Become The Dragon Quest 3

You are Kotijah, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

In the last day you've caught a deer, made a bow, and finally learned how to use that sword you've been carrying. You also got a gift from Sena, and wandered off into the woods to get food and found some berries. Score!

Only after eating the berries you got lost in the woods and had some kind of vision, and when you finally made your way back out Sena's brother was lurking around. Now you have to try to explain to him what just happened without digging your own grave.

The roll from the last thread was a 16.

You take a moment to assess the situation. Older brother, protective, probably knows how to use your bow better than you do, and despite not being visibly armed, neither was Sena when she pulled out her knife. He probably taught her that one. You opt to give him the honest truth and see what he makes of it.

“It was me, I think. I was hoping you could tell me what it was. I got lost, and the next thing I knew I was having a vision. The berries might have had something to do with it.”

He rolls his eyes.

“Right. I wouldn't have eaten any if they weren't safe. Look, if you're a sorcerer or something or just some kind of disguised monster trying to get by, fine, but unless you tell me what's going on, I'm not leaving my sister with you.”

Sena looks over at her brother and points her carving at him, before realizing her mistake and switching to the knife.

“Gil, I can make my own decisions. Kotijah and I have a deal, and you're the one who told me I was better off if you weren't around.”

Sena's brother, ostensibly named Gil, sighs a bit.

“You're not safe alone with her, Sena.”

“So come with us.”

Sena and Gil both turn to look at you, and part of you wonders if they had started to forget you were even there.

“If you're worried about your sister, then come with us instead of following at our heels or running ahead of us all the time.”

He looks you over briefly.

“Well, you don't seem like an all-powerful mage, but you could be a monster in disguise.”

You give him a nod.

“I'm going to be a dragon one day, if that counts.”

He looks dumbfounded by your statement, and Sena giggles at her brother's expression.

“Fine, fine... I'll travel with you, if only to keep Sena out of harm's way.”

First things first then.

“So Gil. Tell me about yourself. Sena's told me a little, but I'd rather hear it from you.”

Sena turns away and goes back to her carving.

“Oh boy, here we go...”

Gil jumps down from the ledge and moves to sit in front of you.

“I am Gil, short for Gilgali, and I was an apprentice to a carpenter. He attacked my sister so I murdered him in cold blood and fled with her before someone else could hurt her more. Anything else you want to know? We were orphans when the carpenter took us in. What else... Oh, I'm a pretty good shot with a bow.”

He's giving you a rather intense stare, and he doesn't seem to be in much of a mood to talk about the past, so you decide to turn your attention to Sena.

“What are you working on?”

Sena shows you the current state of the carving.

“I'm making a knight on a horse. If you're going to be a dragon, then you'll have to fight knights. You can practice your strategies if I make you some knights to go with your dragon. Like... chess, kinda? Something like that.”

You tussle Sena's hair gently, this time taking care not to mess it up too badly, and she smiles.

“Keep up the good work, Sena.”

Gil leers at you a little bit but says nothing, and you take his silence as the closest thing to approval you'll get right now.

“So... Kotijah, right? You're heading towards the capitol city, yes?”

You give him a nod, and he sighs, looking up at the sky.

“You'll never get in without the right papers, which means you'll need a sponsor or become someone worthy of entering through the gates on your own. It's not worth your time.”

You smile a little bit and grab your pack, pulling out the letter.

“Or I could just say that I'm delivering this and find a way to make that work for me.”

Gil looks at the letter for a moment, then at you.

“And what's that supposed to be then?”

He looks at Sena, who shrugs and smiles at him.

“Don't look at me, I didn't read her mail while I was looking for her food.”

You put the letter back into your pack for the moment.

“The important thing is that it's a way in, and I can use that as my way past the gates.”

Gil huffs a bit, and that makes you smile. Clearly he doesn't like being proven wrong.

You let Gil rest, warning him that he'll have the last watch for the night and to be prepared for it.

“Just wake me when it's my turn then.”

You turn to Sena and tell her that it's time to sleep, and she flicks her knife back and forth through the air a few times.

“I'm almost done, just give me a minute. I want to get this last part right.”

You nod and move closer to her to watch her work. The knight is a lot less polished than the dragon was, though that might be because it's not done yet. You don't know how much labor she intends to put into this one.

