Names continue to be read off from somewhere above you, numerous other representatives descending the stairs to stand amongst the growing crowd-
Monsters, minor lords, merchants.

You are beginning to believe that the Archduke may have been slightly dishonest in his description of the event.

But for the time being, you put it out of mind.
You've met your aunt here, of all places, a cheery and probably mad woman who is entirely too like your father.

Which, you suppose, makes sense, what with her being his sister and all that.

Who, apparently, rather than becoming consumed with a desire for the knowledge of magic and history, really liked being a merchant.
You have the sneaking suspicion that there will be trouble sometime in the near future.

As for her companion- A bee princess, apparently, you don't actually know too much.

Your thoughts are interrupted by the sounding of a horn- And the final announcement.
"Archduke Darius The Third."

And with the lord of the city slowly walking down the steps, the so-called 'diplomatic meeting' begins.

>Well- You don't actually have any responsibilities. Chat with your aunt. (About?)
>Maybe you could learn about bees?
>Try and stand somewhere near the representatives of the southern city. Just close enough to be visible.

While you're most certainly interested in conversing with your aunt, you do, technically, have a purpose here.

"Ah- Aunt Auris? Do you mind if we move this conversation, yes?"
"Ooh, that's nice- No, wait, Call me Aunty."
"Aunty?"
"Yeah! I think I like that. Is the yes thing an Arachne thing?"

She follows you- And the bee follows her as you slide along the wall, till you can once more see the southern delegation over the heads of the people between you.

"It is, yes. From the way our language is."
"Spider language, huh? Could you teach me?"
"Probably... not? It is mostly hissing and clicking. I do not think you could make the right noises.
"Ah. Like the bees and buzzing, then? They talk with their wings, you know."

You glance at the young woman behind your aunt, and she flares her wings with a look of pride on her face.

"-I tried learning it once, but apparently I can only swear. Or say very rude things? Nobody would tell me what I'd said, afterwards."
"I see. Erics- Dad said you were a merchant? Or married a merchant?"
She nods, her grin widening just a bit.
"Yup- Damn, I still can't believe he had kids before me. Seriously.

"Um."
"Ah, I'm not quite so bad that I'd badmouth him in front of his daughter. I'll definitely tell you embarrassing stories, though."
"I think I would like that, yes."
"Haha- One time, he was playing hide-and-seek with the princess, y'know? Ah, hide-and-seek is a game. Where people hide. And other people try to find them."
"Yes."
"Anyway, we couldn't find him for a week."
>>
>>41829882
"What."
"Hee."
"There has to be more to that, yes?"
"I'll tell you later. Gotta have something to lure you into visiting!"
"No, I already said that I was planning on it?"

The bee next to the two of you is bouncing in place, wings flicking out as she rises, carrying her ever so slightly into the air.
You switch the topic before you get dragged any further into your aunt's pace.
"Ah- What about you, yes?"
"Me?"
"There are not any bees in the forest. I don't know anything about them."
"Haah? How can you not know about us? We are royalty!"
"Are you- Are ou talking about yourself, or bees?"
"Is it not clear?"

"No."

Your aunt interrupts before her companion launches into an explanation that you have no doubt would leave Nin taking notes.
"Bees live in giant hives, have Queens and princesses, and make honey. That's pretty much it.
"What! No! That isn't it at all!"
"I'm pretty sure that's all the important points, though?"
"It isn't! We- We have stingers!"
"You don't."

Its probably a good idea, not like we have a better chance until we happen to meet a monsterfolk priest, and the bees are probably the closest organized monsterfolk society.

Honestly, why do we need to talk about this with anyone? We already know from the reactions of monsters back home to our rapid growth and Eiryn's reaction to our blessings that we are totally ridiculous. We DON'T need to go around advertising this to everyone.
>>
>>41830787
She is a friend of the family (Our aunt) so it should be safe if we ask her to keep it secret.

