The day of the tournament's second round has come. You and your team stand in the stadium, listening to the jeers of a demonic crowd who want nothing more than to see you die.

Across the ring, your foes stand waiting. Team Sanal has gathered, and look back at you as you look at them. Their leader is a large, hairy creature with a lion's head, complete with a mane. At his side stands a fat creature that looks pretty human, and seems to be perpetually drooling. A large man carrying a colossal hammer stands behind him. A woman who looks very much like Kasai, though with longer hair and closed robes stands at his other side. And finally, a man with spikey hair and a beaded necklace stands beside the woman.

From the ring, Koto calls to both teams. "Captains, step into the ring!"

You pull yourself up, and limp to the center, meeting the lion creature there.

"What do you say to one on one battles?" the creature rumbles in a deep voice. "The first team to three victories wins."

"Deal," you tell him.

"Alright folks, a best of five, one on one series of matches has been decided on!" Koto announces as you and Sanal exit the ring.

Bruce hops up and walks towards the center, where he is met by the man with the hammer. The hammer-wielding creature stands at least twice as tall as your friend, and seems to be wearing some light armor.

A glow surrounds Bruce as he stands before his imposing foe, and the crowd cheers for the hammer-wielder to smash him into paste.

"From team Luke, we have Bruce!" Koto tells the crowd. "From team Sanal, we have Tuher!"

"Alright, big guy, let's see what you're made of!" Bruce says, the glow becoming brighter as he drops into a fighting stance.

"Let the match begin!" Koto calls.

Bruce rushes forward, throwing a strong punch at the man's gut. But, whether due to the armor or the man's strength, Bruce's punch doesn't even make him flinch.

Tuher backhands Bruce, throwing him off his feet and sending him slamming onto his back on the other side of the ring. Bruce picks himself back up, his glow turning orange and growing a bit more intense.

Slowly, he moves back towards Tuher, and the massive demon swings his hammer. Bruce jumps over it, and punches the demon in the face, sending him staggering back a step.

As Bruce lands, however, the demon swings his hammer again. And, this time, your friend has time only to block. The hammer slams into his arms, throwing him back and sending him sliding out of the ring.

He curses as he picks himself back up, and you quickly see that his left arm has been broken.

"I'd stay out of the ring if I were you," Aalgan tells him.

"Shut up," Bruce snaps, his glow turning red as he hops back into the ring.

A scythe is only viable as a weapon in two ways, either you try to impale someone on the tip of the blade or you make pulling motions towards yourself with it.

Neither of those are good for AoE.

Fuck off. There is a reason the scythe was a farmer's tool and not a weapon of war.

A bardiche would be far better, or a bigass sword.

Chains are also not an effective weapon, no, Infamous 2 is not a good example.

>tfw even in anime scythes aren't used in a way that would actually make contact with the blade proper

You guys remember Soul Caliber 3, I believe?

With Zalasamel or whatever his name was?

He used a scythe in a feasible way.

Doesn't have anything to do with realism, its about the fact that people aren't using it in a way that works even in anime.

Unless they have the inverse edge sharpened, which they usually never specify.

Also the moment you start using a scythe a bunch of edgefags show up.

You continue watching, advising Bruce to use speed to his advantage.

Your friend rushes forward, stopping and jumping back to avoid a swing from his foe's hammer. As he lands, Tuher swings the hammer again, and Bruce ducks beneath it, rushing forward and letting out a yell as he throws an uppercut at his foe's jaw.

The punch connects, and once more Tuher staggers back. You see annoyance on his face as he slams the hammer downward on Bruce, who reaches out and catches the handle, the glow surrounding him becoming brighter and more intense as he struggles against his opponent.

The two remain locked in a tug of war for nearly thirty seconds, Bruce's glow steadily becoming more and more intense, until finally, with a yell, he wrenches the massive weapon from Tuher's grip. He tosses it into the air and catches it, bringing it down to slam on his foe's head.

