Kaito, Sub-Zero and Rain run as fast as they are able into the Living Forest. All around them, the eyes of the trees seem to follow their movements and occasional roars can be heard in the distance; the grumbling of hungry trees. The thick canopy of leaves overhead prevents almost all light from reaching the forest floor, and as they run into a clearing, they discover little evidence of the saurian's path. Nearby, there is a large lake at the bottom of a cliff which a waterfall pours into.

"Where could that little lizard have run off to?" Rain says, looking around.

Sub-Zero scans the area. "I don't detect him. He may have found a hiding place. Sweep the area and stay alert."

Kaito warrilly begins to search; though he himself has defeated Reptile twice, he knows that anyone can get lucky with a surprise ambush. He looks around at Rain and Sub-Zero, who are attempting to use their abilities to find him; Sub-Zero by freezing parts of the land, and Rain by blasting sprays of water from his hands.

Kaito holds up his hands and focuses his energy on creating a field of electricity, wide enough to cover a decent area, that will shock any living creature in it. He widens his arms as the static cloud is formed and enlarges to encompass the area he is searching in.

As Kaito pushes the static field into a nearby cluster of trees and bushes, a sudden series of sparks followed by a high-pitched hiss can be heard. The green-clad ninja leaps from his hiding place, turning visible once more, before landing in front of Kaito and spitting acid into his face. The sudden attack is not enough to catch Kaito completely off-guard, for he dodges the acid spit by falling backwards, but Reptile runs forward and leaps over him, heading deeper into the forest but once more out in the open.

Nearby, Rain and Sub-Zero turn and see and take up the chase as well.

Kaito gets back up on his feet and runs after the three ninja warriors. Though he can see Rain and Sub-Zero, Reptile is just out of his view. When he catches back up to them, he sees them standing outside of a large cavemouth.

"He went inside," Sub-Zero tells the earthrealm lightning fighter as he runs up.

"Let's not waste time," Rain suggests as he leads the way inside.

The cave gives way to smooth, worked stone, dark and moist, which in turn widens until they reach a large central chamber.

A thick green mist hangs throughout the area, and the walls are lined with reptilian carvings and designs. A large green gem with a black iris features prominently on one of the walls, almost like this place is a temple worshipping snakes.

"This must be his home," Sub-Zero notes. "It certainly suits him."

"Spread out and find him," Rain says. "The sooner we return to Kitana with our prisoner, the better."

"Wait," Sub-Zero says, turning to create a wall of ice in front of the exit. "He cannot escape this way now, in case he slips by us."

"Won't it melt?" Kaito asks.

"My ice does not melt so easily," Sub-Zero replies.

Kaito proceeds into a nearby cavernous room, the walls and floor of which are lined with large, green, spotted eggs. Kaito leans down and inspects one of them, finding each to vary in size between football-sized and half as tall as himself.

The room is wide, and there are quite a few hiding places within.

Deciding not to disturb the eggs, Kaito turns around and comes face-to-face with a large iguana-like head.

He leaps back in surprise and holds up his hands in a combat stance. The lizard man doesn't seem to react at all; instead his long tongue emerges and licks one of his eyeballs, wetting it.

The figure turns his head and lets out a strange croak-like gurgle. His eyes move in different directions independent of one another, like a chameleon's.

Kaito observes as the strange, dopey-looking lizard man simply stands there. It can't be Reptile; can it? One of his kind? Perhaps an inbred cousin of some sort? He doesn't seem too bright... or aware of his surroundings.

"...Hi?" Kaito says to him.

He doesn't react, instead simply staring up at the ceiling for a moment.

"Do you know Reptile? I'm looking for him."

No response.

"Alright, good talk," Kaito says with a nod. "Catch you later." He attempts to move past the figure when it suddenly lashes out at him and punches him in the chest. Caught off-guard, Kaito steps back and puts his hands up again.

But once more, the lizardman doesn't make another move. It does, however, gurgle again.

"The hell was that for?" Kaito asks, moving close. He tries to move past him again, only for him to throw another punch. This time, Kaito blocks it. The lizardman punches again, and Kaito blocks each one. When the iguana-headed fighter throws a swift and surprising kick, Kaito is forced back a few steps.

And once more, the lizardman does not advance; he continues to merely block the way forward.

Kaito elects to simply teleport beyond the strange lizardman. With a flash and a zap, he bolts behind him and reforms and continues on.

Sparing a single look back at the lizardman and seeing that he has not turned around and continues to stare at the eggs, Kaito shrugs and continues walking.

