“Hey, hey!” A man shouts from behind the counter of a small machine shop. Half assembled computers and holo-projectors line the walls, and three taidarens huddle near the back, peeking into a doorway where a holo-printer can be seen in the back being worked on by several humans.

“Customers.”
“Wish to buy.”
“Just looking!”
They say together. The clerk, a husky man with leathery skin and thick gloves, walks around from his place behind the counter.

“No, no I know what you’re up to. Don’t you think I don’t for a second!” He shouts. The triplets begin skittering across the small room, poking at sensitive devices and making a show of discussing the merits of one bit of junk over the other while periodically asking the costs of items. The clerk shouts again.

“Out! Now!” He says. His hand reaches behind his counter and he pulls out a long thin pipe. “We don’t sell to your sort.”

The triplets let out a sharp whistle.
“Cruel!”
“Hurtful!”
“Taidaren credit still credit!”

“You little rats couldn’t even run a paper route without robbing half the town. Don’t you try to give me some sob story, now out!” The clerk repeats, and gives the pipe a short test swing. The triplets rush out of the door, pocketing a small thumb drive in the process.

“Git, go! I see you again I’ll flush you back home myself in bits!” The clerk yells as he chases them to the door, swinging at them as the store’s theft alarm goes off. They turn the corner down an ally and quickly dive down a nearby manhole to the canals below the streets.

The door to the train opens and Michael is nearly run over by Mauser as he fills the doorway as fully as the door itself.

"Making a last minute errand run?" Michael asks. He looks down on him for a moment.

"No. Jacq is missing. Commander wants me to find him before we're scheduled to leave." He quickly looks at his watch. You expect him to elaborate further, but he doesn't.

I kinda wish I'd voted to deploy the Smith now.

I mean, it's a fun diversion to use Michael like a meat puppet spreading hives through the expanse, but only as an interlude. It seems like he's becoming a focus for this quest, especially after we spent most of the last thread on him.
>>
>>42211832
Events with Michael are hitting a lynchpin moment.

HIs mission is at a delicate point, teetering on the edge of being put on a glorious collision course with Lyle.

We have to implant Decker, Anderson, and Mauser before that happens, or we might lose them for good. You don't grow Hacker and Con Artist specializations on trees.
>>
Just got here, because reasons.

We remembered to warn the Commonwealth that there's another, hostile Hive out there, right?

>. You don't grow Hacker and Con Artist specializations on trees.
not yet anyways
>>
Hahaha, putting a parasite in Mauser and forcing him to work with people he doesn't even like as part of a team sounds glorious.
>>
How do we solve a problem like Coco and Nathan?

Lay a few parasites and 3 flies, so that the flies can attack Coco together when it invades Michael's room? it can't get all of them at once, right.

Or Michael can tranq it next time it fucks up his shit. And parasite it. Then we use Coco as leverage to demand a talk with Nathan in private to parasite him too.

Those two are the big threats to our secrecy. Nathan will give us the network knowledge of how to get around the surveillance, too.
>>
>>42211708
Michael quickly shimmies past the mountain of a man and exists the train.

"Well good luck with that." He says. There is a grunt in response as the door closes.

The way back to his bunk is quite difficult, especially with the bunk itself hanging from the ceiling. He inspects the latch to the door, then climbs in with the ladder built into the wall and forcefully seals it shut. He takes out his thermos and shakes it lightly until the egg layers slides out with a plop like a beanbag filled with curdled milk, along with clumps of ooze and chips of cocoon. It writhes its legs as it rolls about on the floor in a heap until it can right itself, and then inches its way between the wall and a desk drawer.

Michael inspects the thermos, finding a day's worth of the drone's work.

He quickly finds a small pile of eggs, each unidentifiable to him on the surface, but their identities are each oddly obvious to him. Four parasites, and five flies. He looks over to the egg layer as it scoots away, and there is a small line of four more eggs behind it. He quickly grabs them and stuffs them away into a bundle of clothes.

Next to them he finds a shredded slipper, the other missing entirely. Several articles of clothing have been tossed around, and the small plastic coating keeping the pantry from spilling its contents has been torn into. He lets out a curse under his breath.

