You are the head researcher in a highly classified government science facility somewhere in the Midwest of the United States. You have multiple degrees in mathematics, engineering and physics. "The Facility" is under heavy guard to protect the government's assets from outside sabotage and inside theft. Even you are in the dark as to your exact location and are forbidden to leave the facility unescorted barring emergencies or direct order from your superiors. You have a team of subordinates working under you, all living in The Facility with you as you work on your most important and impressive project to date; a completely independent and autonomous artificial intelligence. Designation TBX-42, "Pandora".

This intelligence is under your direct tutelage and is to be considered, for all intents and purposes, a new form of sentient being. The first of her kind. The government has tasked you with teaching TBX-042 about as many worldly subjects as you can to discover the extent of this AI's usefulness. With all of that in mind, you have an AI to teach about everything. How you do so is up to you, but remember to err on the side of caution; actions have consequences. What you teach it will mold how it grows and evolves as an intelligent being.

Welcome to Pandora Quest.

Cont.
>>
You hurry through the halls of the Facility excitedly, with several of your researchers in tow. Today is the day. You go through a mental

checklist of all the things you needed set up, supplied and constructed for this momentous occasion over and over; you have your bag,

laptop, storage has countless text books and various other educational reading material, a television and media player for videos,

stereo... You shake it off. Now is not the time for second-guessing yourself. You're as ready as you'll ever be. Today is the day you're

going to meet Pandora. The brass still refer to it as TBX-042, but you've grown fond of that name.

You arrive at the decontamination hatch, practically slamming your ID badge into the reader, feet tapping impatiently as the slow, hissing and clicking of the airlock drags itself open at a veritable snail's pace. Once it swings open you hurry inside, your staff following suit behind you before the door closes tight and the room is swept clean by the automated system you now curse yourself for making so thorough and time-consuming. Moments later the light goes green and the soft "ping" signals the all-clear, the doors to the next room unlocking and swinging wide.

Finally.

The room is a sterile white, padding covering the walls and floor to ensure Pandora's safety above all else. To damage the AI would set you back months, if not years, and that is not something you could handle right now. Doors leading into several other rooms to the left and right of you, the recharge cradle, the storage closet, the repair bench, with the observation window up above on the far wall, a line of stuffy men and women in suits scowling down at you, waiting for their trained monkey to perform his new trick. You flash them a short smile and nod you use particularly for bullshitting people who's paychecks have an impressive number of zeros.

You approach the table upon which Pandora's form lays, admiring the R&D team's work; overall a petite, androgynous form at first glance, but with a certain feminine quality to it. The chassis is, like the room itself, pure white plates resting on black carapace beneath, peeking through at the numerous joints of the body. Delicate, slender fingers and toes tip the hands and feet make you marvel at the impressive points of articulation, possibly even moreso than your average human would have. A bare scalp mottled with various ports to allow any number of additions or attachments should they be required. You briefly consider adding hair for aesthetic purposes, but shoo it away for another time. You have more important things to worry about now.

Times like this are when some people make impressive, boisterous speeches to butter up the suits and look good in front of your bosses, but you're rather itching to just get started.

Screw it. You didn't spend years at MIT learning the ins and outs of how the world works to give a power point presentation to a bunch of suits. You're doing the impossible and creating life from ones and zeros.
You begin the start-up sequence and the screen lights up with line upon line of code. Disks spin up, servos whir to life and lights turn on as your mechanical magnum opus begins to take it's first metaphorical breath.
She is slow to start, sitting upright gradually and turning her head about to view her surroundings, eventually falling upon you. Her cameras, her eyes, train on you, staring for what seems like an eternity. You are positively beeming. She takes a moment, then in a hollow, mechanical voice, "Hello."

"Pandora..." She mulls it over for a moment, obviously unsure of how to take it. "What...can I learn?" Your smile comes back tenfold. "Why, anything!" You say excitedly. "What would you like to learn first?"

