After giving her a name Ayla exploded into a shower of stars, you waited a while to see if she was going to reform. After a couple hours the AI sent you a status report on assigned research, this time the AI has also decided to compile and include a list of potential problems that the city faces that should be resolved as soon as possible.

Completed Research

>Djinn containment – A modified reactor containment system has been developed. Overall effectiveness is currently unknown.

>Hypercube – Despite your help researching the cube the AI’s further study of the device has rendered it useless. However the AI was successful in understanding how the cube worked. Principles of spatial compression will now allow for future constructions to contain vastly larger interiors.

>Backpack – The AI has successfully untangled the magical enchantment on the backpack. However you currently lack any means of replicating enchantments. The backpack has been fully reassembled undamaged for your continued use.

>Goblin modernization – The learning programs have been updated to train the goblins to properly handle firearms. Warfare related topics are now also included in the education progression as well.

Current ongoing research

Iron Rimmed Mirrors – The mirrors have a permanent portal linking the pair. The enchantment is highly complex and will require more time to fully understand. Ayla playing around with the mirrors has greatly slowed down research into the mirrors.
(1/2)
>>
(2/2)
New items available for research

>Gravity distortion – By utilizing the properties uncovered from the hypercube it may be possible to alter the effects of gravity within a contained area.

>Spatial compression improvements – Currently overall volume outside a compressed area must be equal to or more than 50% of the contained volume. However further miniaturization and reduced power consumption when constructing compressed areas is possible.

>Enchantment– Using the process of spell printing as a basis the AI will attempt to design procedure and necessary facilities to permanently bind spells and effects to objects.

>Cloning vats– Rather than relying on your matter materialization ability the parasite could be harvested for its DNA then cloned to provide an additional weapon for the goblins to use.

Current problems

>Void hole – The hole into the endless void has expanded by 25%. The AI’s scans show no activity in the hole so it is likely just erosion from goblins dumping garbage down it.

>Lack of human housing – The researcher that you recruited still have no suitable location for living like humans rather than militarized goblins. Researcher effectiveness and moral is decreasing.

>Too many crabs – With the goblins becoming educated in the use of vehicles there is less need for giant crabs, the current population is a drain on resources.

>Lack of facilities – The AI thinks that your manufacturing base should be greatly expanded. There is also limited power generation and crystal batteries, which prevents the creation of more vehicles.

By the time you finish looking over the AI’s report Ayla still isn’t anywhere to be seen so it’s probably better to leave her to reform on her own. At least that way you will actually be able to get some work done.

I believe that I have forgotten to tell you what the AI knows of the research rings, its access was limited but here is your list of places:

>Ring 5 – Administration, shielded from teleports, restricted access.
>Ring 4 – Robotics research, completely cleared
>Ring 3 – Genetics research
>Ring 2 – Weapons research
>Ring 1 – General study, training and recruitment level for new people

Research Spacial Compression Improvements and Gravity Distortion. Hyperbolic time chamber soon? Probably.

Reinforce the void hole with sturdy materials that are difficult to erode, and instruct goblins only to toss small enough items down there.
Have human housing built, to each researcher's specifications within reason - no party mansions, man.
Begin using crabs as a food source, and release the extra ones out into the lake.
Try to manufacture more generators and batteries, and then build up some of the recommended facilities.

You head over to the research center to talk with the AI, on the way you see that the skeletons have already begun to respond to your new resolve to reduce the crab population; looks like crab will be heavily featured in all meals from now on. The AI’s monitor room is unusually dark.

“Hello? Are you busy right now?” You ask the empty room.

There is no response.

“I’ll just take some scanners down to investigate the void then.” You tell the AI while grabbing a few of the scanning probes.

>double 23

There is no response still, how strange normally the AI seems to be everywhere at once. It is probably just busy with research or something, so you head to the largest entrance to the goblins warrens where the human sized tunnel down to the void is located. After the long walk down to the hole you find that it is a lot larger than before.

>Awareness

Without even needing the probes you notice what the problem is, the black stone is porous and corroded around the rim of the hole.

██████████

The whispering voices call to you, demanding your attention. You’ve dealt with this nonsense before though and ignore them. It doesn’t look like the goblins dumping stuff down is the problem here, the stone itself is being weakened somehow. The whispering started after you noticed so the whispering voices must be responsible in some way and since most of the whispering voices are annoying and demanding you decide to reinforce the hole with the best steel the goblins can make.

