Become The Dragon Quest

You are Kotijah, and before you stands the gate leading away from your family farm, your bindle slung over your shoulder and the warm winds of spring washing over the landscape. You want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

You are a dragonling to some, a half-dragon to others, a mongrel to people looking to insult you. Neither of your parents were dragons; your father is a mortal man, and your mother possesses draconic blood, so your own draconic traits aren't particularly pronounced. You sometimes wish they were. Thinking back, you're not even completely sure what dragon bloodline you're descended from, but it strikes you as silly to turn back now.

Ahead of you lies the open road and a land you know almost nothing about, except that it is dangerous, full of monsters, and somewhere, the answer to your problem. What are you leaving behind?

-

Write in two interests or hobbies from your farm life, and pick two stats from the following to boost. Oh, and a gender. I can trust you with that, right /tg/?

Stats:
>Smarts – Street smarts and wisdom
>Strength – Brute force and raw effort
>Speed – Running, jumping, climbing trees
>Sleuth – Gaining and retaining knowledge, as well as observation
>Sneak – Slipping by unnoticed, picking pockets
>Schmooze – Persuasion, lying and other interpersonal skills
>>
Lastly, pick your most prominent draconic trait:

>Pointed horns - Growing up you were sometimes mistaken for a demon because of your horns and you were bullied and cast out because of it, and the experience taught you to be cautious of who you trust. Bonus to Smarts.
>Sharp claws - Your nails are actually sharp claws that make it hard to wear gloves or shoes, but they certainly help when you need to get a strong grip or slash something to pieces. Bonus to Strength.
>Long tail - While it sometimes seems to have a mind of its own, your tail is especially useful for helping you keep your balance or grip branches while climbing. Bonus to Speed.
>Keen eye - Your eyes are the color of molten silver, and you easily notice the little things. Bonus to Sleuth.
>Dull scales - It's not the covering of scales all over your body that you seek, just some on your arms, legs and around your face, but they do help you move unseen in dark places. Bonus to Sneak.
>Serpent tongue - Your tongue is forked and you occasionally hiss when you speak when you're not careful, but sometimes you find yourself saying just the right thing. Bonus to Schmooze.
>>
>>42096752
>I can trust you with that, right /tg/?
No, they will always pick futa, or barrying that the little girl, or barring that a female that acts exactly like a man, romances a harem of women, and only has penetrative sex with them thanks to magic penis or tail (and hey, dragon got a tail)

This quest sounds awesome so far. becoming the dragon FTW
Hobbies from farm life are hard, very limited selection compared to city life... let me try anyways

>Male
>Hobby 1 - Climbing
we were always attracted to high places, dreaming of flying like a real dragon. We practiced climbing anything we could. the barn, trees, houses in a nearby town
>Hobby 2 - hunting
rabbits are pests that eat the crops, if you kill them they add delicious meat to your diet.
>Smarts – Street smarts and wisdom
>Sleuth – Gaining and retaining knowledge, as well as observation
>Long tail - While it sometimes seems to have a mind of its own, your tail is especially useful for helping you keep your balance or grip branches while climbing. Bonus to Speed.

Speed is important for running away.

Female

Growing up, you spent a lot of time playing the lute and singing. Your father never really understood why and considered it a waste of time, but your mother gave you all the encouragement you needed. Sometimes you just did it to see her smile, even though you never thought you were any good. She lost her voice when she was younger, something about an accident that your parents rarely spoke of, so she always encouraged your singing, as though projecting herself onto you. It never bothered you though. It did, however, give you a talent for music, particularly Singing and String Instruments. While you're not going to be on stage any time soon, you can carry a tune and please a crowd.

Your father, on the other hand, made sure you carried your own weight on the farm. There were long walks back and forth to the fields each day, and over time you grew to enjoy them. Sometimes you would chat with your father, sometimes you'd walk in silence. Over time you came to spend those walks developing a knack for Self-Control and Focus, keeping your less savory urges in check with your daily meditations. It got you through your teenage years without any major incidents, usually.

-

Before you is the open road. As your family farm slips into the distance behind you and the local town becomes clearer on the horizon, you take stock of your possessions, and make note of things you might need.

