"Do ye like yer summoner?"
"Does it matter? Go away." Kayda picks another axe out of her weapon crate, and keeps on with her target practice.

You are Jack Albator, handsome adventurer, champion drinker, motivational speaker. Today is the first day of training with as many of the heroes as possible.
Of course there are a few setbacks, you expected there to be. It's just that this one may be your toughest case yet. You don't think you've ever seen Kayda smile, and she is less than cooperative with everyone around her. You're not even sure she likes her own summoner. She's been less than open with expressing how she feels about this whole thing. The last time she even spoke with you, she was still technically in custody after fighting you. So you may be the last thing that she wants to see.

"'ey, It does matter, so ye better start likin' yer summoner."
"Why!?"
"Because ye don't have much of a choice, yer stuck with her."
"I don't have to 'like' anyone! And I'm not 'stuck' with anyone, either! I can leave whenever I want, I've done it before!"

She picks up another axe from the crate and throws it at her target.
"Just go away."

You want to feel sorry for her, but you can't say that you had the same kind of reaction from being summoned. Atsuko and Keiko are not bad summoners to have; they let you do whatever.

She doesn't even want to like her summoner. Her summoner seemed to like Kayda before, but perhaps the feeling isn't mutual.

You want to pat her on the head, tell her that everything will be okay and that maybe she's being too hard on herself and too negative about the situation.
-but then, there's that look again when your hand gets within a foot of her head. That 'don't even think about it' look. It seems your experience with calming people down end right about here.

>Try to convince her that it's not all bad
>Did you know you'll live to be like, a thousand?
>Let's try another weapon that's not Axes
>Let's go talk to your summoner
>Other?

Everyone, I hate to do this but I gotta get going, next post was almost written but I'm going to miss my ride if I don't leave now.

Thread resumes when I get home. In the meantime, think about this:

>Let's try another weapon
>Which weapon?

>Rifle, It didn't work with Louise, but I have confidence in this.
>A much bigger Axe.

We don't really have anyone who's good with ranged, so go with bows and then try rifles.

You realize that agitating her any more would be a poor idea. She already has problems opening up to you.

She reaches deftly into the crate for another axe, and then looks down at her hand. She grumbles and kicks the empty crate over.

"Aye." You get her attention, "Maybe ye should try somethin' other than axes."
"I'm fine."
"Ye sure? Now that ye threw your weapons, there isn't much to fall back on anymore."

She thinks about your words for a second before looking back up at you.
"Okay, what did you want me to try." She says in a dry, almost defeated manner.

"Yer pretty good at ranged, maybe we outta keep ye there."
"Ranged?"

"How 'bout bows?"

She huffs, crossing her arms.
"Are you just saying that because I'm 'An Injun'?"
"What?"

"Are you just saying I should use a bow because of the way I look?"
"'just think ye have the arms for it."

She sighs,
"Then I have bad news for you; I've never touched a bow. I think my grandfather was the last in my family who didn't use a rifle."
"Nothin' stopping you from using both."

"Just give me the bow."

--

"See? Yer pretty good at this."

She pulls the drawstring back, and lets another shaft fly at the practice target.
"Yeah, good choice on the bow, Jack." Fritelli crosses her arms. "We'll move on to two arrows, and then three."

"I don't really like this." Kayda moans. "I don't like how it feels, it's sluggish."
"Ye want to try the rifle a bit? Here, Aye got one."

You pick it up and reach for the bolt. When you realize-
Bolt isn't there.

You flip the instrument back and forth searching for it, before Fritelli snatches it from your hand.
"Here." She grabs the entire trigger guard and pulls it downward, "Lever-action."

"Huh, That's nifty."

Kayda takes the rifle, and she hip-fires at the target without even looking. Two of the arrows fall away from the target.

"Can I go now?"

>We haven't even started training yet.
>No.
>Nice shot! Do it again!
>Hang on, Lass. Just another weapon.
>Aye, sure.

She really doesn't want to cooperate. You've barely been ten minutes trying to talk to her, and she already wants to leave.
You're not even sure where she wants to leave to, considering that she apparently doesn't like her summoner. Is she going to go sulk somewhere?

You're not going to allow it, either way. You need something to distract her.

