You bob up and down in the water and give the merman, merboy? How old is Dezzy anyway? Either way you look at him confused and try to gesture for him to explain.

He takes your meaning but appears to be having trouble putting words to thoughts.

"I mean, I think I know where she IS," he tries to explain, "But I don't know where she went."

You try to ratchet up your confused expression but you were already hamming it up a bit so he could pick up on it. Merrow have difficulty with plain old lizard body language apparently.

"Okay I'll tell you what happened. Sometimes, ships come through, right?"

You nod. You just finished hearing complaints about his mom sinking them.

"Mom usually sinks most of them," he unknowingly repeats your thought, "But we tend to give local fishing ships a pass so long as they stay far enough out to sea. Well this one didn't, so Milly and I decided to..."

He makes a gesture like he's trying to come up with a term.

"Bird them?" you offer. Birding people isn't a term you've heard before but you think it speaks for itself.

"Bird?"

You thought it spoke for itself.

"Birds are jerks," you explain and he nods.

"Bird them," he agrees. "Milly would distract them by throwing old fish at them while I punched some holes in their bottom."

"You're strong enough for that?"

He shrugs.

"Why didn't your mom help?"

"She went with dad to fight YOUR mom."

You didn't know that. You suppose that means mom is keeping out of trouble. At least keeping out of trouble while you're not there to partake.

"So I punched holes in the ship then swam off to meet up with Milly, and she never showed up," he finishes.

"So..."

"I think they caught her."

"And? It's not like they will eat her. Humans have some thing about eating things that talk, jerks withstanding." It confuses you but different strokes for people without tails. You should make that a saying too.

"Mermaids get an exception," Dezzy says, some of the frantic edge he'd lost telling the story creeping back in. "Some humans still think eating mermaid meat will make them immortal."

"I thought merfolk were incredibly poisonous."

"We are incredibly poisonous to eat," he agrees.

"So where did they go?" you ask, returning to the main point. You'd rather not have to find a new mermaid. You liked Milly.

"I'm... not sure," he says hesitantly.

"What? Why not?"

"I may have hit the starfish while waiting for Milly to show up."

Ah. It must have been a helluva a fight for him to lose track of time like that. You'll have to ask him about it later though.

"So where could they have gone?"

"Well either they put out to sea and sank slowly, pulled into the town and probably got repaired fast enough not to sink, or they pulled into the old hidden cove and are trying not to sink," Dezzy says tapping his chin as he thinks. "It'd take a while to check all three though."

start with the cove togther since that sounds like the closest, then split up if they're not there. You head into town since they like you there and merboy can head out to the sea since I'm sure he's a better swimmer. We can pick a place to meet later if we do need to split up.
>>
>>42254253
Chances are if it went into town they'd use the mer for ransom against the mother. If they went out to sea they're idiots and are effectively dead now and milly should be free, and that really just leaves the cove.

"Where's the hidden cove?"

"There are a couple, though the nearest is on the other side of the town. It's usually got at least one ship in it."

"Let's go there first," you tell him, "If it is in the town then I know people who will know if it came. And maybe they think they can trade Milly to your Mom to make her stop sinking ships."

"More likely she'd just stop doing it for fun and start doing it because she hates them," Dezzy says, starting to swim off with you close behind.

"Is it fun?"

"Have you ever watched a human drown? They thrash around then get really still and twitchy. It's hilarious," Dezzy laughs.

You spend a while trading "watching things die" stories as you swim. You notice as you swim a small swarm of greyish brown things swimming behind and far below you, but after you call Dezzy's attention to them he says they're fine.

The path you swim gives the town a wide berth and you have to dive deep to avoid a ship passing nearby. On the far side of the town the mountains appear to die off entirely and is replaced first by plains than a large patch of forest. Dezzy leads you along the beach into the forest where you find a ship hiding out in a spot that is nearly invisible from the sea or land until you're right on top of it.

There are humans, or possibly elves, shuffling around on the shore and you can hear the sound of men on the ship as well. Their single sentry sits high on top of a mast and doesn't notice either of you as you swim in next to the ship.

