Become The Dragon Quest 4

You are Kotijah, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Yesterday you went on a walk through the woods, got lost, and had a weird vision, and then met Sena's older brother Gil. Turns out he's been stalking you and Sena to make sure Sena is safe. Nice. You also finally got some sign that Sena does actually trust you when she accepted your hug, so at least you're 80% sure that the thief doesn't think you're going to hurt her.

That night you had a strange dream, a figure bathed in flames with eyes of molten gold. It turns out that every night you've been dreaming of your draconic ancestor, who cursed your bloodline and punishes anyone who doesn't live up to his expectations. Something about his children rising against him and siding with humans? You told him you'd do things your own way, and seek power through cooperating with others and burning your enemies to dust. He seemed to approve, since he gave you the power to sing fire into existence.

When you woke up Gil taught you how to use a bow and you hunted for a bit before heading off towards town once more. Some strange wolves attacked and one of them bit Sena. You managed to kill them both with Gil and Sena's help, and you noticed that their blood was black, but the bodies rotted away to nothing before you could examine them further. Sena's bite wound was turning purple, so you sent Gil off to find some herbs, used your firesinging to cauterize her wound, and now you're back on the road.

You're pretty sure that the bards don't do it on purpose anymore. Sad and dramatic moments were always described with rain and thunder, but with the light drizzle starting to set in you're beginning to wonder if the gods have a sense of humor and like to make miserable people more miserable. The rain isn't heavy enough to hamper your travel, just enough to be annoying.

Sena isn't doing well. Twice you've had to stop to take breaks while she rested. The first time her arm looked the same as it had before, but the second time her whole forearm from elbow to fingertips was purple, almost black. Since then she's been riding on Gil's back, though that slowed your pace a bit. You can see the village ahead of you, but it'll be dark by the time you get there. The bridge isn't that far away though, and you decide to regroup there and plan. Gil is the first to speak.

“I can't go back to the village after what happened. By now everyone has figured out I killed him.”

You nod a bit, moving a little further under the wooden roof. The bridge is covered, almost assuredly for this exact purpose. Either that or too many accidents involving slippery wooden planks after a rain.

“I'll take Sena in myself then. I won't know my way around town though.”

Gil gently lowers Sena to the ground. She's panting softly, the drawing the blanket tightly around herself.

“I'll make you a map then. It should be fine, right?”

We should probably ask the town's equivalent to a medical professional if they've seen these zombie wolves before.

The map will be fine, if Gil gets caught he's a dead man
>>
“The map should be good enough. If I need you then I'll set off a signal or something. Maybe a giant burst of flame into the sky.”

Gil rolls his eyes and grabs the wineskin, heading down from the bridge to the river itself.

“I'll watch your pack for you, unless you wanna haul everything into the town with Sena as well.”

You crouch a bit and slip off your pack, opening it up to check the contents for anything you're going to need in town. The coins for sure, and you'll bring the sword for protection.

“I don't think I'll need all of it, no. I'll just grab one or two more things.”

Sena sits up slowly and gives you a weak smile.

“It'll stop soon, right...? The pain?”

You nod and pat Sena gently on the headas she moves behind you to climb onto your back.

“It'll stop soon enough.”

Gil returns with the filled wineskin and sets it by your pack, pulling some chalk from his pocket, as well as a flat piece of wood.

“You'll have to keep this dry if you can, but the directions are pretty simple. You'll want to look for a church. It's the big white building near the middle of town. A few doors to the left of it you'll find a shop with bottles in the window, and a sign advertising it as an alchemist's. That's the one you want. Kat is a total hack at most things and most of her elixirs don't work, but she knows more about diseases and poisons than the priests at the church. They won't help Sena until after morning service tomorrow, but Kat should see her through the night.”

You nod and rise to your feet. Time to play hero.

“See ya.”

Gil gives you a small wave and packs up your things, strapping on your pack and heading in the opposite direction.

“See you soon. I'll follow at a safe distance.”

You decide to take some food with you, as well as the blanket for Sena, and you head back out into the rain. It's getting worse, and by the time you reach the village it's pouring down hard. You're soaked, and so is Sena, and you have to shift her from your back to your arms to keep her out of the downpour. You're stopped by a stern looking man in leather armor, carrying a spear. He lots worn and tired and just as sick of this weather as you are.

