Welcome back to Mortal Kombat Konquest (Yes, a Quest), an adventure that will span the realms and incorporates many aspects of Mortal Kombat canon, from the games to the films to the comics and more.

Previously, searched the frozen reaches of Lost Edenia for an ancient temple which contained the Edenia Kamidogu. After defeating its guardian with our newfound powers over water and healing, granted by a mysterious bald water-woman, we were contacted and told that the Emperor, Shao Kahn, has returned from his apparent death at his wedding and is now laying siege to his fortress-city, where Kitana and our other allies await. With our nethership gone and no other magical means to cross the land, Kaito and Sub-Zero head south, crossing into the lands of the shokan, Kuatan...

The sun reaches low over the horizon, managing to cut through some of the purple clouds, painting the sky with streaks of orange and violet. Kaito would almost think it were beautiful were he not so preoccupied with his current task and his mind distracted by the recent news.

How long could Kitana hold out against an army of the undead, and centaurs? Who else is coming to her aid? He sent Tortek north with orders to join with Kitana, but could the tarkatans be enough to turn the tide of the siege?

Sub-Zero climbs a nearby rock and speaks. "This must be Kuatan," he says.

Kaito climbs the rock and gets a view of the nearby surrounding lands.

The shokan have built their capital on the side of a mountain, with the castle jutting out from it. Numerous camps can be seen all along the ground, and massive cave mouths are lit by great burning braziers. People can be seen moving about the area.

"I thought their home was underground," Kaito says.

"This is not a very large settlement... The majority of their people must live in those large caves."

Kaito knows that the shokan royal family swore allegiance to Kitana--he was there to see it, after all--but they also swore allegiance to Shao Kahn while he was alive. Could he count on them to be allies again with his return?

Kaito looks at Sub-Zero. "Let's approach them openly. That might work best."

Sub-Zero seems unsure. "I am more for sneaking, myself."

Kaito leads the way down the hill and towards the outskirts of the camps. Two large, burly shokan guards in armor step out to block his path; they carry polearms.

"HALT! State your business in Kuatan!"

Kaito stands before the guards. "I am Akayama Kaito, and I am a personal friend of the Kahnum Kitana. I have come to seek aid from the shokan royal family, who have sworn their allegiance to her."

The guards look at each other. Kaito hopes this works...

The guards stand aside. One of them enters the camp proper. "I will take you as far as the palace. To see the royal family, you will first be judged by the palace guards."

Kaito breathes a sigh of relief and throws a thumbs-up to Sub-Zero. They move into the surface encampment.

The shokan are a hardy people and work for most of the day. They are moving large rocks and supplies to and from the cobalt mines below, pushing carts and carrying picks and tools.

The path up the mountain is long and winding. At the top is the castle, but first they must pass through the opening chambers.

There, they are met with a shokan noble who wears a golden band on his head and a red outfit. The guard introduces Kaito and Sub-Zero in the same manner they introduced himself.

The shokan folds his arms. "I am Zenkaro, advisor to the King and Queen. Demonstrate your worth before I allow you to speak with them."

"Sheeva is my friend. She and I have adventured and fought together and I know she would put in a good word for me. Sir."

Zenkaro scratches his chin. "My daughter has left for the south on what she told me was important business for the princess. And now you arrive from the north, asking for aid from the royal family. Why should I consent to you speaking to the King and Queen?"

Kaito is about to speak when they are both interrupted by a woman shokan in royal garb with long black hair. "Zenkaro, he must be the one Sheeva spoke of."

"We can't just--"

She smiles and places a hand on her husband's shoulder. "Fret not. I will speak to Mai; she will not be angry."

Kaito is curious. "What did Sheeva say about me, if I may ask? Nothing too harsh, I hope."

Xeena chuckles softly. "I too was at the capital with my sister when they knelt before the Kahnum. Sheeva pointed you out and said that you were strong but foolish. You defeated Shang Tsung with her assistance, which is commendable. The shokan have no love for sorcerers, especially one as dishonorable as he."

She turns and leads Kaito into the grand throne room of the shokan. It is very hot inside, due to molten magma surrounding a large arena, at the end of which sit two thrones.

King Gorbak and Queen Mai are seated upon them and regard you with curiosity. They are Goro and Duroc's parents and they look the same as when Kaito saw them sweat fealty to Kitana.

"My king and queen, I present Kaito of Earthrealm, ally to the Kahnum and slayer of Shang Tsung."

Kaito is happy that killing the sorcerer gave him some cred.

Gorbak looks at the human. "I am glad that Outworld is rid of that snake. What brings you here?"

Kaito kneels before the throne. "My lord, I would ask what news you have received from the capital."

"I am told that Sheeva travelled their last night with news from an ally," Mai says. "We have not received word since."

Kaito thinks he may be able to use this to his advantage. "I bring word from Kitana and ask for assistance in guarding the city against attack. The mighty shokan warriors would surely deter any threat."

Gorbak's face remains unchanged. "And does our Princess detect a threat to her rule?"

Kaito thinks quickly, remembering the feud between the shokan and the centaurs. "The centaurs are posing a threat to the city. They would think twice if they knew they were facing the shokan."

"And who will defend the cobalt mines while they are away?" Gorbak asks. "No. I will not send an army."

Kaito looks at Sub-Zero, who offers no words. Looking back at the king, he says, "Perhaps only a few warriors, then. Even a few of your mightiest could turn the tide of any battle. See it as an act of good will towards our Empress."

Gorbak sits back and places his chin in one of his four palms, thinking things over. "And yet, with the return of Shao Kahn, aiding your request would place the shokan out of his favor."

Kaito gulps. 'Shit.'

"Yes, human. We are aware of the siege, and of the role you played in toppling the Emperor. Shao Kahn will reclaim his throne; standing against him now would lead to the destruction of the shokan."

Sub-Zero turns around and sees six guards enter the throne room, led by Kintaro.

"Kaito..." he says in a low voice.

"You swore fealty to Kitana!" Kaito points out.

"The shokan swear loyalty to the throne, for only the strongest sit upon it. Shao Kahn will reclaim his throne; Kitana and her allies alone are not enough to stop him. They could not the first time. The shokan will not take part in either side of the battle and will serve whomever wins. This is how I will ensure the survival of my race and kingdom."

