Leaning over carefully, you kiss her softly on the lips, your hand tracing the length of her tail, an act which makes her melt into you a little – though carefully. “No need. A little first aid and my power and we can probably take care of it before we get home. You don't have any bruises from your fight, so we'll have to just keep everyone from freaking out when we catch up to them.” She looks up at you, her eyes soft and her expression sad. “You didn't do anything that you need to apologize for, Akari-niji-chan. But if you insist, you'll just have to make up for it later by agreeing to wear whatever Yui-niji-chan wants you to wear at your wedding.” That startles her out of her regret and you gently place your hand around her elbow to keep her from jerking suddenly at the shock.

“But, aniki, I can't get married to Yui! How can we be your lovers if we're married to one another?”

You blink at her. “THAT'S your complaint?”

Your best friend gives you a confused look. “Was there some other reason I should be bothered, aniki?”

Weirdly, you're not sure if she's faking or not. “Well, nevertheless, you're getting married. Kiki-hime has to have the opportunity to be a bridesmaid as well, after all. Technically I think we're supposed to get married first, but I may make an exception.” Akari fidgets a little. “And no, it doesn't mean you won't be sharing my bed on occasion. Don't be silly, you're too precious to us for that.” She blushes and looks down shyly, the gentle reminder that more than one person wants her having a much stronger impact than it would have half an hour ago.

Running a hand through her hair again you get her attention. “Are you ready to catch up to the others, Akari-niji-chan? They're some ways ahead of us.” You feel Yuuhi-chan waking up, and then nothing from her; a very, very short nap? Did she merely doze off for a few seconds? It wouldn't be the first time. “We can wait here as long as you like, though. For once, we're not entirely in a rush.”

She shakes her head. “I'm fine, aniki,” she claims, and you think that might be true. You're pretty sure she won't run off, which is far more important. You meant every word you said, after all. “We need to do something about your ribs though.”

Nodding, you pull a roll of wide medical tape out of ~Nowhere~. “It's not the first time I've had to do this sort of thing. Just not on myself, usually.” Between the two of you and your power, you manage to tape your ribs into place so there is minimal grinding as you move. You watch her as she works on you, and there's....a softness to her expression that you're not used to seeing. Less stoic, and more....more involved, perhaps.

She looks much prettier that way.

Taping your ribs doesn't take too long you've both done it plenty of times. They're definitely broken, though, not merely bruised – but your power prevents the usual fatal complications of such injuries. And you'll heal quickly enough.

Actually, you can feel things knitting together already.

You forgot about the immortality.

Akari's confused expression is cute though. “I thought you had six broken ribs, aniki.” Her gentle touch nearly tickles you.

“I did. Now I'm down to four. In about three minutes I won't even have bruises.”

Akari's eyes widen significantly. “How....how did this happen? Is it because you are a demigod now?” She doesn't take off the tape, which is probably a good idea since despite the speed at which you heal, it would still hurt like heaven to have them pulled at.

She looks up at you, wonder and guileless amazement making her eyes nearly glow in the dark of the Barrier. You seal the image into your memory, to be recalled when you need it. Silk, definitely a silk painting. With a traditional border and look, to contrast with the hot leather-slut outfit she's in right now.

With a warm smile you take her into your arms. “A gift from some of Horobi's friends and servants. Arranged by Kiki-hime, to be honest. She remembered the legends of mermaids, and convinced a mermaid to give me some of her flesh. I'm immortal now, except for some pretty specific ways to die.” You run your fingers down your side and take the tape off. “I forgot that it comes with a side benefit.”

“That's....” Akari shakes her head, unable to put her thoughts into words.

Rising, you pull Akari into an embrace, and tilt her head up with both hands. “It's what she needed to make sure I was safe. I think you understand that a little, now....” Akari's blush is adorable, but you don't let her look away or down. Instead you give her a much slower, much sweeter kiss than the last few. By the time you are finished she's shaking like a leaf and you are surrounded in her scents. “....We all do whatever it will take to bring our loved ones safely to us, Akari,” you remind her softly.

Dazed, Akari nods, and you laugh softly at her first shaky steps. Fortunately she doesn't take offense, and instead smiles. “Aniki's kisses are the best,” she admits. Once she's a little steadier on her feet, you pick her up in your arms and fly towards the edge of the Barrier, taking advantage of your powers while you can. She does wrap her arms about your neck, but her head is turned forward, facing the world ahead of her.