Tuher steps to the side, barely managing to avoid being hit. With a yell, he kicks at Bruce's face, once more throwing your friend off of his feet, and forcing him to release his grip on the hammer.

Rushing forward, Tuher grabs the hammer and swings it upward, hitting Bruce and sending him flying high into the air above the ring. Your friend plummets to the ground out of bounds, landing right in front of the stadium wall and falling unconscious.

"Bruce is out of the ring!" Koto calls. "I'll begin the count! One! Two!"

"It doesn't look like he'll be getting back up," Kara observes.

"The fool should have given up when he had the chance," Aalgan comments.

Well, the entire blade of something typically is a blade, that does not mean the entirety is sharp. That's why I specified the outer edge being sharp. And usually it isn't that they are using an explicitly magic item, either.

It's a poor argument when you have to fall back on "magic".

But honestly, with skill and against a single opponent a scythe could work.

As long as your attacks are all hook attacks and pulls/draw cuts or just impaling people.

But it ain't an AoE weapon effectively, and armor would stop it rather reliably.

If you use a scythe the way it would be AoE people would just have to backstep, jump, or duck. It doesn't have a particularly long reach because of the angle the blade comes out at.

I've seen it quite a few times, people get edgy because "scythe, hurr durr Grim Repoor" and act like Death himself (or at least, try. Poorly. It's disgusting.)

The fact that the word "reaping" is what you do with a scythe, and given word association, yeah, it tends to go that way.

You're just lucky you've never met the edgefags, I guess.

"Bruce isn't out yet," you assure them.

"Four! Five!" Koto continues.

"Sure seems like he's out to me," Aalgan comments as the crowd cheers for Tuher.

"Six! Seven!"

"You can stop counting!" you hear from behind you.

Turning around, you see Bruce, the red aura around his body nearly blinding now, back on his feet. He rushes past you and leaps back into the ring as the crowd calls for his blood.

Tuher rushes forward, swinging his hammer at Bruce once more. Bruce reaches out and catches the head of the hammer, spinning and lifting it into the air. Tuher loses his grip and goes flying into the air, coming down out of bounds.

Bruce flips the hammer, and as Tuher descends, he throws it, the head slamming into the hammer's owner and sending him crashing into the stadium wall with enough force to leave him stuck in it. Tuher groans and falls unconscious as the hammer falls to the ground in front of him.

Bruce walks out of the ring as Koto begins the count, and by the time she reaches ten, Tuher has not moved a muscle.

"Winner, Bruce!" Koto calls, resulting in angry shouts from the crowd.

Bruce strolls past you, his glow still incredibly intense as he walks over to his unconscious foe. He grips the massive hammer, lifting it above his head, and for a moment, you're sure he's about to kill Tuher. But, he slings it over his shoulder before turning back and coming to your side.

Back at the ring, the woman from the other team steps up, her gaze locked on Kasai, who stares right back at her.

"I will fight this one," your friend announces.

"Good luck," you say as she starts towards the ring.

"Thank you," she replies.

"Wait," you call as she climbs into the ring. "Do you know her?"

Kasai glances back. "Of course. She's my sister."

"From team Sanal, we have Zalua!" Koto calls to the crowd. "And from team Luke, we have Kasai! It's a battle between fire apparitions, and sure to get hot!"

"It's been a long time, sister," Zalua states with a smile that you find somewhat unsettling.

"Centuries," Kasai replies.

"Yes, and it seems you've changed quite a bit," her sister tells her. "Working for humans, even risking your life for them. Disgusting."

Kasai doesn't respond, but removes her cloak and throws it to the side.

"You're a disgrace, sister," Zalua comments, flames erupting all over her body. "So, I'm afraid I'm going to have to kill you. Sorry it has to be this way."

"No, you aren't," Kasai replies as her own body erupts into flames.

Zalua smirks, and the two stare each other down, waiting for Koto to start the match.

"Begin!"

Zalua strikes first, shooting a powerful jet of flame at Kasai, who sidesteps and answers with one of her own. Zalua takes to the air, and conjures fireballs. Laughing, she rains the down on her sister, who creates a barrier of flames around herself, holding off the projectiles.