“State your business. We've got a murderer on the loose and we're not letting anyone in or out without a valid reason while we catch them.”

You shift the blanket just enough to expose Sena's arm. The man takes a sudden step back, eyes widening.

“What in the world...?”

You cover Sena back up and adjust your hold on her.

“This girl was attacked by wolves not too far from here. I need to take her to the church right away so they can examine her. If I don't hurry she's going to die, and if the people at the church can cure her it's better that they figure out now before anyone else gets attacked.”

The man hesitates for a moment, before nodding.

“The church is on the main road, you can't miss it. It's all locked up right now, but you might be able to get some help for her if you knock at the back door. Sometimes they have an evening service, and some of the priests might be awake.”

With a nod you head into the village. It's a much nicer place than your home town, with buildings that are more than just simple shacks and crude cottages. There's plaster and cut timbers on display here, and many buildings even have a second story. Most of the buildings are dark or only have a few candles visible behind the shutters, so most of the people in town are probably asleep or close to it.

You decide to head right for the church first. Who knows, if the guard was right then maybe you can get Sena some treatment tonight. You hurry down the road towards the white building in the center, before slowing to a halt. Every other building looks decently constructed, but this church looks immaculate. Someone took great care to make it look like a shining structure of pure light, and it sparkles in the rain. There's also a strange feeling in the air when you look at it, a sort of soft warmth. A moment later you find yourself at the front doors with no memory of taking the steps between. Odd.

You make your way to the back of the church and find it lit by two torches on either side. The doors at the front were a brilliant white, but this is sturdy oak with blackened metal bracers, and you don't feel the same pull as before. You knock firmly, but there's no immediate response.

You press your ear to the door and listen as closely as you can. There's soft chanting beyond, like some sort of religious ceremony is going on, but that's all you can make out. You knock one last time but there's no response. Disheartened, you turn to walk away. Sena coughs a bit, and you stop short at the sound of the door being flung open.

A woman stands in the doorway wearing only a sheet and blushing like mad. She's pretty, and if she were clad in formal robes she'd look exactly like you'd expect a priestess of this church to look.

"Hello? Do either of you require assistance? I heard someone coughing out here."

You ask her what the blight is and how to help Sena, and the woman hesitates.

"The blight is the tool of foul necromancers. It poisons life, corrupts it and then drives the dead to imitate the living. The wolves that attacked you, they suffered from it as well. When the sickness passes, the sufferers feel strong and well, but then the hunger sets in, and they are lost for good. All you can do for now is tend to her and keep her comfortable. I'm sorry..."

She closes the door, and you hear the sound of a lock, and then a heavy chain. With nowhere else to go, you set out for the alchemist's shop. It's easy enough to find, though the rain continues to get worse. You can see a cloaked figure leaving the shop, which is completely dark.

Kat shakes her head and grins.

"God damn it Gil. Always leaving me to pick up your loose ends. Some boyfriend you are... Come with me."

She pulls out a small key and unlocks the shop, pushing open the door.

"Let's see how bad it is."

You follow her inside. The shop smells of musk and fruit, the shelves lined with bottles claiming to be all manner of potion and balm. Kat sets about lighting some candles and removes her cloak.

"I was on my way to church for an evening of worship, so I hope you understand when I say I want compensation."

She clears off a table and motions for you to set Sena down. In the dim light you can see the origin of her nickname. They're pinned down, but she has a set of catlike ears atop her head.

You lay Sena down and Kat pulls the blanket off of her. Sena is sweating and shivering, and her whole arm has turned purple. Every few breaths she lets out a gasp or whimper, and Kat sighs a bit.

She grabs some bottles from the shelves and pulls a few from behind the counter, along with a mortar and pestle, some flasks and a small metal stand.

Alchemy, you quickly learn, is bullshit. Not abhorently so, but it's much more akin to cooking than you expected. Twice Kat makes you do something, looks over your results and tells you it's close enough, and twice you get the sneaking suspicion that she's playing it completely by ear.

As the night wears on Kat occasionally gives Sena doses of the potions she pulled from the walls, each time mixing in some of what you've been working on.

"I don't sell finished potions to anyone unless I know it's worth my while, but a few ingredients will turn these into something useful."

Sena seems to at least stabilize, and you're learning quite a bit about mixing up brews from Kat bossing you around. Dawn is approaching soon though.

