“Watch it!”

The Raptor charged out at you, teeth gleaming in visible sharpness. You repaid him with your shield smashing his face in, then slamming him full-tilt into a tree. The overgrown lizard went limp and slid down. And you had to watch as Lightning ducked a lunge from another Raptor, and then sliced its leg off with a swipe of her blade. Then she ended it with another swipe down, decapitating the creature.

And as for the third Raptor, he immediately bolted, croaking and calling out for help. Bomber pulled up her guns, and then gave a quick burst from her dual Thompsons. The Raptor fell over head over heels, dead.

“Well.” Lightning walked over to you, frowning a bit. “That was easy. Why were we afraid of being caught again?” She pokes you in the chest. “That wound catching up with you?”

You slap her hand down. “I’m being CAREFUL,” you say with the most upmost emphasis. “We can’t just pick a fight with every Jap and his bucktooth mother. No offense.”

“None taken.”

“Regardless.” You place your hands on your hips, your shields shrinking down to bucklers, easier to carry, easier to handle. “We have to be surgical about this. No more loudly bashing our way through things, no more random explosions or anything like that. We have to be secret!” You loudly whisper the word – Secret – Just to further emphasize the point. “Got that?”

Lightning quirks her brow. “Since when did you get so boring?”

“Well, I have to agree,” says Bomber as she pulls her Thompsons back into her skirt. “How would the Chinese look if we fought all their battles for them?”

“We’re not here to fight for the Chinese,” you say. “We’re here for the Atlas. Now let’s go, before the Japs find us again.” The three of you start moving through the forests. Your first objective for now is to make contact with the local resistance. Considering this is China and one of the great rules is to never wage a land war with China, there has to be – someone – fighting the good fight. And indeed they are. You hear stories of the Chinese braving the Japanese tanks, fighting a guerilla war in the shadows against the armies.

Problem is, half of them are communists. You really hope any rebels you find are good democracy loving Chinamen.

You three duck down when you hear the familiar rumbling and grinding of wood, branches, and timber. Tanks. You look to see a small grouping of tanks lumbering their way through the woods, escorted by a small squad of Japanese infantry. They sweep the forest, keeping a close eye on practically everything.

Bomber squeaks a little, smiling beneath that thick scarf of hers. “The Type 89 Chi-Ro!”

Lightning smirks, nudging you. “Hey, watch this.” She stands up, and you quickly pull her back down. “Aw, come on!”

“We’re not here for a fight,” you say.

“They got paper for armor anyway,” she mumbles.

“Why are they deploying tanks though to follow us?” asks Bomber. “Shouldn’t they know we’re just a bunch of… little girls?” Actually, it did seem strange to deploy tanks (for a matter of speaking, tanks) to hunt down a trio of girls. Maybe the Japanese knew something you didn’t, either about the area or about you. That’s actually a smart observation by Bomber.

Lightning sighed. “So, what, are we going to fight or not?” She holds up her hands, giving you a guiltless expression. “It’s your money you’re blowing.”

“No, it’s #5’s…” you mutter.

“We’ll let them pass,” you say. You press down on Lightning’s head and push her further into the ground. “That means you, Lighty.”

“No fun,” she whines, crossing her arms and pouting.

“Hey, think of it as us paying you to laze around, don’t you like that?” She grumbles quietly. You’ve never seen anybody get so worked about getting paid to work. You shake your head as the tanks thunder on by while the three of you hide in the bushes.

-

-

The three of you have dressed down back to casual outfitting, carrying your backpacks and hiking through the forest road like a trio of travelers fresh off the boat. You and Rana are wearing hoods as well to conceal yourself, but as for Sumire… “Sumire, don’t you think you oughta wear like a hat or something?”

She’s wearing a Japanese sailor uniform with nylons on her legs, and wearing a thickcoat that while it has a hood, she does nothing to really conceal her Japanese-ness. In China. “Hey, you pay me to fight, not to be sneaky,” she says.

You’re kind of wishing #5 had sent you alone now.

The three of you stop on the road when you come upon a little village. Several wood houses, a few people out and about minding their own business. You quickly step in front of Sumire and lead the pack on in. A few people give you some quick glances, but they turn into harsh glares when they see Sumire amongst you. Rana leans over to her. “Sumire, put your hood on, people here think you’re going to hex them or something.”

She dismisses Rana, huffing. “Relax, they’re just Chinese people, what are they gonna do?”

A Chinese man steps onto the road, backed up by five more, armed with rifles. He shouts at you in Chinese, towering over the three of you. You’re not scared of course, you’ve seen scarier, but Sumire is really risking things. “Sumire, please explain things. I think we found our rebels,” you say.