Zalua returns to the ground, opening her mouth wide. Flames pour from her gullet, condensing and taking the form of a massive serpent. The serpent lets out a hiss and rushes towards Kasai, wrapping its great body around her before she can move.

Kasai hisses in pain as the burning creature seems to hurt even her with its flames. Her arms are locked at her sides, and her feet are bound. All she can do is endure the pain.

Zalua laughs and rises back into the air, holding her right palm above her head and pointing her fingertips skyward. Jets of flame shoot from them, coming together and creating a massive sphere of fire.

"Okay, ladies and gentlemen, I'm pretty sure I know what she's about to do, and I don't want to be in the ring when it happens!" Koto cries as she leaps out of the ring and dives for cover.

The sphere continues to grow and grow in size, quickly becoming much larger than Zalua, and only getting bigger. You can feel the heat from it from where you stand, and it's intense.

"I'll see you in hell, sister!" Zalua calls down to Kasai before throwing the fireball down at her.

Kasai is unable to flee as the fireball strikes her, exploding into a blast of fire that sends jets of flame flying everywhere.

You, Bruce, and Aalgan use your Spirit Energy to shield yourselves from the flame jets, while Kara leaps up onto the stadium wall and creates a barrier in front of herself, also shielding Lucy, Kaya, and your father.

Flames dance along the arena, and Zalua watches it with glee. You don't see any sign of Kasai, only a sea of fire where she once stood.

You wait for the flames to die down, feeling some concern, but not truly believing that Kasai has been beaten like this. As Zalua cackles in the sky above, and the audience either cheers for her or screams in terror at hear flames, as Bruce desperately calls out for Kasai and Aalgan watches with a passive expression, you simply wait for the fire to vanish.

And soon, the flames are pushed away from a single spot within the ring, a spot where a figure in a black leotard stands, somewhat scorched, but still very much alive.

Zalua stops laughing, and smirks down at Kasai. "You're less flammable than I thought, sister. I'll have to try a little harder this time."

"Tell me something, sister," Kasai says. "My friendship with humans, why does it so disgust you?"

"Friendship?" Zalua growls. "You worthless filth! Humans are inferior animals that despise our kind! They're only fit to be killed or consumed!"

Kasai chuckles. "Humans have shown me more kindness and respect than any demon I have ever met."

She slowly raises herself into the air, hovering before her sister.

"And they're more powerful than you realize."

Flames surround her right fist, but, as you watch, black sparks of energy begin to dance within them.

"Let me give you a demonstration," Kasai tells her sister. "Fist of the Mortal Flame!"

She slams her fist into Zalua's face, causing her sister to cry out in pain as she seems to be scorched and electrocuted all at once. The punch pushes her back, and you see black smoke rise from her face, one of her eyes going dark.

"Wow! Kasai's just used the powerful Fist of the Mortal Flame on Zalua!" Koto shouts. "That technique packs a punch, no pun intended, and seems to have hurt Zalua quite a bit!"

Zalua continues to hang in the air in front of her sister, the last of the smoke rising from her face.

"You may see humans as weak, but the flames of the human world are quite devastating," Kasai explains.

Zalua opens her mouth and roars, sending a torrent of flames at her sister. Kasai endures the fire and moves forward, striking her sister in the face once again with the Fist of the Mortal Flame.

Kasais left hand bursts into flames, and she begins to pummel Zalua with both, causing more and more smoke to rise from her sister's body, along with pained grunts and yells as she endures strike after strike after strike.

When Kasai knocks her back with a final punch, Zalua becomes entirely obscured by smoke. Kasai floats in front of the cloud, waiting.

The smoke soon clears, revealing a scorched, very pissed off Zalua. Her smirk has been replaced by a scowl, and her body trembles in anger. But, rather than striking her sister, she suddenly bursts into insane laughter.

"Idiot!" she shouts. "For all of your talk about human strength, you still can't take me down! Your little technique is pretty strong, but it's nowhere near enough to defeat a Fire Apparition as strong as me! At this rate, you'll tire out long before you can kill me, and then I'll rip you apart!"