IF you merely stand aside in this conflict, then I seriously doubt your people will find themselves in a favorable position once its all over. Do you believe Shao Kahn will treat the Shokan well once he has reclaimed his throne when they did nothing to help him reclaim it, and besides he has little need for the Shokan as long as he has the Centaurs fighting for him.

HOWEVER, if you side with Kitana and help her to defeat Shao Kahn, then you can spare your people from his oppressive reign and earn the respect and gratitude of Outworld's far more generous ruler, Kitana.
>>

"You can't just stand back and do nothing! The centaurs have allied with Shao Kahn! They are going to be his favored race if you do nothing! The shokan already failed to stop his wedding from going awry--do you seriously think that if he wins, you will be fine?"

Gorbak stands. "Guard your tongue, earthrealmer, before I have it burnt out of your peasant mouth. You speak to royalty."

Kaito ignores his words. "If you help Kitana, you could forge an alliance that will remain strong for centuries! You will spare your people from Shao Kahn's wrath! He doesn't care about you!"

"That is where you are wrong, human. The shokan have always supported Shao Kahn. This is why I have already sent my elite warriors to the battle... to help Shao Kahn. Goro leads them, just as he has always been the general of the Emperor's armies."

Kitana has no legitimate claim to the throne while he lives. You, however, will not leave Kuatan for the insults you have levied upon me and my people. Take them to the dungeons."

Gorbak is stunned and everyone looks at him. "You cannot refuse," Kaito says. "If you do, you have no honor. That is the way of Outworld, isn't it? A challenge of Mortal Kombat is irrefutable."

"All Mortal Kombat is witnessed by the Elder Gods," King Gorbak growls. "You have invited greater scrutiny upon this than you can know."

Standing straight, he roars and throws out all four arms. "It has been two centuries since any fool last dared challenge me."

"All that means is that you're weak and out of practice," Kaito replies, cracking his knuckles and taking off his backpack.

"Are you prepared for a lesson in humility, human?" Gorbak says as one of the guards hands him an axe. "I will gladly put you in your place and afterwards deliver you personally to my Emperor."

"I learn new things every day," Kaito replies. "Today, I get to learn how tough an old four-armed king is, whose only muscle he's exercised in two centuries is his buttocks from sitting on his throne."

Gorbak roars and charges in, holding the axe in his upper arms while his lower hands burn with shokan fire.

Kaito claps his hands together and gives the king a thunderflash, blinding him. He teleports up to him and then delivers a fierce uppercut to his chin that, while it does not knock him down, does cause him to step back.

>>41740255

Kaito attempts to hit him in the nuts, the king swings the axe down in blind rage, nearly hitting Kaito's arm. He flips backwards as Gorbak charges and swings again, narrowly avoiding the attack.

Nearby, Sub-Zero watches from the sides, as do the remaining shokan.

Kaito leaps back from the King's powerful attacks. He points at the king and blasts him in the face with a thunderbolt. Gorbak roars in fury.

"Water," Kaito mutters to himself. "I need water!"

Sub-Zero overhears this and freezes part of the ground near the molten lava. It melts and Kaito reaches out, taking the water and collecting it into a sphere.

He hurls it at the shokan king and gets his armor wet. He then blasts him with lightning, causing him to drop his axe and step back.

Kaito rolls forward and grabs the axe and throws it into the lava.

Nearby, Kintaro roars and lunges at Sub-Zero for interfering. The tigrar and the Lin Kuei get into a fight along the outside of the throne room; now two matches go on as the shokan's cheer and war drums are beaten to accompany the match.

>>41740411

He then tries to sweep the king's legs out, but the king is strong and sturdy. Kaito's legs do not cause him to budge.

He reaches down and takes ahold of Kaito's leg and holds him upside down before slamming him against the ground, knocking the wind out of him immediately. He does this again before letting go.

He raises all four arms and charges them with fire as the half-dragon prepares to roast Kaito alive by unleashing all of his fire at once.

Kaito closes his eyes, grits his teeth and falls back to his most desperate, but arguably most effective tactic, and he brings his foot up and slams it home into the shokan king's nuts.

Were he here, Johnny would be proud of the fact that you just kicked the nuts that spawned Goro.

The king steps back in pain and his hand flames go out as his lower hands cup his wounded groin. He groans and leans forward; such was the force of this kick that the king might be taken out of the fight completely. It's questionable that he may ever have children again; possibly even needing assistance with further erections; that's how bad it was. Good roll, anon

Kaito gets up to his feet and prepares to attack again.

Suddenly Kaito is knocked over the head with a metal club. He turns around and sees Queen Mai standing there holding the club as his vision swims and he struggles to remain conscious. He reaches out towards her and loses balance, falling to the ground.

Kaito awakens an unknown period of time later and finds himself in a dungeon, hanging on a wall in a cell. This place reminds him of Goro's lair back on Shang Tsung's island.

'Shit...' he thinks to himself. He looks around the dank and old dungeon and ties to find Sub-Zero; no sight of him. 'Now what...' he wonders as he looks at the shackles holding him up; they are connected to chains which are connected to the wall.

His heavy spikes gauntlets have been removed and are nowhere to be seen either.

I can see a Within 10 cancelling other Within 10 rolls. But a Nat 100 and a Nat 1 are so damn rare on either end of the spectrum, if you're doing crit rules with them, having normal not Nat 1/100 rolls cancel them out is just shitty.
>>
>>41740870
>Gotta get the Kamidogou back
OH FUCK! This lost us the Kamidogu too!
BULL-FUCKING-SHIT!
>>
Alright, alright, I'm sorry guys. We've never really defined it up until now, so I will simply say this: a nat 100 is an automatic success. A nat 1 is an automatic failure. Both are of the highest degrees in either category and can only be canceled out by each other. This is an official rule of the game from this point on and I will honor it no matter what.

I don't mean to feel like this is railroaded but it was always going to be from the beginning that the shokan, either Mai or Kintaro, would interfere with the match; those low rolls just didn't afford Kaito a chance to dodge the attack.

The 100 took Gorbak out of the question in the fight, that's for sure.

Try as he may, Kaito cannot summon up energy. He focuses and concentrates as hard as he can but all that happens is that the shackles on his wrists glow an orange color and begin to burn hot.

