Your name is Takashi Wakui. You are a sixteen-year old, Japanese high school student living in a world where half of humanity possesses Personas—manifestations of inner souls as demons, spirits or deities. In the past, you had been one of the unlucky ordinaries lacking a Persona. Then a game called AETHER was forcibly installed on your smartphone. Initially it appeared to be little more than a piece of nasty spyware, extremely persistent and impossible to remove.

Then it sucked you into to a realm called the Blackened Void, where you fought Shadows and gained your first Persona--Ippon-Datara of the Fool Arcana, the degraded blacksmith demon god. Now you are the Wild Card of the 22nd Century, capable of wielding Personas of each Major Arcana. Turns out AETHER is more than a simple, reality-immersive game; it is an accursed phenomenon superimposing itself over an otherworldly realm, consisting of vicious monsters, decrepit ruins and glamorous treasures. And to make matters worse, you and several others have been condemned as its chosen Players.

For what purpose does the game exist, what mysteries lie within and how will you Players achieve victory?

You’re back. It’s obvious where you’ve returned. Where else would you go in your dreams? A few more lamps have been added to the room. It won’t be long before you can see their faces. Maybe then you’ll take the chance to have an actual conversation with the squatter, instead of gormlessly standing there and helplessly receiving their abuse.

The scent of cream cake gently wafts through the cold air. A plate is carefully rested on a cloth-covered table.

“Welcome back, kid.” The boy states, smirking. “You’ve hit a milestone in terms of your bonds. A miniscule milestone, comparable to an ant in the path of a steadily rolling boulder, but a milestone nonetheless.”

“Nii-san and I were surprised.” The girl follows up. “You’ve certainly been more prolific than your predecessors. Even the Last Word had only created four bonds during the first fortnight. So in that regard, you have surpassed them. Of course, you shouldn’t become too cocky, Weakest One. We bestowed that title upon you for a reason!”

“On that note, let’s examine your new bond. Normally we would refrain from summoning you here, but this Arcana is of particular interest to us.”

“I’ll do it, nii-san!” The girl heaves up the leather-bound Persona compendium and flips over the covers. “Here we are…Kozue Yusa, of the Death Arcana. A mysterious young girl who had a chance meeting with the Weakest One. Her eyes are as empty as the night sky.”

“We noticed, kid, that the majority of your astonishment arose from the establishment of a fresh bond, rather than the idea of Death itself.” The boy snorts a little. “Humanity has passed the point where a man’s fate is judged by the inscriptions carved upon one’s own soul. Now, they simply segregate children by whether or not they are capable of controlling magic and manifesting their inner selves as demons. In any case, are you aware of the symbolism behind the Death Arcana?”

“Let’s give him a recap, nii-san!” The girl chirps. “Our guest has been a shut-in for quite some time and has shunned the outside world.”

“Now now, my dear little sister, at least let us give him this paltry flake of credit. He isn’t that foolish. After all, magic and tarot interpretations have become an integral part of human society, along with violence, falsehood, power lust and arrogance the power of Personas have influenced. But now I feel we are sliding off topic. The Death Arcana is the thirteenth trump of the major tarot. Despite the name, the card is not primarily concerned with physical death; it also represents spiritual death, metamorphosis, regeneration, deep change and cycles.”

“Yep!” The girl continues. “Vegetation burns, mountains crumble, cities fall and the living perish. The skeleton on the horse tramples through a grim field of dead kings, bishops, knights and peasants. Death will come to everyone, no matter who they are. But in the background, the rising sun peers over the horizon, showing that a new day will always come and there will be life emerging from the deaths of others.”

“Reversed, the people rise from their graves and curse the earth. The positive aspect of the card is now seen as negative. As for how all of this relates to the girl named Kozue Yusa…that is a mystery you alone must discover.”

“One of your predecessors was heavily associated with Death, Weakest One.” The girl says. “His tale was a fascinating voyage of hope, sacrifice and redemption. Without wishing to spoil much, he gave up everything to ensure the survival of humanity. I’d say his action had the greatest significance amongst all your predecessors. Nii-san disagrees, as typical of him.”

“The Bifurcated Duo had a much more interesting story, which is of why I favor them.” The boy smiles. “It’s interesting to note that barely a soul is aware of the Great Seal’s contribution to the world. It may be better if humanity never understands the depth behind his sacrifice. You seem curious, kid. You hunger for the information of the Wild Card’s pasts. Is he really important to the trial you are facing, though?”

