Become The Dragon Quest 2

You are Kotijah, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Yesterday you began your adventure by leaving home, beating up some mercenaries, and getting yourself decked out with some of their gear.

Last night you learned from a letter the mercenaries had that the borders of the kingdom are in trouble, and monsters could start attacking any day. You also met Sena, a girl who tried to rob you while you were asleep and who is now accompanying you in return for food and protection.

You're back on the road now, heading North towards Shen-Sirudai, the City of Glass and the capitol city of the kingdom. You have at least two days of walking to the river crossing, and just beyond that is a village where you can get some supplies.

Head North and seek the City of Glass for answers

With two days to kill, you've got time on your hands. You should probably decide how you want to proceed.

>Take it slow, hunt for food, practice skills along the way (4 days)
>Don't rush but don't idle, take an extra day to prepare (3 days)
>Move quickly, no time to waste on scenic travel (2 days)

You decide the best course of action is to take it slow. For one, you barely know where you're going aside from having the road to guide you, and you don't want to get lost or worse if the road ends suddenly and you need to find where it picks up again. If you lose your way you doubt you'll find it again any time soon, and that's days you'd be wasting when you could be doing something productive.

For two, you know you need to practice your skills before you get to the next village or else the next time you draw your sword could be your last. You could always ask Sena to spar with you if she's any good with that knife. Maybe she can carve you a wooden sword to practice with or something.

And for three, you don't have much food, and now you have an extra mouth to feed. While you're not the most skilled hunter in the world, you're pretty sure that you could rig up a simple trap. You've seen your father do it a few times, and you've got some rope with you, so it shouldn't be too difficult as long as you can remember how it's done. It would be a lot easier if you had a bow though.

As long as you spend a few hours each day walking you can get there in four days no problem, and the slower pace means much more time can be spent on training, hunting and other tasks. You'll always spend your mornings hunting for food, that much seems obvious to you, but after you get settled in camp you should pick some other things to work on.

You settle on a second round of hunting in case the first goes badly, some sparring time with Sena to help you learn the basics of your weapon, and some time alone to work on your focus. While not always the most vital skill, you can recall more than one occasion where you've needed to put your all into something and tune out distractions like noise and pain. Plus you can spend that time exploring the area around camp looking for useful or interesting things.

You fill Sena in on your plan as you walk, and she just gives you the same old smile, nodding slightly, never once glancing up from her carving work. Each movement is precise and efficient, and each motion of her knife ends in a delicate little flick that sends a discarded piece of food into the air behind her.

“Whatever you want to do is fine with me. Like I said, so long as I get to eat I'll help you out.”

You search around for a good place to stop for your morning hunt. Roll Smarts. (1d20+0)

You come to a stop when you notice something. There are little tracks cutting across the path, and you know the stream isn't too far from the road at this point. If you move quickly you could probably rig up a simple trap for whatever it is that crossed the road. You pull out your sword, grab some sticks and your rope, and hurriedly assemble your snare.

After a few minutes of work you manage to put the trap together. You almost messed it up, twice, and the second time you nearly got yourself caught in your own trap, but it's complete. You grab some nearby grasses that look herb-like, slash your sword at them, and rub what falls down onto your skin, tossing the rest to Sena who, after a moment of looking at you like you're crazy, shrugs and does the same.

Now the waiting game begins. Your bait is the remainder of your bread on a sharpened piece of wood, with a few berries stuffed into it for good measure. Sena sits next to you in a nearby tree, and you wait. And wait. Off in the distance you can see movement, and a small deer makes its way towards the road, eyes alert and ears perked.

It moves towards your trap slowly, and you swallow nervously as it investigates the sudden appearance of food in its path. It takes a bite, and the trap springs into action, rope winding around it's neck and the sapling you bent lifting sharply. The deer screams and yanks at the rope frantically, running around the sapling to try to escape.

You leap down from the tree and head towards it, Sena close behind you. You could let it go, you suppose. But you also need to eat. At least you've learned something from your mistakes for next time.

