Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

Your name is Sierra Beckhoff, and you are hellborn – part mortal, part demon. You are travelling cross-country on the ultimate road trip with your friends to gain wacky powers and establish yourself as a landmaster.

You’re currently in Vancouver, meeting up with Roger Fragonfield, a Canadian guy who also happens to be a landmaster. He’s pretty powerful you guess, and you suppose his friends are on par given that one’s a dragon, and the other has a pretty nice beard.

After successfully fending off all uninvited parties, you are now poised to begin LC 2015.

---

As much as you like chatting about this kind of stuff, you’re not in a mood to explain what might have been one of the weirdest fights you’ve ever gotten into, even for Moriah and Vik. “Rowan, can you fill them in?” you ask. “I need to talk to Roger.”

Ro lets you slip away without a fuss, and distracts everyone by her storytelling prowess. She’s pretty good at putting up a solid public front. Roger’s friends even get tangled up in the telling as well, leaving you to your own machinations.
>>
>>41735966

You head over to where Roger’s letting off steam. Or... whatever. You can feel a knotted kind of tension within him as you approach, but you’ve felt worse in people. “So...” you say, trailing off.

Roger wipes his nose and hurries to get back on his feet, though his breathing is still belabored from the effort of banishing your masked attacker. “It won’t bother anyone again today,” he says, averting his eyes so he doesn’t have to look you in the face. “You said you wanted some sage landmaster wisdom over the phone? I didn’t really understand the texts you sent after midnight.”

>I thought it’d be more of a back and forth. We’ll get all collaborative up in this.
>We probably shouldn’t hang around all these dead Mermenes. I don’t know about you, but I’m trying to stay off the magic cop radar.
>Wow. You’re pretty good at pretending like we didn’t just get straight up attacked by the boogie man.
>So what the hell was that all about? This thing’s after you? Why is it after you? And how the hell did it know my name?
>The King in Yellow is way hot and bothered over you. You beat him at Checkers or shoot his dog or something?
>Wyatt and Nemo do a pretty good job covering for you. You shouldn’t be so paranoid about them screwing up.

WHY DIDN'T I SEE THIS EARLIER
>>
You decide to humor Roger’s sudden shift in topic. You’ll even look over him lambasting your texting abilites. “I thought it could be more of a back and forth,” you say. “We’ll share tricks and trade secrets, you know, get all collaborative up in this.”

Roger gives you a once over. “You do look like you’ve picked up a couple wells since last time,” he says.

“You calling me fat?” you ask. You can’t help it. It’s not even funny anymore, but it is tradition. “Seriously though. It’s not all biscuits and gravy in the sunshine kingdom.”

“How so?” he asks.

“Well, I’m kind of on this vision quest right now to get as many landwells across America as possible –“

He straightens up a bit at mention of that. “Really. Have you found any so far?”

“Several,” you say, cryptically. “But I’m kind of not really getting the whole landwell deal from new wells. You know, like all the power or all the badass landwell perks.”

“Out of the ones you’ve found, how many have you claimed already?” he asks.

You decide to be chancy. “Four,” you say.

Roger chuckles, weakly. “How long have you been on this trip?”

“Still week one,” you say. “Most is coming up though, hopefully.”

“You claimed four wells in less than a week,” he says, a confused look on his face.

You shrug. “I mean, I was probably passing some up, but I’m kind of going for strategic positioning or ease of locating right now.”

Roger shakes his head. “You don’t just claim four wells in a few days,” he says flatly. “If you’re serious, then... forget the power. I’m impressed you’re not in a coma.”

That catches you off guard. “Excuse me?”

“A physical body, human or not, can only take so much change at a time,” says Roger. “You need to give yourself time to acclimate to increases in power, or you can end up smothering yourself.”

You look yourself over. “I don’t feel smothered,” you say.
>>
>>41737008

“And that’s not normal,” he replies. “Frankly... it’s a little bizarre.”

“Wow,” you say. “You’re pretty good at pretending like you weren’t just straight up attacked by the boogieman two seconds ago. And you’re calling me weird?”