“Probably not, nii-san! That boy’s tale is long over; his task done. His legacy will forever exist, however unaware the masses remain.”

The boy glances over to the side. An ornate grandfather clock is standing against the wall, its pendulum gently swinging in a vacuum. “It appears our time is trickling to an end. Very well kid, let’s wrap this up. You will receive the Persona of the Death Arcana during our next visit. As for the other matter…”

He retrieves something out of his pocket and places on the table.

“Care to indulge your superiors in a little game?” The boy grins. He doesn’t even bother to wait for an answer. Not that you are capable of talking back. “Gifts, for you.”

“There are various…existences that have wronged us in the past. We will eventually resolve them, but we are giving you the chance to finish the job for us. You will be handsomely compensated, of course. The Hollow Deathstone will heat up and vibrate when the battle draws near. When you slay these existences, their souls will decompose. You may either devour the souls with the blank cards, or patiently wait until the decomposition has complete and a rare artifact appears. Either way, we would like to see the fruits of your labors…”

“I do wonder if the Weakest One is capable of achieving victory against the first contract, nii-san.” The girl wonders.

“Who knows, he just may surprise us.” The boy responds. “Now then, return to your world. You have your own matters to attend to, no?”

[8:00 am, 11-Apr-2129 (MONDAY)]

The sky is cloudy and gray today. There were reports of showers occurring outside the city walls. No doubt the Anti-Shadow Operatives would be hard at work there, cleaning up the Shadows undoubtedly gathered there like mushrooms springing up in a damp rainforest. It’s fine in the depths of Akumachi City, though. You dress yourself, replace the bandages from yesterday’s exploration and eat a breakfast of rice and pickled vegetables. Then you head off to school.

Celeste isn’t with you. Must be sleeping in today.

Six more days until Akikazu Osaragi dies in Pyre Ruin Valley. Will anybody miss him? The sharp, mechanical eyes of Veleis-sensei would notice his absence. The student body wouldn’t give a crap, though. They might even celebrate his disappearance. You don’t why, but the thought of it rubs you up the wrong way.

The student council president might pine for him. Probably. It was hard to decipher the relationship between Eriko Ozaki and Akikazu Osaragi. If the other boys and girls didn’t know, what chance do you stand?

“Yo!”

Takauji Koyoura runs up to you, dressed in the school shirt and trousers. “Hey, Takashi!”

“Hi, Takauji.” You reply.

“How was your weekend?”

You briefly look down at yourself, scanning over the few bandages on your arms and feeling the tiredness coating your body like a veil of shadow. “Sore.” You reply, simply.

“Whoa, did something happen, man?”

Master Key best. Black firebombs are too risky for new players who will likely waste them. Throwing stuff has a pretty long recovery animation, anyway.

I didn't get to say at the end of last thread, but I only see four ways that a DS quest would go.

In a place with little cover like the desert? Definitely. Anywhere else, it would be more useful for finding items and passageways, and that's if you can work out triangulation for distances and shit. It's not much of a shortcut if you need to jump 10 meters past this one bit that looked like 2 from the binoculars.

Well, personas can help with that, but still.

You look at your club mate with an expression so flat it could be mistaken for a pancake. “Yesterday, I spent the morning running around an otherworldly desert, fighting off Shadows and resting at bonfires. I’ve come to realize that group of crows are called murders for a reason, Takuaji. They are complete assholes and I hate them so much.”

Takauji stops and stares. “Takashi, what?”

You sigh. “I spent my Sunday training. Practising my kicks and fire magic. Didn’t sleep well, either.”

“Oh, okay then.” Takauji says, nodding in understanding. “Cool. I studied for the most part. Got to keep up with schoolwork. Midterm exams are coming up soon too.”

“They start in May, don’t they?”

“In the first week, yeah. Gotta be honest, I’m not looking forward to it.” Takauji groans. “So, you coming to martial arts club today?”

“Um…”

“Haha, I won’t blame you if you don’t. I don’t expect as many people to turn up today.”

“Why not?”

“Because the culture clubs are accepting new members.” Takauji says. “Drama, cooking, calligraphy…those sorts of activities.”

