The smooth glassy waves of the Pacific blur into a flat plane as you hurtle low towards the smoking dot on the horizon. You focus on the towering columns of smoke rising from the little pork-chop shaped dot of black ash and weather-scoured volcanic rock, searching for your target - *there.* The long, trim shape of a runway hewn into the unyielding rock. Puffs of black smoke begin to blossom around you as you begin to wave through the air at five-hundred plus knots, fifty feet off the deck. The sky in front of you seems to vanish in a hail of glowing beads of light; light AA hurling a storm of lead in your direction as heavier guns; 37 and 40mm spear heavenward on shafts of smoke contrails.

Visual contact is lost for a second as you pitch up violently, riding the rocket motor up to a a thousand feet in a few seconds – and then Iwo Jima appears below you, a nightmarish cloud of flak bursts and tracers reaching out for you – too slow, too slow as you plummet for the target at incredible velocity, the junction of a taxiway and the runway growing larger-

- and freezing a moment before impact.

You glance askance at Goto, who's wielding the remote at the secondary viewscreen. He presses a button and the recorded video rewinds swiftly. There's obsidian in his eyes, now you hadn't seen before; hard and sharp – and a sickly pallor to his face. But his mouth is set in a hard line, and his expression radiates intense focus.

He presses a button, and the video freezes, then begins stepping forward, frame-by-frame. Then it stops. “There. Lower-right corner.”

You peer. “A... humanoid? Shooting at the missile?”
>>
“No,” Hate says from the corner of the room. “Look to its left – that's muzzle flash. Probably an LMG...” he steps forward and points at an almost invisible line of stringy blobs. “I've seen LMG tracers on FLIR often enough to know. The one facing the camera is an infantryman de-assing the area – probably a peeling withdrawal.”

“There's people still alive on that rock?” you breathe.

“JSDF keeps a four-hundred man garrison there,” Goto replies. “They couldn't hold the base, but there's plenty of places to hide on that miserable rock.”

“How the hell are the Abyssals performing air ops if they-”

“Shit,” Hate cuts you off, “we had Army P-51s flying close air missions from Iwo's airfield before we finished taking that rock.” A beat. “Not that the Marines needed them, but they wanted to help, so, you know.”

“Settle,” Hornet's terse voice cuts in. “My SBD's just found the surface group.”

“Onscreen,” you say.

Goto and Hate both look at you.

“ON. SCREEN,” you enunciate clearly, and this time the fucking voice-recognition software processes it properly and increments the secondary display screen, piping you a feed from a Global Hawk flying out of Kaneda. The image jitters and jumps a bit – the Hawk is “close,” but at those magnification levels it's still like peering through a straw – but you get a pretty amazing view of the SBDs nonetheless after Hornet relays a few position/altitude corrections to the operators.

“Helldivers,” Shoukaku whispers.
>>
“Enemy bearing?” you ask.

“Zero-One-Four.”

The drone operator dutifully pans the camera over and for the first time you get a good look at the enemy surface action group; little dots sprawled across the ocean. The camera begins singling out ships and going to even higher magnification; giving you brief, shaky glimpses of their bow-on silhouettes.

“At least six cruisers,” you mutter. “Heavy or light, I can't tell.”

“Looks like... three destroyer divisions. Twelve or fifteen, unless I'm counting subchasers by accident,” Goto adds.

“Admiral, my bombers are reporting enemy fighter escort over the fleet!” Hornet says sharply. “Twin-engined, on an intercept course!”

Planefag, is there an ETA on the P-8s and the other human support aircraft.
>>
>>41834024

Best part is that squadrons of those actually did operate from Iwo Jima.

Throw in that some squadrons saw so little action that some ended the war without a single kill to the squadrons name and you have units ripe for Abyssalification since they did nothing n ww2.

>[x] Order the strike to pick targets now attack and exfiltrate at best speed by flight (units of four.)

The point of this strike was to get some recon and a few cheap hits before returning to CAP our task force, not to get stuck in. Once Iwo and the enemy carriers are out of commission, we can pick off the enemy SAG at our leisure.

Also, barring the Abyssals having a few more carriers we don’t know about, we can assume their CAP came from Iwo. That limits how many escorts the strike inbound from Iwo will have, which is good news. And I doubt these came off carriers, because twin-engine carrier - based fighters are too modern a development for the Abyssals.

