Become The Dragon Quest 8

You are Countess Kotijah Imidarius, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Last time you were under “arrest” by Sir Taret Black, who was escorting your merry band to the capitol using a magic portal. Nice guy, from what you can tell. You went through the portal first, and you're fairly sure that the town was falling under attack as you went through. You arrived to find a room full of soldiers and General Tirio Imidarius, who took you away for interrogation.

His attendant, and as you later learned, his daughter, proceeded to poke around inside your head to check a few things, before telling the general that Ildareth was still alive. You had no idea who she was talking about, until the general revealed that that was your father's name, that your mother was a dragon-blooded witch (you knew about the dragon blooded part), and that he is your uncle, and Millie is your cousin. He then revealed that your father was a famous dragon-slaying knight and leader of the Order of Scales, before leaving to become a wandering adventurer and vanishing mysteriously while hunting down the witch.

After figuring out a few things, he took you to see the magistrate, who you gave the letter address to Duke Lamiring to. He offered you a boon, and you decided to ask for access to the library, which he gave you. A quick trip to the Hall of Records to get your affairs in order and prove who you are, and now you're in the restricted area of the library, doing research with Millie.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.
>>
Necromancy, it turns out, is where magic gets tricky. Your research into it leads you to a few discoveries about magic that were absent from Millie's description. There's a fifth element, for example, one that is referred to as Essence. Essence is the element that composes the soul, and can be created or destroyed unlike all other elements. Necromancy is referred to as a black art because the corruption and destruction of a soul turns it black, which the divine magic of the church which restores and heals turns it a brilliant white.

Necromancy and divine magic are also the only schools of magic that require faith to use, not in a god necessarily, but in an ideal. To turn a corpse into a shambling horror, for instance, a necromancer needs faith in the idea that the soul is a thing that can be bent to his will, just as a divine healer must believe that the power of their god is enough to save someone. Often times the mere notion of station or position within a church can divide their healers into levels of power relative to their rank. Necromancers know no such bounds, and so are often much more powerful than lower ranking members of the church.

Necromancy also has deep ties to alchemy, given that it can affect the nature of something in a way that no other kind of magic can, and most alchemists must know some small degree of necromantic magic to decompose their ingredients properly. Without this small addition to their craft, most alchemical items are impossible to create. Thus there are “approved” necromantic tomes which illustrate how to perform those spells and rituals, leaving out the forbidden practices that lead to blight, zombies, and other such things.

You have two more hours before you should leave the restricted area. It's close to dinner time, as your stomach informs you, and Tirio asked you to save him a seat at your table. You have time enough now to get your friends from the inn and get home in time for dinner, or you could spend some more time here and continue your work. Pick your path, and then if you decide on more research, pick a topic.

You let Millie know that you'd like to leave now and she claps her hands together.

"Alright! Books, back to your homes!"

The books, as if obeying her command, open wide and start to flap their way back to their shelves like birds. Millie walks to your side.

"Where to?"

You shrug and smile.

"Let's get my friends and go home."

Mille grabs your arm and nods, grinning. This time you're prepared for the sensation of travel, your body tingling as Millie turns you both to sparks and flies you out, everything around you a vague blur. The next thing you know you're in a fairly nice inn room. Sena is sitting on a bed carving symbols onto her staff, and Kat is on the other using Gil as a pillow as he reads. Millie cups her hands to her mouth.

"She's here!~"

Sena, Gil and Kat all jump, looking confused and surprised. Sena is the first to recover, tossing her staff aside and running over to hug you. Millie pouts at Sena and huffs.

You return the hug and then pull Millie into one, and Millie latches onto you cheerfully. Sena giggles a bit and smiles.

“We were worried about you, you know... Millie came by earlier to let us know you were ok, but... Gil and Kat were super worried. I knew you'd be alright though.”

Gil smirks a little.

“Uh-huh. I think Kat was the most worried, honestly.”

Kat shies away from Gil, folding her arms and looking away.

“W-Was not. I was worried, sure, but Sena was the one who thought she was going to get herself thrown in prison.”

Sena turns bright red.

“She's lying! I never said that!”

Millie pulls out another treat and pops it into her mouth, nudging you gently.

“This is kinda fun to watch. Want one?”

She offers you a piece of candy, and then pushes it into your mouth when you open it to speak. You take it out for a moment and look at Sena.

“I'm just glad you guys are all alright. I mean, if you had time to worry about me then it couldn't have been all bad.”