“Fine then. But before you get excited, I'm part dragon on my mother's side. So any crazy concoctions you make will need to take that into consideration.”

Kat's eyes light up when you say that, and you almost immediately regret mentioning your heritage.

“Oh? So you're saying that you've got dragon blood? Impure, sure, but I could do so much with that...”

You sigh and roll your eyes a bit.

“The deal is to play science project, not to play blood donor. If you want my blood then we'll have to work out a different deal.”

Kat nods a little bit and immediately pulls out a needle from behind the counter.

If you're going to get anywhere on your journey to become a dragon you'll need connections and power. Connections like Kat might help, but being able to rely on your own skills might be more important if you can't get in touch or can't cover the payment. And so you relent. You pull up your sleeve and present your wrist to Kat, who promptly takes a sample of your blood. She only takes a small amount, enough to fill her syringe, and then hurries over to the counter and gets to work, spouting all sorts of nonsense as she works. When you tell her you don't understand a thing, she just smiles at you.

“Well, you know how cooking works, right? You heat something and then it changes. You combine two things and you get something else. Alchemy is exactly like that. I could give you a recipe book and push you out the door, but that won't teach you alchemy. To be a good alchemist, you need to go beyond that. You need to get a feel for your ingredients, understand them, and be able to fill in the blanks on your own.”

By the time the sun is about to rise, Kat has talked your ear off about alchemy, from the fundamental principles to how to prepare different kinds of ingredients. Metals are powdered unless you need them to dissolve slowly, always slice your plants, never chop, and when grinding you want an even grind more than you want fine powder. All in all you think you retained most of it.

I'll be back for that sample. Also we're gonna talk all about Gil.

Time to understand some theology.
>>
“I'm off to take Sena to the church.”

Kat nods a bit, busying herself with mixing up some kind of paste. It's bright red and seems to be glowing softly.

“Do what you've gotta do. I'll be here when you get back. Oh, and tell Fifi that I'll be there tonight for what she owes me. You interrupted me tonight, but tomorrow night I have a debt to settle with her.”

You scoop Sena up carefully and head outside, hugging the girl to your chest. With the sun rising over the village, you notice that almost no one is leaving their homes. Most of the people coming out onto the streets are coming from the front of the church, a multitude of the villages people emerging like drunks from a bar at closing time, some holding their heads, some cheering softly, and some quietly looking for a place to get themselves in order. Standing by the door, dressed as regally as you expected last night, is the priestess you met at the back door, all smiles and fond wishes to the congregation.

The back door seems like the safe bet, and you head around the church towards it. The building doesn't seem to glow the same way as it did last night. The light isn't so pale and brilliant. Now it just seems warm and comforting. The back entrance doesn't seem to have anyone coming or going, and you walk right up to knock. You're greeted with silence for a few moments, before a man dressed in similar robes to the priestess opens the door with a smile.

“Come in, come in! How can the Church of the Sun and Moon help you today?”

He doesn't wait for an answer, gently pulling you inside and ushering you inwards down the hall. The walls are polished wood and the floor is worked stone. Marble, maybe. But marble isn't so stark white, and it doesn't seem to glimmer with an inner energy as though it were alive.

“My friend was attacked by a wolf and she has the blight. I need someone to help her.”

The man nods, the kind of knowing nod that tells you that he knows exactly what the next step is.

“Well, my child, there is much we can do for her here. Did you want her cremated or entombed in the catacombs?”

He pauses and looks out a window, squinting a little and turning his amulet around, the moon symbol replaced with a golden sun.

“Sorry about that, I had nearly forgotten the time. We can heal her, certainly. All we ask in return is a donation. However much you are able to give is fine. Those who choose to donate more are entitled to certain privileges within the walls of the church.”

You don't think he's going to tell you how much qualifies you for what.

You pull out a gold piece and hand it to the priest. He takes a moment to examine it, nodding slowly, before smiling cheerfully at you.

“For your donation, your friend will be attended to and you have free access to out pantries. In addition, Priestess Fiona will assist you in any fashion that you need for the duration of your stay.”

He pockets the coin and holds out his arms, reaching for Sena.

You don't make a move to offer Sena to him.

“Sorry, but I'll rest when Sena is where she needs to be.”

The priest nods and turns, walking off down the hall a little ways. He takes you to the main room, a brightly lit and colorful chamber with pews, an altar of the same bright white stone, and several priests and priestesses running around cleaning up. There are stains everywhere, and they're dutifully scrubbing the place down from top to bottom.