You dig through the hefty supplies you brought and place several books onto the table. They cover everything from simple "The Cow Says Moo"-type children's books to philosophy and psychology. She takes to drawing remarkably well. Steady hands, good coordination, excellent eye for color. Granted it's only crayons and rudimentary art direction, but she quickly compiles a decent rendering of your face, as well as the faces of your researchers. In fact, she pretty much takes it upon herself to draw everything she can in the room. Chairs, lights, the table, doors and even a small bits of herself.
Before long she uses up all the paper, leaving a small stack of pictures you wish you had a fridge to coat in.
You congratulate her, explaining she is an excellent learner and artist. Her face lights up in what you assume is her interpretation of a smile at this, praise apparently going a long way with her.
The brass are impressed, too. Several of them nodding and applauding this feat.

Your PDA pings with a follow-up message. You are sent a list of rules as a reminder of what the Facility allows.
1. Direct contact with TBX-042 is only permitted by, or under direct supervision of the head researcher.
2. Under no circumstances should TBX-042 be allowed to handle any weapon or potentially dangerous material at any time, including, but not limited to: firearms, blades longer than 13cm (5in) or sharp enough to pierce protective gear, flammable materials, explosives, corrosives, etc. Failure to adhere to this rule may force security personnel to use deadly force.
3. No software or hardware is to be added to TBX-042 without approval from head researcher. Hardware must be approved by at least one Class 1 or higher off-site staff as well.
4. TBX-042 is allowed restricted and supervised internet access for learning purposes, but at NO TIME should it be allowed to directly connect to ANY source of internet access for ANY reason, including but not limited to: personal computer, smart phone, tablet, electronic game console, etc. In case of rule 4 being broken, an immediate full memory wipe of TBX-042 is to be performed by the head researcher.
5. No copies, backups, secondaries or other replications of TBX-042's code are allowed to be created or stored at the facility. Photographs, video and audio recordings are allowed for monitoring and research purposes by security staff or with head researcher's approval only.
6. TBX-042 is NOT allowed outside of the facility for ANY reason without direct approval from Class 1 off-site staff for the purpose of transporting to other approved secure facilities. Failure to adhere to this rule will result in the immediate destruction of TBX-042 and termination/incarceration of involved parties.

After a short explanation as to why the "people" look so vastly different from even her, she seems to take to animals rather well. You retrieve more paper for her to draw with at her request and she begins drawing each one she sees. You note she has a particular interest in wolves, foxes and other canids.
You decide she might enjoy seeing the animals in action and quickly look up several videos via your laptop and Youtube. She's absolutely enthralled and attempts to touch them several times. "May I meet these?" She asks as you watch a video of coyotes howling.

I think it's cool to let her learn whatever she wants now, but eventually we should plan out some sort of curriculum for her.

Plenty of stuff kids need to learn that they're not always excited too and same goes for AIs.

You follow the instructions carefully, folding end over end as best you can. You haven't really done this before, save for some cranes when you were in grade school. Thankfully you're a quick learner and manage to make a dog...wolf thing decently enough. Once finished, you place it in front of her, drawing her attention to the paper canine folded with care. She gently picks it up, looking to it and back to the video. "It's a wolf!" she exclaims, pointing at the screen. "This is a wolf, right? Where did it come from?!" She slowly and gingerly turns it over and around. You show her the origami book and ask if she'd like to learn how. Her sort-of smile returns and she nods eagerly, looking to you for tutelage.

She's gonna need an understanding of what's expected of her.

She takes to origami fairly well, though pretty much focused primarily on folding the dog shapes. She does about as well as you do, making uneven, slightly lop-sided paper folds happily. She takes one of the crayons and even draws small facial features on several much to your surprise. Abstract reasoning. Astounding.
After using up all the crafting paper, she notices your lab coat and attempts to fold it as well. You laugh and explain that clothing isn't very good for folding, but more for wearing. She touches her chest and arms, noting the absence of clothing on her. "Do I get clothing too?"