Sena nods a little bit, the color fading from her face.

“We were alright. When you walked through the portal the village came under attack. There were a few zombies but we fought them off, and Taret said we were the best new recruits he's ever seen.”

Gil clears his throat at that.

“We, uh... We may have... given him the impression that joining the knights was a good idea. When we left him we said we'd consider it. Apparently there's a brochure somewhere that he said he'd get for us. Food, housing, training. Two years in service to the crown and I'd have enough money saved to open my own little shop.”

Kat climbs off the bed and stretches.

“Meanwhile he said he knew some people I could work for around here. Apparently a lot of the magic around here runs on alchemy, and the other way around.”

You nod slightly.

“Well, I have a surprise for you all, if Millie will do the honors.”

Millie salutes and runs around janking people towards you.
>>
“Please keep your hands and arms inside the magical lightning bolt at all times.”

Gil has just enough time to look perplexed before the familiar tingling strikes and you feel yourself rocketing away. You land on a stone patio with a fountain in the center, set into the side of a hill. You can see the capitol in the distance, a sparkling jewel all the colors of the rainbow, with a brilliant spire that looks like a column of pure gold in the setting sun.

A closer look at your own surroundings reveals a grand villa several stories tall, built beside and on top of the hill next you. Servants scurry around cleaning and polishing things, apparently in expectation that the new lady of the house will arrive soon. You can see a broad area of marked dirt and stone meant for training, a stable near the edge of the house, and from what you can see of the back there's a garden and a pool.

Millie skips away down the path from the patio to the house, humming as she goes, and you pop your treat back into your mouth to crunch down on it, smirking at the expressions on your companion's faces.

“Welcome to my estate. You can call me 'your ladyship'. Now, who wants dinner?”

You start following Millie inside, smirking at the stunned expressions on their faces for a few moments.

“I was joking about the title thing. But seriously, this is my house. Come inside.”

You turn and walk through the door, pushing it open and stepping into a grand hall. It's likely some sort of ballroom, a broad, open space with a second floor balcony overlooking it. Sena, Gil and Kat follow behind you, each one staring as they go. Millie is in the center of the room dancing, spinning around and moving to her own beat. Her robes seem to lengthen slightly, flowing around her as she turns and jumps. Gil walks up beside you.

“So all this time... This is where we were going?”

You shake your head.

“I only just found out today. My father and mother were... more than I thought they were. This all belongs to me now.”

Sena smiles brightly.

“You're a dragon princess! That's amazing!”

Millie runs over to Sena and grins.

“Dragon countess! She's appointed nobility, not some stuffy old princess. Her dad earned that title, and now it's hers!”

Millie links hands with Sena and starts spinning with her, and before long Sena joins in, both spinning around and laughing. Kat whistles a bit.

“Must be nice being born into money. I mean, you grew up on a farm, right? So at least you're not some pampered baby.”

That one strikes a nerve with you for some reason, and after a moment you realize why. Growing up you had almost nothing. Your mother and father gave all this up to be together, and raised you without telling you, like they planned to forget the past ever happened. Another birthright denied. It's not that you don't understand why, and you're glad that you spent your childhood learning the value of hard work and being able to rely on yourself, but still.

You guys have two options. I can either draw the actual floor plan of the house which will take me a little bit, or you can have some room descriptions and a location list and settle for that. The estate is expansive, but you scarcelysee any of the servants inside. They always seem to be turning a corner or walking through a door when you see them. Before long you find yourself in the entry hall, an ostentatious affair with statues and another fountain, just in time to see Tirio walking in, greeting a servantwho promptly walks off.

You smirk and walk over to Tirio, offering your hand.

"Thank you, uncle."

He clasps your hand and shakes it firmly with a grin.

"So, who are all these people with you?"

You turn towards the others. Millie is all smiles, pushing another piece of candy into her mouth. Sena is munching on a piece already, having either stolen one or been given one by Millie. Gil is admiring the architecture, but you're pretty sure he's paying attention. Kat is admiring Gil, and is clearly not.

"These are my friends. Sena is one of the bravest girls I've ever met. She helped fight off blighted wolves when we were under attack, and held it together when she was bitten until we could get her healed. Gil, her brother, is cunning and sly. He's his sister's protector, and he's kept a constant vigil to keep her safe after they had to leave their home. Kat is an alchemist, and a damn clever one. Without her, Sena would be dead, and we wouldn't be here at all."