When a roll is called for, 5 people attempt the roll. When five rolls have been counted, someone rolls a d5 to see what the actual result is. >>
You draw your sword. You've been to the slaughterhouse before, you know what comes next, and you take a moment to ready yourself. You've never taken a life before, and you're simultaneously appaled by the thought and excited on some primal level. The deer does what it can to keep away from you, but it's rapidly wearing itself out running in circles.

Your first strike isn't as clean as you'd like. You were aiming for the head and instead caught it on the shoulder, but it slowed it down quite a bit more. Your next stroke is better aimed, though you cut the rope in the process of striking it's neck, losing a good foot of it but dropping your quarry. One final blow finishes the job and puts it out of its misery. You notice later than you should have that Sena is still right behind you, watching you cut down the deer. Her smile is still on her lips.

“So that's lunch then?”

She pulls out her knife and kneels down beside the deer.

“Want a hand dismembering it?”

You ask Sena for her knife and tell her that you'd rather do it yourself, if for no other reason than principle, and that you'd like her to coach you through it. She isn't forthcoming with the blade, but she gives it to you after a few moments and nods.

“Alright then.”

She guides you through the process, and while your cuts aren't as precise as you'd like you make quick work of the deer, separating meat from bone and removing the hide. All told you've got quite a bite of good meat, though most of it will require smoking or preserving in some way if you're going to take it with you. By the end you find yourself handling the knife pretty well, and for your first time carving something up, you're satisfied that you've grasped the basics of preparing meat for cooking and cleaning a kill.

Knife increased to 1
Cooking increased to 1
Skinning increased to 1

Current Possessions
1 Pack containing Rope, 1 Blanket, 3 Candles, 1 Match, 1 Flint and Steel, 3 Dice, 1 Letter
1 Pouch containing 3 Copper pieces (CP), 9 Silver pieces (SP), 5 Gold pieces (GP)
1 Bindle containing 1 Partial turkey leg, smoked
1 Wineskin, full of mead
1 Farmhand outfit
1 Mercenary outfit
1 Set of mercenary armor
2 Pairs of heavy boots
2 Pairs of sturdy leather gloves
1 Sword
7 Portions of deer meat
1 Deer hide
1 Collection of assorted deer parts

Now that you have your meat, you could start cooking it now and make some meals for the day ahead. A single portion of your kill should last you and Sena all day, but if you don't do something with it soon you may find it's begun to rot within the next few days. Alternatively you could try to do something with the rest of the kill and leave the cooking to Sena. You've got bones, tendons and other bits and pieces.

Let's try to fashion a crude bow from the bones and tendons.

I know it's completely impractical IRL but this is a quest in a fantasy world and dice mechanics may save us. Slightly thin bones to replace the wood of the bow, tendons for the bowstring.

Let's see if the dice gods think this is a good idea.
>>
>>42129358

Dice gods hesitantly approve.

>>

So tendons can make sinew, which is good for binding things together. Like arrow heads to make a spear or arrows. Bone can be used to make needles, fishing hooks and even daggers.

Have sena set up the rest of the meat for smoking.

We got to make the most of it.

Also for the bow idea let's wait on that and ask Sena to pick suitable wood for it since she is a carpenter after all and will be better at bow making.

You pass Sena her knife and open your pack, giving her your flint and steel and telling her to get to cooking. You have an idea you want to try. Sena wipes her knife clean with a few leaves and nods, setting about getting a fire going and gathering some nearby plants for seasoning. She looks like she knows what she's doing, and satisfied with that you turn your attention to the remains. You grab the cut portion of the rope, the tendons, some sticks and some bones, and pull out your sword for a cutting edge. Time to get to work.

It's a total mess for the first few minutes of your work. The first attempt collapses before you've even finished it, and the second holds up just long enough for you to turn to Sena and open your mouth, falling apart in your hands before you make a sound. Maybe it's better that way. The third time's the charm, right? You hack off a portion of the sapling you had used for your snare since it seems springy and flexible enough for the bow shaft and run your sword slowly and carefully along its length to shape it, notching the ends and making an indentation for the arrows to rest against. You even reinforce the curve by lashing bones to it, partially to help it hold the right shape while you work and partially to make it look more impressive. You carefully pull your makeshift bowstring into place, and...

