to work with put a lot of time and a lot of effort into ending that trade" She says. "It was my husband's idea"

"Why did your husband want to eliminate slavery?" You ask.
She shrugs and takes another sip, clinking her icecubes around her glass with a sad look before answering. "He never did say... All he ever told me was that it was personal"

"I'm... sorry" You say.
"Don't worry about it" She says. "You asked about magic that could erase memories. To answer your question: yes, there is. Among other things there's a defensive barrier that wipes your head if you try to cross it without permission. It's not active magic, so it works on mage and non-mage alike"

"Why was that the example that came to mind?" You ask.
"Because there's a decent example here in town" She says. "Once you're initiated, I'll swing you by there to take a look"

You nod.

"And before you even ask: no. You are absolutely forbidden from trying to find it on your own" She says. "You are to stay out of trouble. Period. Got it?"

"Got it" You reply
"Good" She says.

"I'm actually kind of curious about your husband" You say. "I remember you saying that we look similar. I don't suppose you have a picture of him around, do you?"

"I do... just give me a second" She says.

Jessica takes another sip, and opens her hand and summons the Scholar's Archive. Then she opens it and pulls a picture out of one of the pages and hands it to you.

"That's the most recent one I've got" She says.
"And you keep it in there?" You ask as you take the photo.

"I've got others. I figured that it'd be a nice pick me up, y'know? Remind me what I'm in this for" She says.

You look at the picture. It's a family photo of a younger Jessica, holding a baby that yo assume is Sarah, next to a man that looks strikingly similar to you. "That is uncanny..." You say.

"Not quite" She says. "His face is different, and he definitely has some more weight to him than you do. He wasn't too much older than you in this pic. I think I would have been 23, so he'd be... 25. Even then, you're right. It is... uncanny"

"Do you think there could be a relation?" You ask, taking your first sip of the drink Jessica poured you. It burns in your mouth and all the way down you throat, causing you to break into a cough. It isn't too bad otherwise.

"Nice" She says. "Maybe I should have gone with something a little softer for you"
You finish coughing before responding. "I'm good" You say.

You take a deep breath, and hand the picture back. Something's been itching you all this time, and you just figured out what: You can't wish back the dead.

Even if Jessica makes it through this to the end, if her husband is dead he isn't coming back.

You take another sip, bracing yourself for what you're about to say. It goes down easier this time, thankfully.

"You do know that you can't bring the dead back with a wish, right?" You ask.
"What?" She asks.

"Kyla told me when she was explaining the rules" You say. "As a general rule, the dead don't come back"

She blinks several times. "What?" She asks.

"I don't think I can make it clearer than that" You say.

"Bullshit" She says. "That..."

Jessica stops and scowls.

"You okay?" You ask.
"I'm going to need to talk to Kyla" She says. "And the Scholar"
"I can call her if you wa-"
"In person, preferably" She says. "Later, when we head back"

"Why later?" You ask.
"Because I think I need to punch something. Finish that, and come with me" She says, downing her drink and making her way off to another area of the warehouse.

"Uhhhh"
"No buts. I still need to see what you're capable of" She says, as she disappears behind a shelving unit. "No holds barred, and no weapons. That includes the sword. If I get stabbed, I'm allowed to shoot. And I don't miss"

That's an interesting shift...

You down the rest of your drink, making some strained faces as it goes down. Then you follow after Jessica...

You walk to the shelf where you lost sight of her, and she's nowhere to be seen.

Come to think of it, you don't remember anything like a sparring area in this place...

The bay door you entered through slams shut, and the lights dim. "So that's the game then..." You say.

You move cautiously, keeping your eyes and ears and, to the best of your ability, your magic senses open. You don't hear or see anything, but you do feel the humming.

If the type can be told by the pitch... then this is definitely higher than before. Does that mean she's using mind magic? Could she be working out your location from it?

The hum deepens, which you take to signify a switch in magic. If higher meant mind, then lower would mean body. If she's using body magic, then she's on the attack.

You enter fast time, just in time to watch Jessica's open hand approach your neck in a chopping motion in slow-motion.

You duck underneath it, and go back to real-time. As her arm passes harmlessly over your head, you lean back and slip a hand behind her shoulder and get your hand to the front of her neck. You lock her outstretched arm with your other hand and fall backwards, in an attempt to bring her down with you.

But all at once she stomps on the back of your knee and pivots on it, slipping her free arm underneath your armpits to yank both of your arms back and freeing her other hand.

"It's cute that you thought that would work out" She says, using her free hand to pinch your cheek and leaning her chin on your shoulder.

You "strengthen" your most easily free arm as you bring it up over her shoulder behind you, and flip her over onto the ground. Before she can scramble up, you're on her with one elbow between her shoulderblades, and the other arm pulling hers back.

"Ow! Damn, okay you got me" She says.
"It's cute that you thought that would work" You say.
"Aww, you think I'm cute?" She asks.

The humming returns.

She hurls you off of her with the arm you thought you had pinned. You enter slow time to lose your momentum, and re-enter realtime to land.