She sighs, then pushes you aside and starts speaking to the Chinaman. He blinks in surprise when he sees that Sumire speaks the language, and then further pays attention when Sumire explains the situation. The weird language the two are speaking seems not that dissimilar from Japanese, and yet…

You don’t understand a darn word they’re saying!

Finally, Sumire stops. “Right, Libby. This is Chong. Chong, Libby.” She motions to him, then to you. “Chong here’s the leader of a local militia fighting against the Japanese. I made him aware that we need some help.”

You nod. “Tell him we need a radio, a truck, and a map.”

Sumire nods, translating. Chong shakes his head. Oh boy. “… Chong says he’s not going to give us any help unless we help him.”

You narrow your eyes. “What did you tell him about us?”

“I told him we were working for… some big people,” says Sumire. “I mean come on!” You cross your arms sternly, glaring at Sumire. Rana shrinks a bit, stepping out of the way like a good child amongst a fighting married couple. “Is he really going to believe that a Japanese schoolgirl is traveling with her two bestest friends from across the ocean on the vacation of a lifetime in – war-torn China!?”

You sigh. “What does he want?”

“He wants us to help him sabotage a local Japanese garrison in the area. They’re the ones with some dinosaurs.” Chong adds something, looking a little frightened. “A big one too. If we help him, he helps us.” He also reaches points to a building, with a high tower right next to it. “He says that’s where they keep the radio in case you want to contact someone.”

You nod. “Alright. Fine. But he better keep his end of the bargain, I don’t want to waste any more time than we already have.” You nudge Sumire. “By the way, don’t just go around telling everyone we’re spies, Sumire. We actually have to keep a low-profile. Not just for us but for these people too.”

Sumire crosses her arms, rolling her eyes. “That’s extra.”

“Everything’s extra,” you mutter. You look up at Chong. “Alright.” He looks down at you. You never thought they stacked Chinamen that high. You suppose a guy like him needs to be strong to face an army like the Japs. “Alright… where are we headed?”

Chong turns around, then points to a town upon a hill poking out of the forest. Sumire says, “He’s saying that that’s the local town that governs the province here. Japanese operate out of it, they just moved in two days ago. They’ve launching coordinated attacks out of it. They want it cut off from the main body of the army so that the rest of the rebels can move in and wipe it out, or they want it wiped out completely.”

You nod. “Okay.” You rub your hands together. “We’ll move with the cover of night.”

-

-

After a hearty meal and being shoved into a basement to keep you hidden from any prying eyes, you journey out with Chong, a large posse of his men, and your girls as well. Rana and Sumire keep behind you and Chong as you move through the bushes.

The town itself was set upon a plateau, with sharp drops on either side of it, with only one noticeable way in guarded by tanks. You kept around to the flanks, and thankfully the Japs seem to have neglected to bring searchlights with them to keep watch over their camp. The town itself though was well-protected on all sides by high walls twice a man’s size. Moving into that gate would not be easy.

You did hear however screams, shots fired, and shouting from inside the town.

Rana asks, “What’s happening in there?”

Chong growls, muttering something in Chinese. Sumire translates it as, “It’s the Japanese. They’re slaughtering the villagers.”

“Not for long they aren’t,” says Rana.

Chong signals you all to stop, then motions one of his men to come up. Over his shoulder is a huge bundle of rope with a grappling hook. He flings it upwards to one of the town walls, and it sticks. Chong motions you to climb. “Alright.” You look over at Rana, who is blushing intensely. “Rana, what’s wrong.”

“They want us to go first?” she asks. You nod. “I-… I mean…” She looks at all of them, staring at her confusedly. She leans towards you. “I’m wearing a skirt, Christine.”

You stare upwards. Of all the things.

You sigh. “Get up there. Sumire, tell them to look away.” Sumire quirks her brow, incredulous. “Now.” After a quick command from Sumire, Chong and his men all look away. Rana quickly climbs up the rope, then hops over the wall. You follow up, then so does Sumire. The three of you quickly hop off the wall and into a backalley street, where you see torches and lit fires amongst the streets of the town.

“Get down!” You push Rana and Sumire back into the alley, then poke your head out to see Dinosaurs in tight bindings, being carted down the street. You also hear more executions taking place, women screaming, children crying. Terrible.

> Sabotage communications, let the rebels handle the rest.

You point down the street. “Right. You two will create a diversion. I’ll take out the radio and signal for the rebels. We need the gate clear of the tanks and any meat-eating dinos, alright?” They both nod, agreeing. “Good, good. Let’s get this started.” You both stand up, and transform in the darkness, briefly lighting up the alley.