“Really, huh…” Joining the martial arts club had created a bond with Takauji. Would any of the culture clubs produce the same results? A new Persona would help. Maybe you should check out the clubs after school…

“I’m not really interested in joining more clubs, but I know a lot of people are. They're popular. You might have to fight for a placement.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

There is no morning assembly today. Instead, you have a house meeting. As you are already aware, the students of Akumachi-Kirijio are split into six houses: Alpha, Boxer, Caliban, Derham, Engel and Falco. The intended purpose is to introduce camaraderie and friendly competition amongst the student populace. A wealth of interschool competitions are introduced every year, including swimming, dueling, athletics, basketball and more. This is all information found on the school website, by the way.

You gather in one of the school’s auditoriums that Falco reserved. Celeste and Takauji are presumably elsewhere. The latter is in Boxer, so you might end up facing him on the courtyard one day. You see a twintailed redheaded girl walk up to on the stage. Gulping, she nervously swipes through notes on a smartphone before speaking.

“Um…good morning everyone. Welcome to Akumachi Kirijo, both the new and the old. My name is Yoshino Sagisawa, and I’m the house captain for Falco this year. I promise to carry out my role with diligence and responsibility. Thank you to all who voted for me last year!”

The speech continues…

“…so, I know Falco house has been suffering a string of losses over the past years, but that’s no reason we can’t try. Let’s put in 100% effort and clench, um, a victory!”

...she really doesn't sound confident in herself.

“…the spring athletics interschool competition will begin at the beginning of the week after next week. So if you’re interested in signing up in any of the sports—swimming, basketball or table tennis--please come at see me or a house staff member by the end of this week. And now, uh, let’s move onto introductions.”

Hmm?

“It’s customary for Falco to greet every new student at the beginning of the year. We have quite a few new faces today. Um, let’s go through them, shall we...?”

Well, this is kinda unexpected.

“…Takashi Wakui. If you would come up on stage, please…?”

Looks like you have no choice. Wouldn’t want to leave the house captain hanging. You climb up there and now stand in front over a hundred people. Their eyes are on you. What do you say?

“Uh, I guess I don’t have much to say here.” You say, a little awkwardly. “Nice to meet you, and let’s do our best?” You shrugs your shoulders. The crowd seems unimpressed. A girl yawns.

Come on, an imaginary mimic of your nee-san’s voice sounds in your head. Is that all Takashi? You need to present yourself better. Don’t be arrogant, but at least be confident and assertive. The demographic of Persona wielders respect strength as one of their virtues. Don’t give them a reason to bully you!

It has a point. You open your mouth again. “Um, well, I ain’t much now, to be honest.” You admit. “But I’m gonna catch up one day, so watch me. That’s all.”

The crowd is silent, then they begin to clap. It isn’t a thunderous standing ovation reserved for the end of a brilliant orchestral concert. But you can see that some of your house teammates are nodding and smiling a little. You grin back and leave the stage.

“Okay, thank you Wakui-san. Next up is…”

[Elsewhere…]

In the Caliban house meeting, AETHER’s second player prepares herself to address her comrades.

“Um, good morning everyone! My name is Celeste Tachibana.” The orange-haired girl smiles, all prim and proper with her ironed blazer and neat academy skirt. “I’m a transfer student from America and very glad to have been accepted into Akumachi-Kirijo. Truth be told, I didn’t expect to be speaking to my entire house right from the word go. But, now that I’m here…”

Celeste raises a finger to her lips and pretends to be contemplating her next few words. She smirks again. “I’d just like to say that I am the girl who will one day rise to the top of this academy and join the ranks of the elite.”

She pauses. “I’m fully aware the current me is weak and you have every right to laugh and jeer at me. You might call me overly ambitious or foolish. But mark my words: there will come a time where I will have surpassed all you ladies and gentlemen here. In any case, I hope we can still get along and enjoy some friendly competition with each other. Best regards for the rest of the year!”

She smiles again, bows and leaves the stage.

The house meeting is over. It’s time for the second class. The crowd surges forward, swarming at the exits of the door like a swarm of bees tracking down a jar of honey. You try to shove through. It’s too tightly packed, so you end up waiting for the masses to abate before proceeding.

You sit down on one of the seats and idle. The Interschool Spring Sports Competition would take up a whole day on the 26th of April. Midterms Exams start on the 6th of May and continue until the 10th. And the deadline for Akikazu’s mission was looming with every second ticking down from the clock. Really, what to do…?

“Um, may I help you?”

