Interlude: A Nice Dress for Travel

“It not too plain, is it Diana?” you as your friend and advisor as she finishes packing up her suitcase with things not so easy to come by in the time the two of your are originally from.

The cat turned extremely short woman zips her luggage home with a grunt and then turns to review your choice of clothes. Taking a lollipop out of her mouth and twirling the stick absentmindedly, she steps around you in serious scrutiny. She inspects the hem of the simple white sundress you have selected, feels its material, and notes where it hangs over your knees.

She steps back, as a playful purr escapes her lips.

“Nope, I think its great!” she offers you a thumbs up gesture in approval before resting the stick of the red sweet across her teeth, “You’re really overthinking this, the only people who are going to see you when you arrive are Puu and both of our folks,”

“I know,” you huff and cross your arms, “I just, I just want to look nice when I see them. Even if we aren’t at court, my parents are still the King and Queen of Earth,”

Diana stares at you, an incredulous expression across her face. She walks over the the window and flings it open. Leaning out of the low set portal at the waist, she points in a direction you can’t see beyond the frame.

“The Queen of Crystal Tokyo rose from humble beginnings a few blocks that way,” she tips back into the room as her form shifts into that of a gray colored cat with a purple tint to her fur, “Why are you so hung up over what they’ll think of you when you come home anyway? They know you got destabilized, they’re expecting you to be a bit out of sorts. What is so wrong with being casual?”

You are silent a moment. You are Usagi Tsukino, in this era you go by Usagi Chiba and let most people call you Usa as a nickname. In an era and reality removed from the one which you have chosen to spend most of your life you are the daughter of Neo Queen Serenity, sovereign of an earthly utopia whose seat of rulership is the city of Crystal Tokyo.

Here, you have lived the life of an ordinary girl. There, you are the crown princess and known as the White Lady Usagi Tsukino.

“Because this might be the last homecoming,” you explain softly to your companion as she leaps up to your shoulder, “We may not be coming back here,”

Diana is quiet, but nuzzles her whiskered face against your cheek to comfort you.

It is a nice dress. A perfect dress for your trip. Accepting this, the two of you finalize your packing plans.

Quest 100 Start

You are Mikage Chiba, second year Highschool Student at Juuban Municipal High School and fifteen years old.

Standing in the stairwell near your homeroom, you think on the events of your day while using psychic powers which you posses to communicate with two of your friends on classroom cleanup duty today. You’d go in to talk to them, but the subject matters of many of your conversations these days are private subjects and two other classmates are in there with them.

Not many teenage girls have psychic powers, or any of the assorted abilities you posses that you’ve inherited from your parents. When she was still young, your mother was Sailor Moon, magical guardian of love and justice. That mantle was passed down to your older sister and then to you. After tragic circumstances, you abandoned that identity and duty and let it pass to your younger sister while retreating into yourself as a result of great trauma.

-She keeps glancing over at me,- your friend, Midori Mori, grimaces over the mental connection you establish and presently maintain.

-Maybe because she doesn’t know what to do next,- your best friend, Kairi Osaka, observes, -Umeki-san isn’t very good at dealing with people,-

Your younger sister, Koyomi, recently took up the mantle of Sailor Moon and has been protecting the city from supernatural evil that has complicated ties back to your family. Since facing certain traumatic events from your past you have been secretly supporting your sister and the allies that have risen alongside her through assorted cover identities.

You have not been idle, and more than that you have been obtaining allies of your own. Kairi and Midori have not shied away from your side and with the aid of power given to them become your knights. Under the heroic cloaked guise of Eclipse, you and your knights have protected your sister and her court of Sailor Guardians.
>>
>>42034950

-Just give her time,- you offer comfort to Midori and giggle, -don’t worry about it too much and I’m sure it’ll be fine,-

You can feel the more pragmatic girl roll her eyes and groan. All the same, it makes you feel good to have friends again, you’ve spent far too long keeping yourself alone and distant.

The two of them are cleaning up the classroom with your classmates Saori Umeki and Yoshi Sakurada. For rather specific and individually relevant reasons you don’t want them privy to this conversation.