The priest heads for the altar and pats it gently, and two priests quickly scrub it, wipe it down and then dust it, laying out a fresh cloth over it. They bow to the priest and go back to their previous tasks, and he looks at you expectantly. You take that to mean that this is where Sena is going, and you lay her out on the altar delicately. The priest nods a little bit and smiles.

“This will take some time. Priestess Fiona will be here in a moment to take you to the library where you can wait for use to complete our rituals and heal your friend. It will take most of the day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to you upon your request for them.”

You accept the offered hand and follow Fiona as she leads you out of the main hall via a set of stairs, leading you down under the church to the basement. There's a series of doors along the hall you pass through, and there are muffled sounds behind each of them. She squeezes your hand each time, almost jumping from the noises.

Finally she leads you to another set of stairs, and below you there is nothing but darkness. Your next few steps feel like you're tumbling into nothingness, guided only by Fiona's hand, and then the world makes itself right again, and you find yourself in a black stone chamber lit by small silvery crystals in the walls and ceiling. The walls are lined with books from top to bottom, and in the center of the room are chairs, benches and a large bed-like structure covered in pillows.

“Welcome to our library. If you have need of anything at all just say the word.”

You decide to start with researching dragons, and you ask Fiona to help you look for books on the subject. She grabs a ladder and starts pulling down every book on the subject that she can find. Books on dragon history, myths, everything you could ever want to know. And then she pulls down a giant tome entitled The History of the Known World, 2286 Edition. She hauls it over to you, visibly struggling with the weight, and sets it down on a chair next to your own. You spend the next few hours pouring over the books and come to a few conclusions.

The world moves in cycles. The world began under the control of monsters, and then mortals came and carved out their niche. Since then it's been ebbing and flowing back and forth between the peaceful and calm rule of the humans and other races, and the wild domain of countless types of fiends, angels, dragons and other powerful creatures. You have a few possible culprits for your ancestor after only a light reading of the world's history, and you're sure there are others as well if he's as old as he insinuated.

As far as solid facts on dragons beyond their involvement as major players in the cycles of the world you're coming up short. Very little is mentioned in the books that stands up as fact, with each book contradicted by the next. The only recurring themes are the things you know from fables and stories you heard growing up from your father, about how dragons flew, breathed different kinds of energy and were massive, almost unkillable creatures.
>>
Your work on discovering the history of the church is a lot simpler, with Fiona reciting from memory the story of its founding and spread. You have no reason to believe any of the books would tell you differently considering where you are.

She tells you that the cycle of the world extends beyond who controls it, and is reflected in many aspects of the world. The church worships only one such cycle, the cycle of light and darkness, day and night, the sun and the moon. By day the church promotes all that encourages life to grow and blossom, nurturing all things pure and good. At night the church becomes a den for hedonism and delight, allowing people to express in a safe environment the urges that might otherwise harm them. She blushes when she tells you that part, and you suddenly know more than you needed to about why she was naked last night.

The magic of the priests also follows that cycle, infusing the holy sites with power relating to the time of day. During daylight hours the churches are places of healing and rest for those in need, with faithful worshipers giving their all to anyone who asks. And at night the healing magic turns to harm, rest becomes impossible, and the members of the faithful find themselves no longer needing to sleep through the night so that they have ample time to enjoy themselves.

The church spread quickly across the kingdom due partly to the positive ideals that it promoted during the day that gave it the facade it needed for other people to approve of the religion, but mostly due to the fact that the faithful could spend their days working hard and doing good deeds and their nights imbibing all manner of intoxicants and fucking each other senseless.

Fiona asks you if there's anything else you'd like to know.

You ask Fiona if the church has anything at all to do with dragons, or if they feature at all in any holy works. She nods and smiles cheerfully.

“Dragons embody the moon, as do all monsters, just as humans and other beings embody the sun. There are exceptions, of course, and lunar urges to be purged, but in the same way I'm sure there are good monsters out there in the world. All beings must seek balance and harmony, as it is the only way to truly master the self and be of use to the world. Even the lowest prostitute must work hard to be presentable and contribute to her society in some way, just as the fairest princess must keep from bottling up urges that, if left unchecked, could lead to mental imbalance that would put her kingdom in trouble.”