So after the last thread I decide I need to learn me some combat, so I started reading through Pacific AARs. What I discovered astonished me:

>Serial 0679, Attack on Allied Personnel and Property by a Plane of American Type and Markings.

>This report covers an attack by an observation plane from the USS Northampton on a British auxiliary cruiser operating out of Apia, Samoa Island on January 23, 1942. This attack was made because the British vessel did not answer the plane's recognition signal. The pilot ordered the ship abandoned and then droppe two bombs, both near misses, and then straffed the vessel with machine gun fire. Following the attack the British crew returned to the ship and managed to get back safely to Apia.

>After an investigation the pilot of the observation plane was found to have been unjustified in attacking this vessel.

Indisputable proof that Northampton is best cruiser.

>Taking out those carriers should be a top priority for us though, because while they're in the game it's five effective flight decks against our three.

It's already too late. We haven't completely fucked up everything, but we're pretty close. We should have sent the Hornet's bombers in with the strike against the Abyssal carrier force, where they could have insured a much heavier knock-out blow. Instead they're going to be hit, unescorted, over the surface group by those defending fighters. The survivors who get back will not be adding much to the defense against the Abyssal carriers' strike, and we'll still have to weather whatever Iwo Jima base is throwing at us.

It looks like the only really right call was using the Tomahawks on Iwo Jima so at least there won't be a second strike from there. But the odds are good one or more of the Abyssal carriers will survive, and Harder and his wolfpack were not doing very well at all when we last left them. And we're going to have to rely on the SSNs and support assets against the surface group; if we'd committed to knocking out the Abyssal carriers with all our available strike groups we could have thrown a second strike against them instead of having to follow up against the carriers.

Using the friggin' dive-bombers to thicken up CAP was a complete misuse of resources and the failure to concentrate assets on the Abyssal carriers is still going to fuck us in the ass, though.

>I thought everyone agreed to strike the CVs a few threads back?

Detailed analysis only happened /after/ the thread, which was dominated by revelation of the trap which encouraged the subsequent defensive-mindedness. Holding a vote on strategy at a cliffhanger and then implementing results in the next thread might just not be a good idea. We'd almost certainly have sent Hornet's strike group with the Jap planes to attack the carriers if the sudden trap hadn't made the players too cautious.

There's a valuable lesson here about how being too defensive-minded and cautious can be just as bad as being too aggressive. Though maybe the lesson is that votes to deal with a cliffhanger should happen in the next thread instead.

Traditional Japanese naval defense doctrine was to establish a strong defensive perimeter around the beaches/ports to deter enemy attacks via the sea. After that was literally.... nothing.

Iwo Jima... was a complete reversal of that doctrine. The GENERAL in charge of Iwo Jima in WW2 knew he was royally fucked, so instead of following Japanese doctrine, he engaged in a punishing gureilla(sic) war that made the American advance bleed.

Instead of the projected 7 days estimated by the USN to take Iwo Jima, it took nearly a month.

And THAT is why the Marines hold such reverence for Iwo Jima.

>In a carrier battle, being defensive means you get another chance to strike the enemy. Otherwise, you get no second chances.

And the enemy also gets another chance to strike. Which is a /problem/ when the enemy has more assets than you do. Their carrier group will have been hit by one air strike, ours by two air strikes. So if they get a third air strike in while we get a second strike in, it's very likely those results will be much less favorable than if we'd overwhelmed them on our first strike.

By which I mean we have more dead shipsluts.

You flick your eyes at your watch and hiss – the laws of Time and Space are knocking again, and you're cutting it awfully fine. “Tell them to pick out the closest targets and nail them.”

The strike force – eleven SBDs and four Hellcats – split off in groups of four and three, angling for the most attractive target in their area. The Hellcats swing towards the incoming twin-engined machines; a horrific grisly grin shining out of a black carapace sandwiched between two segmented thorax-like nacelles. The incoming heavy fighters break off their attack run when the Hellcats give them a good squirt or two at long range; and then the fighters push over into dives at the closest escorts below them. They're some of the deckload of fighters you ordered Hornet to spot before dawn; when they were launched to clear the deck for a hasty launch of her SBDs she sent a few along as escorts, so they retained the light bombload you'd ordered slung. The “pilots” enter brief, steep attacks against the abyssal escort screen, throwing up towering columns of spray around the destroyers nimbly weaving through them – one of them with the old curved hull of a “torpedo boat destroyer” and another sporting the archaic four-stack design of an interwar destroyer, replete with the usual abyssal nightmare garnish.