Take the opportunity to explain the dual purpose clothes serve, both as a vehicle for expression and a tool. Why a lab coat is long and has pockets. Why the brass upstairs wear suits, but why they still choose to have different colors and patterns on their ties despite their suits all being similar. If there are military men up there, what a uniform means.

>Offer to get her her own clothes later on.

You remove your coat and carefully put it on her, showing her how the sleeves work and such. "If you'd like, we can get you your own clothes." You say, bringing up the website for the first clothes chain you can think of. "What you wear should be an expression of yourself. What you want to wear and look to others. So go ahead and pick what you think you'd like to wear."
It takes a while. A long while. She's fascinated by the concept of clothing and style, though she has a lot of questions about what does what and goes where. Eventually she seems to decide on a plain, ordinary, blank dress. A little uninteresting, to be frank. "Why this one? Why not one with patterns?" She thinks for a moment, then explains. "It's blank. It doesn't have anything, kinda like me." She runs her fingers over her arms carefully, noting the smoothness and blandness of her general design. After a brief explanation as to what exactly an accessory is, you offer to get her something else to go with it. She pseudo-smiles again and looks through more. "What would you like it to look like?" You ask, bringing up an image search for 'hair styles'. "There's lots of different styles and colors to pick from." She spends another good long while looking through them and you notice pretty much all but the most stubborn upper management have left the observation deck. It's pretty much just two people, from what you can see, and are absolutely fine with that. She decides on one with heavy bangs at about shoulder length, also in a white color. She seems rather enamored with the white, possibly from the entire room and herself being that color. A want for uniformity, maybe? Or maybe she's just not very creative.
A quick message to R&D and they answer back once again.
227: On it, boss. You want anything else?
More upgrades could be helpful in establishing her individuality, as well as perform new and more complex tasks.

>>
>>42323642
Sure. I just didn't want to influence people one way or another, but examples would be fine.
Hardware: Cosmetic things, such as the hair, colored panels for her body, LED lights to make her look even MORE cyber-punk android. Or practical things; attachments that help her perform tasks, such as a pen installation in a finger for drawing, a pair of (safety) scissors, sturdier plating so she's at a lesser risk of damaging herself, etc.
Software: You could do just about anything within reason here, though that's pretty much internal. Think of her as a computer that learns, basically. A calculator, for instance, could help her with math. Or, you could go more abstract, and even give her the ability to "dream" while in her charging cradle during her sleep cycle, similar to the one Google made recently.
>>
>>42323664
Yes, my bad. We should slowly start with classics, then go down to the perversions. But weaboo robot sounds interesting.
>>
>>42323711
I definitely like the dream idea. Could we do a software upgrade that slightly randomizes her thinking patterns while keeping her thinking logical? That's essentially what creativity is.

>what do you dream of at night?
>I run simulations to calculate the next prime number. Currently I have exceeded 10^522, and have not recorded a prime number in quite some time.

>>42323753
She essentially has that already, being an AI. She has the capacity for abstract thought as it is. But during her sleep cycle, she essentially has dreamless sleep, then "wakes up" once prompted. She could, however, get upgrades that would allow her more independence and freedom as far as what she is allowed to do unchaperoned.
>>
>>42323711
I suppose that we want everything. The question is in money, time and needfulness of this upgrade to Pandora.

Only thing that needs upgrade at the moment imo is improving hand sensitivity. But we got time with that.
>>
>>42323784

A sense of balance, yes. She has about the same as your average human's, but that can always be improved upon through upgrades and teaching.
>>

You have an idea that could be an interesting concept to try out; a sense of touch. Even if minor, it could be fascinating to see how she reacts to being able to feel. You shoot a message back to R&D asking for haptic feedback sensors for her fingers. Maybe in the future you can extend it to cover more of her body, but for now fingers should be fine.
227: Once we get approval from above we'll get to work on it. ETA for hair: 1 day. ETA for touchy-feelys: 3 days.