Kasai stares at her sister. "You're right."

Zalua laughs. "Of course I am! Now, come at me again if you want! Or just give up! Either way, you're going to die!"

Kasai says nothing, and remains still.

Zalua rises higher into the air, holding her hands down towards her sister. Another colossal sphere is created, and rapidly descends on Kasai, striking her from above and sending her plummeting to the ground before exploding like the last one did.

You and the others shield yourselves once again as flames shoot everywhere. Zalua doesn't stop, however, and holds both hands above her head, pointing her fingers skyward. Flames pour from them, and merge together in a sphere of flames twice the size of the previous one. With a roar, she throws it down into the ring, where it explodes in a massive blast.

It's rather difficult to shield yourself from the blast, and you can sense Kara dipping into her life energy to make her shield strong enough to protect Kaya, Lucy, and your father.

As the firestorm ends, you watch the flames in the ring, which are once more pushed away from a single spot where Kasai stands, her own flames surrounding her body as she brings her right elbow down to her side, her right fist glowing.

"You're right, the Fist of the Mortal Flame won't be enough for you," she admits to her sister. "That's why I prepared this technique."

You feel something change within Kasai, as if a second presence has joined her in the ring. Whatever it is, it has tremendous power, enough to make you a little nervous.

Kasai pulls her arm back, eyes locked on her sister. "Dragon of the Mortal Flame!"

"What?" Zalua gasps in disbelief as Kasai thrusts her hand skyward.

Kasai opens her fist, and you hear a loud roar as a colossal mass of fire explodes from her palm, rocketing high into the sky and snaking around the entire arena. At its front, you can see that the flames have taken the shape of a massive dragon's head. Letting out a roar, the dragon descends, making its way towards Zalua.

"Wow! This technique closely resembles the Dragon of the Darkness Flame technique used in the last tournament!" Koto shouts. "But this one apparently is made from the fires of the human world!"

Zalua lets out a panicked cry as she desperately flees from the creature. It quickly gains on her, opening its mouth wide and rising above her before quickly diving down and catching her in its mouth. The dragon dives towards the stadium floor, sending chunks of Earth flying all over as it creates a massive crater next to the ring.

When the dragon vanishes, Kasai breathes heavily, and Koto cautiously creeps towards the crater.

"There's...nothing left of her," she announces.

Kasai turns and leaves the ring, a satisfied grin on her face as she makes her way back to your group.

"That was amazing," you tell her as she staggers over.

"Thanks," she says tiredly.

"Are you alright?" you ask in a concerned tone. "Seems like that technique took a bit out of you."

"It takes a tremendous amount of energy to perform that technique," Kasai confirms. "And, that's the first time I've ever used it. I'm tired, but I'll be alright."

With that, her eyes close and she falls to her knees, passing out in the grass near the ring. On the other side, you spot the enemy team arguing amongst themselves, two defeats in a row clearly not making them confident. Finally, their leader himself steps into the ring.

"This one's all mine," Kara comments, leaping from the Stadium wall and into the ring.

"I don't think so," Aalgan tells her as he approaches the ring. "I'll take this fight."

"Aalgan, we want to actually win here," Kara replies. "Why don't you just sit this one out?"

"Why don't you say that again?" Aalgan asks. "Right before I cut off your head."

"I'll flip a coin," you announce, retrieving a quarter from your pocket. "Heads Kara, tails Aalgan."

You flip the coin, and it comes up tails. Kara reluctantly gets out of the ring as Aalgan hops in. You pick up Kasai, and gently lay her down against the stadium wall.

Aalgan draws his daggers and moves towards the center of the ring, where Sanal is waiting eagerly.

"Begin!" Koto calls.

Aalgan steps forward with his daggers, cautiously approaching his foe. As he moves in to strike, Sanal opens his mouth and lets out a roar. Next thing you know, Aalgan is thrown backwards across the ring. He slips in the air and lands in a crouch, throwing a dagger across the ring at his opponent.