He looks at them and sees some kind of runic symbols on them. 'Enchanted?' he thinks to himself. 'Some kind of supressing effect for my powers? Shit...'

He looks around and realizes that his pack is not in the cell.

Oh no.

The Kamidogu!

Kaito begins to panic and grits his teeth and pulls, but the chains are strong. There's no budging.

Suddenly, he hears someone approaching. He sees a cloaked figure appear before his cell, and a three-fingered hand emerges from within and touches the cell as whoever it is looks at him from under the hood.

"I am here to help you," a feminine voice says. "But we must move quickly and you must do all I say. They will soon realize the key is missing."

Another hand emerges, holding a key.

Kaito looks suspiciously at the hooded figure. "How do I know I can trust you?"

She uses the key on the cell. "I'm freeing you, aren't I?" she says as she steps in. She reaches up to his shackles.

"Hold it," he says. "I need to know if you can get these manacles off. Without them, I can use my powers."

She pauses. "No. I can't. I don't have the key for the manacles, I'm sorry. I have the key to get your cell open and you down, however."

She reaches up and undoes the lock at the base of the chain. Kaito's arm falls down with the weight of the manacles and the chain attached to it.

"You can't get these chains off the manacles either?" he asks as she undoes the other.

"No. We don't have time now, so you'll have to carry the chains. Try to keep them quiet! We can't have them rattling around if I am going to sneak you out of here."

"I can't leave this place without my pack," Kaito says. "It's very important."

She looks back, still hooded, her face obscured. "Your friend has it. He was able to escape the throne room with it and is somewhere in the cobalt mines."

"Sub-Zero wasn't captured?" he asks. He must've had a chance to escape, but not a chance to free him... He knows that the Lin Kuei would not simply abandon him. He must have a plan and is waiting to implement it.

Wait, is she part of his plan?

"Who are you?" Kaito asks.

"There's no time!" she says urgently. "Follow me!"

Kaito quickly picks up his chains and follows after her as they duck into the dungeons and move between shadows.

Two shokan guards can be seen nearby, chatting to each other. "Did you hear about the king?" one asks the other.

"I was on duty in them mines all day. What happened?"

"They say that a human attacked him and he was brought to his quarters and refused to leave."

She looks back at him and whispers, "We must sneak past them and get into the mines. My friend waits there for us."

Moving carefully, Kaito follows his mysterious rescuer past the guards when they are distracted. On their way out, Kaito suddenly stops, as the kicked up dust is going to make him sneeze.

She turns and looks at him and realizes that he cannot cover his nose without dropping the chains.

She cups his mouth and nose with a hand and places another to her lips. "Shhhhhh," she whispers.

He closes his eyes and focuses on not sneezing. When it passes, she urges him to follow her into the lower mines.

They pass into the tunnels and she leads him down a series of twisting passages and dark holes. In the distance, he can hears the sounds of mining and grunting.

She reaches a hidden door and opens it and leads him inside. The room is light by a glowing orange crystal.

Once in, she removes her hood. She is young; he initially thought it might have been Xeena but it isn't.

Kaito turns and sees who it is. "You're... I know you. You were with the royal family when they swore allegiance to Kitana... Wait, I remember now! You're Goro's daughter!"

"Jagara," she says with a smile. "It is nice to meet you in person, but I would have liked us to meet under better circumstances."

"So that makes you Gorbak's granddaughter," Kaito says. "I'm sorry I hurt him."

"Are you?" she asks with a raised eyebrow.

"Not really, if I'm being honest. He had it coming."

"Yes, he did. And much more," she says, taking hold of his wrist and holding one of her four hands up to the chain. She summons up some fire and prepares to burn through it.

"I can't burn these manacles but I can get these chains off," she says.

"So why are you doing all of this?" he asks.

"I am tried of my grandfather's rule and my father's pig-headedness," she replies. "I was excited, truly excited, when Kitana was declared Empress and we swore fealty to her. And now, the first thing that comes along to challenge her rule and my father and grandfather won't so much as lift a finger to help her, despite the brutal treatment the shokan have always endured under Shao Kahn's reign."

She melts off one of the chains and moves to the other. "I tire of this "the strongest must rule" mentality my father and his father have. All they do is find ways to break their own code of honor to declare themselves the strongest. Ever since my father was the champion of Mortal Kombat, he's changed..."

The other chain falls and Kaito's arms feel much lighter; now only a few links remain on both manacles.

"Thank you very much," Kaito says again, feeling his wrists. "I agree with everything you're saying. I beat your grandfather in a fight."

"You certainly did, but they weren't going to allow it. That's the real secret behind shokan 'honor': denial of the way things really are."

From the other end of the room, a figure enters. He is large and burly; a shokan.

Kaito gets ready to fight, but Jagara holds him back. "No. He is my only other ally."

The shokan approaches them both and he holds out a hand to shake while placing another over his heart.

Duroc drops his hands and moves close. "My son?! He lives?"

Suddenly he wraps all four arms around Kaito and gives him a crushing bear hug. "AHAHAHAH! MY SON LIVES!"

Kaito gasps and tries to breathe. Jagara manages to get Duroc to let go.

"I apologize, but you do not understand! I have not seen my son in decades! Ever since..." His voice trails off.

"Ever since your brother threw you off a cliff, right?"

"Yes," Duroc says. "I survived, but barely, and in a realm of the mines that none had ever emerged from before..."

He sits down and closes his eyes. "It took so long to escape from that realm... and the creatures that dwelt within. Every night, I would think of my love, and my son... my little stone... Rokuro. When I emerged, he was gone, and so was his mother... I thought them both dead and my despair was unimaginable."

"He returned and he and I fought until we were both exhausted, then he helped me liberate a city and its people from Shao Kahn's invaders. He is very prideful but his heart is in the right place."

Duroc is touched by this news. Jagara smiles and pats his shoulder. "Soon, you will be able to see him again, Uncle Duroc... But first we must change the shokan."

Duroc's smile vanishes. "Yes. You're right, little flower." He faces Kaito. "The Empress Kitana is the best chance my people have of escaping the tyranny of Shao Kahn. I will help you escape this place and I will ensure you reach her."

"I can't leave yet," Kaito says. "My friend, the blue warrior, Sub-Zero--he has something of great, incredible value, worth more than either of our lives. I cannot risk its loss."

"Then we must find him," Duroc says, understanding.