By the time your feet hit the ground, She's on you. You deflect one punch, and respond with a kick to her thigh. She takes it without flinching, and makes her follow-up strike at your throat

The two of you continue to exhcange blows hand-to-hand for what feels like several minutes, before you manage to grab one of her wrists, and she gets yours.

You both pull the other's hand down, standing at close-proximity as you catch your breath.

"You're doing pretty well, considering how much you've had to drink" You say.
"Well, you know" She says. "Once the blood gets running, it all flows away"

She pulls her head back, and slams her forehead into your face. What would probably have broken your nose, ends up bouncing off as you quickly enter slowtime.

She releases your wrist and steps away, and you exit slow time. "Ow! Son of a bitch that hurt" She says.
"That's why I prefer not to use my head as a weapon" You say.

She suck in air through her teeth, and lets loose another string of profanities.

She's left herself pretty open right now. It could be a trap, but if it isn't...

Well, she did say 'no holds barred'...

You step in cautiously and quietly, before quickly putting her in a hold and bringing her to the floor.

With one hand pinning her wrists above her head, and the other keeping extra weight on her dominant arm, you hold her down. You feel her strengthen herself to try and pry you off, but you slow yourself and render her struggling futile.

"Satisfied with my skills?" You ask.
"That wasn't fair" She says.
"You're the one who said no holds barred, anything goes" You say. "I distinctly recall the only rule being that I wasn't allowed to stab you"

She lets out a wistful sigh. "This isn't fair" She says.
"What isn't?" You ask.
"You" She says.

You slip off of her and sit down, as she sits up.

"How am I not fair?" You ask.
"You just aren't" She says. "Do you have any idea how hard it is just to be around you?"

"Is it... because of how I look?" You ask.
"Not just that... you're like him in a lot of ways" She says, placing a hand on your cheek. "But he's gone..."

"He might not b-"
"No... he's gone" She says. "I damn well knew that you can't bring back the dead but... I just... I hoped that he might still be out there somewhere I could wish him back from... and now I'm in this fucking mess, and two of my best friends are gone too... and I..."

She chokes up, brings her knees up to her head and buries her eyes in them.

You pat her back awkwardly. You've never been good around crying people"I hate to say this, but..."

Quit or stay, it's up to you. I'd like your help, but you have a kid to take care of too.

Speaking of Mr. Wizard, did he really tell her ANYTHING about this tourney, besides win=wish+don't die?

Your wish is unattainable and I need a leg up, which I'd get from your book and your resources. Bow out and teach me what I need to win this thing and save the planet earth

You sigh. You really don't want to say this. It took you a week, and this is honestly the last thing you wanted to happen, but... "You should quit" You say.

She slowly turns to you. "What?" She asks.
"Ultimately, it's up to you. But other than me, you have no reason to be in this anymore" You say.

"You're not a good enough reason?" She asks.
"I made it this far" You say. "And I'd rather go it alone than see you die and leave your daughter with no parents at all"

"And if you die? What will I do then?" She asks.
"I won't" You say.
"What if you do though?" She asks. "I get to sit pretty on this side with nothing but the fact that I could have helped you to comfort me"

"It's better than the alternative" You say.
"What will you do without me then?" She asks. "The Spy and the Gambler's team are going to be gunning for you"
"I think I'll approach the Smith's team. I've got a hunch about them" You say.

"You're being ridiculous" She says.
"I'm really not" You say.

"Yes. You are" She says, standing up and walking away.

You stand and block her path, grabbing her shoulders and giving her a light shake. "Jessica" You say, as you grab her chin and turn her head towards you. "I'm not worth what you would lose"

She blinks several times.

"You can help me by giving me the Archive, and teaching me about this crazy god damn mage world" You say. "But I won't see you go back into the arena just for my sake"

She stares into your eyes intensely, like she would somehow find the answer she's looking for in there...

>[1/2]
>>
"You're an idiot" She says.
You loll your head back in exasperation. "I already tol-"

She turns your head back to face her with a gentle hand placed on your cheek, as her other hand slides around your waist.

"And for the record: you would be worth it" She says.
"Bu-"

She moves in and cuts you off with a kiss on the lips, pulling you closer to her as she slips her tongue into your mouth.

For a few seconds you think you should stop this, she IS drunk after all.

But then your pathways connect.

You feel something going between you, like a transfer of some sort. You also feel a bit of what she feels: sadness. Seeing someone so much like her love every single day burns her inside. And longing. And love. And need.

These things bounce around in your head and you catch her need for affection, returning it twofold. You wrap her tightly in your arms and push your lips harder into hers.

In your pocket, ignored, your phone signals her surrender.

You may no longer have an ally, but you most certainly have a friend...

Or whatever the hell you call this...

Great thread, as always!

I'm fascinated to see just how many alliances/surrenders can be brought about by the raw power of the Saif D [spoilers]gender be damned[/spoilers]
>>
>>42391497
Wouldn't Kayla be able to tell Jessica what happened to her husband seeing as the ban on what she says doesn't apply to other people?

Sorry to disappoint but Saif is definitely straight

I get that, simply saying that the men would be in awe of his D.

They can look, but no touching.

I doubt the effectiveness of that strategy

Only if Jessica asks her specifically, and it has to be her idea, not yours.