>> MAGICAL GIRL LIBERTY! <<

You loosen up your arms, whirling them around as Bomber and Lightning duck into another alley. Alright, show time. You start towards the radio tower at one corner of the town. It’s built into one of the watchtowers on the wall, not hard to miss. And certainly the rebels will know the signal when you give it.

-

-

You bust down the simple wooden door, surprising the lone radio tech. He looks at you with wide eyes of fear, gripping his seat. You spin up your shields, smirking. “Boo.” He yelps, running for the open window and jumping. That’s not exactly a one-story drop, but you suppose he got desperate. You move on over to the radio equipment. A lot of expensive equipment here, be a shame if something were to happen to it.

Like you grabbing it and smashing it into the ground. It whirs and sparks as you toss and kick the metal innards in. With that done, you move onto the window, then jump up onto the roof. The radio tower is held up by some support struts, connecting to the top via four cables.

Not anymore. You snap them off, letting them whip off. The radio tower creaks and groans as it falls over and down into the forest, tearing itself to pieces and even taking part of the watchtower with it. You look over at the town itself, and find a huge contigent of Japanese troopers moving on your position. Great, you did give yourself the tough job after all. You narrow your eyes to the gate, to see Bomber and Lightning already make short work of the heavy defenses.

Right. Time for the signal!

You hear a roar of a rocket engine behind you, and you quickly turn around to see a girl drop down. She draws a revolver in one hand and a Mauser broomhandle pistol in another and points them directly at you. She is… very tiny actually. Under the warm light of the fires, you have to guess she was a kraut, with that glittering blonde hair of hers and those warm eyes too. You have to ask though: “Who-“

Suddenly your shoulder is shot right through. She just shot you! “Ow! Dang it!” you scream. You spin up your shields and rush at her, and she quickly jumps back, then jumps up and roars into flight with her rocketpack. She fires a couple of more shots from her big revolver and her little broomhandle. They all ding off your shield, but that first shot really pelted you.

You keep up one shield, then spin up the other. In one quick motion, you toss it right at her. She boosts up, avoiding it. She spins around, and then ducks down to avoid it coming back at her. Damn, she’s quick, she’s smart too! She turns around, pockets the pistols, then draws a massive assault rifle off her back and starts pelting you with bullets.

Nuts to this! You pull out the flare gun on your belt, then quickly fire off a shot. You and her look up at the sparkling shot in the sky, then hear the war cry of rebels as they rush the gate and the Japanese defenses. Shots are traded between both sides as rebels surprise the Japs, rushing them down into close melee range. They climb over the walls, they rush through the gate, rebels are coming through everywhere! Where did they all come from!?

Tiny looks down at you, then immediately blasts off, in full retreat. You throw your shield, but too little too late. She escapes its range, and becomes nothing more than a dot in the distance.

Who the hell was that?

The bodies are gathered up, the wounded are tended to, and the civilians are evacuated to a safer place as you meet with Chong and your girls. “What happened!?” asks Sumire as she sees your bleeding shoulder.

“I got shot,” you say. “Some… rocketeer got the jump on me, got away before I could get her.” Chong blinks, narrowing his eyes at the mention of “Rocketeer”. “Do you know her?” you ask.

Chong nods, speaking to Sumire. She says, “His men have been telling stories of a flying girl, who attacks from the sky. Apparently she’s working with the Japanese in rooting out uh… girls like us.” A magical girl huntress? In China? “Might be Magisch Korps.”

“No, no. If she were a Magical Girl, she would’ve given me more than guns,” you theorize. “And she definitely wouldn’t need to rely on a rocketpack either. There’s more to that tiny little girl than we realize.”

“She was tiny?” asks Rana. “How tiny?”

“Tiny,” you say. “Chong. Can we get our car, our map, and a radio now? We’ve done what you’ve asked.” Sumire translates your request to him, and he needs. He points to a man, and calls him over, and quickly relays the request.

Sumire says, “Chong’s giving us one of his cars. It’ll have a map, and there’ll be a radio hidden in the glovebox. The map’ll be marked with some hidden routes too so we can stay off the road and out of sight of the IJA.” You nod. Good, good. “Oh, he doesn’t know where we’re going by the way, I made sure to exclude that. I knew you’d get mad.”

“I’d be furious,” you say. “And dock your pay too.” Sumire crosses her arms, pouting a bit. “Don’t give me that look. You ain’t being cute.” Sumire rolls her eyes, walking away. “Chong, thank you.” You pat him on the arm. “We owe you.” He nods, allowing you three to pass.

