Ok, so, news.

Well, granddad just left for the ER. It's not his heart, which is good, since that's our major worry with him these days, but if I have to bail out... well, you know why.

This is, most likely, our last regular Tuesday run. Like, ever. We'll move to a later Thursday run starting next week. I'll probably put up the OP at 1900-2000 EST, give or take. I don't actually get out of class till around 17, which also happens to be right around rush hour. We'll see how that pans out. Hopefully we're not quite so boned next semester, but we'll have to see.

You'd headed back into the house only to almost step on Rufus, lying unhappily by the back door. He's not allowed outside- while neither you nor the colonel is worried about him potentially attacking people, you are worried about him designing a way to get at the food. The perils of an overly smart dog are many, you reflect.

Fortunately, he just sort of looks up at you as you walk in and makes a whuffing noise, a kind of half-interested bark that dies before it's really ever given voice. He sets his head back down on his paws, eyes watching you as you step over him and head upstairs to get Anya.

Originally the house was designed with four bedrooms, along with a pair of bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. The colonel had another bathroom added a couple years ago, along with another bedroom downstairs, and a small den- he'd expected his daughter to take it when she moved back in after his wife had died of cancer, but apparently Caroline had decided to reclaim her room upstairs.

1/2
>>
Anya's moved into it, seemingly happy in the more remote room by herself. There's not much in the way of furniture- she'll be spending a few nights on a simple pallet made of blankets, though she's assured both you and the colonel she'll be fine on them. She's had much, much worse sleeping arrangements- naked on concrete- she told you, after he left. You ground your teeth at it, knowing you couldn't do anything to undo that.

She's found the reading nook in the room- a bay window with a bench- and is sprawled out on it, leafing through the manual for the lightning's Allison engines. For a second, you think, she looks... well, normal. Like just another teenage girl reading a book in her room.

She looks up when you knock on the doorframe.

"Hey Anya, are you hungry?" You ask- her room doesn't really have a good view of the pad, just the backs of the hangars and the trees nearby.

She makes a face, thinking, then eventually nods, marking her place in the manual with a strip of paper. "I could eat." She admits, standing up.

It's one of those rare moments alone with her- the girls are outside with Slider, and Katya is nearly half the globe away. She doesn't smile, but she pauses near the door to look at the room- largely empty though it is.

[] Ask her what she thinks, just about the whole situation.
[] Ask her if she likes the room.
[] Ask her if she's ok with staying here still- it's ok if she's changed her mind!

We can give suggestion or places on what she can do with it? Find her a hobby?
>>

Sure! Write ins are, as always, more than welcome.
>>
>>41813292
I think her hobby is plane engine maintenance right now, which is probably as good as it will get for the time being. It's something she is familiar with after all.
>>
>>41813344
True but something for her room in the mean time.

>>41813051
Maybe suggestion some books on airplane or aircraft design, history of the wright brothers.

Maybe model planes for her to work on, when she can't work on planes in the hanger due to rain or bad weather.
>>
I just realized that there's a really REALLY good chance that when we get back to the front that Konnie will try to join our unit as a political envoy.

Last time she saw us we had neither the girls or the girlfriends...

I think the word "interesting" fails to capture the scale of the resulting cluster-fuck that would happen, Frank escaping the base would look like the end of the BR comic.

[x] Ask her what she thinks, just about the whole situation.

"So what do you think?" You ask gently, causing her to shake her head.

"I don't know." She says, after a moment. "Everyone seems so nice, and-" She stops herself just short of whatever she was about to say, shaking her head again. "I don't know."

Well, that's as close as she's ever come to opening up to you, so it's something, at least. "You looking forward to staying here?" You ask, trying a different tack.

She pauses again, then nods, slowly.

"Think you've got the trouble with the lightning figured out?" You ask, reaching out and not quite putting a hand on her back to guide her out of her room and towards the door.