Current Possessions
3 Copper pieces (CP)
2 Silver pieces (SP)
1 Bindle
1 Loaf of bread
1 Turkey leg, smoked
1 Farmhand outfit

-

The town itself is the same as it was yesterday, dirty but cheerful. The people no longer look at you like a disgusting freak most of the time, and they let you pass without incident. Where do you go?

You decide to head to the market first, in order to procure some supplies and bid a fond farewell to the few good people and many judgmental jackasses in this town. You have your grand destiny before you now, and the resolve to find it, and the likes of Saif of Shimmerleaf won't stand in your way anymore. You are Kotijah! Yours is the blood of dragons! You-

You are cut off from finishing your motivational internal monologue by the sounds of commotion in the marketplace. As you peer around the corner you can see two men in suits of armor arguing with one of the shopkeepers. It's kind of hard to make out what they're talking about, but both of the armored men seem to be armed, and one is keeping his hand on his sword's hilt.

You could turn and leave, saving your supply run for another time and another town, or you could...

You opt to try to get a better look at the situation instead of leaping in unprepared and getting stabbed. Knights kill dragons, you're fairly certain of that, and these men could, in theory, be knights. Keeping your distance, you do what you can to eavesdrop on their conversation, and it doesn't take much for you to hear them clearly.

Shopkeeper: “I said the price is three silver and I mean it.”

Knight(?) 1: “Now look here. We protect your lands, so you better cut us a deal or I'll-”

Knight(?) 2: “What my friend here means is that it's only fair for you to show your appreciation for our work with a little price reduction. If we run out of money and can't afford supplies, why, you'll have malnourished soldiers fending off beasts, and soon they'll be knocking on your doors.”

Shopkeeper: “You get paid plenty by the duke for your work already, and we pay him our taxes every year on time. Where do you get off threatening the people you protect, anyway?”

Knight(?) 2: “Methyas? Our friend is being unreasonable. See to it that he's made an example of to encourage better behavior in his fellows, would you?”

Methyas: “Now that's something I can get behind.”

From your vantage point you can hear the shopkeeper's protests, and see Methyas, the shorter and stouter man, shoving him into the shop. There's a sound like breaking glass and a yell. The other man simply stands there, looking around impatiently at the shocked faces on the villagers. He meets eyes with you for barely a moment, glancing away a second later like your presence means nothing.

What do you do?

Well the 3 in the test was a typo, buuuut...

-

You don't know what mad urge compels you, but you find yourself taking a step forward. And then another. Part of you knows that this won't stand, but you can't for the life of you work out why. To impress these people and prove your worth? To fight injustice? A good reason for a punch-up? You're not sure, and you're not sure you care right now. You advance on the man in armor and look at him for a moment. He glares at you impassively, silently judging you. You have other matters to attend to before you dent his face in, and you're fairly sure he won't go anywhere just yet, so you simply give him a glare in return. You storm into the shop, where Mathyas has his sword out and is smacking the shopkeeper around with the flat end, delivering minor cuts here and there in the process. He barely notices you when you walk up behind him, and barely makes a sound when you slam your fist into his gut, except a soft, shocked exhalation.

Staggering a bit, Mathyas glowers at you, and the shopkeeper takes this opportunity to run out the back door. Mathyas twists his sword in his grasp slowly, coughing a little bit and getting a surer grip on the blade. You left a mark on his armor where you struck it, and it seems to be giving him some trouble, but he still has fight left in him. He lifts his sword, yells, and charges at you.

You decide to put your superior speed to use, dodging around his wild swings and moving in a circle around him. You haven't been in many fights, but the few you've been in have been rough-and-tumble affairs with lots of close combat and fists flying, and occasionally claws lashing out. Fighting Mathyas is like that, but a lot easier to read. It's not like his sword is moving in slow motion, but you can tell where he's going to strike next, and you use that to your advantage. You pepper him with jabs and claw strikes, scratching up his armor and pissing him off enough to make bigger mistakes while wearing him down.

When he makes an overhead strike you slip out of the way, and can barely suppress your chuckle when he embeds his sword in the wooden counter, unable to wrench it free. You wind up and slam your fist as hard as you can into his face, knocking him sideways into a set of shelves for your finisher. Mathyas doesn't look like he's getting up for a while. A quick glance outside tells you the other man is still there, and looking furious.