“Are you happy that your brother is coming with us?”

Sena glances at her brother, who is doing a very good impression of someone falling asleep, and then at you.

“Honestly? Not really. Not like this anyway. He's not normally like this, but ever since... He's been kind of a jerk.”

You nod a little bit at that. Not that it wasn't understandable, but still.

You rest a hand on her shoulder as she turns back towards her work, and when she shifts to face you again you give her a nod and a smile.

“Yep. He's a jerk. But not without good reason. He killed someone, and it's weighing on him. He felt like he had to send his own sister away to protect her. He's been through a lot. But it'll pass, so long as he stops trying to play hero and keeping it all to himself. He's got the two of us to talk to, he'll come around. Be patient.”

You can hear Gil stirring slightly and contemplate throwing something at him to see if he reacts. As you lower your hand, Sena catches your sleeve. She doesn't quite meet your gaze, like she's searching for the right words.

“I don't know why you keep being nice to me. And I don't know why you're sticking up for my brother. You don't know either of us, but you're letting us both eat your food and you didn't attack me for stealing from you. It doesn't make any sense to me. But...”

She releases your sleeve and gives you a warm smile, finally looking up at you.

“Thank you. I mean it.”

You spread your arms apart slowly and smile at her.

“You're welcome.”

Sena regards you warily for a few moments. She puts down her knife and the figure, looking nervous. She looks over at her brother for a moment, slowly bringing her hands to her chest. She closes her eyes, inhales, and flops against your chest, shaking a little. You move your hands and slowly embrace her, keeping it light. One hand on her shoulder, the other on her back. She doesn't shy away, but after a few moments she does sit up. You can't tell if she's flustered or trying to suppress a panic attack, and she goes right back to her carving.

You don't think Sena will be doing very much talking for the rest of the evening now, so you turn your attention to the days ahead. At your current pace you've got three days to go, but now you've got extra pairs of hands to tend to camp chores. In the morning you'll have to see how cooperative Gil is in terms of carrying his own weight. You turn in for the night.

You don't remember your dreams. When you were younger you always used to wake up screaming, but you could never remember what it was you saw or why it frightened you so much. It drove your parents crazy, and for a time they thought you just wanted attention. Eventually you grew numb to whatever silent peril lurked in your dreams, unknowable and awful.

As the world slips away from you, you find yourself floating. The darkness around you gives way to fire, and the same eyes from your vision slowly appear before you, emerging from the flames. They look right through you, seeing some aspect of you that you can't name, some vital thing that you instinctively want to keep hidden. The absolute helplessness chills you to the bone in spite of the roaring inferno around you.

“So now my blood awakens at last. Weak and pathetic, but awake.”

The fire around you slowly coalesces into the form of a dragon, and the golden eyes settle into the figure's sockets.

“Tell me your name, child. What do I call this walking humiliation?”

“Kotijah. Are you my ancestor? Or my power?”

The figure laughs, and it feels like the world around you is shaking.

“Ancestor? No. Nor am I part of you. My spirit resides inside all who carry the curse of my blood.”

The figure reaches out and touches you, and you feel yourself spinning wildly, though the figure remains in your view all the while.

“I was once the terror of this continent. I burned kingdoms to the ground, and my hoard contained everything of value in the land. I had countless progeny, and lived a life so grand that you cannot even begin to comprehend it. I was akin to a god. And then mortal men turned my children against me. A war was fought, a battle lasting for many years. I never rested, never had a moment's peace, and at least I was slain. With my dying breath I cursed my foolish children, and all who would carry my blood within them. Those that pleased me and carried on my ways were given small boons, and those who continued to side with humans met terrible ends.”

The world stops spinning, and the flames slowly fade, revealing brilliant red scales and the menacing face of a dragon. His whole form is immaculate, fierce and proud.

“Which will you be, I wonder? Your bloodline had grown so weak and diluted that my influence was wearing thin, until you happened to stir it from its slumber with your little trick. So now I will present you with the same choice your innumerable ancestors have been offered. Will you live as I lived, burning all creation to the ground and ripping from the world the glory my kin deserve? Or will you abide by the ideals of fools and cowards, seeking peace and using your strength for others?”

