You are Giles, Master Thief, lover extraordinaire, and genuine son of a bitch.

What began as the the simple quest of a career thief out to steal a crown has turned into so much more.

While undercover in the palace you befriended the princesses, both big and small, were reunited with your sister and generally had a pretty good time.

On the night in which you were to steal the crown, disaster struck. The King and Queen were murdered in their beds, and the little princess would have suffered a similar fate had you not intervened.

Now Fate's Chosen needs the young girl to die in order to set Fate's path back on track and you, Devil that you are, are the only one who can stop him.

But you have been set horrifyically off course, due to an intervention from a certain 'evil witch'. Now the odds are against you even being in Laust when the pivotal "Dark Night" arrives.

But you wouldn't be much of a Gambler if long odds intimidated you.

"No horses" The accented man says.
"Camels?" You ask.
"None in this village" He says.
"But there are some around" You say.
"None that you would want to see" He says.

"Oh, come on. How bad could they be?" You ask.
"Not the animals, but the ones that ride them" He says

"Who rides them?" You ask.
"Raiders" He says.
"So I just have to go find some raiders" You say.
"You do not find the raiders" He says.

"So how am I supposed to get a camel?" You ask.
"The raiders will come here, in time" He says.

"How much time?" You ask.

The man shrugs.

"You're not being especially helpful" You say.
"You are an outsider" He says.

"Not supposed to help outsiders?" You ask.

He shakes his head.

You sigh.

"Can you at least point me in the direction of these raiders?" You ask.
"Do you carry anything valuable?" He asks.

You try to keep a straight face, but end up cracking up and laughing your ass off.

"Do I have anything valuable" You say, chuckling a little.
"Is that a yes?" He asks.
"That depends on the point of the question" You say.

"If you carry valuables, the raiders will come" He says.
"And you aren't worried?" You ask.
"They do not harm us" He says. "They only ask that we pay their price"

"They sound more like extortionists than raiders" You say.
"Ex... what?" He asks.

"Extortionists" You say. "You don't have that word down here?"
"We might, sorry. The language of the North is not my first tongue" He says.

You flip languages, and start speaking in Alka-Habran. "This more your speed?"
His eyes light with recognition. "Yes, it is" He says. "I did not think you spoke our tongue"

"I grew up on this continent" You say. "To the north, in Alka-Habra"
"Beyond the desert" He says. "Come, I will show you around"

"What happened to not helping the outsider?" You ask.
"You are not as much of an outsider as I had thought" He says. "You have my apologies for that"

"Do you get many travellers here?" You ask.
"Only those who have crossed the desert" He says. "They stop here before making their way back north"

"Why would anyone cross this desert?" You ask.
"There is only one reason" He says.

"What is that?" You ask.
"There are treasures in this desert beyond gold or silver" He says.
"The Breath of Rog" You say.
"Yes" He says.

"Anyone come through recently?" You ask.
"Only one. A man in black. It happened about a month ago" He says.

That must have been someone from the bortherhood...

"Other than that, there has only been you and Cassandra" He says.
"You know her by name?" You ask.
"She comes by often" He says.
"Why?" You ask
"To see the raiders, like you" He says.
"Well, I didn't come specifically to see the raiders" You say.
"But you do wish to see them" He says.

"I do" You say.
"Then you must wait" He says. "Come, we should get out of the sun"

The man, Harmen is his name, lead you into one of the stone buildings. The inside is not really furnished, but there are places to sit.

"So these raiders... they'll just show up if I have valuables?" You ask,
"They are... different" Harmen says. "You will see"

"When can I expect them?" You ask.
"Soon" He says. "They should be on their way already. Cassandra never has to wait long"

"What do you know about Cassandra?" You ask.
"Very little" He says.

That was pretty much what you were expecting, though you're still disappointed. You had hoped to learn at least a little bit about her...

"Alright... well I know why I've come to see the raiders... Why does Cassandra come to see them?" You ask.
"They are... friends" He says.
"You sound uncertain" You say.
"Friends is the best word that I could put to it" He says.

"But not the right one" You say.
"No, I would not think so" He says. "Perhaps you can ask them when they arrive"

"You really aren't worried about them" You say.
"They are kind enough" He says.
"But they do take your stuff" You say.