It's also a good excuse to be a spider in the middle of a beefolk hive in future if we are going to ask someone older/more knowledgeable.
>>
>>41830823
I'm just not sure what exactly people are expecting from talking with the bee about it.
What do they think she'll have to say on the matter? I'm pretty sure it'll just be something along the lines of 'wow, that is ridiculous. I've never heard of anyone with so many blessings before' and that's all she'll be able to tell us.
>>
>>41830902
The odd thing isn't really Lyra having a lot, two of Lyras companions and two of her sisters also got several Blessings. Its certainly worth asking if it is more common for monsterfolk to get Blessings.
And she as monsterfolk living near humanoids is the best to ask for a comparison.
And it would be interesting to see how other mosnterfolk societies deal with deities.
>>
>>41830902
Wel, maybe we deserve some credit for being so awesome?
That aside, with some luck she may know some things about it that we don't. Or know someone who knows.
>>
>>41830965
We know that a group of elite bodyguards of the old kingdom all got blessings from a demigod of protection, it was lyra's first blessing.
>>
You barely manage to restrain yourself from playing the straight man- Nin's influence, even here.

"Well, I guess she's right. Bees are black and yellow. And have wings? Is that it?"
"No!"

Thinking about it- The princess is probably young, isn't she? Older than you, but still young? You'd have to ask.

"They've got that stuff on their legs and arms?"
"It is called chitin! And that isn't it at all!"
"Dangly things!"
"NO! What?"

You interrupt before it spirals out of control. Further out of control, anyway. They've already raised their voices, but not at the level of drawing attention yet, it seems.
Or, alternatively, people just know them.
You have a feeling this is a scene that's been on display on more than one occasion.

"I think she means your antennae, yes."
"Oh, is that what they're called?"
Your aunt has a smile like a cat- All too pleased with herself, and probably planning something.

The princess- Brij, you remember- grinds her teeth, glaring at your extended family.
You feel like you and the young bee have a lot in common.

For now, though-
"Mm. Brij, yes?"
"Wha? Oh. Yes."
"Can you tell me a bit about bees, then? What do you grow into?"
"They grow into bumble bees!"

"Thank you, aunty."
"Bees do not bumble! We are graceful!"
You both opt to ignore the giggling elf, the girl folding her arms over her chest with a sniff- at which point, you realize that she has another set of arms entirely.

"Oh- You have four arms?"
She nods, clearly proud.
"Of course! It is the sign of royalty!"
"How does that work?"
>>
>>41831087
She gestures with her second set- much smaller than her 'regular' arms, and formed entirely of chitin, they seem to protrude from her ribs.
"With these powerful limbs, I can strike and wield magic at the same time!"

You tilt your head.
Magic is... chanting and mana formation. And release.
You say as much.

Brij gets flustered quickly, sputtering and turning red until your aunt intervenes with a smile.
"The royalty- Queens and princesses, and the royal guard afterwards- They can sort of divide their attention, in a way?"
"Doing two things at once?"
"Yeah, that's the idea! And since they can defend themselves, even while casting, they're really strong as mages!"
"Because their concentration can't be broken?"
"You got it!"

The bee calms as you discuss her abilities, nodding along pridefully to your deductions.

The crowd around you shifts and moves, opening up as the archduke approaches.

I agree with you, it isn't really something that needs investigating. If anything, the less we know about blessings the better, if what Eiryn said was true. Otherwise knowing more about them might increase the chance of our future actions being construed as attempting to get blessings, which would lessen the chance of actually getting them.

They weren't bodyguards, they were a elite military unit that specialised in being the first line.
Though its unclear if all Ruby Widows were recruited into that unit, or if arachne in it all got blessed by the Demi-god of protection.

And thats sort of the point, if the Arachne had often enough members blessed by a specific deity they could form a entire military unit around it, maybe its more common for monsterfolk?
Or maybe certain deities like certain kinds of monsterfolk and have arrangements with them.

I can't imagine a Blessing being given just for joining a specific unit, so I'd say any Army Spiders that earned that Blessing got transferred into that unit.
>>
Why do I get the feeling that Brij is the mage our group has been needing?
>>
>>41831238
Ya, plus Protection is probably a pretty common blessing for people that are in the army and work to protect the citizens of the kingdom.
>>
>>41831151
We really have no idea how common these blessings are.

I'm pretty sure that the Ruby Widows were simply stronger variants of standard Widow, without any sort of blessing. (Though having one would obviously be a plus)

>I can't imagine a Blessing being given just for joining a specific unit,
My thought was more in the direction of them getting more often in situations earning them that Blessing due to being in a unit that specialises in protecting.
>>
>>41831285
I admit, sofar I took it as given that Ruby Widow Arachne are Ruby Widows because they have the Protection blessing, just like Lyra being Tyrant Arachne comes with the Ruler blessing, or Aria being Gem-Lord because she is a Half-Lord with the Gems blessing.

