>You are Vincent Esperanza. In a previous life you were a silver-tongued manipulator who conned corporate plutocrats out of their vast fortunes. When you were finally caught the American legal system sentenced you to 20 years behind bars. For two long years you lived on a knife's edge until your sentence was purchased by the Global Exterminators Corporation, aka GEC.

>After subjecting you to six months training, GEC sent you abroad to work in their understaffed Hong Kong branch HQ. In the libertarian free-for-all that is post-WW3 Hong Kong, you are tasked with exterminating the legions of mutant pests left behind by the untold thousands of chemical and biological munitions that were expended both here and on the mainland. Working for those who you once exploited is a bitter irony but you have no choice but to comply... at least until you can find a way to remove the bomb in your neck.

Previously on Exterminator Quest:

After waking up in a GEC lab with your wounds treated you interrogated a coworker and learned that you had been unconscious for a full day and that it was now Friday night. Pleased by this information, you limped off into the night to find a place to drink.

With the help of a tip that you recalled from training camp you managed to find The Patriot, a high-end establishment that caters to American ex-pats like yourself. There you flirted, drank, displayed surprising pool skills, and observed a suspicious transaction taking place at the bar. You followed one of the individuals involved to a seemingly abandoned meatpacking plant, noted the location, and then headed home.

The next day you realized you had forgotten your bank card and rushed out of your apartment to get it, despite overhearing some kind of escalating conflict taking place in your neighbors apartment. When you returned your neighbor was dead and you were briefly interrogated by the Scyths, aka the local corporate police.

Now, in an attempt to ease your mind you have decided to engage in some retail therapy and buy some much needed clothes.

You've been itching to go to Hong Kong Central ever since you arrived in the city so many months ago. This place is the epicenter of wealth and commerce in a city that is already replete with both. Skyscrapers house thousands upon thousands of investment bankers, stock traders, and CEOs, all with more money than sense. Even in your ridiculous American flag graphic tee and jeans, you feel yourself assuming a more professional posture. Once you get some proper clothes you might actually start to feel normal again...

You originally set your destination as Bloomingdales, a store with fairly high quality merchandise but little specialization. It's a good choice but hardly the only one in the area. You decide to make a mental list of what you need to help you choose where to go first.

>suit (jacket and pants)
>ties
>jacket (casual)
>pants (casual)
>dress shoes
>sneakers
>a good leather belt, ideally with an indulgently American buckle

A hat of some kind might be nice too...

Your choices of retail outlet are:

>Bloomingdales (good quality options but lacking in budget items)
>Empire Tailors (Top quality suits and the option to have your own tailored)
>Messenger Co. (Streetwear, mid-tier prices)
>Happy Hong Kong Shoes (Mid to low tier shoes)
>Golden Dragon Clothes (bargain-bin, mass-produced trash (but maybe you'll find a good cap))
>Fragrant Harbor Hats (specialty haberdasher)

You're craving the chance to buy a new suit and tie but it makes sense to take care of pragmatic needs first.

Messenger Co. is a mix of highly durable and subtle jackets and bags for use by local bike messengers and uncomfortably hip youth fashion. Graphics tees, the scourge of clothing since you were young, abound.

There are some very decent sneakers and caps though.

The windbreaker selection here seems to be limited entirely to 1980s style remakes, which were big right before the war..

Seeing how much money you've blown through today, you're really feeling the urge to go get your check.

You neatly pile your purchases in the back of your van, then plug the coordinates for GEC HQ.

The drive is only about a half hour long and it's still only 4pm.

You make your way up to the skeletally staffed offices and find Devlinson in his office, chomping away at an unlit cigar that sets off your own yearnings for tobacco...

"It's good to see you standing, Esperanza. I was getting worried that you'd have to be added to my long list of first week wipeouts."

You protest that it was only a broken bone.

"A broken bone and a body shot full of painkillers. Not to mention you reopened that wound in your shoulder. The docs assured me you were never in any real danger but it sure didn't look it..."

He shuffles through his desk for a minute.

