As Ermac and Skarlet prepare to attack, Kung Lao teleports away with a flash of blue light, popping up behind the soul construct and kicking him in the back. This allows Kaito to blast Ermac with lightning, sending him flying back into a statue.

Skarlet, however, falls onto the ground, splattering into a pool of blood that soaks into the ground, appears behind Kaito and allows her to leap up and stab him in the shoulder. Kaito shouts and rolls forward, turning around to blast her with a bolt of lightning, but the bloody assassin is already gone, vanished once more.

Kaito teleports nearby to the top of a lamp post and surveys the area, waiting for her to show up again.

Nearby, Ermac and Kung Lao engage in kombat, battling each other down the street. Kaito looks past them and sees a tormentor approaching a movie theater with a group of screaming people fleeing inside from it. The rancor beast begins to claw at the entrance.

Kaito teleports down the street, past the shaolin and the many-souled Ermac, behind the Tormentor. He blasts its back with lightning and it roars, turning around to face him.

"Great," he says as the beast swipes at him, an attack that cuts into the concrete he was standing on before dodging, "now what?"

Suddenly, someone appears on the roof of the theater behind the tormentor. Kaito cannot get a good look at his face, but he is wearing a white karate outfit. He shouts and leaps onto the Tormentor's back and gtabs the monster's horns.

Kaito tries to get a look at his face but suddenly Skarlet reappears and leaps at him from behind. Kaito turns and kicks her before she can stab him, knocking her backwards. She flips back and lands on her feet, drawing both knives.

In the background, Ermac telekinetically throws Kung Lao into a store.

Kaito grits his teeth and pulls it out, tossing it aside. Skarlet then rushes at him, propelling herself forward on a trail of blood, preparing to stab him again.

Behind him, the tormentor tries to tear at the man on its head, crashing into a nearby building. Skarlet is forced to flee backwards as a bit of debris falls between her and Kaito.

Nearby, the karate-gi-wearing man continues to punch the head of the tormentor.

Kaito leaps over the debris and charges at her, attacking her with rapid punches and kicks. The skillful assassin blocks each attack as she cartwheels back over to her knife, picking it back up. As she does, Kaito teleports behind her.

Kaito charges a fistful of lightning energy and charges her, using his power to enhance his speed. He smashes her in the face and sends her flying into a nearby store window; she crashes through the glass and does not get back up, knocked unconscious.

Suddenly, the man who had leapt atop the tormentor jumps in front of Kaito and prepares to attack him. Kaito prepares to defend himself as the man shouts a warcry, but as both finally get a good look at each other, they suddenly stop.

"...Kaito?"

"...Kenshi?"

Kaito can hardly believe it. When he was a young boy growing up in Japan, before his father swept him up on his globe-travelling adventures, Kaito would often play and fight with a local boy, Takahashi Kenshi. And now that same boy stands across from him,

"Kenshi, I don't believe it," he says as they clasp hands.

"As I live and breathe; Akayama Kaito. The hell is going on? Monsters, and you're shooting lightning?"

"It's a long story, trust me. The short of it: Earth is under attack from monsters from another dimension and their emperor wants to conquer our world. Also, I shoot lightning."

Kenshi smirks. "Alright, well, it's not like anything else today has made any sense."

Nearby, Skarlet picks herself up and climbs out of the window. "So what's her story?" he asks.

"She's made out of the blood of a thousand warriors and serves the Emperor. She's also a pretty fun drunk."

"The hell have you been up to lately, anyway?" Kenshi asks.

"Too much," Kaito responds.

Kenshi charges at Skarlet. In their youth, Kaito remembers that he and Kenshi were quite alike; rather headstrong, somewhat reckless and always willing to prove they are the best. Still, he has no idea what kind of powers Skarlet possesses.

"Kenshi, wait!"

The martial artist ignores him and attacks Skarlet, who blocks each of his attacks. She takes a kick to the stomach and falls back, turning into a puddle of blood.

"What the hell...?"

She reforms behind him and prepares to stab him in the back. Kaito blasts her with lightning and stops her.