Its teue that might not be necessarily the case, but I'm fairly sure it is, everything seems to point into that direction.
>>
>>41831304
One thing though - it's been mentioned that trying for a blessing guarantees you don't get it. Being in a military unit kinda negates options. Many people aren't throwing themselves heart and soul into this thing, it's just their job.
>>
If it's a relatively common blessing, it could also be that only Ruby Widows were eligible to enlist for that role.
>>
Proper greetings!

Writing!
>>
>>41831377
>Being in a military unit kinda negates options
It really doesn't. They are unlikely to have joined a high risk military unit that specialises in protecting people unless they wanted to protect people.
And are therefore also likely to get into situations were they put themselves at risk protecting people.
>>
>>41831285
Judging by how evolution and the achievements you need to get to unlock variants, I'm fairly certain that we were a Ruby variant because we got a blessing from protection. Just like we were Forgesworn because we got blessing from Fire and Earth.
>>
>>41831377
Also if you aren't doing things under your own volition (following orders doesn't count), than what IS the significance of your actions? I mean in a military unit the only person who could really get any kind of blessing would be the commanding officer. Unless a soldier, by his own will, did something like run into a burning building to save a child.
>>
>>41831419
>Also if you aren't doing things under your own volition (following orders doesn't count)
I'm not sure why you think following orders doesn't count, thats a pretty big assumptiom to make, you still choose to put yourself at risk for that other person, you could still flee or whatever. No matter any orders, you still choose to do it.
Claiming acting on orders wouldn't count for Blessings seems pretty farfetched to me.
>>
I'm really amazed that the Ruby Widow thing is still on going and that we're not plotting a way to prevent Nin from figuring a way to have us abscond Brij into our group as our mage.
>>
>>41831419
I doubt it works that way, actions and intentions matter as far as I understand it, as long as that soldier protects someone, and has genuine personal desire to do so, then he can get the blessing, regardless of if someone happened to order him to do something he would have done anyway.
>>
>>41831419
>Also if you aren't doing things under your own volition (following orders doesn't count)
We know for a fact this is untrue, because we got the blessing for protecting our sisters a the waterfall, something Mom told us to do.

If you would do it ONLY because of the orders it wouldn't work, but thats something completly different.
>>
>>41831477
>and that we're not plotting a way to prevent Nin from figuring a way to have us abscond Brij into our group as our mage
Why would we want to prevent her from doing that?
>>
>>41831485
I'd need a word of god. Personally, I got the impression the act needs to be from you. Blessings are implied to be serious business. You don't get one with coercion, orders, faking anything, or being something that really, truly isn't you.
>>
>>41831107
>>Greet him properly.
>>
>>41831518
Thats different, mother wasn't with us, if mother was with us and threw us in front of sara it wouldn't count as protecting.
>>
>>41831541
The problem seems to be that you think if you happened to get orders for something that makes it somehow not "truly you". Which I see nop reason to assume.
You can have a personal desire to protect people, and get orders to protect people. There is no contradiction here.
Mom told Lyra to protect her sisters at the waterfall, she still got the blessing because she WANTED to protect her sisters, having gotten orders to do so didn't mystically invalidate her genuine desire.
>>
>>41831563
>if mother was with us and threw us in front of sara
Thats complelty different from what we are tlking about though. Obviously if you don't want to protect people, you don't get a blessing even if you protect people.

But what we are talking about is someone who wants to protect people, and gets orders to do so. And that someone would still get the blessing as far as I see it. I see no reason why he wouldn't.
>>
>>41831613
Obviously the way to keep people from getting blessings is by stalking them, and when they're about to do something, quickly tell them to do that thing they're about to do: they're being ordered to do it, therefore it doesn't count towards blessings.
>>
>>41831577
The difference is that if you disobey orders in any military, you get punished. Did you have a choice to protect said person? I'm not saying you can't be a soldier and not get a blessing, just that it doesnt make things more likely.
>>
>>41831669
And if Lyra disobeyed her mother in not protecting her sisters then she would have gotten punished. What's your point?
>>
>>41831669
>The difference is that if you disobey orders in any military, you get punished.
What do you think Mom would have done to Lyra if she wouldn't have protected her sisters?