“It’s that kind of life,” Roger says, fatigue in his voice.

“Now we’re mentioning it, your best bud knew me, apparently,” you say.

“So your name is Beckhoff,” Roger says.

“Last name,” you say, brushing your hair out of your eyes so you can keep closer watch on him.

Roger grows pensive. “Is your dad’s name David?”

You figure it’s obvious enough it’s not worth beating around the bush. “Pretty much,” you say, now curious. “You’ve... heard of him?”

Roger furrows his brow. “I think your dad knew my dad,” he says, carefully. “But... we’ve got to get out of here. Too many deep dead spoil the broth.” He nods over at the Mermene corpses hacked and strewn all over the place.

“Uh. Right,” you say, remembering where you are. “Probably best to fly under the magic cop radar.”

“Definitely.” Roger whistles and waves for his friends to follow, and starts trekking toward the edge of the park.

Within a couple minutes, you leave all smells and scenes of carnage behind. Now only peaceful redwoods and shrubs surround you.

demon/hellborn = evil

Fuck look at the crowthers. Demons have as much potential for good or bad as any other species. Just a bit more on the violent side due to the environment they evolved from.

I'm sure there's some fucked up angels.

>satyrs =/= demons
In this setting they are. Nymphicians (or however you spell it, I can never get it right) are goat-people demons and their powerset is based around stealing other powers from other people. They have an easier time if they're engaged in sex or other close shit with the person they're powerstealing from.

You’re curious about what Roger might know about your dad, but your dad’s been gone forever. Your immediate concerns gravitate more to how to fix problems in the here and now, namely, the problems you’ve been having with your wells.

"Would it help if I wasn’t really set in stone from a physical standpoint?” you ask. “I mean, there was this sprite mooching off one of the wells I claimed and I thought it was stealing my thunder or something. “

“Once you’ve got a node, you control the power in it,” Roger says. “And what do you mean by not being set in stone?”

“Well. I’m not a hundred percent ‘physical’ physical, I guess. Maybe the extra power has room to expand without me exploding?”

“That could be, depending,” he replies.

“Plus whenever I claim wells, stuff about me kind of changes a little bit. Or more than a little. I mean, I’ve never really had an issue with sucking down landwells. It’s pretty intense for like, a few minutes, but it always passes.”

Roger nods, a little more involved than he was a moment ago. “I’ve heard about that happening.”

Except you can tell by his feelings on the subject that he’s talking about something more personal than an acquaintance. “You mean with you,” you say.

“That’s not what I meant,” he says, cautious.

“Whatever, man,” you say. If he wants to be all secretive, that’s his deal. “So what’s the deal with your octopus? Shadow octopus? Shadoctopus? As far as I’ve seen, summons are related to whoever’s summoning them.” Sattler’s landmaster had a huge moose. Hugo the landmaster had his ram and cougar and eagle thing. Both were straight mortal, probably. Roger’s octopus... well it wasn’t exactly an octopus.

“Landmasters summon animals because that’s what most landmasters understand instinctively,” says Roger. “Summons are personifications of your own comprehension of power or your will. There’s nothing stopping you or me from summoning figments of imagination.”
>>
>>41738306
That should get you tax exempt status for your public service.
>>
>>41738296
Not everyone are assumptive assholes.

>>41738311
nymphicans are not satyrs. Satyrs are a race native to Earth.

>>41738328
We had to go intimidate them for wally. We brought along priest dude.
>>
>>41738330

“So that thing is a figment of your imagination?” you ask, not buying it for a second.

“Just as much as your hellhounds are,” says Roger.

You reach the street, with the occasional car driving past. Vancouver’s not as busy as San Fransisco is. Maybe it’s the fact there’s more room to spread around.

“Let’s shelve the big talk and take a power break for lunch,” you say.

Roger nods. “That’s not a bad idea.”

You wind up dining out at some hole in the wall Chinese all you can eat buffet. You like hole in the wall establishments though, and you like Chinese, so it’s a win win.

