o everyone that up voted the archive, thanks a bunch. I know my writing is the best, but seeing that people enjoy it really helps.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program.

Welcome to Neolithic Pokemon Quest, Episode 2. Episode 1, New Friends in New Lands, can be found at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/42308852/

For all the new people, here's a quick summery. We are playing Cain, a 17 year old hunter gatherer. A massive fire separated him from his family and tribe, leaving him alone in the world. Armed only with a flint spear, a damaged pokedez, and his wits, Cain ventured north, stopping to rest high in the Dragonback mountains. It is here that Cain met a Swinib, and befriended the small Pokemon. Together, they managed to defeat a newly hatched Beedrill. We ended with Cain beginning another page for the pokedex, to replace the destroyed ones. At the moment, there is a total of 47 pages, with a range of information. With time, the pokedex will fill out and help you in your journey.

The fire crackles merrily, bits of sap bursting through the bark from the heat. Your future meal, a freshly dressed Beedrill, sits to the side. The cocoon it emerged from sits next to it, still hard and close to intact. You place the meat of the Pokemon into the chrysalis, then seal it close with a strip of braided wing. You spread the embers of the fire out around the hole, then place the chrysalis inside the primitive oven. The embers are piled back on top of the meal, to provide an even temperature.

You spend an hour readying the campsite, laying pine boughs down into a bed, with rocks piled on one side to reflect the heat of the fire back to you. A small amount of rocks are placed in the fire, to be removed throughout the night, and placed in the bedding. Swinub tries to help you, pushing small rocks toward the fire with his snout. He's not willing to get to close to the flames, but his help is appreciated. The small boar pulls apart a number of branches, striping the needles into a pile atop your bed. Periodically, Swinub will lay down in the mount, crushing it into a nest.

Once your campsite is ready for the night, you pull the Beedrill from the flames. A sharp tap on the shell pops it open, revealing the steaming contents. The insect flesh floats in a pool of berry juices, Bidoof fat, and various plants you found around the woods. Using freshly whittled chopsticks, you dig into the meal. The Beedrill has an oddly nutty flavor, a cross between peanuts and walnuts. Without the fat from the Bidoof, it would be dry, but with it, the meat drips. The sweet berry juices soak into the Pokemon, blending together into a heady mix of sweet and salty. Using the chrysalis as a cup, you drink down the broth. Swinub gets a few choice bits of meat, along with the carapace. He seems to love it, gnawing at the hard insect shell.

Will do, we'll save it for the end of the thread

You lay in your bed of branches, pushing a few to the side so they don't poke you in the back.

Swinub steps into his nest, circles it, then curls into a ball. The furry Pokemon lies pressed against your side, warmth radiating outwards. Somehow, having another being with you makes the world seem just a bit brighter. There's hope now.

You're back at the Endless forest, the lush green vegetation shining in the starlight. You remember this spot well, your tribe stopped here about once a month. The trees were held back by some act of nature, leaving room for ferns to form a perfect carpet. Often, tribes meet here to trade, intermingle and (something you learned just a few years ago) hook up.

You blink, and instantly, the world is aflame. Chattering echoes around the clearing, demonic laughter completely unknown to you. A hunched figure, his skull wreathed in flame, stands out as a well of night in the flickering red backdrop.

Fear shoots up your spine, freezing you in place. The air around you boils, each breath like sucking air through a reed. Your head swims, the world a blurring collage of reds, orange, and black.

The monster in the flames leaps between the trees, never entering the clearing. Golden flame streaks behind it, and each time the monster jumps, the tree collapses. Burning logs topple into the clearing, massive clouds of ash rising while the earth. The ungodly laughter never ceases, growing in strength with each fallen tree.

You attempt to escape the flames, the laughter, the being of darkness. You know this land, it feels of home. Of home aflame now, stinking of the ethereal intruder.

Diving through the flames, you attempt to find a place hidden away from the fire. The ferns, so soft and concealing in your memory, wither before you, their energy stolen. Brown husks are left, which smolder and crack under the lightest pressure. You pull the smoking plants over your body, hissing slightly as burns form along your skin.

The laughter draws closer, the being's footsteps almost too light to hear. The sound cuts off suddenly, leaving only the crackling of the burning forest and your own shallow breaths. You shut your eyes, trying to remain perfectly silent. The monster, almost undetectable, steps slowly over your hiding spot. It's nostrils draw in two massive quantities of air, audible even through the background noise.