You place your hands on the hilt of the sword and give it a sharp tug, then a harder yank, freeing it from the counter. You turn and point it in the direction of the other man and, in the most intimidating voice you can muster, tell him that pushing merchants around isn't something you'd expect from a knight. The man blinks, his furrowed brow relaxing briefly, and he begins to laugh.

“A knight? You think I'm...? Oh, you're almost too much. We're hired swords for the duke, there's nothing knightly about us except for our authority. And so what if we batter a few country bumpkins and take what we need? You people need us. Without the protection of the duke this place would be eaten alive. Now I'm willing to forgive you, little girl, if you help my friend up off the ground and give him back his sword, and maybe accompany us for the night to prove you're really sorry. Or we can settle this with arms, and when I beat you I'll be sure that the duke knows who attacked us, and that I remember this incident for next time.”

He draws his sword from its sheath and spreads his arms wide, taunting you. If you step out there now all eyes will be on you, and if you fail the whole town will see you fall before your journey has really begun. You're not sure if you can use the sword properly at all, but the grip is comfortable enough in your hand. A nice trophy for later. You let it fall from your grasp, and the instant the man's condescending smile widens, you break into a run, fist clenched tight.

Your fist connects. Hard. You can see his shocked expression as you come barreling out of the shop, letting out a frenzied yell and flinging yourself at him, and there's a certain satisfaction as your fist eclipses it almost entirely. You knock him on his ass with a crunch; his nose is definitely broken, and there's blood on your hand now. His sword thunks to the ground at your feet, and you watch him roll around, hands covering his face and cries of pain escaping his lips. You're almost certain that he's calling you a bitch, but you almost don't care. There's enough fire in your veins right now that he could be pleading for his life and you'd still wanna bash his head in some more. But maybe one was enough.

You lower your fists and grab his sword as you catch your breath, done with the fight for the moment. Whereas the other one felt decently comfortable to hold, this sword seems to be of better make, and the grip feels secure and steady in your hand. With some practice you could probably get the hang of swinging this thing around at least as well as Mathyas, if not better. You certainly hope better.

The man seems to be getting over the shock of the blow, sitting up slowly and glaring at you, trying to look intimidating with one hand covering his busted nose. A second look reveals you probably knocked a tooth loose as well. He opens his mouth to speak, to tell you off most likely, only to fall silent when he glances at the sword and the people around you. Out of the corner of your eye you can see the other people in the town drawing nearer, murmuring amongst themselves.

“He said he wasn't a knight, right?”

“Better safe than sorry. Mercenaries go missing all the time.”

“Always knew that one was dangerous. At least she put herself to use this time though.”

“Shut up, Ril, not like you did anything to help.”

With the crowd moving close now, you could leave them to their fates. They'll probably get what they deserve one way or the other now that you've disarmed and bludgeoned them both. Now it's time to make a choice.

You look at the man for a moment. His armor wouldn't fit you properly, but... You advance on him, sword pointed right at him, and you demand he turn over his possessions. He fumbles hastily, pulling out a small leather pouch and throwing it at your feet. It jingles as it hits the ground, and you snatch it up before anyone gets too close. Some further prompting and the man begins to remove his armor, boots and gloves, and you're quick to drag those off as well, leaving him to the crowd while you turn your attention to Mathyas. He's still out when you walk in, but you remove his armor quickly nonetheless. You also take his pack and the wineskin tied at his waist for good measure, as well as a few items of clothing. A quick stop outside to fetch your bindle and you regroup in the shop with your new... acquisitions, ignoring the shouts from outside.

Current Possessions
3 Copper pieces (CP)
2 Silver pieces (SP)
1 Bindle
1 Loaf of bread
1 Turkey leg, smoked
1 Farmhand outfit
2 Sets of mercenary armor (mixing and matching pieces will form a single set that fits, albeit uncomfortably)
1 Mercenary outfit
2 Pairs of heavy boots
2 Pairs of sturdy leather gloves
1 Wineskin, full of liquid
1 Pouch of uncounted coins
1 Pack of assorted supplies
2 Swords (one of distinctly superior craftsmanship)

You could haul the armor and swords down to the blacksmith for some quick coin, though he'll probably have to undercut the price quite a bit considering the size of the town. You could also inspect your new supplies and see what you have on hand, assuming Mathyas doesn't wake while you're examining his stuff.

