So, let's see, news.

Sorry about missing Thursday, but there's no way that's gonna work long-term, haha. Long story short, that day just sucks it right out of you, it's long and the drive back is... difficult. We may just move to Saturday as a solution, since I'm able to stay up and sleep in tomorrow a bit, haha! We're in the last stretch of '89 though, so we'll take a break before the sequel starts up, and maybe my schedule next semester won't be quite so brutal.

It's raining by the time the five of you make it to St. John's lodge, the clouds having rolled in while you were eating. It's that kind of bullshit rain you've always hated, the kind where it's coming down just hard enough to be miserable, but not hard enough to make enough noise through a building to be relaxing.

You'd used your coat to keep the girls mostly dry on the way inside, coming back and doing the same for Rachel. She'd barely murmured her thanks before slumping off to your apartments, aided by Wendy, leaving you and the girls alone in the entryway for a minute. You'd been about to lead them upstairs yourself when you were stopped by Lady Dowding.

"Sir Bishop." She'd said, invoking your name like some sort of order. You'd stifled a yawn and tried to feign full wakefulness as you'd turned.

"Lady Dowding." You respond. "Evening."

She laughs. "Closer to morning, I'm afraid. I don't mean to keep you, you all must be tired. I was downstairs when you came in." She looks at your girls and smiles. "How was your trip?" The question is addressed to them directly.

"Good." Stasya supplies, her voice only just barely audible.

"Good!" the older woman responds, looking at you again. "You dears must be tired, I expect you'll want to be finding your beds, I won't keep you any longer." She strolls away before you can respond probably off to her own rooms.

You have to wait for Wendy to come back downstairs- she apparently just showed Rachel to your rooms and helped her find the closet and the bathroom, then had the presence of mind to come back down. She leads you off into the north wing of the building, walking along the hallway surprisingly quietly before stopping in front of a wooden door.

She hands you the key and smiles. "I hope the furnishings are acceptable." She says. "I admit I had some help from Miss Tabitha and Miss Katya."

You open up the door to find the room furnished... actually shockingly similarly to your apartment back in San Diego. A leather couch along one wall faces a fairly nice entertainment center, while the walls are both decorated with paintings of witches and fighters in flight- one, you think, had to have been commissioned, a tomcat against a setting sun with the silhouette of a witch above and in front of it.

She stands in the door as you look around the room. "They're rather small, only two bedrooms in these apartments." She says. "Some of the ones on the the other wing are much larger, but..."

"They're great, Wendy." You get in through a yawn. "Where are you?"

"Oh, down the hall." She says, gesturing. "Miss Tabitha's rooms have servants quarters, they're quite nice." She looks around, guiltily.

[x] ..... but?

You stand there for a minute, expecting her to finish the sentence.

Eventually, you decide she's not going to without some prompting. "But?" You ask.

"Well, I-" She looks around again. "That is, I mean, I'm not really a servant a-and I shouldn't be using the room- "

You laugh. "Is that what you're worried about?"

"If anyone found out-" She says.

You laugh again. "If anyone says anything we'll take care of it. Don't worry about that kind of thing, Wendy. We'll handle it if it comes up, ok? You're always welcome to stay with us." You pause. "Well, at least with me. Ok?"

She nods, looking a little more at ease.

You yawn again. "Ok, I'm going to bed. You're welcome to stay, but-"

She shakes her head. "No, I won't bother you anymore. Thank you for everything though. It's..." She hesitates. "It's nice to have met people like you and miss Tabitha."

You smile. "We're glad to have met you too. Now go get some sleep, ok?"

She nods, closing the door as she heads down the hall.

You poke your head into the girl's bedroom to find them both sleeping already, Stasya clutching a poncho liner that, you assume, is yours, while Lilya's got her arms wrapped around her pillow, her head resting straight on the mattress.

>>
In your own bedroom, you find Rachel sprawled out on the bed, one leg dangling over the side. She managed to get her boots off, at least, you think, changing into your pajamas, such as they are- clean PT shorts and an undershirt, and climbing into the bed. It doesn't take her long to migrate towards the nearest source of heat- you- and cuddle up to it, managing, somehow, as if by magic, to thrash all the blankets into a wadded-up mess in the process.

Still, it doesn't take you very long to fall asleep either.

You're woken up, it seems, far too early, by the smell of coffee and bacon. Opening one eye, you note Rachel isn't up- she's managed to wedge herself, if anything, even closer to you. "Is that bacon?" She asks.

"Get me some? I dun wanna get up." She continues, before you can respond.

[x] You know, I kinda spoil you.