The monster circles your hiding spot, drinking in the smells of the burning forest. It draws in more and more air, yet never seems to exhale. The air just disappears, consumed by the monster

The monster roars in anger, releasing a jet of flame into the sky. It falls to all fours, landing heavily on its fists. The being draws in air, the massive column of flame taxing it.

It's weak now. Tired. You've hunted monsters before, beings able to kill with a fraction of their power. The key is to attack when they're tired.

You burst from your hiding place, charging at the monster. It turns to face you, providing the first solid view of it. The body is humanoid, but hunched and bearing a long, thin tail. Flames pour from its shoulders and atop its head, the air around it shimmering with heat. A muzzled skull floats in the fire, sharp canines bared. Eyes made of darkness stare out at you, spotted with bits of white fire.

You punch at the monster that has terrorized you for days, always hidden with the flaming trees. A sudden wave of cold washes over your body, a welcome relief from the burning heat. In the instant before you connect with the monster, you glance over your body.

Plates of blue ice cover your body, shifting perfectly in tune with the muscles they protect. Your hand and forearm is a solid icicle, coming to a jagged point. Flakes of stone are suspended in the ice, lending you their protection. A small ball of ice and stone is positioned perfectly over your heart.

The icicle stabs into the monster's chest, steam rising as the ice and flame do battle. You draw back your hand, now dripping water, covered in a thin glove of ice.

You draw your hand back, the icicle beginning to reform around your hand. You stab the other arm into the monster's side, eliciting a roar. A hand swats you to the side, and you skip across the clearing.

Liquid flame grows around the monster's frame, armoring it in a red fasimile of yours. The monster rears up to its full height, towering above you. Magma drips from its body with every movement, smoking as it burns the dirt it lands on. The skull disappears in the molten rock, replaced by a wide face. A skin of grey rock forms, then cracks across its body, constantly renewing itself. The monster's laughter returns, booming from a stone chest.

Your armor struggles in the heat, barely maintaining its form. A spear materializes in your hands, a stone haft with a foot long blade of ice and stone chips. Holding the weapons with both hands, you charge at the waiting monster.

The monster forms a weapons, the likes of which you've never seen. It's shaped much like a spear, yet he holds it only at one end. It's much shorter as well, only four feet. Regardless of its strange choice of weapons, you stab out at the monster. The tip of your spear is knocked offline, hitting only air.

A line of heat cuts into your stomach, the monster's weapon melting through your frozen armor. The spear drops from your hands, melting as it falls. The ice around you dissolves, the heat too intense.

Dream over!

You bolt awake with a scream, fumbling for the wound. Nothing mars your skin, the line of fire already fading. Swinub hops onto your lap, pushing his snout up against your "wound". Ignoring the dying heat, you scratch behind his ear. No reason to worry him with your bad dream.

Shaking off the dream, you note that the sun has already risen. You quickly stoke the dying embers of last nights fire, with only a moment of fumbling.

You feed Swinub one of your last berries, and eat the last of your pemmican. It's a bit dry, and with little snow near by, you don't have much to drink. You'll have to find a stream or pond soon, or risk dehydration. You're also out of food, which is very worrying in this climate.

Very, and I doubt controlling one would be possible in a setting without pokeballs.
>>
Water is the most valuable resource you can get at the moment, so you decide to go off in search of it. Besides, you can throw a line into the water and possibly get some food.

Packing your bag and stomping out your fire, you set off. Swinub walks at your side, his short legs working overtime to keep up. Ultimately, you decide that it would just be easier for him to ride in your pack. The boar Pokemon squels with joy as you run, his forelegs braced against your shoulder.

You follow a path up the mountain, leaping over rocks with the help of your spear. At the base of a small tumble of rocks, you strike gold. Liquid, clear, nonpoisonous, gold. A small waterfall has cut its way through the stone, and tumbles into a pond below. A ring of pine trees serve as a seat, the sappy branches perfectly shaped for sitting. Feeling the side of the tree, you notice that a number of branches have been cut away. The remaining branches are set so that a person can easily climb up or down.

Pulling a piece of cord made of Beedrill tendon and wing from your pocket, you set up your spear for fishing. Swinub managed to find a Caterpie along the way, and you take a piece to act as bait. You flick the hook into the water, and sit back against a tree. Fishing a piece of hide from your pack, you start sketching Swinub. You've been meaning to add a page for him, and document anything you learn about his species.

Can we not say things like "Swinub use [attack move]!" It sounds super mechanical and unrealistic in this prehistoric era with magical animals.
Maybe a bit more of "charge it from the side," "tackle it while it's not paying attention."