You steel yourself, mustering up all of your courage.

“Your eyes might see through me, but your gaze is narrow. I can do both. I can burn those who oppose me to the ground and raise myself up as the leader of this land. I can use my strength to shepard and protect them, and in return they'll shower me with riches. I choose both. I will be the foe that strikes terror into my enemies and the ally my friends can't do without.”

The dragon roars at you, jaws barely an inch from your face. You can see the embers in his gullet, the flickering flames of his breath ready to consume you. And then he snaps his jaws closed and begins to chuckle.

“Fine then. We shall see how long that lasts. I will grant you a single boon for amusing me. It's rare to see one such as yourself actually showing any brains. I could give you glimpses of wisdom from your forebearers, as you've experienced before, and help you tap into forgotten knowledge. I could awaken your fire and enhance your body, to give you strength and agility beyond your current form. Or perhaps you prefer the subtle arts? I could give you a silver tongue and silent steps, to ensure your foes never see the knife before you slip it into their backs. Or perhaps you'd like to know what real power is?”

His golden eyes are judging you silently, waiting for your choice and to see what sort of entertainment you'll provide him.

What will you choose?

“I want power.”

The dragon's face is almost a grin when you say that.

“Good. Perhaps you aren't a useless daughter after all.”

He opens his mouth again and you are consumed by fire. You can feel your body heat up slowly, part of your brain telling you it's taking years, and the rest believing it's only an instant. All you know is that the next thing you're aware of is a deep ache and a burning sensation across every inch of your body. You try to scream in pain but the sound dies in your throat, replaced with greater heat, and the sound of your own voice. You can hear yourself singing, and a gout of flame erupts from your lips. The dragon sneers.

“I dub you Kotijah the Firesinger. You lack the lungs for true firebreathing yet, but a human voice will do as a vessel for now. Instead of words, I have linked your fire to your songs. In time, perhaps, you will find the song that burns nations and sing it in my honor.”

The ache begins to subside, and the burning fades, but your throat still feels warm. When you open your mouth to say something, to respond to him somehow, you suddenly find yourself awake. Your throat feels a little sore, and your tongue feels a little like you burnt it. It's morning, and Sena and Gil are sitting by the fire eating breakfast. They don't seem to notice that you're awake.

You sit up for a moment and rub your eyes. Breakfast smells wonderful, and you push your blanket aside.

“Morning...”

Sena looks over at you and smiles, offering you a skewer of venison.

“Morning. Did you sleep well?”

You take a moment to process her words. Did you?

“Well enough. I think I had another vision.”

Gil snorts when you say that and looks over at you.

“Uh-huh. And what did that vision tell you? That you're on a foolhardy mission that's going to backfire spectacularly?”

You shake your head.

“Nah. But watch this. It's safe, I promise.”

You throw your head back and focus, singing the first words that come to mind. Strangely, you find yourself speaking in a different language, and three words in you exhale a column of fire straight up into the air. Your throat stings a bit and you cough a bit, grabbing your wineskin and guzzling down some mead to soothe it. When you look over at Sena and Gil, Gil has Sena's knife and has jumped in front of her, eyes narrowed.

“I already told you.”

You take a bite of venison and chew it, swallowing after a moment.

“I am Kotijah, and I'm going to be a dragon.”

You sit down with the skewer and start to eat your breakfast, locking eyes with Sena. She looks frightened, but you silently mouth “Bonus points” to her and she calms a bit. Gil, however, remains on his guard, keeping between you and Sena as you eat your meal.

Time to decide what to do with your morning. You could train some more, go for a hunt, try to work out how your new powers work... The list goes on. The things that feel most pressing to you are working out your new abilities and chatting with Gil and Sena to make sure they've still got your back. Sena shouldn't take much convincing, but you probably spooked Gil a bit with your fire trick and it's not like he was really on your side anyway.

You decide it's time to play nice first and foremost. You need to make sure that the people you're traveling with trust you enough not to point their knives at you. Then you'll figure out this whole firesinging mess. You finish up your breakfast, take another sip of mead, and look Gil dead in the eye.

“I'm not gonna hurt you.”

Gil chuckles dryly.

“Right. Sure.”