"'ey, check this out."
With a smooth motion, you draw your pistol and shoot at the wooden target. A flurry of arrows eject themselves as the magical bullet expands into smoke on impact.

"Whatever."
"'ey." You smile, "Bet ye can't do better."
"Can too." She crosses her arms. "If you're trying to make me shoot some more, forget it."

"Not tryin' te Lass, just sayin' yer not as good of a shot as I am. I just got waay more experience than you do."
"Yeah, with pistols."

"Don't see ye matching my shot though, Lass. It's okay if ye can't."

She immediately spins the gun on her hand, causing it to cock. With a swift motion, she raises it up to her eye. Then she fires at the target.

The last of the arrows vibrate off the target, you can clearly see that both of her shots at it were met dead-center.
"See? There. I'm done."

"Lucky shot."

She spins around, her face visibly reddened now.
"What?!"
"Aye said, Lucky shot. Any sailor gets a good shot every now and again."

Kayda audibly growls before wrenching back the lever on the rifle. She takes little time to shoot at it one more time. The bullet grazes off the outer rim.
"DO-OVER!"

She makes the same sloppy motion, this shot hits far to the outside of the second ring. Which is far worse than what she was doing before.
"I'M DONE!" She yells, throwing the rifle down. Her face is visibly red.

>"Hah! Good shootin'!"
>"Ye need to keep yer calm, is what I've noticed"
>"'Ey, Chill. You were doin' great up until you got angry."

Before she storms away, you want to let her know that you were only messing around.
"'Ey." You put your hand on her shoulder, and lean down to about her eye level."
"WHAT?!" She spins around, you can tell she's just barley holding it together.

"That was a nice shot, kid. But ye let yer anger get to you too easily. You need to chill out, don't let someone else get under yer skin."

Her fists are balled up. She greets you with an angry sigh and looks down toward her sandals.
"You're an awful person." She begins, her eyes are puffy now. "Why would you say something to someone just to make them mad if you really didn't mean it?"

"'Cause that's how we find our own weaknesses. The things get you angry are the things that could one day do ye in. Ye can't get angry in a fight, even if you miss a couple shots."

She looks up, toward Fritelli.
"Is this guy really who is in charge? Why would I not get mad at myself if I screw up? How else would I learn?"

"Now now," Fritelli leans down, and before Kayda can run away; Fritelli wraps her arms around her in a gentle hug. "You don't learn by getting mad at yourself."
"Then you're not being really serious." You just heard her voice crack slightly.

"No, you're serious because you keep trying. Not because you get angry with yourself."

"I don't-" She stops herself, wiping her eyes on her sleeve. "That's not how I work. Okay? I think you should be a little more serious too if you want to be a chief. I'm not a baby, you can yell at me if I make a mistake."

"Would your parents have yelled at you if you made a mistake?"
"No, no. That's different. You're not my parents. We're done. I need to be alone for a while."

"Promise ye'll come back."
"I-I'll be back, soon enough."

She paces across the training yard, and then circles around the back of the castle.
"That's worrying."
"Yar."

Fritelli starts to go after her,
But you stop Fritelli before she gets too far.

"'ey, focus. We got training to do, remember?" You gently let go, and point toward the group of heroes 'training' or whatever they're doing. "'sides, ye should give her a little bit of space. If she doesn't come back in a few minutes, then ye can go look."

She takes one last look at the section of the castle she disappeared behind, before hesitantly following along behind you.

"Alright, listen up!" You yell to the gathered collection of heroes. "We're gonna get training, and we're gonna train hard. And we're-"
"Where'd Kayda go?" Yuuki searches around the courtyard. "I was keeping an eye on her a minute ago."
"Listen, don't worry about that. Worry about what we're gonna do first as a team."

"I am gonna worry about it, though."
"First!" You carry on, ignoring her pleas. "We're gonna do some weapons training. The thing fighting again Gilles taught me, is that we don't know how to fight as a team. We all just sorta do our own thing. We're gonna change that! And Fritelli says she knows just how to do it. Wanna tell us?"

"That's right. One of the things our army does when it's about this time of the year is we have marksmanship practice. Which means everyone as a group fires at once."

"Good! What else?"
"Hopefully at the end of this training, All of you will be functioning as enough of a team to do one of the single hardest tasks in the land."
"Great! And what task is that?"

Fritelli looks sudden, before looking serious.
"We're going to collect honey at the end of this training."