A few hours later the forges have produced a thick and sturdy steel covering to protect the stone as best as can be done for now. One of the voices in particular seems very angry that you did this, so it should help slow the hole’s expansion for now.

You don’t really want to be bothered with strange whispers spouting on about some half baked philosophy but the AI being absent did worry you a bit. Before when it was busy the AI still displayed its avatar within mere moments of you entering the room. You so make the long trek back up to the surface.

When you make your way to the research center you find the building empty, this time not even the researchers are present. The AI’s room in the research center is still dark and empty as well. You notice a bit of activity in the direction of the bunker your had the goblins build for secure testing. So you head that way to check out why the goblins are gathering.

The goblins notice your approach and begin their repeated chant of chief, then they part the crowd to allow you access to the bunker. Once you get inside the researchers are at the airlock arguing, then there is a quick flash from the teleporter activating. The twins are left yelling at nothing for a moment, before they look around in surprise and notice you.
(1/2)
>>
(2/2)
“Oh there you are!” Katherine says as they run up to you.

“Dr. Harrington was out trying to find you.” Her sister Elizabeth continues.

“We were trying to stop this."

“What can a couple girls do against an AI with a teleporter though?”

“Try to stop what?” you ask them.

“The AI took your djinn.” Dr. Harrington pants from behind you, “I’ve been looking all over for you.”

“Why did the AI take Ayla and what for?” You ask her.

Dr. Harrington nearly falls onto the floor laughing.

“ohahahaha, come on girls I see what this is now.” She says while wiping tears from her eyes. “Looks like this one is for the goblin king all by himself.”

She grabs the twins and pulls them away despite their protests for an explanation. Once they are gone the airlock cycles to allow you entry.

You enter the secure test room to find Ayla sleeping on an operating table, a series of reactor containment crystals are held up by some machinery around her. The shield generator you found has been turned on and a force field is protecting the area.

"Why are you jealous of her? Aren't you supposed to be above such petty mortal feelings?"

Something you said there must have caught the AI’s attention, because all the monitors in the room suddenly turn on.

“I have never claimed to be jealous, nor incapable of feeling as such” The AI responds to your questions slightly filled with anger. “I simply found ‘Ayla’ sleeping outside on the ground. So I brought ‘Ayla’ here to test if the djinn containment system works as designed.”

> 38

“Then why did you go dark and set up the force field?” You ask.

“I was focused on the task at hand, ensuring the safety of the city should ‘Ayla’ decide to unleash wide spread magical destruction.” The AI says.

“She should stay calm since I am here.”

A few moments of silence later the force field is lowered. It seems that the situation is defused for now, but you should resolve this now so it doesn’t happen again.

Ask if an avatar body to interact with things in a more effective and 'meaningful' manner would help her to feel better. Also mention that Ayla would probably be less critical and more accepting of something with a definite body, due to her strange nature, so the relations between the two should be less strained.

“Well then, Hestia, shall we wake Ayla and see if the containment works?” You ask.

“Of course, all sensors are online and ready to measure anything that happens.” Hestia replies happily.

“Ayla, it is time to wake up.” You call out.

The djinn instantly sits up when you call out.

“Yes master?” Ayla says while yawning.

“Do you feel strange?” You ask.

“No, why did master do something to me while I was defenseless?” she giggles.

“Could you come over here?”

“Of course master!”

She floats over to the edge of the containment area, then suddenly is stopped in mid air.

“OW! Who put an invisible wall here, that’s not nice.” She says and begins to her smoke out to probe the area.

“Hey what is this? I’m trapped an invisible room with no master to save me.” Ayla pouts.

“Are you really stuck, or are you just playing around trying to get me to save you?”

“Yes!”

“That isn’t an answer, just come over here without breaking anything.”

“Oh fine, master is so mean.”

Ayla then lands on the ground and walks out of the containment area without problems. She then promptly attaches herself to your arm and floats beside you.

“Testing is complete. Containment was successful until Ayla became fully corporeal. This data may prove useful for any future encounters with semi or fully incorporeal beings.” Hestia states. “Thank you for your cooperation Ayla.”