Tirio nods slowly.

"Sounds like you surround yourself with good people. Good. You'll need friends and allies at court. We can discuss what I wanted to tell you earlier at dinner if these are people you trust."

He gestures down the hall.

You decide to follow his lead, nodding to your friends and leading the charge to the dining room. You're greeted by the sight of the better part of a cow on the table, dismantled into every cut you can name and some you can't. There are roasted vegetables, bowls of fruit, bottles of wine and ale and beer in floating silver bowls full of ice, and a single servant in a suit at the door, towel over his arm and a small smile on his lips.

"Good evening, madam. Your dinner is served."

He bows almost impossibly low, arm extended to invite you in.

"We hope you find this meal to your liking. We've been working hard to impress you, and we hope the effort shows."

You head for the dinner table and sit at the chair at the end, pulling out the ornate seat yourself before the butler can and sitting down, letting him push it in for you. Tirio sits to your right, and Millie beside him, while Sena sits at your left, followed by Gil, then Kat. The servants appear from nowhere, loading your plate with food, filling your glass with ale and then vanishing again. You look at the forks and knives for a moment, and find yourself thankful that there's not the massive collection that you were anticipating. You slowly lift your glass as everyone else is served.

“I'd like to... propose a toast.”

You glance at Tirio, and he nods approvingly.

“To the dreams that led us here, to the future that awaits, and to friends and family.”

You take a gulp of the ale, and everyone else does the same. You sit down and take your first bite, and for a brief, beautiful moment, everything is wonderful. Good food, surrounded by friends and family, a new estate to watch over, and a title that gives you the leverage to find what you need for your quest. You don't notice that the room is getting warmer by the second until it's suddenly burning hot. You don't notice that everything is getting darker and dimmer. You feel the room tip sideways, and someone yells your name, and everything becomes black and burning. A familiar voice whispers into your ear, words that have no meaning, words you can barely hear, and suddenly you find yourself before Allegiset once more.
>>
“To family? How noble of you. But you didn't think to invite the guest of honor, your patron and most revered ancestor? Where is my seat at your table?”

He grins at you, molten eyes shimmering.

“You've been busy, I see. I thought I'd say hello and check in on you. You've made it to the capitol in one piece, I see. As promised, I will grant you a gift, seeing as you've found clues to what I asked you to seek. I had thought they would be kept here, but it seems you have more work to do. So tell me, dear daughter, what you wish for? Physical might? Intellect? More power? Or perhaps you seek something else altogether?”

“I need to know more. Before I gather more power, before I rage across these lands, I need to know my enemies. I need to know my allies.”

Allegiset nods slowly, and moves towards you.

“I will grant you access to the knowledge in your blood. I will let you see with eyes unclouded what mortal men cannot.”

You feel a sudden stabbing sensation and Allegiset vanishes from your view. You realize too late what has happened; he's rammed his claws into your eyes, and you can feel the trail of fire they've cut all the way to the back of your skull. You scream, and he removes his claws slowly. The burning subsides slowly, and your vision returns to you bit by bit. You can see after a few moments, and then, you can really see. There's something different about Allegiset as you look at him, some other aspect of him that you didn't notice before.

“With these eyes of gold you will behold the world as it truly is. And when you sit and meditate, you will see beyond the bounds of your physical body, perceiving the world as it was when your forebears walked it. I grant you the eyes of a dragon, and awaken you to memories of your bloodline. Try to be more careful with this one. A throat is easy to heal, but when you strain your mind, you'll find it's less forgiving. Enjoy your meal, daughter.”

He vanishes from your view as the burning subsides, and you awaken to find yourself face down in your dinner. Everyone has only just stood up from their chairs in response to you falling, as if it were only a moment ago.

“Sorry, I must have dozed off for a minute there... I didn't get much rest on the cart ride to the portal.”

You look at the others for a moment as they sit down, but they're all staring at you. Millie in particular, you notice, is grinning. Tirio hesitates before speaking.

“Your eyes... They... They weren't gold before, were they?”

Gil shakes his head.

“No, no they were not...”

You blink. The world shifts before your eyes and you feel something in your head shift into place. The whole room changes, just like Allegiset did. Millie glows brightly, as do the butlers and maids, and there's a fainter glow coming from Kat, Sena and Gil. Tirio looks exactly as he did before however. Millie smiles brightly at you.