"Here's your check. Don't worry about the debrief, we sent an inspector over to the house after you passed out. The higher-ups are curious about what prompted you to burn the place down wholesale but they really just wanted the claim to the real estate anyway."

>Received:
>Your first check!
>It's good for $400... and another $450 in bonuses!

>New total funds: $3008

You thank your boss profusely and he sends you on your way with an exhortation to be careful with yourself. Training new employees is very expensive after all.

Now where to?

>pay a visit to the labs, see if anyone is around for the weekend
>head out into the city, buy some food, maybe look into a gym membership, possibly a way to arm yourself
>see if silver pete is around
>go check out that meatpacking plant

You descend to the OR section of the labs, hoping to find someone who will let you into the specimen labs or that they've been left open again.

Unfortunately they haven't, but you do seem someone you recognize bent over one of the operating tables, dissecting something with gusto.

You'd recognize that booty anywhere as Clarissa's, the scientist who last got you close to Jeremy.

"Clarissa!"

She gives a start and jerks backwards to face you, obviously startled.

"Oh, it's you. What do you want?"

You crane your neck to see what she's working on. It's pretty well flayed at this point, but you take a guess.

"Well, I'd like to get in and see my "friend" if that's possible. I'm also curious if that's the cat I bought in."

"It is. We did some tests and found it had a brain parasite, so we euthanized her and removed the parasite from her brain to study it further. Fascinating thing by the way, had a huge brain to body mass ratio, especially for such a tiny insect."

Her eyes begin to drift and you realize it's going to be up to you to keep her on point.

"That's wonderful, I guess. But what about Jeremy?"

"Well, the good news is that they've put off his vivisection by another week to deal with all the fresh specks somebody bought in this week."

She winks at you.

"The bad news is that he's still pretty locked down and I don't have the clearance level to get to him...."

>How can we reach him if we don't have clearance?
>Did you guys learn anything about his condition?
>Tell me more about the parasite you found in the cat. It seemed to be communicating with its counterparts somehow.

But not consistently. It didn't seem to convey information to the cats when they were upstairs, but they knew something once they came downstairs...

>>41966047

"I thought I had convinced you to get clearance?"

"You did. It just wasn't approved. The good thing is, I have a plan."

Clarissa reaches into the pockets of her labcoat and retrieves a small vial.

"This is a byproduct of one of the fungi we keep in containment, which is itself the product of some old PRC research we managed to capture years ago. It makes a person extremely responsive to suggestion for about an hour and the best part is, when it wears off, their brain automatically restructures their memory as though it never happened."

She drops the vial into your hand.

"We still don't understand it, but it works every time."

"So what am I supposed to do with this?"

"One of my superiors with clearance, Dr. Wing Xi, takes her lunch at 3 pm sharp everyday. I take my lunch at 4, so I can't slip it to her but you can, if you can make it to the cafeteria at that time. Sound easy enough?"

>>41966179

"Yeah, sure. Does she work tomorrow?"

"No, I'm actually the only one in the lab right now... Don't get any ideas."

You do your best to act like you don't have any already.

"So, when does she come in?"

"Monday. So try and finish your job early and come in. I'll be ready for you down here and I'll make everything look routine."

"Sounds good. So, about the cat parasite. When I was trying to clean out that house, it seemed like the infected cats could communicate with one another both with and without sound. Did you guys, ah, figure out how they did that?"

"Well, obviously we couldn't observe any interactions between two infected specimens since we only had the one... but if I had to hypotesize, I'd say it's possible the parasite hijacks the cat's pheromones and uses them to coordinate a hive mind, just like how ants operate."

You suppose that makes more sense than telepathy.

"Lets stick with Clarissa for now" she says, looking at you bemusedly.

Welp, guess that's everything you wanted to do down here. You take the elevator back up to the garage floor so you can resume your weekend.

It's a simple matter to get your check verified and cashed at an ATM around the block.

You start by picking out a big bag of brown rice, then gradually adding onto it what you think you could tolerate alongside it.

You end up with a pretty fair collection of vegetables, fish, chicken, and some cans of beans and corn. It's not a whole lot, but it's healthy food and it'll feed you cheaply for the week.