You take another swig of mead and cap the wineskin.

“What I mean is, I have no intention of hurting you, or Sena. I'm trying to become a dragon. I'm descended from a powerful dragon and I want to become one as well. But that doesn't mean that I'm going to harm you. If there were a way to prove that to you then I would.”

Gil lowers the knife slowly and passes it back over to Sena.

“There isn't one. And I can't just take you at your word on this. So I'm going to need you to swear something to me, and as time goes on, if I think you'll keep your word, then I'll trust you. I want you to swear that if something happens to me, you'll look after Sena. Regardless of the risk, and even if it's a hassle for you, I want your word that my sister will be safe. If you can swear to that then I'll let this rest for now. But one misstep and we're back to me keeping her safe instead. Understand?”

>>
“Deal.”

You stick your hand out for Gil to shake.

“I don't want to see her harmed either.”

Gil looks at your hand for a moment and sighs, taking it and shaking.

“You only had to swear it, the handshake isn't necessary. But thank you. She's all I've got left now.”

Sena rolls her eyes.

“Always being dramatic... You know, we could find you a stage show to join if you want.”

You chuckle a bit.

“Why not put on a production of my life story once we get past the whole 'becoming a dragon' step?”

Gil pinches the bridge of his knows and sighs softly. You rise to your feet once more and stretch. Time to see if you can get this whole firesinging thing under control with some tests.

You start off with some vocal warm ups, and you hope they won't result in a fire. You walk a good distance away from Gil and Sena and start to sing, closing your eyes and following the tune of an old folk song from your home town. Nothing seems to happen, which is nice. At least you know that you can sing without raining down fire upon anyone close enough to hear you.

Now the hard part. You try to invoke your firesinging, or whatever the right verb is. You put your all into it, trying to coax something into happening. You manage to get the right words, you think, the language shifting once more, but your throat feels dry and you feel like you're not hitting the right notes. You manages to exhale more fire, but it's a smaller amount and your throat feels really raw now. This is probably something you should use sparingly for now, at least until you can do it without hurting your voice. Come to think of it, maybe this is how your mother lost her voice?

You head back to the others and finish up your mead. You'll have to get some water soon. You turn to Gil and open your mouth to ask for his help, only to find that he's inspecting the bow you made with a smug smile on his face.

“What's this supposed to be?”

Sena smiles cheerfully.

“I think it's a very good first effort.”

Gil shakes his head and pulls out his own knife. It's longer than Sena's, and has a slight curve at the tip. He starts carving into your bow, whittling the shaft and thinning parts of it out.

“Sure, a good first effort, but this thing won't fire straight unless... you... do... this!”

He scrapes down the cut marks to smooth them a bit and offers it to you.

“Where are your arrows? I'll tidy those up too.”

When you inform him that you have none, Gil takes a slow, even breath, and walks over to the tree, scaling it rapidly before jumping down with his own bow and a quiver of arrows, maybe two dozen or more.

“Alright. You wanna make shitty bows and not even make arrows? Go for it. Or I can teach you how to shoot, how to make proper arrows, and maybe by the end you'll even be decent at both. No promises though.”

You take your bow back from him and admit that his skills are worth learning. You neglect to inform him that if he continues to be a smug jerk then you're going to smack him. But he'll learn, given enough time and enough smacks. Gil puts his knife away and turns towards the path you had taken the night before.

“Let's head to the woods first. We can get some wood for arrows and try to find something to use for target practice.”

You follow behind him with a nod and wave to Sena as you leave. From the look of things she's started work on her next figure, and she waves at you in return. It isn't long before you reach the woods once more, and Gil immediately sets about trying to find any sticks or branches that you can use.

“No, no... See, the problem is that you need something straight and sturdy enough that you can make a decent arrow out of it... It only needs to last for one shot, obviously, but...”

You shrug and join him in his hunt, and before long you have a decent pile to pick through. He pulls out his knife and pauses.

“Watch what I do, and then you try, alright?”

He starts whittling the first of three arrows, showing you how to sharpen the point without throwing off the weight, how to smooth the body of the arrow while keeping it straight, and how to notch the end without splitting the whole thing. You give it a try, and he coaches you the whole way through. Maybe he's not such a jerk after all.