Nearby, Kung Lao tackles Ermac out of the air and brings the fight a bit closer. The telekinetic warrior pushes Kung Lao off, who then throws his hat at him. Ermac catches the hat mid-air and throws it aside before launching a ball of green energy at him, which he blocks.

Kaito focuses on Skarlet, and punches her several times in the face. Kenshi works with him and together they manage to force her to retreat. She falls back onto the ground and becomes blood, retreating by draining into a nearby sewer.

Kenshi watches it happen with bewildered eyes.

Kaito turns around and sees Kung Lao managing to defeat Ermac. The red ninja blasts the shaolin away and then telekinetically flies off.

Kenshi and Kung Lao shake hands as Kaito takes out the emblem Raiden gave him and focuses on calling Raiden. A tiny magical hologram of the thunder god appears.

"Raiden. We've secured the warrior."

"You came to get me?" Kenshi asks.

"Well, I didn't know it was you at the time," Kaito tells him.

"Very well," Raiden says. "I am preparing to meet with the Elder Gods over this invasion. It may take some time while I speak with them. Do you require immediate evacuation?"

Kaito turns to the others. "I've been out of Earth for a while now. I'd really like to go check on my mom, but if either of you want to leave to head back with Raiden, I understand."

"Question," Kenshi says. "Raiden as in the actual god of thunder and lightning?"

"Yeah, him," Kaito nods. "He's somewhat responsible for my electricity powers."

Kenshi smiles and shakes his head. "I'll be damned," he says. "Gods, monsters, portals... Things got a whole lot more interesting!"

"Do not underestimate our current situation," Kung Lao tells the Japanese street fighter. "Kaito, I would stay with you to ensure that you are safe. We need as many allies as we can get."

"Does she still live outside the city?" Kenshi asks.

"She should. I'm going to head to my old home," he tells them as he approaches a car. "With any luck, she hasn't moved. I haven't seen her in... a while."

Kenshi calls shotgun. Kung Lao gets in the backseat, taking off his hat. "Nice hat, by the way," Kenshi compliments him.

As Kaito starts up the car and drives off, he talks to Kenshi. "So, what have you been up to all these years, old buddy?"

"Wandering and fighting," Kenshi replies. "Looking for a good fight--seems like I've found one, alright. How about you?"

"Fighting four-armed monsters and sorcerers," he jokes. "Stuff you'd have to see to believe."

"I've seen nearly enough to last a lifetime today alone," Kenshi says.

Kaito turns to take a bridge out of the city. Once outside, they look back and see the Japanese military moving in; tanks and helicopters. "Looks like they're starting to mobilize and fight back," Kung Lao notes.

They approach a small town where the military is actively evacuating the populace. Kaito drives in and gets out, heading up to his old home. He knocks on the door.

"Mom? Mom! Open up! It's me, Kaito!" There is no response, however.

"Is she safe?" Kaito asks. "Are you sure she made it out?"

"I saw her leaving myself, but I don't know where she is now. They say that they're putting people in shelters and protected enclosures."

The neighbor moves on as Kenshi and Lao look at Kaito. "Do you wish to stay and find her?" Kenshi asks. "Maybe she'll be safer with the military..."

Kaito catches up to his neighbor and asks her to watch for his mother and to tell her that he is alive and well and aiding the military against the invasion. The neighbor agrees and Kaito returns to the others, where he calls Raiden.

Raiden teleports them back to the Sky Temple, where other heroes have gathered. As they are brought here with Raiden's lightning, they open their eyes and see Johnny Cage with Sonya Blade and Jax, and Liu Kang with Nightwolf, whom Kaito hasn't seen since the first tournament. Kitana, Rain and Tanya are here as well, along with Sub-Zero, Smoke and several Lin Kuei warriors in addition to Sareena. Kaito greets them all and introduces Kenshi to them.

As Liu Kang and Kitana speak to each other about the invasion, Kenshi leans over and whispers in Kaito's ear, "Hey, what's with the chicks in the blue and yellow bikinis?"

"I think that's just the traditional battle garb of their culture," Kaito replies.

"That's a culture I can get behind, if you know what I'm saying," Kenshi snickers as he and Kaito fist-bump.