>just that it doesnt make things more likely.
It sort of does, because as someone in a unit whos purpose it is to protect people, you are more likely to get into situations where you can act on your desire to protect people.
>>
>>41831709
>And if Lyra disobeyed her mother in not protecting her sisters then she would have gotten punished
Not really? Nia would have been disappointed and sad and angry, but we didn't have the threat of public disgrace or lashing or firing squad or what have you.
>>
>>41831722
I'd assume if we'd said no she would've gone herself or brought our other sister along, and been dissapointed with us. However the actual result wouldn't be that terrible.
>>
>>41831756
Nialla totally would have punishes her for not protecting her sisters, thats not even a question.
Not to mention disappointment from her would have been a pretty harsh punishment easily equal to public disgrace to Lyra.
>>
>>41831669
>Spider wants to defend their home and people of the Forest.
>Joins the army to do so.
>Is sent into dangerous situations and risks life to protect people.
>Does so willingly with pride in their heart because they believe protecting their home is the right thing to do.

And you think someone that chooses this lifestyle is LESS likely to get a protection based blessing? You'll have to explain your reasoning to me.
>>
>>41831766
>I'd assume if we'd said no she would've gone herself
Its about when we were already at the waterfall, and would have abandoned our sisters ran away or something.
You think Nialla wouldn't have punished us for that? She absolutely would have.

>Also if you aren't doing things under your own volition (following orders doesn't count), than what IS the significance of your actions? I mean in a military unit the only person who could really get any kind of blessing would be the commanding officer.
No, you're saying that being in the military makes your intentions invalid, and that someone who joins a unit to protect people because they want to protect people gets no blessings for doing so unless they do something they weren't ordered to do.

Because absconding and brainwashing royalty is bad no matter what.....although I wouldn't say no to her joining our group willingly we need a mage type.
>>
>>41831995
Hey now, no one said anything about brainwashing. Just absconding. Which is something to be legitimately concerned about.
>>
>>41831995
I'm torn between my irritation about toomany companions and too little attention to developing al of them, and my shameless desire for more cute insect girls to follow Lyra and possibly have blatant crushes on her
>>
>>41832069
It's Nin, her form of brainwashing is by far the most subtly evil.....by constantly referring to Lyra as a queen even Brij will start to believe it.
>>
>>41832080

We don't need to take her on board as a companion, but maybe she could teach Nin a little bit of magic. You never know, her form might be similar to Nin's.
>>
>>41832069
>>41832128
It's probably the Morale Shattering Stride of the Monster Lord that really does it.

>>41832238
I feel like Ezzy will be the mage, since she is the one lacking a niche of her own sofar.
>>
>>41832267
Would she cast normal sized fireballs or really tiny fireballs? Because if her magic isn't scaled down with her than she can be extraordinarily lethal, she could take cover behind anything and then strike back with attacks, she'd effectively be one of the more dangerous people in the party simply by mobility and damage potential alone.
>>
>>41832267
What are you talking about?....Ezzy's got one of the most important niches in our group!....She's our scarf.

>>
>>41832320
>>41832267

Nin has already showed magical capabilities. Also, Ezzy's advantage is already pretty significant in that she is small and very fast. If she develops camouflage, she'll be an incredibly effective scout. Failing that, she is the best scarf.

Nin has sofar shown only her healing, which is definitly not magic and closer to Lyras elemental manipulation.

And abilities as scout aren't very useful in a group with wolves harpies and a tremorsense spider.
>>
>>41832403
....you're right, now how do we turn her into a tiny gorgon scarf?
>>
>>41832411
In the wild, maybe, but in social settings her stealthy scouting could really shine.
Though not literally, I hope, as that would give away her position. So let's hope she doesn't follow Jin's example as far as evolutions go.
>>

>>
You turn to face the incoming lord, and ready yourself to greet him properly.

Oh.

You have no idea how to greet him properly.

Of course, you know how to greet people. It's just a matter of hello or hi and exchanging names and the like.
The issue is that you don't know the appropriate way to greet an archduke at some sort of trade meeting/party/political whatsit.

You take a half step back, which is, essentially, 3-4 human steps back, dropping yourself behind your companions and paying close attention to how other people greet him.

Some people bow as he passes. Some people exchange words. Some people aren't greeting him?
This isn't helping.

He pulls up before the three of you- Aunt Auris gives a half bow, hand to her shoulder, and Brij offers her own hand- Which he kisses lightly before saying something in a low voice.