Sanal roars, and the dagger is sent flying back at Aalgan, who ducks and catches it as it passes over his head.

"I'm honestly not sure how Aalgan can handle this one," Kara comments at your side.

"He has some tricks," Bruce tells her. "Just give him some time."

Aalgan stabs a dagger into the ring, pulling it back up with a panel stuck on it. He tosses it into the air above Sanal's head. The dagger glows, and the panel explodes, several pieces of stone falling down on Sanal along with the glowing dagger.

Sanal looks up and lets out a roar, pushing the stone and dagger back up, but also leaving himself vulnerable long enough for Aalgan to throw his other dagger, impaling the creature through the throat.

Sanal staggers back, shock and terror in his face as he falls from the ring, landing on his back and going still.

"Clever," Kara comments.

Ten seconds later, Koto calls the match.

"Winner, Aalgan!" she announces. "This round goes to team Luke!"

The crowd roars in outrage as Aalgan retrieves his daggers and exits the ring. You pick up Kasai, and your team departs from the stadium, heading for the hotel.

You gather in the main room of your suite.

After taking Kasai to her bed, you join the others in celebration of your victory. Sodas and snacks are broken out, and Kara gets to work trying to help Bruce's arm heal. Between her work and his Spirit Energy, you hope that he'll be in top shape by the next match.

"Knock, knock!" you hear at the door, and look over to see Kaya, Lucy, and your father.

"We wanted to stop by and check up on you all," Lucy says as the three of them step into the room.

"And you're all looking well," Kaya comments, looking around at everyone.

"Hey, I've got a broken arm!" Bruce reminds her.

"Bruce, you've gotten more hurt fighting with kids from school," Lucy points out as she takes a seat next to him. "You never complained about it then. You just sat around and promised that you'd get them next time."

"Yeah, but...this time I already got the guy," Bruce comments.

"Then there's nothing to worry about, is there?" Kaya asks as she sits down next to you.

"How are you feeling?" your dad asks you, taking a seat beside Aalgan.

"Oh, cry me a river," Kara says half-jokingly. "I haven't got to fight a single match in this tournament."

"Well, make sure you're ready for our match with Belial," you warn.

You go into detail about Belial's teammates, and see the blood drain from your dad's face. Kara's jaw clenches, and Aalgan frowns. Bruce looks pretty scared, but tries to put on a brave face.

"So, we're boned," Aalgan says, putting it eloquently.

"No, we can do this," Kara assures him.

"No, we can't," Aalgan replies. "I know those demons, and none of us are even going to stand a chance against any of them."

"We didn't think we'd stand a chance against Balor, either," Kara tells him.

"And you didn't," Aalgan tells her. "Alone, any of you would have been crushed. If you hadn't told Johny boy here about Life Energy, he would have been screwed. You wouldn't have been able to handle him, Kasai sure as hell wouldn't have been able to, and Kaya wouldn't have even made it to the compound."

Kaya shoots him a glare, and Kara gives him a look of annoyance.

"If things are so hopeless, why did you bother coming?" she asks.

"I was ordered to," he answers. "And that was when I thought Belial was going to be the only one on his team that had that kind of power. Had I known who he was bringing, I might have actually disobeyed Koe for once."

"Well, you didn't know, and you didn't disobey," Kara tells him. "You're stuck here with us now, and in the same situation. So you can either give up and put your head on the chopping block, or you can man up and get ready to face this with the rest of us."

No abilities that aren't entirely physical in nature.

That makes it so Bruce, Kara, John and Aalgan have the advantage.

They don't have that many physical juggernauts, so it gives us the best chance of survival.

However, it won't matter, since they are still physically superior. Especially the one with wings.

And not using our spirit gun to point blank one-shot someone would suck.

So it's not an option,

So more story time with Aalgan since he seems to know about these guys.

Aalgan snorts with derision. "Good luck finding a way."

With that, he gets up and heads for his room, leaving you and the others to think of what to do.