“Now you see what I see~ Daddy, she's got the sight!”

You feel your eyes begin to sting a bit, and you try to relax and focus. You feel something shift again, and the strange glow goes away. Tirio looks surprised, and rubs his eyes a few times.

“And now they're back to normal... You guys saw it too, right?”

Kat nods slightly.

“I thought it was very pretty. Maybe it's a new magic trick?”

You take a bite of your steak and shrug.

“Maybe it's just a dragon thing. Look, I'm gonna keep eating, so you guys can do whatever you want to do. But for now I just want to eat, get some rest, maybe talk a little bit before bed, and then sleep. It's been a long day, we've all had a lot of stress and surprises, but for now I just want things to be normal for a bit.”

Everyone returns to their meals, though Tirio seems a little on guard now. The meal carries on in relative silence for a few minutes before Gil looks your way.

“I think we can all appreciate that you want your privacy, but you just freaked out everyone here except for Millie, who, no offense, isn't exactly a normal person. You have a strange vision in the woods that leads you out, and another that lets you breathe fire.”

Sena nudges him.

“Sing fire.”

He rolls his eyes.

“Whatever. Now you pass out for a second and suddenly you can make your eyes turn gold and gain 'the sight', whatever that is? I can't stay here if you plan on keeping what's going on with you a secret, and I won't put Sena in danger because you don't trust us.”

Tirio rises to his feet so fast that his chair wobbles.

“Realize who you're speaking to, boy. Kotijah is a member of the nobility here, as well as my niece. If something is going on, I believe she will tell you in due time. Just as she will tell me in due time.”

Tirio looks your way, his stern expression back once more.

Dragons have a kind of blood memory thing. I can look through the eyes of my ancestors, see what they saw. And back and back, beyond all of that, is an ancestor who I can speak to directly. He comes to me in visions and offers me power. It's how I got my firesinging, and how my eyes can change colors.”

You pick up your cup and take a sip.

“After dinner. When we finish our meals we'll head outside and I'll show you then. This is my new home, uncle. Can I at least enjoy a single meal here before we proceed?”

The butler appears beside you, smiling at Tirio.

“Indeed. I must sincerely apologize, sir, but as the new lady of the house she is currently in command of every member of staff. If you'll recall, we were hired by her father as well as yourself. You are fully aware of our capabilities and our devotion to this household.”

Tirio turns back to his plate with a nod.

“Which is why I won't be pushing this issue any further.”

The butler nods, smiles at you, and then leaves with a bow. You really should get on with seeing what's up with your staff before too long. Everyone returns to their meals, and after a little while Millie speaks up.

“So where is everyone going to live? Are you all just gonna stay with Kotijah?”

“They can stay here as long as they like. I don't mind. This place is huge.”

Sena smiles at you.

“Thank you. And I'm calling dibs on the room with the comfiest bed.”

Millie sticks out her tongue and grins.

“Too late, I called that one ages ago!”

Tirio chuckles and shakes his head.

“You called that room when I was in charge of this place, Millie. It's Kotijah's now, and she hasn't said you can stay here yet.”

Sena thrusts her fist into the air and smiles.

“Victory is mine!”

Millie jumps up onto the table, pointing an accusatory finger at Sena.

“You may have won this day, villain, but you won't get off so easily next time! The forces of good will triumph!”

You take another bite of your steak as you watch the exchange. You could watch these two all day and never get bored. Sena rises to her feet to retort.

“Good? You stand only for a lost empire! You have no respect for the new order of things!”

Gil looks like he's trying to contain his laughter, using his drinking glass to cover his mouth. Kat and Tirio, on the other hand, just look lost. The butler walks over to the table and clears his throat.

“No feet on the dinner table, Miss Millefiori. We've told you several times before, have we not?”

Millie leaps back into her chair and folds her arms, pouting.

“Fiiine.”

Sena returns to her food with a smile, and everyone else does the same. Before long everyone's plates are clear, and Tirio stands up.

“There's a courtyard this way. We can sit outside and have our dessert.”

He starts to walk off, and everyone else follows behind him. With a shrug you do the same. Your house, your rules, but he's still setting the pace. Maybe you'll have a word with him about it later. The courtyard is fairly large and encircled by chairs and hedges, with a path leading from it towards the rear of the house. Tirio takes a seat and turns to you.

“Ready when you are, Kotijah.”