-Anyway,- Midori huffs, -Are you going to check any clubs out after school today?-

-Don’t know,- you stretch out a bit, -though Keiko gave me a weird card and invited me to the Crowne Arcade after everything is out,-

-She mentioned some kind of meeting with the Senshi when we had the chance to talk while class was letting out,- she muses.

Keiko Sugimoto, a popular girl troubled by years of secret mental health problems that turned out to be attempted possession by a past life of her’s that had succumb to the corruption of cosmic evil, is another of your allies awakened unexpectedly to power of the sun left within her soul stolen long ago by the darkness that once threatened to consume her. Now she fights alongside your sister and her court as Sailor Sun, Sailor Guardian of the Sun.

She and Midori have been friends for years, and now after everything that’s wound up happening they’ve become an item. A fact that they are presently keeping as secret from the world as their magical secret identities lest they catch particular shame or derision for their love.

-I was going to hang out with her at theater club after we’re done cleaning,- she finishes.

-Just what kind of production are they doing this term anyway?- you ask, thinking back to the odd and varied supply of costumes you found ready for use while searching for replacement clothes for Kairi after some bullies cut her skirt and ripped her blouse.
>>
>>42034997

-A bunch of one acts,- well that would explain it.

-Say, Kairi,- you ask the girl who has otherwise been silently sweeping away in the background of this part of the conversation, -What are you doing after you’re done?-

-Probably going to see if I can talk to Umeki-san, and probably go to the nurse’s office to talk to those girls from earlier about what happened,- she thinks to herself as you feel a smile curl to her lips, -Or I could try to get some specifics out of you about what happened on the rooftop with Sakurada-san,-

Well, that was expected from one of them eventually. Slumping against the wall of the stairwell you offer a nervous whimper in your defense. Why are you so easily embarrassed about this now? This is hardly like you, at all.

You can tell by the thoughts at the periphery of both girls that they’re almost done cleaning up the classroom.

>Well, I may need to talk to Yoshi about something first
>Say you’ll talk to her about it when they’re done
>Tell both of them what happened now.
>Oh, that possibly possessing spider creature I found might still be in the science labs
>Actually, you want to head over to the theater club and ask Keiko what’s happening at the crowne

And yeah, need to deal with the spider somehow. Eclipse time, stealth kill?

-Actually,- you say through your embarrassment which they no doubt feel over this mental connection, -I’m going to go check on that spider I left in the science lab. Gotta figure out what it is and put it down,-

The connection is quiet until Midori speaks up.

-There were three girls acting strange,- she observes, -There may be more of them crawling around,-

-Zoisite and Kunzite saw them passing some paper off to someone else,- you say grimly, -There may be more of them. It might be the special power of a strong enemy Shadow, to act through proxies,-

You leave it at that, Kairi about to continue talking to Saori Umeki about her experience being turned into a monster and leading her away from that science lab while Midori readies to leave the classroom heading toward the theater.

You’re already down the hall and entering the lab room with the aquariums and terrariums by then. For the sake of keeping your identity secure against these creatures just in case someone is watching, you first-

The lights are already off in the specialized classroom, not that you need to worry about lights. Your partial transformation into a being capable of absorbing the Chaos energies of these shadow creatures afford you the natural ability to see in total darkness. What you weren’t prepared for was the terrarium you left the spider in to have been moved from one of the lab tables.

Likely stacked against the back wall on a rack of several other creature containers, you turn your attention there and sift through the clear displays. Much to your upset, a few of them that are the right size are entirely empty.

This isn’t good.

Whatever these things are up to, they were specifically targeting you and Kairi because you were associating with Keiko when you’d previously been social pariahs. Shadows are born from negative emotions, so perhaps these spiders are or are tied to someone who is obsessed with her. Not hard to imagine, considering she has her own fan club. Still, you search the room more thoroughly.

For the sake of keeping your identity secure against these creatures just in case someone is watching, you first activate your power to make you a cipher. Not breaking stride through the empty hallway, you slip into your power of No One of Consequence. People will have difficulty recalling your features and details about you thanks to this power, and no one will immediately recognize you.

-

Slowly searching the room, under desks and behind lab supply cabinets, you try to locate the small creature. There remains the possibilities that it escaped, an ally turned it loose, or it crawled into a new mouth and assumed control or influence.

That last thought leaves you to shudder uncomfortably.

Taking another pass at the rack of aquariums and terrariums, you even look underneath to see if it crawled into the dark.

