Mom and I sit inside of the house of our own creation. It's a dwelling which exists on a magical plane of reality. We search around the immaculate creation of almost perfect blends of both quaint and comfy. It's really a place both of us can call home.

"I don't know, it seems a little.. Empty." Mom ruins everything by pointing out the obvious.

Which is true, it does seem a little empty. It could use a few people to truly be called a home.

I am Itsukuma Masami. Today I am creating a card meant to turn a monster into a human! Unfortunately, Mom had no idea what she was doing, and really neither did I. So we're just trying things until we get something that works! It'll work eventually, I'm sure of it!

So this theme was: 'Things that people may come back to.' A big, comfy home is a great place to start.

Now Mom wants people in it, I think I know just the people to get in here.
"Hey Mom, you said we could bring people in here, though. Want to see if the nice monster outside wants to try it?"
"What did I say about-"

"Yeah but, it's not like we're testing a card on him! We're inviting him into our magic home!"
"Masami.."

Hmph. This will be a tougher sale than I thought.

"You know, I know of another monster living in a mansion who probably misses his siblings. Maybe we should go invite him, as well?"
"No experimenting on people!"

"It's not an experiment! This is a home, right? We're just inviting them inside."

She crosses her arms and thinks about it. Before she sighs.
"It's just as well.. I don't know how to test this card otherwise."

"No no no, not testing! Inviting!"
"Yeah, that."

--

We're back in the real world, now. Before us is a fully-drafted card, and it almost feels like home! It's a good place to start to fix up monsters into people.

You could try bringing everyone in, but that's a risky proposition. Most people in your house haven't been to the other world. I know from experience that it can be scary there if you've never been. Plus it would be confusing to bring in a bunch of people to a place you've never tried bringing anyone before.

Instead, you're just going to bring a couple people here.
First up, Kaori!

"Hey Kaori! We made this great looking house! Want to come?"

She gives me a look like I am completely insane.
"A HOUSE? You spent like, an hour, making a house!? Earth to Masami, you have less than a day to make something to beat Asai!"
"And I did! It just looks like a house!"

Kaori sighs, giving me that look again.
"Okay, I'll see your dumb house."
"It's not a dumb house! And thank you."

Next I turn to the monster, who seems to be sulking on the back porch. I approach him and sit down next to him.
"What's wrong?"

"I don't want to talk about it."

Oh no, you don't get to act like that around here!
"Come ooooooon, tell me!"

He grumbles, turning his head away.
"No."

Rude!
"Well, want to come to this place we just made? Maybe it'll make you feel better!"

Instead of accepting, he pushes himself up and steps away from me.
"Priestess, I don't think we're going to have something to defeat Asai within the day. I think we should take Marie up on her offer."

>"No."
>"You're just grumpy! Come on! I'll show you something cool!"

"No." I cross my arms. "In fact, never suggest that again."
"Hmph." He turns back around to face me, "I should have expected that. You really are Izumi's daughter."

Something seems odd about this.
"I want to know right now, Do you know anything about how monsters become people? The last few times hasn't surprised you in the least."

He shuffles his foot, sighing.

"Masami, come with me. I want to talk."
"Okay." I hop up and follow him into the garden.

We walk along the small pond as I check on the plants.
Then I catch a glance of that Oak tree, Cirrus is still sleeping under it. A part of me wants to go sleep right next to her.

"Masami, I've been keeping something from Izumi." He states rather plainly, he seems to be looking toward Fortune HQ.
"Hm? What is it?"

He's silent for a second,
"I know how monsters are made into people."

There's a moment of silence, before I voice my shock.
"You KNEW!? Why didn't you tell us!?"

He turns away, in a way he almost seems sad.
"I found out when the Chairman lost his sigil. He was using that to prevent monsters from becoming human, it's a common occurrence when monsters interact with humans."

"T-then, shouldn't you become human?"

I hear a sound, followed by another. It almost sounds like he's.. laughing?
It's followed by a groan, and then a gasp, and then-
"Oh my god ARE YOU CRYING!?"

I jump forward and wrap my arms around him, "I didn't know you COULD cry! I've never seen a monster do that before, or have an expression, or-"
"Enough, Please."

Even his tone of voice has changed. What is going on!?
"Why are you crying!? You have to tell me what's wrong right now!"

"The secret I learned, is that monsters are made of emotions. Some good, some bad. They're incomplete people. When I learned that, I searched high and low for the one feeling, that one experience that would make me into a person. I never found it, I don't think I ever will, either."

"well I'm sure we can find it if we all work together!

"There has to be one, though! And if you just told someone and asked for help searching for it, we could have found it a lot sooner!"
"I've stopped looking, and I suspect Asai has as well."

Oh, he did NOT just try to imply that my plan won't work.

"Stop, I see you as the always-helpful, good-natured monster that always does what he thinks is right. There HAS to be something there. We can start there!"

