You stand in an expansive sandy field, surrounded by your fellow cadets of the 101st Trainee Squad. You and all these other future soldiers are here to train in order to fight the Titans, giant humanoid creatures that eat human. With all of humanity surrounded by the great walls Maria, Rose, and Sina, the area outside is filled with titans and incredibly dangerous. A day after you and all the other cadets arrived, you were informed that Wall Maria had just fallen. With the need for extra soldiers being a pressing issue, your squad will be trained harder than the previous squads, who lived in a time of peace. Pacing between the rows of cadets is your Head Instructor, singling out specific students and getting them to sound off. Oh shit, he's coming your way, and you've got no time to prepare. The Head Instructor strides up to you and you salute, knowing that you must be the next cadet to sound off. "And who are you, you spineless maggot!?" He half-asks, half-yells at you, an expression of disgust on his face.

You give a salute, state your name and district, then explain about your lack of food. "DID I ASK YOU FOR YOUR LIFE STORY, MAGGOT? I DON'T THINK SO! You want to eat? You can eat every day here, until the Titans eat you! You're assigned to the Western division, about face!" With that, he forcibly turns you to face the east, where the Eastern Division's barracks and training areas are. You remain standing like this until all cadets are dismissed, and everyone begins to head towards their respective barracks. The trek is largely made in silence. Once you arrive at the eastern barracks, an officer directs you to your sleeping quarters, where you put your meager collection of belongings, and then to a mess hall where you shall be given lunch. You're one of the last to arrive at the Mess Hall, and as such only 3 tables have a free space left.

>The first table is the most lively, with a rowdy bunch of cadets all laughing and joking with each other, a stark contrast to the terrible news about Wall Maria you all received that morning.

I was only slightly killed! There was an emergency in the apartment next to mine and I had to go deal with it. I'm sorry guys, but it was very nearly a life or death matter.

You take a seat at the table of three, well, four now. Your new companions each introduce themselves in turn. First there's a cocky guy with short blond hair and fair skin called Albert, seems like the daredevil type. Then there's a wildly laughing girl with hair that's a strange of mix of light brow and dark brown, and slightly tanned skin. She reminds you of the "Hyenas" in the books you read back home, and introduces herself as Ingrid. Finally, a slightly more composed young woman named Anne-Marie, with red hair tied back in two short twintails, and a small smattering of freckles on her cheeks. The the three of them are from Wall Sina, which goes some way to explain their rowdy demeanor. You sit and chat with them throughout lunch, even throwing out a few lame jokes you know. Before you know it, Lunchtime is over, but training doesn't begin until tommorow, so you have free time until lights out. Albert wants to go look around the training area, Anne-Marie wants to go for a light jog, and Ingrid is going to study the books she had on 3-dimensional Manuever Gear in order to be more prepared for training tomorrow.

You and Anne-Marie head out for a jog around the barracks, keeping a steady pace as you circle the buildings again and again. "Refreshing, isn't it?" Anne-Marie calls back towards you as you lag behind slightly. "There's nothing like a nice jog to clear your head, am I right?" You can only nod in agreement, as your recent lack of nourishment means you're not in the best shape at the moment. After a while, the dinner bell is rung, and the two of you head back to the mess hall. You eat with Ingrid and Albert again, and as the dinner goes on, your merriment distracts the other tables, who politely ask you to be quiet. The four of you continue with slightly less vigor. You hit lights out straight after dinner, and proceed straight to your bunk, which is directly above Albert's. You drift off to sleep almost immediately after your head hits the pillow, dreaming about your family. You don't know if they survived the breach of Wall Maria, but if they have, they'll be able to get in contact within a few weeks. In your dreams, your entire immediate family appears in front of you.

In your dream, you see your mother appear in front of you, then fade away. You are the last of your family, left to fend for yourself. Rather than beg on the streets you have come here to fight for your survival, and fight you will. But for now, you need to learn to master the maneuvering gear. You wake up in the morning refreshed, and ready for today's 3DMG training. You quickly get dressed and head out. When you arrive, you see that the training area is lined with harnesses, which you'll be required to stay upright in if you want to have any chance at all of becoming a soldier. You take your place at one of the stations, and an officer assists you getting everything into place. Before he lets you go, he offers some parting words of advice. "Don't struggle, just work with it, and don't worry if it takes more exertion than you thought." With that, you are released and now must remain upright by angling your body and straining your muscles.