Slowpoke...

What was it that Cameron showed you? They don't respond if you cut off their tails! That's it. Justin's name day, you went hunting and killed a Slowpoke. Justin was able to trade the tail for a ring of some strange stone worked into a ring.

You rip the spear to the right, the hook pulling out of the Pokemon's lip. The Slowpoke starts chewing slowly, yet to realize that it was hurt. You step around the side of Pokemon, dragging your hand along the thick pink skin. The Pokemon looks over at you with one of its large, glazed over eye.

You chop down with the pokemon's tail, slicing through the soft muscle and between the bone. The stump doesn't bleed, and you scratch the pokemon's neck before guiding it into the water. The Pokemon wades into the water, a small spurt of blood shooting from stump after a minute.
>+1 Slowpoke Tail!

"Hey kid, what are you doing? Don't you know Slowpoke are some of the most useful Pokemon? If you're not going to take it, I will." Someone dressed in green and brown shouts from the trees. A short spear shoots through the air, stabbing into the back of the slowpoke. It's head rises from the water, ears spinning to listen to you.

Passing knowledge. You know they are docile, and that their tails are worth a lot in barter.

This guy "farms" them, much like how native Americans would kill bison enough that they were very knowledgable about them and their habits.

You lean your spear against the tree, then look over to the man. He's crouched on top of one of the branches, holding an atlatl and three more darts. A cream colored tunic is almost hidden by his cloak, which is held in place by a bone pin.

"who in the name of Celebi are you?" You shout, drawing the slowly moving attention of the slowpoke. You now have ten minutes to run. "Besides, won't it heal?"

"ITS THE PRINCIPAL OF THINGS! The pain lasts for months, even after they heal." Shit, well now you kinda feel bad. "Besides, it the chance of catching one is astronomically low. And you were just going to let it go? Kids these days, no respect. Why, I had to walk up hill both ways to get water for my family. Now we have fancy 'buckets'." As he talks, the man launches three more darts into the slowpoke. Out of darts, he pulls a flint knife.
>write in dialogue/actions

>>42339017
Yeah, but they are insanely rare. Not only do you need a fully evolved Pokemon, it has to have a mega, AND you need to be rich enough to get a mega stone. The only reason he could get one was because the trader thought it was just some weird rock. Also, Pokemon can't evolve. Electribuzz, for example.

"Shit, sorry. Uh, do your thing man." You shout over, then watch as he wades into the water. The old hunter pulls a piece of compressed berries from his belt, and holds it out for the slowpoke to see. With plodding slowness, they back out of the water and onto the shoreline.

"Why are you even up here, young man? It's not often we get visitors at the Dragonback mountains" the man pulls a thick fire hardened wooden stake from his belt, along with a mallet.

"I got separated from my tribe in the Endless Forest. There was a giant fire, and I couldn't find them. I figured that they might have gone north to escape the flames." The man looks at you blankly. "I guess I was wrong."

"Well son, we haven't had anyone come up here, 'side's yourself. You're welcome to stay with us for as long as ya need. I'm sure you'll be a hit at the tavern, growing up in the Endless Forest an' all. Be it true that there be Pokemon with many heads?"

You help the man(who you learn is named Cato) butcher the slowpoke, a skill that translates from Raticates to giant pink Pokemon. Laden down with almost a hundred pounds of meat, you follow Cato up a steep wooded path. Marvelously, they have shaped the mountain to provide them with all the food they need. Stones are piled on terraces to form pens, which hold numbers of Mareep almost fantastical. Berry and Apricorn bushes are worked into fences, so that any passerby could eat as needed. They have long, thin stretches of single plants, growing in perfect lines.

Cato leads the way through the village, waving to a few of the village's inhabitants. They all share the same fair complexion, and hair the color of flames. Cato opens a hatch to a large house, easily three times the size of family tents. A pair of what you assume are grandchildren greet him, swarming around you after hugging their grandfather. Cato wasn't kidding when he said they didn't get many visitors. The children, 7 and 9, get shooed out of the way by Cato. Dropping the meat next to a stone and clay oven, Cato sits across from you at a table.

"Now Cain, you mentioned that you got separated. What're you planning to do?"

I don't have class tomorrow, but I still need to do some studying. I can go for another 4 hours if there's enough people

Well, you hadn't thought of that. For the past weeks, the only thing on your mind was survival. The dreams were getting worse each night, leaving you more ragged than the day before. Last night was the first where you weren't running for your life.