There's nothing to be done about it now. It's too late to change strategy. Hornet's unescorted divebombers are going to be butchered by the Abyssal fighters, and the survivors will do what they can in the CAP but be in no position to carry out another strike later on. So it's going to be up to the results of the purely Japanese strike and seeing just how effective our air defenses are.

Afterward we'll almost certainly have to strike the Abyssal carrier group again, and make damned good use of our support assets to escape without any further serious losses.

Another monitor flicks into life as the drone operator gets his second long-range camera locked on (the fact that Global Hawks *have* two of them is presumably something you Didn't Need To Know.) You hear the faint sound of Shoukaku's odd footwear scraping across the tight-weave carpet; a sound you unconsciously associate with a man subtly stiffening his posture when someone Important walks into a room. You don't need to look to know she's thrumming with tension as the shaky camera feed shows the eleven SBDs motoring towards their targets, three flights singling out ships from the escort screen. They roll into their attacks, peeling out of formation in hard turns and turning inverted as they enter their dives to keep eyes on the target throughout the attack. Shoukaku cease to breathe as they pop their dive brakes. They seem to be moving in slow-motion, the attack stretching impossibly long; the small dark silhouettes vivid against the cornflower blue sky, with no background to give their velocity reference. You count ten, twenty, thirty seconds -

- and the sea seems to jump into the narrow field of view from nowhere, causing Shoukaku to gasp. The bombs swing out on yokes that sling the bombs clear of the SBDs propeller arcs as the bombers pull out at the last second, the heavy, sturdy planes pulling out of their dives within a few hundred feet of the ocean. Columns of spray explode around the abyssal warships -

“GOD!” Shoukaku cries as the view vanishes in a horrible, blinding flash. The screen fuzzes as the operator disables the FLIR enhancement filter; and the image snaps into awful clarity; a fireball climbing for the sky.

“Right through the forward magazine,” Hate murmurs. Another two blinding explosions obliterate the view, and when they clear the ancient pseudo-ironclad is gone, and the four-stacker is now a three-stacker, her remaining chimneys bent and battered and afire stem-to-stern from flaming oil hurled on her by her expired mate. The SBDs motor away at wavetop height. The heavy fighters come thundering in to harass them, but the unburdened Hellcats are already zipping their way.

Except for one. The other drone cam is swishing back and forth trying to follow the maneuvering machine with its narrow field-of-view as it sheds its 12,000 feet of altitude in a tight downward spiral. The camera finally stops moving as the fighter levels out around 3,000 feet and plummets into a near-vertical dive, pulling out just over the waves as it races towards a destroyer turning away hard, hurling tracers and flak bursts into the air. The Hellcat's nose jerks up sharply and her bombs fly free for a few long seconds before they hit the calm water and glance off like stones, bouncing three, four, five times before they slam into the tin can's thin sides and detonate with terrible force. The pilot aimed for the stern and hit; you see the tiny dot of something on what looks a lot like a depth-charge thrower turn into a nimbus of light before entire stern vanishes in an explosion.

So luck is a stat in the actual game, but do we have anything so far indicating that there is a similar probability-warping effect around the shipgirls in this quest? “Better than nothing,” you murmur. You make a silent plea to whatever God there may be that you'll have mobile decks and planes enough in two hours to make this initial swipe meaningless, but you know full well it might not work out that way.

“Kaga. Akagi,” Goto groans into his headset. “Status.”

“Admiral!?” Akagi replies. “Admiral, are you ok-”

“Second strike is almost ready for launch,” Kaga replies calmly. “We're turning south into the wind in a few minutes.”

“Ah.” He flicks his eyes over the multitude of screens currently displaying your battle group – the go-pro cams on the plane guard destroyers, the top-down feed from an MQ-8 hovering over the group and the camera feed from the TV gun directors mounted high on Fitzgerald and Mustin's superstructures. He squints at Hornet, and fumbles blearily with his remote till the view is enhanced, showing the rest of the arrows with dark navy-blue fletching stuffed in her quiver, ready to be fired. “Sending a strike too, uhh?”