"He escaped into the mines," Jagara tells her uncle. "He is down here somewhere, but none know where."

"Will you help us look?" Kaito asks her.

"I must return to the palace before I arouse suspicion," she says. "But know that you are not alone in this fight, Kaito. The shokan must endure--and under my grandfather's leadership, we will fall. I know this."

"What about your brother?" Kaito asks. "I remember seeing you with him."

"Toron," she nods. "He follows my father blindly, desires to be just like him... and is his favorite child," she says somewhat distastefully.

Kaito can picture Goro being the 'I should've had two sons' kind of father.

Well I mean the first thing he did after we threw him off a mountain was help us defend some opressed villages.
We swapped life stories and if I'm remembering right he stopped us from getting mortally wounded in a fight.

That's not a bad record, admittedly it's because he wants to kill Goro for his father's disgrace and wants to make sure he has it done before our eventual battle to the death we said we'd have.
Still, he could've just let a random soldier kill us and be done with it easily enough.

Kaito closes his eyes and focuses. He tries to sense water--perhaps melted from Sub-Zero's ice.

Suddenly, the manacles around his hands begin to burn, but not too greatly. When he stops, they stop as well, cooling.

"Damn..." he says.

Kaito focuses hard and bears the pain. He suffers burns along his wrists but he follows a path through the mines, avoiding guards and searching from puddle to puddle.

They go low, into the deeper reaches of the mines. Duroc warns the Earthrealmer that this place could be dangerous, but there is more of a trail of water here.

Suddenly, a figure leaps out in a combat pose. They both prepare to do battle before they realize who it is.

"Kuai," he says with a sigh of relief. The armored ninja's cybernetic eyes glow bright blue in the darkness.

"Kaito. It is good that you are still alive." He looks at the shokan. "Goro?"

"His brother Duroc," Kaito introduces him. "Duroc, my Lin Kuei friend, Sub-Zero."

They shake hands; the shokan shakes a bit of ice off of his hand afterwards.

"The Kamidogu," Kaito breathes. "Where?"

Sub-Zero nods. "I have it. When I couldn't get to you, I made sure that they did not get their hands on it when they violated your match and took you captive."

He leads them around the bend.

Further in, they find a small cave. Sub-Zero reveals Kaito's backpack, and inside, the Edenia Kamidogu.

Kaito lets out a happy sigh and pumps his fist in the air. He remembers well Asgaarth's words to him before their talk was cut short. How fares the eagle-man, he wonders? And the rest of his allies back at the fortress?

"Do you have everything?" Duroc asks.

"Yes, we have it now," Kaito replies. "We can leave these lands and hurry back to the south."

Sub-Zero looks at Duroc. "Is there a way to get there faster?" he asks. "The palace must have some means of teleportation or some kind of mount."

Duroc thinks. "In the innermost chambers of the palace, it is said that there is a chamber of passage--transportation throughout Outworld. Only the Royal Family is allowed use of it."

"Well, we have Jagara, but I doubt she can get us through," Kaito says. "Not after the stunt we pulled in the throne room."

"We disable the guards and use it for ourselves, then," Sub-Zero suggests. "We can cut our travel time to mere moments."

"Otherwise, there are the war-mounts," Duroc says. "Great reptilian beasts the shokan have ridden into battle. I know where the stables are. It will be defended; the riders camp near their mounts. If we take them, we will be chased."

"Or we sneak out and go by foot," Kaito replies. "Probably the safest but longest way. Damn..."

Sub-Zero crosses his arms. "I advocate the portal."

Duroc shakes his head. "It will be guarded by however many of their elite warriors remain, possibly Kintaro, and the room has a permanent guardian, a shokan woman, Breeti, a mystic. I suggest we steal the mounts."

"You yourself said they will chase us," Sub-Zero counters. "We can use the room of passage and leave no trace of ourselves behind. And we've overcome great challenges in the past."

Kaito thinks hard.

Kaito turns to Duroc. "We have to risk going through the room of passage. It's vital that we get to the Emperor's fortress as soon as possible to stop him, and we can't have others following us. We need to, Duroc."

The shokan nods. "I understand. I suppose the time has come for me to cast off my self-exile and reveal myself to my family."

"They didn't know that you were alive and down here?" Kaito asks.

"No. None of them. I have carefully kept myself hidden, and taken great measures to ensure it."

"But why? Surely you could've made a difference."

The shokan closes his eyes. "My shame, Kaito. When I helped my brother, only for him to throw me into the depths, and after I spent so long trying to escape... only to learn that my family was gone and likely dead, and my brother the champion of Mortal Kombat. My father had not punished him, he had received the greatest of honors our people could levy upon him..."

The shokan sits against the nearby wall. "There was nothing I could do, nowhere I could go. All shokan would look down upon me and my own family would likely order my execution to maintain Goro's winning streak. I could not leave these mines, for I could be recognized elsewhere... and so I stayed here. To guide others, like my niece Jagara, my little flower. And to await a time when I could be valuable once more to my people."

He looks up. "That time is now. I know that. I will help you, Kaito. I know a way into the palace."

"You're a very noble man--er, shokan," Kaito says with a smile. "You're a bit hard on yourself but I understand. Help us, Duroc, and I promise you that I will do everything in my power to find a way to help the shokan."

Duroc smiles. "I am glad that it is time to leave this place. I wish to see my son again."

Sub-Zero speaks up. "This is all well and good, but every second we waste is a second lost. We need a plan."

"What kind of rites?" Kaito asks.

"Worry not, I know what must be done. It has been a very long time since I have had to perform them but I will not fail you."

"Then let's go," Sub-Zero says.

Duroc leads them through a series of tunnels and eventually brings them to a winding stone stairway that leads upwards. At its top is a secret door which they push aside to step out into the hallway of the shokan palace.

Alright, I've been called into work in about an hour; I need to get ready and get some food. After food, then work, and when I get back it will be late (around midnight Korea time, I imagine).

I'll keep you updated on the thread's new official twitter account. https://twitter.com/DamashiKonquest

The game will resume in about 8 to 12 hours; please help keep the thread alive. I encourage discussion about the quest; what has happened, what is happening, what will happen, what you'd like to see happen, etc.

If the thread dies or runs out of room I'll just make another one tomorrow morning for me.

See you guys then.