You decide to save checking your supplies for later and haul the lot off to the blacksmith for now. It takes some effort, and a few people stop you on the way to pat you on the back or make some derogatory comment that could, in some fashion, be considered a compliment, but you make it there in due course.

You always liked the forge. When you were a little girl and your father took you into town to sell things from the farm, you'd sometimes wander off to see Mek, the smith, do his work, forging tools and bashing things into shape with his hammer. Now the smith's age was starting to show, but it didn't slow him down, and his eyes sparkle like the heart of the crucible behind him when he spies what you're dragging over.

“Well now, Kotijah, looks like you've been busy. Has the little dragon been out hunting knights?”

Mek laughs heartily and gestures to the inside of his shop.

“Bring it in here and let's have a look.”

You oblige, and he quickly starts looking over the armor and swords, examining each piece of metal carefully, occasionally lightly tapping a piece here and there to test for weakness.

“I'll give you a few silver for the lot if it's money you're after, but I don't have anything else I can spare right now. I suppose if you're willing to part with some of it I could alter what you've got, get you a nice set fitted. And if you're not too attached to one of those swords, I'll get you a proper sheath for the other and a whetstone and oil for maintaining it. Should take me a few hours at most to do the work, if you'll lend me a hand.”

You opt to help Mek with the alterations, and the pair of you get to work on adjusting the armor. Most of it involves you working the forge and keeping it as hot as you can make it while Mek does the actual work. It's boring for the most part, and you don't retain most of what he says about forging. A few things stick out about maintaining the armor and the sword, but aside from that you don't learn anything of use to you.

Occasionally your pace slows, and Mek has to help you with the forge from time to time to keep it hot. It might be the heat, or wearing yourself out with all that frenzied fighting, but it's like you've lost your pep for the moment, and you don't finish your work until late afternoon. Mek takes stock of the completed armor and nods to himself before letting you try it on. It fits like a glove. Sure, there are a few hammer marks on it from the rushed job, but you're protected now. You slip on a pair of gloves and some boots, and slide your sword into its new sheath at your side. You thank Mek and head out.

With sunset approaching in a few hours you decide to make up for lost time and start heading out onto the open road. The farms are mainly to the West, including your home, which leaves you North, East and South to choose from. The North road leads towards the center of the kingdom, to the East lies the home of the local lord as well as several other villages, and to the South is nothing but wilderness.

You head out of town, adjusting the pack on your back for comfort, and begin your journey northward. As the sun drifts lazily towards the horizon you reflect on the stories your father told you when you were younger. While he wasn't much for music, he knew how to tell a good tale, and your youngest years were full of frightful ghost stories, fables, and occasionally stories from his travels.

Before meeting your mother and becoming a farmer, your father was a wandering merchant and sword-for-hire. He roamed all across the kingdom selling his wares and his skills to make ends meet, and you're glad that he did. You know the name of the kingdom, Shanal, and you know its three largest cities are Bos, the City of Coin, Radova, the City of Clockwork and the capital of Shen-Sirudai, the City of Glass. Bos is actually the largest, the central trading hub of the kingdom located on the shore of the sea to the north, and Radova is the smallest of the three, further out to the west beyond Shen-Sirudai and run almost wholly by its local lord who some claim is a wizard. Shen-Sirudai is where the road in front of you will eventually lead, if you follow it for long enough. Along the way are a few small towns, a couple villages and the gate-city of Unce, where all travelers from the south of Shen-Sirudai get their paperwork filed for a visit to the capital.

The sky is slowly dimming as you pull yourself from your thoughts. What do you do?

Smarts roll

You head off the road a little ways and start setting up camp. While you've never camped out before, most of it seems common sense to you. You light a small fire, away from where you'll be sleeping, and surround it with stones in case the pile of sticks and logs falls over. You make a crude shelter from a few branches and stash your pack and bindle inside it for the moment. It's time to take stock of things.