“T-those are for CAP,” Shoukaku tells him.

Goto turns his bleary eyes to you – and then closes them for a moment. “Uh.”

“Someone had to make a call,” you tell him. “I made it.”

He looks ready to snap at you – and then he clamps up into a thin-lipped grimace of resignation. “Yeah. I know.”

“You feeling good enough to help me out?”

Kongou almost leaps at you from her position hovering by Goto's side, her warm brown eyes riveting you with a panicked, desperate plea – and then she glances at Goto, tears forming in the corners of her eyes. You know what she's thinking – she wants nothing more than to get him out of this awful room, this awful everything- but without her trusted teitoku at the helm, she fears for her sister's lives.

Goto seems to feel much the same. He turns his hard dark eyes to the tactical screens, flicking his gaze over his units, his kanmusu, his girls – and then sighs. “I... I've been compromised. If you give me command again, I – what if they – no telling what they *did* to me-”

We should see about getting Harder some upgraded torpedoes for his next op. Mk16s are a direct upgrade of Mk14s with better range and a much more powerful warhead. However it was also more expensive, the USN used both types up until the 70s. If the ordnance techs managed to un-fuck his Mk14s they should be able to get him some.

This is meant to be a quick harrassment strike to get the bombs off the planes so the SBDs can return to CAP our own task-force. Get in fast, rattle their cage, then bug out and cover our own carriers. Timing is critical, and right now actually damaging the enemy heavy units is strictly a bonus.

It's hard to find data on the Mk16 because it was introduced at the very end of the war and gyro guided torpedoes were going obsolete. No one had a navy that was worth using them on. By contrast the Mk 14 is very well documented because of it's various fuckups.

As far as I can tell though the Mk16 is a direct upgrade to the Mk14. It has the same 21 inch diameter and the same length, but is some 305 kilos heavier.

Mk14
Date In Service: 1931
Weight: 3,061 lbs. (1,388 kg)
Overall Length: 20 ft 6 in (6.248 m)
Warhead: 668 lbs. (303 kg) TPX
Range / Speed: 4,500 yards (4,100 m) / 46 knots or 9,000 yards (8,200 m) / 31 knots
Power: Wet-heater steam turbine
Guidance: Mark 12 Mod 3 gyro

Mk16
Date In Service: 1945
Weight: 3,922 lbs. (1,799 kg)
Overall Length: 20 ft 6 in (6.248 m)
Warhead: 960 lbs. (435 kg) HBX
Range / Speed: 11,500 yards (10,500 m) / 46 knots
Power: Hydrogen Peroxide (Navol) turbine
Guidance: Mark 12 Mod 3 gyro

Incidentally the Mk15 torpedoes used on US Destroyers were very similar to the Mk14, being 20% longer. The Mk15 got the same technology upgrade that the Mk14 did. At the moment only Sammy and Willie could carry Mk17s but it would be a huge upgrade, the maximum range alone is over 3 times that of the Mk 15s.

Mk17
Date In Service: 1945
Weight: 4,800 lbs. (2,177 kg)
Overall Length: 24 ft 0 in (7.315 m)
Explosive Charge: 880 lbs. (399 kg) HBX
Range / Speed: 18,000 yards (16,500 m) / 46 knots
Power: Hydrogen Peroxide (Navol) turbine
Guidance Mark: 12 Mod 3 gyro

I think it was a CIA-funded experiment into the possibility of actual psychics. The basis for the experiment was (I believe) unconfirmed reports that the Soviets were doing the same.

All in all, it just amounted to a bunch of guys being paid to stare at goats and try to spontaneously develop psychic-powered death glares.

Goto's been a central figure in your brief time at Yokosuka, but you haven't really thought about *him* much, busy as you were rushing from one crisis to the next. Offically your job here was to be the Nominal American in charge of the Nominal American Shipgirl Presence, and devote yourself to managing their needs, keeping them from Turning To The Dark Side and handling the paperwork associated therewith. It's Goto's show and always has been – you figured he gave you command of the skirmish where Naka got hurt because Arizona was the heavy hitter in that one, and you did well enough that he let you keep the reigns when the hostile battleships revealed themselves. Had you made a call he didn't like you were sure he would've relieved you immediately.