"Check if this is the ship," you tell Dezzy, "I'm going to check the camp."

"Shouldn't you wait until we're sure it's the right ship?"

You look at him like he's grown a second head.

"No?" you reply, confused.

"Uh, okay," he dives down and you swim toward shore.

The camp has about a dozen men in it, most of whom carry some weapon or another. A couple are fairly beat up and look like they've had a bad couple weeks, and they're the subject of some consolation by the more sailor looking men. You swim around to a blind spot conveniently left in place on the shore and start climbing out to sneak a closer look. You're half out of the water when the bushes rustle next to you.

There's a very surprised looking human with his pants half down. You are suddenly aware of a stink coming from behind the bush. He stares at you and you stare back.

"Hey," you say in a low rumble.

He gasps and you rush him. You manage to clamp a hand over his mouth as you drive him deeper into the brush. Your rush turns in to a tackle as you end up sitting on his stomach, hand still keeping him from speaking.

"Hello, friend," you say pleasantly, "Please be very quiet. Loud noises make me..." you feign considering what word to use then clench your free claw on his chest, applying enough pressure to break the skin. "...twitchy."

You carefully remove your hand from his mouth and he immediately begins babbling.

"Oh gods, please don't kill me and tear out my innards to feast on with your lizard bride, sir," he yammers.

That was an oddly specific request. Also, you're pretty sure he just called you a dude. YOu punch him either way and he shuts up with a pained whine.

"A few painless questions and I let you up to run off into the woods," you tell him, not letting him start up again.

He stinks of fear and you're fairly sure the only thing keeping him from soiling himself is that he took care of that before you got here. He's quick to nod his agreement though so you smile at him, human style. That seems to make him less relaxed, weird.

"Have you seen any mermaids lately?" you ask nicely.

He looks confused but shakes his head. "Ain't seen anything. We just pulled in this morning."

"No one fished up any?" you ask to make sure he's not trying to loophole his way through a lie. You lean forwar to put your weight on his chest, the clawed hand you support yourself on a bit closer to his neck than he's probably comfortable with.

"No!" he cries and you apply pressure to his throat and he quiets before repeating at a lower volume, "No, we've not seen no merpeople of any stripe."

Crap.

"Why are you all here?"

"Uh, common place to hideout. Most people don't know it's here. We were gonna hide out til we find out about a good ship to score off of," he explains, "Not a lizard ship, mind. Don't think your lot have ships, or even get out this way very often. We only hung around thing long because our usual contact in town is missing, then the barbarians showed up."

"Barbarians?"

"The guys in the fur? Figured you'd know them more than I would, they're always trying to go in the swamp. This group just got back from there," he explains with a weak smile, "Much fewer of them though, if you catch my meaning."

"Who is strongest in the group? Do they have anything nice?" you press, in both uses of the term.

"Uh, uh, probably Barry, yeah. Barry ain't never lost a fight on ship. Dunno about the barbarians, we ain't picked a fight with them yet. Plenty of space to go around. But you got the right idea, strongest guy, he has the best stuff."

Huh. Well that was informative. You see a shape in the water through the bushes that suggests Dezzy is waiting for you.

You step off of the man and head for the water. This was a huge waste of time and you're no closer to finding Milly. Behind you the sound of the man dashing back toward his camp is heard. By the time they're roused to alertness though you're in the water and gone.

As you slide under the surface you spot Dezzy hovering in the water. He sees you and points at the boat and shakes his head. Confirmation is good you suppose.

Following him out of the hidden spot you swim back toward the town. It took you a couple hours to get out here and it wasn't terribly early in the day after your fight and meal with the spider. It's getting toward sunset as you approach the town from the sea.

As you swam you noticed the swarm of things was still following the two of you. You pointed them out again but Dezzy just waved you off, declaring them a nonissue.

You haul up a ways from town and surface so you can speak.

"So how do you want to do this?" Dezzy asks.