Following the path deeper into the egg chamber, he finds what must be some kind of royal egg chamber. The eggs here are large, each the size of a man, and each held aloft by large, golden chalices.

The lower part of this ornate room features the massive head of a snake caved from stone, so lifelike that it looks as though it is alive.

Kaito approaches one of the large eggs. "Boy, this is a big one. I wonder what kind of omelet this bad boy would make? Could probably feed the entire neighborhood back home for weeks on one egg alone! Maybe I should cook one up right now..."

A sudden scream and a hiss from above is warning enough for Kaito to roll out of the way as Reptile attacks from the ceiling. The green ninja looks at him with yellow eyes and hisses once more. "You ssshall not touch them!"

Kaito holds up his hands and charges them with electricity. "You ready to do this dance again, Reptile? If memory serves, you didn't last too long last time."

"I am not alone..." he whispers.

Kaito and Reptile stalk around in a circle as they eye each other.

"So, I thought you were the last of your kind. What's with all of the eggs and the special needs lizard in the back room there?"

"My kind will yet be reborn... I have been promised this!" he shouts before leaping at Kaito.

The human manages to block two swift strikes from his snake-like fighting style; darting in and out like a snake lunging in with barred fangs. Kaito flips back, landing near one of the exits.

"What happens if I do this?" he asks, holding a hand up to an egg and preparing to jolt it.

"No!" Reptile shouts. "You must not!"

"Then we take this somewhere else," Kaito replies. "After all, it's not like you've got anywhere else to run."

Reptile's eyes narrow as he and Kaito slowly start to move into the hall, each seeing who will make the first move.

As they reach the next chamber, Kaito hears a growl from behind and he is suddenly attacked, his back clawed into by a thick reptilian hand. The human dives forward as Reptile leaps up onto a nearby balcony.

"Yesss! Yesss! Kill him, Claw! Kill him!" he shouts. "I will finish the others!"

Reptile runs and Kaito turns to see a deformed lizardman, different from the first, with a malformed face with uneven rotting teeth and arms with gross, distended yellowing bones jutting out of the elbows and knuckles. The lizard's tongue, itself a strangely swollen and bent muscle, twists underneath a pair of large, unblinking eyes.

The monster, Claw apparently by name, lets out a bellowing noise that turns into a hiss at the end before holding aloft his large claws and charging at him.

As the creature charges in, Kaito blasts him with a jolt of lightning, temporarily stopping it. He leaps up and punches it in the chest a few times, falling back into his training with the bloody hands style. He punches the creature's jaw, causing its misformed teeth to bit upwards and cut off its tongue.

It falls to the ground, followed by a stream of green blood.

"Damn!" Kaito says.

Claw steps back and shakes his head, and before Kaito's eyes, the tongue grows back, slightly more malformed than before.

It charges at him again with renewed rage and swipes at him. He attempts to trip Claw, but the monster tackles him to the ground. It looks Kaito in the eyes and its throat suddenly bloats up a bit. Kaito pushes him off and rolls away as he barfs up a slew of vile acid that melts part of the ground.

As Claw gets back up, Kaito narrows his eyes and charges up, grabbing hold of the monster's head and zapping it, supercharging the monster's head until it literally pops, sending green blood and brain matter everywhere.

Kaito drops the body to the ground and breathes easier.

He turns and walks away, but then he hears a noise. He turns around and sees the body stirring, and malformed yellow bone matter growing out of the neck stump and into a new skull, around which green musculature and flesh begins to form.

"You've got to be fucking kidding..." Kaito says as he watches the monster regenerate its own fucking head.

Kaito charges up and tries to blast the body, setting on fire and unleashing everything he's got into it. He grits his teeth and pours it all in, reducing the body to a blackened corpse.

He stops and takes a moment to breathe, panting heavily as he waits for the body to move. When it doesn't, he turns around and heads towards the main chamber.

Once inside, he finds Reptile battling Rain. The purple ninja dodges an attack by the green before launching a ball of water at him. Reptile, in turn, creates a green ball of force and launches it upwards, causing both to collide and nullify each other with a splash of green and clear liquid.

Nearby, a third reptilian man is clawing at the ice wall that Sub-Zero created, trying to dig its way through. It rakes its claws against it as it carves a small hole in its side.

The raptor-headed lizardman turns and looks at Kaito, hissing and running at him on all fours like a dog. Or, perhaps like a really fast crocodile, to be more appropriate.

Kaito throws a lightning bolt its way, but it leaps up with its powerful hind legs and tackles him to the ground. Kaito grabs its muzzle at it comes down and tries to bite his neck. He struggles with the raptor for a moment before Sub-Zero interferes and kicks him off. The Lin Kuei helps Kaito to his feet as Rain roundhouses Reptile across the room with a super-powerful kick.