You decide to practice a little more, and as you do you turn your focus to thoughts of the dragon. If he was as powerful as they say, surely there would be some record of him somewhere. Or perhaps it occurred so long ago that time has forgotten him? You decide to try to tap into whatever you hit upon last night, but nothing is forthcoming. You'll have to ask the next time you dream of him, or research it somewhere.

You make eleven more arrows for a total of twelve and hand them over to Gil for inspection. Two he snaps in half before even really looking at them, and another he tosses over his shoulder. The remaining nine get scrutinized to hard you'd swear that he was the one trying to set things on fire with magic. He hands them back with an approving nod.

“Passable. Now then, what to use as a target...”

You ask Gil what he recommends for target practice, and he points to the nearest tree, only a few feet away.

“Let's start with that. You'll want proper form, first off. If you can't even hit that thing and get the arrow to actually launch there's no point in putting it any further.”

You suppose you have to agree with that logic, and you grab an arrow, knocking it and pulling it back. Immediately Gil is waving his hands and correcting you, making little adjustments here and there. He throws his hands up in the air after trying to get your grip right for the third time and just steps behind you, grabbing your wrists gently and guiding you from there.

“Just breathe in, breathe out, and stay exhaled. Then let it go.”

You keep quiet about Gil's actions, letting him teach you how to shoot and focusing on getting a good feel for what constitutes good form. The first shot misses, and Gil takes the bow for a moment to clean up some more of your work. The next one scrapes the tree trunk, and the third hits it dead on. When Gil releases you, you notice that he's smiling like he's enjoying himself. You try a few shots on your own, a few going a bit wide, but most of them striking the tree. He runs around collecting your missed shots for you and after you hit with (and break) all nine of your arrows he gives you a nod and a pat on the shoulder.

“Nicely done. Now, let's try some real shooting, shall we?”

He offers you a single arrow from his own quiver and points to a tree about twenty feet away.

“Tenth hit and then we go back, alright?”

You take a moment to go through all the steps again. Breathe in then out. You grip the bow tightly and knock the arrow. You can already tell it'll be a straighter shot, his arrow is of much better make than yours. You close your eyes, take a deep breath, and as you exhale you open your eyes and fire.

There are a few things in this world that you're especially proud of. You've got good parents, you're part dragon and you can literally sing fire. And now, apparently, you can crack trees with an arrow. The bark splinters from your shot, which is as dead on as it can be, the arrow lodged into the mark you made, and a thin crack runs up and down from the shot a good three inches on either side. You're not sure if it was sheer dumb luck or not, and you don't care.

Gil looks completely dumbfounded by your shot, glancing back and forth between you and the mark you left on the tree before walking over to it and trying to yank his arrow out. He succeeds in getting it out only by using both feet on the trunk and pulling with all his might, and nearly lands on his ass in the process. He takes a few stumbling steps and sighs a bit.

“Well done. You've successfully killed a perfectly innocent tree.”

He smiles.

“I think you've got the hang of it now.”

You take the arrow back from Gil and ask him for a few more so you can go hunting. He obliges, begrudgingly, and goes back to the stick pile.

“I'll have to make a bunch more arrows in case you lose any. Just be careful, alright? I don't want to hear you yelling that you've hurt yourself.”

Aaand back to being a jerk. Well, that's to be expected. You start walking off, this time making sure to claw at the trees you pass by to leave a clear route back to the edge of the woods. You keep your eyes peeled for tracks and you listen closely to every sound in the forest. Eventually you stumble upon a small clearing. You repeat what you just practiced, taking your time to line up the shot. The rabbit stands up slightly as you take aim as if trying to get a better view of you to see if you're a threat. That's just the opening you needed. You exhale and release the arrow.

You never knew rabbits screamed before now, and the sound almost terrifies you for a second before you realize the source of it.

You walk over carefully as the rabbit thrashes, unable to get a good grip on the ground to get away with the arrow sticking out of its front. You should have taken Gil's knife with you. Instead you knock another arrow and take aim, this time for the head. You really need to work on making these kills cleaner. You let the arrow loose and silence it.

