Hey guys! New week, new thread! However, just as a word of warning, I CANNOT guarantee that I will not be playing some PHANTOM PAIN in between updates!

Twitter: https://twitter.com/MercCommand

Archive:

Other Quests: http://pastebin.com/KWGJCSbT

RULES AND STATS: http://pastebin.com/5q9fPFjz

You are KARLA WEISS, a Belkan fighter pilot looking to carve your own place in the skies!

You're still mulling over that odd dream you had last night as you set your Morgan on autopilot to the coordinates that OB had provided to you in order to fight in their little gauntlet of theirs. Just behind you, you can see the transponders of Wolf and his F-22 team trailing behind you at a leisurely distance.

And even farther back was the beacon for the insertion helo that was carrying Jager and his rescue team, ready to whisk Milly away if needed.

"You've been awfully quiet so far." Wolf chimes in. "You nervous?"

"Of course I am." You try to say in a lighthearted tone. However, you were still very much aware that so much could go wrong on this mission. Maybe Milly was already dead. Maybe Wolf or Jager would get spotted. Maybe his was a big elaborate trap.

Hell, this whole setup was a trap from the get go.

"I mean, I'm practically flying into a big trap with a target painted on my head." You continue. "What's there NOT to be worried about?"

"Well, there's no worries when I'm here to watch your back!" Wolf laughs. "Look I know you'd probably feel better having your own squadron here, but trust me, you're good hands with me and my team."

"Well, I wouldn't have picked you in any other case, right?" You point out.

"Haha, that's true!" Wolf laughs. "Anyways, you say the word and me and my guys will come charging in like the cavalry!"

"Hopefully not before we do our thing." Jager grunts. "Extractions under fire are never fun."

"By they way," You say, deciding to change the subject and switching over to a private channel, "how are things going with Lara right now?"

"Aaaah, well, I guess we're still at square one." Wolf says, a bit abashed. "You know, I tried all the regular hints, asking out to drinks and stuff like that. She's either not interested or doesn't get the message. I can't really tell."

"Yeah, that is kind of a problem with her, right?" You chuckle. "On the one hand, I'm pretty sure she loves the sky more than any living thing. On the other, she IS pretty dense and singleminded when it come to flying, so i can definitely picture her missing the point."

"Are my prospects bleak?" Wolf sighs.

"I dunno, really." You respond. "I mean, she doesn't HATE you or anything. That's Amy's job."

"Ha, of course." Wolf grumbles. You even see his Raptor drop a few thousand feet as if it was deflating like him. "So what should I do? Just stick with it, or do something more direct?"

"Well, the answer is simple!" You say happily. "You gotta force your way in like the man you are!"

"Really?" Wolf asks, his tone skeptical. "Is it that simple?"

"Of course!" You confirm. "The only way to get through a girl that dense is to hit her with a statement that's denser than her head."

"So, granite?"

"Maybe depleted uranium."

"Can you just give it to me straight?" Wolf wails, exasperated."

"Okay, okay!" You laugh. "The secret is..."

"Yes...?" Wolf says as he gets drawn further in.

"...you gotta hold her hand and confess gently in her ear that you love her!" You explain.

"No. Noooooooooo. No way. I can't do that!" Wolf stammers.

"All right, your funeral." You say simply. "Just think on it."

Before Wolf can come up with a retort, Loki butts in on the squadron channel.

"All right everybody, Valkyrie is nearing the AO. Wolf Team, hold position and standby. Hunter Squad, fly in at low altitude to evade detection!"

"Loki, do you see anything on radar yet?" You ask.

"Nothing yet. There's lots of mountains and hills north of the Graveyard. OB could conceivably be using the terrain to mask their approach."

"Wonderful."

"You better hurry." Samantha advises. "OB won't like to be kept waiting long."

You decide to just go straight in and get this over with as you open up your throttle.

"All right, I'm going in." You say.

"Good luck, Valkyrie." Loki says.