"You know, I kinda spoil you." You say, smiling.

"Mmm. kinda." she says through a yawn, rolling away from you enough to gather the blankets around her in a sort of cocoon. "I'll pay you back sooner or later."

"I'm sure." You say, climbing out of the bed and heading out of the bedroom and into the kitchen.

Wendy's cooking, though by the looks of it she's not alone. Your suspicions of that are confirmed when a pair of slender arms wrap themselves around your midsection. "Hey there, Pilot." Ice's voice says from behind you.

"Hey there, witch." You respond, turning around to return her hug. "How's things?"

"Mmm. Good." She says, smiling up at you. "Better, now. Breakfast?"

"Yeah, lemme get a plate for Rachel, then I'll come out and eat. Are the girls up yet?"

"Not yet." She says "But I'll get them up here pretty soon."

You nod- you'd planned to if she wasn't going to. "So what's the word?" You ask, getting a plate down and pantomiming to Wendy to load it up with some bacon and a couple pieces of toast.

"Well, they're starting to demobilize units." Ice responds. "They're focusing on guard and reservists first. VF-5 is already headed home too."

"So we're the only mixed squadron in Europe?" you ask, looking over at her.

"From the pacific fleet." She corrects. "I talked to Admiral Nixon last night, before you got back. He wants us to remain in theater until we've got a better grip on what's going on in the USSR. Probably a couple of months."

"Here in London, or here in Europe?" You ask, taking the loaded plate from Wendy. "Thanks Wendy."

"Europe, probably here in London." She says. "Torun is going to the air force, and they need to process out everyone before we can go back to the sara."

She looks over at Wendy. "And we need to get Wendy squared away, I'll be doing that with her today."

If we lewd Wendy into the harem. Then who is the maid?
>>
>>42037167
Err, hi, newcomer here.

She is still maid. Just married to us, that's all.

And is this polygamy or still harem? How do the girls like each other?

>>42037387
It's not really alien technology. The Blackcat that we flew before we got the Wyvern was basically a F-22 Raptor stuck inside of a F-14D Super Tomcat. And she was beautiful.

I'd wager that the Corsair is pretty much the picture-perfect representation of our Blackcat.

[x] Need help?

"Need any help?" You ask, taking a piece of bacon off the plate and chewing on it, leaving part of the strip hanging out of your mouth.

Ice reaches up and snaps it off, popping it into her mouth. "Not really, no. It's not something you can really help with anyway. But we'll be gone most of the day after breakfast."

You nod. "Lemme go give Rachel her bacon and I'll be back out."

Ice nods, and you step back in the bedroom. Rachel's still in bed, sprawled back out, managing, somehow, to occupy the whole space. Her head pops up when she hears the door open, and she regards you with one open eye, the other still closed.

"Bacon?" She queries, sounding hopeful.

"Bacon." You confirm, walking over to sit next to her on the bed, handing her the plate.

"Thanks Frank." She says. "It's too cold to get up."

"It's like seventy." You say, quirking an eyebrow at her. "How much do you take from your familiar anyway?"

She shakes her head. "Fuck you. Too cold. And ask Tabby or Wendy if you want the witching one oh one course. I didn't pay enough attention in school to tell you."

"Thankfully, our daughters take after me." You say with a grin.

"Hmph." She responds. "You just wait."

You laugh. "Gonna have to get a bigger apartment?"

"I was thinking, you know. A house." She says. "A good-sized one. I don't know if I plan to stay in, but I bet Ice is gonna."

"And I haven't decided yet." You supply. She nods.

"Right. So, see? House." She says. "I'll be out in a couple minutes. I'm just gonna lay here a bit longer, ok?"

You nod and head back out of the bedroom- and are met by Stasya and Lilya, both still in their 'pajamas'- namely, one of your undershirts on each of them. The shirts are long enough to cover them down to their upper thigh, and apparently comfortable enough to sleep in. "Morning girls," You greet, returning their hugs. "Sleep well?"

1/2
>>
"Yes papa." Lilya says, while Stasya nods. "Is it breakfast time?"

"Yep." You say, pointing both towards the table and gently pushing them in that direction. "Wendy cooked, be sure to thank her."

"Thank you, Wendy." They say in unison. Wendy, her apron still on and an oven mitt over one hand, leans out to nod at them, smiling the whole time.

Breakfast is fairly quick- Katya wanders in fairly shortly after you sit down, and demands Wendy join you at the table. She hesitates, but eventually does so. She asks about Anya, and you pass along the messages for her- and Anya's request.