To make certain you miss nothing, you channel the energies of your starseed into your eyes and ears.

Its just as well you do as you turn your eyes up from the floor while still on your hands and knees.

The little sneak, its hiding stuck to the roof of the terrarium you stuck it in. Glossy dark eyes stare down at you as you start to rise when the door to the classroom slides open.

As the door slides open, you stay crouched down beside the island lab desks between you and the door. They give you enough cover to use your disguise pen while still under your other identity obscuring powers.

Less to protect your face, more to grant yourself an air of authority.

Using your power of subtle magic to quell the normally flashy transformation by way of your disguise pen, you take a form meant to inspire academic leadership. Activating the pen you desire to be a science teacher wearing glasses.

As you rise, you are wearing a black pencil skirt, high heels, stockings, a high collared white button down blouse with a red tie. This disguise wears glasses with a loosed chain, and has her hair up in a tightly coiled braided bun. Simple red studs rest in the base of your earlobes, and you wear a white labcoat to finish the ensemble.

The chain to the glasses is broken, all part of the clever visual narrative you’ve constructed in your head to explain why you were on the floor.

Your rise accompanies the turning on of the classroom light. You are holding the supposedly fallen glasses and are re affixing them to their securing chain that hangs from your neck.

“Oh, excuse me,” the familiar voice comes from the doorway as you turn and return the glasses to your eyes, “I didn’t know anyone was here,”

~That’s quite alright,~ you explain as the world blurs slightly from the lenses and you tilt them down your nose to peer over the frames and cross your arms, ~I shouldn’t be working in the dark anyway-~

You pause as you realize it's Yoshi, standing in the classroom’s frontmost doorway looking a bit awkward for having disturbed someone.

“All the same,” he bows quickly and rises, “I’m sorry for disturbing you,”

He begins to step back into the hall.

“Apology accepted,” you wave it off and turn back to the terrariums “if it makes you feel better,”

You don’t want Yoshi getting anymore involved in things than he already is, and as he leaves the room, you turn your attention to the tank where the spider is hiding.

Moving the glass enclosure back to one of the lab tables, you carefully consider your options as you gaze into the creature and let your eyes dissect its nature. Before you destroy this shadow, its best you know what it is you are dealing with exactly. Knowledge of its strength and power pour into you.

To your expectations, the creature poses no immediate threat or challenge to you. Titling your head along the side of the terrarium you watch it descend from the lid by way of the interior walls. While it has no special defenses, you find it capable of limited and conditional spellcasting. You watch as it carefully and slowly positions itself in the center of the glass box and hisses.

As its hissing subsids, you become aware that it isn’t a true shadow, but a projected construct, part of a limited hivemind that functions off of empathy and as expected a parasitic puppetry ability. It seems to be able to confer new abilities onto a bound host, and itself can stick to surfaces, spit venom, and spin webs. It has the same vulnerabilities to purification you’ve encountered before, as well as a weakness to certain sound based abilities.

How many more of these things are there? Who is at the heart of this hive mind? Questions linger with you as you take stock of the situation.

Do they know what happened to their ally?

Looking at this disgusted shiver inducing arachnid, you can’t deny that knowing its composition entices you more than you are grossed out by it. Despite everything you learned about the change that gave you the ability to consume shadow energy, and its relation to Chaos, you still hunger for the darkness within this tiny bite sized morsel.

Calmly, you open the lid of the terrarium and reach in for the spider. Eyeing you carefully it hisses and flails its legs ineffectually from your point of grip. When you lift it up over your head, it stops struggling.

Your mind drifts back to what Tomoe-sensei told you when you saw her the other day. How she and Usa-neesan became monsters because they forgot who they were. Mistress 9 and the Dark Lady, vessels for the being known as Chaos. She believes you are strong enough, and you will not forget yourself.

More than that, you hadn’t noticed how hungry you’d grown for this darkness. Just a taste wouldn’t hurt. Especially since you know how to purge its power from your body.

If you’re hungry all the time, you can’t concentrate. Worse perhaps than having a bit of this dark power within you.

“Itadakimasu,” you whisper in anticipation as you bare your own fangs and bring the chittering and still creature to your open mouth.