As you head towards the rendezvous, you take one last chance to look over your Morgan. Smokey and his crew had slaved away over the night to make sure it was ready for today, and it showed. It still had the original Valkyrie paint scheme, with the feathered wings and blue/white coloring. However, the right wing was covered with red bloodstains. Fake, of course, but the effect looked pretty damn realistic, even up close. You had to remind yourself to compliment Smokey on his work once you got back.

"I see you've arrived." You hear a familiar voice as you see a contact wink on your radar screen, the IFF identifying it as "Babylon".

"Alone, as promised." You grunt. "So where's Milly?"

"Look down." Bablyon says. "They should be coming up on your radar soon."

Your radar pings with a new contact, far below you. You roll your Morgan to get a better look, and see a Hind orbiting over the Graveyard, You squint and manage to see Milly sitting precariously at the edge of the side door, flanked on both sides by a pair of guards.

"Not exactly my personal preference, but the higher ups were insistent to have this way. To keep you from doing anything funny." Babylon says distastefully.

"Oh boy, this is going to be tough." Jager frowns. "I was expecting a ground extracting. Getting out of a moving helo is an entirely different thing."

"So it's impossible?" You ask.

"I never said that. Just more complicated." Jager grunts. "I got a plan. It'll take some time to set up, so all you need to do is distract them. Be flashy like you always are."

Looking at every other superplane (i.e. Wyvern, Fenrir, Falken, etc.), they're obviously built for stealth whereas the Morgan looks like it's meant to fight a battle or three.

Also, on another note: Why not have Jaeger only go if it looks like OB won't be letting Milly go?

What happens if we WIN *before* Jaeger and the extraction team pulls off their heist? Should we then just let OB keep their end of the deal and free Milly?

That is to say: Should we have Jaeger delay the actual rescue attempt until we've won?

Keep it as a back-up in case OB don't keep to their promise.

If we CAN deal with things just by flying, I think we should do that.

Only have Jaeger go in if OB don't keep their promise.

What does everybody else think?
>>
>>42300365
Wouldn't it be too late by that point?
Jaeger needs time to prepare, and it's far too easy and quick for one of Milly's guards to just pull a gun and shoot her in the back of the head if we win.

Why discard the hostage when you can just leave instead? That way you still have a useable hostage. If you're breaking the deal, might as well do it in the way that's most useful for you.

Also, if they do that, then that helicopter is going to be shot down by an angry Morgan shortly after they shoot or throw out Milly, so. They'd be giving the lives of 2 or 3 people for nothing.

Infantry, even special forces, can't do standby like that. They need time to set up and move in, since they move foot-fast or helo-fast rather than jet-engine-fast. They need to deploy and operate with the expectation that they WILL be the difference between Milly living and Milly getting her brains blown out.

http://www.policeone.com/SWAT/articles/2856585-10-tactical-considerations-for-a-bus-assault/

Not a bus, no, but similar. Even while negotiations are ongoing, a Hostage Rescue Team will be prepping and deploying. If the negotiations work, fine, but the HRT team acts like they are the single hope that hostage has.

We don't want to jack around with the grunts right now. Jager isn't dumb enough to move unless he has an assured extraction, and if we're fast enough, we'll have won by the time he's in position to do that.

"Can do. Good luck." You say.

"Roger that." Jager nods, and starts speaking again, right before the mic cuts out. "All right, boys! It's time to pull off one for the history books!"

You're not sure whether that was encouraging or not.

Meanwhile, Babylon continues to circle the area, maintaining opposite position from you. This close and with no obstructions, you can see his Morgan now was painted up in a golden yellow scheme, with a few red highlights.

"Nice paintjob." You compliment.

"Same to you." Babylon replies happily. "I can see you've done a little work on yours, too! I find the red wing very eyecatching. I see you know your history!"

Well, he was cheerful as always, same as when you first encountered him in what seemed like an eternity ago.

Heh. History and legend.

If I remember correctly, way back when Karla was actually asked what she thought about Pixy... she didn't answer with "He was a traitor" or anything like that; she just said "No comment". A bit of an interesting answer. Maybe she just didn't agree with his views, but still admired the man for his piloting skill...

