Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross-country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain wacky powers and establish yourself as a landmaster.

You’re currently in Vancouver, meeting up with Roger Fragonfield, a Canadian guy who also happens to be a landmaster. After fending off a weird mask thing sent from the Golden Serpent, he’s finally decided to stop being Mysterious McGee and open up a little. Turns out his dad knew yours? And that he’s half alien? So that’s a thing.

Anyway, maybe a teamship with Roger wouldn’t totally suck. Apparently you both have some issues and you both have cool friends, so you should be able to form some kind of landmaster training program for kids or something stupid like that. You know, as long as he quits pestering you so much about how bad it is your dad died.

---

It’s kind of funny you’re getting sympathy. People usually just take people dying for granted and never talk about it. “It was a long time ago, but it was kind of hard,” you tell Roger. “And I’ve got a bunch of Hallows watching my back now. Things aren’t all hard all the time. The real thing that actually’s got me mad is how your puppet mask pal guy fits into the whole deal.”

Roger nods. “He’s an agent of the Yellow King,” he explains, “and the Yellow King is a landmaster. I’m not exactly sure on specifics, but his territory out in the Pacific, all the way up to the coast.”

“Wait. You mean like, as in, he has landwells and everything?”
>>
>>41807911

“Not as many as he might want, but yeah. Nodes form on the ocean floor the same as they do on land,” says Roger. “A couple decades ago, your dad and him would have been neighbors like you and me are now.”

You twist this new information about in your mind. There was a power hungry underwater landmaster right next to your dad’s old turf. It’s not much of a stretch to see the fish king putting together some plot to get him out of the way of his expansionist dreams. “That’s information,” you say to yourself. “Are there any other crazy landmaster facts I should know? Any tricks or whatever?”

“Uh. Yes?” he answers vaguely.

You guess you could be more specific. “Like, how do you open portals to other planes? That seems like the thing for landmasters to do with wells.” That’s what Meckor wanted. It’s what Freddy wanted. Maybe it’s about time you figured it out.

“I’m not the best with explaining these things,” Roger says, “but I could show you at a land node. Most landwells exist in two places. It’s a little like portaling from well to well, but it doesn’t take the same amount of raw energy.”

Now here you go. This is why you wanted to meet up with this dude. He knows his stuff. “You have a well around here or something where you could show me?” you ask. “I mean, I appreciate your time and whatever, but I am kind of in the middle of a road trip. We’re leaving tomorrow. Or if you can’t handle it now, if I could come back up and you could give me some landmasters-for-dummies lessons?”
>>
>>41807920

“It’s no problem,” says Roger. “I’ve lived around this stuff my whole life and even I don’t get it sometimes. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have to figure it all out on your own.” He thinks for a second. “You know, I have a couple wells along your route. I could skip along and meet up with you and your friends a couple more times at least. It’s not that hard to bring across the basics of how to organize your powers or use them. After that you could master them on your own.”

>Awesome. You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to find somebody who actually knows crap about this stuff.
>Ugh. I don’t want to be a moocher. I’ll pay you back, I swear. You’ll get a favor or something.

Why are spindle wings listed on the charsheet as an [IN] power when Xan said that that spindle wings happen to splitborns who have infernus blood?

Does this mean that the "they're just not finished growing, slap a few more wells on em" theory is right?

Man. That’s quite an offer.

You grin. “Awesome,” you say. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to find someone who actually knows their crap.”

He smiles. “Let me guess. About the same time you realized no one knew what the devil they were talking about?”

“Accurate enough,” you say. Then you frown a little. “Not that I don’t know I’m totally mooching off you. I’ll totally pay you back somehow. You’ll get a favor or something, I swear.”

“Thanks for the sentiment, but I can carry my own baggage,” he says. “You get this one for free.”

You don’t like handouts, but you’ll figure out how to pay him back later, with or without him knowing about it. “Anyway, going forward, are there any big leagues landmasters I need to look out for as I’m driving east?”