She nods. "I think so, but I need them to try and start it to be sure." She answers, making a face. "this would be easier if machines could just tell us what was wrong with them."

Well, you think, if she were Merlin, they could. Though that's really not fair- so far as you've been told, Merlin is uniquely gifted with machines in general, and even though they all share the same broad talent, from what you've been told, she's apparently far more willing to use it, too. The girls hardly ever even summon their familiars, from what you've seen- in fact, you've only ever seen them once, during the test in Germany.

1/2
>>
She pauses to pat Rufus' head when you head out back, the smells of grilled hamburgers causing him to whine plaintively. "Be good, Rufus." You say- he'll get his own burgers in a few minutes, but he has to be patient. He fixes you with a short look before settling his head back down on his paws.

Outside, some of the people are already eating. Meanwhile, the girls and Slider are apparently waiting for you to rejoin them, their food sitting in front of them. Anya takes the open seat next to Lilya, leaving your place next to Stasya, perhaps wisely, unoccupied.

"So I didn't catch your name." The man across from you says to Anya, who looks up and mutters something- probably a response, but it's almost impossible to hear. He grins and shakes his head.

"You're gonna have to speak up!" He says. "I been riding bikes too long, bit hard of hearin!"

"Anya." She says again, a bit louder this time.

"Anya. S'a pretty name. Call me Bear." He says, holding out a hand. "The colonel-" He doesn't pause, or even seem to notice the tiny flinch the girls give at the title- "Tells me you're a mechanic?"

She nods.

"Good! not enough of us around. You think you could give me a hand with that lightning after we eat? It's been bothering me since we got it, maybe you've got an idea on it." He says.

Anya looks over at you, looking like she's asking for your permission.

[x] Nod at her- it's a gentle push, but if she's really going to be happy here, she's going to need friends.

You nod subtly at her- she really needs to make friends here, and you can't imagine the colonel having anyone here that you wouldn't want to be friends with yourself.

She turns back and nods at the biker, who's grin gets slightly bigger. "Good!" He says, happily. "We can get the colonel in there too, give us a hand. The old boy may not look like it, but he can fix jus about anything."

She nods again, looking up as one of the CAF guys puts a plate in front of her, already loaded with a burger, some pasta salad, beans, and some potato chips. There's more, of course, but since you both got to the tables later, your plates were made for you- yours is identical to hers, while the girls seem to have gone for fruit salad instead of the beans, and Slider didn't get any chips.

People seem to come and go as you eat- most of them just to say a few words and shake your hand. You take a few pictures as well, though there's not as many of those as you expected. Still, you're able to enjoy yourself, even if you do pretty quickly find yourself busy telling stories and not eating.

Anya finishes her meal about the same time as Bear, and they both get up and go find the colonel, who heads to the hangar with them.

Meanwhile, as you finish, Slider stands up, the girls watching her as she collects the plates. "You ought to go say bye to Anya." She says, leaning in towards you. "We need to go, leave's almost up and they trusted me to keep you from going AWOL"

>>
You nod, standing up, with Lilya and Stasya following suit. The three of you walk into the hangar, where there's a bit of a crowd. Inside, you notice that Anya's summoned her familiar, and that the troublesome engine nacelle of the lightning is bathed in a pale blue light as she perches above it with Bear, while the colonel attempts to get it to turn over.

"See?" She says, pointing with a finger at something out of your line of sight. "It's sparking. I think that part of the wiring harness is bad."

"We musta replaced that thing fo or five times now." Bear responds. "No way they were all bad, hell, I fabbed that last one myself."

"Really? Maybe it's something else." Anya says, looking up to see you. She nods at you, but doesn't get down, even when she notices Stasya and Lilya are with you. "Can I have a minute?" She asks Bear, indicating you and the girls- he laughs and nods.

"And next time don ask me!" He says, still laughing.

She walks over, not dismissing her familiar- you wish you knew what type of spider it was supposed to be, but, while you don't necessarily hate spiders, you're kind of ambivalent towards them, and haven't really paid much attention. "So I guess this is it?" She asks.