If we're talking about the past/history: how about we also ask him about his favored/most admired aces?

Or even just why he's flying? Karla for instance just loves to fly -- more or less...

(Shame that only Babylon is the chatty one. Lancer took it personally with the loss of his wingmate. Tombstone is... quite and probably-a-dick.)

You decide to try and draw things out with banter, if only to distract him for just a bit longer so Jager can get into position. You key your radio up.

"So, nice weather we got out here, huh?" You ask innocently.

"Trying to delay things?" Babylon chuckles. "I thought the mighty Valkyrie wasn't afraid of a fight?"

"I'm not, but there really aren't a lot of opportunities to just talk, you know? Get to know your enemy better?" You retort.

"Aaaaah, I guess you have a point there!" Babylon asks. There's then a pause. You guess he's getting another transmission, most likely from his superiors to get things moving. You could only imagine what was going on between them. "All right, how about a compromise, then? One question, and then we go."

"I don't have to give anything?" You wonder.

"Ha, we already know plenty about you." Babylon laughs. "And just a word of warning, I can't guarantee I'll actually answer what you ask! OPSEC, after all."

Well, he probably had a point there. So now you just had to figure out what to ask him.

"Oh... well... I wasn't expecting THAT." Bablyon says, surprised. "Well, if you truly must know... well, you can just call me Gilliam, or Gil for short. Kinda embarrassing really."

"Not at all!" You try and assure him. "And for the record, my name's Karla."

"Heh, pretty name. It would be a shame to shoot down a pretty pilot like you."

"Oh really now?" You grin evilly. "Why don't you come and try me?"

"Enemy fighter is beginning combat maneuvers!" Loki wars as you see the blip representing Bablyon suddenly pick up speed.

"Yes, I'm aware of that, Loki." You groan as you push down on your throttle, feeding extra fuel into your Morgan's hungry engines. Currently, you were circling around the graveyard, trying to get inside the turn or behind the other. Now, you didn't doubt Smokey's word when he said he souped up your Morgan as much as he could with what he had, but you're not sure what extent Bablyon may have upgraded his bird, if at all.

If there was one thing the Morgan excelled at, it was leveraging its extreme maneuverability. You kick your plane into a high G turn in an attempt to get inside Babylon's own turn. You feel yourself being pressed back into your seat as if a giant weight had been planted on you. However, you grit your teeth and try to bear it.

And just like that, your Morgan performs a near 180 degree change in direction in an eyeblink. The move is sudden enough that he shouldn't have enough time to counter.

Hopefully.

Unfortunately, Babylon somehow does manage to react quick enough to your little trick, immediately going into a heavy power climb since he knows you've burned off too much energy to pull off the turn. There's no way you'd be able to catch him in the climb. However, you couldn't let him go unmolested. Well, it was a good thing you were packing QAAMs. The super maneuverable missiles would prove extremely helpful in one on one matchups like these. You get a solid missile lock on the climbing Morgan and pull the trigger. Three missiles, one QAAM and two normal, detach from your Morgan's wings and soar away.

You watch as the three missiles streak off, chasing after Babylon as his plane tries to desperately climb and clamber for altitude. Unfortunately, the QAAM you fired can't keep up and falls short, dropping from the sky. Fortunately, your other two missiles manage to maintain lock and chase after Babylon's Morgan.

Unfortunately for him, rockets were faster than jet engines, and your missiles immediately focus on the Morgan's oversized engines. You see dual explosions, and watch as one of Babylon's engines flare out and a good chunk of its left wing fall off.

"Aw nuts. Looks like you got me." You hear Babylon cough.

As you watch, you see Babylon's Morgan, unable to sustain itself on one engine and one wing, falls into a death spiral. You see an ejection seat fire, but before you can get a better look, another contact lights up. You turn your head to see a blue and black Morgan swooping it, its radar and weapons hot.

"This is for all my men you killed." You hear Lancer growl as he launches a pair of missiles at you.