After this meal, you imagine you might regret indulging yourself. Isn’t that just the trouble with being decadent?

It surges forward when close enough to your mouth. Legs, mandibles, and pedipalps probing past your teeth and against the soft lining behind your lips. This brings you out of the euphoria of sating your hunger and makes you realize that you just tried to eat a spider.
>>
>>42041616

And there is a spider in your mouth.

THERE IS A SPIDER IN YOUR MOUTH!

Stumbling back, you trip on the high heels of your shoes and fall on your butt. Gasping at the shock, something of the spider’s touches the back of your throat and there is an electrical spark. Something tries to edge itself over your thoughts as your entire body feels momentarily numb. Too many hissing chittering voices and pained screams for you to count in this instance scream into your mind! A command reaches you, a command to give yourself over to a sickness of love.

NO!

You reclaim feeling by force and chomp your teeth down into the creature’s thorax and drink deeply. The spider pops and liquefies in your mouth. The faint amount of darkness within it floods your senses with the euphoria you sought. Black ichor spills out of your lips, the taste coating your tongue is exquisite as your shadow fangs tremble and pulse with want from that sparking appetizer.

Panting heavily, you crawl back to your feet.

You just ate a spider, you wish you were capable of throwing up.

Steadying your breathing, you concentrate on trying to parse through the remnant echoes of the psychic backlash you experienced. You know there are many of them, that is immediately evident. Almost half of the school is linked in this way, at least as far as you can tell still nearby. No telling how many are already away from campus.

The idea that so many of them are out there worries you. So many chittering spiders laughing at your and twitching their mandibles inside people’s mouths. Even more worrisome is the command you remember; a sickening, selfish, and obsessive love for your friend Keiko.

Your tenuous connection doesn’t last long, and you can’t get a confirmation on the singular identity behind all of this, but you do know they were in some capacity aware of what someone just managed to do to one of their puppet spiders. And, you know they are specifically targeting you and Kairi because they don’t believe you to be worthy of Keiko’s attention.

As you drop out of your focus, you find more time than you expected to had passed, still caked in black, your mouth is exceptionally dry.

The black ichor in your mouth drips onto the table, it makes you feel dirty and unclean. You anger bubbles to the surface as you punch the tabletop. Not satisfied, you storm out of the room and head out toward the athletic fields along the back and side of the school.

When you are certain you are alone, you drop your disguise but keep your status as no one of consequence active. Along the outer wall is a long basin with multiple high placed spigots. The cool flow of water washes the taste and the black from your mouth, before quenching your thirst.

Having drunk deeply of the water, a bell sounds across campus announcing the end of the club period. People will be leaving now.

Retrieving your school bag, you make your way to the shoe lockers to touch base with your friends and give an answer to Keiko about her invitation.
>>
>>42042713

When you come to it, your shoe locker is open and empty. Joy.

So, they’re monsters playing at high school pettiness.

First your lunch, then Kairi-chan, and now this? Oh, you are going to bring a can of bug spray and mint oil with you to school tomorrow. When you find whoever is the controlling monster, it will be-

“Mikage-chan,” you hear Kairi’s voice as you fume in front of your show locker with a small bit of exasperation.

~Oh, Kairi-chan,~ you turn to you friend, ~Is everything okay?~

She sighs and holds up her shoes. They’re stuffed with loose rise, hamburger, cut sausages, diced veggies, and a familiar pair of chopsticks meant to match their lunch container.

“I found your lunch,” she says with certain depression.

Glad to be here, as always.
Thanks for keeping the quest going so long.

>Children's Card Games
With weird and over the top consequences.

Or just space elves and their pet monsters.

I feel this ends with giant spider monster, made out of students.

Giant Spider Monster? That's an S class foe for certain, really what's coming earns a D on that grading scale japan uses in games where S is above A.

It's time to d-d-d-d-d-Duel!

They stole our lunch, didn't eat it, and dumped it in Kairi's shoes and stole our shoes?

...spoopy spiders, mang

We need Locate Object.
>>
>>42043010
that is weird.
>>
>>42045838
Well, we've got a set of twins already.
Question is, who it might go with.
>>
I've got a busy day ahead so not much time to work on the recap or cast list...

So, out of curiosity. How would you guys summarize the arcs or characters?