Maybe there is the jailer of some sort? Or the mysticist has the key, or at least know how to deactivate them. I would also bet on Kintaro.

Two out of these three are with the portal. So we should inquire about a jailer first.

If he didn't notice our escape yet, and we kill him, we could even delay further discovery

I don't remember ever seeing a good movie that was based on a videogame. Especiall not a live-action one. They are just too different, a worse combo than the book+movie.
>>
>>41747647
...................
>>
>>41747647
Pretty much this. I don't know how but video game movies almost always turn out bad. Yeah sure that MK web series was kick ads but Hollywood will find a way to ruin this.
>>
>>41747757
I think one of the reasons that the story of the games are either too shallow for a 2 hour movie, or too complex and it's meant to be discovered along with hours and hours of gameplay.

The other is that it's just impossible to find actors who look the same as the characters.
With comic-based movies, they can tailor the character to the actor, with book-based movies the description is lax enough to find actual people. With games.. good luck finding the person with the same face, acting skill, and preferably height and weight.

Just my emegrency bump
>>
>>41748751
Makes perfect sense, though I would add that Directors and such tend to change things around to suit them.
>>
>>41747647
The first Mortal Kombat was a good movie.

Mainly because the plot of MK1 is just Enter the Dragon and they mostly stuck to the source material.
>>
>>41748866
Oh yes, don't even get me started on directors and producers who never even touched the source material, and think they can decide what would appeal to the fanbase more.

>>41749226
Yes, they didn't try some weak spin off like in the Street Fighter movie.
>>
>>41749436
Supposedly GW has been offered a movie deal but turned it down because the Directors/Producers/Writers kept wanting to change to setting to suit their 'vision' of it.

Taking Sub-Zero's words of advice about not wasting time, Kaito advises Duroc to lead them directly to the chamber as stealthily as possible. The shokan nods and begins taking them down the ornate passages until they reach a set of large doors.

"No guards?" Kaito asks.

"The inside is always guarded by Breeti," Duroc says. "But it is strange that we encountered no patrols..."

"I smell a trap," Sub-Zero adds.

Kaito decides against making a comment about his ability to smell ever since the Cyber Initiative due to the importance of the moment and instead asks Duroc, "What do you think? Should we go inside?"

"If it is a trap, we have already sprung it by coming here; we cannot afford to waste time going elsewhere. If it is not, then we are merely paranoid."

Duroc approaches the large doors and opens them. There is a large circular chamber dimly lit by glowing blue crystals with balconies that open up to the outside; the purple night sky can be see beyond.

At the heart of the room, carved into the floor, is a circle of shokan runes, and at its heart is a female shokan with dark skin, white tattoos to match her stark-white hair. She carries a golden staff.

"Breeti," Duroc says and the mystic opens her eyes.

"The lost brother," she says in a soft voice. "I am surprised you are here. Not that you are alive, but that you would risk your life for these outsiders."

"We must get past her," Duroc says over his shoulder.

Kaito steps forward. "So, I understand that the shokan don't trust sorcerers, so you're probably not one, or the exception to the rule. Which is it?"

"I am a mystic trained in the old ways. I foresaw this day would arrive."

"So you saw me coming and waited, eh? I like that in a woman."

She says nothing. Kaito coughs. "If you foresaw this, then surely you've seen where the shokan are headed," Kaito says. "Under their current leadership, the shokan will be stomped out by Shao Kahn and the centaurs. Is that what you want?"

Her face remains stone-like and her voice has little emotion. "I am bound by honor to follow my king and my queen. They have not allowed you to leave."

Kaito sighs and holds up his wrists. "Can you at least get these off?"

"She can, but she will not," a voice calls out. The three of them turn around to look at the entrance, seeing Kintaro enter, dragging a kicking and shouting Jagara in by one of her hands. Several guards are behind them.

"Of course, I alerted the guards that you would be coming here," Breeti says.

"And you can't imagine my pleasure upon learning that you were behind all of this, Duroc," Kintaro laughs. "Looks like I get to have what's left after Goro's failures."

"Seems like that's your entire gig, isn't it Kintaro?" Kaito says with a smile. "Always second-best, always standing in the shadow of the great shokan champion?"

Kintaro's feline face turns into a scowl. "None of you are leaving her alive."

He suddenly hisses in pain as Jagara stabs him in the arm with a punching dagger, forcing him to let go. She leaps away to stand amidst the three of you, taking out three more punching daggers.

"I may not like my father, but that doesn't mean that I am not his daughter," she says to him. "I carry his strength!"

Kintaro roars and prepares to send the guards in. Breeti readies herself for kombat.

"I'll handle the guards," Sub-Zero says.

"I will take care of Kintaro," Duroc says, facing the tigrar. Jagara stands alongside him.

Kaito turns to Breeti. "Breeti, please. I don't want to fight you. I'd like your help."

She shakes her head. "I cannot. I must serve my king."

"I fought your king in Mortal Kombat and the royal family took me captive when I won. How can you say that you are bound by honor to serve those without honor?"

The mystic is stunned for a moment, unable to find the words to justify her actions. She turns her head aside and shakes it. "I... I cannot."

Around them, the battle erupts. Sub-Zero freezes two of the guards and then creates a sword of ice to parry the axe-strikes of the others while Duroc and Kintaro clash in the heart of the room; Jagara dashes to the side and waits for her moment to jump in.

Breeti holds up her staff and points it at Kaito; the head of which now burns with a fire. "I must stop you. It is my duty. The shokan people will never forgive me if I let you pass. I must honor my king... even if his actions are dishonorable."

What of Duroc? After he let his guard down to spare Goro, he turned on him. After he survived, he returned to his brother not just being unpunished, but receiveing the greatest honor and be a champion of mortal kombat."

She stares at Kaito as he continues, "Don't serve your king. Serve the shokan people. Honor the oaths made to Princess Kitana. Please, Breeti. Don't let your people die."

"And if I do this, and Shao Kahn wins, what becomes of the shokan? They will be in ruin regardless," she says.

"Would you rather accept your fate or fight against it? Would you rather the shokan die kneeling before their murderer or on their feet charging against him? At least with the latter they have a chance to win. And I swear I will help your people, and unlike your king, I honor my promises."

Breeti closes her eyes. "I will do this."

Kaito smiles. "You're making the right choice."