You hear a soft creaking noise, and the bow shaft falls apart, one end smacking you in the face while the other flings the strands of tendon you were holding away a few feet. Damn it. Your lower lip stings and you can taste blood on your tongue. Could have been worse, honestly...

Sena is either too busy with cooking to notice, or simply doesn't care. She's humming softly to herself as she works.

One more try. This bow has drawn blood and you're not even finished making it. That's either a very good sign, or a very bad one. You're not quite sure which yet. It's probably both. You gather up the pieces of tendon again and take a moment to examine your materials once more. You know what a bow looks like for the most part, and you know how it functions. A second look at the tendons makes you wonder if just tying the floppy strands together was really all that good of an idea to begin with.

You untie everything and start over from the beginning with your bow shaft, making sure that the cuts are where they should be and that the grip is comfortable. You untie the pieces of tendon and consider just taking Sena's knife to them to thin them out, but you opt to save that for last. The body of the bow requires your attention first. You go to make another cut and Sena clears her throat.

“You should probably dry the tendons out first. If they stay wet like that they they're gonna rot. Plus it should come apart into strands. It's what my brother used to do.”

Right. That makes sense. You mentally note that Sena has a brother and return to your task, leaving the tendons by the fire for the moment to dry a bit. You smooth out some of the rougher portions of the bow and give it a few flexes. It occurs to you that despite having no clue what you're supposed to be doing, at the very least some of it seems obvious.

>Cont.
>>
Time for the moment of truth, you suppose. You grab the tendons and examine them. They're drier, which you suppose is good enough. You attempt to pull the tendons apart with your claws to make strands, but the stubborn things won't budge without threatening to tear, and the inside is still moist. They probably need further drying or something. You look at what you've assembled so far, then at the tendons. You're so close, and you hate having to wait like this.

>>
>>42132583
This dice system isn't the best really. If it was best of three we'd be done and it's still random. Now we have to go through this process of rolling again after to see what we get to keep and it just takes to long.
>>
>>42132614

Yeah, this is basically a drawn out system to roll a d20 o i would probably prefer to eith just have someone roll a d20 or maybe best of three with the DC system prepared for that. The fact that the dices can so easily screw us over if we only have one d20 to count on without a whole party of other players rolling too will in the end result in suffering.
>>

I think a best of three system would work well enough. Would certainly take less time.

If this were Meguka Quest then that would be just fine. Hmm. Alright, let's try something else. Best of three, crits confirmed if there's a second high value of at least 20-bonus. So a Strength crit requires a 20 and another roll of at least 17. Think we can give that a go?
>>
>>42132897
Sure, sounds good
>>
>>42132677
Agreed. Best of 3 -Crits Override- is the most commonly used system for a reason. It allows reasonable participation, and somewhat mitigates massive chance while still allowing for a respectable possibility of chaos factor one might end up with doing whatever.
>>
>>42132929
Now if our rolls had been super good, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Patience has never been your strong point, you prefer action, but you manage to rein yourself in enough to sit through drying the tendons out properly, moving them around the edge of the fire so they don't burn. Sena watches you with amusement as you work. Her cooking smells wonderful, and from the look of things you'll have a nice roast to cut into soon.

You remove the dried tendons from the fire and start gently shredding them. They come apart more readily now, separating into fibers, and you smile to yourself as you cobble together the last of your bow with the sinew, braiding some together for the bowstring.

A few minutes of work and you finish your bow. A few quick tugs on the string assure you that it's sturdy. It's been a long process, but it's done. Now if only you had arrows to test it...

Sena whistles behind you and smiles.

"Nice work. Time for lunch?"

You grab your wineskin and sit by the fire, setting your new bow aside for the time being. Sena carefully removes the venison from the fire and you finally get a good look at what she had been doing. The meat has been cubed and then skewered on sticks, which were set around the edge of the fire and covered with herbs as they cooked. One bite tells you all you need to know about the end result: Sena can cook.

You dig in and take a swig of the mead, thanking Sena and smiling. She smiles back, like always, but there's the barest hint of pride as well. After your first skewer of venison is devoured you ask her about arrows.

"You'd be better off asking my brother. I was an assistant, my brother was the apprentice. He could tell you all about arrows if we run into him. Archery is one of his passions."