You eye her phone. “Is there something wrong with your phone, sempai?”

“Oh, no.” Yoshino Sagisawa responds. “I was just checking the list of the new house students.”

“So…what kinds of activities do the houses do? I’m new here and I want to know.”

“Lots!” Yoshino Sagisawa says. “The Spring Sports competition has basketball, table tennis and swimming. There’s a dueling tournament after semester 1 exams. In the autumn we play soccer, football, lacrosse and hockey. We also have minor competitions such as chess, literature and singing. And lastly, um, I guess the houses try to compete each other over grades. It makes the winner look good. Wins and losses in the competitions are tallied into this big ranking and calculated to decide the winner at the end of the year.”

“What’s the benefit of participating?”

“Um, a healthy commitment to extracurricular activities? Exercise?” Yoshino smiles awkwardly. “The house will be grateful if you volunteer, because the captain last year had an awful time trying to dig up people for the mandatory competitions. I’ll certainly appreciate it and so will the staff.”

“Anything else?”

“Well, if you do well, you might gain prestige among campus? Your fellow students may respect you more. Although, knowing half the kids here, they could very well seek a challenge from you. If Falco wins at the interschool competition, the students who contributed the most get rewarded. Certificates, money, presents and good notes to put on your resume for college.”

“I see…”

“If you want to sign up for anything, come and talk to me at lunchtime or after school. I mostly hang out in class 6-1.”

<THE_FIRST> Hey Celeste
<THE_FIRST> They’re selling mapo tofu in the cafeteria
<THE_FIRST> Sounds like it’s a big shot type of meal out around here
<THE_FIRST> Since I have nothing else to do this lunch
<THE_FIRST> Let’s eat it
<chocolat_orange> umm…
<THE_FIRST> Something wrong?
<chocolat_orange> i think i might pass takashi-kun. i’m not good with spicy foods.
<chocolat_orange> and remember that alcohol i drank at that get-together with your sister and her friends. yeah…it wasn’t good.

<THE_FIRST> Uh
<THE_FIRST> Because it’s so hot it might help us in trekking through Pyre Ruin Valley
<THE_FIRST> IDK
<chocolat_orange> i don’t think that makes sense.
<THE_FIRST> Oh come on, it’s just food.
<THE_FIRST> How terrible can it be?

Akumachi-Kirijo Academy Cafeteria, 12:45. Two bowls of steaming mapo tofu are placed on the table. You are sitting opposite Celeste Tachibana, who is poking at her meal with her chopstick. She looks very apprehensive, almost afraid of the heat and spiciness emitting off the tofu like redness spurting out of a volcano. She has the kind of grimace that might as well be a sign saying, ‘How the heck did you rope me into this?’

The mapo tofu looks very well made. Looks. It could taste like utter shit, for all you know. This damn thing cost 6000 Macca each, so it better damn well be good. For what it’s worth, the tofu is soft and the sauce seems fresh. It’s steaming and bubbling too. A side of fluffy white rice rests on the side, part of it mixing with the spicy liquid.

You close your eyes, count to three and open them.

“Thank you for the meal.”

OH GOD.

The reaction is instantaneous. It’s as if an entire volcano was exchanged with your oesophagus, sending all the magma and liquefied rock tumbling down your throat and mixing with your stomach lining. A hundred Agidynes have seared your tastebuds, sending your poor tear ducts flowing from the pain. This is not merely hot, it is a spicy explosive apocalypse!

And yet, you cannot stop eating, even though your tongue is well on its way to becoming a lumpy, dry piece of jerky. The tofu is fantastic! It’s soft and delicious and the vegetables have been mixed in really, really nicely. The rice was cooked just right to magnificently complement the sauce and the tofu. Guess the lunches in a private school are a cut above the rest, after all.

However, your limit is about to be reached. As well as you are withstanding this trial, you are not invincible. In order to conquer the Akumachi-Kirijo Super Spicy Mapo Tofu Challenge, you will need INTELLIGENCE to analyze the contents, UNDERSTANDING to set the pace, CHARISMA to display an aura of confidence to your peers and lastly WILLPOWER to give it your all and push it through!

You failed to fully eat the mapo tofu. It appears you will have to try again another time…

On the bright side:

>Your INTELLIGENCE has increased by 5!
>Your UNDERSTANDING has increased by 4!
>Your CHARISMA has increased by 4!
>Your WILLPOWER has increased by 5! Congratulations! Your WILLPOWER has reached Rank 2. It is now Standard!