She stands in the center of the runes and places her staff at its exact central point, into a small groove. "I can send you directly to a specific person or location; you must choose the destination. Anyone you hold or holding you will go with you."

Kaito turns around and sees Sub-Zero still fighting the guards. Duroc and Jagara are still battling Kintaro, who opens his mouth and unleashes a torrent of flame that Duroc blocks with his four arms.

"Be ready," he says to her as he goes to help Sub-Zero face the shokan guards. As the Lin Kuei freezes two more, Kaito leaps and kicks one to the ground. When this is done, he turns and punches another in the face.

Nearby, Duroc grapples with Kintaro, all four of their arms locked against each other.

"You... will... FALL!" Kintaro shouts. "You were weaker than Goro, and you are weaker than I!"

Jagara suddenly leaps in and stabs Kintaro in the back of the thigh, forcing him down onto a knee. Duroc smashes his forehead against the tigrar's and then grabs him and lifts him up. "That's where you're wrong..." he says, grunting. "I was STRONGER than Goro! I defeated him! It was my heart that made me save him from the cliff!"

He approaches a nearby balcony as the tigrar struggles to get free.

"A mistake I will not make with you," Duroc says before throwing him off. Kintaro's roar can be heard as he is thrown from the mountainside city.

Kaito and Sub-Zero finish the rest of the guards, subduing them with ice or knocking them out.

Jagara and Duroc meet with them in the heart of the room. "This is it," Jagara says with a smile. "Breeti, I am glad that you are with us."

"We do not have long," the mystic says. "More will be coming."

Kaito thinks hard about where he wants to go.

Turana! or Tortek. Either Or.

Also mention to Duroc that throwing him off the Balcony probably didn't kill Kintaro. Shokan seem to have a genetic immunity to dying from being thrown off tall things.

Kaito looks at Breeti. "I know we're on the clock here, but uh," he holds up his wrists, "a little help?"

She nods and touches her hands to the manacles. With a shokan word of power, they open and fall to the ground. Kaito sighs in relief and rubs his burnt wrists.

"Kitana," he says then. "We're going straight to Princess Kitana."

"Very well," Breeti says. Sub-Zero places a cold hand on Kaito's shoulder, causing him to shiver slightly. Jagara does the same.

Duroc does not.

"Duroc?" Kaito looks at him questioningly.

"No," he shakes his head. "I'm sorry, Kaito, little flower. I must go to my son."

Kaito is about to speak, but Duroc holds up a hand. "Please understand. I must go to him. I must. I will go to him and I will bring him into our battle. I promise you this."

Everyone is silent, but after a moment, Kaito nods. "Alright. I know you'll do the right thing, Duroc."

"You have given me a chance to see my son. For this, I will forever be your ally." The shokan smiles and looks at Jagara. "Be careful, little flower. Stay strong."

She smiles and holds his hand. "For the shokan."

"For the shokan."

Duroc steps back and lets go of her hand as Breeti prepares to teleport you.

She performs the rites, the ancient words of magic, and when they are complete, the three of them are taken away in a bright flash of light.

When the flash is gone, all three of them find themselves in the middle of a forest that Kaito recognizes; after all, it would be impossible to forget a place in which the trees look at you with hollow eyes and open mouths.

The Living Forest.

Suddenly a figure leaps out at them from behind a tree, kicking Kaito suddenly in the chest and knocking him back into the soft earth. Sub-Zero is about to attack the man when suddenly a voice calls out, "WAIT!"

Kitana emerges from behind a tree. Kaito looks up and sees her, and then sees who kicked him. Rain.

The edenian prince stands straight and does not offer a hand for Kaito to get back up, nor does he apologize. He moves to stand next to Kitana.

"And then there's this asshole..." Kaito mutters as his friends help him up.

"Kaito!" Kitana says, running up to him. "How are you here?"

"We got a lift from the shokan," he tells her. She looks at Jagara and Sub-Zero.

"I am happy that you brought some allies, for we are greatly short on them," she says. From behind Rain, Tanya emerges from the shadows.

Kaito looks around at the forest. "Why are you here? Why are you not at the fortress?"

Kitana's eyes close and her head bows slightly in shame.

It dawns on the earthrealmer. "We lost, didn't we?"

"I failed," Kitana says somberly. "I failed the people of this land."

"Don't say that," he tells her. "You're still alive. But what happened? Where is Turana? Asgaarth? Tortek?"

She does not open her eyes. "There was a traitor among my court. The attack came from within and then the armies of the dead and the centaurs overwhelmed the city and took it by force. I escaped with my fellow edenians, but..."

She looks up at him. "The rest were captured. Turana, Asgaarth, Sheeva, all captured while they bought time for my escape... I failed them as well."

"That's not true. You made it out, and that means there's still hope. What about Tortek? Did the tarkatans make a difference in the battle?"
>>
>>41759426

"They certainly did," Rain sneers. "On the wrong side of it."

"The hell is that supposed to mean?" Kaito asks.

Kitana nods. "I'm sorry, Kaito, but Tortek was led astray."

"What? What do you mean?"

"An imposter pretending to be me intercepted him and convinced him to join the Emperor's forces."

"That can't be," Kaito shakes his head. "That can't be! I know Tortek, I know he wouldn't just join the Emperor!"

"He was told to help Kitana," she says. "He believes he is."

Kaito punches a tree, causing it to roar in anger. He ignores the tree and says, "Damnit! It must be the same woman that tricked me in the hot spring! The one who impersonated Jade!"

"Possibly," Kitana says. "Or it is Mileena, pretending to be me." She lowers her veil. "With our veils, we are identical."

"Who was the traitor?" Sub-Zero asks.

"When the Emperor returned, Ermac betrayed us and went immediately to his master," Rain says. "Shao Kahn created him. Shao Kahn commands him."

At that moment, Sareena enters the clearing, accompanied by none other than Kotal.

"Kaito! Kuai!" she says, running towards them both. "Thank the Elder Gods you are both alive."

She gives them both a hug.

"At least you made it out," Kaito says to her.

"But there is more, and all of it is unfortunate," Kitana continues. "Shao Kahn has allied with Quan Chi. With Shang Tsung dead, he was in need of a sorcerer. He has provided Shao Kahn with a powerful artifact: the Deathstone. With it, he commands legions of the undead, and they are led by Scorpion."