You take a slow breath and face towards the center of the courtyard while everyone else takes their seats. Tirio wants to see your firesinging, and you intend to show him what you're capable of. You open your mouth to sing, and you feel a sudden jolt through your body. Memories that aren't your own begin to fill your head, memories of the words you've been singing. Little by little their meaning becomes more apparent to you.

As you start to sing, the words flow through you readily, but it's no longer just your desires that are expressed. You can bend the fire, shape it, tell it how to move and where to go, where to carry the heat you give it. Your throat aches, and as your vision clears you can see a serpent of fire rising up into the air before exploding into little motes of flame that rain harmlessly down upon you. Tirio applauds, and the others follow suit slowly. He rises to his feet, clapping louder, walking towards you before lowering his hands.

“Well, that at least proves who your mother was. Can you weaponize it at all, or is it just flashy and interesting to watch?”

You can't tell if it's Uncle Tirio or General Tirio asking that question, whether he wants to know for military purposes or for his own curiosity. And thinking about it now, you've yet to try to actually use it as a weapon.

We are going to be a benevolent tyrant. That means having slaves, but being concerned for their welfare too. And sometimes giving them orders they do not wish to complete for the benefit of the group.

You shake your head.

“I'm slowly learning control, bit by bit, but I can't use it as a weapon yet. Light campfire, sure, and seal wounds, but aside from giving someone a serious burn I'm not sure I can use it to fight.”

Tirio rests a hand on your shoulder.

“It's your life to live, but I have a recommendation for you. I have a few friends who would be happy to mentor you. You'll need someone to coach you on acting like a noble, at the very least. I also know a few people who would be willing to teach you how to use your sword better or train you in other combat arts. Firesinging is one thing, but every noble worth their salt has some skill or talent that they can impress people with. A voice coach might be wise since you've got a good voice. And I can send someone to teach you the basics of magic if you like. And I've no doubt that you'd be able to get them to teach your friends a few things as well.”

I would like to learn my own swordsmanship for a short time, learn on my own what style I feel comfortable with and then have someone more experienced help smooth it over and refine it. As for talent, common singing would be a waste of my voice, so I would rather endeavor to learn another instrument."
>>
“I'd like that. I'll need all the help I can get.”

Tirio nods a little and smiles.

“Well, it's been a lovely meal and a lovely chat, but I have to finish up a few things this evening before I can do anything else. I'll be back tomorrow and we can finish our little chat. I'll bring along my friends as well and we can write up a schedule as far as your tutoring. Come along, Millie.”

Millie leaps over to him with a little twirl, latching onto his back, already glowing a faint blue.

“Bye! Have a nice night, don't forget to write!”

They vanish before you can respond, leaving you standing there full of questions. Kat, Gil and Sena all walk over to you, and Kat grins.

You shake your head and smile.

“Not just yet. You guys go get settled in your rooms, I need to have a word with my staff.”

As you say that, the butler appears from nowhere, smiling softly and bowing.

“The others will be with us shortly, madam, once your friends are taken care of.”

Gil glances at Kat.

“I'd prefer my room to have a second bed in it for when Kat inevitably sneaks in to try to cuddle with me.”

Kat smirks slyly.

“What do you mean, try? I've been working on a new adhesive compound, you're not going anywhere.”

Gil opens and closes his mouth a few times before bolting away, Kat following behind him and shouting.

“I was joking! It dissolves after an hour!”

Sena looks at you for a few moments.

“Is love always like that?”

You don't really have an answer for that one, so you just shrug. Sena shrugs as well and walks away, leaving you alone with the butler.

“Now then, since we're alone, shall we speak openly and freely?”

His suit vanishes, replaced with robes similar to Millie's, except for their bold, red color. His eyes are open, and they burn like hot coals.

“I am Cenere, head butler of the Imidarius estate and present chief of staff. I have existed in this form for five centuries, though my lifespan in your terms has proven difficult to track. Suffice to say, I am very old, very powerful, and at your service.”

One by one, maids and butlers appear behind him, each opening their eyes to reveal various colors. Some have eyes like diamonds, others like fire, some glowing blue, some glowing gold, and on and on. Cenere bows low, and they all move in time with him.

“What do you desire to know, madam?”

“What are you, and why are you working as servants?”

Cenere straightens up and smiles a bit.