You were wrong. Even today, before that damned phone call, he was discussing strategic and tactical options with you, bouncing ideas between you like a ping-pong ball. He's been treating you like an equal, and you were simply too strung-out (and perhaps flat-out unsophisticated-salty-dawg-can't-learn-Brass-tricks stupid) to realize the implications. You get nervous and self-conscious when Admiral Thomas walks into the room, but you never really looked at Goto for what he is – a man commanding a fleet at least as large and powerful as 7th fleet itself.

High commanders maneuver sterile little force icons on big maps just like the one glowing on the wall of the CIC. It's easy to rationalize hundreds or thousands of sailors as pawns in the larger game, men who signed up for the job and knew the risks. At worst he might personally know a few of the skippers on each boat from prior service. But Goto has a face and a voice to put with each little blue dot – many of the most vulnerable and expendable are the youngest and most innocent, children in every sense – and he's been doing it for sixteen fucking months.

Early in the morning, in this shadowed CIC, you suddenly realize why Kongou idolizes him so much. They all should. And it tells you exactly what you need to know. You look into Goto's eyes and speak firmly.

“They got into my head, once,” you tell him. “Didn't even talk – just... just looked at me. And I knew. I *knew* them for what they were, some... some evil, fucking *evil* thing, by instinct.”

“... and?” he asks in the silence.

“And then I stood up and I fought the bastards with everything I had.”

Goto sighs, and for a moment you see the load resting on the man. Kongou slips up behind him and wraps her arms around his middle, burying her face against his neck as she hugs him tightly. The lithe Admiral seems to swell with authority, his spine stiffening as he slowly shrugs off Kongou's affections with sheer Authority.

“God *damn* it Kongou, I'm *working.*”

Kongou's expression brightens like a flashbulb; a brilliant flash of smile and joy that dims as she remembers the atmosphere. “Y-yes,” she says. “C-c-offee for teitoku!” She dashes off in pursuit.

“Uh,” Goto says, sagging as soon as she's left the room. “Okay, sit-rep please?”

“I've had them steaming east to stagger the enemy attacks,” you tell him. “The hostile carrier strike should hit us in about -” you check your watch - “forty minutes. Kaga and Akagi should have their second strikes off the decks in about five.”

“What's with the SBDs?”

“Hornet can warm up planes on her flight deck-”

He raises an eyebrow.

You shrug and plow on “-so she was able to get most of a squadron of 'em up in time to hit the hostile surface group and get back here just before the first wave hits.”

“So-”

“Rest of them will go up when they turn into the wind to launch Akagi and Kaga's strikes. We'll keep the fighters stacked at altitude against dive bombers and let the SBDs go gunning for any torpedo bombers.”

He process that, thinking intently. “I can see it working.”

“In about thirty minutes,” you affirm with false confidence.

“Iwo?”

“We were just doing BDA when you came around and stole the remote. Pretty sure the runways are fucked, but we-”

“-don't know how fast abyssals can fix things and they probably launched a ton of shit before the missiles got there and we're fucked anyways,” Goto finishes.

“We've got our own land-based air moving now,” you offer. “The timing is gonna be tricky, but we should have help for the CAP.”

He sighs and rubs his eyes. “Nothing to do now-”

“-but wait,” you finish. You fucking hate it, but you know he's right. You turn your eyes back to the sterile blue tactical plot, and let your imagination run wild trying to guess what kind of horrors are whistling through the air towards your girls at this very moment. You feel the cold chill of dread that Shoukaku did minutes ago – somewhere overhead, plummeting towards you, is an Iron Fist.

And all you can do is wait for it to land.

actually doesn't make sense to do that.

(civilian) Planes burn the most fuel on takeoff, and fuel is one of the most important bottlenecks to a successful passenger aircraft operation. So if faced with a choice to use a plane with greater range and having a plane do multiple short hops and pay for on-ground refuelling, most civil airline companies will opt for the longer-ranged plane.