You snicker a bit when she says that and sit up.

“Is that so?”

Fiona nods slightly and tilts her head.

“Yes, it is. Why do you ask though?”

You slowly rise to your feet.

“The night is coming, Fiona. I am Kotijah the Firesinger, and I will become a dragon. I will embody the night to its fullest extent, if what you say is true. The cycle will continue, and the moon will rule the sky.”

By this point you're getting in her face a bit, speaking rather dramatically and having fun with it. It's kind of enjoyable to be so bombastic and out there, letting your pride shine through. After all, you deserve all that power and authority anyway, or you will one day. May as well let her know now that you're someone to keep an eye out for.

She doesn't seem to take it the way you intended though. She stammers and turns scarlet, backing away and looking around the room nervously. It reminds you vaguely of when those farm boys tried to hit on that merchant's daughter and she had no idea how to respond. Finally Fiona opens her mouth.

“I... Do you mean that... the world would become a place of hedonism...? Of violence and cruelty...? O-Or do you just mean that you will become the moon, and rule over the next cycle of night without destroying the light completely...?”

There's a note of hopefulness in her voice, but you're not sure which one she's hoping for.

The moon waxes and wanes, but the light is still there isn't it? I don't plan on destroying anything that doesn't give me cause to first. That being said the necromancers around here have annoyed me, a lot.
>>
“The moon has its own light, doesn't it? I haven't decided what sort of night I'm going to bring yet, but I don't intend for it to be truly dark. I'm not going to destroy everything, just the things that get in my way. Those who I call friends will have a place beside me. The only exception is necromancers, because one of them hurt my friend.”

Fiona nods and smiles, still bright red.

“Then... Then I'll help you if I can. You're human but you want to be a dragon... That... That's the perfect example of the ideals of our church! If you could accomplish that, you'd... you could be a herald for our faith! Teaching people to embrace hard work and diligence, but also intelligent indulgence!”

She seems to be getting quite worked up about this.

You nod a bit.

“I'll give you a sample of my power as proof of what will come in the future. But only so long as you swear to keep it quiet for now. It's the time of the sun, I can't just rise to the top by telling people to respect me. I have to earn it, right?”

Fiona nods vigorously, and you start to sing. It comes naturally to you, either because of practice or because of the place, but you don't feel any burning in your throat when the fire comes. It spills forth, surrounding Fiona, almost touching her, and she closes her eyes and stands very still with her hands together at her chest, almost as though she were praying. As the flames vanish, Fiona falls to her knees.

“I will carry your secret, Kotijah the Firesinger... If ever you have been of the Church of the Sun and Moon, I will happily oblige you to aid you on your journey. May your light shine from above to guide us ever forward, and your darkness swallow the land that we might lose ourselves in it.”

You're pretty sure you've started a one-woman cult with that display. This is either the best or worst possible outcome, and you can't quite make up your mind which. At least she isn't acting like you're trying to hit on her anymore.

Both sounds good to you, and you let her know. Fiona bows and heads for the stairs. The more you talk to her, the less those robes make sense on her. She'd be better suited to wearing a maid outfit or something, maybe with a religious necklace. Well, aside from the zealotry.

You turn your attention back to the books. You don't think you'll find much more on dragons currently, and you figured out enough about the church already. You decide to just grab some books and see what you get.

A quick walk around the room grabbing whatever tome catches your eye ends with you carting a stack of books back to your reading spot. You start reading the covers to discern the titles. "Dueling and You! Combat Laws Across The Land", "Martial Styles of the Savage Territories", "The NEW Big Book of Magic", "So You Want To Save Lives: Becoming A Healer", "Steal This Book! Steal Everything!", "Tom", "Surviving The Apocalypse and Lesser Hazards", "Everything You Wanted To Know About Carnal Sin But Were Forbidden To Ask", and "Romantic Ballads of the 17th Retterian Kingdom". The book on martial techniques looks interesting, so you set the others aside for the moment and open it to take a look. The first section that catches your eye is about a fighting style used by the Bear clan of the Vhelin nation, using claws for striking and grasping. The techniques the book describes are mainly grabs, throws and ways to make use of superior grip strength. Before long you have the basic ideas worked out enough to be useful to you.

The more you eat, the more you realize how had been, and the more satisfying the sandwich becomes. It's the same with the drink, with the cool and refreshing fruit juice only becoming more refreshing the more you have.