“There’s a few, but the only one I’d be worried about is Ossifera,” Roger says. “She thinks she owns the Great Plains, and dragons can get territorial. Beyond that, I’m not sure. I only have one or two wells in the east.”

Good to know. “Cool,” you say. “Last thing. I’ve kind of promised a few of my friends crazy landwell powers after this trip. Are the whole magic boon things common, or are they kind of rare?”

“I’ve found a few of those,” says Roger. “They’re not rare, but they’re not common. I have a few ideas of where they’re more likely to be, but I always prove myself wrong, so I can’t say. You might have one in the wells you already claimed, even. You’ll know for sure once you sort out your connection to those nodes.”

It's pretty obvious with the way we kept slinging around Belphegoran abilities.

>Corrupting Hex everywhere
>blatantly reading emotions through Roger's pokerface
>psionic debuffs (subtle, but Roger's demonstrated some degree of magic sensing)
>All but straight told him we could see his magic aura when we met

Asking just makes Sierra look incredibly careless and naive.
>>
>>41808531

“Up till now I thought landwells were just a mystery gauntlet, so maybe you’ll have to teach me how exactly I can do that,” you say. You pause. “So what made you guess Belphegoran, anyway? I mean, yeah, crown, but how’d you know it wasn’t a halo? You seen Belphegorans before?”

“I’ve run into a few. You threw around a lot of negative energy during that fight,” says Roger. “For some reason I can’t see angels using the same kind of magic.” He glances over at the restaurant door. “Then your halo didn’t look much like your sister’s, and there's this whole slightly strange thing about how you react to my emotions before I express them.”

>I don’t know if you picked up on the subtext, but me and Ro aren’t related by blood.
>Might want to be careful about those hot conclusions. I wouldn’t be surprised if different angel archetypes had different kinds of halos.

No. If he referred to them as handlebars or something, then maybe. But Sierra is proud of her horns. I don't really see her taking offense at someone asking about them.

I don't think it was meant to be her taking offense but her making an unfunny joke

What Sierra takes offence to is probably very different to what other demons take offence to, we aren't saying we're offended we're saying maybe don't ask the next demon the same thing.

“Careful with all those hot conclusions,” you say. “I’ve seen some funky crowns out there. I’m sure there’s more halos in the sea than Rowan’s.”

“Sure, but your eerie ring of light has a few big differences from a solid gold hoop,” Roger says.

“True, I guess. So, is there a name for half-aliens like you? I mean, I’ve got Hellborn, so that’s me,” you say. “I mean. Don’t tell people that’s me, because that’s kind of a problem.”

“I understand,” he says. “I’d rather people don’t find out I’m Starspawn.”

“So Starspawn huh? That’s pretty hardcore,” you say. Not to mention cool.

“Hellborn’s not hardcore?” he asks, incredulous.

You shrug. “There’s this badass guy who calls me spawnling all the time. Maybe I’m biased to words with spawn in them. But speaking of biases, what’s your opinion on demons in general? Or your experience with them?”

“I’ve heard things, and I’ve seen things,” says Roger, guardedly. “But people hear things about my kind and make assumptions, and it’s annoying. I’ve had some bad experiences, sure. But you’re not so bad, so it’s just proof you have to take people one at a time.”

Look at you, being an upright representative of demons everywhere. “There’s some wisdom. It blows pretty hard how crappy people can be to us horned folk. You ever been to hell yourself?” you ask. “Or any other plane? I mean, I’ve been to hell for like two seconds once, and I went to a goblin warren in the mirror plane once. And I’ve spent a couple days at the Cerran renaissance fair.”
>>
>>41809326

“I don’t do much interplanar travel,” says Roger, “but I do go through the mirror plane when I need to get somewhere outside my territory.”

“Mirror travel,” you say. “Uh. By the way, next time you run into a demon, you know, especially a demon girl, you probably don’t want to be nosey about their horns. It’s uh... it’s kind of not a thing you ask about. Unless, you know, she’s coming on to you way heavy, or vice versa.”

You feel a flustered surprise from Roger, enough of one that it makes you snicker.

“Thanks for the advice,” he says evenly.