The raptor scurries over to Reptile and helps him to his feet. From the egg chamber emerges the iguana-looking fellow, who slowly walks up behind Reptile and stands there, very still.

Kaito and Sub-Zero turn around when they hear a gurgling roar and see Claw there once more, regenerated into an even uglier form (if that were possible). Reptile hisses a command and the monstrous lizard abomination slinks its way behind them.

Reptile stands up and holds up a hand. "Now you will all die at the hands of the glorious sssaurian species, reborn!"

Kaito looks at the three of them, each malformed in their own way. It's strange to think that of the four of them, Reptile looks the most normal. "And, uh... their eggs were properly hatched, right?" Kaito asks.

"They are perfect!" Reptile says. Next to him, Iggy drools a bit. Reptile wipes it from his mouth. "Shao Kahn created them himself from the flesh pits! He will make many more when I help him take Earthrealm!"

Rain, Sub-Zero and Kaito look at each other. The human steps forward. "Look, Reptile... I get that you're desperate to hang out with others of your kind, but don't you have... standards? These things are freaks of nature!"

They all hiss (except the rather slow-witted Iggy) and Reptile shakes his head.

"Enough! Now we battle! GO! KILL THEM ALL!" he orders his three stooges into battle and they charge.

Kaito reflects on how adorable it is that Reptile wants to be mommy to three raptors before teleporting behind all of them and attacking him. He attempts to deliver a thunderous punch, but to his surprise, Reptile ducks, turns and kicks Kaito in the chest.

As Kaito falls back, the saurian grabs his foot and pulls him in, lifting him up and slamming him down alongside him. As Kaito gets up, Reptile pulls his mask down to reveal his scaled true face and spits green acid into the human's face.

The green liquid stings his eyes and causes him to fall backwards. Reptile ignores him and goes to fight with Sub-Zero and Rain, who are battling his three minions, content that Kaito is out of the fight.

Kaito reaches out and focuses on the water that is on the ground from Rain's earlier attacks. Using his new power, he collects it and uses it to wash his eyes clean of the green bile and sits up.

Sub-Zero and Rain are doing fairly well, but they are outnumbered. Kaito runs up behind them and the two groups square off with each other, staring each other down.

"I've got an idea," Kaito says, "let's do a combined attack! Ice, water, and lightning!"

Rain gives him an incredulous look. "As if I need your help," he says, charging in and turning into a puddle of water when one of them attacks. He reforms behind Claw and kicks him in the spine.

Kaito shakes his head and sighs. "Sub, that one regenerates. Put it on ice!"

Sub-Zero blasts Claw with a ray of cold, freezing him solid. Hound leaps onto the ice and tries to claw it to free his friend while Reptile leaps at Kaito with a flying dropkick to the human's legs.

Kaito fails to dodge Reptile's dropkick and is knocked to the ground. The saurian rolls over and punches Kaito in the chest before leaping atop him and getting on top of his chest. He rains punches down on Kaito's face.

"YOU WILL NOT SSSTOP ME!" he shouts. "MY RACE WILL BE REBORN!"

Sub-Zero kicks the saurian off of Kaito for the second time today and the human teleports up to his feet, managing to dodge a swipe from Hound.

As Reptile runs back up to Kaito, he punches him in the throat, sending the green ninja to the ground, holding his injured neck.

Nearby, Iggy gurgles and opens his mouth. A sticky pink tongue, longer than the length of Kaito's body, emerges and wraps around the human's foot, pulling him back down to the ground.

Rain appears behind Iggy and kicks him, causing the tongue to retract into his mouth.

Sub-Zero, Rain and Kaito all stand as Reptile is helped up by Iggy and Hound. Their yellows eyes narrow as they prepare to attack.

Kaito looks at Rain and says, "Need I remind you that Kitana told us to work together?"

Rain once more puts his pride first. "I tire of these games."

He raises a hand and blasts Hound with a bolt of lightning of his own, knocking the lizardman back.

Kaito and Sub-Zero put their palms together and blast, creating a mixture of lightning and ice that hits Iggy in the chest, simultaneously shocking and freezing him to the spot.

Reptile looks at his minions and realizes that his number may be up.

Rain points his hand at him. "Alright, let's finish him and be done with it."

Reptile holds up his hands. "Wait! I sssurrender! I submit myself to be Kitana's prisoner!"

The prince shakes his head. "She didn't say to take prisoners, and I grow sick from your fetid smell, lizard."

He prepares another bolt of lightning.