Nothing in depth, just your basic impressions?
>>
>>42042736
>Concern
>>
>>42042906
More a jape.
>>
Celer?
>>
>>42047349
My first thought is that I'm going to need breakfast to take a serious crack at that, but a more general impression is that most characters we have seen have been fleshed out enough that just a basic impression might not do them justice.

Only a small number we don't have a more in-depth idea about what they are like.

Amazonite - the strong woman with whom Hiddenite had a relationship before she died. Brought back by mad shadow science.

Kalunite - seems level headed and good at forming long-term planning, as opposed to the classic smash and grab sort of plans that others have employed. Killed be Kunzite during the fall, member of the Royal Guard, brought back by mad shadow science.

Chau - Probably misspelt. Philanthropist humanitarian billionaire CEO with deep ties into funding and study with PIT. While not actually verified yet, we totally think he is at the very least the next level up in the bad-guy hierarchy above anyone we know about.

Gai - I was just thinking last night that it is sad that we haven't gotten to know Gai more. I mean, I imagine he appreciates being treated like just another handsome Earth kid (complete with getting drawn into forming love-polyhedrals). Generally mellow guy that feels things very strongly, seems a responsible sort (likely from being the oldest of so many siblings) but ready to see more of the universe away from his family.
We haven't talked to him much since a pair of his siblings appeared. Siblings that have a taste for adventure and don't think things through very well.

Umeki - The invisible kid type, blends in and does not engage in social activities. Trying to change that now, but seems to only be guided by fictional examples rather than any grasp of how people work. Has seen some bullying, particularly at Midori's hands.

Oh right breakfast, I needed to get food still.

?

Two sets of twins.
>>
>>42052901
Could be triplets and including the mother as well.
>>
For next interlude.

Children's Card Games takes it.

Here's what you missed

>Pass Preparation - A Crowne Arcade attendant readying a few additional Crowne Passes

>Concern - a concerned class rep searches the school for someone he thought was going to have a few answers for him

>Four Heartbeats - "Whatever we are, we're free. Borealis isn't getting his hands back on us,"
>>
>>42054745
Wondered in four heartbeats might be that, but baby shadowruns were amusing.
>>
>>42054745
>>Concern - a concerned class rep searches the school for someone he thought was going to have a few answers for him
We will need to catchup with him.. not that we have much in the way of answers.
>>
>>42057190
What is our long term aim with him anyway?
>>
>>42056402
We felt killing intent directed toward us specifically when we almost ran into them, think we should be concerned?
>>
>>42058508
If nothing else, getting to know each other again.
We'll see where that goes from there.

>>42059627
Yeah, detecting bloodlust is certainly a thing that should make us feel concerned. Though at least it might be that they aren't under Borealis' control, so there's that.
>>
>>42060102
Well, they came off of something he pulled here from not-here that lost a hunger off against a crazied us.
So their hard feelings towatd us may exist independently of the Enemy.
>>
>>42058508
To wear his skin and go dancing.
>>
>>42064083
A bit extreme
>>
>>42061474
They may know the beast wants to eat them, and they are alive independent from their former masters and maybe of their former hosts? That might cause quite the dilemma once we find out.
>>
>>42064984
I am open to other suggestions.
>>
>>42066151
Romantic boat ri- no, that tempts concussion by time traveling toddlers...

Seeing a movie together?
>>
>>42066151
Step 1 go to his show as the beast

Step 2 be seen there as the beast at one of his shows again

Step 3 other boy who we may or may not have a thing going on with in an ambiguous fashion catches wind of the beast at the concert.

Triangle begins. Competition begins. Slowly introduce them to our other faces and see who pleases who the most as we recover.

Even though Miki is already back to us, we can still have fun acting the part. Won't she throw them both for a loop.
>>
>>42066151
Go to his show, destroy the mosh pit, see what he's all about now because he seems a touch less proper than in Junior high, speak with Kalunite in person and begin operation infiltration.
>>
>>42064083
Wear all the skin?

>Concern - a concerned class rep searches the school for someone he thought was going to have a few answers for him

now I feel bad, I wanted this but I couldn't turn down CHILDREN'S CARD GAMES
>>
>>42070133
No one can turn them down.