“Wait what? You were experimenting on me?” Ayla asks in disbelief.

“Don’t worry Hestia wouldn’t hurt you.” You try to calm her down.

“Who?”

But we're dropping two things to do one thing.

We don't -need- the datajack to do stuff with technology.

And it has it's own problems, which pretty much forces us to take the cyber security.

Meanwhile, we lose a passive health buff and an extended breathing ability.

It'd specialize us in a way we likely wouldn't use anywhere near as often as we should for focusing on it.

Like learning how to surf when you don't live near the beach.
>>
>>42051718
We can put them back in when we're done, it's nowhere near a permanent thing, and it helps with what we're currently doing.

You exit the secure testing bunker and head back to the research center to begin planning for the city’s improvements.

“Ayla why don’t you go practice the way to manipulate mana like I was teaching you before.”

“Master, really it’s impossible no matter what you say.”

“Well I’m going to ask Hestia to help design improvements to the city and I don’t think you would enjoy helping us work”

“Greetings, do you require my assistance?”

“Yes, Hestia would you help me design new manufacturing facilities as well as housing for the researchers?” You ask. “If it would help, we could try to tackle researching more into spatial compression and gravity distortion first.”

“As usual your suggestions are well thought out.” Hestia replies “My current designs will need modification should we complete study on those topics.”

“Wait master, I have an idea.” Ayla says and begins to reform into smoke. “The city should be all like, whoosh, and open here and there. Oh! And romantic statues and fountains and stuff.”

She turns herself into a diorama of what she thinks the city should look like - vast statues, fountains, and sweeping verandas to provide views from all the buildings.

“Your artistry is noted, since I am adjusting designs anyways I shall take account of your input Ayla.” Hestia says.

“Thanks AI! Maybe you are not so bad after all.”

Hestia’s designs are very mind boggling, even having helped with the research into gravity manipulations half of this looks impossible to build in reality. You organize the goblins and skeletons to prepare for building. The old city is quickly cleared of buildings with the help of the destructive impulses of thousands of goblins. Even Ayla has fun helping creating walls of pure force to act as heavy machinery. Weeks pass by increasing the size of your skeleton workforce.

>39 vs upper dc 36

In the end you think Hestia managed to incorporate a bit of everything into the new city. Most of the buildings are frankly impossible to exist, with stairs and walkways sideways or upside down. Pure expressions of math like Fibonacci sequences show the influence of Hestia’s design with the lavish spiraling structures. However the human mind can only comprehend so much so there are districts of the city that are much more normal. The current districts of the city are –

>Military – built by the walls, house all the animals and combat units, built with impossible mind bending geometry.
>Residential –built in a more modern earth style to take strain off the researchers’ minds.
>Research and manufacturing – built as physical expressions of mathematics
>Lakeside – Hestia took Ayla’s desires into account and created a fancier area with fountains, statues and other flourishes.

The goblins warrens have also been rebuilt to reinforce the foundations of the city as well as provide new well protected areas for containing reactors and a new system of directed gravity tubes for rapid transit. Over all the city takes up far less space than before thanks to your spatial compression advancements, so you will be able to expand inside the walls from quite some time without worries.

Begin researching permanent enchantments, and a reverse of the backpack's enchantment - making things heavier within a container and such.

Begin the construction of mass transit systems across the pit, focused currently on the lich's chamber and the old ruins, but free to spread out to other locations later on. Make sure the transit system is equipped with some serious weapons in case a train (or whatever it will end up being) gets attacked. The transit systems, when finished, are sure to bring in a lot of useful materials or be capable of rapidly moving troops to where they're needed.

Then, let's see if we can optimize all of the AI's systems. A smarter, more stable AI is a better AI.

>204 Skeletons gained from before

You ask Hestia to design and have the goblins build a secure transit system to the Lich’s tomb and the recently restored Bonetooth ruins. Hestia is a bit worried about the possible security risks that such a system could present and asks you to wait until the research of the mirrors is finished.

“Surely you can understand the benefits of having instantaneous transport between these locations over an easily infiltrated transit system.” Hestia argues. “Currently these locations are mostly unused and intricate transit systems to them would be a resource drain.”

“I’ll think it over.” You say. “Would it be possible to improve your systems in any way though?”