Kaito steps in front of Rain. "Are you kidding? We need to take him prisoner. He might know things. Besides, he's surrendering to Kitana's mercy, not yours."

"Kitana trusts me. I can make judgment in her name. I am a prince of Edenia."

Kaito slaps the ninja's hand away. "You might be royalty, but you aren't her husband and I don't recognize your authority in this situation. Kitana will decide Reptile's fate."

Rain confronts Kaito and stares him down. "Do you really think you have any right to tell me what I can and cannot do, you insufferable peasant?"

Sub-Zero blasts a wall of ice between you both. "Enough!" he shouts. "I advocate bringing Reptile to Kitana. She will be the one with the final word. Now enough bickering and let's move."

Rain looks at Kaito through the ice. "You carry him."

Rain heads towards the exit, still blocked by Sub-Zero's ice, and melts his way through with warmed water. Sub-Zero blasts Reptile's hands, trapping them in a ball of ice. The cold-blooded warrior shivers.

Kaito gets him up to his feet and walks towards the exit.

"What about them?" Sub-Zero asks, pointing at the minions.

Kaito sighs and looks at Reptile. "Will they follow you?"

He nods.

"Alright. Let Claw out of the freeze box, if you would, Kuai."

Sub-Zero walks up to the ice encasing Claw and smashes it, freeing the lizard. Reptile hisses at him, Iggy (who similarly defrosts) and Hound and they follow along behind him.

"They may try to free him at some point," Sub-Zero says.

"Maybe. But we'll be ready." Kaito walks along, keeping a firm hand on Reptile's shoulder.

"Wait," Reptile says. "My eggs... Let me leave one here. To protect my eggs."

Kaito cocks an eyebrow up and looks at the three of them.

Kaito points at Iggy. "He seems the most harmless. He can stay to guard the eggs."

Reptile hisses an order to Iggy, who blinks each eye once independent of the other and then turns to head back towards the egg chamber.

Sub-Zero walks behind the two mutant saurian as Kaito leads Reptile out of his lair. Once out in the Living Forest once more, the group of them head back in the direction they came from.

They come around a bend of trees to see Kitana and Rain talking to each other, with the purple prince holding her close with a hand around her waist.

"I captured Reptile for you," he says as Kaito brings him around the bend.

Kitana smiles. "You did well, my prince." She looks at Kaito. "Bring him here so that I may judge him, Kaito."

Kaito looks suspiciously at Kitana. "Princess?"

Rain gives Kaito a victorious look as Kitana holds his hand.

Kaito narrows his eyes. "What's the password, Princess?"

She blinks a few times. "What?"

Rain angrily throws up a hand. "She gave you an order! Why must you--"

You cut him off when you blast her with the lightning bolt. Kitana flies back and hits one of the living trees.

"TRAITOR!" Rain shouts, charging at Kaito.

"Guess again," the human replies, pointing at her.

Rain turns and sees the disguise of Kitana shift away as the female assassin who attempted to kill Kaito in the hot springs takes her place.

Reptile's eyes widen. "Kh... Khameleon?"

Kaito smirks. "Baby, you got one hell of a fine ass, trust me I know, but you don't have a very good head on your shoulders if you think I'd fall for that trick a second time."

The saurian assassin rises as Sub-Zero and the other two mutant raptors enter the clearing. "What's going on?" the cryomancer asks.

Reptile shouts to her. "Khameleon! Help me! We can overpower them together!"

She quickly takes out a kunai-like knife and throws it... at Reptile. The surprised lizard is struck in the heart and he falls backwards, into Kaito's arms. Hound and Claw hiss in anger.

Khameleon takes off into the forest, running away from the clearing. Hound and Claw both take off after her, breaking away from the party.

"WAIT!" Kaito shouts. "Damnit!"

Sub-Zero prepares to freeze them but they are already beyond the trees before he can catch up to them.

Rain's eyes remain wide. "What... Who was that?"

Kaito looks up at him. "She didn't kiss you, did she?"

He disgustingly shakes his head. "Of course not!"

"Damn. I was hoping for some good news," Kaito mutters as he helps Reptile to the ground, inspecting the wound. He gasps and looks up desperately.

As Kaito looks at Reptile, his human disguise begins to fade and is replaced by more reptilian-looking skin.

Kaito leans over Reptile and inspects the wound. It's quite fatal, but he is fighting to live.

"He's gone already," Rain says. "Let's report this to the real Kitana."

"One moment," Kaito says. "I need some water. I can heal him."

Rain scoffs. "What?"

"Just do it, prince," Sub-Zero says.