You land a half of a mile away, and make sure you are both properly dressed and armed. Only then do you drop the Barrier, well aware that there might be left over mercenaries in the area. Despite your distance, your inhuman eyes can see a few of them, mostly strewn about the wrecked and useless van. The speed at which you and Akari took them out and the fact that you put up a Barrier means they're not even recovered enough to have gathered the wounded in one place.

You quickly find yourself torn by indecision. They were mercenaries, yes, and they were just doing their horrible job, yes. On the other hand, between you and Akari a number are dead, several are wounded to the point of needing years of physical therapy and major surgery, and in most causes you've left scenes that would traumatize most sane people to the point beyond PSTD.

Akari notices your hesitation, but says nothing, clearly expecting orders from you.

And you give them to her. “Call the police, and let them know you've seen foreigners with guns in the area. Feel free to describe them.” without a word she pulls a cell phone out of ~Nowhere~ and starts dialing. You, on the other hand, are concentrating.

While you've tried using Void Eyes to see through magic and the like, what you haven't tried to use them for yet is simply seeing elsewhere. Using them like a seer might, in other words, rather than as a sorceress might. You have an excellent idea of where your target is, and you concentrate on the images in your mind of that place. You build it from top to bottom, recalling where everything and everyone was before you fled from the monstrosity known as Melinda Blitzenberg. When you have it complete, every piece of debris, every bullet casing, every fleck of blood....you open your Void Eyes.

You're looking at the chaos and mayhem you left from a different angle now. You can see the person you're looking for – unconscious and bleeding to death slowly. The ruin of her hand is irrecoverable but you can keep her alive long enough for an EMT to help her. You don't really freeze the blood in her body as much as you cleanse what's already been spilled. It takes a massive effort on your part to do this, and it's not very comfortable for you either. The real world is never easy to manipulate.

Nonetheless you persevere, and after ten minutes you've cleansed and reintroduced at least four units of blood back into her body. The next trick is easier: you wrap her shattered and splintered hand into the frigid waters of the trenches, the cold, dark, pressure of the abyss crushing veins and arteries closed, freezing flesh and bone, and slowing her blood loss even further. She'll be lucky to have a few fingers left of that hand, but she'll live.

Releasing your power, you stagger back under the crushing wave of weakness that nearly brings you to your knees. With reflexes honed by years of sparring with you, Akari's hand grips your shoulder and keeps you upright without any effort at all, even though you're almost dead weight. You feel – and from Akari's expression, probably look – like you've just finished three tiers of Barrier Combat. “Just...gimme a minute....” you mutter softly.

Wordlessly Akari-niji-chan keeps you steady until you can stand on your own. Only then do you call the medical emergency number, asking them to assist officers and civilians down at the scene of the crimes. Well, most of the real crime evidence is gone: hidden in Barriers, eaten by giant hairballs, or simply not visible to the human eye. You hang up before she can determine much more, and you toss the burner phone away – barely remembering to flood the powder and electronics in the mercenaries weapons and grenades with water. Which you do with more of a casual effort than a focused one, which immediately shorts out that building, the building behind it, and several cars nearby.

You're not just tired or exhausted.....you're ~wasted~ from using that much power in the real world. You're in no condition to manage a high speed chase. Running, you might manage running. You're glad you're not chasing anyone. You fell Akari let you down slowly, and you sit on the ground, breathing hard.

She kneels, looking into your face with more worry than she's shown in maybe a week. “Are you all right aniki? You look like you fought a harder battle than I did.”

It takes you a moment to gather your scattered wits. “I was taking care of some important things, but I paid for it. I'm not hurt or anything, just tired. I'm all right.” You blink as Akari's finger rests on your forehead. Did you just lose time? From her expression you must have, though only seconds. Surely not minutes. “Give me a few minutes and I'll be okay.” Her worried look isn't reassuring.

“....help me up. I need to walk this off.” You couldn't possibly stand on your own at the moment, and you make a very big, bright florescent pink sticky note on the inside of your head that says in big bold letters, DO NOT PRACTICE NEW TECHNIQUES IN DANGEROUS PLACES!!! Because hell knows you're in no condition for anything right now.