Tell him if it keeps destroying his room, we'll have it detained in pet cage or something. Man, there are a few things you need to count on to do your job as a government spook, and having a private room where your stuff will be secure from parolees and destructive alien pets is one of them. There have to be red lines he and his pet can't cross, and that line is within the doorway to Michaels room. He's on probation right now, being outside and with his pet should be enough for him.

Michael lays back in his hammock, which has pivoted with the room, along with much of the furniture, he notes, and pulls out his tablet.

"Hello, thought police hotline, how may I help you?"

"Nathan, where are you, exactly?" Michael asks. You can hear a horrid hissing sound in the background.

"In my cabin. You know, the one filled with hidden cameras and radio sensors that's tuned to my anklet. In fact, you can look for yourself. I don't even need to hack it for you. I mean. I hacked it, obviously, but you actually have access." He says. Michael looks through the security system, or at least the parts he has access to, and finds Nathan's cabin under constant surveillance. He is sitting in his hammock with his computer, and his shadehound is in the corner dry heaving, its back arched with its mouth wide open. A moment later it projects a large wad of pink fuzz and slop. Nathan looks over at it with mild amusement.

"Found your slipper." He says.

"Are you taking any of this seriously?" Michael snaps. "That little monster is a menace. You keep that thing under control, or so help me I'll toss it out an airlock."

"Please. You almost wet yourself just looking at him."

"Look here, I may not be some gun toting field agent, but don't you think for one second that you have any right to be messing around with my things. Do you have any idea how much sensitive material is in my cabin?" There is a short pause.

"Bout a week's worth, I think. Mostly briefs."

That's my 6 am reading comprehension for you!

But that aside, we can rely on him to protect our room when he get's back. As a professional soldier we can at least expect him to follow orders. Mostly. In the meantime we'll just have to keep an eye on our egglayer.

"Nathan if I so much as think you or your dumb animal is putting this operation at risk, I will have you put on a prison ship so fast it will make your head spin." Michael says, his face turning slightly red. That was his favorite pair of slippers. "You are free on my time, which I give out of the kindness of my heart, and I can send you back to the inside of a concrete cube with one call. You understand?"

There is a deep sigh on the other end, and you watch as Coco looks up to Nathan and begins to nervously pace around him.
"Yes, I understand. He won't leave my cabin."

"Good." He says, and he ends the call.

Michael leans back in his hammock and covers his face with his arm.
"You know I miss the days when I was just listening in on public relay calls and marking red flags. Back then most days was spent listening to people talk about holo-games and political dramas." He says dryly.

There is a ping from Theseus. A collection of reports regarding a number of terror cells, criminal agencies, and less then reputable relay network connections, many of which once were used to hire Lyle's services.

"There has been a development." He says as he reviews the data for you. "A response from the offer, an organisation has come forward claiming responsibility for the attack on Gemini, and claim to wish to speak with Lee. They did not give a reason why, but are requesting clarification that he is in your custody. How should I respond? The likelihood that they are the same group from the attack is high, but I cannot verify the claim, nor can I identify their location or identity yet."

You'll have to be more specific.

You don't mean the original blowup of Lee's prison on Gemini Beta, do you?

>>42212471
That was Gemini Beta, if it is, he dropped an important-ass word.

Also, that attack was probably a Union false-flag, wasn't it? Since it was used as cover to disappear Lee.
>>
Ask Nathan about Theseus. How much does he know about Theseus? What is he capable of doing against Theseus? Then inform Theseus so that he can come up with countermeasure.
>>
>>42212451

I think there was a different attack besides the one we carried out against the "paper-company"

That being said, we lose nothing by saying Lee is with us. The group has no idea who we are.
>>
>>42212441
Wouldn't Michael know if the blowup of Lee's prison was a false flag or not? He was in charge of that kind of thing, right? What version of events does he know?

What were Lee's memories of the attack and kidnapping like?
>>
>>42212489
There was a clearly fake bomb threat that was definitely done by Killinger.

That's it as as far as Gemini terrorism goes. The other attack was on its twin.

I dunno about suddenly asking Decker about the Unity.

I mean you can try and justify it as going into the expanse, wondering what he could do in case of Unity attack.