"Dunno. We can swim into the port and check for the ship, then either enter the town from there or I swim around to the gate. Or I can just walk into town and ask about damaged boats and if anyone has seen Milly."

He looks at the town a bit uncomfortably and you get the feeling he'd rather not head in closer if he doesn't have to. Either option is probably going to put it after dark by the time you get any results.

"I'll head into town," you tell Dezzy, "You should get home."

He looks at you confused.

"I can help. I don't mind," he says, failing to cover his case of nerves.

"Yeah, but I can get similar results by myself, and if it gets too late your mom will get home. How will she feel if both her kids are missing?" You say reasonably.

He pales, his skin growing almost as white as the weird bone patterns on his skin.

"I should get home," he says.

You nod.

"If you do not hear from me by tomorrow noon, assume I've found something and am working on it. Either way I'll be back at your place tomorrow to keep looking."

He nods back and disappears below the water. You notice the weird fish swarm follows him as he leaves.

It takes you a while to get back into town through the East gate. Apparently lizards don't come in that way. Ever. You end up having to throw rocks at the guard til he falls off his seat, and has them open the door to let him in. At which point no one is willing to give you too much trouble since you're larger than most of them, and quite ready for violence if they try to slow you down.

You head directly towards the trade guild. It's right next to the port, and you've got an idea that fixing ships takes materials which probably have to come from a stockpile, and the guild stockpiles everything. If they don't know about a ship getting repaired then there isn't one. Or at least that's the way you figure it.
[1/2]
>>
>>42256657
[2/2]
Halfway to the guild as you are passing though one of the main thoroughfares, a scent tickles your nose. It's achingly familiar. Kind of like fish, but not quite a fish. You feel like you've smelled something like it recently. After a few moments you place it as smelling like Dezzy. You have a hard time picking out merfolk odors from all the seawater around them but that just means you've had to make a special note of it. The thing you smell now is like Dezzy but different. That's incredibly promising.

Following the scent is difficult but you manage it very well. You even figure out which way the Milly-like smell was going and follow it deeper into town, away from port. Once it get off the main thoroughfare the trail marks a zig zagging path through several back alleys before terminating at an inn. From the smell of it sailors stay here. The sailors that don't smell quite as strongly as normal sailors. The important ones.

You sniff around the edges some more when it occurs to you suddenly that while you're doing a great job you're probably also looking pretty suspicious. You look around to see if anyone is paying attention to you. The answer, you find, is yes. Most of the street was watching you sniff at that building, including a couple guys who were standing outside it went inside when they saw you.

You're sure as birds are jerks that Milly or someone who smells like her is in this building.

Nytora would murder you if you left her out of this. Also, she's much better at non-lethal murder than you. You'd rather she use those skills on the people you point her at than decide you're deserving. It takes you dozen or so minutes to cross town to the tower.

Nytora is awake, since the sun is down, and was apparently bored anyway. After a quick explanation you find out she has no idea who Milly is but that's apparently not a dealbreaker where her services are concerned. The two of you head out.

By the time you get back to the inn you find a new scent trail leading out of it and away. Did they leave while you were getting Nytora? Why would they do that?

An annoying setback for sure but not one you can't deal with. The scent is as prevalent as ever, though now you also smell musty bear. Did they try and cover up her scent with a bear? You're not particularly afraid of bears.

A memory forces itself to the forefront of your mind, and you correct yourself. You're not afraid of MOST bears.

The trail this time wneds all over town, probably in an attempt to lose you. It crosses itself several times, but Milly's sent tends to fade quickly so determining which is the fresher trail is easy. Even if you somehow lost her scent the bear is quite prevalent as well. Ultimately you end up sneaking up on the back of a building that seems oddly familiar.

"Does this seem familiar to you?" you ask Nytora. She looks at the building, which is much like most of the others of this town, built closely in an attempt to save space near the port.

She shakes her head.

"You go around the front and see if they exitted that way I'll check this side," you tell her.

You approach the building as stealthily as you can, but the presence of armed men and women inside keeps you from getting particularly close. You climb the outside wall and listen at one of the windows where you can hear talking from inside, but it's too muffled to make out, and you're forced to join Nytora on the roof.