“Water, water, water!”

You see Celeste dash off in search of a drink tap. You stand up to follow after her. But then something on the side of the plastic bowl catches your eye.

Is that…

Can it be…
>>
>>41963016

As much as I want to hit up the culture clubs and get a new Social Link, we can't just leave a man hanging. Restock on supplies and head out. Too bad we used the Traefuri Canister, though, it would have made getting back a lot easier. Hopefully we'll find another one as loot while we're there. I think once we start getting enough money from drops to afford it we should always carry at least three Traefuri Canisters. One for emergencies, and another two to fast travel to and from a location if we really need to get somewhere on a time limit.

For the next two weeks.

Let me make this clear.
Skipping the Blackened Void transition is a way of mitigating the length preparation process. You'll still receive a Persona of the Death Arcana before you leave, though. And you'll automatically receive supplies like water, food, equipment etc. You won't be able to customize your safehouse, go to the Forlorn Abyss, unlock vendor doors or anything like that.

This is also important. Once important missions are completed (like Akikazu's rescue), a timeskip will initiate, ending at the deadline of the cleared mission. It's done to prevent the quest's pacing from slowing to a crawl. You will gain significant social stat boosts, dependent on how early you completed the mission. Certain events may be triggered as well.

I should've explained this earlier. Sorry!
>>
>>41963696
Oh, and the timeskip won't negatively affect your chances of levelling up Social Links.

>Head to Pyre Ruin Valley (skip Blackened Void transition)

You'll be given choices in the middle of the timeskip, like this:

>I joined club A
>I joined club B
>I joined club C
>I didn't join a club at all.

And this will begin a scene where you're introduced to the club members and captain etc.

Or...

>I mostly studied at night.
>I trained with Shizuka
>I wandered outside a lot.

Stuff like that.

Random events may or not occur.

<THE_FIRST> Heads up Celeste
<THE_FIRST> Let’s go and rescue Akikazu
<THE_FIRST> I feel alright
<THE_FIRST> Well actually my arm muscles still feel a bit sore but it should be alright
<THE_FIRST> What about you Celeste?
<chocolat_orange> i’m ready whenever you are.
<chocolat_orange> let’s do this, takashi-kun!

So you gathered the necessary materials—food, water, tools—and entered the Blackened Void. You and Celeste boarded the Hollow Express, having equipped weapons and armor, towards the land of the eternal sunset.

But before that…you stopped by the Velvet Room and gained a new Persona of the Death Arcana. So, which one was it?

Oh, and by the way, you and Celeste reached the E+ rank as a result of successfully defeating the Rampaging Knight yesterday. Just thought you’d like to know.

NAME: Mokoi
RANK: E+
STATS: STR E+, MAG E, END E, AGL E+, LCK D, DEV D
AFFINITIES: Blocks Ice, Resists Dark, Weak to Fire
SKILLS: Hysterical Slap, Sukunda, Life Drain
-A humanlike spirit of Murngin lore that lives in the jungle and moves at night. He is the reincarnation of the "shadow soul" of humans, and kidnaps and eats children, sometimes causing war with humans.
-Hysterical Slap has a small chance to cause foes to become enraged, boosting their physical strength but lowering their defences.

NAME: Ghoul
RANK: E+
STATS: STR E, MAG E+, END+, LCK D, DEV E
AFFINITIES: Blocks Darkness, Resists Earth, Weak to Light
SKILLS: Mudo, Poison Skewer, Enervation
-Cannibalistic demon from Islamic lore. It feeds on the flesh of both the living and the dead. It is indistinguishable from normal humans, and prefers to prey on children and travelers.
-Enervation can cause foes to become, well, enervated, which decreases their combat potential.

[Choose only one]

I've always liked the little guy. And while he won't be useful in Pyre Ruins Valley, he should be useful later. Ice immunity could be really useful, and with Sukunda and Hysterical Slap we can disable enemy defenses nicely.

Also, we got our Death SL from a child, and both the potential Personas are things that eat children. That's not ominous, nope.

It's potentially pretty good when combined with Sukunda. Reduce their accuracy and evasion, then lock them into performing only basic attacks while further lowering accuracy and evasion. You chose Moh Shuuvu and Pixie, like yesterday. Pyre Ruin Valley is the as same as usual. Dry air, dark orange skies, barely a single scrap of vegetation in the landscape. You slip on your knuckledusters. Celeste draws her sword.