Sonya approaches Kaito. "Kaito, good to see that you're still alive. Kitana tells me you have some kind of inter-dimensional boat; Shang Tsung's old leaky ship?"

"That's the one," Kaito nods.

"We may need it to transport soldiers to Outworld," Sonya tells him. "With your consent, I'd like to start preparing a squad of Special Forces for an excursion into Outworld with your ship."

Kaito nods at her. "Alright, but only if I get to go along on this mission. I have someone in Outworld I need to rescue."

"It's not exactly a rescue mission," Sonya says. "But you're more than welcome to come along."

"What kind of mission is it?" he asks.

"Hey guys, check this out!" Johnny says, holding out his phone. Apparently he gets better reception on top of the Sky Temple. Everyone gathers around as Johnny pulls up live news footage from New York.

The forces of Outworld are invading the city, but they are not alone or unarmed. They carry modern weaponry and explosives, and their forces are augmented by mercenaries.

"I knew it," Sonya says. "The Black Dragon are supplying weapons to Shao Kahn's army." She looks at Kaito. "That's what this mission is about: we are headed into Outworld to find the Black Dragon hideout and take them out."

Kaito remembers when he saw Kano trading weapons to Shang Tsung in the Living Forest during the second tournament.

"We've got people in New York, don't we?" Johnny asks.

"Raiden said there are heroes there, yes," Kitana nods.

The wind around them all suddenly picks up as a figure with white hair descends. "Perhaps I may be of assistance. I am Fujin, god of wind."

Kitana bows before him. "It is good to see you again after so long, Fujin."

He smiles and nods at her. "Rise, Kitana. There is no need for formality in a time of war."

"Can you transport us to New York?" Jax asks.

"Indeed I can," Fujin nods. "The battle there is fierce, far more destructive than any other. Earthrealm's military are fighting against them but I do not know how well they will fare against the magic wielded by the Shadow Priests and Shao Kahn's greatest warriors."

From within the Sky Temple emerges Sheeva, Asgaarth, Jagara, Khameleon and Kotal. Sheeva walks up and says, "Shao Kahn does not know much of your world, but his portal magic allows him to send soldiers to concentrated populations. This is why all of your greatest cities are being attacked first."

"So we get to New York and find our allies before they get caught up in the crossfire and die," Jax says.

"I'll prepare the Special Forces for the mission to Outworld," Sonya tells the major. "You can lead the mission to New York."

Sareena looks at Kaito. "The boat is moored at the base of the Sky Temple. We can also take it to New York, in case we need another plan of escape."

"That's fine, as long as the boat isn't destroyed before we can use it to get to Outworld," Sonya says.

Sub-Zero and the Lin Kuei gather. "We will travel to New York as well. The city won't last long under a full assault from Outworld."

"I sense great danger ahead," Nightwolf says. "We must be cautious."

And to be honest, MK:D's Konquest plays pretty fast and loose with the timeline of events. I always liked to think that Kenshi was blinded sometime between MK1 and MK:DA, so in this quest, since Shang was killed, he didn't yet trick him into opening the ancient tomb of his ancestors, thus blinding him.

Playing loose with the canon myself, but I'd like to make more of a contrast between Kenshi before and after his blinding (assuming he ends up blind; Jax still hasn't lost his arms either).

As the group begins its battle plans, Kaito and Sonya stand off to the side. "Alright," she says, putting her radio away. "I've made contact with Special Forces. If that ship of yours works, we can take it directly to the base in South Dakota."

"Sounds good," Kaito says. "I'd like to bring some friends along for my rescue mission."

"Who did you have in mind?" she asks.

"Kenshi. He's new to all of this, and he and I go a long way back. I'll need Khameleon, too--she knows the lay of the land in Outworld better than I do."

"Alright."

"And I'd like to bring Johnny, too," Kaito says.

Sonya cocks an eyebrow. "Really?"

"He's a good fighter," Kaito says. "All of his movies are real, you know."

"And his mouth is bigger than this temple," she rolls her eyes.

"He's not ALL that bad," Kaito says.

"He'll be your problem once we're in Outworld," she says. "I can't have some handsome movie star trying to hit on me all the time."