"She's inside," Nytora confirms.

"You saw her?"

"No. There are some humans inside arguing about how to sell a mermaid that has human legs."

"How did she get human legs?" you ask, surprised.

Nytora shrugs.

"Maybe she stole them?"

"Can you steal legs like that?"

"Dunno. I'm not a magic user."

The two of you sit in quiet contemplation of that for a minute. After another quick conference you both agree that you're quite happy with your lizard limbs, though personally you might spring for some wings. You could kill birds so easily if you could fly.

"Oh, also I knows why this building is familiar," Nytora suddenly speaks up as you're about to bash through a window screen and begin your raid. You stop and listen.

"This is the adventurer's guild," she tells you.

Ah. Come to think of it you never saw the back of the building, but now that you think of it that area is right for it. Huh...

>Go in the front door, normal lizard business as usual
>You promised yourself a raid, and by god lizard you'll get one

"That makes this easier," you say.

Nytora nods in agreement. The two of you climb off the building and head around the front. As you open the front door there are at least a dozen adventurers waiting inside, weapons ready. They bristle visibly when you come in.

"Hey!" you say, with a friendly wave.

"Yo!" Nytora echoes you, with a more subdued wave.

Your greeting seems to throw the adventurers off as to whether they're supposed to attack or not. After you hear the guildmarm fighting her way through the crowd though.

"Let me through! Let me through!" The big old human lady shoves another man twice her size and he stumbles to the ground in front of you as she presses her way through the crowd.

"Sorry dears, we're closed to lizards today," she says apologetically, "A couple men came by, and they hired out the whole place to keep lizards away from them."

You blink, and Nytora narrows her eyes, apparently getting the gist from their tone.

"That's fine," you say suddenly, "Can we just gets our friend so we can leave?"

"Uh," the guildmarm gapes, "Your friend?"

"Yes, our friend Milly." You describe Milly for her and you see some recognition in the guildmarm's eyes.

"Who is this friend of yours?" she asks.

"Ah, you knows how if ships get too close to the beach to the west they wills be sunk by a large monster?" you ask.

"Yes?"

"Milly is her daughter. She was kidnapped by some fishermen a while ago. We are trying to gets her back before her mom gets angry," you explain.

The guildmarm considers this. "This is starting to sound like we're not getting paid enough for this kind of trouble."

"It's a sea monster, what's she going to do to a town?" an adventurer, you think a friend of your muscled friend from the other day, speaks up.

"Oh, Milly's mom is a friend of our mom. Also, Milly is our friend, as mentioned."

The adventurers who were here to find out who your mom is all seem to pale at that.

"Y'know what. I don't know why I'm listening to this," the guildmarm interrupts, "You said the word kidnapping, and that girl didn't look right when they brought her in. I'm putting a stop to this whole shebang."

She sends a couple adventurers upstairs and a minute later they return with a couple of extra salty sailors and Milly. Milly appears to be quite out of it. The sailors are also angry. They start complaining about treatment and payment, then they see you, and they start complaining more."

The guildmarm ignores them and just examines Milly, who giggles at the examination.

"Y'say this girl is related to the sea monster?" the marm asks.

You nod. "She's a mermaid."

"Shhh. Sunny, that's a secret," Milly admonishes you, then giggles and mumbles something about starfish.

"Well, she recognizes you, that's good enough for me," she turns to the men, still held in the grip of the adventurers, "I think me and the law need to have a discussion with these gentlemen concerning the laws we have about kidnapping and trafficking people illegally." She looks back over her shoulder at you again.

"You just get that girl home."

You grin and salute. Nytora mirroring you. Together the two of you frogmarch Milly out and start her walking toward the gate.

"That was disappointing," Nytora grunts.

"Yeah," you agree.

"Is she goings to be okay?"

Milly giggles again and says something rude about your mother in lizard. Or maybe she's randomly hissing, it could go either way.

"If she isn't betters by tomorrow Mom probably can makes a poison to fix it," you shrug.