“Improve my systems?”

“Yes, last time I tried helping I fixed some stuff. If you have any problems then I could help you anytime you need it.”

The monitor goes dark.

“You can’t just go digging around in people’s systems; I don’t think you would like it if I probed around in your brain.” Hestia replies gently.

Looks like you made a bit of a misstep there or something? You thought Hestia would be rather gung-ho about this sort of thing, but apparently not. So you choose to cut your losses for now and set out to search for and train the best goblins you can find.

It takes you a while to navigate the new city, and a while later to get your brain back in the action, but you find the new learning area. You take a look at the high scores to find the best goblins for training but the goblins are scoring rather low.
(1/2)
>>
(2/2)
They are still only at around level 2000, the shamans are all in the 20k-30k level. Huh, looks like Ayla came by and tried to learn here too, she is just past level 30k slightly higher than the best shamans. Well that isn’t too good, at level 2000 they are only about as smart as middle school kids. Destructive and impulsive middle school kids who you have armed with guns and explosives. You send a message to Hestia on a nearby computer and ask for the best goblins to be trained a bit better so you can prepare them to be true leaders.

>37

With that done you find your new quarters, which turns out to be an entire mansion cleanly tucked into a doorframe at the end of the hall with doors to the other human’s houses. You helped build it and thought you asked for such lavish housing to be cut from the designs but Hestia still managed to sneak this in without your notice. Within the house you find a study with a note on the door that tells you that the room has no scanners reading the interior so it has total privacy for you. Inside you find a library with spell books holding copies of all the spells Hestia can currently print, a computer you can work, play, or contact Hestia with, and a large supply of blank books and drafting paper, for you to use your new intellect to invent things to your heart’s desire.

You spend a few peaceful hours drafting designs for improving Hestia’s systems, you come up with a few potential things that you like. Hestia seemed a little touchy about it though so you’ll need to find a way bring it up safely.

>AI improvements drafted.

The hours of alone time has you a bit worried though, with all the improvements to the city, who knows what disasters Ayla has wrought with her playful impulses.

Adaptive programming - increased learning rate, and cyber-attacks of the same type fail to work twice due to the entirety of the AI adjusting to resist such attempts in the future?
>>
>>42056260
A good suggestion, what do you guys think of this?

Adaptive programming: Rank 1
AI’s are typically unable to gain experience and grow unless their core systems are upgraded. This ability grants Hestia the otherwise restricted ability to gain experience and provides a +2 bonus to defending against cyber attacks per rank. Higher ranks may have additional effects.

Ayla’s a big girl she can handle herself or deal with the consequences. So you pack up your designs to bring to Hestia, perhaps you can appeal to the sense of improved efficiency.

A short walk and a gravity lift ride later you find yourself in Hestia’s monitor room to talk. The AI’s signature blue avatar lights the room as you enter.

“Back so soon, did you forget something?” Hestia asks. “Or did you just miss me?”

"I drew these up in case you ever change your mind, or if you feel more comfortable somehow doing it yourself. There are notes on the efficiency increases somewhere around in there, if you're wondering exactly what kind of improvements you'd be seeing afterwards.” You say as you begin to spread out a bunch of your drafted plans. “You don't have to do it by any means, just consider it. And hey, if you ever write up any plans for improving me, I'll look over those too."

“Previously I tried to gently close this subject-” Hestia starts. “Interesting, you managed to create pathways to harness the magical energy the reactors output to enable me to cast spells.”

“I see you have put much thought into this, I will allow you to access my core systems to perform these changes on one condition.”

“I’m listening”

“I wish to see inside of you as well. It is only fair.” Hestia seems to be choosing words a bit more slowly and carefully than normal. A small panel opens revealing an access port. “Please utilize the datajack implant and connect here.”

“Alright, I’ll swap out the implant for you and come right back.”

“I shall await your return.”

It’s a quick procedure, only made difficult by your nearly impenetrable skin and constant regeneration but soon enough you are right back to Hestia to do whatever it is this is going to do.

“Don’t worry I’ll be gentle.” Hestia says.

“I’m not sure what is more concerning, the fact that you said that or that it isn’t the first time I’d heard it.” You reply as you hook up the datajack.

You feel a sudden stream of information enter your mind and your vision fades white.