[x] Just for now, we'll be back before you know it.

"Just for now." You say, as she hugs her sisters and steps back. "We'll be back before you know it."

She nods. "And Katya?"

"I'll talk to her, see if we can't arrange something but remember-" You start, but she nods again, stepping forward to give you a hug- brief, but still.

"I won't expect it." She says. "But thank you."

"And you have our contact number via Admiral Nixon's office." You say. "If anything happens or you change your mind, no matter where we are, we'll get the call through his people."

She nods again.

Slider in as the colonel climbs down out of the cockpit of the lightning to shake your hand again. "Take care of Rufus, make sure he doesn't cause too much trouble for the colonel, ok?" You say, and she nods a third time. You can't be sure but you think those are tears forming in the corners of her eyes.

"Let me know if you need anything out of us." You say to the colonel quietly. "I owe you big for this."

He looks back over his shoulder as Anya climbs back on top of the engine nacelle to straddle it, nodding her head at a question from Bear and wiping at her eyes with the back of a hand.

"Nonesense, sir." He says. "Ah suspect you've lent us quite the mechanic, we'll be glad to have her as long as you'll let us."

"Just keep in mind her history isn't the best." You say. "She may have some quirks and-"

The colonel holds up a hand. "Ah'm well aware, sir. We'll see to it she's treated properly." He grins. "Maybe even spoiled a bit."

You laugh. "Good. Just don't go too overboard, I don't have nearly the money you do."

He laughs, shaking your hand again. "Have a safe flight back, young sir." He says, pointedly not saying anything about not spoiling her.

1/2
>>
You wave at her on the way out of the hangar, and she returns it halfheartedly. You can't say you don't understand why- it must be hard for her to have been reunited with her sisters, just to have to leave them again. Still, at least here you know she'll be treated at least as well as, if not better than, she would be in England- the simple fact is that she's more or less living with the one guy you know who could really spoil a pilot.

The four of you pile into your borrowed bronco, eventually turning it back in at the motor pool at Halsey field. Waiting for you there is a slate gray C-20, waiting to take you back to Europe. You all settle in for a long flight- you're the only passengers aboard the bird as it takes off from the post and turns east, climbing to altitude. It lands once, taking on fuel, then continues across the Atlantic. Stasya settles herself half-in and half-out of your lap, her legs curled into a ball on her chair while she sleeps.

Behind you, Slider and Lilya sleep, leaning into each other. While Slider is bigger, Lilya's at just the right angle to support her with her own slight weight, propping her up. For you, however, the flight is long and fairly boring- you don't actually get to sleep until you're over Iceland.

You wake up when the wheels kiss the pavement at RAF Northolt, yawning and stretching as the jet taxis to it's spot on the pad, near a parked sedan. Wendy waits next to it, alone.

She immediately moves to take your bags when you finally start down the ramp- you've got your bag on your back, while you've got Stasya's slung below it, dangling by a strap, while you carry Stasya, who's still asleep.

"Wait a sec, Wendy." you say, depositing Stasya in the car and gently closing the door. "Rachel and Lilya are still asleep up there, I'll need a hand with their bags."

"Righto." Wendy responds. "How was the trip?"

[x] It went well, I think she's pretty happy there.

"It went well." You say, turning to head back up the stairs of the C-20. "I think she's pretty happy there."

"That's good." Wendy says, nodding. "No trouble from her sisters?"

"None." You shake your head. "But I don't think they'd have said anything anyway. Any trouble here?"

"None." She echos you. "I've furnished your apartments, per your orders. Miss Katya and Miss Tabitha are currently staying in her apartments. They'd hinted the sleeping arrangements may change when you arrive."

"The rest of the squadron?" You ask. "Merlin?"

"Miss Wells is staying with Major Sakamoto at the post here. Most of the other girls have gotten their own lodging in the city. Rosalie is in Paris." She says.