Rain holds out his hand and conjures a small sphere if water and drops it on Reptile's chest. Kaito uses his new powers to collect it in one hand as he pulls out the knife with the other.

He concentrates on serene thoughts as he washes the wound. Before their amazed eyes, the green flesh heals and the wound closes. After a few moments, Reptile breathes easier.

"...How?" Rain asks.

"We all have our gifts," Kaito says as Reptile awakens.

"You... You saved my life," Reptile says to him. "How can I repay this kindness?"

Kaito pauses and listens for the sounds of the mutant saurians. Amidst the wailing trees, he picks out the cries of hound. He rushes through the living forest to the source of the noise.

He comes upon a dark patch of the woods and looks around, but sees nothing. Then, he hears a noise from above and looks up to see both Hound and Claw hanging from vines, with stones as counter-balances. Khameleon caught them in a trap.

Hound bark-hisses at you and Claw roars as they futilely struggle against their bonds.

Kaito looks up at the two of them and points his arms out, sending two separate bolts of lightning at the vines that hold them aloft. They fall to the ground and quickly scramble out of their bonds, with Claw shredding his.

Both mutant saurians look at him warily. "I'm not your enemy right now," he says to them, slowly and with his hands up. "Khameleon hurt Reptile. Kha-Me-Le-On."

After a moment, Hound sits back and sniffs the air, but Claw still doesn't like Kaito. Probably due to him blowing up his head earlier.

Hound sniffs the air for the female saurian and runs off, with Claw lumbering after. Kaito follows them both straight back to Reptile's Lair.

"Why did she come here?" Kaito wonders aloud as they run inside. Once in the main chamber, Kaito sees Hound running towards the egg chamber. He follows them both in and finds a strange sight.

Khameleon is there, along with a beaten and bruised Iggy lying on the floor. She picks up one of the smaller eggs before smashing it on the ground, spreading green yoke across the stone.

"Ma'am, I believe that's abortion without consent of the mother," Kaito says, causing her to turn around. Hound and Claw both growl at her.

"You again..." she whispers.

"Miss me?"

She points her blades at Kaito. "And if you get in my way again, I will not hesitate to kill you."

She transforms before your eyes, taking the form of Mileena. She fixes a pretty stare from above her veil with her piercing orange eyes. "Perhaps this is more pleasing to you? I'm not one to judge..."

She pulls down her mask, revealing Mileena's monstrous maw. "How about a kiss, Kaito? Hahaha. I can hardly believe you were truly thinking of kissing this... thing."

Khameleon (in Mileena's guise) scowls and turns back into her normal self.

"Now, tell me what you did with Jade and Mileena," Kaito says.

"Nothing to either," Khameleon shrugs. "Shang Tsung did something with the real Jade when he learned who I truly was. I don't know where she is. Perhaps you should ask him... Oh, wait." She laughs, a low hissing sound. "And Mileena? I only let her out of the cage you put her in."

"You were Jade, with Kitana, planning to kill her. I stopped her from dying." Kaito buries his hands in his hair. "Look, why are we fighting right now? Are we not on the same side? Can't we just talk about this and you just tell me what you want instead of sneaking around and trying to kill me?"

Khameleon falters for a moment. "I don't trust you," she says.

"Well, we've been to first base, so there's something we could start off with," he jokes. She doesn't understand. He stands up straight and holds out his hand. "I'm Akayama Kaito and I would be pleased to make your acquaintance, Khameleon."

She looks at his hand, then up at his eyes.

At that moment, Hound and Claw both decide they've had enough waiting and spring at Khameleon, catching her slightly off-guard. The female saurian flips back, fighting the two savage lizardfolk off.

As Khameleon battles the two minions, Iggy gets up and joins the fight. Though she is an extremely capable assassin, caught flat-footed she is easily overwhelmed.

"I'll help you if you promise not to try to kill me again," Kaito says. "And if you promise to stop sneaking around without trusting anyone but yourself."

"Fine! Fine!" she says, kicking Claw aside. She flips back over to Kaito's side. She looks up at him with her green eyes. "But I will not work with Reptile or his abominations."

The three henchlizards begin to stir once more.

Kaito grabs her hand and runs out of the lair. Thinking quickly, he blasts the entrance and brings the stones down behind him. "There, how about that?" he says. "Now, even if they hatch, they'll need to be released, right?"

She folds her arms. "I suppose. But I still advocate Reptile's death."

"Jeez, you really hate him, don't you?"

"He is a coward who serves the man who killed our kind. He grovels for mercy. That, and I do not think he is a very good fighter."