The hidden road through the forest is bumpy, and it is night as well, but you gotta keep moving. If you don’t the IJA is gonna catch up. Rana is trying to go to sleep, but every bump and bruise the car gets keeps snapping her awake. Sumire though is completely and utterly fast asleep despite not having as much room in the front passenger seat. As for you, you can’t sleep. For various reasons, one the bullet wound in your shoulder. Two, that huntress that fought you to a standstill. Three, if you fall asleep, you’ll probably get in a car accident.

You sigh, keeping your eyes on the road. Have to keep moving.

Rana leans in, frowning harshly. “… can we stop?” she squeaks. “I can’t take-“ Another bump, sending her head into the ceiling. She rubs her head, groaning. “I can’t take this anymore.”

“We have to keep moving, Rana, just please try to get some sleep, okay?” She whines a bit, rubbing her eyes as she retreats into the backseat. She shuts her eyes and hugs herself as the car rumbles on the rough terrain. Truth be told you can barely see anything anymore even with the headlights. You watch in the rearview mirror as Rana tries desperately to go sleep, and fail.

Poor girl. Hopefully you can stop when you get there. You yawn quietly, then hear the sound of plane engines roaring overhead. You shut the headlights off, and then continue moving through the night. Just a few more hours until dawn. Just a few more hours to lose the Japs in these woods.

You bite your tongue. You should’ve invested in some stimulants.

-

-

The next day is here, and you’ve made great time. But your arms feel like jelly and your eyes feel like they’re going to collapse. Rana lies still in the backseat, finally having fallen asleep. Sumire meanwhile kicks up her feet on the dashboard, whistling as you drive up the mountain path. You’ve got to be awake for this part, and even the slightest mistake could mean the death of you three.

Sumire looks over at you, then pokes you with a little static shock. “Agh!” You scream. Rana remains asleep, completely comatose. “Sumire!” You slap the dashboard. “Not now! I’m driving!”

She giggles, holding her hands up between you and her. “Relax, relax! I’m making sure you’re awake! Hehehe…” She crosses her arms then crosses her legs over. God, as if you need more distractions. “We’re almost there though, are we?”

“I don’t know.” You look over at her, your eyes bloodshot and hanging atop some heavy bags. “How about you check the map.” She shrugs, then unfolds the map and takes a look. She shrugs again. Okay, fine, that means you’re almost there.

You stop the car however. “Why’d we stop?” asks Sumire. You point ahead. Forward is a simple rope bridge, too narrow and too fragile for the car. “Oh, we walking?” You nod. “Cool, cool.” You and Sumire step out, then you bang on the car to wake Rana. She falls out, her backpack already on as she stumbles to a standing position. The three of you make your way to the bridge, then stop at one of the posts. “Hold on.”

“What?” You glare at her, then she points to one of the posts, scrawled over in Chinese. “So?”

Sumire looks at you, a little more serious this time. “It says, ‘All who enter, must respect the dead, for the dead sleep here.’” Oh, you could use some sleep. “Basically, don’t do anything that looks like you’re desecrating any corpses or anything?” Honestly, you’ve never heard of Chinese monks and the dead or…

Damn it, you didn’t get enough sleep. “Awwww…” Sumire leans over, tilting her head with a very smug grin. “Is Wittle Wady Wiberty fawing asweep?” You try to slap her, and she simply steps out of the way. “Does Wittle Wady Wiberty want big strong onee-sama to carry her there?”

“I don’t think the Japs will…” You yawn loudly, then kneel down and start curling up. Forget it. Too tired to sleep in the car. “I don’t think they’re going to follow us up here.” You shut your eyes. “Just… fuggedaboutit.”

-

-

You open your eyes, and your eyes quickly focus out of the dreamy blur. What a nice nap. You yawn a bit, then roll over onto the rocky road. Nice nap for the place you slept on you suppose. You sit up, then look at the car. You squint, narrowing your eyes. Is that blood? When did that get there? You stand up then turn around.

Rana.

“Rana.” You step over to her, lying on her side, blood pooling around her. You blink. Dead. Oh no. She’s dead. You look back to see the car, and find Sumire slumped over on the dashboard. No, oh God no, no, no no no no.

“Yooohooo…” You blink, then turn around again to see…

She grins, flashing her bloody knives as she steps towards you. “What? Not happy to see little old me?” She blinks, pausing. “Oh. Did you want ze stereotypical Kraut aczent? Is this not wunderbar?” She grins again, wildly, madly.