You suppose you have time for a few quick tasks before bed, and if you wake early enough, three more before you start the day properly, for a total of six camp activities. If you had more hands to help you, you could probably get quite a bit done, but for now you've only got time for a handful of things before and after resting. A few things spring immediately to mind.

You decide inspect your treasures first. The coin purse contains glittering gold and silver coins from a fairly recent minting. Five gold coins and seven silver ones are added to your hoard. Additionally, the pack contains some rope, a blanket and a few candles but only one match for lighting them.

A look into the smaller pockets reveals a flint and steel for starting fires, which would have been helpful a little while ago when you were rubbing sticks together. You also find a few crude dice and a sealed letter, with the words “For Duke Lamiring” in flowing script on the front. Duke Lamiring is one of the lords to the East, and he mainly concerns himself with keeping monsters away from the kingdom. You set that aside for the moment and mull over whether or not to read it while you clean your new gear.

Current Possessions
1 Pack containing Rope, 1 Blanket, 3 Candles, 1 Match, 1 Flint and Steel, 3 Dice, 1 Letter
1 Pouch containing 3 Copper pieces (CP), 9 Silver pieces (SP), 5 Gold pieces (GP)
1 Bindle containing 1 Loaf of bread, 1 Turkey leg, smoked
1 Wineskin, full of liquid
1 Farmhand outfit
1 Mercenary outfit
1 Set of mercenary armor
2 Pairs of heavy boots
2 Pairs of sturdy leather gloves
1 Sword

While nothing is particularly dirty, you remember Mek saying something about poorly maintained equipment breaking more quickly, and you don't want to ruin your first suit of armor and first sword right off the bat. You polish and sharpen as best as you can, until you can barely see the hammer marks on the armor and the sword gleams in the firelight. In the morning you'll have to decide if you're going to keep wearing your farm outfit or switch to the clothes you acquired.

You've got time for one more thing before bed.

Time for literacy!

>>
You settle in with the letter and the wineskin, opening the latter first. Your nose is greeted by the sweet aroma of mead, and good stuff at that. While not ideal for rehydrating, you could probably enjoy it while it lasts and refill it at a stream or river.

You slide your nail under the seal on the letter and open it carefully. It pops open almost of its own accord, unfolding in your hands. It reads as follows:

-

Dear Dukey,

Consider this the termination of our agreement. The last batch barely lasted three days, and if you won't send me suitable materials to work with then I won't watch your borders for you anymore. I'm sending this letter via the cowards who survived by running away. Give them a suitable death, would you?

Regards, B

PS, send my regards to your king. I'm sure he'll love to hear how you messed up.

-

You're not quite sure what the letter means, except that the borders of the kingdom might no longer be as safe as they once were. On the one hand, a good reason to continue inward, but on the other it means troubling times might be ahead if no one does anything about it.

You glance around your camp briefly to make sure everything is where you left it, and satisfied that it is, you turn in for the night.

Morning comes too quickly and with too much rustling for your liking. It takes you longer than it should for you to notice that it isn't light out, and that the sun doesn't rustle when it rises. You open your eyes to find someone sifting slowly and carefully through your pack.

You throw off your blanket and chase after the thief at top speed. You had to really strain your tired mind to come up with that one-liner and you are NOT letting it go to waste by letting them take it as a suggestion. With each step you sink your claws into the ground a bit for extra traction, dropping low and kicking up dirt with every stride, and you throw yourself at the thief full force. They hit the ground with a panicked scream, and you yank your pack from their hands and the bandana from their face to get a good look at the would-be bandit. The girl, maybe a little younger than you, throws her hands up in front of herself.

“Please, don't hurt me! I'm just hungry, alright?“

Her stomach growls, as if to affirm her story, but hunger doesn't make it right to steal. Still, sometimes charity is the right call.

You pause for a few moments and give her time enough to calm before you speak. You want to make your next words count and you need her to be listening carefully.

“I will feed you, little thief. Next time you will ask first. I am very quick, and very watchful. Next time I might do more than simply knock you down and take back what's mine. If we understand each other, I'll let you up.”

She looks somewhat relieved when you say that, and nods slowly. You help her to her feet, sling your pack over your back, and give her back her bandana before walking back to camp, keeping a close eye on her. You certainly won't be sleeping heavily tonight now, but the good deed feels nice.