Katya pauses. "She wants me to go there?" She asks, looking first at you, then at Ice.

You nod. "Yeah, she asked a couple times. I think she's kinda lonely without you there."

"She is saying I am helping her to adjust." Katya says. "Perhaps I should go there to visit her."

"If you do, you can't take Frank." Ice says. "He's had enough time off, and I'm supposed to keep him here until we're demobilized. I can put in for leave for you, though, a two week pass."

"I will think on this." Katya states, then grins. "But I am thinking there is other news that we should be discussing. Tabitha? Are you wanting to tell Frank, or should I?"

"I-." Ice pauses, turning red, then looks at you. "Frank, I'm pregnant."

The entire table goes quiet for a minute, then Stasya looks at you. "Papa, what's pregnant?"

At least it breaks the tension a bit.
>>

MOVE 5: Reinforcing the Back Rank

TEST EXERCISES HAVE BEEN CALLED OFF for the day but, nonetheless, the Asuka II’s deck was still abuzz with activity. Deck crews went about their work as if they were on full combat alert. Tractors rolled about, tugging items that were taking extra space on the topside, bringing them belowdecks for storage. Inside the bridge, the air officer kept an eye out on the portside, occasionally pulling up his binoculars to see further ahead.

Aikawa glanced at his wristwatch again before shaking his head. Bringing up his own binoculars to observe the portside, he muttered, “I know there’s such a thing as taking the scenic route, but this is just too much.”

“They are fifteen minutes late, Admiral,” Tsukishiro commented as she pocketed her own watch.

“Yes, thank you for reminding me, Commander,” Aikawa replied sarcastically. He yawned and stretched, seemingly bored by all this waiting. To be fair, there was nothing that could be done about it; the call came in straight from Naval Headquarters, and when they tell you to wait, you freaking WAIT. Still, there was something that bothered Aikawa about the whole situation. HQ did not give any specifics as to who was coming aboard, and that would imply that the visitor was either someone with three chrysanthemums on his shoulder, or someone with a shady personality and a blank sheet for a dossier.
>>
>>42038294
Thanks for the run boss.

1 down, 4 to go (no, not the kids you sick fucks)
>>
>>42038342
Seeing her superior frowning, Tsukishiro inquired, “Is something the matter, Admiral?”

“Ahh, err, no, it’s nothing,” Aikawa replied absentmindedly. “I was just, err, thinking about those rumors going around. You know, the ones about the Chinese negotiating peace terms?”

“If I may remind you, Admiral Aikawa, listening to baseless rumors is one thing that a senior officer, much less someone of your rank, should never do. It does not reflect well on your character,” Tsukishiro exclaimed with thinly-veiled annoyance.

Aikawa shrugged. “With an attitude like that, it’s no wonder you still don’t have a boyfriend.”

“I don’t see how that seems relevant to the topic at hand, sir.”

“Oh come on! Can’t you take a joke for once Makoto?”

“Still not seeing how this is relevant, Admiral.”

“Man, you are one tough customer,” Aikawa replied, giving up. “Anyway, back to the topic, don’t you think it would be nice if all this fighting would be done and over with? I mean, at least we won’t have to worry about the kids getting hurt anymore, right?”

“Sir, you do realize that, just because the fighting would stop, it doesn’t mean we’ll be ordered to stand down, right?” the executive officer replied. “We are a test and experimental force, and as such, our skills will be needed in peacetime more than ever in order to keep our Navy’s fighting edge.”

“Geez, I ask Tsukishiro a straightforward question and she comes back at me with a lecture. Talk about strict,” Aikawa said softly, pouting.
>>
>>42038294
Thanks for the run Diva~ and yeah like who didn't see that one coming.
>>
>>42038361
Tsukishiro was not amused. “I heard that, sir. You can’t sway me by trying to act cute.” Before Aikawa could say a word in edgewise, the executive officer turned her attention to the bridge’s radio. “CIC, bridge here. Got anything on your scopes?”

“CIC here, nothing so far, bridge,” the CIC officer responded on the other line. “If they are coming like HQ said, they’re either very late, or doing a really good job of hiding themse—wait. Saki, can you bring that up again?” A couple of moments pass before the CIC officer came back on the radio. “Bridge, I think we got who you’re waiting for: portside 0-8-0, range 700, 140 knots. It looks like they’re trying to make a show by popping up on radar so close to us.”