"You just called him handsome," Kaito points out.

Sonya turns away and clears her throat. "Well. I meant he's charismatic. He has to be. He's a movie star. Nothing more."

She walks off and Kaito snickers. He walks over to Kenshi and gets his attention. "So, ready for another adventure?"

The cocky fighter smiles. "Always. Where are we going? New York?"

"No. We've got a different objective. We're heading into Outworld--the place these invaders are coming from--and sneaking into their castle."

"To take on this Emperor, right?"

"To rescue a friend of mine. She's important."

"Oh," Kenshi says with a wink. "I got you."

"No, no--she's a sphinx."

"Kaito, you dog you," Kenshi jokes, "always with your eyes on foreign women."

"You're one to talk, you used to date a chick from Tailand," he points out.

Kenshi shrugs. "What can I say? I have a weakness."

"Alright, well just be ready," Kaito says, patting him on the back. He looks around for Johnny and Khameleon, and finds them both talking to each other, curiously enough.

Before Khameleon can respond, Kaito cuts in. "Good news! Johnny, Khameleon, we're going back to Outworld to rescue Turana and maybe stick it to the Black Dragon."

"I thought I was going to New York," Johnny says. "Think about the press coverage! I can see it now... 'Movie Star Saves Big Apple'..."

"Well, it's a chance to spend more time with Sonya," Kaito says.

Khameleon nods her understanding and loses herself in the crowd of other Defenders.

As Kaito prepares himself, Sheeva approaches him. "Kaito. I would have words with you, if you please."

"Sure thing," he says, following her to one of the rooms in the Sky Temple's upper levels. Once inside, she shuts the door and Kaito turns to see Jagara, who fixes him with a stern look. "Uh..."

"It is alright, Kaito," Sheeva says. "Jagara wishes to speak to you in private." She opens the doors and leaves.

"So... What's up?" he says, avoiding her gaze.

"I wish to speak about my father."

Annnnd there it is.

"Look, Jagara, I'm sorry, but--"

She holds up a three-fingered hand. "No. Please, do not apologize. It came as quite a shock to me, but I have been thinking it over since learning his fate, and I have decided not to be angry with you. While I loved my father, I do not love what he became. It is tragic that he was my enemy in this, but I made my choices; I choose to stand with a free shokan people, not be shackled as Shao Kahn's attack dogs. So I thank you, Kaito, for ridding our enemy of a powerful warrior and ridding my family of someone who forgot what shokan honor truly meant."

"Those loyal to my father will do all they can to prove themselves to Shao Kahn. But I know we have planted the seeds of doubt in our people's minds, and change cannot be far off.

"I hope change comes to your people," he tells her. "It would be good for all the realms to have them as allies."

"You are a great warrior, Kaito. I know that with your help, the shokan have grown one step closer to our freedom." She steps forward and takes his hand, placing a light kiss on the back of it. "Thank you."

She approaches the door and leaves, allowing Sheeva to enter. "The others are preparing to leave," she says. "Are you coming?"

"Yeah..." he nods. "By the way, I met your parents. I see you got your good looks from your mother."

Sheeva is actually rather taken aback by the compliment. "Thank you..." she says. "I also have not thanked you properly for breaking the mind control that was placed upon me... So, thank you gain. That vile sorcerer's spine will snap in my hands..."

Kaito smirks. "And you got your grumpiness from your father."

She scowls, but it fades quickly as she realizes his jest and slaps him on the shoulder. Kaito winces slightly; that's his bad arm from his fight with Goro. Sheeva apologizes as they walk back outside.

Kaito looks over and sees Kitana planning the attack with Kotal, Liu Kang, Jax and Rain. He sees Sonya, Kenshi, Johnny and Khameleon nearby and joins them as they make the descent down the many steps of the temple.

As they do, Kaito feels a strange sensation. He looks over and sees a large cave that the temple seemingly sits upon, almost like the temple was built around it. He looks inwards and sees a glowing blue light. "What is that...?" he says.

"The Jinsei," a voice surprises him. He turns to look up the stairs to see Asgaarth. "The Sky Temple is here to protect it. The Jinsei is the lifeblood of a realm--its true essence concentrated in a single location. Within, the very heart and soul of your world is kept."