Everybody seems to be getting along for the most part, but there’s a kind of awkward secretive atmosphere going on the whole time that kind of makes you set your teeth on edge. You and Roger wind up being probably the least talkative out of the table, with even Moriah getting drawn into magic discussion amongst everybody more than you.

Honestly, magic’s kind of over your head. You know enough to read, but that doesn’t mean you know any of the words.

You’re left pushing sauce-soaked rice around your plate with a fork, while Xanissil goes on a huge tirade against flight-capable persons, much to the chagrin of Nemo and Rowan. The others in the restaurant give you and your party a wide berth, afraid that whatever fantastic delusions you’re suffering through are contagious.

Once the check’s paid, Roger stands and heads outside on the excuse of grabbing fresh air. You’ve kind of been waiting for a chance to continue your previous conversation away from prying ears, so you excuse yourself in turn and beat him outside by cutting corners.

Vancouver’s downtown towers up in the distance, compact, efficient, and glowing with light. It’s a different kind of sprawl than what you’re used to. Everything’s new and optimistic.
>>
>>41738249
Ok, fine. We don't tell him we're hellborn. And then he won't know.
I mean we only summoned a ton of demonic critters right in front of him, told his friends about our hellhound, and admitted to being David Beckoff's daughter.

No reason at all to think that he might figure out we have demonic ancestry.
>>
>>41738351

The street you’re on is well lit, with numerous groups of people walking to and fro. Despite the warmth left over from the day, there’s still that chilly seaside wind that you’re familiar with. Guess some things don’t really change no matter where you are on the coast.

Roger is only briefly taken aback by you already being outside when he comes out the door to wait on the others.

“Surprise,” you say lamely, leaning against the wall

Roger settles down on a nearby bench. “I’ve seen better,” he remarks.

Calling it now, Roger's our cousin or some shit.

>“Landmasters summon animals because that’s what most landmasters understand instinctively,” says Roger. “Summons are personifications of your own comprehension of power or your will. There’s nothing stopping you or me from summoning figments of imagination.”
Bullshit. Bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit.

Roger's lying his ass off to try to make us think he's not a whatever it is that's related to shadowtopusses.

Sierra's summons are all real things that she's never heard of before. Every single one of them is some sort of exotic Halth wildlife. Maybe summons /can/ be figments of imagination or power interpretations, but that's not all there is to it.

Classic landmaster lying-your-ass-off on Roger's part here. I bet his family wrote that book that says wells can't be within 100 miles of one another.
>>
>>41738572
Because everything else is easily gotten to. If we don't do this here then we probably wont do it at all.

Anons are notorious procrastinators. Remember how long the friend reveal took.
>>
>>41738622
Could be your summons just naturally gravitate towards things relating to your nature.

And summons aren't solely a landmaster thing. It's a magic thing.
>>

No. Cause that pointless and im not waiting an hour just to confirm something we all already know.

>Sierra's summons are all real things that she's never heard of before.
It's very possible she learned of them when she was very young (like children learning about barn animals/other earth animals), forgot about them, and now the summons are being brought in from her subconscious. The memory of Reeber was sitting in her subconscious, as was parts of Heltic, that Creepy Mask Guy, and the nursery rhyme.

That he's not entirely human.

Like a 90% chance he isn't 100% human.
>>
>>41738708
True, I guess, but it seems kinda unlikely. Tiger isn't even native to her mom's country and Crowther didn't even know what half of them were off the top of his head. We had to go look through books for the names.

The black eyes, corpsey skin, black veins, claws, and raptor legs are all capable of shifting without a glamour.

And maybe some other stuff I forgot.

ahh, then we should get that.
>>
>>41739073
Compared to the alternative picks, paralytic venom was pretty crappy. The choice was between buffed fire damage, buffed claw damage, or paralysis venom. I mean, I'd love to get it, it's just that I don't regret voting for the others instead of it.

Just . . . Ask for help. We have this whole HISTORY and we could use a friend. Someone who understands that this is all weird shit, and despite all the power we have it's just so much to deal with. We have angels and demons and dragons and Roger is the most normal dude we know who is also dealing with this.