Kaito's eyes narrow. "Scorpion? Why is he their leader?"

"He is dead. He can use the Deathstone safely, without it draining his life. And with it, they have resurrected countless warriors... an army big enough to invade Earthrealm, his next goal."

"What?! But we defeated him in Mortal Kombat! We stopped his wedding! He can't just invade Earthrealm--there are RULES to this shit, people!"
>>
>>41759426
>Rain still hanging out with the good guys

Motherfucker sure is playing the long game...
>>
>>41759460

"Shao Kahn no longer cares. After five hundred years of trying to conquer Earthrealm through Mortal Kombat, and after Shang Tsung's failed Outworld tournament, he simply desires to invade and conquer Earthrealm out of sheer, malice-filled spite and revenge. He will destroy everything in his path to reach his goal."

"But how can he do this?" Sub-Zero asks. "He can't just open up portals for his armies; that kind of magic would drain even him."

"He has a plot," Kitana says. "I know not yet what it is. But he will move soon."

When she goes silent, Kaito decides to take off his backpack. He opens it up and removes the heavy magical gem. "Princess, I believe this belongs to you."

Kitana's eyes go wide. "This... this is..."

The human smiles. "Yes."

Rain and Tanya run up to her. "The Kamidogu!" Rain says. "We can use this to restore Edenia!"

Tanya smiles and clutches Kitana's shoulder. "At last! We can be free from Outworld!"

The smile on Kitana's face runs away. "But without Asgaarth..."

"We need to rescue our friends," Kaito says. "Sneak back into the city somehow."

"It will be difficult," Sareena says. "Quan Chi has Bi-Ha---Noob Saibot and other wraiths and undead patrolling the city. The Brotherhood of the Shadow is now firmly entrenched in Shao Kahn's court."

"And now Shao Kahn has the tarkatans, shokan and centaurs under him again, along with an army of the dead," Kotal points out. "It seems that in our attempts to lesson his power, we made him stronger than ever."

"There's got to be a way in..." Kaito says. He looks at Sareena. "Whatever happened to our boat?"

"It should still be at the docks," she says.

"We need to warn Earthrealm of the impending invasion," Sub-Zero says.

"Unless we can stop it before it starts," Kaito counters.

"Impossible," Rain dismisses the notion. "We need to consolidate what forces we have left, not engage in a suicide mission to rescue a few friends."

"Those friends are worth more to me than your sorry ass," Kaito replies, getting close to the purple ninja. Rain does not back down.

"Enough," Kitana separates them. "We will not fight amongst ourselves. We will attempt both at the same time."

"We cannot let the Kamidogu fall into the hands of Shao Kahn," Tanya reminds her.

"I know. We must keep it safe until we can use it." Kitana thinks for a moment. "I know a place where this can be kept. Kaito, I want you to be the one to lead the rescue mission. Sareena, Rain, Sub-Zero, I want you to go with them. Kotal, Tanya, Jagara, you three will accompany me. We leave tonight."

Suddenly, Sub-Zero turns and creates a fog of raining ice that showers the nearby trees with a layer of frost. An invisible creature amongst the branches is coated with the frost, not enough to freeze him but enough to reveal his presence.

Reptile hisses as he drops his invisibility and leaps from the tree, heading deeper into the Living Forest.

"He saw and heard everything," Kitana says. "He will report back to his masters!"

"I got him!" Kaito replies. "Get the Kamidogu to a safe place!"

He takes off into the forest; Sub-Zero and Rain run after him.

If they don't capture him, Shao Kahn will know they are coming.

And that's our story for this weekend, everyone. I leave you with this, and the next thread will start up with us chasing down Reptile.

For those curious, yes, if we had gone to Turana instead, we'd have ended up right in the heart of Shao Kahn's fortress surrounded by enemies.

If we had gone to Bo', we'd have ended up in his hut in Outworld. If we had gone to Tortek, we'd have ended up alongside him and Not!Kitana.

It was a choice that would radically change the course of events to come, but you guys made a good choice. Anyone with Kitana would have done; Sareena was the second likeliest choice that I had planned for in their group, and Asgaarth was the third (but of course, he is captured).

Well, if you guys want, I'd be up to making another thread. It's Sunday afternoon over here where I am, but I know it's Saturday night where most of you must be.

>Smoke

The shokan chamber of passage only works for Outworld, so he'd be out. He's still in Arctika leading the Lin Kuei in Sub-Zero's absence.

>Khameleon

While technically Kaito doesn't know her name yet, the name isn't necessary; yes, we could have gone straight to her. I can't say where (or who) she could possibly be right now, but we'd have found out if we had gone.
>>
>>41759737
I thought about following Khameleon, but that would have been more dangerous than Mileena or Asgaarth.
Would have risked it, if not for all the people with us, and the Kamisomething at risk

I like to think Khameleon has Mileena wrapped around her finger that disguising herself as Kato an seducing Mileena. So if we had gone to her Mileenas recreation, from her crazy point of view, would be like "Awesome! I get two boyfriends!"
>>
>>41759880
Also Kaito has no idea if her plot differs from Shao Kahn's.
>>
>>41759909
That would be simultaneously hilarious and weird to bump into from Kaito's perspective.

>Exactly how bad off are our friends at the moment on a scale of "chained up indefinitely" to "already rendered down for the fleshpits"?

It's not good.

Based on our choices, unless the absolute best course of action is taken with the best rolls, someone is going to die.

>Also how's Mileena taking the return of Shao Kahn? Did our talks stick with her at all?

We have planted seeds of doubt within her mind, but Shao Kahn makes the land infertile.

She is not beyond redemption.

I hope it's Shao Kahn.
Also, Damashi are we going by the games where not even death is permanent?
Because even if one of our friends dies, we should be able to get them back.
>>
>>41760391
We could turn it into a 3-way with us, Mileena and a revolving cast provided by Khameleon though
>>
>>41760443
Well for the record, so far all the deaths seemed pretty permanent so far.
Also, we better make sure it's Shao Kahn.
>>
>>41760367
>Shao Kahn makes the land infertile
Nothing some storms can't fix. Get on your "I'm not Liu Kang!" hats guys. It's time for us to save all the things, or as many as possible. Even if it means our lives.
>>
>>41760443

If a soul is pure, when it dies it passes into a better existence; heaven for lack of a better term. They can be brought back, like Johnny was in MK4 (who apparently came back to life just because he fucking wanted to, goddamn Johnny). If it is tainted, it passes into the Netherrealm, where they can be toyed with by whomever it ends up with (usually Quan Chi/Shinnok). The good guys in the new timeline were made into Revenants because of the bullshit deal Quan Chi made with Shao Kahn.
>>
>>41760520
>Shao Kahn makes the land infertile
We should just refertilize with his blood.