You don't even bother waiting for a positive target lock. You knew that this close, it didn't even really matter. Both you and Lancer close in, missiles streaking in at each other. Two of your missiles manage to get hits, exploding on their proximity fuses and shower Lancer's fuselage with shrapnel. However, his missiles similarly manage to trigger their sensor fuses, and your Morgan shakes as missile shrapnel punches through the thin skin of your craft. Almost immediately, damage warnings shriek as hydraulic, electric, and coolant lines are cut and frayed. You glance back to see that your tailfins were also chewed up, looking more like swiss cheese than actual control surfaces.

>-3 hp
>9 hp remains

However, the damage was relatively minor. Your Morgan was still in flying condition.

You finally get into the last stage of your head on pass, gun range. Both you and Lancer let off a burst, but only you hit, running a line of ragged holes down his right wing.

Finally, the both of you pass each other like moving freight trains. You quickly check your radar and note that Lancer was still active and trying to turn to reengage. You wonder if you should do the same, though with the damage your Morgan suffered, high g loads might just make things worse.

Your other option would be to climb to get a height advantage on him, but that could leave you vulnerable to missiles, depending on how fast Lancer is able to pull off his turn.

Been hit by missiles enough, I think.

Plus, "shooting missiles at the guy trying to altitude" is exactly how we nailed Babylon.

The Morgan should be able to handle a tight turn.

You need to get some altitude, and fast. You nose up your Morgan and hit your afterburners as you try to claw for every meter of altitude you can manage. Memeories of Sand Island flash through your vision as you do so, but you try to shake them out.

And then the predicted missile warning whines as Lancer tries to get a bead on your plane.

You close your eyes and clench your teeth in preparation for the inevitable hit, but it never arrives. You see Lancer's missiles streak off into the sunset, unable to find any target to lock on to. You then level out your Morgan, now with the height advantage. Now you could use gravity as your ally in taking down Lancer-

"Karla, do you read?" Jager voice finally appears again.

"Yeah, I'm still alive." You grunt. "Took you long enough!"

"Sorry, we busy setting things up." Jager replies. "I got a sniper with a long .50 ready to go. One round in the engines and that Hind is going down.

"You're going to shoot it down!?" You gasp.

"Uh, not really SHOOT DOWN, just, erm, force them into a controlled crash landing." Jager tries to explain. "We need you to distract them by doing a low altitude, high speed pass near them. as a distraction. You think you can do that?

"I'll do whatever it takes." You assure him. "When do you need me to do it?"

"Whenever is convenient for you." Jager replies. "But uh, I think the sooner the better. We can see the dogfight from down here and your plane is picking up some serious damage."

"Aw, are you really that worried?" You smile.

"Of course. You and that plane are very expensive investments." Jager says matter of factly.

He's worried about our plane picking up damage? Then better avoid extra damage.

If his concern was about how our plane was picking up damage, then it's a matter of making it safer for us.

In which case, we handle Lancer first.

I mean hell, we JUST got altitude on the guy -- there's no need to waste that.

We should use our height advantage NOW and finish him.

THEN we can swing by the chopper.

Well, Lancer was a secondary concern, anyways. Right now, you needed to focus on saving Milly so you could get the hell out of here. You could always deal with Lancer later.

"All right Jager, get ready. I'm going for it." You warn.

"Roger that." Jager acknowledges. "We'll be standing by.

Taking a deep breath, you push down on your stick to put your Morgan into a steep dive.

You dive down like an eagle hunting a pigeon, wings unfurled and claws ready. However, unlike said bird of prey, you target wasn't to kill your quarry, but merely scare it. Your Morgan goes shrieking past the Hind, buffeting it with the shockwave of your craft as it passes by and and actually briefly sending it out of control as the pilot reflexively maneuvers away from your passing. The Hind then pauses for a critical moment as it tries to correct its course.

And that's when Jager's sniper takes the shot.

As you pull back up, you can see black smoke leaking from the Hind's engines and it begins to lose altitude as the pilot attempts an autorotation landing.

Now it was all up to Jager.

"Clever play." You hear Lancer growl. "But it won't do you any good. You're not getting out of here alive."