Could he be the one person who talks straight to us and isn't cryptic as fuvk because God have we had enough of that.
>>
“Your friends seem like good people,” you observe. “It’s pretty cool you’ve got wizard and dragon cohorts, and they actually give a crap about you. Ten out of ten landmaster marks from me.”

Reeber emerges from the night, coming over to sit at your side, tail wagging. You couldn’t do to lock him up, and it looks like he’s managed to handle himself once more. You reach down and scratch his furry head.

Roger takes a breath. “Really couldn’t ask for more from them,” he says, wistfully. He glances back toward the restaurant’s front door, maybe wondering why he’s out here instead of in there. But the feeling seems to fade, and he looks back over toward Reeber and you. “How long have you been with the Hallows?”

You don’t want to answer. Answering means you have to think about your life before you were adopted. You answer anyway. You can’t forget the past forever. “Coming up on a year,” you say.

“Before that?” he asks.

“They’re my family now,” you say, sounding harsher than you intended. “Except... about our dads. You said they knew each other? I mean. Not to be a jerk if it’s a touchy subject, but is your dad, you know, available for comment?”

Roger sighs. “He doesn’t typically stay in touch,” he says.

“Well. How do you usually reach him?” you ask. “You got an address or something?”

“No,” he says.

“But he’s not dead,” you clarify.

“You know, it is a touchy subject,” says Roger.

“Well hey, probably beats having a dead dad,” you say. You might have come across more bitter than ironic, though.

Roger doesn’t give you any resistance on that front. “Sorry.”

“Look man,” you say, impatience seizing you, “I want this whole neighbor thing to work out. Really, I do. Especially since there’s apparently some history going on here. But it isn’t happening if you and me act all squirrelly about it.”

There’s a brief silence. “Some things are better left unsaid,” he comments.
>>
>>41739416

“And some things are better left said,” you reply. “I’ve spent too long hiding who I am from everybody. But the louder I get, the better things get. Maybe keeping everything to yourself is why you’re so miserable all the time.”

Roger doesn’t even argue the point. You feel the heavy weight of weariness hanging over him. “Okay,” he says, quietly.

“Okay?” you ask, unsure of what he means.

“You get a question, I get a question,” he says.

“Okay,” you say. You can get behind this. You don’t really get the crazed anti-demonic vibe from Roger. For all you know, he could be your cousin one Verwelken removed or something stupid like that.

You smirk to yourself and try to pick a question from the many at your disposal. Better to start with something simple, you think. “How many glamors are you wearing right now?”

“None. I can change shape,” Roger says, his tone dour. He looks up at you. “Are you a Belphegoran?”

He must have understood what your halo really was. “I’m Hellborn,” you say, trying the waters. Best not to do too much at once.

“So you’re half human too,” says Roger.

“Close enough to it, I guess.”

He narrows his eyes at you. “Quarter?”

“I’m not exactly sure, but I think so,” you answer.

Roger nods. “All right. Your question.”

So can we actually use our wings as stabbing implements ala Kerrigan? Or are they pretty much just decorative? Because by the looks of them they have a much larger range than our claws

We could probably use them to get some extra reach with our shadow tendrils, but I can't see them being useful for much actual combat. I'd rather just get a sharp stick if we need to stab from further away.

Should be awesome for grabbing things at home, though.

Wow. Being direct actually worked out just like you imagined, for once. Now it’s time for the hard questions. “What’s the octopus called?” Well, almost time for the hard questions.

“It’s a Yevanok,” he says.

“You were so full of crap about that imagination stuff,” you say.

“It’s true, even if it didn’t apply to that particular situation,” he says. Then he tilts his head to the side, just an inch. “What were you doing before you landed in Williams Lake last winter?”

“Dueling some landmaster for a well in Cerra, which itself was actually part of a job for a couple Ferran rebels I know,” you reply. “So what kind of shapeshifting do you do, like eagle, bear, hawk, then snake, or is it just whatever the hell you want?”

“Not exactly,” says Roger, though he doesn’t seem to know exactly how to answer your question. “I don’t control it. But I can direct it, if that makes sense.”

“You go hulk?”