Soon enough Aikawa and Tsukishiro were scrambling to the portside observation deck, ranging their binoculars in the direction stated by the CIC officer. In the distance, at least five Sea Hawks can be seen in tight formation. “If they managed to avoid radar detection until now when they intentionally showed themselves, they probably flew dangerously close to the sea surface,” Aikawa thought. “And I thought Nozomi was the only one who did that on a regular basis…”

The bridge radio came alive again, this time with a different voice on the line. “Snow Fox, Snow Fox, this is Tanuki 1-6, requesting permission to offload personnel and cargo. I say again…”

Aikawa fixed his command cap and dusted off his jacket. Turning to his executive officer, he said, “I guess that’s our cue. Shall we go, Makoto?”

Tsukishiro adjusted her glasses and fixed her hair bun. “Right behind you, Admiral.”

THE BESPECTACLED MAN SIGHED IN RELIEF as the Seahawk finally touched down on the carrier’s deck. He peeked out through the adjacent window as he rolled down the sleeves of his blue shirt, buttoning up his vest afterwards. After readjusting his bolo tie and putting on his grey coat, he turned to his companion. “So, how do I look? Do I appear respectable enough to be in the presence of an admiral now?”

His companion did not respond, instead pointing to his hair.

“Hmm, I guess I forgot to fix my hair, again,” The first man replied as he pulled out a comb, splitting his hair a little above the left eye. While he was working on his hair, the cabin door opened, and the crewman who opened it beckoned the two of them to get off.

The first man stretched as soon as he got off the Seahawk, while his companion took care of unloading their bags. “Ah, this brings back memories! It’s been so long since I set off to sea like this.” He smiled contently as he surveyed his surroundings, getting a better view of the carrier’s top deck now that he was not limited by the small window. “Man, she’s really a majestic ship. I didn’t think she’d look cooler up close…”

“I’m glad you appreciate her, then. Most of the non-Navy people I’ve met said they find her design too foreign,” someone said from behind him. Turning in the direction of the voice, he saw a man in a faded navy working uniform and command cap, flanked by a younger woman with a newer-looking uniform.

“Admiral, I do believe introductions are in order,” the female officer remarked. Turning to address the visitor directly, she added, “If I may interject, mister visitor, it is unwise to not wear a life preserver while travelling over water, whether travelling by sea or air. Reckless endangerment is not something that the Navy condones.”

The man raised an eyebrow at the remark but he let it slide. “I’ll take note of that for my next trip, miss. For now, please let me proceed to the introductions. Doctor Yuuya Nanbara, at your service,” he exclaimed while bowing low. “And this is my assistant, Ensign Seijin Kurenai from the Research Bureau. Seijin, go ahead and say hello.” Kurenai gave a general bow to both officers, not speaking the whole time and maintaining a serious expression.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Doctor Nanbara, Ensign Kurenai. I’m Comma—Rear Admiral Kazuhiko Aikawa, commanding officer of the Asuka II and her test support flotilla. This is my executive officer and flotilla chief-of-staff, Commander Makoto Tsukishiro.” Tsukishiro gave a low bow to both guests as the admiral continued. “Sorry about earlier. Makoto is a stickler for rules and such, so just try not to antagonize her. Don’t tell her I told you that.”

“I can hear you perfectly well, Admiral,” Tsukishiro interjected sardonically, causing Nanbara to chuckle.

“Thanks for that piece of advice, Admiral. In return, let me warn you about calling Seijin old, just because he’s always scowling and has pure white hair. It’s just his work stressing him out, see?” Nanbara exclaimed, leaning closer to Aikawa while making a whispering motion.

Kurenai cleared his throat loudly, apparently unimpressed by his superior’s antics. He immediately handed over a brown envelope to Nanbara, who exclaimed while pouting, “Can’t even take a joke for once. You’re such a killjoy, Seijin!”

Kurenai gave Nanbara an unamused look before responding. “We have business to attend to, sir. We’d best focus on that.”

Nanbara shrugged before turning back to the admiral, handing over the envelope to Aikawa as he did so. “Sorry about that Admiral, I guess we should get back to the matter at hand. Most of the information you need to get an understanding of the current arrangement is in the envelope, but we wouldn’t mind briefing you if you still need some clarification. Don’t worry, most of this stuff’s not top secret. You can rest assured that you won’t get killed if you share the information.”

Aikawa chuckled lightly at the last statement. After browsing some of the contents of the envelope he turned to Tsukishiro. “Commander, have the boys carry the doctor’s stuff over to the auxiliary utility room. You’ll be coming with us to the briefing room so we can sort this whole thing up.” Tsukishiro nodded in response, before turning to a nearby group of blueshirts who were watching as the Seahawk crews unloaded their payload.