"Only what they require, nothing more" He says. "The cost of fighting them would be much higher"
"And what do they take?" You ask.
"Not much, for we have little" He says. "We grow food where the heat doesn't choke the plants, we barter and trade with anyone who comes through. They raiders take only a portion"

"Do you get anything in return?" You ask.
"They do not harm us, for they could if they so wished" He says. "And they keep other harmful things away"

"A strange sort of agreement" You say.

"Indeed" He says. "But I have answeredyour questions, and now I have some of my own"
"Understandable" You say.

"Why are you so eager to return north?" He asks.

"Well, no sense in heading out there if they're coming to me" You say.
"Wise" He says. "The desert will sap your strength. Best to stay out of it while you can"

"So why do you people live here?" You ask. "If there are raiders, and the heat, and the food doesn't grow well, why not move?"

"It is not that simple" He says. "There are few ways away from this place, and none of them are appealing. To the north there is the desert, to the west and south, the seas are infested with pirates, and to the east the mountains are more unforgiving than the desert"

"But you could make it across the desert" You say. "Others have done it"
"Yes, many have made the crossing. But none have done it recently" He says. "There is word of strange creatures roaming the desert of late. I know that you must go that way, but be very careful"

"I couldn't go throw my hat in with the pirates?" You ask. "War's going on up north, convincing them to capitalize on that wouldn't be a difficult task"

"They are at war themselves, with themselves" He says. "You throw your hat in with one group, and you'll find the rest more than willing to kill you"

"So I throw my hat in with the best of them" You say.
"And how do you know which is the best?" He asks.

"Ask around?" You say.
"Ask around where?" He asks.
"The... pirate... hub?" You ask.
"I would not suggest that course of action" He says. "Even the desert is kinder than the pirates. Even if you do manage to find the best of them, they may simply kill you anyway"

"So scratch that plan then..." You say. Even if you did have time to scope out the pirating scene down here, which you don't, you aren't a huge fan of the high seas. Something about the number of factors beyond your control when you're out there bugs you to no end.

"Tell me about these creatures" You say. "If the desert is the only good way out of here, then I may end up tangling with one eventually. I'd like to know what I'm up against"

"I would not fight them" he says. "And there isn't much to say, other than this: they are not of this earth"

"Sorry... I'm gonna need some clarification on that. What do you mean by 'Not of this earth'?" You ask.
"Some of us believe they come from the realm of the gods" He says.

"Like... angels?" You ask.

He nods.

"But angels don't exist" You say.
"Why do you say that?" He asks.
"Because they don't" You say. "They're a myth"

"They are not a myth. They are just as real as demons and devils are" He says. "Just as demons are chaotic beings, who serve the lord of chaos; angels are ordered beings who serve the lord or order"

"The lord of order?" You ask.
"Ah, yes" He says. "I had forgotten that you are from the north. I believe they are called... fates?"

You furrow your brow. "The fates..." You say. That doesn't bode well. You're trying to set their plans off course, and the only things in your way are their servants...

As you mull, a man enters the building. "Harmen, raiders are here" He says.

Harmen nods. "Let us go meet them then"

>[1/2]
>>
You exit the stone house and make your way with Harmen to the edge of the village, where a surprising number of "people" are waiting.

You say "People" because they are not people. They are not even humans. These raiders-

"They're demons" You say.
"I told you they were different" Harmen says.
"You didn't say they were demons" You say.
"I was hoping to see your reaction. You did not disappoint" He says. "Now, remember to be polite to a point. Don't let them walk all over you though"

The group of raiders... there must be around 50 of them, is composed entirely of demons of different shapes and sizes. At the head of the group is one riding a camel, who looks almost human; save for the fact that he has 4 arms...

"I thought I smelled new blood" The leader says. His voice is gravelly, but understandable. You're actually surprised he can speak at all. Most demons can't. "You have a name, boy?"

Pssh, I came up with that theory like 15 threads ago.

The real head twister is the bit where Cassandra is working with Roderick, and might be twisting his actions to overthrow the fates whether we oppose him or not.
>>
You smile. "No" You say.