“You– you monster!” You look at your hand, then gasp as you hold it. Your ring! You look back at Knives as she closes on you.

“Looking for zis?” She licks the ring, letting it fester and soak in her mouth. She grins again, letting it sit between her teeth. “Come get it!” You blink, falling on your butt. No, no. This isn’t how things are supposed to happen! You quickly turn and try to crawl away.

No dice, she jumps on you, holding you down with her weight. You whine as her teeth sink into her neck. “Aagh! No, stop it!” you cry. “Stop!”

“I could…” Her saliva soaks into your skin, you can feel her tongue lashing you as she whispers into your ear. “… nah, I won’t.”

-

-

You jolt awake, banging your head on the car ceiling. “AAAGHH!” You scream. Sumire rushes in, eyes wide.

“What!?” she yells. “What happened!?”

“Agh!” You hold your head, groaning. Your shoulder too stings with the same kind of pain from that bullet. “Dang it, dang it!” You turn over. “Agh…” You sit up, holding your head. Sumire sits into the car with you, holding your shoulder. “Ah, nuts.” You look at her, and find her looking at with the most horrified expression on her face. “… look it’s nothing.” You gently slap her face away. “It’s nothing, I- I… it was just a nightmare.”

“Oh?” Sumire tilts her head. “Of what?”

It doesn't matter. What time is it?

We, personally, haven't actually been at war. Yes, the Nazis are a pain in the neck, but these have been skirmishes. We would notice if it were a real war.

Ok then, amending it to 'How long have we've been fighting anyway?'

> “You don’t want to know.”

You shake your head. “You don’t want to know.”

She purses her lips a little, skeptical. “Oh? Is there really actually something mighty Lady Liberty is afraid of?” You puff, rolling your eyes. “Come on, you can tell me! I won’t use it to scare you or anything!” You push her stupid face away, and she laughs a little. “Haha! Lighten up, Libby! Come on!”

“What time is it?” you ask.

“Half past twelve,” she says. “We already had breakfast. We were just waiting on you to wake up so we could start crossing the bridge.” You nod, grabbing your backpack and stepping out. Nothing like a nice power nap interrupted by a nightmare to get things going for you. You whirl your arm around, loosening it up as you start towards the bridge. Rana sits by it, napping a little.

“Wake up,” you say. Rana bolts awake, and quickly stands and follows you and Sumire onto the rickety and old wood bridge. It shakes as you step on the rotting wood planks. It’s a miracle this bridge has held on for this long. You look back to see Sumire going along as usual while Rana lags behind a bit, holding the rope. “Sumire, go back for Rana, keep her steady.”

She sighs, crossing her arms. “Always gotta babysit…” Sumire waits up for Rana while you walk ahead. “Come on! We ain’t got all day!” A thick fog rolls into the area. You can’t even see the other end of the bridge, and very soon the end you started at becomes practically invisible in this thick fog as well. Rana holds onto Sumire, shivering a bit with fear as they walk slowly behind you.

You sigh. That nightmare. You pat your cheek, a little bit of sweat. Must’ve really got to you. You can’t tell anyone what that nightmare was about that. Sumire would never let you hear the end of it, and SHE would somehow find out about it and twist it t something completely insane. You shudder. Just thinking about that insane woman and how she’s now the leader of the Magisch Korps just makes your hair stand on end.

Wait.

You stop, and so do Sumire and Rana. Something else is making your hair stand on end. “Hold on.” You turn around, then kneel down. The bridge sways a bit, making Rana hold onto Sumire even tighter as you check around the planks.

“Um. Are you going to hold onto me all day?” asks Sumire.

“Yes!” Rana grips Sumire intensely. “I hate these bridges!” You squint as you lean over the edge. “Christine! Don’t!” You wave her off a bit as you hear something. A weird noise, a weird rhythmic noise.

You look under the planks to see a ticking grenade. “Get away!” you yell.

Too late, it explodes, launching you onto one end and Sumire and Rana to the other. The bridge falls, and you desperately hold onto the planks as it starts dropping down like a pendulum. “Libby!” Sumire screams as she and Rana disappear into the fog, dropping with their end of the bridge. You can only watch them as-

You smash into a cliff. You hold onto dear life as the rope and wood holds together. You look down. Did you really drive up this far in the middle of the night?! You sigh, steeling yourself. Someone knew you were going to take this road. At least now they might think you’re dead.

Your ear twitches. Uh oh. You look back to hear the sound of a rocket. Out of the fog comes Tiny again, wielding her big assault rifle. She floats up out of the clouds and at your level, bringing the gun to bear against you.

Ah nuts.