Just then, out of the Chinese restaurant, the mob of your friends comes spilling out. Looks like they’re good to go. Might be time to retire for the night.

“I’ll go ahead and punch your favor ticket,” you say. “Probably saved you from some future disaster right there.”

“I doubt that,” he says.

“Dude. Lighten up,” you say, slapping him on the shoulder.

“What a novel idea,” he says flatly. “Why didn’t I think of that?”

“Whatever,” you say. “It’s good you finally opened up though. Now we can team up for two parter episodes and season finales.”

Roger doesn’t laugh. “Great.”

Your friends come over.

“Did we interrupt some secret landmaster meeting?” asks Vikrama.

“Not really,” Roger says.

At the same time though, you answer, “Well, yeah.”

“I booked us into a hotel,” Ro says, looking to you. “You done for the day, or are you thinking about pulling an all nighter?”

“Eh. I’m beat,” you say, glancing at Roger. “We’ll be seeing you out on the road, right?”

“I’ll let you know where we can meet up,” Roger agrees, moving over to rejoin his friends.

“Oh sweet,” says Nemo. “Can I come?”

Roger sighs. “Only if you clean the gutters like my mom asked you to.”

“He’s harsh, but fair,” Nemo tells Vikrama.

She laughs. “You’ll have to bring some of your hoard,” she says. “I love plates.”

“How’d you know about that?” he asks, amazed.

Because you told her?

“I’ve got my own secrets,” Vik says, mysteriously.

Nemo is impressed.

“Catch you later,” says Wyatt, waving as they head off.

“See ya,” Ro says, with a brief wave back.

They walk away. You grab Reeber and head back to the car with your peeps.

--

It’s the middle of the night, and you’re sitting on the roof with your feet dangling off the edge. It’s cool, but comfortable, and there’s a slight breeze. You would normally be asleep, but sleeping in the car kind of threw off your sleep schedule.

You’re in a more out there part of town, and you guess they conserve electricity at night by shutting off the lights or something? You wonder if it’s normal or just a lucky break. It’s dark enough you can be all scary and whatnot without worrying about anybody freaking out.

You’ve spent the time acclimating to your new wings, getting used to how they feel and moving them around a little. You still feel that strange otherness to you that you’ve been feeling since Sierra National Forest, and that’s something you’re trying to figure out too.

But other than that, you’ve just been thinking about things, like finding Hassatur, grabbing him by the gills, and ripping his face off.

He had something to do with the boat. In fact, he might just be the one at the boat. You feel an unpleasant, aimless pressure building within you. (+15 Stress: 35)

You probably need to think about something else for a while.

You stand and shift your wings, and then almost fall over backwards. Not because your wings are heavy or anything, they just still surprise you sometimes. It’s like having another pair of arms, except they’re huge, with huge boney hands. Despite their super light-weightness though, you haven’t yet managed to hurt yourself screwing around with them. They’re kind of like your horns in that way. They’re light, and maybe a little flexible, but they’re not fragile.

You’re tempted a little to try to mess around with shadows enough to form some kind of false membrane so you can attempt flight, but you don’t think it’s a good idea to screw yourself right now. You might just leap off the roof and find out too late that you’re not a bird. Or a bat. Ugh.

But you need something to distract you from the building impulse to hurt things, namely fish things.

Just then, that weird sensation that something’s not quite right hits you again. Maybe you’re doubled marked by the Mermenes? It feels like it’s somehow in your shadow, but not. Is it just that sketchy Chinese food you stuffed yourself with? The mystery is enough of a distraction, you guess.

You take a deep breath and sit back down on the gravelly surface of the roof, unsure of where you should be. You guess it doesn’t matter, you’ve done this before all over the place.

You still your thoughts, or at least pretend to, and try to eliminate anything that’s distracting you from the inkling, invasive feeling.

Slowly, you get yourself to a point where you’re pretty much in your own world. (-5 Stress: 30)

And... there’s the feeling. It’s not really a physical feeling. It’s like... a memory. Or something you should remember. Something about the darkness. It’s almost instinctual, somehow, between you and the darkness. Or maybe it is an instinct?