With that done, the admiral exclaimed, “Well then, I guess we should be going, yes? I’ll have the briefing room set up for us. Right this way, doctor.”

As they made their way to a nearby hatch, Nanbara felt the distinct feeling that someone was watching him. He looked behind him to check, but there was no one there. “Must be my imagination,” he whispered to himself as he continued on his way.

“CATALYST-TYPE MAGIC AMPLIFICATION FOCUS? What the hell is that?”

Aikawa prided himself in having rudimentary knowledge in the workings of striker units, thanks to being friends with a former witch. He could recite parts of the process that strikers undertake to convert magical energy into thrust, albeit with some difficulty. He can troubleshoot some striker problems even without a manual. Somehow back in his piloting days, he even convinced a rival squadron leader that, if he had magic, he could fly strikers for at least 12 seconds.

And yet here he was, having trouble wrapping his head around one of the experiments Nanbara plans to implement during the course of his stay. “Whoever’s in charge of the Research and Development Bureau is a raging lunatic with a fetish for overcompensation,” Aikawa exclaimed as he slammed the envelope onto the table. “THIS KIND OF HARDWARE IS JUST STRAIGHT-UP IMPOSSIBLE TO DEVELOP, DAMMIT!!!”

His raging and frothing at the mouth was interrupted, however, by a sudden knock at the hatch. As soon as he opened it, he saw Sanada leaning against the frame, her arms crossed and a smirk across her face.
>>
>>42038487
“Are you frustrated?” the chopper pilot inquired in a bemused tone.

“Well, I… uh… Wait.” The admiral paused, trying to think of a good comeback, while Sanada just looked at him expectantly. A few seconds later, he exclaimed, “Well-played with the Kircheis line there, Nozomi. Well-fucking-played.”

“I aim to please, my dear Admiral. I know you absolutely ABHOR that guy,” Sanada replied while doing a mock curtsey. She then went inside Aikawa’s room without a by-your-leave, heading straight for the admiral’s desk. “Ooh, what do we have here~?”

Aikawa managed to grab Sanada’s hand before she got a hold of the envelope. “Sorry, you’ll need a higher clearance level to see what’s inside that envelope ahead of the rest of your fellow pilots. I still haven't determined which of that thing's contents are top-secret and… whoa!” was all Aikawa could say before Sanada’s tugging to get away from his grip caught both of them off-balance, sending them crashing to the floor.

“Well, well, this is quite the compromising position we're in, eh, Kazu~?” Sanada exclaimed as she was straddled on top of Aikawa, one hand still being held by the admiral, her face very, very close to his. “It would be mighty embarrassing if someone walked in on us now…”

Aikawa regarded the situation he was in, before it all clicked together. Looking his friend in the eye, he stated sarcastically, “Oh great, you got something interesting on your mind again. I can see that, so can you please stop acting like a girl and get off me now?”

“Oh man, and just when things were starting to get interesting,” Sanada exclaimed with mock disappointment. She stood up and brushed herself off, before offering a hand to Aikawa to help him get up. “I keep telling you, you should drop that kind of attitude when around women. You’ll never get married that way.”

“Gee, thanks for the sound advice, oh wise and noble teacher,” the admiral smirked. “Why don’t you try to apply your own lessons on yourself for once huh?”

Sanada snapped her fingers at Aikawa in response. “Focus, Kazu, focus! We’re not going anywhere with this conversation.” Walking over to the coffee maker and pouring herself a cup, she continued. “I’ll be honest with you Kazu, I really can’t shake the nagging feeling I get when I’m around those two girls. I saw them in the hangar earlier while they were checking out their strikers under Suribachi’s supervision and… I don’t know… the innocence that they’re showing just doesn’t feel right.”

Aikawa snatched the cup away from his friend before Sanada could finish drinking, downing it in one go even as the helicopter pilot desperately tried to grab the cup back. “You know, it’s actually pretty funny, seeing you act all paranoid and whatnot. It doesn’t fit you at all,” the admiral exclaimed. “Anyway, like I told you before, you shouldn’t think too much about it. You’re just… I don’t know, taken aback by how much potential those kids have within them. It’s the overbearing power levels, I guess. Or the old guard being in awe of the new breed… yeah, I think that’s it.”

Sanada leered at her friend. “You are honestly not helping here.”

Aikawa sighed. As he put the cup back near the coffee maker, he stated, “Look, the only thing that’s not going to help us here is worrying okay? To be honest…” He looked at the envelope on his desk thoughtfully before continuing. “To be honest, I’m worried about a lot of things myself.”