"You and me both on that last one," Kaito admits. "I've beaten him twice."

Kaito pokes her shoulder. "What are you doing?" she asks.

"Just wondering if you're solid matter, what with the translucent-ness and all."

"That's just my natural camouflage," she says. "Perhaps you would prefer... this?"

Her leotard turns grey as her skin becomes solid-looking with a normal skin tone. Though she masks her face like the other female assassins, her face is more like a mixture of their features and is thus unique in its own way. Kaito looks her up and down.

"So... how do you plan to go about, ahem, repopulating your species?" he asks with a raised brow.

She places her hands on her hips. "Are you that eager to learn how I breed?"

"Well, I can't imagine it's too different," Kaito shrugs. "Will any male do?"

"Hardly," she says. "If any male would suffice, I would have picked Reptile long ago. No... I require someone more... powerful." She approaches him. "Someone who would make a worthy patriarch to a new race."

Kaito gulps. "Well... We should probably get to Kitana so we can explain your new allegiance... You are on our side now, aren't you?"

She walks past him into the woods. "So long as you help me, yes."

As he follows along behind her, his eyes drift down and Kaito can only imagine what kind of help she might need.

As they walk through the forest, Kaito still isn't fully sure what to make of her. He doesn't trust her yet fully; after all, she tried to give him the kiss of death. Kaito seems to be an honestly good natured guy thrown into shit where everyone tries to murder everyone. It's kind of refreshing actually, I don't think MK has anyone who doesn't have a raging murderboner constantly.

Kaito steps out into the open. Sub-Zero, Rain, Sareena, Jagara, Kotal, Tanya and Kitana are there, along with the captive Reptile, whose hands are bound in vines. "Kaito approaches," Kotal alerts the princess.

"It's good to see you are alive. Did you find that assassin?" Kitana asks. "Sub-Zero and Rain have told me all that transpired."

"I did more than find her," Kaito says, turning to allow Khameleon to enter. Some of the others draw weapons. "Woah, woah, none of that. She's on our side."

"Are you certain of that?" Kitana asks.

Kaito looks at her. "She's got no love for Shao Kahn, and in my world, we have a saying: the enemy of my enemy is my friend."

"Perhaps so..." she says, holding up a hand to order everyone down.

Khameleon looks at them all, but gives a long, unpleasant stare at Reptile.

Kitana turns back and walks to the others with the two of them following. "We need to go through with our plan," she tells him. "We will take Reptile with us. Kaito, if you trust Khameleon, she will accompany you on your mission with Rain, Sub-Zero and Sareena."

"Do we have any idea where our friends are being held?" Kaito asks.

"Likely in the dungeons, or in the cells of the arena, awaiting execution through combat," Kitana says. "You'll need to infiltrate the palace and go from there. We should also try to secure as many valuable items fro the fortress as possible."

"That orb that lets us talk to people across realms would be helpful," Kaito points out.

"What? Why?" Kitana asks as she storms over to get captive. "Why did he take her memory?"

"To eliminate an enemy and make her into a tool. I know no more than where ssshe was sent. The Cyan Desert."

"Is that far?" Kaito asks.

"Farther south than the falling cliffs," Kitana says. "Home to tribes of Amazon warriors."

Kaito's ears perk up. "Amazons? You don't say..."

"We need to plan our mission," the pragmatic Sub-Zero reminds them.

"Yes, of course. We will take our leave, then. Kaito, be careful. Save our allies if you can, but if you are unable, remember that we will need all the help we can in the coming battles."

"I understand, princess."

She is about to leave when Khameleon steps forward. "You are letting Reptile live?"

Kotal steps forth. "He is under my protection, as sanctioned by Kitana. I will ensure that he does not escape to warn our foes."

Khameleon is not pleased, but does not press the issue. Kotal, Tanya, Kitana and Jagara leave with their prisoner.

Kaito turns to the others. "So, we need a way into the fortress."

"Assuming we can even trust you," Rain says to the saurian. She narrows her eyes and Kaito holds up a hand.

"No, it's a good idea. She can shapeshift; we'd be fools not to take advantage of the fact. And she's against Shao Kahn, so she wouldn't turn us into his goons when we can help her get rid of him."

Sub-Zero nods. "I like this plan, but what if we run into the real Mileena?"

"Then we improvise," Kaito says. "We'll need some shackles and chains and stuff to make it look authentic."

"We can pick some up on the way into the city," Sareena suggests. "We can rig them so that they break once we are inside."

Rain folds his arms. "You honestly think that they're going to believe that she was able to capture all of us? I alone cannot be held by mere shackles. This idea falls apart the moment we run into anyone who knows what we are truly capable of."