Okay, time for a crash course in submarine warfare. I'll be releasing segments as I finish them

Part 1) Sensors
Sonar is your life. You can listen passively to the sounds everything else is making. This is your Passive Sonar. You should be relying on this always. SSNs should be much quieter than anything that we'll come across, and they should be easy to detect. The only problem with the passive sensors is that it takes a bit of triangulation to get a good firing solution. This takes time, but it is by far the preferred way to do things.

The next thing we have is our Active Sonar. As it sounds like, we are actively doing something to listen to. This is the PINGing that you hear about in movies. Never use this unless you absolutely have to, as it lights you up as well. And by "absolutely have to", I mean you have no other choice.

Now, there are inbuilt sonars on the submarine, but by far the most sensitive tool that we have is called a towed array. As it sounds, it's a sonar array that you tow behind you. You can retract it towards you. Going too slow obviously makes it fall, and turning can cause it to not work very well. You don't want to drag it on the bottom, so watch out.

Another thing that could blind us is speed. You can't hear much of anything if all you hear is the water rushing around you. As such, we'll likely be creeping along at speeds of 8 knots or below. This is so that we can still hear, and we don't make noise.

If an object accelerates too fast in the water, it moves the water out of the way and leaves a little air bubble behind, which water then rushes to fill. This is cavitation, and it's noisy as fuck. Try to avoid it.
>>

>>41837526

Looking at the Google Earth view of Tinian, all the runways are still there, though only one has been maintained (the furthest one in the pic) and the rest are pretty much useless. Then again, shipgirls and abyssals are magic - awakening might restore the island to its WW2 state. That'd be...bad.

>>41837588

SSNs are plain dangerous to everything - each torpedo is about as powerful as a WW2 torp, but with modern guidance it will hit exactly where it needs to for maximum damage so you'll only need one per target; and the big nuke boats carry a lot more of them than the old WW2 ones did.
>>
>>41837663
You have to be a retard to not be able to figure those options out if you actually read the last few threads.

1) its underwater so its submarines, its not with the carriers so it has to be Harder and the subsluts.
2) its underwater so subs, and its under our friendly carriers which means its the SSNs on ASW duty.
3) The enemy is south of our carriers not north, and its really high up so planes, ie its the F-22 and other conventional fighters.

QUESTION

So if we deliberately make noise, we both blind ourselves and reveal our own location

But what if we had a way to make noise somewhere other than where we are currently? does such a cool decoy toy exists for subs, or just in sci fi?
>>
>>41837870

Anything you can tow would be somewhat close, and the line would make noise in water too.

I think they have decoys that can be fire from torpedo tubes that can do the same thing, follow a plotted coarse.

Not only is she guaranteed to be an Abyssal, she's one of the only Abyssals that has a damn good reason to hate us.
>>
>>41837870
I believe acoustic decoys do exist, but those are towed behind ships to throw off torpedoes.
A passive sonar reciever would probably pick up the pings from an active sonar buoy (which are generally dropped from helicopters doing ASW work), but it would probably be identified as a buoy and not a sub pretty easily.

Part 2) Movement
If you move too fast in the water, you make noise. As discussed earlier, going too fast both blinds you and makes you easier to detect. Thus, if you're trying to get somewhere in a hurry, you use what are called "Sprint and Drift" tactics. As it sounds, you first do a short sprint, and then you slow back down and listen for a while, before beginning your next sprint.

Another aspect I'll cover hear is the Thermocline, or layer. The thermocline is basically a wall between hot water closer to the surface and the cold lower water. It is difficult to detect targets on the other side of the thermocline, although nifty tactics are possible with keeping in or above the thermocline and having the sonar be dragged beneath it. Sprint and drift tactics when facing surface ships often are combined with changing which side of the layer. You do your sprints under it, and listen above it. It can work in sub on sub warfare as well.

Also a note, SSNs are fast as fuck if they need to be. We could quite possibly outrun a torpedo if it's locked on to us. If not outrun it, then keep ahead of it for long enough to outlast its limited fuel supply.

The planes one was fucking obvious, there's nothing else that could have been.
>>
>>41837870
Noisemakers exist mainly to decoy torpedoes. They don't go very far, so they'll know roughly where we are. Not a good idea. Now, if we were working in concert with another sub, it's a possibility. I would prefer that both of us not be heard at all. To be silent is to be untouchable.