Everyone's faces are blank, to say the least.
"Honey? Like, from Bees, right?" Cody asks, you're glad he did because you almost thought she meant a different kind of honey.

"What are 'Bees'?" Fritelli asks, not a hint of sarcasm.

"Can I go look for Kayda now?" Yuuki asks, with worry.
"Yes, ye may." You say absentmindedly, still confused about Fritelli's words.

Announcer, I like your quest. I really do. I need more fluffy tail like I need dihydrogen monoxide and carbohydrates. But I'm honestly having a hard time understanding not only why, but HOW you can be this slow.
Fuck, Hexer runs faster threads, and envying the speed of about the slowest QM around is not a good place to be.
Are you trying to run from work or something? Are you a quadriplegic typing this story out with a tonguepad? Do you need to break into a server substation and manually insert the bits and bytes of each post by tapping wires together? I really can't understand.

Thanks everyone for the thread, sorry that took so long and we didn't get very far.

But hey! Hopefully that will change! The floor in my new home is in, so I'm about a month from moving in! When I do, that means more time for quests! They'll start earlier and last longer! Maybe even happen on more days, too!

Anyway, let me know what you thought of this thread. Thank you for the thread everyone.

I've slowed down a lot in recent time. I've noticed, you noticed, everyone knows. Some nights are faster than others, and it's dependent on a bunch of random circumstances I cannot control. It's a combination of several things:

-Poor Hardware, my shitty laptop cannot write and look through my notes anymore. It's getting slower and I need to upgrade.
-Work. When work started, I slowed way the fuck down. I can't really 'start' until I'm back from work, but driving to and from work where I live right now is about 2-3 hours each.
-Which means by optimum running window is 6PM to 8PM. By 8PM I'm distracted with trying to go to bed and finish up the quest.
-It also has lead to be being tired. I am constantly fatigued now. I rarely get days I can just come home and flop into bed, because I run two quests.
-Being tired means that I'm updating slower when I get home. I used to strive for 1 post every 15 minutes, I had an eggtimer set specifically for a new post when I was writing.
And also
-Distractions, I am a real person. I have real life things to tend to. I can't spend all my time on the computer anymore writing quests while I'm trying to prepare for tomorrow.

Yeah, I know, "Then why run a quest" you might ask. When I started CPM and DDQ, I was a college student living at home, several months before graduation. I had all the time in the world to run two quests. Getting a job has really snuck up on me and given me a poor schedule.

I've been trying to improve speed, but it's hard given the circumstances. I can't be compared to Hexer, as Hex keeps his threads alive for days at a time, allowing him to update them at his own pace. I don't get that, I get maybe four hours of effective runtime now.

It will improve when I move in the next month, until then, please try to understand that I'm not doing this because I'm lazy or because I'm losing interest in the quest. I really do intend to see this quest through, and I hope everyone stays with me for it.
>>
>>42247283
I've noticed a lot of the reason he has slowed down is because players don't submit votes as fast as they used to.

He can't start writing until he gets enough votes to consider it 'done'. Before he would 5+ votes within ten minutes. Now he barely gets three within 30.
Yeah, he's become sloth-like. But several times tonight even it took 30 minutes to get four votes. Two votes only had 2 submissions.
>>
>>42247287
thanks for running

>>42247616
I'm stuck using my phone for posting most of the time so yeah, I can't really post as fast as normal
>>
>>42247519
I'm not saying you're lazy or anything. Lazy people give a time and blow it off when they reach it. You're upfront and consistently slow, which while bad is at least respectable.
I really gotta say, though, if it's getting that bad it might be better to put one or the other on hiatus for a while. Do one thing well instead of two things halfway, and all that. Obviously I can't know your exact circumstances or what best to do, but just something to consider

>I don't get that, I get maybe four hours of effective runtime now.
Maybe Hex is a bad example. He's slow, but then he throws up a wall of text and fills the space between posts with ridiculously detailed setting info. Honestly I don't know what his deal is sometimes.

>>42247616
That's the result of the slow update speed, I think. Everybody knows that the next post won't be for an hour or two, so nobody's in a hurry to reply immediately. Or even check the thread often.
>>
>>42247287
Thanks for the run announcer, looking forward to more fluffy tails in the near future.