The demon gives you an incredulous look. "A devil then?" He asks. "Works for me. None of us have names either, and don't even think about trying to give us one. If he-of-many-bows over there even hears the word 'name' out of your mouth, he'll put 6 arrows in it. At once"

You look past the demon to see who he-of-many-bows is, and you're honestly kind of impressed. The demon in question 6 arms shooting out of various parts of its body, and each arm ends in another pair of arms, each of which has a bow drawn.

"Impressive" You say.
"Luck of the draw" The leader says. "Some of us come out like me or him, some of us come out as piles of useless flesh"

"Well, nobody is perfect" You say.
The demon laughs. "All the humor of a devil, I see" He says. "I thought I smelled Cassandra as well, where is she?"

"She left" You say.
The demon snorts. "Figures. Leave it to that damn witch to stop by without saying hello" He says.

The important things first.

So is Roderick going to get any screentime or is he just going to be Cassandra's puppet that just sits in the background?
>>
>>42315406
In the bible Satan tried to convince Jesus to sell his soul in exchange for allowing him to rule the world. The difference here is that Roderick definitely doesn't have the wisdom or willpower to turn that down. She probably intends to drive him in a manner that both allows him to succeed, and completely derails the story. She's attempting to derail the great train that is the worlds plot, and she wants to have the lead engineer working for her. Naturally, he'll go down with the train.

And failing.

"You will probably want to get it to sit" The demon says.

"Comfy?" The demon asks.
"It'll do" You say. "Thanks for your help"
"Not a problem" The demon says. "Just remember what I told you, and tread carefully through the desert. Try to keep out of sight if you can"

"No it wont" You say, kicking the camel into motion. "See you around. Maybe I'll come back to visit some day"

"No you won't" The demon says. "This place is miserable and you know it"

You wave to them as the camel takes you out into the desert, and the heat...

>>
Good gods is it ever hot out here.

It's like someone lit the whole place on fire, except you're not dying...

That didn't even make sense. That's how hot it is.

You ended up dismounting your camel to change clothes to something lighter but still covering. you know enough about desert survival to get through here. You're also glad that you made so many 'supply stops' along your journey, as it's left you with a nice surplus of water: enough for 4 people on a journey through temperate Laust, so it'll probably be enough for you on this journey... hopefully.

You can also see why it's called the glass desert. There are huge swaths of land all around where the rocks and sand give way to smooth glass.

All around, the sun catches these swaths both in the distance and in view, reflecting it back to you. It causes the desert itself to kind of sparkle. It'd be beautiful, if it weren't so damn hot.

While you're admiring the shiny landscape, your camel stops and tries to change course.

"Whatsa matter humpy?" You ask. Humpy is what you named the camel.

You look ahead at where you were going, and see nothing. You aren't getting any bad vibes either...

Still, an animal's instincts tend to be pretty good...

You change your course, moving towards a glassier area of the desert.

In the meantime, you search your cloak for something the might help you out here... You really do need to take some time out to go through and catalogue everything you have in here. Especially since you can't see what you're reaching for.

Your hand finds something that feels cylindrical, and you pull it out. Then you laugh. "I completely forgot that I had this" You say. In your hand is a polished wooden... penis. You snagged it from a high class brothel back in Tulia, and have washed it several times since.

You put the dick back in your cloak, and feel around again.

You pull out a small scepter, with 3 crystals set in its head. 2 of the crystals are cracked, while the third remains unblemished. Supposedly the crystals hold some power, and break when used. You didn't care about that when you took it. You just liked it because it was well guarded.

You reach back in... and...

"Gotcha!" You say, pulling out a small sailor's telescope. You nabbed this from the lighthouse on Degri Isle. Hopefully it wasn't missed too much.

You bring it up to your eye and look over at where you were headed, and see nothing.

"Is this thing working?" You ask, looking around through it. You finally look in the direction you're currently going, and your heart sinks.

A pure white, faceless being with feathered wings hovers in your path...

It seemed content to sit before, but now that you've seen it, it flies towards you.

Didn't they just say angels would pretty much bodybag us if we got into a fight? Can we not be suicidal about this?

Why the fuck do you think we could win in a fight against an angel, and if we do, we'll probably get a whole bunch of angels on our ass.
>>
>>42319462
I think the assumption right now is that running just means we die tired, and that it's too late to hide.

Meanwhile, try and find something we can bluff with, if it finds us.

Maybe this can be like Rick & Morty; being naked takes advantage of their extreme discomfort with nudity, rendering them harmless.