“Oh,” was Sanada’s only reply.
>>
>>42038544
The admiral chuckled softly. “Yeah, I’m worried too. I’m worried about how the next few months will be for us. You’ve heard of the rumors about the Chinese, yes? Well, I’m not entirely convinced. Things are just looking… too easy. I have this nagging feeling that the worst is yet to come, and that we’d eventually be thrown into the meat grinder, witches and all.” He turned back to his desk, tapping the envelope. “Doctor Nanbara claims that what he has in this envelope will help our pilots and witches survive on the front. I know he means well and that he is extremely confident that his experiments here will succeed, but…”

“Okay, okay, you got me, so enough with the guilt-tripping. I’m feeling bad as it is,” Sanada conceded, raising her hands up in mock surrender.

“Good to know you’ve seen things my way,” the admiral responded.

“Heh, it’s more like I’m just feeling sorry for a schmuck like you,” Sanada retorted. “To think that a self-centered geezer like you actually thinks about the greater good of his crew, psh.”

“Hey now, that’s—” Aikawa’s witty reply was interrupted by a ring on his office phone. Annoyed, he let the phone ring three times before picking it up. “Aikawa speaking. This better be im—”

“Sir, the Russians just nuked their own border,” Tsukishiro exclaimed with calm urgency.

For a moment, only the hum of frantic activity on Tsukishiro’s side of the line can be heard, as Aikawa tried to process what his executive officer had said.

“Sir? Admiral, are you still there?”

Aikawa tried to open his mouth to speak, but in an instant, everything faded to black.

She was running, and she was terrified. Why she was running, she couldn’t explain, nor could she specify why her heart was hammering so hard in her chest it felt as if it would rip itself from her body at any moment, why sweat streamed from every pore, and why her lungs heaved in great gulps of air despite her lack of fatigue. All she knew was that to stop–to hesitate–for even a split-second, would doom her.

“Anya,” a sly, cruel voice whispered. For a moment, she almost froze as panic seized her.

She knew that voice.

She pumped her legs harder, willing herself to go faster, to get as far away as she could from that voice and the man behind it. She was in the middle of a dark field that seemed to stretch on as far as she could see, with nowhere to hide in sight.

“I’m disappointed Anya.”

Suddenly she was blown off her feet. She rolled gracelessly, feeling her knees and shoulders scrape against the grass. The young witch yelped as she tumbled head over heels until finally she stopped, collapsed in a heap.

Anya picked herself up, shivering as the temperature seemed to abruptly drop.

Then a hand clamped around her throat.

With a strangulated squeak, she was lifted into the air. A long, thin, cloudy limb was wrapped around her neck, exerting not enough pressure to starve her of air completely, but enough to make breathing a distinctly uncomfortable affair.
>>
At the other end of the limb, was his face. She knew it would be. Even now, he appeared as if his visage had been hewn from the earth by a carver with a singularly black heart; a scarred, craggy face leered at her with a sadistic sneer. His blond hair was cropped short and starting to grey, but far from softening, it served more to harden his thickset build, and highlighted his greenish-grey eyes. Below the neck, his body was a humanoid mass of roiling, thick smog that rippled and writhed like it had a mind of its own.

“C-c-Colonel,” Anya choked; her eyes wide as dinner plates. She clawed at the limb that held her but her scratches were rushed and panicked, and the thing wearing Colonel Yevgony Borisovitch Volgin’s face held her fast.

“Anya, my favourite witch,” the Colonel said, his voice soft and light in tone, as if he were greeting an old friend. “It has been far, far too long. Have you enjoyed your vacation?”

‘I…’ Anya croaked, unable to speak. She hadn’t seen Colonel Volgin in her dreams for so long she had almost managed to convince herself she was finally free of him and his vile influence.

“Oh no, my poor, misguided little tool,” Volgin cooed mockingly, “you are never going to be free of me. I made you. You and your dear little sisters. How are Stasya and Lilya, by the way? I do miss them so.”
>>
The thought of Volgin’s reach extending back to the two younger girls sparked a flare of fierce resistance in her.

“Don’t you *touch* them, *monster*!” she spat.

The thing wearing Volgin’s face feigned shock, raising a hazy limb to its mouth like a gossiping mother who has just been told a particularly juicy nugget of information. The expression faded in an instant, replaced once more by the mocking grin.