You decide to leave it at that while you help yourself to another skewer and another swig.

You decide to leave it at that and start packing your gear up once more, loading the roasted venison into your bindle and slinging your bow over your shoulder. Sena grabs the bindle and steps out onto the road, and you follow behind her once you're done packing.

You carry on down the road for a few hours until Sena comes to a sudden stop and moves towards a small tree.

"We camp here."

She heads for the tree and then steps down and out of sight. When you approach you see a cleverly disguised ledge, and an alcove dug into it that's sheltered by the roots.

You follow behind Sena. She said it herself, she's been on this road stealing for a while, she probably found it while walking in the direction of your town. The alcove isn't that large, but there's room enough to sit side by side and the remains of a fire a little ways away on a cleared patch of ground. It's funny, you almost think you smell smoke. It's then that you notice a few other things out of place. If this place hadn't seen use recently then the grass wouldn't look bent like someone had been sleeping or laying there, and while someone had taken very great care to hide their footprints, there are fresh ones in the dirt leading up over the ledge and further up the road that could have used a bit more brushing away. Someone left in a hurry.

You take a moment to settle in before you turn to Sena.

“So, nice little spot you've got for us here. Shame it's not all that well hidden.”

Sena turns to the fire pit and starts poking around in it.

“I suppose. But it serves its purpose. You get a pretty good view of the road in both directions to see travellers as they walk by.”

You nod.

“Must be how whoever was here last knew to get out of here.”

Sena glances at you for a few moments, stirring the ashes with a stick.

“What do you mean?”

You point out the footprints and the bent grass.

“Someone was here. Didn't you notice? They even had a fire going until recently.”

Sena nods at you as though you're a moron and she's humoring you, and you give her the same look you gave her last night when you were calling her on her bullshit and pressing for answers. She relents almost immediately.

“It's safe, I promise. Yes, someone was here, but they're not dangerous. Can you just trust me on that? I don't want to tell you anymore just yet. I trust you only so far as it is myself.”

Sena looks off into the distance, like she's gazing at something only she can see.

“It's my brother. He's been keeping an eye on us since you caught me. I'm safer with you than with him right now, and you've got food to spare, but that doesn't stop older brothers from being older brothers.”

She turns towards you slowly and grins a slightly manic grin.

“Your brother killed him, didn't he. Made him suffer first, right?”

Sena nods.

“Mhmm. While I was looking for work and trying to figure out what I was going to do next, he finished his apprenticeship up and then set up the workshop with a few traps. The doors could close but not open, and he made sure there was plenty of sawdust to clean up. All it took was a spark. I'd never seen him look so pale before. We fled town and turned to stealing to survive.”

You take a moment to fully process the story before continuing.

“Why doesn't he just come with us then?”

Sena shrugs a bit and resumes looking off into the distance.

“I think he's worried that if someone spots him and recognizes him, he'll get all of us in trouble. He's a murderer and a thief. I'm just his little sister.”

She smiles softly and giggles.

“He'll probably come by tonight to check on me, if I signal him that it's safe. If you promise not to spook him I'll try to make sure he doesn't put an arrow in you.”

Meeting her brother sounds like the best move here. It sure beats spending the next few nights waiting for someone to try to shoot you from afar and wondering where Sena's really going off to every time she leaves camp.

“Sure thing. I'll meet him.”

Sena tilts her head.

“What, really?”

You nod and offer her a smile before tussling her hair.

“I like to keep my threats where I can see them. Plus you win bonus points for being honest if your story checks out.”

Sena pulls her hair back into place and just stares at you.

“Bonus points...?”

You nod and open up your pack.

“Yep. Bonus points. I'm off to make a name for myself, do great things and eventually turn into a dragon. Those bonus points will save your life when I'm a giant scaly monster that breathes fire.”

Sena bursts out into genuine laughter, her facade cracking, and she smiles warmly at you.

“Fine then. A long term investment, but I'll take it.”

You let out a little chuckle of your own and turn your attention to other matters.

You opt to continue as planned for the moment and grab your sword and your bow, as well as your rope and a handful of your rations. You don't have any arrows, but you kinda don't want to leave it behind in case her brother comes by and sees your work. You don't know what sort of critique it'll earn, and you don't want to find out presently.