“We are elemental spirits, condensed from raw elemental energies into animate, sentient forms. I am pure fire, for instance. Some of the others are pure water, pure air or pure earth, with many hybrids in between. We owe our very existence to the wizard Celeon, who chose to break his spirit into shards in order to create a new form of life. We are all imbued with a measure of his power, which has grown slowly over time. As for why we serve, it is because we were born without purpose, and service provides us with that. We are treated well here in return for labors that, for us, are simple tasks.”

You give him a small nod and mull that over for a moment.

“Can you keep secrets?”

Cenere's smile widens ever so slightly.

“Secrets are such a human notion. We exist in order to serve this household, madam. If our service requires us to conceal information, then we will do so gladly.”

You slowly start to pace around Cenere, who simply stands there, his smile almost immovable, as though that were the only expression he was capable of making.

“And this is all of you then? I want to know who I have to work with.”

Cenere shakes his head.

“At present there are 43 members of staff in the courtyard. There are 37 attending to other tasks and duties currently, such as cleaning, assisting your companions and heating the building. 48 hybrids and 32 pure elements total. Several of the hybrids are unable to maintain a cohesive human-like form for very long, and so they remain out of sight for the most part.”

You contemplate asking him about your inheritance, but Tirio is coming back tomorrow and probably bringing Millie, and you're unsure if your servants would know about your wealth or anything not related to this building.
>>
“I'd like to celebrate with my friends tonight. Nothing too wild, just a drink or two. You're all welcome to attend and relax if you like.”

Cenere finally loses his smile.

“We're unable to derive pleasure from the act of relaxing, madam. Regardless of activity, we are always at the same level of energy unless we exert ourselves, and recharging is more of a chore than anything else since we must break objects down to reclaim lost elemental energies. Relaxation is boring. If you wish for us to enjoy ourselves, please, assign us tasks. Give us work, otherwise our minds will rot.”

She will likely give a list of herbs, I would like a portion of the gardens set aside so we can grow our own supply. Additionally, I would like some research done concerning my Firesinging. If it means going to the Grand Library, you are free to use my name. In addition, I will need a nice, long list of names of everyone in the Order of Scales. Full members only, though include the titles, just so I will recognize their names when I hear them. Tomorrow, before my family arrives, I will be wanting a full tour of the grounds and mansion. If you wish to concern yourselves overnight, you may work to make sure everything is completely swept, dusted, and fully presentable for inspection. That and the party preparations are the only things I will really expect finished today. Consider the rest on the 'to-do' list. I'll have more tasks as things progress, but for now that's all. Oh, and keep an eye out for intruders and visitors in the coming days. I suspect more than one noble will want to see if rumors of my arrival were true, and I'd rather not be caught at inopportune times."

You decide to give them some tasks to complete, rattling off a few things you think you'll need, like cleaning, preparing for the party later, and getting some books from the library that you can use to study your firesinging. Cenere nods and claps his hands twice, several maids and butlers vanishing, leaving only five more besides him.

“What are your normal chores like anyway?”

Cenere smiles softly.

“Cooking, cleaning, tending to the stables and the horses, keeping the house heated and the water running, tending to the gardens, keeping the grand crystal beneath the house charged with magic to maintain the protective shield, that sort of thing.”

You decide to let that last one go for the time being. You're starting to get a little worn thin on big surprises, and you'll probably hear all about it from Tirio tomorrow. Plus it's not like Cenere is going anywhere any time soon.

“Alright. Dismissed. Get to work, you lot.”

You clap your hands twice, and they vanish in a flash, save for Cenere who moves to the door, robes transforming back into a suit.

Cenere leads you towards the parlor, and along the way you find you can't contain the question any longer.

“What were you talking about before, with the crystal?”

Cerene lets out a polite little chuckle.

“Something your uncle devised. It uses elemental energies to diffuse and redirect any offensive spells back at their caster. This house is protected from outside attacks. He thought that your father might have earned some powerful enemies, and upon returning might need more than just sturdy walls to keep him safe.”

The parlor is, as expected, bigger than you thought it would be. Kat is reclining on a sofa with a glass of wine and her pipe, Gil is nursing a mug of beer not too far away, and Sena is trying to seem more grown up by drinking some sort of fruit punch from a wine glass that, frankly, is fancier than Kat's. The moment you step into the room, two maids appear, one offering you wine and liquor the other offering ale, beer and mead. You decide on a beer for the time being and head for a nearby seat.

“To us.”