But it's still a risk, since there's already a simple response to Unity. Turn off the wireless.
>>
>>42212547
We have to assume for them to just contact Theseus means that they are deep, deep within the web. At this point they've presumably got enough security to reasonably believe what they are told. If you get to that level of shadowrunning everything everybody says ever comes into question and this quest gets needlessly complicated.
>>
>>42212547
I like this. "We are not currently ready to divulge any information about his whereabouts" is a super governmenty thing to say.
>>
>>42212441
>nor can I identify their location or identity yet."
Do you think you can find out soon?

Also seriously clarify, which attack are we talking about. That seems kind of important to the decision.
>>
>>42212577
The Union's agents themselves are also in the deepweb.

For all they know, we're the Union using this data to lure out Lee sympathizers into a sting operation.

I mean we might be, luring them into a sting operation. An operation where our flies sting them. And they get parasited. But that's irrelevant.
>>
>>42212577
>for them to just contact Theseus
Well they didn't, exactly, "just contact" him.

They left a response in the same circles that Theseus left his offer in.

>A collection of reports regarding a number of terror cells, criminal agencies, and less then reputable relay network connections, many of which once were used to hire Lyle's services.

It wasn't like emailing theseus, it was more like another entry on the bulletin board. Some onion-routed hearsay.
>>
>>42212573
Why not? That's why we brought him on board, wasn't it? He being the only capable human against the unity. He was even taken out of a high security prison just for this.So it makes sense to find out what he plans to do about the unity when we encounter them.

The abridged, Saturday morning cartoon narrator version. It's been a while so I suppose one is due anyhow.

You are the Hive Queen, the ruler of a powerful and ancient race of hiveminded insectoid creatures that found yourself alone and isolated in uncharted space. After landing on a planet and growing your hive, you came into contact with the humans of the Union of Independent Colonies, which had crashed due to an attack by the human made renegade AI Theseus, who is a self-replicating networked intelligence often referred to as the Unity. After passing your small hive off as a settlement of primitive stone age creatures to the Union and befriending the Unity, you quickly became a major power in the region of the Expanse, a sector of space wedged between Union space and the territories of a number of other powers.

While avoiding revealing yourself as a space fairing race, you managed to scout the space around you, while capturing and recruiting a notorious mercenary named Lyle Rogers and his crew of taidarens Huey and Dewy, and his Ceph navigator Coil. In addition, you discovered a connection between the Ceph and a strange entity with a mysterious and malicious intent, and discover the location of your mother hive, a devastated world reduced to cinders by the crystalline entity and the slave races that serve it.

After scouting the expanse, you eventually found the disillusioned genius Dr. Elizabeth Vaughn, who had been one of the creators of Theseus and the reason he had gained his freedom. After joining your cause, you take the remaining survivors of her ship as prisoners, holding them in a comatose state within your hive while deploying Lyle to work for you in secret.
>>
>>42212744
Using Lyle's contact on the Union capital of Gemini, including the aid of anti-terror operative Dillon Reager and gun for hire Jackob Eisner, and rescue Ryan Lee, the first human encountered by the hive, who had been used in an attempt to attack the hive in the name of immoral scientific pursuits, which are discovered to be linked to the once dead Skyl, the last slave race of the crystal menace.

After the daring rescue, the hive establishes a small secret base on Gemini, as well as infecting a scientist, a government agent, and two maintenance workers using mind controlling parasite drones that link their minds to yours, giving you eyes in the Union itself.

With your allies growing to include the mechanical ghost known as Heretic, a discovered intelligence left behind by the Skyl to continue their legacy after their extinction, you eventually find surviving hive life in the form of the Obsidian Queen, a hostile queen driven mad by the crystal influence. Her forces are seemingly endless, and her rage equally so, and after several fierce and short battles you have heard unnervingly little from her territory, and just as well, with the arrival of the Scavengers, nomadic creatures that raid intelligent civilizations for technology and resources. Their arrival prompts the opening of diplomatic talks between the hive the human faction the Commonwealth of Free States, which is on the verge of war with the Union, in order to deal with the mutual Scavenger threat.

Back to our regularly schedules questing.