"Well hopefully that doesn't happen until we get to the fortress," Kaito replies. "If we can get inside there, we split up and rescue our friends."

Khameleon changes into the form of Mileena, disguised as Kitana. "Shall we, then?"

She begins to walk north and the four other fall in behind her. Once out of the Living Forest, they see the moon beginning to rise in the purple sky.

"This is opportune," Sub-Zero says. "Perhaps most of our resistance will be asleep."

"Maybe," Kaito says. "I get the idea that Shao Kahn isn't the kind of guy to rest with conquest on the mind. But if he is, I know where he sleeps. I've been in his bed."

Some of them shoot odd looks at him as they walk.

They make brief camp outside of the marketplace. "I'll go in and get the chains and manacles from a blacksmith," Sareena says.

"How will you pay?" Kaito asks.

"Pay?" she replies playfully before running off into the market, hiding amongst the shadows.

As he watches her go, Kaito gets a bad feeling as he remembers the last time he was in the market. "Say, uh, Khameleon... You don't know any cowboys from Earthrealm, do you?"

"No," she replies.

"Damn." He remembers well the assassin, Erron Black, who tried to take his life. Who put out the contract on his head, he wonders?

Several minutes later, Sareena reappears and presents the chains. Sub-Zero works with her to rig them to break with a little resistance by freezing specific portions of them.

"Do you go in through the main gate of the fortress, or the arena entrance?" Rain asks. "The arena is closer to the dungeons, but the main entrance to the fortress may be a better place to free ourselves and split up."

"There's also a less-used entrance that I know of in the Dead Pool," Khameleon says. "There may be even fewer guards there."

They look to Kaito for the final word.

"Arena." Kaito nods at Khameleon, who takes hold of the chain connecting the manacles and leads you all down the streets.

Halfway to the arena, the screams of the crowds can be heard. "Sounds like things are back to normal, at least as far as that is concerned," Kaito mutters.

"Shao Kahn has always kept the people placid through gruesome displays in his arena," Rain says. "By the sounds of it, there must be quite the spectacle going on."

Near the entrance to the arena, they are stopped by two centaurs in armor. "Halt!" one of them calls.

"Out of my way!" Khameleon orders them. "I have prisoners for my father's arena!"

They look at the prisoners, and then each other. "But... Princess Mileena, we thought you were inside with your father."

'Shit,' Kaito thinks.

"Do you wish to fight in the arena yourselves? Perhaps against a tormentor, or a horde of taigores? You will move as I take them to the arena cells or I shall have my father execute you for impeding my path!"

They quickly shut up and move aside, lifting their axes. "Of course, your majesty," one says. Good improv.

She leads them inside and down a dark corridor. They find themselves in the arena cells, where numerous prisoners, criminals and others await being thrown into Shao Kahn's arena for his amusement. The roar of the crowd in the rows above them can be heard through the bars that look out into the arena. There are four guards here.

Kaito breaks his manacles and attacks; the others follow his lead. Within moments, the four guards are knocked out.

Kaito looks in all the cells, but all of them are either former guards who allied with Kitana or peasants. No sign of any of his allies.

Outside, they hear the crowd begin to chant, "FIN-ISH HIM! FIN-ISH HIM! FIN-ISH HIM!"

The five of them run up a nearby stone staircase and look out into the arena and find a grim sight. Kaito takes it all in quickly, and doesn't like a single thing that he sees.

At the heart of the arena, upon his stone skull throne, is Shao Kahn. At his side is the vile demon sorcerer, Quan Chi. Shao Kahn holds onto a chain that leads to the collar of his newest pet... Turana.

The sphinx wears the collar, which has two smaller chains leading to manacles around her forepaws. An iron gag has been affixed around her mouth to prevent her from speaking and her wings are bound. Some kind of enchantment on the neck manacle must prevent her from using magic, as it is glowing much like the gauntlets that Kaito was forced to wear in Kuatan.

Standing alongside the throne are various warriors of Outworld; Skarlet, Reiko and Prince Goro, along with a centaur that Kaito does not recognize. As well as Mileena, wearing the blue garb of Kitana. He can also see Noob Saibot, standing behind Quan Chi, along with three female assassins--two of whom used to be Sareena's partners when he first met her. Kaito scans the group, but does not see Tortek anywhere. The crowd of the arena is made up of centaurs, native outworlders, a few shokan and tarkatans, however.

Before them, however, is the most distressing sight. Sheeva is battling Asgaarth for Shao Kahn's amusement, but the shokan warrior is not holding back whatsoever. She is savagely beating the birdman to within an inch of his life.