"Do you know anything about necromancers near here? I want to find who hurt my friend."

Fiona perks up.

"There was a raid not to long ago. We sent some of our priests to help deal with a necromancer to the south. But he was killed a while ago. We're still cleaning up the mess..."

You nod and take a swig from the mug.

You finish up your meal and rise to your feet.

“I think it's time I head up to check on Sena. I want to be there when they get done.”

Fiona nods a little bit and offers her hand once more, and you take it so that she can lead you through the darkness ahead. You ascend the stairs and pass through the hallway lined with doors, which is silent now, and return to the main hall once again.

The priests are gathered around the altar and chanting. Sena is above the altar, hovering and surrounded by light, purple fluid dripping from the fingertips of her injured arm. It looks almost normal now, only a slight discoloration remaining, and you can see her scars have all but vanished as well. The priests all bring their song to an end with a sudden cheer and Sena's arm reverts to a healthy color all at once, her scars disappearing without a trace. She hovers back down to the altar, and she opens her eyes to find herself sitting on top of it, surrounded by strange men she doesn't know. You're not surprised at all when she screams.

You run over to the altar, pushing past a few of the priests to get to Sena and smiling at her.

“Hey! Sena, it's alright! You're safe!”

Sena launches herself from the altar at you and you stumble back a bit, but you don't fall down. She's hugging you tightly, face buried against your chest.

“Can we get out of here...? The priests make me nervous...”

You pat her head gently and nod a little.

You keep Sena close, ignoring the disappointed faces on the priests for now, and start heading for the door only for Fiona to step in front of you.

“Thank you for coming to visit us today, Kotijah. Please, consider this a token of my gratitude for sharing with me your stories during our talks.”

She kisses you on the cheek and smiles cheerfully.

“I will await your return to our church.”

You move around her and nod a little bit.

“I'm just getting Sena some fresh air, I'll be back in a bit, probably.”

Fiona turns bright red.

“O-Oh, I see. My mistake. I'm terribly sorry.”

Sena tugs your arm gently, and you resume your walk towards the doors. They open on their own, and you're greeted by the light of the midday sun.

You're glad that Gil's idea of watching from the shadows is literal. You find him not too far away, skulking in the shadows behind a crate. Sena runs over to him and hugs him tightly, and Gil returns the gesture, smiling softly before giving you a wary look.

Seeing Fiona before night falls is the wise option, you decide. There's no telling what will happen if you get caught up in their night activities, and you don't feel as though getting drugged up and taken advantage of would be a good use of your time.

The doors are still open when you go inside. The priests seem to have scattered for the most part, save a few younger ones finishing the cleaning you saw earlier. Fiona is nowhere to be seen.

You approach the nearest acolyte, a young man who is directing two others on proper polishing techniques, and ask him about Fiona. He turns to you, looks you up and down in confusion for a moment, and then smiles politely.

“Priestess Fiona? She's currently downstairs for her punishment. She opened the door to assist someone last night during the revel which is against the rules. She's currently unavailable to receive visitors at the moment. If you need her for something I could get some paper for a note so that she can read it when she comes out.”

While you're not the sneakiest person in the world, you do manage to slip past the distracted acolytes to the stairs after parting ways with the one you spoke to, and you head downstairs towards the hallway you saw before. It's easy enough to find Fiona's cell. She's crying softly, and you can't see any light coming from her room. She's all alone in the darkness.

As you near the door you can make out what she's saying. It's a prayer to the sun and moon for guidance, spoken between her whimpers. She's desperate for the light to find her and steer her right so that when darkness falls again she won't become confused or lose her way.

It stings your throat a bit but you manage it, a thin trickle of fire sliding under the door. You hear another gasp, and then quiet laughter.

“It tickles!”

You end your song and try to quiet her, but she continues to giggle for a few moments before she finally falls silent.

“I go where I please. You act like they could have stopped me anyway.”

You lean against the door, speaking slowly and clearly through a thin crack in the wood.

“I told you that I'd be back, and here I am, just like I said. Walls couldn't stop me, the acolytes couldn't stop me, and the cycle couldn't stop me either. You were supposed to wait here for the night to come, and here I am, the walking incarnation of the moon.”

You don't need to see through the door to know Fiona is trembling. You can hear her shifting against the door, feel it rock slightly against your hand.