“That’s not a decision you get to make, Anya. You, Stasya, Lilya; all three of you are mine. Your thoughts are mine, your bodies are mine, your very *souls*. Are. *Mine*. For as long as you live, and wherever you think to hide, you cannot escape me. None of you can, and none of you will. It may take a year, it may take a decade, but I will find you once more, and when I do my dear sweet…” he trailed off, injecting a note of menace into his stony voice, “there will be a reckoning. Oh yes, indeed there will. For you see Anya, we in the GRU are not in the business of either forgetting, or forgiving, and those fools you selfishly decided to suckle up to will be the first to suffer.”

“No,” Anya whispered in horror. “No!” she gargled, tears starting to spill from her eyes. “Please don’t take my family from me again! I’ll do whatever you want!”

Volgin tutted and shook his head, “Oh, little Anya, if it were as simple as that then this world would be a very different place indeed. Don’t worry though; I won’t be so cruel as to make you watch…”

Then, all of a sudden, the pressure on her throat was gone and Anya dropped to the ground, clutching at her throat and drawing great lungfuls of air. Before her fallen figure, the nightmare took a step back away.

“Wha–” Anya gasped, propping herself up on an elbow and pushing herself up.

“This is the future you chose for them, little girl,” the Colonel said. Before him stood all the members of her new family; Tabitha, Rachel, Katya… Frank…
>>
And then they started to die.

The Colonel kept his promise. As soon as the bloodbath began, her vision went dark and all she was left with was the crunching of bones, the pulping of flesh, the splashing of blood, creating the macabre orchestra of savage, violent, brutal death.

“Stop it!” Anya pleaded, straining herself to be heard over the carnage. “Please. This is just…”

“I will not stop, Anya, until you learn that *this* is the price of treachery,” the Colonel whispered into her ear as her vision returned. Mercifully the field was devoid of whatever horror the nightmare had conjured. “You will cause this, but you can stop it if you just. Let. Me. Back. In.”

For the longest moment, Anya considered it. It would be just like old times, a bitter, cynical little voice mused in the back of her mind. Maybe if she relented, her sisters would be spared the worst of the punishment. Why not? If it would spare the others this carnage…

Only then, another thought cropped up, unbidden. She recognised it as a memory–Berlin, to be specific–shortly after she was shot down. She had been visited by her sisters and Katya. When their guard had been dropped, she had lashed out, dropping Katya before taking her sisters and dragging them all the way through the city in order to find some sort of escape before the Butcher had descended. Stasya and Lilya–her sisters, whom she cared about as much as if they were her own flesh and blood–ran to him, and when she had railed against him, Stasya–timid young Stasya–had *shouted* at her to stop.

It had been, by far, the biggest shock she had ever received in her life.
>>
What she hadn’t realised at the time, though, was that her sisters had bonded with him. *Truly* bonded. They had been given a chance, an opportunity, for a better life and had taken it. Anya, damaged as she had been at that time, could scarcely have conceived it. Stasya was her family, and family was to be protected by any means. But her sister defended the man she had been tasked to kill, the man so many Russian steelwings feared and loathed in equal measure. The man they called ‘The Butcher’.

Her sisters had come to love such a man as if he were their own father.

And, in time, so had she. He had taken the headaches away, treated her to all manner of delightful foods, and given her space and time to process her tumultuous, rapidly changing thoughts and feelings. He was nothing at all like the rumours the GRU and Spetsnaz operators suggested. He was courteous, funny at times, and kind.

And, like her younger siblings, he had given her an opportunity for something better–something beyond death for a country that didn’t care, for a man who saw her, and raised her, as a tool.

After all that had been done for her, was this new life that Frank and the others had given her really so cheap?

“No,” Anya whispered, answering her own question.

The Colonel made a confused grunt. She was taken by the throat and hoisted up, once more level with Volgin’s face. This time though, his expression was clouded. Uncertain even.

“No…” she breathed, fixing the Colonel with all the hate and defiance she could muster. She heard a muted *pop* as her familiar manifested, and with it came strength.

The apparition with the Colonel’s head paused and, for the briefest instant, shock registered across its face before he began to squeeze, to crush the life out of the teenaged girl.

It was that sight–that momentary lack of control the unflappable, unstoppable Colonel displayed–that spurred the young girl onwards.
>>
“No.” She repeated, this time with more strength. With one arm, she reached up and took hold of the hand that sought to crush the life from her. The Colonel hissed and recoiled and Anya felt a surge rush through her.

“No. No. No. No, no, no. No!” she chanted, raising her voice an octave with each repeated until eventually she was screaming full volume, her voice booming. The cloudy monster with the Colonel’s face fell back, each bellow of defiance slamming into it like a rain of blows.