You lift your mug and down the contents, smiling a bit. Kat takes a long drag of whatever she's smoking, blowing out a perfect smoke ring.

“To us indeed. How about a game to pass the evening along? We could always play truth or dare, get to know each other better.”

Gil smiles wryly at her.

“The last time we played that you got everyone in trouble with the town watch...”

Sena sips her drink and swirls it in her glass.

“A game sounds fun. What do you want to play, Kotijah.”

“Truth or dare sounds fun, sure.”

Kat immediately sits up and points a finger at Gil.

“Truth or dare!”

Gil grumbles a bit and finishes his drink.

“Truth, why not.”

Kat chuckles and walks over to him, sitting on his lap.

“Who do you like more, me or Kotijah?”

Gil blushes a bit.

“This is a loaded question. What if I don't like either of you?”

Kat jabs his nose with her pipe.

“You're being evasive. If you don't answer quick I'll think up an even better question.”

Gil groans and closes his eyes.

“You, alright? I like you more than Kotijah.”

You look over at Kat.

“Got any potions or elixirs kicking around?”

Kat nods and pulls out a hip flask.

“Right here. Why?”

You turn back to Sena.

“I dare you to drink that.”

Sena pales a bit, and Kat blinks, then grins widely.

“Test subject~”

She tosses the flask to Sena, with Gil trying and failing to grab it in midair. Sena looks at the flask, then at you.

“This doesn't seem safe...”

She unscrews the cap and sniffs it, before taking a sip, and then a longer swig. Kat looks on eagerly, while Gil looks panicked. Sena finishes off the flask and hiccups.

“Well, I don't feel any dif-”

That's as far as she gets before the flask tumbles from her fingers. She starts to cough, black liquid pouring from her lips, and she hacks a few times to get the last of it out. Her eyes glow softly and she wobbles, panting, before slumping into her chair. Her eyes slowly turn red, and you'd swear that her canines were lengthening into fangs.

“I-I feel so thirsty all of a sudden...”

There's a sudden jolt through her body and she yelps, her teeth receding to their normal length and her eyes returning to normal. She looks thoroughly shaken by the experience. Kat frowns a bit.

“Y-Yeah, just... I'll be alright...”

She looks over at Gil and smiles a little.

“Truth or dare?”

Gil hesitates.

“...Dare. Are you sure you're alright?”

Sena nods again.

“Mhmm, I'm fine. And... I dare you to kiss Kat. On the lips.”

Kat immediately straddles Gil and grabs him by the collar.

“Well, if she insists, then pucker up~”

Gil squirms and thrashes about, eyes wide and face bright red.

“This is exactly the kind of thing I was trying to avoid!”

Sena giggles a little bit and turns to you while Kat latches onto Gil and forces him into a kiss.

“Since they're probably gonna sleep in the same room, and I don't want to sleep alone, can I stay with you? I'll just sleep on the floor or something, I just don't like not being around someone else when I'm asleep.”

Gil watches her walk out, surprised by the response and looks to you and Sena for some indication of what to do. You jerk your head towards the door and glare at him, and he takes that as a vote to follow after her, which he does. Sena frowns a bit and looks at you.

“Should we follow them and make sure they're alright? I don't think either of them will handle this well...”

You could pursue them, you suppose. Or you could let it play out. You can't make out everything they say, but you hear most of it, enough to fill in the gaps yourself.

“Hey.”

“...Oh. Hi. I didn't think you'd... Nevermind.”

“Didn't think I'd what?”

“You've never been the bravest sort, Gil. Last time things got too heated between us you got scared and avoided me for two weeks.”

“Half of that time was spent trying to help you undo being a cat...”

“And the other half?”

“I was nervous, alright? Things were going really well and then I messed up.”

“People make mistakes, Gil.”

“Not like me, Kat. I messed things up with you, I didn't see the carpenter leering at Sena all that time, I let her get hurt by that wolf, I-”

“If you bring up your parents like it was your fault, Gil...”

“Are you saying it wasn't?”

“I'm saying you were five and didn't know what was happening.”

“Like that makes it any better... Look, just... Kotijah was right when she called me a coward, alright? You were... You were right. I was just going to leave you up here to cool off because I didn't know what to say and Kotijah kinda pushed me to do it, but... I don't know where to start.”

“You could start by telling me how you actually feel about me, Gil. I've been in love with you for a while, it'd be nice to know if all our fooling around meant anything.”