"I hopes she remembers how to swim," Nytora says.

You nod in agreement. You have a hard enough time swimming without a full tail.

As you walk along the beach, gently tugging Milly along, you puzzle through the signals you know that merrows might recognize. Unfortunately, "I've got your lost kid over here! Come get her!" doesn't translate well into noises you can make at full volume. Luckily you have the general "come look at this thing" call. Like most of the best things you can say in life it's easy to say at full volume.

"HEY!" you howl at the ocean.

You repeat yourself. Then again. You're pretty sure if anyone had heard you they'd have replied by now.

Water fountains out of the ocean and you find yourself swept up by the unnatural wave. You tumble next to Nytora and manage to get yourself upright again. You notice she had an easier time of it. You're going to blame the tail.

Sitting in the surf is Milly's mom. She's making a careful examination of Milly and you feel embarassment for the girl as she's squidhandled. For her part Milly just laughs.

Then tentacles reach out and snatch up you and Nytora, and the screaming starts. Oh god lizard, you don't want to die. You didn't even eat her. They begin to tighten and you feel your ribs protest. You don't want to be crushed for easy consumption! That's for rats!

After a few moments of panicked breathless hissing and struggling the tentacles ease off a bit. Milly's Mom puts both of you down and looks at you confused.

"I'm sorrys did I hug too tight?" she asks.

"That was a hug!?"

You're shocked by the volume of your inner monologue until you realize Nytora actually did yell your thought. She turns to you.

"What the frog devil is a hug?" she demands.

You shrug. You have a loose understanding of the idea, but you didn't know it involved crushing tentacles. All told you think you could live without experiencing it again.

"Thank you for bringings her back," Milly's Mom interrupts the two of you. "You've saveds me some trouble."

"I thinks we saved the town some trouble," you reply.

Milly's Mom chuckles darkly.

"Yes, you did."

Both of you shudder a bit.

"Now, I don't believes we've been introduced." She looks at Nytora and you take care of introductions. It turns out she's heard of Nytora. Apparently Mom mentioned her before they fought?

You spend some time talking family. Apparently Milly's Mom recognizes whatever they got Milly high off of and expects it will wear off by morning. You're in the middle of relating your adventures in town when suddenly Nytora vanishes.

You look around and notice a familiar weird patch of sand. Apparently there was more than one of those things.

Milly's Mom shares a look with you as you examine the space where Nytora used to be. There's a silent moment of contemplation.

"Please waits. I needs to help her with this," you say leaning over to where you think the edge of the trapdoor is.

You feel around a bit and manage to get your claws in under it. With some effort you manage to heave it up to look inside.

Nytora appears to be doing alight. She's got one of the spider's legs off and is trying to use the tip to gouge out the spider's eyes, to little effect.

"Do you needs a hand?" you ask.

She pins the spider long enough to glare at you then begins rolling around the hole again trying to weild her chitinous poker, her sword too long to use easily in the tight spaces.

You notice her dagger is missing again. You know you returned the one you got out of the guild lost and found to her. There's a creeping suspicion in your heart that she has been having fun without you.

Either way tou slip your dagger out of its crude sheathe and toss it into the hole.

"I wants that back," you tell her.

She abandons the leg tip and catches your knife. You catch a glimpse of it's angry orange glow coming to life as you the trapdoor drop, and turn back to Milly's Mom.

"She'll bes fine," you say.

You finish telling the older monster about your adventure and she tells you some interesting things in return. A minute later Nytora pulls herself out of the spider's trap, dragging its carcass behind her. She's scuffed but unhurt.

You look expectantly at her and she looks confused.

"My knife?" you remind her.

She blinks then climbs back into the hole. After she gets out she returns your dagger, and you in turn return it to its sheathe. Nytora is nice enough to split her spider with you and Milly. Sadly Milly's mom is too large to accomodate, but she claims a lack of hunger anyway.

As you're wrapping up meal you decide to crash on the beach with Milly and her Mom. You've really got nowhere else to be.