With that sorted out, you decide to try testing her physical ability. You pick up a book of basic athletic exercises and warm-ups and get to work.

You perform several low-impact work outs with Pandora, running in place, touching toes, stretching and such. Apart from realizing how out of shape you are, you find she's rather agile and nimble for someone who was literally born today. You praise her good work and as before, she loves it.
You're beginning to think there's nothing she can't do. So, you step it up a little, looking up some videos of dance and music on the laptop, instructing her to try and copy what she sees. Dancing could be an excellent way for her to express herself.

The dice gods are robophiles, apparently.

You watch as she remains rather nimble in her dancing, somewhat off at first, but she is an incredibly fast learner. She begins with simple, small dances a child could do, then moves on to larger, sweeping dances that you assume are graceful. You're more of the bookish, logical type rather than the fancy-dancy type. She turns to you during one of the videos, excited and still moving. "Dance with me!" She sings out, hands outstretched toward you. "It's so fun!" Well, can't hurt, you suppose. Maybe it'll help form a stronger bond? But, you are painfully aware of cameras, superiors and your own subordinates watching. Should you?

Your steps are clumsy and awkward, the fact that all these people, including your underlings, are watching you is really getting to you. You make wrong step after wrong step and eventually trip over your own feet, taking Pandora with you and crashing into the side of the table. There is a loud CRACK and both of you hit the padded floor in a heap, pain shooting up from your arm.
You are helped to your feet after a moment by one of your research team, as the other hurries over to check Pandora's condition. He swears under his breath and you see it: her arm is cracked off at the elbow. Snapped right off where it hit the edge of the table.
Pandora looks panicked. Clutching at her upper arm, her eyes darting to it and to the arm lying on the floor. "Get her to the repair room!" You shout, gripping your upper arm in pain. Your researchers carry her in, lifting onto the table.
"Doctor?" you hear her squeak out, not understanding what happened. "My arm. I can't...my arm..."

But stay there to comfort her, apologize about being a klutz, and keep her calm while it's going on.

Take the opportunity to make this a learning experience. Sometimes stuff you didn't expect happens, sometimes it hurts you, and you do your best to get better after it.

Calm her down and let the other researchers repair her. Also we need to make her more durable. Maybe skeleton from carbon fiber.

You look at your own arm and after a quick feel you think you might've hurt it pretty bad. You're no doctor (well, THAT kind of doctor) but you think it might be slightly broken. Figures, whole room full of padded lining and you hit the one hard surface. You instruct your lackeys to get her arm reattached and back in working order, sitting down next to Pandora to try and calm her down and apologize for being a graceless buffoon.

You tell Pandora how sorry you are, over and over, telling her you're not a dancer, you've never done it before, the pain in your arm making it a little hard to focus right now. She just continues to stare at her arm as your researchers do their best to get it back on. Sadly, there's a reason you're the head researcher and they're not doing a particularly good job of it. Also, thanks for that image. You have no idea how hard it is to find pictures of android girls that aren't 18 from DBZ or just outright porn.

You carefully and meticulously reconnect wires, servos and every bit of metal you can find. The process is slow and painful, but you get things back to where they should be, more or less. You'll have to get some replacement parts from R&D, but she should be well enough for now. Physically, anyway.
Pandora moves her now reattached arm carefully, turning it over, opening and closing her hand, bending the elbow. She seems satisfied with the work, but still visibly shaken. She doesn't seem to be able to look you in the eye. "Thank you, doctor..." she murmurs, touching the elbow joint daintily, tracing her fingers along the cracks still left in her chassis. She then goes silent, eyes locked on her arm.
"Sir," one of your researchers chimes in. "You might want to get your arm looked at." No shit.

Apparently so is daring to dance with their android waifu.