Well shit, it looks like Lancer genuinely did want you dead.

"Well, I'm sorry to hear that." You say somewhat regretfully. "But I intend to get out of this alive."

"So be it." Lancer grunts as he speeds toward you.

However, before he has a chance to do anything, a bright blue beam of light sweeps across the sky, slicing his Morgan in two.

"You bastard!" You hear Lancer scream before being drowned out by static as his stricken Morgan falls out of the sky.

"New contact, new contact!" Loki yelps. "Enemy aircraft, unknown type! Valkyrie, get out of there!"

"Valkyrie! Valkyrie! What's going on?" Wolf shouts.

However, you're too transfixed by the black fighter that zips across the burning sky where Lancer used to be. It... it resembled a Morgan, yet it looked different, as well. Not to mention insanely fast and packing a large energy weapon. Just what the hell was this thing?

"Who the hell are you?" You ask over an open channel.

All you get is a blast of what sounds like corrupted machine code read aloud as a reply. Wincing in pain, you immediately shut off the radio.

What the hell was going on?!

Like hell we're going to just LEAVE. Besides -- if nothing else, this guy will probably take the chance to strafe the downed helicopter.

Oh no! Lancer was shot d--yeah, no, I can't finish that. I don't have the heart.

I hope he managed to bail out in time. Same for Babylon actually.

>>42303916

It does sound like Tombstone, doesn't it? After all, the guy's previous incarnation was known for being a teamkilling asshole.
>>
>>42303993
But why did it kill lancer then?
>>
that it fired on lancer implies that this is an autonomous drone thats left over from the last war. either it only woke up recently, or there's a fully automated base for it somewhere. if it's the latter we can safely conclude that at some point during the closing stages of the last war belka somehow replaced all of these scientists with wizards who could conjure wonders from the future.
>>
>>42304066
because Tombstone wants to kill us and won't let anyone get in the way, like he's always acted.
>>
>>42304108
You really haven't read this quest before have you, last thread combined with what we know of tombstone makes perfect sense for him to act this way, even when he's mostly machine.
>>
>>42304066

See:
>>42304058
>the guy's previous incarnation was known for being a teamkilling asshole.

There are 3 main aces in One Belka, and we've faced two. Freaky dream spirit PJ told us that Tombstone wasn't as gone as we thought.

So, my guess is this is either Tombstone himself making a personal appearance, or via a COFFIN system or whatever technological wizardry is available to Ace Combat.
>>
>>42304261
>>the guy's previous incarnation was known for being a teamkilling asshole.

And by previous incarnation, I meant the previous quest in which a version of Tombstone showed up. He was a dick.

I don't know if Tombstone as an idea originally comes from anywhere else though.
>>
>>42304281
his current incarnation in this quest is also a team killing asshole, as he was first introduced to Karla as being ruthless and killing teammates when they get in the way of his kill.
>>
>>42304250
I don't think his handlers would accept a weapon that would fire unprovoked on there own forces. there are degrees of team killing, and while catching you own men in AOEs is sometimes tolerated simply shooting down an ally for no reason usually gets you put down.
>>
>>42304311
You really need to go and reread the threads where Tombstone is featured, seriously you are way out of touch as that is exactly what Tombstone does.
>>
>>42304327

Well to clarify: this is apparently exactly the reputation Tombstone had in Valkyrian Mercs Quest 2.

There wasn't too much information to go on in Ace Combat Quest -- but it's pretty much assumed that he's just like he was in VMQ 2.
>>
>>42304362
>There wasn't too much information to go on in Ace Combat Quest
Uhh when we were first warned about him being in the same theater as us we got a decent briefing on him being the giant team killing asshole he is.
>>
>>42304362
I see. still say if the plane is undead tombstone its handlers wouldn't let it fire on friendlies.

he's probably going to be a recurring boss, but I doubt its this specific boss.
>>
>>42304384
>Uhh when we were first warned about him being in the same theater as us we got a decent briefing on him being the giant team killing asshole he is.