The noise has probably scared off everything for a good distance, so you remove the arrows from the rabbit and slip your bow over your shoulder, carrying it back to camp in one arm. Gil and Sena are chatting as they carve, for a few moments you can imagine the pair working together in the shop, making things side by side while learning a trade, Gil mastering various skills to take over the shop and Sena working alongside her big brother to help him out.

You bring the rabbit over and set it near the fire, and Gil offers you the knife in exchange for his arrows, which he starts cleaning and inspecting. You twirl the knife for a moment, and get to work.

You get some bones, hide and the innards, as well as enough meat for a hearty stew. This time you're more careful with the tendons, and immediately set them out to dry to make the most use of them. You start to pack up some of your supplies, keeping the rabbit meat away from the cooked food and berries. You should probably reorganize your gear a bit.

Current Possessions
1 Pack containing Rope, 1 Blanket, 3 Candles, 1 Match, 1 Flint and Steel, 3 Dice, 1 Letter, 1 Farmhand outfit
1 Pouch containing 3 Copper pieces (CP), 9 Silver pieces (SP), 5 Gold pieces (GP)
1 Bindle containing 2 Portions of deer meat, 5 portions of berries
1 Deer hide, containing 1 Collection of assorted deer parts, 1 Collection of assorted rabbit parts, 3 Portions of uncooked rabbit meat
1 Wineskin, empty
1 Mercenary outfit
1 Set of mercenary armor
2 Pairs of heavy boots
2 Pairs of sturdy leather gloves
1 Sword
1 Bow

You turn to Sena and Gil, who have taken the hint and begun their own packing.

“Let's get going. We've got places to be, right? We can wrap up the rest of this when we make camp tonight. And while we're walking, you two should maybe consider your futures. I'm off to go and become a dragon, you should set some goals too.”

And with that you head for the road, waiting for your companions to follow. Sena and Gil exchange a few quick words that you don't quite hear, and they join you after a few minutes. With a smile you turn towards the road and start walking.

You don't hear the sound of the wolves until they're almost upon you.

Calling it here for the night. We'll kick off next time with the first proper combat encounter. I have work from 1-9:30 EST tomorrow, so I'll post the intro to the fight in the morning and then get into things a bit while I'm on break. I want to hammer out a few things before the actual fight in terms of mechanics anyway.

Until next time!

Become The Dragon Quest Combat Rules

Here are the quickfire combat rules that I came up with. I'll post them here so you guys can rip into them and find all the little kinks and potential exploits that I didn't think of, so that when I come back we can make them more solid, more fun and more user friendly.

Fightan
You make an attack roll using one of your attack options (You have a sword and a bow, but no arrows, and you have claws but no Brawl skill, and a Knife skill but no knife.) and add the relevant modifiers. Swinging your sword? Sword+Strength. You get the idea. Defending will be either Block, Parry or Dodge. Blocking is Strength based, Dodge is Speed based and Parry is Smarts based. Tack on your Defense mod and see what happens. Some attacks can't be dodged, some can't be parried and some can't be blocked. Trying to parry lightning is awesome, but unless you've got the gear for it you're probably not going to succeed. When the attacker beats the defender, the defender gets hurt. For every five points the attacker beats the defender by, the damage is more severe. Which brings me to...

HP/Wounds
Instead of arbitrary hit points, we'll be using wounds. When you take damage, you get a wound, ranging from minor to severe based on the roll. If you get beaten by 1-4, it's minor. 5-9 is major and 10+ is severe. A crit is an incapacitating wound. You have:

3 minor wounds
2 major wounds
1 severe wound
1 incapacitating wound

When you run out of room for minor wounds, the next blow is automatically major, and so on. Minor wounds are easy enough to shrug off and don't hinder your combat abilities, they just hurt. A major wound hampers your combat abilities and makes it more difficult to fight, imposing -1 on your rolls for each major wound. A severe wound is bad enough to impose a -3. If all your wounds besides incapacitating are full, you have a -5 on your rolls due to your injuries.