“Time to go.” You say, and the two of you set off. A group of Maya Shadows lurk nearby. You proceed to get the drop on them. Then you proceed to traverse the barren trail towards the first bonfire…

>>Takashi and Celeste: Reach the first bonfire

Good news: You and Celeste managed to reach here relatively unscathed. The RNG must be taking a break from his usual tendencies of sadistic whipping and ball-gagging, because the Shadows so far have been defeated rather easily. Even the toughest one went down quick enough, although that may be you kept whacking the bastard with Ippon-Datara’s hammer until it was flattened into the dirt.

Bad news: You barely gained any money from the encounters. Acquired money: 50 Macca. Now that is just pathetic…at least you gained more spoils than the Anti-Shadow Operatives on a normal day. Shadows in the real world don’t drop any money, unless they’re gold colored and with the bravery of a fleeing squirrel.

You also received a single Trafuri Canister from the drops, along with a small chocolate bar. It seems Trafuri Canisters are common items in the Blackened Void.

“Those fucking crows are up ahead.” You mention, crouched next to the flickering flames.

“You think they might have dispersed by now?” Celeste asks.

“Don’t think so. Game states are supposed to be constant.” You mutter. “They’re probably waiting for us beyond that plain, ready to peck our eyeballs out and feed them to their chicks.”

“Gross.” Celeste comments. “Hmm, what to do…we should try and push through and hope they leave us alone after a while.”

“Or we could kill them all. Don’t if we’re capable of doing that, though…” Sneaking around might be another option…

How will you handle this?

>Stealth past.
>Defeat as many ravens as possible and hope the rest flee.
>Kill them all.

>>Kill them all

“Time for bird season.” You growl. There’s no other choice. Gotta remove the pest problem before it spreads all over the valley like a cancerous growth and you find yourself hurling the Shadows into a bonfire (or something).

Not to mention, this is personal. Celeste looks positively murderous here. Maybe because the Ravens nearly destroyed her precious headphones—which she now safely secures back in the safehouse in the Forgotten City.

You both climb to your feet, equip your weapons and head towards the space where the Rampaging Knight used to be. Nodding at each other, the two of you run into the clearing and summon your Personas.

The murder of ravens are waiting. Flapping their wings, swinging their lanterns about, cawing madly. Sati readies flames and Moh Shuuvu forms ice between her mits.

“CAW CAW CAW CAW CAAAAAAAAAAW!”

“Mabufu!”

The two parties rush forward and the battle begins.

“Mabufu!”

“Maragi!”

Moh Shuuvu freezes the Ravens solid and sends them tumbling to the ground. Sati’s flames strike their masks and burn them to cinders. You switch to Ippon-Datara and force him to rampage across the battlefield, cleaving Ravens in half with his mighty hammer.

This continues for a few minutes. Turns out that the masks are their weak point and striking them causes massive damage. And since your skills can hit a wide area, do the math.

“Go, Celeste! ALL-OUT ATTACK!”

You and Celeste rush and beat the stuffing out of the remaining Ravens. You stamp on their fragile bodies as Celeste slices them up. The battlegrounds explode into a mass of skull-colored dust, for some strange reason. Who cares, the two of you have won!

“Too easy!” Celeste crows.

“We’re close, aren’t we?”

“Yeah.” You glance at your phone screen. Akikazu’s distress beacon is getting close. The two of you are sitting underneath the dried out shell of a dead tree. Once, this may have been a camping ground for explorers or travelers. The remnants of makeshift benches are present. Now, the space is empty and desolate, just like the previous checkpoint.

“He should be around the next bend.”

“I wonder what we’ll find there, or how he’s being imprisoned.” Celeste remarks. “It’s been over a day.”

“Hopefully we’ll free him and drag him back to the real world without much fuss. Fingers crossed, Celeste.” You say. The two of you weren’t particularly banged up from fighting the murder of Ravens. That battle had been almost insultingly easy, which made the nightmare from yesterday all the more baffling. “We should hurry.”

Around the corner is the remains of a traditional shanty town. Wooden structures, guts of buildings, makeshift roofs made out of metal and stone. The streets, or what’s left of them, are deserted. A heat haze obscures your view. The air is unnaturally silent. There are no signs or markings notifying passersby of the name of this destroyed settlement.