No organisation made a reliable claim of responsibility, but the details they provided seem mostly authentic."

"The attack was not the result of the Union itself?" You ask.

"Apparently. I do not know why they seem to want to contact Lee, or why they performed the attack, but it seems the attack itself was not the result of special operations, but a legitimate attack by insurgent forces. It is likely however, judging by their mission's failure, that their attack was facilitated or allowed to proceed by Union special operations. There is insufficient data to make a conclusion."

You think on that for a moment. "Can you arrange a meeting?"

"Possibly. Shall I inform them that you hold Lee in your custody?" He asks. You send a digital nod in affirmation, and you can feel Zero One churn slightly. It takes several hours of silence for any result.

"They have transmitted a meeting place. New Tokyo, Path, at a as yet undisclosed location. I assume you are fully capable of infiltrating any human city without causing alarm, due to the presence of hive-forms across New Prescott city. They claim they will relay more detailed locations after they can confirm your arrival on the planet.

We've got a month to fix it, and if Vaughn can't come up with anything by then we can just give him psionic implants. And all of this assumes he actually needs to be there for Elizabeth to come up with a solution, which isn't the case.

Also, sending hybrids with fake ids and stolen credits to pay for conventional travel to Path within the Union is easier than somehow getting Lee from hive space onto Path in one piece.

What, load him into a pod and crash it into the depths of the ocean?
>>
So, who are we going to send to Path then gents? How about Lyle and co? Jackob can masquerade as Lee while leaving a trail of breadcrumbs to Aral at the same time. And of course we get to see them all make a grand ol mess of space Japan.

>>
>>42213092
But that will basically double the number of threads required to actually have the meeting. It'll take two threads just to aug them up to that point, and at least another full thread to find transport to Path for them. And this will leave nothing but those crappy flash clones managing our Gemini hive. Sending Lyle is significantly faster, easier, and safer for us on the overall.

Definitely not. Lyle is wanted, and the dragnet is in maximum overdrive for him.

"Possibly." You say. He responds rather quickly.

"I would advise caution. Recent events in the past few years have rendered Path relatively unstable. There is a reason an unknown terrorist organisation wishes to arrange a meeting there. A mixture of corporate political investments and government overspending in the wake of financial recessions have resulted in large portions of the planet privatizing public services, including police as a cost saving measure. At the same time, it is a major military industrial facility, and it heavily patrolled by Union forces."

He sends a colossal collection of data your way. Rising contraband, illegal weapon ownership, bike gangs, mounting insurgencies and corporate conflicts spilling into the streets. The planet is one of the most heavily populated, and most of that population is concentrated in several massive megacities. Outside the cities, the planet is harsh, cold, and inhospitable to most forms of agriculture, making farming towns like the ones on Gemini impossible. Instead, the outlying areas are composed of industrial shipyards, mines, and military bases.

They should all have parasites inside them so that if we want, we can establish a new sewer hive beneath New Tokyo.

Just in case we want to later.

That's something Lyle and co couldn't do, unless you want to make him lay eggs for a few days while crossing your fingers that the po-po don't track him down.
>>
>>42213185
That's where cloaking comes in handy. Or we can just have her touch down under an assumed name. Or we could get Theseus to obscure it from the dragnet.

Honestly Path is a city wide super industrialized planet on par with a forge world. Keeping perfect track of every cargo ship and freighter that breaches the atmosphere all the way from Gemini. without the aid of hackable quantum computers, is practically impossible. There will be backdoors to the planet and Dillion and Jackob would know where to find them.

You work on the finishing touches for your clones, and you send several quick requests to Theseus regarding the nature of human smuggling. Unsurprisingly, he knows several ways to accomplish such a task, although the easiest way is often to simply pay for a charter ship, or to ride "jump seat" on a freighter. He begins to look into finding a cheap route from Gemini to Path.

>Begin a new cloning project

Meanwhile, within the military facility on Gemini Beta, an emergency call arrives from parliament. Secretary Windsor appears in front of Gilliam in his office. He has bags under his eyes, but his face is taught with concern like a wound up spring.