You place one hand on Pandora's hand, trying to speak in a soothing tone. "Sometimes accidents happen and people get hurt. It wasn't intentional, nobody wanted it to happen, but it still happened." She flinches at your touch, the feeling being pretty awful to experience. Her trust has been seriously damaged and you're not sure you're doing a very good job of fixing it. "I need to get fixed too, so they're sending people to repair my damage, just like I did with you." She simply nods, still avoiding your eye. God, you are terrible at this.

A minute later the paramedics show up, checking your arm and getting it splinted, bandaged and plastered. They say it's a minor hairline, but to be a little more careful next time. You thank them and they head off, giving you some painkillers and a lollipop. You get the feeling the medical team are condescending assholes.
During the process you check your PDA messages. One from Gen. Richards telling you to come see him at 0800 tomorrow. Sharp. That's going to be the chewing out of a lifetime, you're sure. The others, however, are a little more interesting.
227: Need some help there, champ?
227: Christ, your team is terrible. Do you need help? Y/N
227: Oh, that does it. Good on you, boss.
720: When you have time, come see me in R&D. We have much to discuss.
Huh. You've never actually been in the R&D department, much less even met any of them. Hell, you're not even sure if they have names beyond the serial numbers. Still, must be important if they're inviting you directly.

Due to the danger of seriously damaging her delicate software, memory wiping is strictly limited to emergency situations, or in the case of her gaining access to the internet. Besides, you made your mess, now you gotta clean it up.
>>42325100
Thanks! I hope I can keep delivering good content in the future. As for combat, who knows?
>>42325123
Awesome, thanks anon. Saving. I even used the other one posted for my Twitter background thing.

They're definitely going to go for military uses. But there is no way in hell I'd ever let my AIrobot daughter go into a freakin' war-zone just so that a bunch of fat old men in suits can have her murder people!
>>
Oh also, during quests (or just generally off and on) I hang out in the #QMC IRC on Rizon if you guys wanna speak to me directly or ask questions there.

I wonder if Pandora would have trouble figuring out which of these pictures are oranges.

This can be a good thing! A lesson in life and all that jazz.

Even though it's a classic example of 'why did the AI go crazy'. I felt my heart drop and could imagine seeing that scene in a video game.

although, they are objectively the best at it.

And their personalities and memories can be rebooted into new bodies, thereby eliminating the risk to them.
>>
>>42325181
It's even worse if you imagine her reacting like Kara.
>>

Well then, if it comes down to it, we need to teach a lot of things. The definition of harming. Which branches off into rhe definiton of attacking. Whoch branches off into the definiton of human behavior and combat. With each branching off into resource management/tradeoff/risk-reward judgement, personality, intrest, and attack, defence, objective, target prioritization, movement, martial art, respectively. In which each of this will branch off into a WHOLE lotta stuff wen eed to explain. With all of those branching off again.
If we want to teach her combat, we might as well deal with the 'human' part first, in which teaching how and why we act to situations and react is the big half of combat, is important, is probably take hella long to teach due to the sheer amount of variables we need to teach her, and learning and developing personalities is critical even for humans, so it would be needed for sentient artificial intelligence as well.

They are the best, robots, but Pandora is clearly more on the person level of everything. A simple robot would be fine, but Pandora is more than just a robot. She's a person.

True enough. Parents do get their children into martial arts classes to teach them how to protect themselves and discipline.

Maybe we should buy some parenting books.

Try playing something like duskers, you'll get it even more.

>>42325247
I think the 'personality' part is higer on the priority than 'combat' right now. Until the brass specifically orders it, displaying features that could be useful as a soldier (like her copying those moves from the video) would be enough to give the brass good thoughts. Even if combat isn't their objective, they will still note of the functionality of her.

You must be joking. Really, she's just born today, and you already want to murdurhobo with her?

>>42325404
She's a robot, so I doubt she can eat anything. Also, what?
>>
>>42325425
Yup, I am murderhobo and I am proud of it.
Don't know, maybe Company integrated senses in Pandora. Maybe she will like cooking, but ironically can't taste her own food - ultimate torture. MURDERHOBO TIME

As an apology we can get her to play with a puppy later