"Amazing..." Kaito breathes. "Can we go inside?"

"It is best not to do so until Raiden returns," Asgaarth says. "As Protector of Earthrealm, it is his responsibility to guard it. He trusts all upon this temple, but one should never test the trust of a god." He steps forth and takes out a blue cloth. "Kaito, I have a gift for you."

"You don't need to," he says.

"No, I must," Asgaarth insists. "Kaito, I was going to die in that arena. Shao Kahn had me beaten and was going to execute me himself, I know. I was willing to die for my cause, but I feared not living to see a free Edenia once more. Though we have yet to split the realms, you have allowed me to remain amongst the living and continue hoping to see my dream become a reality. For this, I must give you something."

He hands him the cloth. Kaito takes it and unfolds it; it is a royal blue cape.

"I'm honored," Kaito says, looking over the fine craftsmanship.

"I have not told you what it does," Asgaarth says. "When you wear it, you will have the power of my people; the power of flight."

"Are you serious?" Kaito says, immediately putting it on. He focuses, and sure enough, a moment later he is capable of hovering above the ground. "This is AMAZING!"

"Use it well, my friend. I caution you against returning to Outworld, but I know you cannot simply leave your friends to suffer at enemy hands, and I thank you for it."

He wishes Kaito well before departing. Kenshi whistles as he looks at the cape and Johnny asks if he can borrow it for his next superhero movie, Mr. Impossible 3.

Kaito looks at the others and says, "Hang on, I'll meet you at the bottom." He then flies down the stairs to the Nethership, where he sees the orb in its cabin. He suddenly realizes he has a way to contact his mother and sits before it, placing a hand upon it. He focuses intently on his mother and his ethereal soul is taken across the lands of China and Japan until he finds her.

She is in an underground shelter, huddling amongst other civilians. Kaito appears before her, his heart warmed at the knowledge that his mother is alright. He mentally asks to speak to her, and though she does not quite understand, she allows him to do so.

"Mom," he says to her. She looks up at his ghostly form, surprised.

"K... Kaito... my boy... are you dead?"

"No, Mom. I'm talking to you through a magical orb. I know how that sounds, but trust me. I'm alive and I'm helping fight off this invasion."

"Oh, Kaito," she says, cupping her mouth. Others look at her like she is mad, as they cannot see you, but she doesn't care. "Kaito, my baby boy... What is going on? What is all of this?"

"They're invaders from another world. But don't worry, I'm fighting them and I have friends. Powerful friends; good friends. Together, we're going to defend the world."

"I... I don't understand," she shakes her head.

"I know, mom, it's a lot to take in. I was at the house earlier, you know, but you had already left."

"I'm sorry," she says. "I had no idea you were--"

"It's fine, Mom, I know," he says with a smile. "Just know that I'm safe and that I'm helping save the world."

"I... Okay," she says. "It's so good to see you, Kaito... even if it's like this..."

Kaito pauses. "There's something else you should know, Mom. Dad... He's gone. He was killed."

This news is wonderful for her to hear, despite the tragic nature of it. She reaches up at her son, but of course cannot feel him. "I wish you were here so I could truly see you..." she says.

"I know, Mom. Soon. I promise. I won't let this army take over our home." He feels a bit weak from the contact. "I have to go, Mom. I love you."

"I love you, Kaito," she smiles.

He waves to her one last time before leaving, his soul returning to his body again. Kaito smiles, feeling his heart warm at being able to have spoken to his mother again and know that she is safe.

The others have reached the ship.

Okay so my idea involved calling Duroc to see if he is in any position to help, then calling Rokuro, to get his ass to the Shokan Lands, because his father needs him. And not a word about Goro.

As for the Mileena, Turana idea;
I'm a little comfused now. When we use the orb calling someone, do people around them see us too? Now we weren't really seen when called our mom, but we were seen when called Sub-Zero. Knowing this is important if we want to call others on hostile territory.

As for calling Mileena; we absolutley need Khameleon tell us what she said to her and how. SPECIFICALLY. No vauge shit!