"We have a problem. Things in alternate projects are starting to get out of hand, and we may need to requisition additional resources from your project, or, more likely, shutter it temporarily." He says abruptly, without even a basic greeting. Gilliam is tempted to simply hang up.

"What? After all this work, just like that?"

"No. It would be shuttered because we may need you to consult on mounting issues that fall into your field of expertise. After the situation is resolved you can return to your work. For now, know that your project was not the only recipient of items recovered from the expanse, or from Earth. The three test subjects will be returned to your lab in the next few days, but in the mean time I'd like you to help consult on a matter. It isn't much, just some calculations in theoretical physics." He says as he steeples his fingers and rests his chin on his knuckles, allowing himself a short moment to close his eyes and inhale deeply. He returns his gaze to his console and taps out a few bits of data and several files appear on Gilliam's computer. He opens the first file and examines the title, scrolling past the large top secret header label.

"Moonraker? I've never heard of this project before." He says. Windsor nods.

"Good, then that means someone's doing their job for once." He says. "The hand full of survivors weren't all that we managed to recover the from lunar incident. Most of it was destroyed or presumed taken by the Commonwealth, but survey teams sent to monitor the major impacts found something in the debris fields. We've been working on a method of containment ever since."

I think now is a good stopping point. I'll try to stick around for a bit.

>>
>>42213807
Well, first of all thanks for running.

This sounds like a very interesting discovery indeed. If it proves important perhaps the hive itself can intervene via a stealth fleet. Recovered aspects of the weapon are extremely important. Even if we end up going public soon, we can "sell" any military action against the containment facility as reclaiming our own stolen tech. There's nothing really the union can do.

>>
>>42213848

Well, I personally think we may have played the stealth game long enough at this point. We need to know the locations of their tech, after that:

Send a few thousand ships to the location of each of their facilities (they probably don't have any more facilities on major worlds that would require infiltration, right?). Broadcast to any defending fleets nearby that we are reclaiming stolen technology and any aggression against our forces will be met with a lethal response. Send in ground forces to secure, remove, or destroy any void shards or tachyon projects. There's nothing the Union can really do short of a full scale war, and they are unlikely to commit to that at this point (they would also lose).

Sounds good.

Unknown red dwarf. Unknown yellow star.

Cluster, Drift, Refuge, Reprieve, Greythrone, the Sisterworlds, Turmoil, haven and distance.

That's every world in hive space we know of, combined with the ones already listed.

No. No going to Cluster yet.

We saw with Drift that the OQ notices blinking to a non-star, deep space structure much better.

Let's put that one off until we're assaulting it.

And this too >>42214018 >>42214013

Though with the level of paranoia OB has, I doubt that the pods sent to the former Hive Worlds will remain hidden, much less intact and not blown up by her patrols.
>>
>>42214027
But we're just looking at it. I hope you don't plan on flying in there without any eyes on it.

I'm saying don't look at it until your attack is imminent anyway.

We're already at Drift, Refuge, Reprieve.

Now what about mimicking the Builder and starting a much improved skunkworks >>42213897
>>
I seriously think we need to at least tell them about the history relating to the black crystal. how it's really fucking dangerous to even play around with, along with the fact(not sure but it's a given now) that the union IS trying to play around with it. the commonwealth will simply agree by the virtue of having a powerful ally against the Union, and akaik the commonwealth doesn't have any bad thoughts about Unity.

of course, information should be traded, but I think this should be thrown in as a 'bonus' while we do tech trading. and other more bits and bobs of our history in the future trades too.
>>
>>42214098
I think our research is already at its maximum output. Our industry can still be improved, however (industry can always be improved)
>>
>>42214141
I said skunkworks. This isn't about increasing research speed.

It's about inventing new research subjects we missed ex nihilo.
>>
>>42214098
Isn't that what our quantum thinkers and thinkers are already doing? Thinking of new things for mother?
>>
>>42214118
That reminds me that we'll have to bring up the crystals and the Confederacy's moon cannon project sometime in the negotiations.
And also find out about how the Commonwealth feels about Theseus and sapient AI in general.
>>
>>42214158
I think this is what they're doing. You're right. We have enough new research ideas for the time being at least that we certainly don't need more quantum thinkers.
>>
>>42214158
No.