>>41760367

>>
>>41760443
>>41760508

People only come back if Quan and Shinnok think they'll be useful.

In the old timeline, Sheeva stayed dead for like 15 years, and Motaro is fucked in both.
>>
>>41760580
>(who apparently came back to life just because he fucking wanted to, goddamn Johnny).
Wasn't the entire background for that something like "Woah, my friends are fighting and heaven is fucking boring. Raiden, get your lightning ass over here and bring me back."
>>
>>41760620
Actually no, it was because Heaven itself was attacked by Shinnok and Johnny made himself useful in the defense.
>>
>>41760620
>>41760580
So we have a pretty good chance then. We just have to smack Raiden with the fact that we've earned a freebie.

>I need to watch that show, hell I need to read the comics too. Both came out in the nineties right?

Listen carefully to me: They are garbage. And it's that kind of garbage where it's mostly just boring and not very creative and only occasionally interesting, not the "so bad it's good" kind of way. It's only so bad it's good every now and then, kind of like how everyone (AND I MEAN FUCKING EVERYONE) in the comics refers to themselves in the Third Person literally ALL the goddamned time, like they keep thinking everyone else forgets who they are. Also, 90's artwork to the extreme (pic related). I have taken some good ideas from them to incorporate into the quest but most of them aren't great.

The cartoon isn't great. It's low-tier for a Saturday Morning Cartoon. I've cherry-picked the best qualities it has and have incorporated them (Asgaarth, for example). It's only got maybe two or three decent episodes out of its 13-episode run.

The episode with Smoke is the best. It's literally amazing, like if they took the entire budget for good of the whole series and stuffed it into that one episode.
I suggest people watch at least that episode.

Yes, I recommend that one and the series finale, the episode that features Asgaarth.

I mean, he's voiced by John Rhys Davis. You can't get classier outside of Sean Connery.

I'm half expecting Turana to try and barter her ability to use Shang Tsung's magic to try and stay alive until we can rescue her.
>>
>>41760657
>What does Mileena think of our Character?

Mileena was born into a world of black and white extremes. She was created under the premise of replacing someone else, to effectively BE her, just on Shao Kahn's side. To her, this initially meant that things could only ever be this way; that she cannot exist in a world that has both her and Kitana.

Kaito is the only person (so far) in this story who has told her that things can be different; he is the only one of the "good guys" who has given her a chance and showed genuine concern for her.

That makes a big difference and it's going to pay off if we don't screw it up.
>>
>>41760827
Khan has got that classic Evil Overlord tendency to take named characters prisoner.

For example, a single-issue comic that was *supposed* to be canon, just like there was one for MK1 and 2, had it like Johnny was never even dead, he just shows up hanging out with Sonya and says he was doing research for a movie where he's gonna play a soldier in the army who falls in love with his teammate.

Another example is that two different versions of Kai's backstory exist, one where he's a young apprentice who just started training under Liu, another where he's been a White Lotus member since before the tournaments.

MK4 is the weakest game in the series lore-wise.

It IS canon that Shinnok's army, led by Reiko, attacks Heaven in the game's prologue.

There are perhaps two or three comics from the Malibu line (two is the minimum I will defend) that I will call good and they were all single-character special issues.

Let's have an impromptu storytime, shall we?

This comic is, to me, the absolute best that they ever produced (which isn't a high margin but it's good nonetheless).
>>
>>41760911
Generally, anything in the game I take as priority canon, at least Bio wise. Endings are a crap shoot unless they're confirmed/semi-confirmed by the next game.
>>
>>41760902
Well I'm down for not messing it up, she'd be interesting as a non-antagonist.

I thought the Kitana/Mileena one-shot was the best, personally. In comparison it blows the MK9 version of Mileena's origin out of the water

Kung Lao was my favourite character in MK. I saw him in the Shaolin Monks game and immediatley liked him. I think I started to like cool hats because of him.
Then I learned english, and replaying the game, I had to see that he was bit of a bitter jackass.
Granted that's the only MK game I ever played, so I might be wrong about my second impression of him, but it was really disappointing.

Sure but like I said, Reiko and Fujin's bios both confirm the war reached Heaven even before Earthrealm got involved. Thatwas their justification for why Fujin's in the game but the other Mythologies gods weren't, they died in that fight and Raiden and Fujin were the only survivors from Earthrealm's pantheon.

(Though Deception later established that gods reincarnate when they die)

He wasn't a bitter jackass until Shaolin Monks, ironically enough. I never liked it much, and was saddened a bit that it was continued in MK9. MKX's human Kung Lao pre-battle dialogues are the best because he is much wiser and more laidback. This comic is my all-time favorite because of its characterization of him; perhaps it will redeem him a bit in your eyes.

The only problem in this comic is that everyone STILL refers to themselves in the third person but I'll take it

I'm pretty sure by the MK2 arc of the comic, both Bi-Han and Baraka are members of the Earthrealm defense team.

Kuai Liang doesn't show up until the very end of MK2 Tournament Edition.

Specifically the thing I like about it is that mostly sticks to the pre-reboot version of the story, wherein Mileena was created WAY before MK2 and was deemed a failure as a clone because of how her mouth turned out, so instead of replacing Kitana, her and Kitana were raised to think they were twin sisters.

The reason this is better is because Kitana being openly regarded as Kahn's favorite of the two and Mileena not being allowed to fulfill the purpose she was created for made her a tragic, sympathetic character. Y'know, she gets to be sad, jealous, self-loathing, etc. instead of just a shallow, one-dimensional MK version of Tira from Soul Calibur.

I liked it a lot too, but in the end I went with the newer interpretation of Mileena's origin; despite how batshit nuts they made her, I liked the idea of her being childish because she hadn't lived long and MKX continued the theme of her being a bit of a spoiled brat put into a leadership position.

We can change all of that, though maybe