And this will hopefully be a good settup for a later scene.
>>
>>42066151
And I look forward to what you will eventually do with all your options.
>>
>>42049926
So we know about Amazonite, Hiddenite, and Kalunite, whose their fourth man?
>>
>>42049926
Have you had breakfast yet? Perhaps a few breakfasts?
>>
>>42073621
I think we had an indication that it was Malachite, though that could be my imagination since I can't recall why I thought that and no other details.

>>42074979
The people we don't know well list thins after that, and suffers from my lack of name remembering.

The Primroses, who may not be an actual gang so much as a group of friends. Which include a famous clothing designer, a tough girl with some sense, a tough-acting girl with less sense, a friend who is entirely too positive and happy, ..and some others?

There's a fan club president who is full of spooky spiders.

Oh, forgot a big one I meant to include with the last one:
The Miracle Child - Son of (presumably early-stage crystal-nanite-infected) Umino and Naru. Publicly died stillborn within the past year, raised in a PIT facility, has developed rapidly into a young boy. Very intelligent, enjoys letters his sister writes to the brother see thinks dead. Chau is now aware of the boy.

I'm confused, is Naru aware of his existence? Because I don't remember.
>>
>>42078363
Yes, yes she is. She is also very conflicted about not being able to tell her daughter about it.

Also, in doing a series canon review again, I kind of hate myself for what I've put Naru and Umino through.

>>42077101
I thought I gave his name as Hematite in the title of an interlude that got missed in a play on "stop, hammertime,"

Also, yeah you're only missing two of the fake girl gang that was trying to get the beast's attention when they had nowhere else to turn.

And yes, the fan club president is full of spiders as she is now.
>>
>>42078612
Ah yes, I recall being surprised that Hematite wasn't handling the metal gig. Being the more metal one and all.
>>
>>42079681
Hematite has his own thing going.

That will hopefully be made clear when he has his chance to monologue.

Meanwhile, I feel bad that I'd still like to see Nephrite and Naru have that chocolate parfait. Even though that by the time we could make that happen we could likely return Umino as well. Pioneering whole new aspects to the love triangle science.
>>
>>42079751
I predict a 50% chance of throwing things during the monologue.
>>
>>42083659
Are those things, perhaps, roses?
>>
>>42084579
I would give that a high likelyhood.
>>
>>42085016
Should we throw one really big rose? What about our hail of roses?
>>
>>42086254
Mm, we do have both options, which does remind me that we seriously need to buy some roses so we can do these things more often.
>>
>>42086431
Can we mark that as an after school activity for today?

We will soon start carting around our emergency roses.

Looking at this quest, one of the more painful ways for this to end is like series 1 of Sailor Moon. Major heroic sacrifices every which way and Silver/Gold power being used to say STFU and GTFO to whatever real big bad appears and the everything is reset, like non of it ever happened. Mikage and the others are just normal girls living their lives, an major parts of the world are reset to our whim (Umino not dead, Midori's mom never killed herself, happier endings all around for any who fell, etc) with Luna, Artemis, and Chibi Diana having a voice over that maybe it's better this way, and they'll all drift into becoming friends again anyhow.

Then Usagi walks in demanding to know if time had just been reset again, because it feels like it did last time. "Damnit Luna don't keep me out of the loop, what happened? Did I die? Did my babies die? It was my babies, wasn't it?! WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BABIES!"

Because it discounts personal growth on Mikage's part, and throws all those relationships she's built away. Sure, until the next big thing happens she'll be a happy girl with no memory of thinking herself a murderer...but it's just kind of sad.
>>
>>42093871
It wouldn't even be the same cast at that point, so I can't see it happening.
>>
>>42096009
>>42093871
Not going to lie, a thought similar to that had a place in my early notes, but was nixed just as early.
>>
>>42093871
Nah, we'll end up with bring people back and they and everyone else remembering them die and all the trauma and awkwardness that goes with that.
As for the everyone dying pull out all the stops, Mikage is actively trying to subvert that possibility and try to access all the juju we can to protect everyone. Like trying to heal the Golden Crystal without waiting for a traumatic moment to trigger it.
>>
>>42096920
Just be Batman and we should be fine.
>>
>>42098426
Has that ever worked, long term and emotionally, for batman?
>>
>>42099202
Depends on who is writing at time.
>>
>>42099202
Sometimes.