"She must be under some kind of... mind control," Kaito reasons. "Sheeva wouldn't do this!"

He watches as she picks up Asgaarth and smashes two fists against him, causing him to spew blood out of his beak. Shao Kahn laughs as the edenian falls to the ground before him.

The crowd continues to chant, "FIN-ISH HIM!"

Shao Kahn holds up a hand and all go silent.

Sheeva collects Asgaarth in her upper arms and holds him up high, bowing her head and presenting him with her lower arms for judgment.

Kaito prepares to jump into the arena but Rain holds him back. "There are a dozen strong warriors down there, not to mention Shao Kahn," he says. "You cannot hope to save him."

"Fuck you," Kaito says. "I'm not going to stand here and let him die!"

"Kaito, I don't think we can take them," Sareena warns. "We'll be captured."

"Or killed," Khameleon agrees.

Kaito looks to Sub-Zero for support, but the Lin Kuei is silent. "We can't let him die!" Kaito says. "We need him to free Edenia!"

Rain shakes his head. "There are other ways. I won't follow you into that arena to get myself killed, but by all means, jump in."

"You fucking coward," Kaito says, but then stops when he hears Shao Kahn prepare to deliver the final judgment on Asgaarth.

Kaito closes his eyes and takes a deep breath.

He knows what he must do.

"Kitana put me in charge. I'm not ordering any of you to go down there. So, carry out the mission while I distract them."

They all look at him. "Don't be a fool, human," Rain warns him. "Your death will mean nothing."

Kaito ignores him. "Get the orb from the tower. Free as many prisoners as you can. Try and find therest of Asgaarth's birdfolk and free them, too. Khameleon, cause as much confusion as possible while disguised as Mileena. I'll handle the rest from in here and keep all the big folks busy. If I get out, I'll escape through the Dead Pools." Sub-Zero looks at him and nods, understanding Kaito's orders.

"Kaito, NO!" Sareena shouts, grabbing his hand. "I will NOT let you jump in there!"

The earthrealm lightning warrior grabs her wrist gently and turns to face her. "You're a good friend, Sareena. I'm not going to jump into the arena."

She softens and sighs. "Alright. Good. Let's just get what we came for and--"

"I'm going to teleport in."

And with that, Kaito vanishes in a flash of light and a thunderous crack. He materializes in front of Sheeva, taking all by surprise, and kicks her in the stomach. She drops Asgaarth to the ground and Kaito grabs him as he falls, setting him down gently.

"Hey, buddy," Kaito says to him. "I made it."

The eagle-headed edenian manages to open an eye and speaks, his voice coarse and weak. "K-Kaito... You... You should not have done this..."

"I'm not going to stand by and watch you die," Kaito tells him. "Not while I can fight."

A loud cracking noise behind him draws his attention. He realizes that it is the sound of Shao Kahn slamming his fist onto the stone of his throne's armrest. "And just who is this who interrupts my execution?"

Kaito stands and turns around, charging his body with electricity. "I am Akayama Kaito, of Earthrealm. And if you want to kill my friend, Shao Kahn, you're going to have to go through me."

The Emperor lets out a resounding laugh as the crowd cheers and roars. Behind him, Sheeva picks herself up. He looks over his shoulder at her and sees her eyes, a blazing red color.

"Such bravado is expected from this one," Quan Chi explains to Shao Kahn. "He is a talented warrior with a foolish heart."

Kaito looks down at Turana, who stares at him with pleading, worried eyes that speak of her fear for his life. He then looks at Mileena, who stares at him with shocked eyes.

Shao Kahn points at Kaito. "You are certainly daring to come here before me and challenge my power. I am Shao Kahn! Ruler of all of Outworld, conquerer of realms, and soon to be master of your realm of Earth! You are fortunate that you will be given a chance to fight and die here before me, unlike the countless of your kind who will fall to my roving hordes when we take the Earth for our own."

Kaito points back. "You cannot invade Earth! I was there at the end of the tournament, at your failed wedding, where you were soundly defeated! There can be no invasion when you cannot win in Mortal Kombat! Earthrealm is forbidden from you! The Elder Gods know this!"

Sheeva walks around Kaito as the human stands between her and Asgaarth. "Sheeva, don't do this," he tells her.

"SILENCE!" she says back. "I know you, Kaito. You are weak and your heart is weak. Perhaps I shall tear it out and show it to my Emperor."

Her red, mind-controlled eyes flare as she cracks all four sets of knuckles. "Ready to die?"

The crowd cheers as Shao Kahn shouts, "FIGHT!"