"I guess, I want to find my tribe. I need to know if they're okay," Cato nods silently, pulling at his beard. It wasn't until now that you noticed the many colors in it. Stone grey forms the brunt of it, but veins of red, orange, and yellow run through it. It reminds you somewhat of the last dying embers of a fire, stubbornly fighting against the winds of time. "My father gave me a book of Pokemon before Darkrai took him" Cato joins you in making the mark of Cresselia, to ward off His eye. "It was damaged when I escaped the flames. I'd like to try and repair it."

"You have it on you, I assume?" Cato asks. You open the book's case, drawing it out with care. Cato handles it with almost religious reverence, slowly opening it to one of the pages. It's the Caterpie page, along with the new page you added for Beedrill. "Amazing work. And you can understand these?" You nod, and a smile crosses his face, "Good. Perhaps you would like to meet Rosalia? She has one much like this, though not of such great quality and quantity. No doubt she would be happy to see...your book"

I don't think we can't catch an arcananine but a growlithe yeh then simply train it up into an arcanine. Growlithe should act pretty much like a wild dog. Touchy and suspicious at first but friendly and loyal once it knows you.

"Thank you. We lost much knowledge in the fire, and my tribe would gain much happiness if I were to return with more than I lost."

"Good. I shall arrange a meeting. It is lucky you arrived on the eve of the solstice. She is often gone for weeks at a time, following Pokemon. Her wanderlust seems to run in the family, her brother before her left, and is yet to return." Cato stands, then walks to the small cooking area. It's hard packed earth, with shelves at waist level of raw wood to hold instruments. A small fire burns in a stone box, open on one side. The top of the firebox is made of thin stone, held aloft by arches of fired clay and smaller stone.

Cato cuts thin slices of slowpoke steaks on the stone, the fatty meat sizzling instantly. A godly aroma fills the building, drawing its inhabitants out of the woodwork. Cato's grandchildren receive the first strips of the meat, eating them straight off the fire. The eldest feeds a portion of his to a Eevee that clings to his side, it's fur sleek and soft. One day, given time, it should evolve into a Leafeon. You comment on this to him, only to get a cocked head and questions on what Leafeons are. Have these people never raised an Eevee before?

The night passes quickly, the entire Chesian clan talking with you like old friends. Despite the age differences(7,9,23,24, and 58), all of the clan seems interested in your pokedex. With the great book placed on top of a table, you describe life in the Endless forest. Descriptions lush green plants, so familiar to you, draw many questions from the young children. Many Pokemon, including many bug types, are completely alien. Yamna, a common food in the Endless forest, is apparently unknown. In the same manner, Cato and his son, Markus, talk of beings shaped like massive Tropius', but lacking in all leaves. Markus talks with pride to have helped defeat one, forcing one the size of a house of the side of a cliff. He even pulls a cloak from an chest, made of a shimmering blue leather. It sparkles like water, the color shifting like that of the northern lights.

Finally, the clan retires to their bedrolls. You place your pack against a wall of the firebox, a prime location with plenty of heat. Cato's family is spread across the space in front of the box, heat pouring from the embers onto the family. Arceus, when was the last time you slept like that? At least three years, the day of your induction to the hunters. What would your life had been, had the tribe not been in constant movement?

You wake with the family, and break your fast with yet more of the slowpoke meat, alongside some kind of steaming grains and a side of berries mixed together. The children talk excitedly through the meal, barely able to remain in place. Once released, they charge to a set of cubbies against the wall. The pair dresses in less than a minute, bouncing around in complex suits of red fabric, sky blue beads, and braids of white and fresh green cord.

The rest of the clan dresses at a much more sedate pace, donning clothing in the same style as the children. Cato's includes a heavy cape of fur, though the rest of the family's clothing doesn't match it. All of the clothing has an airy, light appearance, much like what you wore in the Endless Forest.

"Here lad, put this on." Cato hands you a thin vest of muted orange fabric, three green cords holding it closed at the bottom. You slip off your normal tunic, and tie the vest in place. "Now, the festival will begin with a short ceremony. After it is finished, the village is going to be celebrating the solstice. Just remember to have fun, and don't burn the village down. I'm still getting it for that."

>>42344138
You follow Cato's family out of the building, and join a stream of people dressed similarly. From each house, comes one man wearing a thick cloak of furs. All of these men bunch together in the street, a brown rock within a roaring fire.