We can figure out healing later. Have fun ripping this apart~
>>
>>42166573
Looks pretty solid and fun. Will armor add bonuses to defense or absorb wounds up to [x severity] [y times] or something else?
>>
>>42166774
I've always liked armor as DR, personally. I think what I'll do is have it start top down, so instead of ignoring minor wounds, armor makes the more lethal blows manageable. Basic armor like what you've got right now will turn severe wounds into major wounds unless you've maxed out your major wounds. Better armor will cover more wound types or even reduce things further. As for armor durability, I'll think of something.
>>
>>42166573
How will you handle enemy health? Will they all have about the same as us or do you have something like a caegory for the enemies like: Scrub, trained, master to make sure that fights don't take too long every time?
>>
>>42167164
Enemies will follow a similar wound system, which I'll adjust to fit the enemy. Mooks will only have a handful of wounds, while a boss might have more wounds than you do and require working with your party to take down.
>>
>>42167159
Maybe the armour would only last a certain amount of hits of a certain serverity.

Also heres another question. How tough would dragon scales be as how much protection will the give if we have them

Anyway ive been following this quest just havnt been able to join in because its always archived or nearly finished by the time i see it
>>
>>42167560
Armor durability will be based on damage soaked. Scales or anything that would count as "natural armor" in D&D will count as additional armor, providing damage soak and using its own durability.

Two hours til break time and scene setting.

Alright, go time.

-

You're not sure who moved quickest, of it was Gil drawing his bow and knocking an arrow, Sena sliding her dagger from its hiding spot or yourself, sword unsheathed and claws at the ready. If you had to guess it was Gil, but you're at least glad that everyone heard the growl. These wolves look mangy and filthy, their fur matted with mud and their bodies covered in scars and cuts. Their eyes are bright yellow, all the more striking against their dirty and haggard fur. There's only two of them, but from what you know wolves have packs, and their could be more nearby.

You step up and strike, swinging hard, your sword connecting with the wolf right below the shoulder. You're rewarded with the sound of a crunch and a cry of pain. Sena and Gil manage to rough up their target, with Gil delivering the more serious blow, but neither wolf falls. Your target turns to make a counterattack, while the other moves to attack Sena.

You decide to switch targets. Nobody messes with your party, and you intend to make sure that wolf learns that lesson well. You tell to Gil to attack the other one to finish it off, but he seems hesitant to do anything aside from help his sister, and he drops his bow and draws his knife, advancing on Sena and the wolf.

You back towards it to keep your eyes on the other wolf, and then spin around to slam your sword into the back of the wolf's neck. You cleave it off, sending a spray of black fluid into the air, and yell to Gil to get your back. Sena is crying and clutching at her arm as the wolf's head releases it. The bite is red and raw and bloody. Gil turns and rushes the other wolf, knife raised high, and slams it down into the wolf's head. It howls and falls silent, slumping to the ground and twitching. Black goo covers Gil's knife, and he pants hard, turning towards you.

“Is Sena alright?”

You tell Gil to tend to Sena. You haven't got any healing magic or medical knowledge to help her with, and he's her brother. He rushes to her side the instant you tell him, and you turn your attention to the wolves. The bodies seem to be decaying rapidly now that you've taken them down, and you can see the skin split before your eyes, revealing more of the black fluid and rotten muscle underneath. You're not sure these wolves were alive when they attacked you.

You look around a bit, but you don't see any other obvious threats at a glance. You could look more closely to investigate the situation, or you could try to help Gil and Sena. When you look over at the pair, with Gil cradling her to his chest and trying to dress her bit, you can see her scars turning red. This must have been what it was like after she was attacked. It's then that you notice her cut is no longer a bright and angry red, but darker, edging towards purple.

You're a day from the village, and only if you sprint. You could try to gather herbs from the area or have Gil do it and try to tend to her that way, since there's no guarantee that someone there will be able to help and running to the village might only hurt Sena more.

You decide to make the best of things where you are. Transporting Sena right now is too risky, and there aren't any obvious threats. You kneel down beside Gil, who is trying to dress Sena's wound with a torn strip of cloth from his shirt.

“You know this area better than me. We need to get her wound clean, right? Are there any herbs we can use to help?”

Gil glances at you, keeping most of his attention on Sena.

“In the forest maybe. But it's a stretch. And if there's nothing we can use... What we need is water... The river is down the road a ways, and the village is beyond that. There's a shop that might have what we need. I'll see what I can do here, but we have to get Sena at least to the river.”