"We" aren't in an SSN, and the anon who may or may not be you that is so helpfully describing sub tactics and warfare for us seems to know his shit, well enough to have served on one. Assuming he meant him and his crew when he said "we"/"us" was a perfectly logical train of thought.

Good for our planes, since it means basically no AA.
Bad for our carriers, because that means their entire being is focused around ship-to-ship combat

Good news is, if enemy subs are ww2 era or earlier, there is almost nil possibility they will be equipped to fight other subs, or even pose a serious threat to our own submarines. The only time a sub sank another sub IN ALL OF HISTORY was with the Venturer versus U-864 duel, and almost all of it was based on luck and hours of one boat stalking another:

Part 3) Armament
I don't know exactly what ship we're using but I'm going to assume they're Virginias.

The Virginia-Class Nuclear Submarine is armed with four torpedo tubes, which can be loaded with a variety of useful things, but the only one of any importance currently is our God and Saviour, the Mk 48 ADvanced CAPability torpedo. Seriously, this thing is amazing. It is a wire guided, meaning it drags a wire behind when launched, connecting it to the ship. So long as it is attached, we can give this thing course corrections as we see them. The Mk 48 ADCAP is equipped with a sonar system of its own, which has both passive and active modes. These are pretty good, and in a pinch you can actually use a Mk 48 ADCAP as an offboard sensor, transmitting the information gleaned back to the submarine. The Mk 48 ADCAP is a fast bugger, and can be run at different speeds, with higher speeds consuming fuel faster. It can probably get up to, if not over, 50 knots. I don't have range figures based on how fast it goes, but assume a range of around 25 nm. Note that this is not the range we should shoot at, as that means the other guy can turn around and outrange your torpedo.

The Mk 48 ADCAP has a huge warhead, more than enough to kill anything afloat, or submerged for that matter. Here's a video of one exploding beneath the keel of a target vessel from a few years back.
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=428_1216908004

Now what else can a Virginia-Class sub do? It can launch Harpoon missiles from the torpedo tubes, it's supposed to be able to lay mines through them(funnily enough the mines are really encapsulated torpedoes), and it also has 12 VLS cells.

It has room for 27 torpedoes or Harpoons or those CAPTOR mines, and a few more secret squirrel things.

They launch them out the torpedo tubes in a sleeve, which brings them upwards, and they breach the water at an angle. The engine fires, the sleeve parts, and off it goes. They might have brought them out of service right now, I'm a little sick to remember for sure.

“Bat One-One calling Goalie – buddy spike,” you say with annoyance.

“Solid copy,” comes the slightly raspy voice of the Navy geek. “Just had to verify. What's your ETA?”

“Ten minutes, give or take.”

“Step on it, Bat – we've got a gaggle inbound.”

You resist the urge to bite through your oxygen mask. “The hell you mean a *gaggle?*” The Arleigh-Burke he's sitting in has enough radar wattage to fry a flock of birds out of the air if it wants to – at closer ranges, not even abyssal fuckery can fool it.

“I mean there's too many of them to discriminate,” the operator tells you curtly. “*Over.*”

“Well, fuck,” you say in the privacy of your own cockpit, then key your mic. “Bat flight – military power and loosen up.”

It is a personal problem, but it's not uncommon. not everyone gets everything in 3 seconds first run through.
>>
Your ship leaps under your hand as you give her the gas, accelerating out of the cruise band and up to combat speeds. The seven other F-18 Hornets of Bat Flight drift into a looser formation; paring off into elements as they prepare for imminent combat. You flick your eyes towards the fuel gauge and squeeze your throttle lever nervously – even with tanker support and every trick in the book, your Hornets are really pushing their range to reach the Bonin islands with anything like decent combat time. You're coming in about as slick as you possibly can – six Sidewinders and the gun, with the three drop tanks left in the Pacific a few miles back. The Super Hornet might have better legs, but if you have to mix it up in a knife-fight, there's nothing better than the original article. And against abyssals, there's one simple rule for ensuring a kill: “Yes – closer still!”