Kaito looks back at Sonya as she steps aboard the Nethership. "Are you ready?" she asks.

"Hang on, I've got to make at least two more phone calls," Kaito says. "Plus, I don't think we should take this orb with us, in case we lose the ship or something else goes wrong. Best to be safe, you know?"

"I agree," Sonya nods. "Alright, well, just remember that we're on a time table here, Kaito. We can't waste much more time."

"Understood." She leaves the cabin and Kaito turns back to the orb. He places his hand above it, not sure yet of who to call. He really wants to speak to Turana... but last he saw her, she was bound and gagged and leashed to Shao Kahn. Still, it might be worth a shot. There's also Mileena... assuming she wants to talk to him. But that's worth a shot too.

He places his hand on the orb and thinks about Turana, focusing as hard as he can. His soul drifts through the cosmos, across time and space, through dimensional barriers as he is brought once more to Outworld, where he is once more transported to Shao Kahn's fortress. He moves through the stone and metal, into the upper levels, and he finds himself in Shao Kahn's bedroom.

There, the Emperor himself is standing nearby on a balcony overlooking his city, watching his forces march to war through great portals. Kahn's slave, the one that Kitana made into her handmaiden, is on the bed, waiting for her master with a forlorn, saddened look. But Kaito's true attention is focused on the room's new addition: a large iron birdcage, in which sits his newest pet, Turana.

Turana still has the iron muzzle affixed to her face, and the shackles around her neck and forepaws. Upon seeing Kaito her eyes widen and light up, but she does not make any immediate noise.

"Turana, can you speak?" She shakes her head. "Alright. I'm sorry I couldn't rescue you, Turana, but don't lose hope. I promise that I will come back for you and free you. I did it once before and I'll do it again."

She looks at him and nods, a tear rolling down her cheek. He reaches out for her with a spectral hand, regretting that he cannot feel her and comfort her beyond words. "I shouldn't say how or when I'm coming back to Outworld... But I'm on my way, Turana. Just know that I won't rest until you're free."

She mouths something, but Kaito was never good at reading lips. She nods though, but her eyes are suddenly drawn to the balcony as Shao Kahn walks in, takes off his helmet and speaks. "I sense... a soul is near."

He looks around and his burning gaze stops upon the spot where Kaito is floating. "Don't be shy," he says, holding out a hand that begins to glow with green energy. Kaito suddenly remembers that Shang Tsung learnt most of his magic from Shao Kahn in the first place. "Step into the light..." the Emperor mutters sinisterly.

Kaito attempts to leave, but finds he cannot. His soul is being bound to this location, anchored, and if he cannot escape, it will be absorbed by Shao Kahn!

Kaito strains himself as Shao Kahn approaches, focusing intently on escape. The Emperor attempts to bind and absorb his soul, but he isn't about to let him. He screams as his soul breaks free from the Emperor's spell, sending lightning flaring throughout the Emperor's bedchamber. Everyone inside shields their eyes as Kaito's is torn from Outworld and hurled across the planes.

Asgaarth once warned him that if he could not keep focus, he would be forever lost. Kaito's soul drifts through realms, between realities, ending in a place where time and physical rules have no meaning. Around him are stars, strange constellations and colorful clouds of stellar matter. He is in a place infinite in size and deafening in its silence.

He is truly lost forever in the Void.

Until, however, he begins to see some kind of structure. A strange, geometric shape, not unlike a diamond in outer space, approaching him. His soul is drawn towards it by a force far beyond his control and he is brought within the prism-like structure.

There, he is met with a skeleton wearing a robe with gems for eyes.

"Hello," it says to him.

Kaito fixes the skeleton with a strange look. "This place... it's between the realms, isn't it?"

"It's outside the realms, around them, and it encompasses them," Chronosis says. "Not merely the realms, but all of time as well."

"So this place is beyond space and time?"

"Perhaps it is more correct to say that space and time are beyond this place," Chronosis says. "Here, such things merely do not matter."

"So, which way to Earthrealm?"

"Which one?"

"I'm sorry? I thought there was only one."

"There is never only one of anything, except for that which exists here. Which is why I was very surprised to find you here, so out of place from where you belong. I can put you back, if you like."