Alright- Alright. It's a matter of comparative standing, then? That's easy.
Wait, no. You're supposed to be pretending to be- Crap. Is it actual standing? Pretend standing?

No. No. Calm down. All you have to do is not yell something stupid like 'HI I'M LYRA' and everything will be fine.

The archduke steps up towards you, and you freeze, an awkward expression locked onto your face- He smirks lightly at your jittery features, and tugs your hand down to kiss the back.

That wasn't so hard.

Oh gods, everyone is looking at you now. And talking. Everyone is talking and staring-
You swallow hard.

Brij interrupts.
"Lord Darius, you're acquainted with miss Lyra?"
"Lady Brij. I invited her personally."

Your aunt is glancing between the two of you rapidly, trying to puzzle out... something, apparently.
"You know my niece?"
"Your... Wait, Erics'?"
"Haha, right?"

The duke takes a moment to actually stare at you, then at your aunt. And then, in a very low voice-
"I will be completely honest with you- I have no idea how any member of that family ever married, let alone had children."
"Rude!"
"You know my father?"
>>
>>41832603
He shrugs.
"We've sent fire mages to the family's holdings for years. It's one of their 'exports' so to speak."
"Huh."

You're about to ask another question when the crowd parts again- this time agitated, voices being raised across the hall.
There's a man there- wild eyed, clothing amiss and clearly angry.
The priest from the southern city-

"Cease this! All of this!"
The duke's tone takes a sudden and very dangerous drop- and the people near the now pointing priest immediately step away.
"Excuse me?"

"This farce! This- this absurd play with your misshapen garbage!"
"Watch your tongue- Do you think to insult my guests? Order me in my own city?"
"That you've dragged some player into this meeting is reason enough! There is no queen in the forest! Nothing but trash and remnants, squabbling vermin crawling across dirt and stone! There was nothing left in the wake of our passing, No! Nothing there to begin with! This girl, this noone, this monstrosity-"

The archduke is red with anger, fists clenched at his sides- The people around you are sneering, glaring, all directed at the so-called priest. And you-
You feel angry. Upset. At the slights to your home, at each and every word-

Was it to intimidate? Maybe I forgot, that hadn't been my impression. I thought her presence was just suppose to throw them offbalance.

If the duke just wanted to threaten them, he has the resources for that himself. Lyra's presence is to prove a point about the city's stance regarding monster races, and how the 'human empire' will not find their zealotry to be welcome here.
>>
>>41832965
It kinda fits the bill though.
Then again we had the STERN GLARE since we were a kid. Kinda glad we got to use it again.
>>
In there defense, they did sort've wreck most of the civilization, although to say they glassed the place and purged it of all monsterfolk is definitely a stretch. Really all they did was turn a centralized civilization into several autonamous civilizations. The only groups that really got fucked over were the lizard folks and the werewolves, and the lizard folk aren't that bad off either, in fact with how lizards work they're probably better off now than ever.
>>
>>41832973
>I thought her presence was just suppose to throw them offbalance.
By being a intimidating giant spider, the intimidation was the point of it all.
Sure he could have done it by other means, but those would have looked like he "wanted" to intimidate him, this way its all completly not his fault and all theirs that they start shit with the giant spider.

>>41832999
>In there defense, they did sort've wreck most of the civilization
Not quite, in reality the city was already falling apart before they arrived, they just sped up the process.
>>
>>41832999

>>
>>41833080
I think he refers to them not counting into Lyras Ghoul Achievement "Blood and Flesh", though I personally assume points into achievements just don't carry through evolutions.
>>
>>41833118
Technically the queen kicked the sandcastle over onto them?
She's the one who smashed the city.
>>
>>41832999
Actually they did very little. Their army was just the straw that broke the camels back.

The separate races has been squabbling and slowly pulling apart for years. A few had already broken away from the union. The Lizards had actually declared war against the Spiders (and lost. Badly).

Then the human army came.... everyone was saying how they'd defend THEIR lands but not the lands of others... blah blah blah.

So the Queen saw it wan't going to hold together. Told the last loyalists to abandon the city and evacuate the path of the army. She'd take care of them herself.

She gave them a clear shot to the city. They marched right in... and none ever left.
>>
>>41833118
>Okay noted, so long story short the human empire basically kicked over a sandcastle five minutes before high tide and managed to get completely wrecked doing so.
Yes, that's about it.

