Let's see... news.

Well, school starts in two weeks- a little less, actually. Next Tuesday will probably be our last regular run for a while, till we get things sorted out. I'm leaning towards moving to Thursday evening runs for the simple fact that I don't have to be up Friday morning and can run a bit later to make up for a late start time. Hopefully that sounds good to you guys, let me know. I really don't want to have to move the run and have everyone caught out by it!

Anya is in love.

You've seen it before, done the exact same thing the first time you laid eyes on the F-14. You might be one of the Navy's handful of Wyvern drivers, but your first love is, was, and will forever will be the tomcat.

Anya's, meanwhile, is the P-38, the venerable fork-tailed devil. This particular example of the type, the colonel was only to happy to share, had been discovered in the Sahara a few years back by one of his guys, working from records of squadrons flying out of bases in Tunisia during the war. They'd discovered several missing- and, more importantly- unaccounted for aircraft.

One of them had been this P-38L. According to records, she'd been sent out with several hundred aircraft and six witches in motherships on an attack on martian targets in southern Europe, and never come home. However, she'd been sighted in heavy clouds as little as ten minutes prior- so they'd known she didn't go down in the med. Working from that, the colonel's people put together a search area and started looking, eventually finding her after six weeks. She'd belly-landed, her pilot apparently dying on impact of a broken neck. The colonel had said it was a bittersweet moment for him, being able to help put a missing airman to rest.

>>
Anya had sat, captivated, listening to the story, about how the colonel's guys used a ski-equipped C-130 on loan from the USAF to fly out and recover wreck, it's wings removed, and move it first to Europe, then home. Initially, the air force had wanted it for it's museum in Ohio, but there wasn't space- or funding- for it, and they already had an example of an echo model there, as well as several other preserved examples in other museums, and so released it to the colonel, who'd brought it home.

"She's almost airworthy." He'd said, looking up at the plane. "She's in sound shape structurally, and her port motor's in wonderful shape, hardly even needed to change the plugs. Her other one, though.." He trailed off with a shrug. "That one's giving us trouble."

For her part, Anya had taken all that in- and then immediately asked for the tech orders for the airplane and it's Allison V-1710-111 engines. She'd disappeared shortly thereafter, going upstairs in the house to 'her' bedroom and curling up in a chair with one manual open in front of her.

2/3 (I think)
>>
Meanwhile, Stasya and Lilya have stayed with you, and the Colonel's been busily showing off his collection to them. The F4U you flew- and nearly crashed- last time your were here interests Stasya, while Lilya seems drawn, almost magnetically, to an aircraft that had, at one time, seemed destined to be one of it's biggest rivals- the A6M Zero. Technically, the Colonel's example of the rare aircraft is an A6M3, pulled from the scrapyard literal hours before it was going to be shredded. The Japanese, especially their military, he explained to your daughter, weren't as big on maintaining old relics. Before it had come to rest in that boneyard, it had sat at a disused airfield for years in the elements. It had been a challenge to get stable enough to move, let alone fly- it's wings were almost entirely scratch built, among other things. They'd shipped it over via a contract hauler and had it landed in Los Angeles, with a short haul transport- a C-123 owned by the colonel- flying it the rest of the way to the ranch.

The girls, of course, don't really appreciate what that means- how rich the colonel actually is. They're far more interested in the old warbirds. You're honestly glad, you'd been kind of worried that they wouldn't really care about aviation the way you do. You couldn't blame them, of course, given what they'd been through, but you'd hoped they'd be interested anyway. You've found that warplanes like this have a certain mystique around them, something that speaks to every pilot, especially every fighter pilot, ever to fly.

3/4 (oops)
>>
They'd been reluctant to leave when the colonel had called you all for dinner. He'd been hosting a fairly large gathering, "family and friends", of his chapter of the CAF. All in all, there's about sixty or so people, none of whom you recognize.

"Now, ah understand if you don't feel comfortable eatin with everyone, young sir." The colonel says while you call the girls down from their spots in the old fighters. "You're more than welcome to eat supper in the house, I can have Caroline set you a place in there. But Ah'm sure that everyone would be honored to meet the great Frank Bishop."