You crouch behind a sandy rock at the entrance. The beacon is flashing wildly. A Spotter would be nice right now. You’ve heard your sister mention how valuable they were to Anti-Shadow Operative teams. Spotters’ Personas were special—instead of focusing on combat, they trained themselves to scout ahead with magic and detect enemy weaknesses. Given how schizophrenic the Shadows’ weaknesses and strengths could be, a team without a good Spotter was basically committing suicide.

Unfortunately, there’s only you and Celeste. Two Japanese high school students, not soldiers. So…what will you do?

“Hello? Akikazu Osaragi? We’ve come to rescue you!” Celeste calls.

You hear a soft, rasping sound coming from the corner of the basement. Instantly, your head swivels to the direction of the cough. Celeste tightens her grip on her sword.

“Human voices? Fuck, I must be dreaming right now. Either that, or in purgatory.”

“Akikazu!” You rush over, treading against a hard stone floor. There your target is: disheveled, exhausted, eyes sunken but nevertheless alive. He’s hunched up against the wall in a cell, staring at the ground. A chain binds him to the wall. His blazer is missing, too. “Is that really you?”

“That voice…” Slowly, the blonde-haired boy raises his head. “Takashi Wakui? The kid I ate ramen with?”

“Yeah, it’s me! This isn’t a dream, no matter how much you think it is.”

“Shit. Why are you here?”

“We could ask you the same thing.” Celeste interjects.

Akikazu narrows his eyes. “And just who are you?”

“Celeste Tachibana. Takashi’s friend and fellow Player.”

“It’s kind of a long story.” You answer quickly. “We’ll explain it all to you once we get out of the valley. You look like you need a shower and a square meal.”

“We’re in a valley?” Akikazu asks. “I was wondering what kind of hellhole this shitty place was in. Ain’t like any place on Earth I've ever seen.”

“That’s sort of true. But trust us man, we’re here to help.”

“Then get me the hell out of here.” Akikazu snaps. “This place has a guard. A silent, black knight with a major stick up his iron-clad ass. He smashed me into a wall and wiped me out. We went out for one reason or another, and I sure as hell ain’t keen to wait until he comes back.” He fingers the chains tying him down. “Don’t know how you’re gonna break these off. The key is missing.”

“Oh, we’ve done this before. Takashi-kun, I’ll heat up the chains and you can strike them.”

“Wait, what?”

"Alright, but be careful..."

Celeste sets fire to the chains and you summon Ippon-Datara to smash them to pieces. Akikazu winces as sparks fly and metal screeches. The chain proves to be no match for your combined might and shatter easily.

“Fucking finally.” Akikazu stands up and stretches, letting out a satisfied gasp of air. He grins, vicious and raw.

There's about a 70% chance that AETHER will block us from using it, anyway. And then give us a tutorial about how some enemies can't be run from with Trafuri. After we've fought and beat the Black Knight, of course.

>>Akikazu: Eat

You watch as Akikazu Osaragi, the delinquent of Akumachi-Kirijo scarfs down the supplies, chocolate bar included, and chugs down half the water.

“Oh shit this is awesome where’d you two get food that tastes this good.”

Well, you can’t exactly blame him.

“I’m fine, dammit.”

“No you are not. Sit down and be healed!”

Celeste heals him with Dia, too.

>>Takashi: Search around the basement for anything useful.

This is a job left to Akikazu, again. The guy lets out a cheer from opening a treasure chest. But the room is too dark, and you can’t make out the exact shape of the weapon he’s holding. From what you can tell, it’s large and heavy.

>>Party: Open Trafuri Canister

You can talk later. It’s time the team returned home and rest for the rest of the day. Celeste pops open the device and waits for the countdown. The group is swallowed in a flash of yellow light. When it clears, the second bonfire is in view. You and Celeste smile at each other. Why wouldn’t you? The danger is cleared, the mission is almost done. Just another Trafuri Canister and you’ll be boarding the Hollow Express in no time.

Then Akikazu snarls, and you realize that the three of you are not alone.
>>

In a Game that refuses to hold your hand!

And also has told us that bonfires don't repel ALL shadows.