You nod a bit. The wolves have rotted completely to the bone now, and even that is slowly dissolving away. The smell is disgusting. Whatever they were, there won't be a trace of them soon. You slip off your pack and pull out your flint and steel.

“I'll get a fire going so we can at least seal her wound and stop the bleeding.”

Gil hesitates, and then nods.

“I'll check the woods then... Keep her safe for me...”

He releases Sena slowly, and she looks at you. She looks scared, her hands shaking as she lets go of her brother. You holds your arms out like before and she latches onto you immediately. Gil smiles a little bit, pats her on the head, and runs off towards the woods. You lift Sena up and head for the edge of the road, making a straight path to the nearest downed branch or log to start a fire with. Sena sticks right by you as you start making the fire, leaning against your side. Her arm is bound, but you can see the purple spreading and darkening.

You pull Sena close to keep her out of harm's way in case something goes wrong, ignoring her protests for the moment.

“I need you to trust me.”

You start to sing and she immediately stills, eyes closed tight. The words come naturally to you, despite not knowing what they mean, and you focus on the campfire. You breathe in deep, letting out note after note, and breathe out fire.

But it doesn't hit the campfire.

When you let out the flame, it immediately circles around Sena's arm, and you hear her yelp. The bandages burn away, exposing her wound, which has now been cauterized. The purple also seems to have stopped spreading, or at least slowed for now. Sena grips her arm tightly and whimpers a bit. At least you've bought some time.

Decide when he gets back, we're going to want his input on it and depending on how far the town is we might want to wait until we're there to get a proper doctor to look at it.

>>
Looks like the split is between waiting on Gil and moving out, and waiting for Gil so you can decide as a team.
>>

>>
You decide the best course of action is to see what Gil comes back with. He might have some ideas worth hearing, and at worst he comes back empty handed and you get moving. Sena shies away from you a bit, examining her arm.

“What... What did you do?”

You shrug a little bit and go back to the fire, in case you need one when Gil returns.

“I sang. I wanted a fire to seal your wound and I got one. I didn't think it would work quite like that though.”

Sena nods a bit and pokes at the darkened skin of her arm.

“It doesn't hurt so much anymore, but it does feel icky... And my arm feels kinda heavy and cold now...”

You nod a bit and pull out your blanket, offering it to her. It's a warm enough day, but she should at least be comfortable if she's feeling a chill. She wraps it loosely around herself, mainly around her arm, and moves close to the fire. You look up and spot Gil in the distance. He seems to be yelling something, and running pretty fast, holding something up in the air. You squint, and you can see white flowers clutched in his hand. As he gets closer you can hear him clearly.

“I found something! Hey! Kotijah!”

He skids to a halt and grins at you, shoving some of the flowers into your hands.

“These are pale lergos, if we mash them up a bit and cover her wound with them it'll help prevent infection.”

He smiles at Sena, who sheepishly shows him the burns on her arm. Gil slowly loses his smile and sighs.

“Right. Beat me to the punch... Well, we can still use them to help soothe the burn. Once that's done we should get going.”

Sena nods and reaches for one of the flowers, flinching a little when she tries to grab one and holding one hand with the other. You start shredding petals, and so does Gil. In short order you've got enough to cover her forearm, and Gil rips off some more of his shirt for a binding.

“Well, let's get moving. Kotijah, lead the way?”

Always a pleasure. Doing this quest is helping me with my writing and forces me to write several hundred words a day, though more like several thousand counting notes, rewrites and drafts. It's good practice and lots of fun.
>>
>>42185343
When you running next? Really enjoying these
>>
>>42185422
Probably tomorrow, honestly. Doing this every single day if I can. Some days will be slow because of work and such, others will be full of content. Ideally I can build up a solid enough pace with this that when I switch over to working on, say, a novel, or a story series online, I don't break my stride and keep producing content people enjoy.

Or I could just keep running quests.

By the by, I want to put this out there now, I'm probably going to write some short stories as time goes on. Little tidbits to help build the world and the characters. The first one I want to do is about Sena and Gil and their life before Sena was attacked. I'll post something about that in the next thread tomorrow and people can let me know if that's something they'd want to read about.
>>
>>42185597
Sounds cool, looking forward to more tomorrow then!