You hesitate. It might be good for the girls to learn about socializing a bit. There's probably some kids here around their age, and you're not sure they've ever really met anyone they could make friends with, except for Goose and maybe Merlin, to some extent. On the other hand, this may not be the right setting for it- the colonel has made it clear that, among aviation enthusiasts, your name is practically a household one, and a lot of the people here would be absolutely delighted to meet you in person. The problem there being that it might be a bit overwhelming for the girls. Maybe less so Anya, but she hasn't come out of her room since getting the tech orders- Caroline's apparently been keeping an eye on her.

[] Maybe we'd better eat in the house, sir. I don't think the girls are ready for quite that much excitement yet.

[x] We'll eat with everyone else. Don't want to give anyone the wrong impression about us.

You look at the girls, who join you on the floor of the hangar and wave to Slider, who's been playing around with a pair of F6F strikers- one of very few sets the colonel actually owns. Most of them were claimed post-war by their operators, as was, apparently, their right. You wonder if they're still allowed to do that- you think mom had a pair of Phantoms on a dusty rack under a tarp in the garage, but you're not sure, and it's not like she ever took them out at any point.

"We'll eat with everyone else, colonel." You say, noting Slider's nod as you do so. "We don't want to give anyone the wrong impression."

"A sound idea, young sir. I'll have some more chairs set out for you." He says.

He sets off, leaving the four of you alone in the hangar. You're about to follow him when Stasya tugs on your shirt sleeve. She doesn't say anything when you look down at her, instead just looking back at you expectantly- her turn to ride on your shoulders, you guess. You laugh and puck her up, letting her adjust herself while Lilya takes your hand.

"So what all does he usually cook here?" Slider asks, taking your free hand and entwining her fingers with yours.

You shrug as best you can. "I can't remember the last time I got to come to one of these." You say. "He used to have them once a year, but when his wife passed, he kinda slowed down. That was back when I was about, oh, Stasya or Lilya's age."

1/2
>>
"That doesn't answer my question." Slider points out.

You laugh again. "Point. Usually it's a pretty typical Barbeque, but sometimes he'll do a fish fry or something. He's from Virginia originally, I think, moved out here as a kid with the rest of his family just before the war. His dad was an instructor at march field."

"So how'd he make all his money?" She asks. "Pilots don't get paid that much."

"Don't I know it." You mutter, earning you a sideways look- witches make better pay than their conventional counterparts, which has been a sticking point in their acceptance forever. "Don't actually know, but I know they've had it forever, his folks were pretty rich too, according to mom and dad. You'd have to ask him though, I think they had a lot of sources."

She seems to accept that well enough as you walk out to the covered dining area, created by stringing a couple canvas covers from the ground over the top of the SBD and over to supports set in concrete pads. More than a few sets of eyes look up at you as you emerge- and you hear a bit of clapping. Someone, a rougher-looking guy in biker leathers, stands up, the American flag patch quite visible on his right side, and before very long, everyone is on their feet.

"Papa? why are those people doing that?" Stasya asks.

> How do you want to explain this one?

You struggle with a lot of explanations you could give her, but finally settle on the simplest- and truest- of them.

"Because they appreciate what we're doing for them as members of the armed forces." You say. "And a lot of people consider me a hero."

Stasya doesn't answer, instead, you think, just looking at everyone all of them on their feet. You can't do much more than wave, Rachel graciously letting you have your hand back to do so. You shake a few hands after Stasya gets off her perch, and Slider takes the seat to their side, leaving a spot empty for you. Across the table, perhaps by design, is the same guy in biker leathers that originally stood up. You assume the older-looking heavyset woman next to him is his old lady. You nod to them without sitting down.

You don't sit just yet, instead walking behind Rachel and putting your hands on her shoulders. She brings one hand across her chest to put on top of your right hand as you lean forward. "I'll go get Anya." you say. "Keep an eye on the girls?"

"I can go get her, if you want." she says. "Maybe let you sit and chat a bit? People are gonna wanna talk to you more than me."