You open up your bindle and tear off some bread from the loaf, assembling a pair of crude sandwiches with some of your smoked turkey. She digs in eagerly, wolfing her meal down while you get a small fire going. You take a few bites as you regard her, and when she finishes her last bite she starts to speak.

“Thanks. I'm Sena. What's your name?”

“Kotijah.”

She nods slightly.

“You're nice, Kotijah. Most people would have slit my throat!”

There's something unnerving about how cheerfully she says that last part, but you brush it off as her simply being relieved.

If I had to guess the duke was giving people to some monster (a necromancer?) for protection. It suggest that the cowards who ran away were part of the batch, meaning that the batch was sent believing themselves to be mercenaries fighting against something on behalf of the duke when they were being sent into the grinder instead.

it also suggests the king was part of that plot. and that the duke would have no problems killing his underlings for their failure

it sounds really bad, about both the duke and the king

You stir the fire gently with a stick and look at Sena, before dropping the stick into the flames.

“So what led to you stealing from strangers in the dead of night?”

She tilts her head slightly, then shrugs.

“It seemed like a good idea?”

You glare at her for a moment, and she smiles and waves a hand dismissively. In the firelight you can see that there are several small scars along her fingers.

“Fine, fine. I used to work for a carpenter but I decided that I didn't want to be pushed around anymore so I set out on my own. Turns out that it's harder to get by without any skills or talents of your own than I thought, and I didn't want to be a whore, so I did the next best thing. I became a thief.”

There's something she's leaving out, you can tell that much, and you press her ever so slightly.

“Is that how your hands got all scratched up? Working for the carpenter?”

She flinches visibly when you mention the scars, and her smile flickers for a fraction of a second.

“Yep. How did you know? Most people just assume they're from a lockpicking mishap or something, but I'm better than that.”

You narrow your gaze slightly.

“If you want me to feed you any more food, you're going to have to be honest with me. How did you get the scars?”

Sena hesitates, smiling nervously, and when it becomes clear that you're not going to back down and that her free meal ticket is on the line, she finally relents. Her smile softens, her gaze drifting towards the fire. There's pain in her expression, and some small part of you wishes you hadn't forced this out of her, whatever it is.

“The carpenter gave me them. He was a little drunk, and really pushy, and he said that I was prettier than all the dolls I had been making in the back of his shop. It's how I practiced. I carved little wooden figures and made them clothes with scraps of cloth. I tried to push him away because he stank and he broke his bottle and tried to hurt me. He hurt my hands, mostly, and my back a little as well. I got away though, he didn't manage to... you know. The whore house wouldn't take me in, said that I was too young and no man would want hands like mine touching them anyway.”

You're not sure when the tears started, but you can see them clearly now. She smiles all the while though, the painted smile of a broken doll.

You take a moment to consider your options, and settle on trying to comfort her. You move around the fire towards her, and rest a hand on her shoulder. It's only when she looks your way that you realize that you have absolutely no clue what to tell her. You clear your throat to buy you a second, and open your mouth.

“It's a sign of your strength that you've been able to survive this long on your own. You should be proud of that. The carpenter was a drunk ass, the whores didn't know what they were talking about, and you're better off without them.”

She smiles at you and wipes her eyes.

“Thank you, for trying. But honestly, any life would be better than this. It was a good effort though.”

Ouch. She turns away from you and curls up on the ground.

“See you in the morning, Kotijah.”

“...Yeah. Goodnight.”

You decide to give up for now, and make a mental note to never try comforting someone ever again, a decision you expect to wholeheartedly regret before this journey is over, and one you're not entirely sure that you can stick to. You head back to where you had been sleeping and pull on one of the sticks in the fire, using it to jostle the others apart and kill the flame.

As you settle in under your blanket you give Sena one last glance before you drift off, shaking your head slightly. You weren't unsympathetic, but you certainly didn't have the right words for the situation. You let yourself slip into slumber once again. Tomorrow is a new day.

Skills can be applied to your rolls in addition to your stats if you can come up with a good, logical reason why they should fit the scene. Unlocking new skills and upgrading existing skills requires training and practice. Getting your first rank in a skill is as simple as spending an afternoon with a book or some untrained experience, but further ranks will require more investment in terms of time, as well as seeking someone to study under.