>>41967525

>>
>>41967515
We're the weakest ones. So instead of solving our problems with strength, we solve our problems in the style of the weak. If it doesn't work out, fuck it, we tried it at least.
>>
>>41967548
True, in that mission the only thing left to do was GTFO.
>>
>>41967548
>And also has told us that bonfires don't repel ALL shadows.
Not to mention that the Black Knight is a Denizen, not a Shadow. So who knows if bonfires repel them at all?

>“I’d just like to say that I am the girl who will one day rise to the top of this academy and join the ranks of the elite.”

She pauses. “I’m fully aware the current me is weak and you have every right to laugh and jeer at me. You might call me overly ambitious or foolish. But mark my words: there will come a time where I will have surpassed all you ladies and gentlemen here.
>>
>>41967549
We're relatively undamaged and there was no reason to try to avoid the boss fight. We're trying to get stronger remember?
>>
>>41967572
>>41967576
Embrace your "weakness" and defeat the "strongest" enemy regardless; such is the style of the weak.

The harsh scrapes of metal clashing against metal is unmistakable to your ears. Armor, worn and dented, groans in the heat. A heavy foot stamps against the dusty earth. A sword is drawn from its sheath, a shield then raised. From the other side of the bonfire, the black knight rises, sharp edge pointing directly at your body.

“What the hell?” Celeste cries.

“Dammit!” You growl. “He was waiting for us. Smart bastard…”

You retrieve the second Trafuri Canister. “At least we’ve got a method of escape. Won’t be—”

Then the black knight swings his sword in an arc. A black, inky haze bursts forth and seeps into the air. It surrounds you, darkening the area. The flame in the bonfires vanishes. The healing aura vanishes. And most importantly, the canister now refuses to work.

>Area has been sealed off! Escape is forbidden!

“What…”

“Look out!” Celeste shouts.

You glance up to see the black knight dashing forwards, sword poised and ready to strike. There’s no time to summon your Persona. Your only hope is to reach out with your fists and hope your knuckledusters can soak up the damage!

The sword doesn’t reach its target. Akikazu lunges forward and swings with all his might. A war hammer, sturdy and might, smashes against the sword. Sharpness fights against bluntness as boy and man try to overpower each other.

“Finally…” he sneers. “A chance for some fucking payback!” Akikazu pushes forward with all his might, knocking the black knight off guard. He then follows up with a horizontal strike, striking against the chest plate. The black knight is forced backward, stumbling across the dirt and nearly collapsing against the tree.

“How’d ya like that, you son of a bitch?” Akikazu laughs. “It’s about damn time this game gave me my choice of weapon! And I’m free of those anti-magic chains, too. Together with my Persona, I’m gonna smash that damned armor of yours into a thousand tiny pieces!”

The card of the Hanged Man is summoned. Akikazu grins and crushes it in his palms.

Embracing weakness doesn't mean running. It doesn't mean taking an easy way out. We acknowledge out weakness, we know we are worthless as we stand. We confront if and press through with work. We use what cunning we have, leverage it. But above all else we push foward, because if AETHER has shown us anything, has any value in it, this bastard has shown us that change is possible, that a rebirth is in our grasp.

“Ubelluris!” he roars.

A wave of blue forms out of the shattered fragments, congealing into a figure tall and powerful. A literal stone giant, towering over Akikazu, lumbers out of the ethereal cobalt aura. It howls, a voice guttural and deep as the trenches of the earth. The demon slams its stony fist against the ground, causing it to quake in agony. Raw power and strength, that is the merit of Akikazu Osaragi’s Persona!

“Sati!”

“Moh Shuuvu!”

Two other Personas are summoned. One, a immolated fire goddess. The second, a ghost of a young girl who never experienced love. Both, ready to blast the opponent with all manner of magic.

If the black knight is irritated or afraid, it does not show. No gasp of shock, no tremble in the body. It merely stands up straight and repositions its weapons. Heavy shield in left, greatsword in the right. It looms forward, stalwart and unflinching.

“Ready, everyone?” The path is clear. A monster stands in your way. End its existence permanently. Tear its life out and crush it beneath your heel! “Let’s go!”

>Objective: Defeat the rogue Denizen of Pyre Ruin Valley!
>>
>>41967682
>“Moh Shuuvu!”
We're gonna have to explain why we don't have a hermit persona later right?
>>
>>41967689
Especially since he already saw us summon Ippon-Datara. I guess we can talk about it with him on the ride back to the safe house.
>>
>>41967689
He's not asking so he doesn't need to know. If he asks, we'll tell him.
>>
>>41967689