If you want to really push the metaphor, they came in stopming on the castle and got swept up by the wave.
>>
>>41833118
Its possible the strain the empire put economically on the forest might have played a role into it falling apart though, we don't really know enough details to truly understand how the empires war against the forest played into the cities fall, only that they certainly weren't solely responsible for it, since the forest races could have always rebuild if they had wanted to.
>>
>>41833180

Except at no point did the Archduke express that. Closest thing was when he did say that
>"I want to see that smarmy little asskisser shit himself in front of a spider!"
but right before that, was the bit about putting your opponent offbalance. Intimidation can do that, at least for a bit, but it also tends to draw lines in the sand, encourage defensive or aggressive posturing. And _that_ would be against the stated goal.

>>41833249
With Lyra's luck, Nin probably flew herself up to the castle at some point and is now pressed against a window looking in.

Blush Hard 2: Blush Harder?

You glare, six black, glimmering eyes narrowing in sync.
He stiffens, trembling, but his hand remains steady- thumb held tightly over clenched fingers, one pointed accusingly towards your face.

"Do you think we would stay silent! That we would be af-fraid?! You and yours- You are nothing! The forest is nothing! We will put it to the torch once and for all, and no false royalty wi-"

There's a sudden and violent crack-crunch.
Not from the duke, or the priest, or any guests.
That loud and ominous noise comes from you. From your brow.

A spike of chitin sits above you, hanging in the air as though it belonged there. And before anyone can properly discern what it is, what is going on-

Another sound- This time the hiss of a flame igniting, the subtle explosion of air suddenly consumed by a burning arc.
Your crown blazes into existence, casting a red glow all around you as you look down on the priest- Now silent and immobile, his hand drifting down as he gapes, open-mouthed.

Not enough. This isn't enough. How dare he? Threaten the forest? Your home? Your friends and family, and all the others who reside there?

One leg comes off the ground, lifted reverently as your chitin clicks at the movement. Your expression stays the same- Eyes locked on his, lips pulled taut as you scowl.

You bring your leg down before him, tapping it to the ground, a sharp clack resounding as it touches the tiled floor.

And the earth answers.

Just a tremor. That's all it is. All you need.
For less than a single second, the world quakes.

The priest drops to the floor, whimpering incoherently as you release your crown, the light flaring up before it vanishes into the aether.

"Maybe he is prejudiced against elves, yes." You answer glumly.
"What?"

You gesture to your ears. And Auris.
"My aunt, yes."

Mostly, this just confuses the people around you.

The archduke returns once the Southern merchants have successfully carted off the priest- Apparently the man is near catatonic now.
You're too caught in your own despair to think of him.

A bird is a bird. If it talks that just means it can directly tell you that it's a jerk.

For all other winged creatures, avian, chiropteran, or arthropod there's a "innocent until proven bird" system in place. It also applies to things with birdlike parts. Feathers, beaks and so on.

Brij is wearing what could only be described as an imperious expression.

"I shall accompany you, then!"
The duke shrugs, his smile slipping free.
"As it suits you, Milady."

_________________________________________________________

You're safely back in his office minutes later- The archduke reclining on his sofa once more, and the bee reclining on you.
You want to cry.

"I must admit, when I requested your presence to keep them off balance- I hardly expected them to make threats in my own home. You have my apologies."
"That isn't- I am not about to blame you for anything someone else has done, yes?"
"Oh, thank you."
"Rather, If you could just forget everything about today-"

He laughs aloud.
"Forget a spider shaking the earth with her fury, clad with a crown of fire?"
"Yes. Specifically, forget that."
"Miss- Aside from the fact that you were seen by half the nobles of the continent, servants and maids saw you as well, you know."
"But... won't they keep quiet about the things they see in your castle?"
"Absolutely not."

Maybe you could make it back to the forest before Nin finds out.

"I don't understand why you would want people to forget. The Queen was greatly respected!"
"I am not the Queen! I am not a Queen! I am not anyone, yes!"
The duke is laughing again as you frantically try to defend yourself against the bee.

"You don't actually believe that, do you?"
"Hah?"
"That you're noone?"
"I am not anyone important. I am just an arachne."
"You're an arachne related to elvish nobility, followed by nearly every race from the forest. Even without the crown, people would be convinced. With it..."
"But I'm not the Queen!"

He shrugs.
"Maybe not for much longer."