A new day dawns soon.

You awaken to the sound of birds chirping, and to the feeling of sunlight on your face. You open your eyes to find camp exactly as it was when you went to sleep, with the minor exception of Sena, who seems to have vanished completely. There are footprints on the ground that you could try to follow to see where she went to, but you also have no idea how much of a head start she has on you. It's time to press on with the day at any rate.

Step one, you decide, is making sure everything is in order. You already cleaned your armor and sword last night, so you turn your attention instead to the rest of your gear, making sure your blanket is folded neatly, your rope wound properly, and your coins are still in their pouch. Seems like Sena didn't take anything with her when she left.

With your hear organized and prepared, you decide your next step should be taking care of yourself. You settle on your mercenary clothes for the day, taking your farming clothes with you to serve as a cleaning cloth and towel for drying yourself. You know there's a stream nearby, and you head off towards it to clean off and drink.

As you finally near the stream you can hear soft splashing coming from downstream, not too far away from where you are. You could investigate, you suppose, but it could just be a wild animal, and you didn't come out here prepared to hunt, so you'd just be wasting time.

You decide to check on the noise, just to be safe. You head down the stream and keep to the tall grass as much as you can. You can vaguely make out a humanoid figure by the stream, and as you approach you spot Sena wringing out her wet hair. Her clothes are damp, and she probably only just finished cleaning herself up and getting dressed again. If you hadn't cleaned up camp first, you probably would have bumped into her at a more indecent moment, and that probably would have ended poorly. She seems to have spotted you, and looks a little surprised to see you, but her usual smile quickly settles onto her face.

“Sorry for running off, you just looked like you were having a nice nap. I didn't want to disturb you. I'll head back first then, and meet you back at camp.”

You shake your head a bit as Sena leaves and turn your attention to yourself once more. You strip down and make quick work of cleaning yourself, though you have the eerie feeling that someone is watching you all the while. The only person around is Sena, but you don't see a trace of here nearby as you wash. You dry off as quickly as you can and pull on your clothes, trying to shake off the feeling as you make your way back to camp. Sena is waiting for you there, poking at the remains of the fire and munching on some more of your rations. She hasn't eaten all that much as far as you can tell, just helping herself to a snack.

You've got a little time before you should hit the road again.

You decide to spend the last of your time at camp talking to Sena and trying to pry some tidbits of information from her. You sit by her, grab the loaf of bread, and pull off a portion of it to eat.

“There's a village just South of here where I'm from, but I don't recognize you. And this road heads North quite a ways, so you've probably traveled quite a while. Can you tell me anything about what's further along this road?”

She shrugs slightly, continuing to draw lines in the ash of the fire pit.

“There's a bridge two days from here close to where that stream meets up with the river. It heads to the East and then curves North towards the sea. Beyond that is a village where I'm not welcome and the road to the village beyond that.”

You nod slowly.

“Thank you.”

She smiles at you again as you start to put on your armor and gather your things.

“You'll want a guide.”

You turn and look at Sena, who has swapped her stick out for a knife you swear she didn't have the night before.

“The villages around here can be quiet and pleasant, but there are some seedy places that will swallow you whole if you're not careful. So long as I can eat, and you keep me away from a few unsavory people I'll tell you about later, I'll steer you towards the places you want to go and help you out. What do you say?”

You give her a nod and adjust your pack one last time.

“Deal. One little addition though. If you make me a little wooden dragon, I'll forget you tried to steal from me.”

Sena rises to her feet and slips her knife behind her back, apparently back into its hiding place, holding the other out.

“Shake on it?”

You take her hand and give it a firm shake, and Sena smiles cheerfully, grabbing a piece of wood from the fire pit and looking it over briefly before making a notch in it with her knife. You turn your attention to the open road ahead of you. It's time to get moving again. It'll be a little while before you reach the next landmark, but at least you have company now, and you'll have time to figure out the next step along the way. Reaching the City of Glass is step one, you're sure, but beyond that you haven't got a clue. You step onto the road with Sena trailing behind you, and start your journey once more.