“Kat, for the past few years you've been treating me like a toy. You always act so childish sometimes, it makes it hard to tell what's serious and what isn't. I like you, a lot, but until now I've never had a real indication of how you feel... I need to think...”

You sit and wait for Gil to do or say something dumb, something to prompt you into action. Instead he just stands there, looking out at the night sky. Kat taps her pipe against the railing gently, and sighs.

“Nothing, huh?”

“I'm sure I'll think of something eventually.”

“Mhmm.”

“I've still got time.”

“You're running out though.”

“What do you want me to say? That I love you and I don't care that you've been catty and childish this whole time?”

“Not in those words, but sure.”

“Kat, I can't just forget about what's been going on and how you've treated me. How do I know that right now you're being honest with me? That this isn't just another prank?”

“...You got it.”

“Huh?”

“You caught on. I'm just playing another game with you, Gil. I'm surprised it took you so long to work it out.”

“...Kat? Are you...? Hey now...”

He moves towards Kat, who shoves him away roughly.

“You're a fucking moron, Gil.”

“A moron who cares about you.”

“Still a moron.”

“I didn't dispute it.”

“Yeah, well... Fuck you.”

“Scathing.”

“Shut up!”

“Make me.”

Kat throws a punch at Gil, and he just stands there and takes it. There's blood dripping down his face from his nose, but he doesn't even flinch. Sena, you notice, idly licks her lips at the sight.

“You... You were supposed to move...”

“Moron, remember?”

Gil wipes the blood off with his sleeve and pulls Kat in for a brief kiss.

“If you're being serious, then... Then let's work on this. Together. Not start over, just... Make it work.”

Kat nods slightly.

“Alright... just... Let's get that looked at... Do you need some ice?”

“Desperately. My head is ringing from that one.”

You slip away with Sena at your side and return to the parlor for the time being. Sena slips off the cloak and returns to her chair.

“So, should we sleep now? I mean, I am getting kinda tired...”

You find yourself agreeing with her. It's getting late, and given that you've spent most of the day running around the capitol signing papers or rummaging around in the library, you want to rest your eyes. You give her a nod and Sena yawns softly as she stands back up. You head off for the master suite, handing your cloak to a maid who appears just in time to take it from you. Sena heads for the bed and attempts to flop onto it, only to be stopped by another maid at the last second.

“Outdoor clothes are for outside, not for sleeping in. I'm afraid I'll have to ask you to change into something else. We have a selection to choose from, including pajamas of all sorts. I personally guarantee your comfort.”

The maid turns to you and smiles cheerfully.

“As the lady of the house you may sleep as you like. Shall I show you to the wardrobe as well?”

You decide to get changed, sorting through the various outfits when you get to the wardrobe. You decide that frilly underthings aren't really your style for sleepwear, or anything really, and settle on a set of red silk pajamas. You note, with a degree of satisfaction, that at the maid's touch the red fabric adopts a faint scale-like pattern. Sena, on the other hand, opts for a pink wool onesie with buttons down the front, heading into the next room to change. The maid vanishes to give you privacy and you get changed.

The silk feels nice on your skin, a lot more pleasant than your traveling clothes to be sure. You'll have to get used to wearing new clothes around the city, and that might end up including the dreaded skirt. You hate skirts with a passion. Other people make them look good, but you don't like how they look on yourself. You make a vow to wear pants or shorts or something similar any time that you're forced into a dress or skirt, so that you can kick people in the face or run around without fear. If you have to look and feel silly, you can at least have your dignity while laying the smack down on people.

Sena walks back into the room and grabs a pillow off the bed, curling up on the floor with it and yawning softly as she makes herself comfortable. You walk over slowly and concentrate, focusing your gaze on her and trying to get your “sight” to kick in. Just a quick examination to make sure nothing is wrong...

You feel the change come over you; you don't need anyone telling you your eyes are gold, you know that they are. Sena's body is full of a strange glow, focused around her mouth and stomach. It's not black, more of a soft gray color, but it's definitely different than what was there before. You can't quite place your finger on how though. Before when you first acquired the sight you didn't see anything odd or unusual, but then, how would you know? You deactivate your sight before your eyes start to burn and climb into bed, slipping under the covers.

You resolve to talk to Kat in the morning. You hope that Sena will make it through the night, and whisper softly to the house staff to keep her out of trouble. You see a crowd of maids and butlers appear before you, each smiling and bowing, and drift off into sleep.

>>