“I... You're right... So... am I supposed to leave with you then? I... It's still light out, the sun still rules the sky, but... Tonight... do I break the rules and follow you where you lead?”

Hook. Line. Sinker. You contemplate the consequences of what you say next very carefully. On the one hand you could abduct her, you'll need someone to heal you and your companions and Fiona has a better idea than anyone else in your crew as to how to accomplish that. On the other hand, Fiona is the insider at the church, someone you can use to get in and out and advance your studies, but that would require staying here and putting your quest on hold. And either way, what you say next will shape how she sees you completely. You could become a person to be worshiped, or convince her that you're a secret to be kept hidden from the world, a close friend, a lover, a saint. You have plenty of options, and no reason to believe that Fiona wouldn't fall for any of them if you phrase it right.

You finally make up your mind. Taking her with you would have a lot of benefits in the long term, but for now you want to sit on this investment and make it work for you. It's not every day you get a religious fanatic obsessed with you.

“You're going to stay here where you're most useful to me and to your faith. The night is coming. Will they be ready for it? Can you really say that the others are all as faithful as you are? Because when the night comes, those who aren't truly faithful will fight it. They'll fight hard and lose against the change of the cycle. You need to be there to guide them. You need to rise up through the ranks of the church so that when the time comes you can protect them and help usher in the night.”

“I... I understand. I'll do my best. I'll work as hard as I can. And I won't let you down, Kotijah.”

You smile a little bit.

You rise to your feet and leave Fiona behind for the time being. You've got someone you can come back to for help now, and you can use her to access the library as needed, which is nice. Hopefully when the night comes she'll find a way to remain in a fit state to be useful tomorrow. For now, though, it's time to head elsewhere.

You slip up the stairs quietly and make it to the door without being noticed. An acolyte glances over at you on your way out, but you don't think they suspect anything. As you walk out onto the street you check the alley to see if Sena and Gil are there, but you don't see a trace of them.

Time to square up a debt and see what Kat has been working on in your absence. You head down to the alchemist's shop and are greeted by an enormous plume of smoke as you open the door. Kat is slumped against her desk, some sort of glass contraption full of colorful liquids in front of her, and she's breathing deeply from a hose attached to the topmost part of the device. Her pupils are dilated, her ears are standing up tall, and she's smiling lazily.

“Heeeey! It's my... my new favorite customer! How did it go? Did you... Did you tell Fiona...? How I'm gonna drink her under the table tonight, and... and do all kinds of naughty... things... What was I talking about? It sounded fun...”

Well, now you know why some many people try to get into alchemy. Kat looks trashed out of her mind right about now.

Kat laughs a little bit and takes an especially long drag, blowing out a large plume of smoke in your general direction.

“Enjoying myself! And as a side effect, learning! Your blood is amazing, you know. I added some to this stuff... And then pow! And then I put it into something I could smoke out of and I've been doing that ever since. It's been... Three spoonfuls of sulfur, one dried newt and a flask of whiskey since then.”

She pauses, looks at the device, and then resumes taking pulls.

“So you've been doing nothing but getting high? Did you at least learn something useful?”

Kat points to the device.

“This is totally useful though! It's, um... Well, it works, and that's the important thing.”

You attempt to change the subject.

“How did you get those ears?”

Kat perks up a little bit and spins on her chair with a giggle.

“That's a loooong story! You should ask Gil, he tells it better. He's such a good storyteller! You should ask him to tell you the one about the monkey and the sword and the corn field!”

This is getting you nowhere. You need her sober, or to at least figure out the right questions to be asking her in this state.

Screw this, you're sobering her up if it's the last thing you do. You decide to start with a classic.

“Where do you keep your water?”

Kat yawns a little bit.

“Why do you need water? I have plenty of ale for you to drink if you need some...”

Alright, once more with feeling.

“Do you have any special devices or potions to sober someone up.”

Kat nods a bit.

“I could probably mix one up if I wasn't so ooooout of it. But this is better!”

You decide to save fire for last, and instead make one last appeal to sanity.

“Kat, if you don't sober up right now then I won't be your test dummy for your experiments, and no more dragon blood.”

You've never seen someone go from calm to manic to calm again so quickly. The glass contraption is on the floor at your feet after she shoved it as hard as she could, liquids leaking out onto the floor and fizzing where they mix.