You wave him off, unwilling to listen any longer.
"No more, no more, yes. This is going to cause trouble, won't it?"
"With who?"
"The city? The southern city. They were already threatening to attack."
"A load of nonsense. They haven't the men to mount anything of that size. And besides-"
He grins again, predatory.

"Ah, you don't even realize it, do you?"
"What?"
"They lost the war when the earth rumbled before, you know? And here's another spider, tapping her foot and calling calamity. I wouldn't be surprised if they hid down there for another century before daring to come north."

Its a racial superiority thing they come from a part of the continent where monster tend to be weaker, so they go the idea of humans being superior to monsterfolk. Slight correction. They originated from another continent populated by relatively weak monster races, became the dominant power, and convinced themselves they were the 'master race'.

That is not actually said anywhere as such, it says they are "from the other side of the world", which back when the paste was written probably just meant the continent, especially since orcs are directly noted to be from another continent and pissed off when they saw the human supremacy bullshit going on.
So the human supremacy thing actually comes from this continent.

Pretty sure you got something mixed up there,

In the paste it says the human empire is "from the other side of the world" and the human cpital city in the plans is "halfway across the world" which makes it pretty clear "world" means the continent, if you look at the map and see that the ruins are in the middle of the continent.

Seranthis is totally still more powerful than we are and any job that kept Seranthis busy for centuries and even the queen couldn't solve permanently isn't really something anyone can take care of in an afternoon either.

Odds are he's actually dealing with an entire race of nasty beasties that he is strong enough to keep from getting numerous enough to pour out of the earth but cannot genocide because that's much easier said than done for any species and goes especially for gribblies nasty enough to require Seranthis' attention.

You make up your mind, pushing your thoughts aside and setting yourself straight again.
Sighing won't change anything. You need to move forwards.

"Sir? May I ask a favour?"

The archduke raises an eyebrow.
"Go ahead."
"Could you pass word to the dwarves for me? I am... something of an amateur smith, yes. I'd like to talk to them mroe about that sort of thing, when I have the chance."

"I see. I'll have a letter passed to them- They'll be in town a while longer, as well."
"Mm. That is good."
"Are you leaving, then?"
"I am planning to hide under the sheets in the guild, yes."

He chuckles.
"I don't imagine it will do you any good."
"It works. There are surprisingly few people willing to trouble a sleeping spider."
"No doubt."

He stretches a scarred hand towards you, shaking your own firmly, then offering a small bag of gold.
"For your work here today- You've done more than asked. And likely, you've improved relations with the forest for many nations."
"Inspiring terror is improving relations?"
"They saw the strength of the people who live there. They already know what manner of things the forest can produce... They may even send diplomats to the woods."
"It would do them little good. There is noone to talk to."

He shrugs.
"All the same- It means the forest will be that much more visible to the world."
He rubs his head with a sigh.
"Of course, it also means that many more people will go and get themselves killed in the woods."
"As long as they visit the village first, it should be fine, yes."
"Perhaps."

You nod, and make to stand.
"Thank you for this, yes."
"Mm. I look forward to seeing you again, Miss."
The maid escorts you out the door, but-

"Brij, what are you doing?"
"What does it look like? I am following you."
"Why?"
"Of course, from royalty to royalty."
"I am not royalty, yes."

"Hmpf. You say that, but... Well, When I become Queen, such connections will be truly valuable. So for now, let us cooperate."

As the maker of the map, I have no words to express the rage I feel at your paint desecration...

Why would she pencil [Elflands] under Elflands?
The Elflands are the Elflands after all.

Anyways, good night and thanks for running!

How irritated will Aria be once people start asking her about her sister the spider queen?

Sorry about that, man.
To be fair though, I'm pretty sure Lyra did the exact same thing to any of her maps that weren't pre labeled.

And then she added Elflands to the Elflands of any map that was prelabled.

Thanks for playing!

Aria is more likely to join a human group, I think. Monster adventurers aren't quite so common.

Familiars fall into two categories- Sentient and non-Sentient, the latter being something like simplistic elemental spirits, the former being things summoned or bound. It gets a bit weird. Sara might get herself one, especially if she sees it in a book.

You're a giant spider. You bite things.

Mom will find out. Moms always find out.

Nin And Brij would likely get along, given their propensity for flamboyance. Of course, ceaselessly one-upping each other is equally likely.

Maybe?
If dancing is arachne courtship, and it's done by the males, wouldn't an all male dance troupe be the equivalent of spider strippers?