“I'll be back in a little while. I said I'd go hunt, and that's what I'm going to do.”

Sena nods slightly and pulls out her knife and the wood she's been carving. It already has a crude dragon-like shape to it by this point.

“I'll keep myself out of trouble then. Good luck.”

You give her a nod and start to walk away from the camp. It feels good to have some time to yourself again, and you take a moment to take stock of your surroundings. Last time you lucked out with the tracks, but now you need to find the trail by yourself. It takes you some time, but eventually you stumble upon the trail and start to follow it. You're not sure when the next animal will be coming by, you just hope that if one does you can get the jump on it. No sense rigging a trap and waiting if nothing walks past it in the next day.

Your explorations aren't for naught. You don't find any animals while following the trail, but you do find several bushes of wild berries. Animals have eaten most of the ripe ones, but there's still plenty that you can gather. You could probably load up a good portion of your pack if you wanted to.

You don't take more than you think you'll need, padding your pack out a bit without adding too much weight, and double back towards camp. When you arrive Sena has the fire going, and the sky is slowly starting to change color. It'll be evening before too long, but you've got time for sparring and your walk. Sena appears to be busily carving when you reach camp, and she proudly shoves something into your hands the moment you set your pack down. It's a little wooden carving of a dragon rearing back, wings spread, roaring fiercely. There's a little notch on the back just above the wings where she's threaded some of the sinew through to make it into a necklace.

Remember when I decided on the crit system, there was that one guy who said we'd never crit? I want him to see this moment. Not to rub his face in it, just to share with him the magic of it. Dreams do come true.

“Well, I haven't seen better. That's not to say that better doesn't exist, and I'm sure one day you'll be a master at it and you'll be able to make even better.”

You bring the figure closer to your face to look it over while Sena starts to frown. Before she speaks you continue.

“But I've never seen it, and I'm pretty happy about that at the moment. Because right now, this is the most beautiful carving work I've ever seen, the most precise craftsmanship, and the best gift I've ever gotten. Thank you.”

You smile at her and put the necklace on, adjusting it so the figure is beside your heart.

“Bonus points.”

Sena looks stunned for a few moments before she turns away and huffs.

“Playing with someone's heart isn't very nice you know. But for such an eloquent compliment...”

She looks over her shoulder at you, cheeks tinged pink and a grin on her face.

“Bonus points.”

You nod, and then remove the necklace and place it on top of your pack, stretching slowly.

“I believe it's sparring time next. I found some berries while I was out hunting, so we've got something for dessert. Shall we practice before dinner and then eat?”

Sena nods and starts adjusting her clothes, rolling up her sleeves and securing loose ends. Her scars are more prominent along her forearms, but it doesn't seem to faze her to show you them now. Her knife dances in her fingers as she steps towards the field near camp.

Time to find out what you're made of.

You draw your sword and take a few practice swings with it, and Sena smiles.

“So we'll start with the basics. Attack and defend. We'll go slow and build up from there. So you take a swing at me, and I'll block or dodge, and then it's my turn. That's how my brother taught me to fight.”

You roll your eyes and smile. You've been in fights before, you're just learning to add “using a sword” to your list of combat options. You nod anyway though, and swing your sword through the air at her at what seems like a reasonable speed to you. Sena holds her knife up and blocks before pushing your sword away slightly.

“Hmm.”

She strikes your sword sharply and it goes flying from your grasp, and she nods knowingly.

“You can't treat this like a game. You've gotta keep your grip tight and focus on precision.”

She picks up your sword and hands it to you.

“Again.”

You spend what feels like an hour doing nothing but taking swings back and forth, though as you speed up it seems like Sena is learning just as much as you are from the experience. By the end your arms are getting tired, but you've gotten the hang of fighting with a sword, and all the focus on dodging, blocking and watching your opponent has helped you polish your defenses.

All that training has worked up an appetite, and you decide the next order of business should be food. You're pretty sure that you'll have time for your walk after if you're quick. You head for camp and put away your sword, and Sena joins you as you open up your pack. She takes her knife to the meat in the bindle, cutting some of the cooked venison and turkey into bite-sized pieces and laying out the cloth from your bindle to eat off of. You're out of turkey by this point, so the bindle is pretty useless aside from storing your venison now, and you can't see that ending well. When you get to the next town you vow to plan things more carefully for the next leg of your trip.