"This isn't about me, Masami. It's about Asai. If I can't find what it is I'm missing, then I have doubts that you'll be able to find what he's missing to make him whole. It isn't something you can just make someone do. It's a step of personal discovery."

I think about his words for a few seconds, before standing back up to him.
"Keeping it to yourself was a stupid idea, you can't miss what you don't know, right?"

"It was a dumb idea, I will admit to that." He glares at his feet, "It's just something that I wasn't comfortable facing. I've put a great amount of thought into it, more than I would want to tell you about."

"It's not like it's impossible, Julie and Haruko felt it! Maybe they can help!"

"No, I'm not saying it's impossible. I'm saying it's random. What worked for those two cannot work for me. Believe me, when I learned that Izumi was once a monster, I tried."
There's that sad tone again.

I hate all this sadness! I'm gonna try to make it happy again!
"Listen, I'm trying something that may turn monsters into humans. I'm not saying it will work for you, but it can't hurt trying it, right?"

He grumbles, stomping his foot slightly.
"I've put so much time and effort thinking about what I am missing, it's a subject I rather not think about anymore. I am who I am."

"Then try it! Try this new thing I'm making, even if it doesn't work, I'll still learn something!"

He's silent for a second, before patting me on the head. Rude!

"Okay. I'll lend you a hand."
"Yay!"

We walk across the garden and step inside the door. Kaori is tapping her foot at the entrance.
"Well?"
"Yeah, yeah, we're going!"

"I guess we are." The monster still seems sad.

Kaori visibly notices and gives me a look, like it's somehow my fault.
"What?" I snap back at her.
"Nothing." She sighs.

"You two hold on, There's someone else I want to take with us."
"More delays?"

"It's fiine! Just one moment!"

I hop away to the rec room while the monster and Kaori start talking. First thing they talk about? How I can never make up my mind.
Rude.

I step inside to notice Fortune's secretary reading a book from the shelf. I'm not sure why she's reading it, because she very clearly demonstrated to me that she doesn't need to read books in order to understand them.

I walk over and nudge her.
"Hey!" I shake her a little. "Want to go on an adventure?!"
"Pass." She says nonchalantly.
"But- I haven't even told you what it was!"
"I said 'Pass'." She squeaks again.

I cross my arms and sit back.
"It's not REALLY an adventure, it's more like a science experiment!"
"Pass."

"It's a big home, with lots of books! A rec room even larger than this one!"
"Pass."

"But-"
"Pass."

I think about my next move. This is going to take some cunning and maybe some skill.
"What if I told you this was to beat Asai?"
She sets her book down and looks over to me.
"Beat him, how?"

"Make him into a human! You turned into a human for some reason. Do you know why?"
"No, I remember absorbing the flames in Fortune HQ, and then my body fell away. "

"Well, we're gonna find out why! Then we're gonna apply that to Asai!"

She grumbles, picking the book back up.
"Why do you want to make him, of all people, human? He's rotten to the core. I doubt there's anything worth saving in there."

>I don't know
>It's not just about him!
>He's a jerk, but I don't believe he's a jerk to the core.

She's expecting me to give her some kind of answer.
That's not what I do, though!

Instead, I grab her hand and pick her up from the chair.
"Hey!"
"Ask me that question later! Now is time for science!"

"But- I was in a really good place in that book!"
"You can read that book from just touching it, what does it matter?"

She protests some, but I don't listen! Instead, I sling her into a carry and take her into the living room.

There are more important things to do right now besides read books.

I walk into the living room and set her down next to Mom. She has a frown on her face, and glares daggers at me.

"We're ready!" I proclaim. Mom gets the card out and holds it in front of us.
"Everyone, we're going into this card. I know most of you haven't done this before, so hang on tight."

I concentrate on the card, while gripping the Secretary and Kaori's hand firmly.

--

We're home!
At least, in this kind of home. It's complicated.

"Wow." Kaori walks around the much larger living room.
"Where's the books?" The blue-haired girl asks.
"Not now." I scold her.

"So, what do you think?" Mom asks sheepishly.
"I think this looks great! Nice job!"
"Yes, it's a very nice dwelling." The girl still seems disinterested.

"It really does feel nice, it feels like a place I could come home to." Another voice says.
It's a man's voice, but it's not as gravely or harsh as I was expecting it to be. It sounds much more smooth and mature.

"By the way, this is my first time in this world, is it supposed to feel this different?" The same voice asks again.

Everyone's heads turn to meet the new voice. A tall boy is standing at it's source.
"Who are you?"
"What do you mean, Empress?"

"Uh, are you lost?" I ask, this is unexpected! Did I drag someone else in?
"What are you talking about?" He sits down on the floor. "You brought me here."

All of us stare at him, trying to decide who he is and where he came from. He sighs and leans backwards onto the floor.