The shadows murmur about you, guessing at your struggle to understand.

They’re whispering, but not amongst themselves. They’re whispering to you, and it’s not just words.

Ranthix as vocalist and drummer

>>41810708

You... feel them. All of them. They press against you, like a weight. Your presence resists them, like a rocky cliff resists the waves.

But there’s a part of you on the periphery, just at the very edge... the very outside. It doesn’t push back against the tide. At the fringe, it mixes. It merges.

And when you focus on that feeling, you wonder why there’s a difference between that and your core. At the thought, you feel your resistance to the shadowy waves break down.

The world goes black.

For the briefest of moments, you’re without edges or borders in a sea of liquid emptiness. You perceive the hotel beneath you, but the awareness is not sight or any sense you’re aware of. You realize you’re drifting off, and you flail wildly, only to find yourself without limbs or body to respond to your thoughts.

You panic. (+10 Stress: 40)

A tension within you resists the shadow pressures, and you collapse back into yourself, snapping back to awareness about ten feet out from the roof.

“Ahh!” you scream, plummeting to the ground.

With a wild outburst of power, you brace yourself against your fall with a huge cushion of shadow. You plunge through and slam into the pavement, taking the brunt of the impact on your hip.

Scowling, you stand and rub at your side. But then you forget your bitterness as you look back up to the roof. Did you just... teleport? No, that’s not quite right. You just... turned into a shadow?

>Stepping of the Shadow: You may enter a shadow form state, during which you can merge with and move through shadows. You may expend power to darken shadows which aren’t thick enough to move through normally, as usual.

See what powers we can use while in shadow form. See how it affects their costs if they're usable. See if we can physically effect things and how objects interact with our body. Try to use our umbrakinesis to make an unnatural shadow shape and then jump through that instead of jumping into a natural shadow.

You don't actually understand the uncertainty principal, do you.
The way it actually works is that you can only know where it is or what it's doing, with your certainty of each inversely proportional to how certain you are of the other. This is because in order to determine where a partical is, you need to bounce another partical off of it, which affects the motion of the target. The higher the energy of the ping, the more accurately it returns the target's position and the more strongly the target is knocked around.

Well, if you can turn into a shadow once, you can sure as hell do it again. You clench your fists and focus yourself again, this time a whole lot faster since you know what you’re trying to go for. It takes a minute, but soon you go formless again, free in the darkness.

You feel airy and weightless, but also way clumsy. You try to direct yourself upwards to the second story hotel room, and drift upwards, kind of like a jellyfish. You could probably scamper up the side of the building quicker than what you’re doing, but going shadowform is almost like flying.

Your shadow-self joins the shadows on the wall and you impel yourself upward.

You avoid the light streaming from a window with a still-awake occupant, though the uncomfortable intensity of even the ambient light gives you a bad feeling about what might happen if you did this and you accidentally ran into direct light, even if it was just from somebody’s cellphone.

Upon reaching the corner of your and Rowan’s hotel room, you slide yourself between the edges of the corner and enter the room, everything exactly how you left it from when you snuck out earlier.

You disentangle yourself from the shadows and step onto the carpet. You look hard at Rowan’s sleeping form. You wanted her to be awake so you could scare the crap out of her or something, but she’s totally out of it. Damn.

Angrily, you go over and shake her shoulder. “Wake up!” you hiss.

Groggily, she rolls over. “Ugh. What’s it Sierra?” she asks.
>>
>>41811378

“I’m totally the shadow walker now,” you say, urgently.

“That’s cool,” she says disinterestedly, burying her head back in her pillow.

“No, you don’t get it. I figured out how to go all shadow and whatever!” you explain.

She squints through the darkness at the nearby clock, and you feel a brush of annoyance from her, and she heaves a tired sigh. “Go to bed, Sie. It’s three in the morning.”

>She’s just not awake yet, push her out of bed or something.
>Cease bothering Rowan.

>>
You scoff. “You’re the worst,” you say.