The meal is, by all accounts, quite generous. On the farm you never got to eat so much meat all at once, but for the last day you've eaten nothing but meat, meat on bread, and now meat with fruit. You feel more draconic already. You tell Sena that, and it makes her laugh a little.

You finish off your meal and decide to head off for a walk, removing the bulkier pieces of your armor and letting Sena know that you'll be gone for a little while. You make sure to put the necklace back on as well. Sena smiles a bit, though it's less forced than usual.

“Alright then. Have fun. Don't let the monsters get you.”

You turn and walk off with a wave. It's a quiet evening, and you're enjoying yourself a bit as you find a path through the field to walk down.

You head off to explore for a little bit and find some woods. A harmless enough venture, and you make a notch on a nearby tree to keep you pointing in the right direction on your way back. You head a little ways into the woods, enjoying the scenery and reflecting on the day, but you start to notice a few things as you double back. It's taking you longer than you expected it would, and... That's funny, you could have sworn the path led out of the woods. It should have been a straight shot, but instead the next thing you know you're wandering deeper into the darkening forest. The sun is close to setting now, and at long last you find yourself completely lost, alone and in the dark.

Great.

You can't just grope around in the darkness trying to find a path out of here, you'll just get more lost. And you can't just camp here, you'll have even less of a sense of where you came from when you wake up. There has to be a way out of this mess and you intend to find it. You sit down and take a deep breath, trying to visualize the path you took, anything at all that might help you, but it's all cloudy and indistinct. The trees all look the same, and you don't even know where you lost the path. You grit your teeth and scrunch your eyes shut. Think. Think...

And then it hits you.

The sensation is like a wave rising up and crashing over you, flashes of light and color, and a cacophony of seemingly random noises. For a brief moment you see the face of your father, but much younger than you can remember him being. He's sliding a ring onto your finger, but that hand looks nothing like yours. Your mother's? In another moment you're far above the ground, and you see beneath you your shadow, the shadow of a massive dragon soaring above the landscape. Then you see fire, swirling and brilliant, all around you. There are eyes, eyes like pools of molten gold, staring right at you.

And then the feeling passes. You stand up, and you know that if you walk, your legs can take you back out of the forest all on their own. You know the path you took like the back of your hand, and you don't even need to think about it. You haven't got the faintest idea what happened in those woods, but at least you're out again.

When you get back to camp Sena is carving once again, her sleeves rolled back down, and you can hear her singing softly as she works. She's a little off key, but it's a pleasant song. You think you can see a shadow by the tree, but it could be a trick of the light, and it vanishes when you blink.

You head back over and let the weight of what just occurred hit you properly. No sense denying things. You were at your wits end, felt backed into a corner, and something clicked into place in your head. You don't know why you saw exactly what you saw, but you're pretty sure it has something to do with memories since it helped you sort through your own. Sena continues her work through your silence, and when you glance over you can see that she's working on some kind of doll or figure. It's hard to make out at present what it's meant to be.

“Did you notice anything while I was gone? Anything strange?”

Sena looks at you, shrugs a bit, and goes back to her carving.

“My brother came by and looked more nervous than usual if that's what you mean. Mostly I've just been working on this.”

Fantastic. For all you know you had fire spewing out of your mouth and light streaming up towards the sky, and there's no way of knowing for sure.

You decide to try asking Sena's brother, if he happens to still be there.

“Sena's brother. I know you're still here somewhere. Did you see anything strange at all?”

Sena's knife slips a bit and she laughs at you.

“He's probably long gone by now, he-”

A figure steps into view from behind a tree. He's older than you, by about as much as you are compared to Sena. He's dressed in all black, though his pants are a little stained with... Sena's been feeding him some of your food, you can see the stains from the berries and the venison grease in the firelight.

“I saw something. A light in the forest. Wanna tell me what you were doing in there before I let you endanger my sister any further?”

>Intimidate him, you're the scary one here

Emphasize that if nothing else, it wasn't dangerous.