The stream of people comes to a halt in the middle of the village, where a low eight sided stage has been built. A stone pillar rises from the ground, through the stage, and ends it ring of bowls encircling of the pillar. The men in cloaks, possibly the eldest in each clan, mount the stage. You stand silently near the back of the crowd, watching the motionless men on the stage.

After close to ten minutes, something happens. A murmur pulsates through the crowd, starting in the front and working its way back. You catch a few snippets of talk, though none of it makes any sense. They talk of the dragon within the mountain, frozen on all days but this.

Water shoots from the pillar, arcing gracefully to land in the eight bowls. It continues to flow, spilling out of the bowls and onto the stage. The eight men onstage take hold of the stone bowls, and lift them from the pillar. With a unified cry, they throw the water into the waiting crowd.

The cloaks drop to the stage, piling around the pillar. The men, Cato included, place the bowls back on their holders. Once this is completed, the crowd bursts into lilting cries of joy. A wave of children swarm the stage, pushing and shoving to get close to the water. Laughter and shrieks of joy emanates from the laughing children, and the crowd's cheers redouble.

>>

>Kyurem
huh, that so but I didn't think OP would let us find out about a legendary so soon?
>>
The celebration begins, with the stage being quickly disassembled. A depression surrounding the pillar slowly fills with water, knee deep, and then fills with people. Large clay jugsare carried out from houses, and a array of mugs, cups, and bowls placed on tables next to them.

The crowd cycles through the water, and the press of bodies pushes you into it as well. Amazingly, the water is warm, as if it were heated by the sun. In this land of ice and snow, it serves of a reminder of the love of Ho-oh.

You follow the crowd to the jugs, and take a small bowl of the purple liquid at the urging of some of the people nearby. Many seem happy to meet a new person, demanding that you share a quick drink. The sips you take of the purple liquid, which both invigorates and intoxicates, slowly add up. Something tells you that nine months from now, this small village of fire haired people is going to see a very sudden boom in population.

The day wears on, drinking and telling tales of your life burning through the hours. As the sun sets, the water stops flowing from the pillar. With the fall of the water, so too does the party die down. You manage to sober up a bit, and Cato finds you within the crowd. He steers you to a new table, which has a number of berries set on platters. Along with a number of the other village people, you dine on the fruits of the Chesto bush.

"Now lad, remember how I said I'd set up a meeting 'tween you and Rosalia? Good. I grabbed your book for you, you're due at her house in four minutes. Have fun together." Cato points you down the street, then hands you the pokedex.

Actually, yeah. Imagine how many cave pictures of dongs and tits and carvings of fertile womenfolk have been found. That's likely only a fraction of all there ever was.

I bet there's more than one weird folk tale in this setting about how "if you conceive a child in x pokemon's shadow, it will have some of it's strength."

Yeah boi, get some.

Also, absolutely dandy quest so far Hickory.
>>
>>42345206
I was playing with a couple of quest ideas, before I settled on this one. I honestly have no idea where the idea for this setting came from. It could have been the recent magic materials thread, which had a number of cool materials that didn't need smithing.

Most likely, the idea for it just appeared. I loved pokemon(still do), and loved the old pulp cavemen movies. Somewhere in my head, the two mixed together. I'm surprised more people haven't done it before.

>>42345261
Cato is based on one of my friend's father. Getting into the character's backstory would be pretty fun, though it has no bearing on the quest.
>>
>>42345353
I'd totally be cool hearing about it, unless by "no bearing" you mean "might become a spoiler depending on what the players do"
>>
>>42345353
This setting really is awesome, never be ashamed to love Pokemon, it is a great franchise.

I really wanna see what other tribes are out there, these guys are pretty benevolent, I wanna see the dicklords.
>>
>>42345391
Nah, it's pretty much just talking about his life before Cain. If you never learn about him, it wouldn't effect the story.

>>42345395
I'm happy people like it. I feel like world building is something I'm better at, but my dialogue suffers. Something I'm hoping to work on in this quest, so force characters to interact. I'm also trying to give non speaking characters, like Dire, personality.

Don't worry, you'll meet them. I just figured it would be best not to send the dicks at you right away.

you already met them in the first thread

Your dialog is fine so far, but it seems like your avoiding standard dialog for more narrative. Not necessarily bad, just something to point out.

Well, there are some copper weapons floating around. I really like the idea that it's bugs embedded in the sword, so that might be your chance to get one. That kinda leaves it open to the idea of honedge spears and other weapons.

The monster in your dream was wielding a sword, which is becoming more common in the cities as copper becomes more common. At the moment, copper weapons are still reserved for great fighters or the wealthy.