"What's the word on the cease fire?" You ask.

"Peace negotiations between NATO and Putin's faction started today." She says, her eyes betraying her happiness. "So far there isn't any other news, but it's expected to go quickly."

"Good." You respond, nodding. "Here, you get Lilya, I'll get Rachel."

She nods, reaching out to scoop up the sleeping girl and carry her down the flight stairs, clearing the way for you to do the same with Rachel. She makes a face and murmurs something in her sleep, then nuzzles her face into your chest, all without waking up.

You situate her in the middle seat- the girls seem to gravitate towards her as soon as you do, leaning against her, while she simply leans back, her head resting on the back of the seat.

"So everything's smooth here, then?" You ask, getting into the passenger seat on the left- you look around for a second before you remember, right, Britain.

She nods. "Quite. Miss Tabitha has requested I deliver you directly home, but I imagine you're hungry- would you like to stop somewhere and eat?"

[x] Yeah, actually, that sounds great.

You nod, and your stomach grumbles in agreement, causing you both to laugh. "Yeah, that sounds great. Know anyplace?"

She nods, turning right and into town. "There's a wonderful little pub nearby, I ate there when I was at RAF Northolt." She smiles. "The owner was a widower, you see, his wife had been a witch during the war. She went down over the channel. But he always served witches free there, in her memory, so I could afford to eat there."

"You couldn't afford to eat anywhere else?" YOu ask.

She shrugs. "Not often. The paymaster had trouble making sure my pay got to me on time, so I was often broke. They did after I was transferred into the squadron here, too, until the US Navy took over my pay. I haven't had to worry about it since then, though I'm often too busy to eat at pubs anymore."

"If you want some time off-" You start, and she shakes her head hard enough to cause the car to swerve a bit.

"Oh, no no! not that at all. I'm quite happy with all the work." She says hastily. "Quite happy. Everyone has been so nice to me, I'd be just terrible if I didn't do something for everyone."

"That doesn't mean you need to work yourself to death for us, Wendy." You remind her. "We're your friends, not your masters or whatever. If you want some time off, take some."

She shakes her head again. "I don't want time off. At least not right now." She pauses. "But I do have a rather large favor to ask of you." She pulls into a small lot near a fairly small building- not much bigger than a two car garage back home, all told.

[x] Whatever it is, we'll get it done for you.

"Whatever it is," you say as she puts it into park, "We'll get it done for you."

"Well... " She says, looking embarrassed. "I'd like to stay with you all after the war, too."

You pause. "Like- as- I mean, I don't think Rachel would go for it.."

She turns lobster red. "Oh no no no! Not at all like that, no." She says shaking her head. "It's just that... I'm assigned to miss Tabitha for the duration, but I'll be expected to return after a peace treaty is signed."

She hesitates. "I- I don't want to."

"So you want to stay with spellcaster?" you ask.

She nods. "If I can, but if I can't... Miss Tabitha and Miss Katya both said you may need some help around the house and I thought maybe-"

"That maybe you could stay with us as our Housekeeper or something?" You ask.

She nods again. "If it's not too much bother-"

"What all would we have to do?" You ask- for some reason, you doubt she'd be returning to a RAF that was appreciative of her work with VF-3.

"Well..." She says, pausing. "One way is for miss Tabitha or miss Katya to approach the crown coven and request my services in perpetuity."

"Meaning?"

"Meaning they'd be asking the crown to give me to another coven, giving up all claims to myself or my talents and so on... My family isn't well thought of, and it's not as if we're particularly outstanding as witches, the few of us that there are have never been anything but average."

"So that's possible." You say, noting how much like horse trading it seemed like.

She nods. "I'm free to leave, of course, but there could be difficulty for everyone if I 'go rogue' as it's known. The coven can be rather difficult to deal with when one wants to go against them."

1/3
>>
"I'm sure." You say. "What are some of the other ways."