>>
As you are released, you feel the wires pulling on you, keeping you upright, as long as you stay steady. For a second you lurch backwards and almost tip over, but you extend your arms and balance yourself. After some time with the harness, you figure out another position that requires less effort to pull off. You feel like a natural at this. And hey, the Head Instructor isn't glaring at you like usual, so it looks like today is your day.

The rest of the day is just standard training with the harness.

And now we reach timeskip mode. I'll be cutting forward to a couple key points during your years of training, starting next post.

Next Post Coming Shortly.

You're zipping through the forest on your 3DMG, part of a titan hunting practice exercise, light as a feather. Albert is somewhere around, Ingrid's definitely behind you, and Anne-Marie is leagues ahead. Right now all you're focusing on is locating titans and making sure you don't hit a tree. A tree... Oh, there's one. Wait a minute.

Tree.

You maybe low on heads but you've got good luck. Two sixes in a row AND your successful rolls have yet to be higher than 15. Anyway, that's a 12, so I'll start writing.
>>
Rolled 6 (1d6)

The tree is no match for your insane maneuvering skills, and instead of head-on colliding with it, you hook into its branches to swing up and around, breaking through the top of the forest. As you survey the trees below, you spot a wooden dummy titan to the right, and swing off in that direction. Rushing through the trees, you reach the clearing in record time and head towards the dummy. You've broken off from the others, so this is almost definitely your kill. There's no messing around today.

Plan of attack?

We're from a frigging farm, agriculture builds muscles we may have a slight advantage here.

Don't get surrounded, keep them in your line of sight, try and get one of them away from the others and whup them. The others should hesitate and will probably jumble up when trying to work together against a single opponent. Don't try to block strikes head on, deflect or dodge them. When we hit, hit hard. A jab to a persons bicep causes pain and temporary paralysis if done hard enough. A fist to the diaphragm or solar plexus can lay a man out.

Remember, the only fair fight is the one you lose. This is a combat exercise, not a boxing match.
>>
Rolled 3 (1d6)

You mess around, and Albert manages to get some pretty good hits, getting you in the ribs three times. The wind is knocked out of you for a little while, but you're certainly not out yet. You unleash the DEADLY SPINNING BLIND CRANE KICK! Whirling around midair, you aim for Albert. Your master technique will definitely be the clincher here! It doesn't connect, unfortunately, and you land back onto the ground. staggering a little. Albert lands another 3-hit combo to the ribs, then dances back as Anne-Marie steps forward, snaps her leg up, and kicks you in the jaw, in whatever the foot version of an uppercut is. But you've no time to ponder the proper terminology, as Ingrid moves in with a devastating roundhouse kick, knocking you on your back. Because of this incident, The nickname "Turtle" stuck with you throughout your trainee days.

Alright, timeskipping in next post.

You now have the choice of becoming a member of the Recon Corps, the Military Police, or the Garrison. So which of these illustrious branches do you choose?

>>41929508
I'm actually totally okay with that naming convention. Rolling Ragnarok sounds like an awesome name on it's own, but too clunky to use in the field all the time.

Alright, going with this. You are barely shaken by Rolling Ragnarok's attempts to buck you off, and you quickly gain control. As you gallop him around the field, you realize how he easy he actually handles when he's not trying to knock off his rider. You spend the rest of the day mastering the basics of horseriding and then head off to bed. But not before you give Rolling Ragnarok his callsign of Zeus. The others shake their heads a little as you call him that, but what do they know? The next expedition outside the walls is in just a week, and you just know you're ready for it. The question is, are your friends?

>>
>>41929785
Depends on what mood you are in. For the most part it is melodramatic and plodding. It was just that first half hour that really got me though. It goes from teenage angst to bloody shitstorm.
I mean, I knew I was going to watch titans eat people, but I guess I was used to the gory discretion shots that the anime does. The first titan kill is a slow-motion POV shot of you going upside down into a titans distended mouth. It then pans to an outsiders perspective as the bloke is crunched and two little titans giggle and fight over his leg.
Have a watch and make up your own mind. Just be aware that it is a live-action adaptation and thus subject to being rather shit.