“*NO!*” she roared. All the years of repressed memories bubbling up to the surface and exploding like a tidal wave; all the pain, the torment, the anguish, all of it at the behest of this… *thing* before her. She had let her fear of this man rule her for far too long.

No longer.

“*No more!*” she screamed. The Colonel was picked up off his feet and thrown back like he had been yanked with a wire, tumbling head over heels backwards until finally coming to a stop, its face bloodied and bruised. Anya approached it, feeling more powerful than she ever had in her entire life. She came to a stop before the fallen creature and reached down, lifting it up so its face was level with her own. For the first time, she saw fear in the Colonel’s eyes.

She liked it more than she would ever admit.

“My name,” she seethed through clenched teeth, “is Anya Bishop. This is *my* mind and I have let you reign over my fears–let you torment me and my sisters–long enough.”

The Colonel shrank back, tried to shake himself free from her grip, but Anya was determined and kept him held in place. Foiled, the demon tried a different trick.
>>
“You’ll never really be one of them Anya,” it whispered with a sneer. “You’ve done far, far too much harm.”

Anya took a breath.

“Maybe you’re right,” she acknowledged with a sad nod. “I’ve done unspeakable things in your name–in the name of a country I believed was my home. There’s so much that I don’t even know if a whole lifetime would be able to make up for it all.”

She took a breath, steadying herself, and as she was about to speak, realised that there were tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. Anya was surprised to discover, though, that these were not tears of grief, or sorrow.

They were tears of hope.

“But… as these Americans are so fond of saying,” she told the Colonel with a smile, a real, genuine smile, “that doesn’t mean I can’t try.”

There was a moment of silence between the two before, finally, the Colonel donned a solemn expression and nodded, as if in understanding. Then it dissipated, like smoke on the wind, leaving Anya standing alone in the dark field.

As the last wisps of the thing that had been the Colonel vanished, she realised that throughout the whole encounter, she was being observed. Turning her head, she found two shadowy figures–a man and a woman–standing away from her. The man had one arm wrapped around the woman’s shoulders. Their body language was familiar and intimate, and Anya knew immediately that these must be her parents.
There was a stab of pain, followed by a muted sense of longing.
>>
“I’m sorry,” she told them, after a pregnant pause, “but I can’t go back with you.”

She had dug up much, but her former identity–as well as that of her family–remained shrouded, buried somewhere in the depths of her mind. Maybe someday it would come back to her, maybe not. In the end though, it didn’t really matter. She was not the little girl who had once lived happily with these people before her, nor was she the deceptively fragile tool Volgin had crudely beaten into shape over months of psychological and physical torture.

Nor, she mused, was she the same young woman who had warily accepted Frank's new role in her life all that time ago.

Suddenly a light flared into existence a short distance away from the trio and Anya raised a hand to shield her eyes from the glare. She felt her body pull towards it instinctively, and felt a tingle in her eyes she usually equated with waking up. She turned back to the silhouettes.

“I’m sorry,” she repeated. “I hope you’re safe, and that you’re happy… but I have another family waiting for me now.”

She gave them a soft, timid wave of her hand and gave them a brave smile.

“Goodbye,” she said with a sniffle. Then she turned, took a deep breath, and began to walk towards the light.

As she stepped towards it, and felt the tug of consciousness peel her dreamscape away, she wondered briefly if her parents would be proud of who she was now. She hoped so. The thought lifted her spirits, and she smiled warmly as she contemplated her life. It had been dark, and while her future now was a great big question compared to the bleak, grey certainty of her life in Soviet Russia, she found the knowledge did not frighten her. She had her sisters, Katya, her other two adoptive mothers, and her papa.

And that–she reasoned–was more than enough for the time being.
>>
***
“Anya,” a voice cooed softly, “are you really going to be one of those kids who sleeps in on their own birthday?”

Anya stirred, rolling over in her bed towards the source of the sound. Slowly, groggily, she opened an eye.

Standing over her was Katya, her hair falling just above her waistline, a tender, maternal smile on her soft features. Next to her were Stasya and Lilya, appearing to the unfamiliar as expressionless as they ever seemed. Even through her fatigue, however, Anya could detect a glimmer of excitement in their eyes, and she noticed that both of her adoptive sisters had their hands behind their backs as if to conceal something from her sight. Rachel and Tabitha stood behind the trio, their own expressions warm and welcoming.

At the front stood the man to which Anya owed almost everything, with a wry grin on his face, one arm around Katya’s waist, the other resting gently on her bedpost.

Frank Bishop.

Anya felt her lips curl into a tired, but wide and contented smile.

“Morning Papa.”