"As guardian, you can make a case that it's in my best interest." Wendy says. "I'm not sure how you'd do that, but as long as you were convincing enough, that's all that would be necessary. The coven would retain all rights-"

"What, exactly, do you mean by rights?" You ask, baffled. "Like, they could take your kids or something?"

She shakes her head. "Oh, no. Nothing like that. That would be barbaric!"

"So what's it mean?" You ask, reaching back to gently shake Rachel awake.

"A record of myself and all my abilities would remain in the coven archives. All my strengths, weaknesses, my talent, everything." She says.

"That doesn't sound that major." You point out. "I mean, wouldn't they do that anyway?"

She shakes he head. "No. The laws governing these things go back centuries, maybe longer. Witches were incredibly valuable in the old days, we were like royalty. A witch marrying into another country would often have to swear to never make war against her home country."

"So if she did that, why would anyone care if there was a record of what she could do?" You ask.

2/3
>>
"Because it was considered a sign of mistrust. A witch who's recorded- well, witches have weaknesses, too. If you know what it is, it's scarcely harder to defeat her that it is to defeat a normal person." She says. "So it was seen as a slight upon the other nation, a political snub."

"And I take it it's a slight upon the witch as well? Calls her honor into question?"

She nods. "I should expect it, were I to leave, but... " She looks down at her feet. "I'd rather not have it hanging over me. It can make it hard for a witch in her new country too if it's known her home did that to her."

"I see." You say. "Any other way?"

She shakes her head. "Not really, I'm afraid. If miss Tabitha were to exert the influence she could have as the last descendant of the Romanov dynasty, she could perhaps require the coven to transfer me to her service as part of repayment of past debt, but that could take years to prove."

"What are we talking about?" Rachel asks, through a yawn.

"Oh, nothing." You say with a grin. "We've got it sorted out. You hungry?"

"I could eat a horse." She says, yawning again.

"Would you have to unhinge your jaw?" You ask.

"I'll unhinge your-" She doesn't finish the sentence.

"Unhinge papa's what?" Stasya asks, curious.

"His... uh... " Rachel flounders.

And you laugh. Thank god for your daughters.

All I will say is that Stasya and Lilya, and even Anya, were treated MUCH better than Raikov. They were considered valuable assets for VDNI testing so excessive abuse was highly discouraged.

Raikov was Volgin's right hand witch so he could do practically anything he wanted with her.

And that's it for tonight!

Again, this is probably our last regular Tuesday run. We'll be running on THURSDAY from here on in, starting, probably, around 2000 EST. I know that's kind of late, but I don't actually expect to get home until 1800 or so, so that gives me some time to eat and shower and that sort of thing after school. If we're still running by next semester, we'll adjust accordingly.

I've been pretty tied up working on some supplementary KCQ stuff (surprising absolutely no one, I'm sure), and I've been really poorly managing my time, so I'm sorry for that. I'll have that sorted by next week, promise.

Anyway, that's it for the evening, so we'll be back at our new regular time next Thursday! so till then, guys as always, hope you enjoyed and cheers!

>>41819913
I'm a Sliderfag, if we limit things to the big three.

I mostly have no interest in writing the Slider or Katya pieces because people keep asking about it, but there are other things. The big one is a lack of personal interest in it. I'm genuinely not very motivated to write the characters dealing with 'sharing' the Fronk anymore. Like, I could play up whatever emotional feelsy bullshit in the stories like I usually force in there, but it still feels kinda hollow cos at the end of the day, he'll just get passed around to the next girl in line.

In a way I actually regret even writing the Ice piece. I'd delete it but then some faggot in these threads and on IRC would doubtlessly screech about muh reputation or something.

There's that and I'm kinda burning out on witches in general. Ogawa was gonna be longer than it is right now, closer to Rollercoaster length, but I'm looking at ways to cut it short and end it in a reasonable place. Whatever Ghost and Merc decide to do with those folks at that point is up to them. I'm not a QM, just a writefaggot.