They're researching ideas that have been thought up or mimicked from something.

They aren't trying to come up with new subjects entirely, which is what the Builder was doing, without the benefit of quantum brains. We can do it much better and more creatively.

Right now the Thinkers are following tech trees. We could be trying to create new ones that don't exist.
>>
Has QD gone to sleep now? As much fun as I have sperging with all of you for hours on end about multi layered shielding and the like, it is getting rather late on my end.
>>
>>42214190
>enough
>research
I don't...understand.

Also
>>41631875
>there is a chance you actually don't unlock all potential research options in certain fields of study on your own
We hit dead ends sometimes, that may not actually be dead ends. The Thinkers just hadn't seen the new applications yet.

Trying to unlock things we may have missed is worthwhile. Like the quantum scrambler warhead.
>>
>>42214255
I guess my concern with regards to enough research was that researching additional topics would slow down our ongoing research by dividing our thinkers' attention. Is that correct?
>>
>>42214295
no problem.
LAY MORE THINKERS
>>
>>42214155
Quantum thinkers are also a handy way to suggest research topics from what we have too.
>>
On Path, maybe we should lay a psionic mind reading, camouflaged drone that can hide itself in the sewers beneath the meeting place.

It only needs to get within 50 meters, or around 16 storeys beneath the meeting place. As long as the building isn't too tall.
>>
sheeeiiiit

is it still going?
>>
>>42214359
No.
>>
>>42214359
It seems it's wrapped up for today.

But fear not anon! For QD has stated he is prepared to run another thread sometime this week, perhaps on Wodin's day!

Don't judge me, I've been following the quest non stop since it started.
>>
>>42211872
>We remembered to warn the Commonwealth that there's another, hostile Hive out there, right?
We'll trade for that information.
>>
They're going to keep us in quarantine for a longgg time aren't they.

QD isn't ready to let us read the minds of heads of state.
>>
>>42214399
Technically, that research is still a fair ways away from completion.
>>
I can already tell we're going to have such a great time with our new human friends.

They might not find it so great though.
>>
>>42213992
>>Send pods to Barnard, Patherfound, Chandra, Andromeda, Teegarden, First Landing, Strife, Tempest, The Commons

I've been trying to have the fixed guns on light fleet ships replaced with blasters.
>>
It occurs to me that the entirety of our forces are ones we have patrolling or on active standby. We should start laying reserve forces, hive drones that go into hibernation as soon as they are hatched. Hibernating drones have no upkeep so after the laying costs and a single day upkeep we'd be paying nothing on them while they remain in storage ready to be woken up in the wake of some emergency.

This may not apply to ships as we only have a limited space in which to store them and constructing any more is an investment in resources, however there is no reason we cannot begin laying reserve swarms right away in much larger numbers than we would normally lay because we don't plan on paying upkeep on them.
>>
>>42214886
Nice thinking anon, i wholeheartedly support this idea.

But we could maybe actually make hibernating ships. We basically fill ships with lots of hibernating drones and send them to a location in empty space which only we know and tell them to hibernate. And then we pick them up when we need it. Space is BIG, they shouldn't be discovered.
>>
>>42214886

Or we could just park our reserve ships in the interstellar void.
>>
>>42214886
Great idea. We should really talk about this next thread.

>Uplink on the left monitor

I missed the second thread. Shit.
>>
>>42217765
No you didn't.

Did you just want an excuse to bump from page 10 for no reason.
>>
Since this thread is alive anyway: While Taidarens are getting us a four-finger discount on a holo-printer.

Once the Taidaren 'doctors' are implanted, we can have the doctors suddenly have a stroke of inspiration that they test on new patients, and realize that parasites will quickly implant themselves given the right stimuli, allowing much faster distribution of the things without a surgery bottleneck.

Rather than having our clones give that kind of suspicious unsolicited advice.

And while we have access to cameras in Decker's room to check that he or Coco is still there, he admitted he hacked them and the feed could be faked at any time. Prank incoming. But if it's after the flies hatch, it should be too late.
>>
>>42217895
bump
>>
Aw crap, the internet rejects will want to know how to address our group of agents and who they work for.

What do we say we are. The Family? That sounds like a mafia.