“Let’s go with that,” he says.

“How much hulk can you go?”

“I don’t know,” says Roger. “I spend most of my time making sure I don’t push myself that far.”

That explains his little shutdown earlier, which kind of reminds you of you, actually. “That sounds familiar.”

“Do you go hulk?” Roger asks.

“I’ll just say yes,” you say. “But I also spend a lot of time making sure that doesn’t happen, so.” Hmm. More questions. “You some kind of were-Canadian, then? Like. You’re not human, you said.”

“I don’t know if there’s a name for it, really,” he says. “My mom is human. But my dad’s not from here.”

“Not from... Canada?”

Roger nods.

“Not from this plane?” you ask.

He nods again.

“Which plane is he from?” There’s seven, but you don’t want to go through each one.

“He’s not really from any of the planes,” says Roger. “He’s from a sort of different spatial realm.”

“What, like some kind of trans-dimensional alien?” you ask. You knew watching the science channel had to pay off some day.

He spreads his hands, helplessly. “Pretty much,” he says.
>>
>>41741236
Need to practice with controlling them alot before we can depend on them in battle
>>
>>41741282

“You’re a freaking alien,” you say, grinning.

“In my defense, my dad’s been here longer than a lot of people, so he’s about as alien a family whose grandparents immigrated from China. And my mom is Native American, so I’m less of an alien than you, by heritage.” Roger can’t handle the bench any longer, and takes a stand. There’s too much energy in this conversation to stay seated. “How can you be living with the Hallows if you’re a demon? They have to know who you are.”

You snort. “They’re way solid,” you say. “They’re not crazy fundamentalists or anything like that. I mean. I’ve done some crappy things, that’s a given. But they see past that kind of crap. They’re real like that. I just met ‘em and one thing led to another, and I didn’t have to leave, so I just stayed and it’s cool.”

“We’re talking about the same Isaac Hallow here, aren’t we?” asks Roger.

“Look. He did some stuff in the war, I get it,” you say. “But that was fucking seventy years ago. Give him a break. Sometimes people die and you regret it, but he’s literally the best person I know, so don’t judge.”

Roger lets you vent without interrupting. “Touchy subject?”

“A little, maybe. Yeah,” you say. “Forget it. Anyway. Did you even call in for help with any of your fish related problems?”

“No,” says Roger. “I can’t afford those kinds of risks – I’m not bashing Isaac, either. The more people I have trying to help me, the more targets the Yellow Serpent has.”

“And let me take a wild guess here, but I bet you have to deal with people after you just because of what you are.”

“I’m the kind of thing people’d rather not have living on sovereign Canadian soil,” Roger confirms, his expression aloof. “What about you?”
>>
>>41741302

“Not so much,” you say. “I mean. Maybe a little bit, but I wasn’t really demon enough before I started picking up wells for anybody to notice. And I didn’t even know what I was anyway. It’d be worse now, but I’ve got super mafia-style family protection, so that’s a thing. How long have you known... what you are?” Whatever exactly he is.

“Since I was a kid,” says Roger. “I got into landmaster stuff early. My mom was big on learning family heritage, even if it included things on my dad’s side.” He pauses. “Do you have horns?”

You laugh a little. “Pretty gnarly ones,” you say, glancing around at the random people walking to and fro. “I’d show you, but those children aren’t going to think about themselves.” But as much as you like chatting about horns, you want to chat about your freaking dad. “What do you know about David? I know maybe you didn’t ever meet him, but the more people I talk to, the more it sounds like he made some pretty damn big waves.”

“I know he used to be the landmaster of a big part of everything up and down the Pacific coast,” says Roger. “There’s always small time landmasters, but he was a large time landmaster. My mom said he used to drop by every once in a while a long time ago, trying to get information on my father or just get in touch with him. When I started getting out there in the beginning, I thought I’d run into him, but I never did. I just assumed....”

“You assumed right,” you say blandly.

Roger looks pained. “I can’t imagine losing your dad like that,” he says. “That must have been hard.”

I'd really like to know if there's anything we should know to prevent accidentally turning ourself into a vegetable.