“That’s nice,” she mumbles into her pillow.

Stupid Rowan not freaking out about this. You storm back to the window and let yourself out. If it’s three already, you don’t have much more time to screw around with your new superpowers before dawn comes and ruins everything.

You head over to a nearby park and spend the rest of the night (morning?) testing the extents of your power.

Unfortunately, shadow stepping isn’t really as much like teleportation as you wanted it to be. You can merge into shadows and come out of them somewhere else, but you have to spend time as a shadow between the two and claw your way along through force of will. And you’re not even that fast. You can totally run faster on foot, especially when nobody’s looking.

But you take your clothes with you when you go into the shadows, so you figure you should be able to take other stuff with you, too. Little things aren’t much of a problem in your initial trials, though taking bigger things, like chairs or whatever, requires some more power to keep you in shadow form. You try to see if you can make cars vanish and things like that, but it’s no good if it’s nailed down or too big to carry.

And while shadow surfing is cool, it seems like you’re pretty limited in terms of stuff you can actually do whilst shadowed up. Like, you can’t sling around most of your magic, because that requires too much centralized willpower, and that just shoves you right out of your symbiotic shadow form. And you don’t even want to try throwing fire around while you’re in the dark. Bad idea. But so long as you stick to Verwelken stuff, it’s pretty synergistic, if that’s a real word.

When dawn starts coming on, you’re severely limited to surfaces when you’re shadowing around. In the night you might be able to basically fly, but ambient light really limits your options. And you don’t even want to try this kind of crap during the day.
>>
>>41812298

You don’t want to find out which one wins, Infernus fire immunity or deathly Verwelken light weakness if you get hit by direct sunlight while shadow stepping.

You slouch back to your room around six, drained and satisfied, and pass out.

You guess at some point you wake up, enter zombie mode, and go out to the car, because you’re pretty sure you remember some of that. It’s not till midday you awake in the backseat.

“How late did you stay up?” asks Moriah.

“Late,” you say.

“What were you talking about last night?” Rowan asks. “Something about shadows?”

You give everybody the rundown on your freaking cool discovery.

“Cool!” Vikrama says. She gets it.

“I was under the assumption you could already turn into a shadow at will,” says Xan, affecting a bored tone, though secretly impressed.

Reeber would also be impressed, if you could speak dog language to him. But he is a foreign dog and probably doesn’t speak any dog language you’d know.

And then your trip continues down lonely Canadian roads. The scenery slowly changes from moutnains to more mountains, then to less mountains. You wonder how many more wells you’re going to find, or if anything out there is going to find you first.

You’ve got landmaster lessons scheduled, a travel route locked, and one of your dad’s old enemies maybe identified. When you get to New York, you’re going to have to rip that storage shed apart to see if there’s anything there that gives you any clues. But if Hassatur did do anything to your family, you’re going to turn him inside out and wring him free of his briny fish-faced blood.

You’ve just got to keep it under wraps till then, and gather as much power as possible so you’ll be ready for it.

--End Part 122--

I'm also looking forward to the changes that'll happen to her when she eventually starts getting serious about becoming an Imperiate. Ro has a damn near godmode spell that tanks impact damage no problem. If she's high enough to get injured, she has time to activate it. If she's so low she can't activate it in time, it's too low for her to get hurt.

The only thing we know of that's hurt her through her holy shield thing was Sierra during a bloodrage, when she grabbed Ro's arm and twisted it. Apparently godmode shield is bad at dealing with grappling and grappling-like attacks.

RIP BRO

You know what'd be a neat summon? Generic human-looking goons with guns. Wouldn't have to worry about using blatantly demonic or magical summons and blowing our cover.

Or maybe make some kind of lightning monster thing. We're pretty familiar with Zelathis so she could probably make an electricity based summon.

Ooooh. Idea. We have a link right to Ro because of the boon, and we live with the Hallows, so maybe we could make/get a pseudo-angel summon thing. That'd be fucking awesome.

It'd be funny as fuck if the next summon she got was a squad of 3 or 4 human gangstas.