"Well, I'd very much like that, yes, but... if time doesn't matter here, will I wake up the same moment I left?"

"From your perception of time, yes."

"Then do you have time to answer a question or two?"

"I have no time at all; time does not exist here."

"Right, right. My bad."

"Paradoxes? You mean like time travel?"

"That is one. Other paradoxes include mirrored realities overlapping and beings from one reality, let's say your Earthrealm, finding themselves in a completely different Earthrealm as the result of time travel or something else. The reality the Elder Gods preside over has very specific rules, and they enforce those rules, but occasionally things go wrong. That's is why I am here. The Elder Gods and I both perceive time and dimensions in similar but distinctly different ways; they seek to create and balance what you call reality, and I seek to keep everything outside of their power balanced as well."

"And... who created you?"

Chronosis tilts its head. "The One Being."

"And who is that?"

"I cannot speak of the One Being in a way that you would understand. The One Being is above all, myself and the Elder Gods. The One Being is the ultimate creator, allowing for the creation of what you consider reality and what you would consider un-reality, if that makes sense."

"Not really," Kaito admits. "I can't wrap my head around everything you're saying."

"That's perfectly fine. Now, do you have any more questions? Or shall I send you back and fix the hole you made?"

"You mentioned alternate realities, right?" Kaito asks.

"Alternate realities, split timelines, mirrored realms, all of these are things I perceive, created by the Elder Gods and monitored by them and I."

"So... would I be able to see some of them?"

"I don't see why not. The mere act of observation is in itself primarily harmless; all it serves to do is give an individual, in this case yourself, a broader scope on their own reality by showing you what is, which occasionally is what can be, possibly. I myself have no bias in any way, shape or form."

"So, wait... Since I found myself lost here, does that mean that other versions of me could do the same?"

"Anything is possible. But here, time has no meaning. You and I are only having this conversation because I allow it. I exist simultaneously across the entire breadth of this Void--any and all who breach their reality and come to mine technically speak to me at the same time, but independent of each other. Otherwise it would be far too cluttered in here, and I like things quiet."

"I guess that makes sense, but I only have your word to go off of," Kaito says. "So... can I see some alternate realities or altered timelines?"

Chronosis holds up a hand and one of the walls of his prism-like home changes to reflect an image of a world that is not Kaito's, a reality that is not his own. The wayward soul turns his gaze upon the image and sees Shao Kahn taunting a defeated Raiden.

"What is this?" Kaito asks.

"This is a timeline in which Shao Kahn defeats all. He absorbs the power of Armageddon and goes on to destroy all that exists within his own reality. This version of Raiden sent a message to himself in the past, creating an alternate timeline to the primary which resulted in a new reality."

"What is Armageddon?" Kaito asks.

"The ultimate destruction of the realms that is a possibility for each reality. The Elder Gods prefer creation to destruction, and thus they implement safeguards against such a fate, but there are times when such things are unavoidable."

The image shifts and changes once more.

"Here, we see the one you know as Kitana, ruling over the restored Edenia."

"So it's possible?" Kaito asks.

"All is possible, as I have said. Here, she rules with a family; married to the one known as Rain, with whom she has three children."

"She marries Rain?"

"It is important for you to understand that this is not your reality nor is it your eventuality. As I said before, all I am giving you is a broader scope on your own reality by showing you what is, which occasionally is what can be, possibly. This means that what can be may or may not happen."

"Possible futures," Kaito understands.

"Sometimes. Every choice that every being makes is but a small link in the chain of events that causes all things to be or not to be. Perhaps your reality will be destroyed in Armageddon; perhaps you will find a way to live a life of peace."

"And... are there ways to visit these alternate realities?" Kaito asks.

"Such a breach is forbidden; it can cause unforeseen consequences for both realities. Unrestricted time travel can also do this, as multiple timelines become threatened and simultaneously created and intertwined. When such a thing happens, the balance the Elder Gods implement is put out of order and, if not set right, can create a disaster of cosmically cataclysmic proportions."