You keep looking about for somewhere to hide. There's no way you could beat that thing in a fight. Even if you were on the same level, it has the significant advantage of having wings.

You spy a good thing on the horizon. Buildings. Ruined buildings. Elemeer.

To get there, you have to get past the angel and then outrun it. But you don't have to outrun it for long; just long enough.

You kick your camel, urging it more quickly towards the angel. It seems reluctant, but you force it.

"It was your idea to go this way, humpy. You and I both have to live with that" You say. You draw a few crystal daggers from your cloak, one with Night Shell and one with Dark Fog.

As the Angel comes into view, you can finally get a decent look at it. The creature looks like it was sculpted from marble. Its face is smooth and featureless, hell the whole thing is smooth and featureless. It has a very textbook looking human form, except with wings.

As you get closer, you activate your two daggers, throwing the Dark Fog first and the Night Shell second.

The fog explodes, hopefully obscuring its vision long enough for the Night Shell to hit...

And it does, encasing the Angel in a shell of shadows, and allowing you to pass it on the path to the ruins.

You check behind you, hoping beyond hope that it will stay bound.

A beam of light fires straight upward out of the shell, arcing down to cut open its side. Then the white hands emerge and tear it open, and the Angel bursts forth in pursuit of you.

You glower at it, before turning your attention back to your destination.

You don't have to outrun it forever, just long enough to get some cover...

You urge Humpy to move faster, as the angel does not seem at all happy about its (temporary) imprisonment.

Who knows? Maybe it's like you and it hates cages. You wonder if it also shares your newfound fear of being melted by light beams...

Beams like the ones it's firing right now.

You yank the reins to the side and Humpy just barely gets your asses away from the incoming beam. The beam melts the sand and rock wherever it touches, making the glass desert just a little more glassy with each miss.

You decide to turn and shoot back, whipping a few daggers its way.

It melts most of them with its laser, which appears to come from its face. But one gets through, striking it in the side.

The Angel stops its pursuit to pull out the dagger, letting you and Humpy gain some more gound on it.

You crane your neck to see it pull out the knife. Red blood stains its pure white surface as it flows out of the wound.

It can bleed. If it can bleed, it can die. If it dies, you can kill it. Good information.

*SKREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE*

The Angel lets out an ear piercing shriek and doubles its pace, angrily firing beams of light every which way.

Elemeer is starting to look much farther than it did a second ago...

You need to go back to the book on this one, because you are going to need every trick in there.

You can do this. Hopefully...

You pull out a dagger with Spiral Gust enchanted on it, desperately attempt to boost it, and whip it into the sand. Your desperation pays off, as you pass the knife it explodes into a semi tornado that kicks up sand all over the place.

The Angel's beam is dulled as it sweeps across the tornado, leaving you safe from its attacks until it passes the sand barrier...

Which buys you all of... ten seconds. Maybe 12.

You are going to need better tricks.

Okay Giles, think. You can do this. Thinkthinkthinkthink Got it!

You reach into your cloak and pull out a folded, Honouen style fan. Kielu's fan. This is what you were stealing when that Honouen nobleman tried to cut your head off.

You like that story. Hopefully you'll live to tell it again someday.

You unfold the fan, turn around, and with two hands you swing it. The effect is immediate and, more importantly, exactly what you were hoping for.

The fan supposedly belonged to some kind of wind god, and it was blessed with his power. The effect of swinging it kicked up a small sandstorm. You give it a few more swings, until you're damn well certain that you won't get hit by any more beams.

The gates of Elemeer are so close that you can taste them... hang on, that's sand you can taste. You spit the sand out of your mouth. Maybe the gates taste like sand. You'll have to give them a lick if you survive this.

You're within licking distance of the gates, when the Angel bursts forth from the sandstorm. It flies directly above you, and its face lights up.

You brace yourself for the impending doom, as the Angel slams into the archway above the gate; and Humpy speeds through the gate.

You breathe a sigh of relief, quickly hopping off the camel and leading it into somewhere you can hide.

That Angel is almost definitely not done, but it had an advantage on the open fields. Cities and their streets are your area of expertise.

The Angel will be coming back. And when it does, it will find you ready to face it. Maybe not head on, but face it you will.