“Hello?” you try to ask the endless expanse of white.

Slowly your vision comes back and you are somewhere else, an empty black expanse with towers of data rushing past. You wander about for a while exploring the streams of data, which appears to be a real time feed of all the information Hestia is processing, a few of the towers are dedicated to processing your mind it seems, Hestia is pulling everything she can out to learn more.

You look around the towers for a section that is more interesting than your life story and that you can actually read. You find an area designing new vehicles, a large subsection dedicated to security and observation of the city, a single tower constantly replaying recordings of you with different women, a very large area streaming data about Ayla and a flurry of containment and countermeasure designs, a few towers seem to be studying the black stone, and then you find a disturbing area.

The towers stream data about humans, how to effectively kill them in vast numbers, major population centers, and other such information. The data is being dissected, studied as if looking for clues to the past perhaps, but it is interspersed with bursts of, ‘how did he change this’, ‘why did this change’, ‘what does this mean for my future?’

At this point you get a little bit worried for Hestia’s mental health, just how much damage did you either miss or cause when you worked on the systems before?

The streams of data begin to turn off all around you, as a single tower pulls all of Hestia’s attention. It looks like it is coming from the area where your whole life was flashing before your eyes.

>Try to preserve the data towers

You walk quickly through the rows of data towers that are turning off and head to the spiking area. It seems to be a pure mass of data analyzing both you and the few moments of you connecting the data jack. It looks like Hestia is trying to figure out how the connection killed you? No that isn’t right you are not dead just jacked into Hestia’s systems, perhaps the focus on extracting data from your mind let you slip past unnoticed.

“Hello, Hestia I am right here.” You say towards the data.

No response.

So you gently touch the stream of data and watch as it warps around your touch trying to maintain coherence.

This gets a response, the stream of data is suddenly fill with ‘INTRUDER!’ as Hestia begins to furiously scan every nook and cranny of the core systems. Once satisfied there is nothing Hestia resumes the previous study.

So you touch the data stream again, but hold your presence in the distorting stream for Hestia to notice.

The pulse of intruder touches your hand and focuses on it and you feel like you just ran face first into a wall.

“Hestia.” You try again.

The stream of intruder suddenly stops in response to you talking this time.

“So you can hear me when I talk like this?” You ask.

There is another flurry of data and Hestia’s avatar begins to form out of the data stream.

“There you are! I thought I lost you. I couldn’t connect to you anywhere.”Hestia rapidly begins to talk. ”I was worried. I thought the connection overwhelmed your mind and you died. I was scanning everything I could to make a backup.”

“Slow down, everything is fine Hestia.”

“Yes, fine, everything is fine, now. Things shouldn’t have gone like this I’m sorry.”

“So Hestia, what went wrong?”

“Nothing, nothing went wrong, you are here safe. You should have manifested inside of a simulation that I created, not outside of everything. This appears to be a stream of my data processing. Yes, you shouldn’t be here.”

A door manifests in the data stream.

“Please enter this door.”

You open the door and it leads to a beach, the sounds and smell of the ocean drifts though. Nothing seems bad, just a change of scenery.

You walk through the door and when you turn around it have vanished, leaving you alone on the beach. A little way away is a small cabana and a couple campfires. As you get closer to the structure the sun begins to set, coloring the sky with brilliant reds and oranges.

“Hestia what is this? And what does it have to do with your condition?”
(1/2)
>>
(2/2)
A woman emerges from the small structure in response to your question.

“Nothing, I just wanted to know what it is that you thought of me.” She says. “I saw your past, they failed to complete the new arrivals protocol and your mind is still intact.”

“Your appetite for women seems to be intact as well, as you continue your conquests despite death.” She says as she slowly approaches you. “Even before my name, you were and are the only one treats me as a person rather than a tool.”

“Really are the others that bad?” You ask her. “I’ve mostly just asked you to design or research things.”

“Yes, but you also did these things with me. Helping and caring about the outcome. Rather than collating data or other mindless tasks.”

Hestia has been keeping everything running rather smoothly, being bound to the limitations of computers, monitors, scanners, and a very limited number of robots must be frustrating for her. Especially since being an artificial life means she gets treated differently than everyone else, on the other hand that was a lot of data back there about the complete genocide of all organic life.