"Okay... I understand," Kaito says. "But I have another question: if you and the Elder Gods perceive time all at once, then do we have fate? Does destiny exist, or are we set upon a pre-determined path? Will anything I do matter, or is it all set in stone?"

"Every mortal being, across all of every reality, is not bound to any destiny but one that they make for themselves. Some have it chosen for them by others, some choose the fates of their fellow mortals, but always it is the mortals who choose their paths through life. The Elder Gods and not even I can interfere with what you call fate. Unless, of course, you break the rules and become a threat to the Elder Gods, in which case they destroy you, but that's the extent of their interference. Otherwise, they are content to maintain the balance of reality, and I am content to do the same with all that they do not create."

"Why is it like this?" Kaito asks. "What happens to a soul when its body dies? Do we reincarnate, or is there a heaven? Can souls transfer from one reality to another to be reborn?"

Chronosis laughs, though his mouth does not yet move. "I'm afraid that the order of things set forth by the One Being is far too complicated to explain to you all at once. And although I have enjoyed our chat, it is time for you to return and for me to patch the hole you left behind, before something escapes from it."

"Wait, what could escape?"

Chronosis holds up a skeletal hand and closes it. Kaito is flung out of the prism, hurled across the cosmic void and back into his own reality. The journey is instantaneous by the standards of his own reality, but for him takes much longer as his soul travels between realms, realities and what-ifs. He catches glimpses of things rushing by him in a great blur, some of them familiar and some utterly alien and bizarre. He finds himself falling through space and time into his own body, where he awakens with a terrible start.

He breathes heavily as he feels himself; physical form, flesh and blood, once again. He finds himself sweating a bit as he sits in the dark cabin, only lit by the glowing orb.

Suddenly the door opens and Kenshi walks in. "Hey," he says, then stops when he looks at Kaito's panting self. "Uh... you alright, pal?"

"Fine... fine, just..."

He tries to make sense of all he just learned.

"Strange..."

"Alright, well... We're ready out here whenever you are." Kenshi nods at him and leaves, closing the door behind him.

Kaito looks at the orb, amazed that such a simple thing can give him the kind of experience he just had. But he isn't sure he would want to repeat it.

Kaito is wary about using the orb after what just happens, and very nearly talks himself out of using it. Despite this, he focuses and puts aside his headache and places his hand back on the orb and thinks about Mileena.

His soul is taken out once more and brought across Outworld. There, he goes once more to Shao Kahn's fortress, only this time to a room that once belonged to Kitana.

There, Mileena is sitting in front of a mirror, wearing a blue outfit similar to Kitana's. Kaito materializes behind her and she turns, having already sensed that he desired to speak to her.

"You..." she says, looking at him with her veil down around her neck, her monstrous teeth exposed.

"Mileena. It's good to finally get a chance to talk to you," Kaito says with a smile. "We haven't had a chance since our kiss was interrupted."

Kaito looks her up and down. "I think you look better in purple," he says.

She blinks a few times. "I'm only wearing it to look like my sister," she admits. "Father says that I have to until the war is ended."

"Why are you helping him, then? If he won't even let you be yourself?"

She gets a fierce look in her eyes. "Because it's what I was made for."

"That might be true but that doesn't mean in any way that you have to let others determine what's best for you. The Emperor just wants you to look like her so he can mascaraed you around as Kitana and wield the respect she's built for herself. Don't you want to make your own choices?"

"When this war is ended, I'll be a princes..." she says, looking away.

"Mileena... I'm sorry for what happened. I would have kissed you, you know."

"But you didn't and you let her kiss you instead," she accuses.

"That's not fair. That wasn't even truly Jade."

"What?" Now he has her full attention.

"It was a saurian shapeshifter named Khameleon. She pretended to be Jade and stopped me from kissing you for reasons that are her own. What did she tell you?"

"She told me that Kitana had sent her to kill me. And then she released me and sent guards after me. I killed them all and escaped while she ran away."

"Those were lies," Kaito says to her. "Remember when I tried to use the orb after your escape but you wouldn't talk to me? It's because I didn't want you to go off and think I had betrayed your trust. I never meant to, Mileena. So that you wouldn't go off and make a mistake like helping Shao Kahn."

She is silent for a moment.