Your first inkling of the battle ahead is the cloud of smoke over the horizon; the work of many heavy anti-aircraft guns thundering away into the blue. As you draw closer your radar begins to pick up intermittent contacts that hop and dance on the scope before vanishing. Switching to single-target-track manages to hold them for a little longer. Abruptly one of the tracks firms up solidly. Four seconds later it vanishes. The Burke's are going to work.

“Bat flight!” an unfamiliar female voice replies. “I have intruders in the weeds inbound at bearing zero-fo-war-two, range three miles! Intercept them!”

“Number?” you ask, but receive no reply – the mysterious air controller is already issuing new orders to another flight of CAP birds.

In SWQ we were fighting aircraft that had a massive thrust advantage over ours, letting them recover energy better than we could. This meant that the optimal tactic was to engage from above, gaining energy from gravity and using the built up speed to de-ass and set up for another run- the bounce.

Here we are facing almost literally the exact opposite situation.

Because if we bounce the enemy formation then there is a lower chance that we will break their formation. And as a result there is a higher chance that some of them will stay on course and get into torpedo range.

As for why everyone is choosing to bounce, it's because it's the result that was always chosen back in the days of SWQ because the aircraft that we used back then was a Widow, not a maneuverable fighter (which is what we are using now, in this section of the thread). Thus bouncing the enemy produced the best results when using that aircraft. The tradition of bouncing the enemy has transferred to SWQ related quests such as SW:89.

Remember those Hurricat fighters they used to use on atlantic convoys? The presence of a single fighter was enough to make whole waves of attacking torpedo planes nope the fuck out of there and drop their torpedoes early. A torpedo drop becomes dramatically less effective when the planes in formation can't get a good parallel drop off.

Anon, you must be joking.
Helldiver is successor to the SBD Dauntless, they aren't the same thing. Probably still the reason she got tense, though.
>>
>>41838804
First off, armament; we have heat seekers, and a backup gun.

Heat seekers don't need the advantage of a dive; in fact, an attack from above that sees the missile overshoot could have the missile slam into the seas at low altitudes before the guidance system reverses it and re-acquires a target.

A bounce can help our guns, but they should be only used once we're out of missiles.

Finally, we need to consider how much fuel we're using. A bounce will likely result in several high-speed manoeuvres and reverses in order to continue the engagement and stay on our targets' six, which will eat into our fuel. A same-altitude engagement, on the other hand, will allow us to do slow turns that preserve both our overall top speed and our fuel, and allow us to loiter.

Mind you, this is all on the assumption that the enemy is actually torp bombers only. If there are escorts, or it turns into a dogfight, then all bets are off.

Yes, until you realize that diving also gives us A FUCKTON OF SPEED which an F-18 doesn't need when it's chasing a non-jet aircraft.

That speed means overshooting. Overshooting means either hitting the breaks early, or having to manoeuvre to reacquire the targets. Either way, whatever fuel you might have saved with a dive is now burned again, and then some, in getting you back into the fight.

Aerial torpedo drops are all about timing and spacing. You have to get the distance to the target correct, and your drop will be well within maximum torpedo range to account for ships that turn away from you. You then have to make a deflection shot based on the size of the ship and how fast you *think* it's moving. You also have to account for all sorts of minute details, any one of which could mess up the attack. Crosswinds push your plane off course and even push against the torpedo AFTER you drop it. You have to make sure your drop height is not too high, and your speed not too fast. You even have to worry about the angle at which the torpedo enters the water or it could do things like strike bottom, bash it's nose in and run in circles, or even bob up out of the water like a rubber dolphin and hit you.

Having to deal with flak and angry CAP fighters makes everything 10 times harder. It's the difference between throwing a handful of chopsticks at someone while being attacked by bees and hitting them in the face with a rake. It's all about consistency.

Come on, GATE isn't that bad aside from the politics. At least they use real weapons with real effects. In Zipang, not only are the politics fucked up, the only weapons that work in real life like they do in the anime are the gun and the ASROC missile. Most of the things they do with the rest of the weapons are blatantly impossible (deflecting 18" rounds from the Yamato's main battery with Sea Sparrow missiles); requires variants that don't exist and are illegal under the Japanese constitution (laser-guided land-attack Harpoon missiles - SLAM is a land-attack Harpoon, but it's not laser guided, and the Japanese can't use them as they're "offensive weapons"); or plain requires more of them than the ship was said to carry at the start of the series.