Akari-niji-chan helps you up easily, and you both start walking away from the building as quickly as you can, which isn't very. You control your breathing, and speed up your heart rate, which helps a little. At the very least it clears your head. On the other hand, you've managed something that you couldn't possibly do only weeks ago. You know, because you have tried something similar. Unfortunately, it burns off huge amounts of Shen, and that combined with using a technique you have never managed outside a Barrier before has left you drained so deeply that even your immortality is helping much. But being able to use the other aspect of Void Eyes is going to be invaluable.

You just hope that it doesn't leave you like this every time.

When your heart actually stutters in your chest, you fall to your knees, dropping the power that lets you control your pulse and breath in favor of not having a heart attack in front of your niji-chan. “....I didn't expect this,” you murmurs thickly, and then you're in the air, wind rushing past as you fall towards the earth.

Rather than trying to struggle, you just let yourself fell where you are. It doesn't take long to realize you're being carried by Akari-niji-chan, especially when she slams into the ground with a bone-jarring impact. Then you're both flying again, the wind a rush around you. You only have time for an idle though: why doesn't her blood pool when she leaps so hard, and why didn't yours? Then you are waking up near a tide pool, on as beach somewhere.

“Just hold still, Aniki. Your Shen is almost gone.” That's the voice of your kohai, sounding as stoic and calm as ever.

If you could be bothered to think, you might have some pithy epithet or curse, but you just let Akari sluice cold seawater over your naked (?) body by hand. Each handful of water revitalizes your body, and it takes some time before you're able to think coherently again. “I don't think I quite thought that one through all the way,” you murmur softly.

That you could accomplish the impossible, at the price of the unthinkable. No, not exactly that, but she suggested it. “How do you feel, aniki?”

You sit up slowly and take a slow, deep breath. At least a fifth of your Shen has returned to you, which is enough to do everyday, ordinary things for a dragonette, and hopefully a demigod. You could even manage one tier's worth of Barrier Combat, but you'd be an idiot to try it. Still, you learned a number of things at the cost of nearly dying. You don't think it would have been a permanent death anyways, but you're fairly certain Akari would have had some issues.

Taking a real and honest assessment of yourself....you're exhausted. You very nearly drained your life force to nothing by accident. It was worth it, but you were inches from Yomi. Emi-sama probably would have had a few choice words for you about that. Otherwise....well, your nerves are shit, your coordination is shit, and your brain is still crawling back out of the abyss you nearly jumped into feet first.

Despite that you're not going to collapse again, everything is slowly normalizing, and you're naked on a beach with your best friend.

“Stable, mostly. I wouldn't trust me to do anything outside of fight for a while though.” Even half-dead, you can hold your own in a fight, and possibly continue past the brink of death. Now, walking, chasing people, negotiating, those things you wouldn't trust you to do. Cooking, that's right out. “Weak. Weaker than I'd like, stronger than I was a while ago.”

Akari-niji-chan slowly sluices another double handful of water across your breasts and tummy. “You were out for about eight minutes, aniki. I didn't realize what was wrong until Er Yin-sensei called to me from the Void.” Your Seer, of course. She's asleep now, as are several others: Shoko, Jinyuu, Kiki-hime, Yui-chan, Inau-kun, all sleeping safely. You cast a quick prayer for your loved ones and the love that watches over you and them. “This was the quickest way I could think of to help restore you.”

You open your eyes and look up at the clouds and stars. There are some palm trees, but mostly stars and clouds. “I'm cold, Akari.”

Akari looks at you, confused. “But aniki-”

“Not that kind of cold.” She blushes, and then starts to move closer to you. You reach up and look at your shaking left hand. You lower it, but Akari realizes what you want immediately. You stare up at the stars as she takes off the clothing she was wearing, and then moves over you.

Your gaze shifts to her carnelian eyes and she leans over you on all fours, skyclad, and you can see a wetness in her tearless eyes. Wrapping your arms around her you hold her close, closing your eyes again as she relaxes against you, her cool skin along yours. Neither of you gets cold. Neither of you get really warm, either. But that doesn't mean you don't need to be warmed up sometimes.

You feel the tension slowly leave her body as you lie in the damp sand, parts of it still warm from the sun, others chilled by the tide pool. “That's better,” you whisper softly, as she slides her arms under you, holding you firmly. Not tightly, not hard, just....firmly. “You can carry me to our family.” She nods, voicelessly. “That wasn't a request, baka niji-chan,” you murmur sleepily.

“I know, aniki.”

You rest.
